the opportunity to help grow my region by motivating and supporting my team. Helping others to achieve their professional goals is one of the most rewarding parts of my work.”

The couple’s whirlwind romance moved at lightning speed as sparks flew. “Matt asked me on a date and I said I just wanted to be friends. Our ‘friend’ date was a week later. The friendship lasted one week as we both knew what we had was more than a friendship. A short three weeks after our first date, we moved in together and the happily ever after began,” says Dana. They were married on July 21, 2017.

Dana grew up in Pleasanton and moved to Danville six years ago. She is the Founder and skincare junkie of Healthy Lotus, a CBDinfused Wholesale skin care line, based in Danville. She also works as a medical device rep dividing her time between her passion and an industry she finds much joy in being a part of. “My drive and desire for starting a business in the health and well-being industry came to fruition in May 2016. I had always dreamed of maximizing human potential through skincare, which led me to discover the therapeutic benefits of CBD. I’ve made it my mission to spread the love of my CBD-infused products into spas, salons, golf courses, boutiques and chiropractic offices,” says Dana.

Matt grew up in Danville and moved to Blackhawk when he was 16-years-old. He has been involved in the mortgage business for 22 years and currently works as a regional, multi-state manager for Homebridge Financial. He says he feels lucky to find a career he loves, “I really enjoy

Something most people don’t know about Matt is that he is a former model. He missed the majority of his high school years due to modeling work in San Francisco and Los Angeles. You can find him featured in various print and commercial modeling work. While Matt was busy modeling during

The former child model and former rodeo queen met briefly 24 years ago and then reconnected in the fall of 2015. “We met up again in downtown Danville four years ago. After several spirits and running into each other in the romantic ambiance of Menars, we locked eyes and the rest is history,” says Dana.

his high school years, Dana was active in junior rodeo and holds the title of former Miss Rowell Ranch Rodeo Queen. An active lifestyle is important to both Matt and Dana. “Our hobbies involve working out golf, bocce, hiking and keeping our minds curious with lots of Podcasts and reading. Also, we have been involved with the Contra Costa Sheriff Posse and Charities for the last 30 years. Keeping our communities safe and giving back to people in need is very important to us,” shares Matt. When the couple wants to get away and disconnect from the world, they enjoy exploring the beautiful California scenery. “In May we took our first trip to Yosemite and stayed at Rush Creek Inn, one mile outside of the park. No TV’s and very little cell reception, a perfect place to completely detach and unwind. Inspired by the movie Free Solo, and our new interest in hiking, we experienced all the unbelievable views Yosemite had to offer. We even set out on our longest hike ever, 14 miles! For those that know Matt, he is traditionally not the ‘outdoors’ kind of guy, unless it involves a set of golf clubs! He even allowed his shoes to get dirty,” says Dana. AUGUST 2019

It was a love of golf and all the fun events that came with being longtime Blackhawk Country Club members that made Matt and Dana decide to move to the community. “Matt is a long time golf member, and I’m also an avid golfer. We found we were spending a majority of our time in Blackhawk for bocce and other events, so we decided to move here almost two years ago. We love the peacefulness and beauty of the community, the friendliness of our neighbors and how active people are walking their dogs, biking and golfing,” says Dana.

Patriots Day

is how our community can support our Veterans and Fallen Heroes By Jerry Nowicki, Resident Since 1987

A blinded veteran knows his community cares.

T

he fight against terrorism stills rages on and continues to take a heavy toll on our military and their families. Improvements have been made in the care of our wounded veterans and those suffering long after the battle with PSDT, however, government agencies cannot do the job alone. The burden continues to fall on the many volunteer organizations in communities like ours to fill the gap and lend support to the military, both active and those separated by injuries sustained on the battlefield. Veteran suicides are still on the rise, and many deaths are attributed to them feeling alone in their struggles. Patriots Day was started in our community in 2011 and continues to be a vital force in supporting the veterans of the bay area who

are in need. Through the generosity of our community we have raised just over one half of a million dollars in the past eight years to support our local veteran’s charities.

