FROM THE CEO...

FRO M THE ED ITO R...

Merħba and welcome onboard this Air Malta flight.

Welcome to October

This month we start operating our Winter 2019/20 flight schedule which will see us increase frequencies on our most popular routes including London Gatwick. For the first time, this winter we are also extending services to/from Prague and Lyon.

It’s official! Autumn in Malta is now my favourite season, I admit, I’ve been a spring advocate for a good portion of my life, however as I’ve aged and assembled a bit of wisdom under my belt, I’m unearthing a bit of seasonal snobbery in my nature. Autumn is truly a season of brilliant beauty in Malta. Not only is the climate more manageable, but this time of year provides the opportunity to put the wisdom gained in previous months to good use.

Our fleet replacement process is continuing and last month the third brand new Airbus A320neo joined our fleet. The new aircraft are configured according to our specifications and requirements with the cabin interior selected to offer 18-inch-wide seats where you can enjoy more personal space, comfort and leg room. Apart from enhanced facilities including a more modern look and feel of the cabin, led lighting, USB chargers, and larger luggage storage, the aircraft offers enhanced environmental performance with its improved fuel efficiency of around 20%.

While schedules pick up the pace, the mild, temperate weather brings balance and clarity to the chaos and offers a reasonable assurance. The earlier sunsets signal the need to get some much-needed rest. But autumn is by no means a season of laziness; I like to think of it more as a season of comfort.

The local cultural and events calendar during the month of October is as interesting as ever. The third edition of Radio Italia Live – Il Concerto will be held on the 4th, featuring a star-studied line-up of leading Italian pop stars who will perform accompanied by the Mediterranean Orchestra under the direction of Maestro Bruno Santori. The Notte Bianca, on the 5th, is a spectacular cultural festival during which Valletta is transformed into a magical creative space and a unique arts celebration.

Here at Il-Bizzilla, as autumn heralds the transition into winter, we embrace it and make the most of all its offerings while it’s upon us - offerings which we gladly look forward to sharing with you. We have combined a bounty of inspiration, belly-filling comfort food and stacks of culture, plus much more into this vibrant October issue. Join us as we explore Malta’s most celebrated fish throughout the lampuki season, as Hannah Brincat explains how best to enjoy the humble plate. We then head to the south of Malta to the quaint fishing village of Marsaxlokk, and Claudia Caruana takes you off the beaten track to nearby St Peter’s Pool.

October is the ideal time for bird watching in Malta and Birdlife Malta has teamed up with Eurobirdwatch19 and is organising bird watching events at the Għadira Nature reserve and Buskett. If you are visiting our sister Island of Gozo, try and not miss the Fjakkolata, a spectacular event where the rural setting of Santa Lucia Village is magically lit up by thousands of fjakkoli under the beautiful Autumn skies. If you are adventurous, Għarb Village will be hosting the Gozo International Kite and Wind Festival that promises high-flying fun for children and adults.

Elsewhere in the issue, we meet highly revered Malta-based designer, Sef Farruġia, who describes her creative journey at her beguiling boutique in Rabat. Sarah Chircop interviews one of Malta’s last remaining hand-made tile makers, truly a fascinating labour of love. As always, our events section is packed with a cacophony of musical, charitable, cultural and social events. Why not catch a musical show such as “We Will Rock You” or Elton John’s “Your Song”?

WHY I CHOSE GOZO W O R K , L I V E , P L AY

WHY I CHOSE GOZO IS A SERIES OF PERSONAL RECOUNTS FROM PEOPLE WHO CHOSE GOZO TO GIVE GREATER SENSE TO THEIR LIFE. SMALL, YET FULL OF OPPORTUNITY, THERE ARE OFTEN RECURRING WORDS ABOUT GOZO FROM THOSE WHO ARE STRUCK BY AN ISLAND THAT CATCHES THEM BY SURPRISE - RUGGED, BEAUTIFUL AND SIMPLE. CAN LIFE GET BETTER THAN GOZO?

