Mdina is our old capital, our Medina, where heritage and culture are aplenty and chocolate cake is the ultimate talk of the town. The narrow streets and quirky architectural features make for some splendid shots and somehow imbue a tinge of romance. It might be the crisp feeling in the air or the medieval atmosphere but hand-holding might be on your agenda when you visit this magical city. Keep your afternoons flexible as the fantastic weather in November might call for an adventure; there’s always something new to discover. Have a safe flight,

From Paper to Glass AN INTERVIEW WITH KANE CALI WORDS BY Kristina Cassar Dowling PHOTOGRAPHY BY Alexandra Pace

very form of art has a starting point and an eventual end-point. The journey in arriving to this end-point is different for every artist as is the method, philosophy and result. When it comes to Kane Cali, a Digital-Glass Artist whose passion and intellect is as experimental as his artwork – magical transformations take place. A short visit to Kane’s studio helped to rekindle the dormant flame within me – the artistic flame fuelled by passion, intellect and experimentation. As you reach the Kane Cali Studio, a big grey door with two overlapping triangles greet you. Two symbols that represent Kane’s image, his name and his style. Open the doors to a space that encases all Kane has to offer. Looking around with a curious tinge and an element of suspense in my mind, a few elements caught my eye. First of all, an Art in Theory reference book that highlights all the art movements from 1900 till 2000 – basically the bible of art theory, the build-up for concepts, visions and manifestos. Noticing this book from the off-set of our interview put the entire meeting into perspective, it allowed me to see where Kane’s knowledge was rooted – he’s an intellectual creator and his art shows this perfectly. With every art piece on display, Kane’s technique and creativity shine through. There’s no doubt that his meticulous precision and unquestionable finesse soar through his work. A collection of pieces that stood out in his portfolio brought a fun yet controlled element to the table. A series of miniature heads sliced at the crown covered his work space creating an aura of intrigue and posed a multitude of questions. We spoke about the ‘hows’ and the ‘whys’ in creating this particular collection. The process carried out involves many steps and different applications of technique. This journey starts off with a model whose area of focus is scanned, for this particular study the model’s head was the focus point. This information is then 3D printed – resulting in a tangible 3D head. This preliminary piece in itself is quite impressive and in my opinion can stop right there but for Kane the destiny of his works is far greater.

Before this 3D head-shaped paper can take its intended shape and form, another step is required. A soft material is introduced, a putty that hardens around figures to create a mould.
‘head’ should he cut off? A strange concept that doesn’t entirely need to be answered. It’s aesthetic appeal. It’s the artist’s prerogative and he left quite the impression on me, so I guess his intentions have been met.
When creating figures cast in cement, Kane simply applies the putty on the object, usually a 3D render of his subject. When glass figures are introduced an additional piece of equipment is needed - a specialised glass kiln. Here molten glass is poured into a mould and popped into the 800°C oven. Some more waiting time is required here but with Kane’s intense workload there’s not a minute to waste.
The majority of Kane’s works-in-progress revolve around the human figure but there is one collection that in my opinion is pure genius and shows off his greatest assets – his ability to manipulate glass.
Once the cement and glass models are unleashed from their silicon cover, a masterpiece emerges and a concept finally starts to take shape. As the pink plastic-like substance is removed from the model, key elements in the work of art are revealed. Every miniature facial feature captured in the model’s 3D print is delicately represented, with every crack in the cement and trapped air bubble in the final piece – beauty is created. Kane, though, takes it one step further. He creates a metaphor that transcends the norm and breaks boundaries. Who would think of slicing a human head? Granted, Kane is working with cement or glass models of human heads and not actual heads but questions still arise. It’s intriguing. One other thing that caught my eye and evoked more questions to gallop through my mind was the angle at which the heads were severed, how much
If we conducted a survey asking locals to pin-point Malta’s most iconic symbol, I think we’d have a good portion of people mention pastizzi. Picture some pastizzi, the flaky exterior and dense (yet delicious) interior must pop into your mind. Now, unravel that image, scramble your vision and open your eyes to pastizzi made solely out of coloured glass. For the time being, you’ll have to take my word for it but these life-size, coloured glass works of art are magnificent but soon enough you’ll be able to feast on the beauty of coloured pastizzi. Their intended purpose is to replicate or rather reminisce on the beautifully stained-windows that soared in the Gothic period and feature in many cathedrals and abbeys throughout Europe. Imagine an arch of coloured pastizzi reflecting coloured light onto a grand entrance, imagine the colour and the fascinating effect it would create. This profound way of thinking is what Kane Cali stands for. Pushing the boundaries by incorporating something so generic and elevating it to stand out and be seen.

MALTA'S MOST HAUNTED PLACES WORDS BY Teodor Reljić

MOS T HAUNTED
W
e take a trip down some of the creepiest places in Malta, so you don’t have to. But you will anyway, won’t you?
Everyone’s perception of Malta is bound to be different, but one thing that’s difficult to deny is that the island is simply drenched in history. From housing some of the most ancient free-standing sculptures of the world to playing host to a wide array of colonial forebears, the stamp of various epochs remains imprinted on this fortified Mediterranean jewel. Which also makes it the perfect breeding ground for ghosts. From cathedrals to catacombs and buildings snug in narrow byways, Malta is the sheltering place for ghosts with a grudge to bear or a tragedy to nurse. If you’re a believer, the history
From cathedrals to catacombs and buildings snug in narrow byways, Malta is the sheltering place for ghosts with a grudge to bear or a tragedy to nurse
argument should be enough for you – many people passed through Malta, and some are bound to not have left her with serenity in mind. But even the sceptics among us are bound to accept that the atmospheric locations that dot the island will inevitably stoke the imagination to go into dark places once the sky is dark and the silver moon shines bright… With that in mind, here are some of the most popular haunted places around the island. Warning, or invitation? It’s really up to you to decide. VERDAL A PAL ACE , BUSKE T T This one has it all – a lush palace ensconced in one of Malta’s most expansive woodland areas, and the grisly fallout of Bad Romance. It concerns a woman of high birth who knew what she wanted and was punished for it: the niece of Grand Master De Rohan to be exact, who was forced into a marriage with a

suitor not of her liking. It’s not hard to see why, judging by the ungentlemanly way the same man dealt with this supposed problem – namely, locking the poor girl in one of the rooms of Verdala Palace. In desperation, she flung one of the windows open to make her escape. But instead, she plummeted to her death… her blue dress shimmering under the moonlight as she made her way down.
The ghost of a girl rumoured to have been run over by a car is said to haunt the stretch of road, and those who spotted her emaciated frame crawling on the ground with her arm stretched out in supplication, claim that she demanded to be picked up. Unsurprisingly, however, ‘ghostly hitchhikers’ aren’t really in anyone’s good books… so they just sped away in terror and confusion.
The ‘Blue Lady’ can now be seen in mirrors of the palace. Eagle-eyed ramblers have also confessed to seeing her perched on the palace balconies. Could it be that, like many other ghosts, she stuck on a loop… reliving her fateful moment and wondering which parts of the palace, exactly, would have made for a better escape route?
Only to find the young girl in their backseat. What happened next is rarely recorded, or even talked about by survivors.
IT-TELGĦA T ’ALL A U OMMU, NA X X AR As if the name of the hill culminating at the outskirts of Naxxar wasn’t evocative enough – ‘The Hill of God and His Mother’ – an urban legend doubtlessly concocted by jittery motorists lends this long, steep incline an even keener edge.
THE SPLENDID, VALLE T TA Now rehabilitated as a high-end performance venue in the spruced-up former red light district that is Strait Street, Valletta, The Splendid in fact started life as a brothel. And you can probably guess where a ghost story involving a brothel is heading. Yes, it’s another depressing case of masculine privilege devolving into violence, as an argument between prostitute and client ended with the woman being murdered on the venue’s first-floor bathroom.

MOS T HAUNTED
To this day, rehearsing actors and musicians have reported furniture mysteriously being shifted in random rooms of the charmingly dilapidated venues. Some have even said that chairs have been hurled with some violence on the upper floors, though whether this was a ghost or simply a theatre director throwing a tantrum remains to be confirmed. V I L L A S A N S S O U C I – M A R S A XLO K K This crumbling colonial building – first constructed by Prof Salvatore Luigi Pisani CMG, MD in the 1870s – is a full-on powder keg of creepiness. Used as a hotel in the early part of the 20th century and then taken up by the Royal Air Force in the 1940s, the still-standing columns of its façade evoke its former glory. But the rest of the crumbling, gutted building makes for a bleak site. Seen during a cloudy day, the Villa’s frame makes for a perfect Gothic poster image – decadence and decay existing side-by-side. Perhaps this is why ghosts have reportedly swarmed the building and made it their hangout. Those brave – or stupid – enough to venture into the unstable structure have all confessed to feeling a keen sense of dread during their stay. We wonder why.