Care packages in the combat zones mean a lot.

This year’s Patriots weekend will be on the 14th and 15th of September. Once again collections of your pledge cards and cash will be most welcomed and greatly appreciated by our local charities who depend on your generous support each year so that they can help our local veterans and families in need of help. The program is chaired by Norm Prickett and Jerry Nowicki with the support of both the Blackhawk HOA and the Blackhawk Country Club and volunteers from the Senior Golf association . The funds raised go to support three local veterans’ charities: PGA Hope is a project that was founded by the PGA. The program is aimed at the rehabilitation of veterans with physical and mental disabilities to enhance their physical, mental, social and emotional well-being through golf. Operation Care and Comfort is dedicated to providing care for the troops and families deployed in combat zones and when they return. They adopt veterans from our bay area and have developed a unique care package program containing needed and requested items. They also work with the sports and entertainment venues as well as season ticket holders so that veterans and their families can attend for free. Troops Direct is a charity started by a member of our Blackhawk family and is focused on delivering mission critical items to our troops to aid them in achieving success on the battlefield. The reality is that despite the best efforts of our military, often our troops come up short on what they need and Troops Direct fills that gap. It has probably saved precious lives in the process.

“I love Chateau Whistler Golf Club,” say first-time golfers to British Columbia, “the forest, the mountains, the course - they are gorgeous.” We couldn’t agree more. The environment is spectacular. Situated as an adjunct to the magnificent Fairmont Chateau Whistler hotel, the Chateau Whistler Golf Club provides a fabulous golf experience. 2018 was the 25th anniversary and the architect, Robert Trent Jones, returned to one of his most celebrated creations. During the colder weather it’s a popular ski-in ski-out resort. During the temperate weather, it’s a golf resort with a balance of beauty, serenity and adventure. Snow-capped mountains and thick towering Douglas fir trees project a backdrop of spectacular beauty. Hear the roar of the rushing stream, reminding us of our bucolic mountain location. Mortgage Equity Into Cash By Steve Cline, Preferred Financial

A

s you may have heard, interest rates have recently and significantly dipped. If there is ever a “right time” to cash-out equity, it would be when interest rates are at or near all-time lows. Given the new tax laws, restricting deductibility of Home Equity Lines of Credit, a cash-out refinance may be the best avenue to obtain needed funds. Although I do not generally advocate that our clients cash out equity from their homes to pay off debt, I am also a realist and recognize that there are some situations that may warrant its consideration, such as for: • • •

Future home improvements College costs (future/current) Debt consolidation (credit card debt, auto loans, etc.)

Even if your current mortgage rate is below market, it’s worth investigating what new cash-out interest rates are available for your specific scenario. The answer may (pleasantly) surprise you. Give me a call or email, and I will prepare something tailored to your situation.

Protect yourself with the right insurance and estate plan

The great majority of what passes for financial advice is directed at optimizing instead of drastic improvement. Any tip, hint, or singular transaction is a tweak on your financial situation and should be treated as such.

On the Road with The Blackhawk Chorus By Linda Kralik, Resident since 1984 Berkshire Hathaway/Drysdale Properties