My name is Peter Buttigieg and I was born and raised on the island

There was a period of absence from Gozo, when I decided to start

of Gozo. There is an affinity with Gozo that is deeply rooted in our

a new life in New York. I spent ten years there, however, no matter

GOZO

WORDS VISITGOZO / MINISTRY FOR GOZO

IT’S OPERA TIME IN GOZO! It’s that time of year again when Gozo’s two opera houses buzz with activity in preparation for the island’s annual opera season. Every year, two opera productions are staged in Victoria. These opera nights have not only established themselves as key cultural events in Gozo but have also gained international critical acclaim. The beauty of Gozo’s opera productions is that they are both highly dependent on volunteers who work hard in a bid to outshine the competing theatre’s production. Competition between Gozo’s two Opera Houses is rife and this ensures that both productions are of a very high quality. In fact, In April 2014, Opera Now commented about Opera in Gozo: “If only English National opera and Covent Garden had that sense of cutthroat competition, how much edgier London’s operatic life would be.” This year Aurora Theatre will be presenting Giacomo Puccini’s 4-act

Lampuki are always looking for shelter from the sun, and this knowledge is at the heart of how Maltese fishermen catch the fish SEASONAL BUT VITAL Traditional ties aside, lampuki have not escaped the plight of fishing in the Mediterranean. Seasonal catches have steadily declined over the past few years, but demand remains high. There have even been times when Malta has imported lampuki from Spain and Tunisia to supplement low catches at home. There is much debate over the reason for fewer lampuki. A while back, the creation of kannizzati was affected when a pest decimated local palm trees and palm fronds were in short supply. However, it is amateur fishermen who are often blamed because they use professional fishermen’s kannizzati to catch their own handful of lampuki. By doing so, they disrupt the gathering fish, and it can take many days for shoals to re-assemble under the floats – if they return at all.

GOING GAGA FOR GALILEO FIGARO

Mediterranean Conference Centre, Valletta

As mega-hit musical phenomenon We Will Rock You arrives on Maltese shores for the first time, London performer Jordan Carr confirmed he will be raising roof as Galileo Figaro. You can watch this award-winning musical in Malta this month. What entices a West End star down to the small Mediterranean archipelago? It’s the sun, the sea… and performing back-to-back Queen classics, of course! Hot on the heels of its sell-out successes My Fair Lady and Mamma Mia!, FM Theatre Productions is staging We Will Rock You – one of the most popular musicals from London’s West End – for the first time in Malta. Stepping into the Maltese limelight is Jordan Carr. Originally from Northwest England, the stage is Jordan’s second home, and performing has taken him far and wide. He recently played the lead role in Boogie Nights in London, and has travelled the world with The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Beauty and the Beast. Now, Malta welcomes Jordan as Galileo Figaro, We Will Rock You’s central character – a dreamer reminiscent of Queen’s famous frontman. “I’m thrilled to be playing Galileo!” remarks Jordan, a first-timer to Malta. “I’m a huge fan of Queen – how can you not be? Freddie Mercury is an idol and all-round showman, so I can’t wait to rock out in Malta.” The musical by Queen and Ben Elton is based around the legendary British rock band’s greatest hits. Set in a dystopian future where we live on Planet Mall and we must all dress and act the same and music is strictly forbidden, We Will Rock You is a story of rebellion against the system. A group of Bohemians fight to restore free thought, fashion and – above all – music. “To be the first company in Malta to acquire the rights to the show is a fantastic accomplishment,” beams producer Edward Mercieca. “We Will Rock You always brings the house down, and we’ve got a stellar cast raring to perform Queen’s timeless and iconic songs.” Directed by Chris Gatt, the Maltese debut of We Will Rock You is set to be a theatrical highlight this autumn. “If you love Queen, you’ll be left with no choice but to clap and sing along,” promises Jordan. “I want the audience to leave ready to come back and rock with us again!” We Will Rock You is being staged at the Mediterranean Conference Centre, Valletta, on 18 October at 8pm and 19 and 20 October at 2.30pm and 8pm. MOVEMBER RO CK BALL MOVEMBER IS THE ONLY CHARITY TACKLING MEN’S HEALTH ON A GLOBAL SCALE, YEAR-ROUND (WWW.MOVEMBER.COM). THE GOAL IS SIMPLE: STOP MEN DYING TOO YOUNG. MOVEMBER WORLD WIDE Men’s health means physical and mental, and we’re aiming to reduce premature male deaths by 25% by 2030, so every contribution helps. Growing a moustache is one way of raising awareness, but donations go a long way too – it’s a global hair-affair, but the Maltese Mo-Bros and Sistas are on the rise, which is why you should read on (you’re probably 30,000 feet in the air right now, so really and truly, it’s the best thing you can do right now anyway). MOVEMBER IN MALTA No matter the country, the endgame is the same: in conjunction with Pink October Malta, Movember Malta is raising awareness about men’s health issues and that “being a man” means growing a pair and facing your fears, not sweeping them under the carpet. Growing a moustache or donating is only part of the job: self-check and visit a health professional to follow-up. BEHIND THE MALTESE MOUSTACHE Backing Movember Malta is the Marigold Foundation, a voluntary and non-profit organisation chaired by Mrs. Michelle Muscat, the wife of Malta’s Prime Minister. Together with Pink October and TBWA\ANG, Movember is set to make some noise by encouraging men, and women where applicable, to rock their best ‘staches for the month of November and raise funds for the Mo’ movement. Add in the Movember Rock Ball on the 23rd November at the Corinthia San Gorg Hotel, and we’ve got ourselves a real ‘stache-bash. THE MOVEMBER ROCK BALL All for one and rock for all, the Movember Rock Ball is set to be a fun and fund-raising event organised by TBWA\ANG in collaboration with the Marigold Foundation. A night where we’ll spin everything from Bowie to The Beatles, The Killers to The Kinks and more, local band Skarlet will be performing live, so on Saturday 23rd November, your €45 donation will not only go towards the most noble of causes, you’ll also get to enjoy a different kind of night out. Dress code? It’s being held at the Corinthia San Gorg, so it’s a unique chance to mix dapper with daring. GET IN TOUCH Fancy getting your dancing boots on? ST PETER’S POOL