MEDICAL TOURISM
MULTIPLE MISSING TEETH 1. Tooth-wear: Biting and having to chew on less teeth leads to tooth-wear. Over a long period these remaining teeth lose height and appear very smooth as they are being overused. 2. Tooth fracture: These standing teeth often suffer tooth fracture and/or de-coronation (breaking the crown of the tooth leaving just the roots). 3. Tooth mobility: Teeth are supported in their sockets thanks to the gingival tissue, in particular to the periodontal ligament fibres attaching them to bone. If teeth are under excessive stress then this ligament suffers and with time teeth start moving resulting in tooth loss. This may also cause the teeth to drift outwards, splaying themselves increasing the spaces between them. 4. Tooth pain: Overloading of these teeth may result in them dying off requiring root canal treatment and further prosthetic work. 5. Bone loss: Loss of teeth in either jaw results in bone loss as the bone does not receive a stimulus due to the lack of tooth roots. Over a long period, the volume of bone loss may be very large. This would mean that if implants are planned, bone grafting would be required increasing the element of surgery for the patient and complexity for the Dentist/Surgeon. 6. Tooth migration: Missing teeth would cause remaining teeth to drift into the resultant space creating odd contacts on chewing, excessive toothwear facets as well as inconvenient food packing around these remaining teeth. Upper teeth often over-erupt into the space of the lower missing teeth due
to lacking their antagonist to chew on. Over a number of years these upper teeth may completely descend into the space of the lower missing teeth causing traumatic biting onto the gum. These upper teeth would also appear very long, exposing their roots reducing their aesthetics. Adding insult to injury these upper over-erupted teeth would on closure, take up the space of the missing lower teeth not leaving any space for the dentist to replace the lower missing teeth.
A CASE STUDY: A determined elderly lady nearing her 85th birthday wishes to fulfill her lifelong wish to fix her teeth. In total she has lost 15 teeth limiting the range of food she can eat. Her treatment consisted of a fixedmovable bridge solution in the lower jaw consisting of 14 porcelain teeth. In the upper jaw she underwent surgery and placed 8 dental implants with simultaneous bilateral bone grafting resulting in a fully fixed implant prosthesis consisting of 14 porcelain teeth.
7. Dento-Facial aesthetics: Cheeks tend to collapse inwards resulting in poorer aesthetics giving rise to an older looking appearance. 8. Digestive problems: Chewing our food mixed with our saliva is the first stage of digestion. If food is not chewed but gobbled instead, this may result in indigestion and acid build-up. Patients, who lack many teeth, also stir away from eating certain foods resulting in a lack of nutritional intake. The list goes on and on. It is never too late to replace your missing dentition. The repercussions are serious. Take action now and ask your dentist for advice

THE M ALTESE LANGUAGE: O L D, A L LU R I N G A N D R I C H WORDS BY Liliana Risiott
Some find it rather surprising that a surviving dialect of Arabic is actually an official language of the European Union. The Maltese language is in fact a distinct, unique language and the only Semitic language written in Latin characters. Like the island itself, the Maltese language has a rich, alluring history dating back to the ninth century. An early theory was that il-Malti (Maltese) developed from Carthaginian or Punic. Carthaginian was a form of Phoenician, according to historian Giacomo Bosio who wrote about it in his book The History of the Sacred Religion and Illustrious Militia of St John of Jerusalem of 1602. Further studies indicate that this is difficult to establish since Carthaginian and Arabic are both Semitic languages developed from the same roots. For centuries, many a scholar researched and founded theories only to be disputed and updated, but as for Maltese being referred to as a stand-alone language, it was Pawlu Peregrino that in 1436, in his will, endorsed the language as lingua maltensi. The island of Malta from its very birth was for centuries occupied by settlers and conquerors alike. Following the invasion of the Bronze Age Peoples, between 800 B.C.E. and 870 C.E. Malta was colonised by the Phoenicians, dominated
by the Carthaginians and subsequently by the Roman and Byzantine Empires until the Arabs, who in turn invaded and occupied Sicily in 827. During this time, a Sicilian-Arabic (Siculo-Arabic) language was established in Sicily. Between the 9th and 14th century this became rife in Malta too but whilst it became extinct in Sicily by 1300, it continued to be spoken in the Maltese Islands. Arab domination in Malta lasted over two hundred years, during which time a new dialect was born, the Arabic Maltese dialect. The natives who also managed to distance it from other ifrikiyens dialects supported this new form of communication. Malta’s history of invasion and occupation by different nations and empires has undoubtedly influenced not only the formation, but also the enrichment of its mother tongue. Malta was in turmoil for many years. Between 909 and 1224 following the conquering of Malta by the Fatimids (Tunisians and Egyptians), the Byzantine Empire’s bid to recapture the island followed by the invasion of the Normans, the uprisal of the Arabs, the Genoese influence and the Swabians until the final expulsion of Arabs in 1224. It may have been a trying time for the Maltese Islands but all conquerers left their mark not only in relics which are today’s treasured patrimony, but also in the formation and enrichment of the Maltese language.

The Maltese language continues to thrive and develop by adopting new words but still owning a few which many foreigners find impossible to pronounce The foundations for Malta’s own language were being lain. The first known Maltese dictionary was published in 1649 whilst the first known literary text in Maltese, Il Cantilena, surfaced during the 15th century. The latter, a poem, attributed to Pietru Caxaro (1410-1485) was found in 1996 by two Maltese researchers, Professor Godfrey Wettinger and Father Michael Fsadni. The twenty-line poem, written in old Maltese, was discovered on the last page of a notarial register with five introductory lines in Sicilian, written by Brandano, the notary’s nephew, and was written sometime between 1533 and 1563. For four centuries (between 1426 and 1829), scholars studied and researched the origins of Maltese, some attributing its roots to Punic, others to Arabic with both having one thing in common: Maltese is a Semitic language. The Italian language seeped in and gradually became Malta’s official language with Latin being predominantly used by the Catholic Church whilst Maltese remained the language of the people. The French left their mark between 1798-1800 when General Napoleon Bonaparte and his armies invaded Malta, and English was introduced with colonial administration and army in 1800, although Italian remained predominant.
Language in Malta became a very sensible issue. The British attempted to replace Italian, using the Maltese language as a tool to broadcast their propaganda to the ordinary Maltese people. There followed a socio-political dispute among the Maltese with some in favour of retaining Italian as an official language, others insisting on English whilst fervent Maltese politicians, authors and scholars, for many years struggled for the Maltese language to be recognised as the official language of the Maltese Islands. This was achieved in installments: in 1921 the new Constitution provided the right to debate in Maltese as well as in Italian and English in the Senate and legislative Council. Only in 1934 did Maltese, along with the English language, become the official language and so recognised in the Constitution of Malta. The Maltese language continues to thrive and develop by adopting new words but still owning a few which many foreigners find impossible to pronounce. This, however, makes it all the more interesting to discover and learn. It is after all that unique language, one of the oldest still alive and one of the newer languages formalised by an alphabet, a spelling and a grammar.

GOZO
Five ways to enjoy Gozo’s blissful outdoors this autumn
PHOTOS BY Chris Davies
Gozo is appreciated for its slower pace of life, where visitors can leave behind the city clutter and enjoy the beauty of nature. Now that the summer heat has eased into welcoming warmth, the island’s climate and geography combine to make it an ideal playground for lovers of adventure and the great outdoors. BREAK IN YOUR HIKING BOOTS Gozo is just 14kmX7km yet the visitor is rapidly rewarded with an unspoilt, rugged landscape, from pretty villages to rural countryside to prominent hills and dramatic coastlines. The combination of this provides the rambler many wonderful experienes. From peaceful country and hill walks to rambles along cliff-tops with panoramic views; from coastal paths, past extraordinary natural features to heritage trails through the alleyways of the Knights of St John or the unique prehistoric landscape, Gozo offers a unique experience. ON YOUR BIKE The island offers a variety of bike routes that cater for novices and can also challenge the most experienced of riders. Whatever your level of expertise, Gozo’s meandering country paths and old streets will definitely tickle your fancy. One of the best ways to really sample what the island is all about is to get off the beaten track, rent a bike and follow the signs of the SIBIT project. The SIBIT route in Gozo runs around the entire coast, through as many as 14 villages, and takes in most of Gozo’s main sights, both natural and historic.
GLIDING FUN Going on a segway tour is a relatively new way to discover Gozo’s hidden treasures. This two-wheeled, self-balancing scooter is easy to use and especially comfortable if hiking is not your thing. There are several routes that have been prepared especially for this eco-friendly mode of transportation. MILD SEA TEMPERATURE Gozo’s mild winters mean that the sea temperature is warm for most of the year. This makes water-sports practicable throughout the year. There are several ways in which you can make the most of Gozo’s beautiful sea in autumn diving, kayaking, and paddleboarding are perhaps the most popular activities, for a true experience of the beautiful Mediterranean sea surrounding the island. ROCK ON Enjoy Gozo’s unique landscape the adventurous way. Cliffs, caves, coves – the island’s geology is unique and spectacular and if you are the adventurous type, you will be definitely entertained as you climb or abseil one of the natural rock formations, against the backdrop of the beautiful Mediterranean sea.