T

his month I bring to you something completely outside the realm of real estate. It is a tribute to The Blackhawk Chorus, who just finished their 6th Chorus Tour with the sights of Boston, Philadelphia and Washington DC. The Blackhawk Chorus was established 27 years ago as a branch of Blackhawk Women. There were 12 brave ladies meeting at the home of the director and founder, Diane Gilfether. I was blessed to be one of those 12 original singers, and there are still 3 other original members to this day. As the Chorus grew. and men were incorporated into the mixed voices, it no longer was a part of Blackhawk Women and became a stand alone group. Over the years the Chorus would tackle more and more difficult pieces and would reach a semi-professional level of performance. It was then, in 2003 that it was decided to take our show “On the Road” with European Tours of Vienna, Salzburg and Prague. In 2005 we toured Italy and sang the noon mass at St. Peter’s Basilica, a thrill for this little farm girl!! In 2008 we covered most of Great Britain and Scotland singing at the Fringe Festival in Edinburgh and watched the Scottish Tattoo, another thrill of a lifetime. In 2011 another tour began with the celebration of the Queen’s Jubilee then took us to Wales and Ireland. 2015 found the group wandering the hills and coast land of Spain where we captivated audiences at every performance. So, this year the tour had an Americana flavor as we performed in Boston at Faneuil Hall, the meeting hall where the revolution over the Tea Tax began. From Boston we proceeded to Philadelphia where the meetings occurred in Independence Hall, which formed our government. The Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States were both signed here. And the Liberty Bell, which rang for our freedom, is preserved here as well. We had the pleasure of a dual concert with two local choir groups; one, a gospel choir from St. Thomas African Episcopal Church, established in 1792 as the first black church in America, and the second group was an all women’s chorus, The Buck’s County Women’s Chorus. These were two separate performances a few days apart. And finally, after a stop at the Gettysburg battlefield, where we stood as a group where President Lincoln gave his famous Gettysburg address, we completed our tour in Washington, D. C. It was a fabulous trip, enjoyed by all, revering our Founding Fathers in voice and song. 16

Pet Corner

The Lappin Family

is Committed to Saving Dogs By Janine Collins, Resident Since 1999

M

y daughter Claire and I were introduced to Tri-Valley Animal Rescue (TVAR) through National Charity League two years ago. We were helping at a Saturday adoption event at the pet food store and Claire discovered that if the puppies were not all adopted, they went home with a foster family. We reached out directly to Tri-Valley Animal Rescue and discovered there’s an unending need for foster families. In looking at the puppy, kitten, and dog foster programs, we determined we wanted to help rescue adult dogs from the East County Animal Shelter in Dublin (although we have fostered an older puppy or two).

Janine and Claire with their rescues Molly, Kevin, and TVAR foster dog, Johnny.

escaped, a Blackhawk resident stopped their golf cart and let him jump in, immediately reuniting us with him.

All the dogs we foster arrived in the shelter either surrendered or a stray. Tri-Valley Animal Our first TVAR foster Abby. Rescue not only helps dogs, but also puppies, cats, and kittens find their forever homes by matching families with Since our first foster Abby in September of 2017, we’ve helped the pet they’ve been searching for. It’s rewarding when we hear save 15 dogs by getting them out of the shelter while TVAR finds from the families about how happy they are with the animal they them a forever home. Blackhawk is a very dog friendly community adopted. If you are looking to adopt or would like to save the that is always ready to help us with our fosters. One time we had life of an animal with a rewarding foster experience, please visit a feisty little hound that would sit in the backyard, staring at the www.TVAR.org. If you prefer to volunteer administratively, you cows on the hill and plotting how to get to them. Once when he can also register on the website.

Child Drowning Prevention Tips Every Pool Owner Should Know By Jon Lubrano, President, Atlantis Pools Inc

A

home swimming pool brings a lot of joy to a household, but it is important to remember that drowning is a leading cause of death in children, and pool ownership comes with important safety responsibilities. The most important safety step you can take is to install a fence that prevents a child from getting to the pool from the house. There is no substitute for at least a four-foot-high, non-climbable, four-sided fence with a self-closing, selflatching gate. Do not place chairs or tables near a fence, which would allow a child to climb over. Portable, above ground spas should have a hard top that locks on, preventing its use also. According to a study on child drowning by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), at the time of submersion incidents, most victims were being supervised by one or both parents and 69 percent of the children were not expected to be at or in the pool, yet they were found in the water. This study shows that supervision is sometimes not enough to prevent accidents. I highly recommend installing layers of safety precautions when it comes to your home pool. Here are a few other pool safety tips: •

Along with a safety fence, consider installing a pool alarm or cover.

Be sure to remove toys from the pool when kids are finished swimming to prevent them from trying to recover them when unsupervised. Ensure that your pool is in clear view from the house, and not obstructed by plants, canopies, solid fences, or darkness. Have rescue equipment on hand such as ring buoys and reaching poles with life hooks. First aid kits should be near by too. If you use a pool or spa cover, follow all instructions for their safe installation, use and maintenance.