GHAR DALAM CAVES

TAS-SILG

This is one of the most stunning natural swimming pools in Malta. Many people come here to snorkel and dive into the turquiose waters surrounded by flat rocks that transform the area into a natural pool. You might have to walk 3 kilometres to get here from the nearest road however if you are going by bus, make sure you bring everything you need!

Close to Birżebbuġa is the key historical site of Għar Dalam, meaning a dark cave. Għar Dalam provides the earliest evidence of human presence in Malta, with artefacts dating back 7,400 years to the Neolithic Period. The lowest layers of the caves contain the fossil bones of dwarf elephants, hippopotami, micromammals and birds.

Tas-Silġ is a vast megalithic complex covering 4,000 years of history located in the south-eastern part of Malta overlooking the magnificent harbour of Marsaxlokk bay, a well sheltered port. It occupies the most prominent highest point of the Delimara peninsula. Although the site is closed as excavation works are ongoing, it makes a spectacular vantage point.

FISH MARKET

FORT DELIMARA

ST LUCIAN TOWER

One cannot visit Marsaxlokk without paying a trip to the renowned fish market. Get there early on a Sunday morning for a slice of traditional Maltese life, as fishermen bring the fish from the boats to the stalls (look out for lampuki!). You can also find souvenirs, textiles and plenty of traditional sweets.

Fort Delimara is a 19th century military structure which formed part of a chain of fortifications designed to protect Marsaxlokk Harbour. The fort is mostly underground with ventilation apertures and access passageways spread out across the face of the cliff and out onto the seaward face of Delimara Point.

Fort San Lucian, also known as Saint Lucian Tower or Fort Rohan, is a large fortified watchtower and impressive polygonal fort in Marsaxlokk, Malta. The original tower was built by the Order of Saint John between 1610 and 1611, being the second of six Wignacourt towers.

WORDS WRITE ME ANYTHING

THERE’S NOTHING QUITE LIKE NOTTE BIANCA YEAR IN AND YEAR OUT, NOTTE BIANCA DELIVERS AN EARLY OCTOBER EVENING OF MUSIC, DANCE, THEATRE, ART AND – ABOVE ALL – FUN. BUT, WITH MALTA’S BIGGEST ARTS AND CULTURE FESTIVAL HAVING BEEN AROUND FOR SUCH A LONG TIME, ARE WE TO EXPECT MORE OF THE SAME THIS YEAR? THINK AGAIN!

Produced by Festivals Malta, Notte Bianca 2019 is ready to kickstart an autumnal calendar of artistic and cultural delights on 5 October.

a musical journey with, among others, the Malta Youth Orchestra, tenor Cliff Zammit Stevens, mezzo-soprano Clare Ghigo, singer Jasmine Abela, and an organ concerto by the Vatican’s Maestro Gianluca Libertucci at St John’s Co-Cathedral.

Antoine Farrugia, artistic director of Notte Bianca 2019, is on a mission to light up Valletta with a celebration of the arts that sits apart from the norm. This year, we’re in for a Notte Bianca that has listened to what people want and what they don’t want; this is the people’s festival.

Who doesn’t love a dance and sing-a-long? The Music Route is set to be a favourite with entertainers such as Owen Luelleen, Skald, Sterjotipi, Amber, Vinyl Paradise, JJoy and Christina Novelli. City Gate Steps, Fort St Elmo and Pjazza de Vallette will host the Installations Route, with light installations and artistic portrayals of traditional food, crafts and literature.

SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE “With such an array of artistic and cultural events happening across Malta every year, we’ve fallen into the trap of competing with ourselves,” explains Antoine, who is in full preparation mode for his first Notte Bianca as artistic director. “But, Notte Bianca is different from other festivals of the same ilk. We’re not just recycling shows that have already been seen in Malta – the shows you will see on the night were specifcally created and developed for Notte Bianca.”

The Kids’ Route, features the story of an unlikely friendship by the Żigużajg team; interactive games from Alka Ceramics that tackle the topic of fire; the story of the National Library through magic; a musical about children's vision of the future; and, a magical journey on a Maltese bus with characters from Maltese folklore.

Antoine is a visual artist who splits his time between his studio and producing events. In keeping with his artistic nature, Antoine has approached Notte Bianca 2019 as a unique piece of art. Knowing that people approach art from a variety of perspectives, Antoine, together with his team at Festivals Malta, has curated a Notte Bianca that works for everyone.

Along the Dance Route, Cheryl Lofreda presents choreography to Sam Christie’s indie tunes; Żugraga Dance embodies socioenvironmental issues; Moveo portrays harmonic interaction among structures, lighting and music; ŻfinMalta explores unity in response to human trafficking; and, Elise Ellul targets identity through social inclusion and exclusion.

“Valletta is a living city,” says Antoine with a smile. “So, we have used the city to infuse the festival with artistic performances that appeal to all. How? By creating seven themed routes for people to strategise their visit and not be sidetracked by battling crowds on the night.”

Finally there’s the Red Route, providing a variety of adult entertainment. At MUŻA, a war shelter transforms into a cabaret for crowds fleeing bombs, while 99 Strait Street, 6 Balconies, 6 Girls evokes the 'good old bad days' of Strait Street through burlesque. In Lejla Tango, Caroline Borg presents a tango show performed by Maestros to live music. Gwilym Bugeja parodies magic, and Steve Hili brings the laughs with James Ryder and Malcolm Galea.

WHICH ROUTE IS RIGHT FOR YOU? “It’s all well and good having innovative and memorable performances, but the reality is that people want a stress-free time,” explains Antoine. “Our routes are a leap in the right direction. For instance, for theatre-goers, we’ve got the theatre route – hop on the train at Castille Square and, among other sights, you’ll be taken to Fort St Elmo for a hilarious Catalan circus.”

“We’ve created seven Notte Bianca experiences rather than just a single catchall,” says Antoine proudly, “because what’s Notte Bianca about if not encouraging the Maltese community to get out and experience art and culture in our striking capital city?”

The Theatre Route also features clowns, magic, improvised theatre and even a comedy about a girl sued for singing out of tune – the musical is even being staged in the law courts. The Classic Route is

This has to be Malta’s most well known dip, and for a reason. When made well (it’s all in the seasoning and a few extra ingredients), it is delicious. You will find this all over Malta and usually served as part of an antipasti platter, along with some Maltese crackers (galletti) or Maltese ftira. So easy to make too, the beans just need to be soaked for a little while!

BIGILLA INGREDIENTS 250g ful ta’ ġirba (small dried beans - similar to dried broad beans but smaller) or dried broad beans 1tsp bicarbonate soda 1tsp salt 4 small garlic cloves 2tbsp chopped parsley 2tbsp chopped mint 2tbsp chopped oregano or marjoram 2tsp capers (optional) Juice of 1 lemon 3tbsp extra virgin olive oil (Maltese preferably) 1tbsp fresh chopped chilli or 1 tbsp dried chilli flakes (optional) Freshly cracked salt and pepper Extra virgin olive oil for drizzling Maltese galletti (crackers) to serve

METHOD Soak the beans in boiled water (enough to cover) together with the bicarbonate of soda and salt for 24 hours. Remove the soaked beans, drain and rinse. Place them into a pot with fresh water and bring to a boil. Immediately reduce to a simmer and cook for 1 hour and 30 minutes. While the beans are cooking, lightly fry the garlic cloves for five minutes until softened. In a large bowl mix the garlic, herbs, capers, lemon juice, olive oil and chili. Once the beans have been cooked, drain and add to the mixture. Using a hand blender blend everything together until you obtain a thick consistency. Season well with fresh cracked salt and pepper. When serving, drizzle some more olive oil (preferably Maltese olive oil). Garnish with chopped herbs and serve with Maltese galletti (crackers).