NGOS
IN MALTA WORDS BY Tia Reljic
Malta’s most active NGOs are at the forefront of heritage conservation, environment protection, as well as human and animal rights. They shed light on some of the most pressing issues on the island, while others represent aspects of the society and push for social issues. In a way, they are a good representation of what matters most in Malta. NGOs are non-governmental organisations – so it makes sense for them to pick up where the government leaves off. Making money is not a priority, so NGOs focus on giving a voice to diverse groups of people whilst tackling a variety of issues – and there is no shortage of them on the Maltese islands. HERITAGE Din L-Art Ħelwa – Natural Trust of Malta has been working to protect the historic heritage of Malta since 1965, restoring important cultural sites such as buildings, monuments, and the natural environment. Similarly, Wirt Għawdex has focused on safeguarding the natural, archaeological and anthropological heritage in Malta’s sister islands – Gozo and Comino. ENVIRONMENT The Maltese islands are home to a large population, pristine beaches, and a fragile countryside. For this reason, groups protecting the environment are vital, and Friends of the

Earth Malta succeeded in merging together a variety of environmental groups and activists to work together. Nature Trust Malta have been around since the 1960s, under Natural History Society of Malta – making it one of the oldest NGOs dealing with environmental issues on the island, aggressively lobbying for legal protection of plants and animals among other important efforts. HUMAN RIGHTS Aditus Foundation was established by a group of young lawyers looking to make justice accessible to all people. Victim Support Malta provides important information to victims of both reported and unreported crimes – for free. NGOs working for full gender and marriage equality such as MGRM and Gender Liberation have helped the country on its path to becoming a world leader in LGBTQI+ rights. ANIMAL WELFARE Malta is home to hundreds of different birds, and is situated on a major migration route for a variety of species. Birdlife Malta focuses on protecting wild birds and their habitats, working to put an end to illegal bird hunting and trapping by responding to reports, conducting research, and campaigning. NGOs such as Animal Care Malta, Association for Abandoned Animals, and Noah’s Ark care for stray animals and provide shelter for abandoned animals.

HIKING TRAILS
IN NORTHERN MALTA & GOZO
WORDS BY Antoine Borg Micallef
Y
ou may very well be forgiven for not mentioning the Maltese Islands when pondering on a green and lush destination to visit for outdoor activities during this time of year. But despite boasting a typical Mediterranean climate, Autumn in Malta is a very fresh and wet season, punctuating the scorching summer temperatures and the chilling winters. In fact, the first postsummer rain serves as a catalyst that breathes new life into an otherwise uninspiring and arid landscape. Maltese habitats have thrived over the millennia by striking a delicate balance between the dramatic change of seasonality and the various species of foliage and wildlife that inhabit the islands. Visitors to the country during the autumn months will be astonished as the shear breadth of vivid wild flowers that permeate through the emerald and olive hues of the countryside. And what better way to soak these rich colours in than by taking one of the many hiking trails that pepper the northern parts of Malta and the sister island of Gozo. As an activity, hiking presents a multitude of benefits that will surely complement your vacation. Apart from the
standard overall health benefits associated with physical activity, hiking also contributes to reduced stress levels and a general elevation of your mood. In addition, it is also a great way of acquiring your daily dose of Vitamin D, which is pretty easy when one considers that Malta is one of the sunniest countries in Europe. So, if you fancy a spot of rambling during your upcoming stay in Malta, there are a number of idyllic sites to consider adding to your itinerary. One of the most prominent trails to take in the island of Malta is the walk along the Victoria Lines. These fortified defensive walls were constructed by the British during their occupancy of the country, and completed during the same year of Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee in 1897. The lines effectively run from the west coast of Malta at Kunċizzjoni close to Fomm ir-Riħ Bay, all the way to the east coast up until Madliena Fort. Visitors to this particular hiking trail can expect a diverse scenery that is replete with cliff sides, typical Maltese valleys and watercourses, and military buildings such as forts, batteries, and walls.

Other interesting sites to also consider in the northern part of Malta include Miġra l-Ferħa, situated on the western sea coast beneath the Mtaħleb Chapel in the limits of Rabat. This area offers long uninterrupted walks across a wild and natural landscape, framed by vertical cliffs that plunge into the blue Mediterranean Sea. The island of Gozo is well-known for its undulating and hilly topography, which provide a breath-taking setting for walking and hiking during the day. One of the most iconic sites is Ta’ Ċenċ Cliffs - an area of rugged natural beauty home to a number of protected sea birds - as well as important archaeological remains that include dolmens and cart ruts. If you are planning to take this particular trail, make sure to cap it off with a visit to Mġarr ix-Xini Bay, which happens to be one of Gozo’s most picturesque natural sea gorges. Alternative hiking trail choices in Gozo also include the area surrounding Xlendi Tower, a natural trail in Nadur next to Sopu Tower, and also a scenic hike between Wardija Point and Dwejra. The Maltese countryside might not seem like they have much to offer in terms of untouched natural landscapes, but hiking through the various trails that dot Gozo and Northern Malta will surely be a magical experience. So put on your most comfortable shoes and venture out into the cool and sunny terrain, accompanied by the sweet smell of Malta’s autumn.