22

Always remove a cover completely before using the pool, and do not let standing water remain on top; pump it off. Do not allow children to play near a pool. Games and bike riding can result in someone going in, perhaps bumping their head on the way.

Atlantis Pools offers a free safety consultation for your home pool. Please call us at (925) 736-0447, email info@ atlantispoolsdanville.com or visit us online at www.atlantispoolsdanville.com to schedule an inspection.

Somnium Winery:

Danica Patrick Living The Dream By Mike L. McColgan, Resident since 1990

I

n an effort to visit all 600 wineries in Napa (400 and counting), my wife Linda and I recently had the pleasure of visiting Somnium, owned by famed female car racer Danica Patrick.

She says, “wine is about relaxing, eating great food and friendly conversation with your friends. I fell in love with everything about Napa on my first visit there. My dream of owning a winery is now a reality with Somnium.”

Our host was General Manager Tracy Smith. She is very knowledgeable and bubbling with wine energy. We had an elegant tasting on the top of Howell Mountain that was a heavenly experience. We tasted the 2015 and 2016 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Both were bold expressions of excellence with smooth finishes. We especially enjoyed the 2016 that will be released in December.

The 22 acre vineyard in located on famous Howell Mountain. Vintner Aaron Pott is making world class wines for Danica.

For more information, go to: https://www.somniumwine.com/Vineyard

Danica Patrick’s motto in life is to “dream big.” She recently retired from car racing with a Hall Of Fame resume. She now has a new passion with her winery in Napa called Somnium which is the Latin term for “dream.”

Health and Wellness

Bone up on Bone Health By Dr. Asha Bajaj, Resident Since 1986

Osteoporosis means “Porous bones”. This is a silent disease that affects nearly 68% of American women with White Caucasian and small boned Asian (including Indian women) being most susceptible. One out of two women and 1 out of 4 men over 50 years of age will sustain a hip, spine or wrist fracture related to osteoporosis. Bone is a living tissue constantly broken down by resorption and replaced by new bone formation. However the peak density of bone is reached by 30 years of age. The rate of bone loss accelerates as women enter menopause with loss of estrogen and the reduction of testosterone in older men. Often the first symptom is back pain and the development of the typical hunchback from loss of height due to loss of bone density. The major consequence is fragility fractures that increase the rate of mortality from complications. There are 2 kinds of risk factors – modifiable and non-modifiable.

Modifiable risk factors are: Diet; eating calcium rich foods and getting enough Vitamin D are important for good bone health. The recommended allowance for post –menopausal women is 1200-1500 mg for Calcium and 2000 iu for Vitamin D.The body can absorb only 500 mg of calcium at a time, so it is important to spread your intake through the day.

There are three ways to get vitamin D: • Sunlight • Food • Supplements and medications

Weight bearing exercise such as walking and weight lifting is important to build bone-so water exercise does not help you in this regard. Lifestyle factors such as smoking or excessive alcohol contribute to loss of bone. Non-modifiable factors are heredity, ethnicity, gender and age. Being female, 50+, Caucasian or Asian puts you at higher risk for osteoporosis. If there is a family history of fracture that puts you at a higher risk for sustaining a fracture. Increased age and small boned frame are also contributing factors to a higher risk for osteoporosis. It’s important to get a baseline bone density test done with a DXA or dual X-ray absorptptiometry. A bone density score of -2.5 puts you in the osteoporosis range, between -1 and -2.5 puts you in the range of osteopenia and a score of less than -1.0 puts you in the normal range. A new tool called the FRAX index gives you your risk of fracture over a 10 year period. Women • Under age 50 need a total of 1,000 milligrams (mg) of calcium* and 400-800 international units (IUs) of vitamin D every day.

Age 50 and older need a total of 1,200 mg of calcium* and 800-1,000 international units (IUs) of vitamin D every day.