These are goals I wrote down in my journal at the beginning of the year and it has been amazing to execute the process in order to achieve these outcomes. OFFICIAL DESTINATION PARTNER

MALTA SEALS DEAL TO BE THE GLOBAL DESTINATION PARTNER OF

MANCHESTER UNITED

The Government of Malta and Manchester United Football Club, the world’s biggest and most supported football club, have sealed a multi-year agreement which sees Malta becoming the global destination partner of the club. The agreement was announced at an event at the AON Training Complex, Manchester United’s training ground, in the presence of Tourism Minister Dr Konrad Mizzi, Malta Tourism Authority Executive Chairman Dr Gavin Gulia and Mr Sean Jefferson, Director of Partnerships at Manchester United. The event was attended by Manchester United players Juan Mata, Andreas Pereira and Phil Jones and Manchester United legend Bryan Robson.

102

A I R M A LTA N E W S

This unprecedented partnership in Maltese history will see visitmalta.com’s logo being displayed prominently in and around the club’s historic Old Trafford ground during match days, as well as displayed on the club’s TV station, website and mobile application. Malta will also be featured on Inside United and United Review, the club’s two major publications. This agreement seeks to harness Manchester United’s gigantic following around the world. In fact, more than 1.1 billion people support or follow the club.

Mr Sean Jefferson commented that the club is proud of its association with the country and that Manchester United looks forward to working with the Maltese government to highlight Malta’s great qualities to the club’s international fan base. Malta Tourism Authority Executive Chairman Dr Gavin Gulia stated that this partnership cements the ties between the Club and Malta. Apart from the opportunities in the travel and tourism sectors, the partnership will also bring the club closer to the Maltese people. Ministry for Tourism Permanent Secretary Ronald Mizzi said that just like the Theatre of Dreams, Malta is indeed a dream destination and through this exciting and innovative partnership Malta can push boundaries, reach out to new territories and furthermore establish Malta on the map as the number one destination to visit. Tourism Minister Konrad Mizzi expressed his satisfaction at this landmark deal by saying that this agreement greatly complements the tourism strategy that government is pursuing to consolidate traditional markets such as the UK, whilst targeting new and non-traditional markets from the Eurasia region, where Man Utd holds very strong following. The agreement was sealed in the year of a historic anniversary for Malta-Manchester United relations. 2019 marks the 60th anniversary since the Manchester United Supporters’ Club Malta was formed, the oldest Manchester United supporters’ club in the world. During his visit, Tourism Minister Konrad Mizzi was accompanied by Mr Ronald Mizzi, Dr Gavin Gulia and Mr Alex Cutajar, along with other officials.

TRANSMITTING PORTABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICES (PEDS)

NON-TRANSMITTING PORTABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICES (PEDS)

Devices that can send or receive data by wireless means, such as mobilephones and tablets, may be used during all phases of the flight provided their transmit/receive capabilities such as GSM & Wi-fi are switched off. Devices working on Bluetooth wireless connectivity are allowed. If the device has ‘Flight Mode’ capability, this must be enabled. Such devices shall be safely secured in the customers’ hand (handheld) or a pocket during taxi, take-off and landing. Larger devices (e.g. laptops) shall be switched off and stowed away safely during taxi, takeoff and landing. Accessories, such as headphones, must not obstruct access to the aisle. If the data transmission capability cannot be switched off (whilst the device is operating), the device itself must be switched off for the duration of the flight.

These could include, but are not limited to, items such as DVD players, electronic games, music players and personal cameras. Such devices shall be safely secured in the customers’ hand (handheld) or a pocket during taxi, take-off and landing. Larger devices shall be stowed away safely during taxi, take-off and landing.

L APTOPS AND NOTEBOOKS Such devices may be used during boarding and during flight but not during taxi, take-off and landing. Any built-in data connectivity such as Bluetooth or Wi-Fi must be disabled. These devices must be stowed away safely during taxi, take-off and landing since they could hinder an emergency evacuation.

ARE THERE TIMES WHEN I CANNOT USE MY ELECTRONIC DEVICES?

CAN I USE HEADPHONES? Personal headphones can be used during all phases of the flight. However, we ask you to remove your headphones during the safety briefing. For safety reasons, customers sitting in an emergency exit row must refrain from using headphones during taxi, take-off and landing.

Under certain circumstances, your Flight Crew or Cabin Crew may ask you to switch off all Personal Electronic Devices. This may happen during automatic landings, low visibility takeoff or landing, or during emergency situations.

I SHOULD INFORM THE CABIN CREW WHEN … your portable electronic device is damaged, becomes hot, produces smoke, is lost, or falls into the seat structure. If safe to do so, the device must be switched off immediately.

If you require more information, please refer to the table below which includes a list of Personal Electronic Devices (PEDs) which can be used onboard Air Malta flights by phase of flight. Please do not hesitate to contact any member of our cabin crew if you have any further questions.