Deeper into the heart of Paris SUBMITTED BY Air Malta
P
aris is over-crowded and over-priced. But this is something that is to be expected from one of Europe’s top tourist destinations. While the Eiffel Tower, The Louvre and Notre Dame are almost always at the top of every tourist’s to-do list if you take the time to do some exploring it is easy to find many reasons to fall in love with gay ol’ Paree, no matter how many clichés she represents. She is, after all, the city of love and offers magical experiences hard to beat anywhere in the world. All you have to do is dig a little deeper. BELLEVILLE There’s always been the trendy and hipster parts of the city and Montmartre and La Marais, cool as they are, are becoming more and more popular with the tourists and, in turn, pricier by the day. Belleville is the answer if you’re looking for hip and cool without the price tag. Lacking the finesse of Montmartre and La Marais, this working-class cosmopolitan neighbourhood is gritty-cool and a jungle of Chinese supermarkets, African stores, Tunisian restaurants and French cafés. Mostly frequented by the Parisian bourgeois-bohèmes tourists are few and far between in this neighbourhood. Spend an afternoon exploring the quirky Rue Denoyez, a lane crammed with graffiti, street-art, and murals, followed
by a drink at the legendary Café Aux Folies (an Edith Piaf favourite) and you’ll understand why it is so easy to fall in love with this whimsical neighbourhood. PARIS BY NIGHT Paris has some incredible sights; the Louvre, Sacré-Coeur, Notre Dame, the Eiffel Tower. These are all spots you need to see at least once in your lifetime. But as romantic as these great pieces of history sound, jostling with tourists wielding selfie sticks takes away a lot of the grandeur. If you’d rather take in these sights on your own, try visiting them at night. Although you won’t be able to get inside, they are all beautifully lit and equally impressive when the night falls with the added bonus of being (mostly) tourist free. If you’d rather spend your night partying, take a trip to the iconic club Les Bains in the third arrondissement. The 19th century bathhouse was home to many resident DJs before they acquired international fame, among them David Guetta as well as impromtu performances of the likes of Prince and Depeche Mode. Regular party-goers included Mick Jagger, Johnny Depp and Kate Moss rubbing shoulders with both the underground and the glamorous, the big names and the nobodies, all mingling by the mosaic tile pool. Re-opened quietly last year after being closed for five years, this time
as a 39-room boutique hotel, with a smaller club in the basement and a restaurant that literally shines. Le Mask provides a different experience altogether. This Eyes-Wide-Shut kind of night out will see you swinging from the chandeliers among modern day Casanovas. Decadence and anonymity are guaranteed as masks are de rigueur. PARIS CATACOMBS Running beneath the City of Light is a much more sinister world - the underground limestone tunnels that run beneath the city. By the 18 th century the tunnels were used for burial purposes as the largest Parisian cemetery Les Innocents, were becoming overpopulated leading to improper burials, open graves and unearthed corpses and resulting diseases and the remains of the people buried there were eventually exhumed and moved to the quarries. Though the tunnels run some 300km only a small portion is open to the public, with access to any other area being illegal since 1955. They were used during World War II by the French Resistance and also for Nazi bunkers. In more recent years the catacombs are used by cataphiles (lovers of underground) for parties and concerts with many secret entrances to the tunnels throughout the city. Planning a trip to the catacombs? Be sure to stick to parts open to the
public as getting lost in the catacombs is inevitable. There is a legend of a man who got lost and died in the catacombs in 1973 and his body was not found for another 11 years. L A PETITE CEINTURE If you like your cities with a generous dose of quirk, take a trip to the 11th arrondissement to the defunct railway tracks of La Petite Ceinture. Abandoned since 1934, the railways are now overgrown with weeds and bright flowers whilst its walls are masked with graffiti. FOOD AND WINE If you are one to travel for food and wine, Paris has no shortage of food markets, Michelin-starred restaurants as well as bistros and bakeries on every corner. If you really want to take a piece of Paris home with you try a cooking course. Home of the world-renowned Cordon Bleu, Paris knows a thing or two about cookery courses. Leave the city with the skills to bake your own macarons or croissants for a souvenir that lasts for life. France without wine would just be an incomplete trip and while the vineyards and chateaux are outside of Paris, you can get the most comprehensive tour of French wines. The Maltese Girl Who Cried Fashion WORDS BY Alessia Caruana
T
oday I've been summoned to the round table to discuss one of my favourite subjects of all: fashion. Que Madonna's Vogue in the background and hit the lights because this piece promises to be as show stopping as the time Chanel sent a little black dress down the runway. One can only hope. Call me your Maltese Miranda Priestly; if you have no idea who she is I suggest you stop everything and anything you're doing and watch The Devil Wears Prada immediately because you are evidently the problem with this article. Oh the Maltese, bless their intentions and wholehearted attempts to join forces with the Anna Wintours and Franca Sozzanis of the world. There was a time where it felt like a Maltese woman stood more of a chance of catching cholera than good taste. I kid you not, leggings as pants were a thing for a very, very painfully long time. But let's be honest, not everyone is as fashion ‘unconscious’ as those who wear black underwear under a white dress; the Maltese have come a long way since peplum skirts and boleros as jackets and they deserve credit for it. Indeed the Maltese woman has upped her fashion game. Who do we have to thank for this? Television, Joan Rivers, ridiculously well-dressed Italian news casters and presenters, Instagram, and my personal favourite, the refusal to settle for mediocrity. Our great great grandparents had it tough way back when the Għonnella was a thing, how were any of our ancestors expected to make that work? Insularity was always Malta’s worst enemy. It wasn't just about being born with taste and style or exposure to the fashion capitals of the world, it was about looking at a garment not just as a means to cover yourself and get out the door but as a means of expression and transformation. Who do you want to be today? What do you aim to achieve tomorrow? Will you get that job? Not in those shoes you won't.
Don’t get me wrong, it's not just about heels and dresses, it's about you and you saying something through a coat. Fashion should serve as a means to assert who you are to the world. It's not about vanity, it's about wanting more for yourself, it's about caring enough to not wear beige every day and look like you just rolled out of the bed or the shower. Girls who wear make-up and care about the way they look, shouldn't need to be judged because you don't care as much. This has nothing to do with insecurity, I put make-up on because I want to, because it makes me feel like me, so thanks for your judgement but for your sake I hope it came with a gift receipt because quite frankly no one has time for your negativity. There's no right or wrong way to do things, it isn't even about having money for that matter. Money can buy you Gucci but that doesn't mean it can buy you style. Rest assured if you're trying to look like Kylie Jenner or Kim Kardashian, that's exactly what you're going to look like; you're trying. More Maltese seem to be learning to shy away from this mentality and own their own personal style. When Audrey Hepburn wore a black turtleneck, she did it because she wanted to and turned the style into a phenomenon overnight. When Diana Vreeland and Iris Apfel walked out looking like full-blown works of art, they got applause not criticism because they looked like themselves. They did them, all day, every day and got recognised and respected for doing just that. Slowly but surely the Maltese are breaking out of their little shell and are learning that wearing lime pants to Fashion Week doesn't make you stylish. Let's take a minute to talk about this too; many Maltese are under the impression that they're only expected to look ‘stylish’ during this one week a year. Oh the lengths some people will go to in order to look 'fashionable‘ and attract the attention of one of the six photographers in the vicinity.
Oh the Maltese, bless their intentions and wholehearted attempts to join forces with the Anna Wintours and Franca Sozzanis of the world

You'll see strange hair, velvet and a lot of mismatched clothes (because nothing says you're avant garde more than pairing polka dots with florals). But come Monday, they're back to looking like a New Look mannequin. No! You carry style with you everywhere, everyday, there's no such thing as turning it on and off. I'll close this piece off with this; during graduation some three years ago, what stood out to me the most was not the dresses everyone pre ordered from Asos or Boohoo; it was this one girl wearing brogues (for the fashionably challenged, a brogue is a fancy men’s shoe) instead of heels. I remember thinking brogues instead of heels for graduation, unheard of! But most of all I thought how much I admired her disregard for what was expected, and wished I had done the same. She stood out because she got it, and the more people like her continue to get it, the closer Malta gets to getting that fashion isn't about looking fashionable, it's about using fashion to look like yourself. Now wasn't that as groundbreaking as wearing florals in Spring. Here’s hoping you go home and throw out those leggings now; we all have a pair hiding somewhere.

THE DIGITAL AGE WORDS BY Paul Vassallo
I hate technology. This utterance remains a recurring theme in the workplace and at home, typically employed in order to emphasise the person’s reluctance to utilise some new-age ‘doohickey’ which will be outmoded in a month and archaic in a year. Yet there are also perpendicularly-minded people who will continuously strive to acquire the most modern gadgets and riding on the crest of the next wave of digital devices. However, the modern age of digitalisation is not as modern as we think. Defined as the information age, our first steps began in the 1970s with the introduction of the personal computer, which allowed the transfer of information in a swift, free form. Now, companies and nations across the globe compete to remain the forerunners of the tech-crunching race. Malta too has put aside the abacus and opened its doors to this new age, but to what extent? Technology can start at home. A recent qualitative EU-wide study on technology and young children, carried out by a group of University of Malta researchers for the European
Commission, has found that infants have a strong attraction towards the large, sleek smartphones and user-friendly touchscreens that have become a part of our daily lives. Ten Maltese families volunteered for the EU study, all having at least one child between six to seven years old. It may be important to note that these families were selected from various parts of the Maltese islands and with different income. Most of the children were allowed to use their parents’ smartphones to play games and watch YouTube videos, and some were even permitted to make phone calls, send text messages, and take photos and videos using their phone. According to the study, most of these families also had at least one tablet in their household, and half the children had their own personal tablet to use. These children used their tablet to listen to and read e-books, though it is interesting to note that the children all stated that they preferred to read the printed word. In addition, it was not just the handheld, portable tech that was favoured by these young
Yet there are also perpendicularly-minded people who will continuously strive to acquire the most modern gadgets and riding on the crest of the next wave of digital devices consumers. The television, which was claimed to “not able to hold on to any market... after the first six months” (Darryl Zanuck, executive at 20th Century Fox, 1946), was a common prevalent in all the households subjected to this study. Three of the children even had a TV in their bedroom. One family, however, held mixed feelings towards technology. The younger infant, aged three, had been prohibited from accessing any sort of digital device, following an addiction that had begun at the age of 18 months. Fellow family members avoided using or referring to technology in front of the boy. In other families, the infants were the masters of digitalisation in the household. One child commented that he would aid his mother with her tablet by “going in the settings, because there won’t be enough space to download a game.” On the other end of the age spectrum, statistics released by the European Commission’s statistics office Eurostat state that 67% of Maltese aged 55 and over have never used the internet. This extensive portion of Maltese society has been excluded from engaging in online activity, which might provide certain benefits to their own health and wellbeing, aid in possible social isolation, improved contact with public authorities, and access to entertainment and publicly-available information. A seminar led by the Malta Communication Authority will form part of a larger eAgeing programme of initiatives, focused on bridging the gap between generations and outlining difficulties encountered by older generations in attempting to access and use
newer forms of technology. This seminar also focused on highlighting the health benefits and the aspects of the national eHealth Strategy, including a talk about assistive technologies for people suffering from dementia, as well as a first-person account from another speak of how ICT brought palpable benefits to an older, but still active person. The event managed to attract an audience from different backgrounds, including representatives of the education and healthcare sectors, social welfare, people from the ICT industry and the government. One of the most recent steps along the digital path was made in September this year, during an event hosted at the Microsoft Innovation Centre. This event, which is one in a series of actions called Tech4Good, is organised by Microsoft Malta to address Maltese NGOs in order assist them with, and expose them to technology, which can provide benefits and efficiencies to their daily work, especially when it comes to social inclusion. This has been an ongoing effort by Microsoft in assisting and collaborating with Maltese NGOs for a number of years, aiding them in mastering the digital age to address the needs of the various communities. The foaming wave of the digital age has crashed against the shores of Malta and found its way into our winding streets and open homes. Young children are growing up in it and many of the older generation have embraced it. The promise of free information, social wellbeing and inclusion, and a wide variety of entertainment has been welcomed by many on the Maltese islands.