Men • Under age 50 need a total of 1,000 milligrams (mg) of calcium* and 400-800 IUs of vitamin D every day. • Age 50-70 need a total of 1,000 mg of calcium* and 8001,000 IUs of vitamin D every day. • Age 71 and older need a total of 1,200 mg of calcium* and 800-1,000 IUs of vitamin D every day. *This includes the total amount of calcium you get from both food and supplements.

Your skin makes vitamin D from the ultra-violet light (UVB rays) in sunlight. Your body is able to store the vitamin and use it later. The amount of vitamin D your skin makes depends on time of day, season, latitude, skin pigmentation and other factors. Depending on where you live, vitamin D production may decrease or be completely absent during the winter. It is difficult to measure the amount of vitamin D that your skin makes so a daily supplement is a good bet. A multi- pronged approach that combines calcium rich diet with sufficient weight bearing exercise and a stress free and safe environment goes a long way in avoiding the complications of low bone density and fractures.

Dr. Asha Bajaj, PT/DPT has 30+years experience in a variety of settings including the management and operation of an outpatient private practice in Walnut Creek. Asha has served in Bhutan, India, Vietnam and Malawi, Africa with Health Volunteers Overseas to train and develop their Physical therapy program. Asha has a special interest in Women’s health and did her doctoral project in the area of Bone health and Osteoporosis. Her goal is to promote health and lifelong wellness. BLACKHAWK LIVING 27

How to Pick Out an Engagement Ring That Will Leave Them Speechless By Steve Padis, Steve Padis Jewelry, Resident since 1989

C

hoosing an engagement ring is not a decision to be taken lightly. The cost and the meaning carry significant weight, and it can be a lot of pressure trying to pick out a ring that they’ll love forever. With a little bit of guidance from experts in the diamond business, you’ll be down on one knee in no time. Here are some strategies for picking out an engagement ring that will leave them speechless…in a good way! Do Your Research Even if you think you could pick out what they like, doing a little bit of research will help ensure you make the right choice. Be observant of what their personal style says about them. Try to think of a few words that you would use to describe your significant other. Are they classic? Traditional? Or are they always up on the latest trends? This type of information will be helpful when you’re working with one of our non-commissioned advisors. Some other ways to get to know their style on a deeper level include: • • • • • •

Ask friends or family members for recommendations Find out what kind of ring their favorite celebrity wears Consider “hints” that they’ve given you Notice whether they prefer gold or silver jewelry If they have a Pinterest board, check to see if they’ve saved any rings Learn about diamond quality, settings, and the Four Cs with a trusted advisor

then seeing it in person once it’s delivered can be a tough jump for many people who end up disappointed with the quality of the diamond they receive. When you shop in-person, you’re able to ask questions about the color, cut, and clarity. An in-person buying experience gives you the trust and confidence you should have when making such a special purchase. Lean on a Diamond Expert for Guidance What’s great about a non-commissioned advisor is that you could potentially walk into one of our showrooms without any idea what to purchase and walk out with a solid plan or even a ring in hand. Many people put up a wall when they shop for engagement rings and fine jewelry because they think the advisor is only trying to make a sale. Working closely with a diamond expert is to your benefit. With years and even decades of knowledge, our staff is there to educate and guide you. Visit Padis Jewelry at One of Our Five Bay Area Locations Our showrooms are located throughout the Bay Area –with three in San Francisco, a Napa Valley location in the heart of downtown St. Helena as well as a brand new Forevermark boutique opening this summer in Broadway Plaza in Walnut Creek! Our noncommissioned diamond experts are ready to guide you to the perfect choice! Schedule your visit today by calling us at 415-8615388 or emailing concierge@padisjewelry.com.

Shop In-Person--Not Just Online It’s intuitive to simply browse online for an engagement ring. After all, shopping online is how many of us buy clothes, household items, and even groceries. We do encourage you to do some preliminary browsing online. However, unlike other diamond retailers that sell exclusively online, we believe there’s hardly a better way to shop for an engagement ring than in-person with a diamond expert. We own our inventory, so you get to take home your purchase that day. The hurdle of seeing a photo of something online and 30