TA L K O F T H E T O W N With so many cities, towns and villages on our little Islands, it’s hard to decide what to see and where to go. Throughout the year we’ll be highlighting our top locations for the season. This month it's Mdina.
S T PAU L’ S C AT H E D R A L Designed by the renowned Lorenzo Gafà, this 17th century cathedral is a Baroque masterpiece. St Paul’s Cathedral is flanked by two bell towers and evokes an aura of awe and aspiration with the flamboyant façade. Built in honour of Malta’s patron saint and visited by locals and tourists alike due to its exceptional works of art.
ARCHITEC TURE The architecture in Mdina dates back to the time of the Muslim influence in Malta. A time that gave Malta a rich sense of architecture, mainly kept within the walls of the then capital but influential nonetheless. Arabic architecture can be noted in the pointed arches found in gateways as well as in the narrow streets in the Silent City.
VIEWPOINT Being the highest point in Malta, Mdina boasts spectacular views that will take your breath away in an instant. A walk to the bastion viewpoint will give you a splendid panoramic view of Malta, Mosta Dome being the most notable spot to notice from that height. A must-see for locals and visitors alike.
PALAZZO SANTA SOFIA Palazzo Santa Sofia is a palace in Mdina situated right across the cathedral. It is said to be the oldest surviving building in the city with the ground floor dating back to 1233. Built around a central courtyard, this luxurious palazzo is an iconic Maltese feature.
HOWARD GARDENS Howard Gardens are one of Malta’s biggest public gardens which naturally form a border between Rabat and Mdina. The ditch that surrounds the fortified city was intended to impede invaders from entering. An excellent spot to stroll through after a visit to Mdina and just as fitting for a quick drink amidst the trees and singing birds.

ISL AND HIGHLIGHTS Despite its diminutive size, the Maltese archipelago is bursting with historic sites, idyllic spots, culture and tradition. The Maltese Islands are like nowhere else. Here you’ll find fossil-studded geo formations, prehistoric temples, intriguing diving opportunities, and a richly woven history of remarkable intensity. Here’s a handy guide on what to look out for during your stay.
VALLETTA , MALTA Colloquially known as Il-Belt, Valletta is the capital city of Malta that was built during the rule of the Knights of St John. The baroque city is speckled with neo-classical and modern architecture and has been declared Europe’s Culture Capital 2018.
THE RED TOWER, MELLIEĦA , MALTA Fort St Agatha, more commonly known as The Red Tower due to its brightly coloured walls, was built in the middle of the 17th century and served as a bastion watchtower in its day. It is also the sixth addition to the Lascaris towers.
ĊITTADELL A , GOZO This small fortified city is also known as the Citadel and can be found in the heart of Victoria in Gozo. With all its fortifications, including the medieval epicentre intact, this historic area hosts a number of prime locations which are a must-see on your Gozo trip.
MDINA , MALTA Formerly known as Città Notabile, this fortified medieval beauty served as the island’s capital until 1530. Known as the Silent City since its streets are mainly used by pedestrians, the narrow streets give an interesting mix of baroque and Norman architecture – some of which are private homes till today.
PACEVILLE, ST JULIAN’S, MALTA Swarming with clubs and bars, Paceville is the party area that will have you dancing till the early hours of the morning. If you’d rather a more relaxed evening, then a pub or restaurant in the area could even hit the spot.

HOT SPOT
Valletta Waterfront
THE HISTORIC DESTINATION WITH THE COLOURED DOORS
The Valletta Waterfront combines food, retail and entertainment within a maritime hub, which for the past years has proved to be a highly popular destination. The small chapel of the Flight to Egypt by the Holy Family further creates a unique ‘village’ ambience. For those in search of a relaxing time with good food and entertainment, the Valletta Waterfront’s many restaurants and bars present a variety of offerings catering to different tastes, with dining right at the water’s edge. The establishments’ indoor dining areas are situated inside the tastefully refurbished, historical stores, originally constructed by Grand Master Pinto in 1752. Today, ushering in a modern era, the iconic doors have been revived with an artistic impression of colour, representing the storage of goods from days past: blue for fish, green for produce, yellow for wheat and red for wine.
An exquisite place at any time of the day - relax with a coffee in the morning watching the small boats bobbing along, occasionally the bigger cruise ships with their bustling activity; a bite to eat at lunchtime; or a lovely meal of whatever takes your fancy at sundown, with magnificent views of the historic Grand Harbour. Browse the shopping outlets for interesting gifts including local trinkets – from ceramics, mouth-blown glass, jewellery, to that book you’ve been meaning to buy and more. Meanwhile little guests can enjoy free activities including: balloon modelling, face painting, crafts, games, colouringins, meet & greets with all-time favourite characters, puppet shows, bouncy castles and more, every Saturday evening (19.30hrs onwards) and Sunday afternoons (12.30hrs onwards).
ARRIVING TO THE VALLETTA WATERFRONT DESTINATION • Valletta circular bus (133) from the main bus terminal. • Valletta Waterfront features on most hop-on hop-off buses’ routes. You will be dropped off a few metres away. • The Upper Barrakka panoramic lift. It is also possible to combine the ticket for the lift with the ferry crossing across the Grand Harbour to or from The Three Cities. • Electric cabs are available from just outside Valletta. • Taxis to the Valletta Waterfront are available to and from your accommodation. • Parking is also convenient. One may park on the quays starting from €3.00, in the Atrium parking located in the middle of the promenade, or free of charge on the road itself. • Berthing space for your boat is available at Laguna Marina on request.

ged beef, vintage wines, barrel matured rum, grappa and whisky, and a view which dates back to the latter half of the 16 th century, are just some of the ingredients which make The Chophouse a favourite restaurant with locals and foreigners alike. Fresh local ingredients, magical combinations of herbs and spices and a young, motivated team of chefs and waiters complete the picture to make The Chophouse so special. Perched above Sliema Creek, a few hundred metres across the sheltered harbour high up on a steep sided peninsula rises Malta’s Capital, Valletta; a city built by gentlemen for gentlemen, in the words of Grand Master Jean
Parisot de Valette, the victorious founder of the city after whom it is named. The Valletta skyline with its flat roofed houses, domed churches and rising steeples inspires an aura of interest and intrigue; at sunset it is seducing, at night time magical, mysterious. Nowhere offers a better view, or more comfortable setting than the terrace at The Chophouse and many of its visitors have been lured there after enjoying their dinner there. As one would imagine the restaurant specialises in meats, predominantly beef. The best possible cuts from the finest breeds of cattle are on offer and these include Grade 5 Wagyu, USDA, Argentinian Angus and Scottona from northern Italy. A number of joints are regularly aged for anything up to three
months in purpose-built cabinets. Dry aging enhances both the flavour and the tenderness of the meat. Grilled over Malta’s largest all-charcoal grill patrons can choose from a Chateaubriand to share, sirloin, ribeye, flap, picanha and flank. Succulent Maltese pork, flavourful lamb, and a truly delicious slow-cooked rabbit belly are other dishes on offer. South African Chef Marc Coetzee and his brigade of Maltese, Italian, Spanish and Moroccan chefs do some spectacular starters and sweets, all created and prepared in-house. Nobody goes thirsty either at The Chophouse. Sommelier Jamie Christie proudly shows interested patrons into the climatised glass cave and helps them choose their own wine from

Literally Connected LITERARY FIGURES IN MALTA WORDS BY Mark Debono

raipsing through the Peruvian jungle, the print on the t-shirt hit me like a canoe oar to the face. ‘Corto Maltes’, it proclaimed, the name of a nearby jungle lodge. Even with 10,000 kilometres of distance, it seems I could not escape some connections, and this set me thinking - what literary figures are connected to Malta, and how? Corto Maltese is an Italian adventure comics series, created by Hugo Pratt in 1967, and featuring a sea captain who was born in Valletta on July 10, 1887, and who apart from
his name and birthplace, has no further connection to the island whatsoever. Not so, however, many other authors or literary figures. Considered one of Scotland’s greatest writers, Sir Walter Scott came to Malta on doctor’s orders. He only spent three weeks here before moving on to Naples, but was so inspired by the island that he wrote the novel The Siege of Malta. Sadly, Scott’s visit to our warmer climes did him little good and he passed away in

almost see things grow and the population is, I suppose, unexampled.” As to the Maltese, he wrote: “The Maltese are a dark, light-limbed people [...] They are the noisiest race under heaven, and Valetta (sic) the noisiest place.” And yet, upon Ball’s death in 1809, Coleridge wrote that his time on the island was “in many respects the most memorable and instructive period of my life”, so perhaps his opinion did change after all. Yet others disliked Malta; famously, the British poet Lord Byron hated Valletta’s steps such that on his return to England in July 1811, he wrote, “Adieu, ye cursed street of stairs, how surely he who mounts you swears”. 1832, one year after completing the book. Sir Walter sent the draft of the manuscript to his publisher before, but his deteriorating health had taken a toll on his literary abilities and the publishers decided not to release Sir Walter’s work. The novel was only published in 2008, almost 200 years after his death.
One of the most well-thumbed books you’ll find anywhere in Malta will be copies of Nicholas Monsarrat’s 1973 novel The Kappillan of Malta, and yet, the connection here is far greater than simply being the story of a place and a priest. In fact, Monsarrat and his wife moved to the island of Gozo in the late 60s, and upon his death in 1979, his wife stayed on in Gozo until 2009, whereupon she moved to Malta.
Edward Lear is another literary great to have visited Malta, on eight occasions in fact, though many were brief sojourns on the way elsewhere. Lear had very mixed feelings about Malta, and his stay between 1865-66 only seems to have confirmed his first impressions, which he expressed in a letter, saying, “Malta itself, is an island all over rock and sand and a little soil, and crammed in every crevice with people and houses. [...] Such a strange place as Valetta [sic] I certainly never did see _ and as a town it is perhaps as beautiful as any existing”.
Danish writer Dan Turèll’s favourite holiday resort was Malta, and it was here that he got the inspiration for Volume 3 in his Mord-serie (English: Murder Series). In Malta, Turèll stayed in bungalow No 107 of the Mellieħa Holiday Centre, a Danish holiday park built in 1979. The book that resulted, Mord på Malta, won Turèll the prestigious Poe Klubbens Golden Handcuffs prize for the year’s best crime novel in 1985.
Sharp-eyed visitors to Valletta might have noticed a plaque commemorating Samuel Taylor Coleridge on the edifice of the Casino Maltese in Republic Street. In 1804, Coleridge came to Malta, hoping that the warmer climate would aid his health, as well as to end his addiction to opium. Alexander Ball, then Governor of Malta, encouraged Coleridge to write propaganda about British trade routes, and eventually Coleridge was promoted to the position of Public Secretary. This still did not aid the poet’s impression of Malta and the Maltese, writing as he did to his wife in June 1804, “The whole island looks like one monstrous fortification. Nothing green meets your eye. [...] Yet the fertility is marvellous. You
A little known fact about Christopher Hitchens, the militant atheist and fantastic prose writer, is that he was born, and spent much of his childhood here, in Malta. His memoirs, Hitch 22, describes Hitchens “standing on a ferry-boat that is crossing a lovely harbour”, Valletta’s Grand Harbour, before continuing that “it’s as good an inaugural memory as one could wish." Hitchens describes Valletta as “one of the finest Baroque and Renaissance cities of Europe”, and his summary of Malta is among the most poignant, truthful, and beautiful I have ever read, stating that the island is, “a jewel set in the sea between Sicily and Libya, it has been for centuries a place of the twoedged sword between the Christian and Muslim worlds. If you happen to attend a Maltese Catholic church during Mass, you will see the priest raising the Communion Host and calling on “Allah,” because this after all is the local word for “god.” My first memory, in other words, is of a ragged and jagged, but nonetheless permeable and charming, frontier between two cultures and civilisations.” And culture clash crowns the last of our literary encounters with Malta. Anthony Burgess, of Clockwork Orange fame, found that he was not welcome here. “We were impressed with several things in Malta,” he wrote in his 1990 memoirs. “The Caravaggios, the baroque architecture, the blue clean waters, and the language.” Burgess stayed here between 1968 and 1970, but found it difficult to work as a reviewer, since the General Post Office and Customs frequently withheld books posted to him on censorship grounds. A lecture about pornography entitled ‘Obscenity and the Arts’, which he delivered to around 1,000 attendees at the Malta University, infuriated the Maltese Church to the point that authorities had seized his house. According to Burgess’ autobiography, due to the publicity, the house was “speedily deconfiscated, but neither its sale nor its lease was permitted.” The author never returned to No 168, Main Street, Lija, and passed away in 1993, in London.

THE DEVOTED NUN WORDS BY TCD
I
n the heart of the old capital, on the third floor of the ancient building, the crystal chandelier began to shake uncontrollably causing Sister Charlotte to wake up from her deep slumber, jump out of bed and land face down on the hard floor. Her first thought was how she wished she had ordered that white fluffy rug from her last online shopping spree. That would have softened the blow a little. Her next thought however was… “EARTHQUAKE,” she shouted in her deep, husky voice, warning her house mates whilst running for safety. Little did she know that Sister Marguerite, the youngest of the group, had asked the devoted decorator over to help move her bed to the other side of the room. The only natural light in her cell was from a tiny window a few centimetres below the ceiling and she wanted to position her bed right opposite it so that she could wake up and see the sky every morning. Her room, of course, is right above Sister Charlotte’s, hence the commotion in her bedroom. You see, Sister Charlotte was not the wisest owl in the parliament, nor was she the youngest. Having lived in the nunnery for the past 67 years, she had seen her fair share of strange things but Sister Marguerite was, by far, the strangest. It’s safe to say that, no matter how holy and devoted they both were, they had it in for each other from the start. Sister Marguerite was a pretty, young thing. Her long blonde locks and French bloodline made her look more like a movie star than a nun. This, for some reason, made Sister Charlotte, who resembled a
character out of a Roald Dahl novel, quite irritable. The first time they had met was just a few years ago, Mother Superior introduced Sister Charlotte as ‘the one who thinks she knows everything’ which made Sister Marguerite giggle in a childish way, which in turn made Sister Charlotte see red. Ever since then, she’s had nothing good to say about her.
As she hit the ground floor of the convent and marched out to the cloister, she felt as if she were being watched As she made her way to the cloister, where all the nuns would gather each morning for prayer, she noticed the decorator leaving Sister Marguerite’s room which she instantly thought was strange. The decorator should always be accompanied by Mother Superior, and she was nowhere in sight. Sister Charlotte confronted the decorator who replied with a shrug and a little smirk, making the holy woman furious but also intrigued. “What had he been doing in Sister Marguerite’s boudoir?” she said to no one in particular as she continued on walking. Sister Charlotte is not one to gossip but she did like to hear it. She quickened her pace, ready for some tittle-tattle when lo and behold she bumped into the handsome doctor who only came to the convent when the nuns were truly ill.
Dr Falzon was on his way to Mother Superior’s room, who, just the day before, looked as bright as a button. So why had she needed the doctor? ‘Something’s up,’ she thought. She sprinted towards the prayer meeting and arrived flushed and out of breath. Excited to tell the others, and curious as to what they would say. As she hit the ground floor of the convent and marched out to the cloister, she felt as if she were being watched. And she was, by ten of her Catholic comrades who all seemed to be gossiping already. As she moved in closer, the ten holy women stopped, looked straight at her and giggled. She thought best to confront them and find out how she had become the butt of the joke. She learnt that Mother Superior had set her up, as she had done to most of the other devoted ladies in the convent. It was a way for her to make sure that the chosen one was still on the righteous path. A test of temptation, let’s say. Sister Charlotte had, ultimately, passed the test but not before being ridiculed in front of everyone. Mother Superior blurted out that she’d read Sister Charlotte’s diary earlier on in the week and also pointed out that Sister Charlotte was not as godly as she made out to be. As she crawled back to her chamber, with tears in her eyes, she pledged to never interfere in other people’s lives again. And to make sure, she put a new lock on her door although that would be a job for the handy man.

THE APS MDINA CATHEDRAL CONTEMPORARY ART BIENNALE WORDS BY Nikki Petroni
T
he APS Mdina Cathedral Contemporary Art Biennale, open from 13 November of this year until 7 January, 2018, is once again at the forefront of discussing the dialogue between classical and contemporary art. Held within the medieval-cum-baroque precincts of Malta’s oldest capital city, this year’s edition will reinterpret the last edition’s success by focusing solely on one single space – the Cathedral Museum and its magnificent baroque halls. The museum, famed for housing artworks, architectural fragments and curios, is a space that reflects the Maltese identity as well, and thus contemplates this year’s theme: The Mediterranean: A Sea of Conflicting Spiritualities, succinctly. Different to the previous 2015 edition is the decision to use one sole space: the Cathedral Museum. In this way, the exploration of the past and the present, the insular and the cosmopolitan, as well as the negative and the positive can be performed within an enclosed space, familiar, adored and enchanted by centuries of history. The theme, as stated above, will once again incorporate the ideals of the spirit, the cerebral and the ephemeral, a stark contrast to the robust nature of Mdina’s walls. Paradoxically, in a world full of conflict and division, divergence unites us all.
02.
03.
While the Cathedral Museum is a repository for paintings, sculptures, drawings and artefacts of the decorative arts, it also functions as a part of the Cathedral’s compound. The extant collection derives from the 1897 collection housed within adjacent halls to the Cathedral before it was moved to the seminary in 1969, where the collection still remains to this date. The dual relationship of the museum as an art space, as well as a functioning building, comes to the fore within the layout. While dormitories as such do not exist any more, an example of its past function as a prelate seminary is the chapel dedicated to the Annunciation located on the first floor. The Mdina Biennale started as an exhibition of solely Catholic and religious art. The immensity of the contemporary world was somewhat ignored in favour of the personalised taste of a local few, in an attempt to always safeguard the status quo. This 2015-16 exhibition helped awaken the need for a new contemporary space to welcome both local and international artists. The past has seen great strides in the rejoicement of contemporary art, with several spaces or exhibitions being set up, and with Malta’s recent entry in the Venice Biennale after a long hiatus.
84
THE ARTS
04.
Nonetheless, it is this aspect of one-offs that brings peril to the contemporary scene in Malta. The need for continuity, remembrance and vitalisation is at the core of the Mdina Biennale.
Esprit Barthet are the chosen artists of this year’s exhibition. As a prelude to the main event, an exhibition of nude figure drawings by the Maltese twentieth-century artist and designer Giuseppe Galea, was held between 7 and 31 October.
Within the remits of the Mdina Biennale, this space was transformed from just being a sphere of sanctimonious sentiment to encompass the spirit of the new age, through the exhibition of local and foreign contemporary artists. Artists from Malta, Italy, UK, US, Germany, France, Jordan, Israel, Poland, Lithuania, Georgia, Latvia, Greece, Australia, Portugal, Serbia, Russia, Austria and Lebanon will be participating.
The APS Mdina Cathedral Contemporary Art Biennale is once again under the artistic direction of Dr Giuseppe Schembri Bonaci with a curatorial team led by Nikki Petroni, assisted by Melanie Erixon, Alexandra Camilleri, Audrey Rose Mizzi, Emma Borg, Naomi Bajada Young, Clint Calleja, Noel Attard and Giulia Xuereb. The exhibition endeavours to bring out the past with the marriage of the present and future. It is this duality, of both idea and space, which allows the APS Mdina Biennale to take ownership of a new style of curatorship, dialogue and commemoration.
Each artist has been assigned a particular space within the museum and will be developing projects that respond to its permanent collection and this year’s subject. Once again, an exhibit dedicated to Maltese modern artists will hang alongside medieval, baroque and contemporary artworks, bridging different eras and art historical periods by focusing on the overlapping nature of art across time. MALTA:
A REMOTE GAMING DESTINATION In recent years, Malta has established itself as a European hub for remote gaming. With today’s well- regulated and reputable European jurisdiction within the industry, Malta is booming on a global level. In addition, Malta’s favourable tax regimes and attractive license costs make our islands a destination of choice amongst several of the largest gaming operators in the industry. Driven by the wholehearted commitment to promote responsible gaming, and ensure the protection of the player, Malta’s legislation has been drafted with both players’ and operators’ interest in mind. In line with Malta’s aim to reassert its positioning at the forefront of remote gaming jurisdictions, the National Strategy on Digital Gaming came into existence in 2012. This document re-establishes Malta’s strategic
focus, and offers a variety of opportunities to Maltese companies focusing on remote gaming initiatives. Key benefits include financing, taxcredits, as well as co-financing possibilities. Over the years, the industry has reshaped itself and is now poised to take on the next level. November welcomes several delegates, operators, suppliers and affiliates to our shores to engage in some of the largest gaming events of the year with SiGMA as the main highlight. Its soaring success has broadened the iGaming horizon on a local level, allowing for increased knowledge and opportunities within the industry. If you happen to be visiting our Islands for any of the above reasons, we welcome you and invite you to peruse through our catalogue of service providers and operators to get a head start and take the opportunity to skyrocket your career.

SiGMA
A THIRST FOR TALENT SiGM A 2017
I
“
WORDS BY Kristina Cassar Dowling
’m just an events guy.” This is what Eman Pulis, founder and CEO of SiGMA, had to say about himself. An understatement that needs to be noted.
After three years of creating the iGaming Village – a haven for iGaming operators to meet affiliates, vendors to meet operators, VCs to meet startups and for graduates and IT developers to "land the best job" that recognises their skillsand gives them the opportunity to develop their talents in Malta’s booming industry. This is what Eman deciphers as an event but what I classify as a golden opportunity. Eman has set his mind on a task, found a niche market within a booming sector and made it accessible to the talented individuals ready to make their stamp in the industry and give their career a boost. It all boils down to SiGMA – the biggest expo show in the industry that hits the jackpot for employers and employees alike. This year, SiGMA will take place at the Malta Fairs and Convention Centre (MFCC) on the outskirts of Mdina. The event will dominate the entirety of the MFCC, a colossal venue that will serve as a playground for the biggest names in Casino, Gaming and e-Summits. The highlight of the event will be the SiGMA Careers Convention where individuals interested in joining the iGaming world can get in contact with Malta’s leading companies and embark on a journey that could entirely transform their working life. Speaking to Eman was inspiring, he spoke about the industry in a way that will have anyone who’s not involved in this sector seriously question their work choices and have all those in the industry nod their heads, give a cheeky smile and think of the greatness that is their job. The sound of success paired with the soaring aroma of coffee makes for a booming work environment where serious work and bucket-loads of fun practically make your week. We all know the benefits of working in Gaming but hearing this melody straight from the horse’s mouth simply re-assures you that the perks are not myths but pure fact.
Eman spoke proudly of the industry in general but some things stood out for him. First on his list was the easy-going environment where employees of different cultures meet to create mind-boggling campaigns and form a dynamic and effective work force. Team work is another thing that Eman highlighted as a positive in the industry. Working together to achieve goals is always a motivator but if that’s not enough then the wage and benefits will surely keep your spirits high. Eman reassured me that moving up the career ladder is swift and frequent in most companies, his advice – ‘show them what you’re made of and you’ll get there.’ This is not said in flattery but can be achieved when hard work and devotion are apparent. If this sounds like your cup of tea, then the SiGMA Careers Convention could make your dreams come true. Held on November 24 from 14:00 – 18:00 at the MFCC, this afternoon will give you a first-hand experience of the industry and all the opportunities it has to offer. With all the leading names in the industry huddled in one venue, thirsty for talent, this event can give you the head-start into a new career where hard work really pays off. sigma.com.mt

MALTA:
A READER’S PARADISE WORDS BY
Diane Brincat
F
licking through this magazine, you may think that a typical day in Malta must involve a copious amount of eating, hours spent lazing around at the beach, and heavy beats drumming in your ears at Malta’s hottest clubs. With near constant sunshine and round-the-clock events to keep you busy, life on the Maltese islands doesn’t always afford readers the luxury of simply kicking back with a good book for a couple of hours. But as the winter routine kicks in, Maltese life becomes more about winding down and indulging in some me-time. For those of you who love to read, Malta offers some fantastic spots that will give you the perfect portal for escape - and if you’ve already finished the book you bought from the departures lounge, there are plenty of bookshops where you can pick up your next read. ADDING TO YOUR TO-BE-READ PILE As a bilingual country where Maltese and English are widely spoken, local bookshops offer books and magazines in both languages _though the selection of books published in Maltese is not quite as large as what’s available in English. While Malta’s publishing industry is thriving, it is quite a niche area and is often overshadowed by imported titles. Whether you’re looking for the latest bestselling autobiography or a light beach read, local bookshops are well-stocked, and mass market titles actually take up most of the shelf space. If you’re after a specific title, you may be better off visiting some larger bookshops in Sliema and Valletta, which carry a more extensive list of titles. If you’d like to read Malta-centric books, make sure to check out the Melitensia section, where you’re sure to find a treasure trove of nonfiction books about Maltese heritage and culture. If fiction suits your tastes better, be forewarned that although the selection may be limited, any read you choose will be worthwhile. WHERE TO GET THEM FROM? For a country that is not best known for its interest in reading, books are readily available for sale in Malta. Whether you’re at a bookshop, a supermarket, or the local stationery, you’re bound to find something that may tickle your fancy. However, there are a number
of bookshops in the vicinity of St Julian’s, Sliema, and Valletta that offer a much larger selection than your average bookshop. If you prefer to borrow rather than buy, the Central Public Library in Floriana is just a stone’s throw away from Valletta. GREAT SPOTS TO READ IN There’s nothing better than enjoying your latest read in beautiful and unique surroundings - luckily, the Maltese islands offer a number of idyllic spots where you can kick back and indulge. Seaside options are evidently endless, though one must think about finding a reader-friendly setting where the wind isn’t too strong and the promenade isn’t too busy. If you’d just like to get out of your hotel and sit somewhere close by, we wager that the seafronts in Sliema, Buġibba, and Marsascala are suitable options. If greenery is what you’re after, Valletta hosts a number of lovely gardens at the Upper Barrakka and Hastings. If you’re staying someplace central, then you’re guaranteed a quiet and peaceful setting at the picturesque San Anton Gardens in Attard. For those of you who prefer to stay indoors, Maltese cafés are the perfect hideaway. Usually fairly quiet in the morning and after lunchtime, you’ll be spoilt for choice to pick just one place where to enjoy your book with a steaming cuppa. BOOK LOVERS ARE IN FOR A TREAT THIS NOVEMBER The Malta Book Festival gives authors, publishers, and book retailers alike the opportunity to showcase their work at this annual event. Guests can expect an exciting programme that will include book launches, book presentations, poetry readings, meet and greets with authors, as well as seminars. The Festival will be held between 8 and 12 November at the Mediterranean Conference Centre, one of Malta’s most renowned and beautiful historic buildings, which was previously used as the Sacra Infermeria of the Knights of St John.

AIR MALTA SUPPORTS THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION
A
ir Malta has recently assisted the Royal British Legion by carrying a shipment of red poppies and other memorabilia on board one of their operating aircraft from London to Malta. This was made possible thanks to the sponsorship by Network Airline Services being the Total Cargo Management service provider for Air Malta. The red poppy has become a symbol of war remembrance the world over. The remembrance poppy has been used since 1920 and people from all walks of life wear the poppy to remember those who died in war or who still serve. In many countries, the poppy is worn around Armistice Day on the 11th November. Mr. Colin Pilling, Secretary RBL Malta and Poppy coordinator commented; “Last year due to your help we raised a total of €29,000 towards the relief and welfare of Maltese and British ex-service men and women, this was of great help and comfort to these veterans and their families.” The Royal British Legion helps the whole Armed Forces community through welfare, companionship and representation as well as being the Nation's custodian of Remembrance. Furthermore, it supports all current and former British military personnel by distributing small artificial red poppies in return for donations to their ‘Poppy Appeal’. “We are delighted to support causes such as the Poppy Appeal, which help raise awareness and funds for people who
have sacrificed so much”, said John Vella, Air Malta’s Head of Cargo Sales & Marketing. This campaign forms part of Air Malta’s Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives whereby the airline supports organisations that work hard in the community. As Malta’s national carrier the airline is the only airline flying from Malta that fully supports the local community in all possible ways and every year it carries an increasing number of medical cases, including stretcher and incubator cases for treatment abroad. No other airline operating to Malta provides continued support to voluntary and nongovernmental organisations like Air Malta.

I have been employed with Air Malta for the past 24 years. Before moving to the Commercial Department I worked in the Finance and Human Resources Departments.

Interesting, challenging, fun. WHAT IS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE OF YOUR JOB?
Trying to find the best confirmed duty travel itinerary in a short time and when flights are full. DO YOU HAVE ANY HOBBIES?
I love travelling and my dream is to visit as many places in the world as I can. I also enjoy reading. After participating in the walkathon earlier this this year, I took up running which I’m really enjoying so far. WHICH IS YOUR FAVOURITE DESTINATION AND WHY?

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE SPOTS OR TIPS FOR ANYONE VISITING MALTA?
Despite its small size, Malta has so much to offer. It is a treasure throve for history enthusiasts. Sea lovers and divers can reach any of our beautiful beaches in a relatively short time. Added to this, being blessed with sunshine nearly all year round makes Malta a destination which can be enjoyed by the whole family. My favourite spot in Malta would have to be Mdina, Malta’s old capital city, also known as the ‘Silent City’ with its narrow, winding streets, fortifications and world-renowned cathedral. A short boat ride away is Malta’s sister island of Gozo which is definitely a must on any itinerary.

But once you are reading this article, Air Malta‘s Flight Safety Committee is confident that you are a law-abiding and exemplary passenger. Indeed, the cabin crew may need your assistance to restrain another passenger in the unlikely event that he or she may act irresponsibly during the flight. The consumption of one’s own alcoholic beverages inflight goes against Air Malta policy.
Smoking is prohibited from when you leave the terminal building until you arrive to the terminal building. Smoking is allowed in designated areas only. Smoking is not allowed during any phase of the flight and in any area of the aircraft. Should you be aware of a passenger who has smoked in the toilet during the flight, please inform the cabin crew immediately so that they can check for any undetected fires. USE OF PORTABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICES ON BOARD TRANSMITTING PORTABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICES (PEDS)
NON-TRANSMITTING PORTABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICES (PEDS)
Any devices that can send or receive data by wireless means, such as mobile-phones and tablets, may be used during all phases of the flight provided their transmit/receive capabilities (e.g. Bluetooth and Wi-fi) are switched off. Alternatively, if the device has ‘Flight Mode’ capability, this must be enabled. Such devices shall be safely secured in the customers’ hand (handheld) or a pocket during taxi, take-off and landing. Larger devices (e.g. laptops) shall be switched off and stowed away safely during taxi, takeoff and landing. Accessories, such as headphones, must not obstruct access to the aisle. If the data transmission capability cannot be switched off (whilst the device is operating), the device itself must be switched off for the duration of the flight.
These could include, but are not limited to, items such as DVD players, electronic games, music players and personal cameras. Such devices shall be safely secured in the customers’ hand (handheld) or a pocket during taxi, take-off and landing. Larger devices shall be stowed away safely during taxi, take-off and landing.
L APTOPS AND NOTEBOOKS Such devices may be used during boarding and during flight but not during taxi, take-off and landing. Any built-in data connectivity such as Bluetooth or Wi-Fi must be disabled. These devices must be stowed away safely during taxi, take-off and landing since they could hinder an emergency evacuation.
ARE THERE TIMES WHEN I CANNOT USE MY ELECTRONIC DEVICES?
CAN I USE HEADPHONES? Personal headphones can be used during all phases of the flight. However, we ask you to remove your headphones during the safety briefing. For safety reasons, customers sitting in an emergency exit row must refrain from using headphones during taxi, take-off and landing.
Under certain circumstances, your Flight Crew or Cabin Crew may ask you to switch off all Personal Electronic Devices. This may happen during automatic landings, low visibility takeoff or landing, or during emergency situations.
I SHOULD INFORM THE CABIN CREW WHEN … … portable electronic device is damaged, becomes hot, produces smoke, is lost, or falls into the seat structure. If safe to do so, the device must be switched off immediately.
If you require more information, please refer to the table below which includes a list of Personal Electronic Devices (PEDs) which can be used onboard Air Malta flights by phase of flight. Please do not hesitate to contact any member of our cabin crew if you have any further questions.
