Resident Feature

Meet the Chopras: A Life Centered Around Positivity By Megan Scott, Resident since 2010

T

here are two questions people usually ask Vinod (Vinney) Chopra when they meet him. First: How did you get to where you are now? Second: How are you always smiling and so positive?

Vinney first came to the United States from India to attend college. He had a total of seven dollars to his name. He came with a dream and seven dollars to help him achieve that dream. Born and raised in New Delhi, India, Vinney received a Mechanical Engineering degree in India and first came to the U.S. to work towards an MBA at George Washington University. His wife of 39 years, Kanchan, is from Punjab, India. Kanchan moved to Canada when she was 19 years old. She has an accounting background. Residents of Shadow Creek, just outside Blackhawk, for 28 years, the Chopras always had a desire to live in Blackhawk when they retired, and that goal became a reality when they found their dream house five months ago on Pheasant Run Estates. The empty nesters are parents to Neil, who lives in Oakland and works in electrical engineering and computer sciences, and a daughter, Monica, who lives in San Francisco and holds an MBA from UCLA. Vinney started his career when he first came to the United States by selling Bibles and Educational Books door-to-door. Since then he has become a motivational speaker, fundraiser and best-selling author. “In the early 1980’s, my wife and I started to invest in single family rentals. The investments excited me so much, I decided to create a business around it. I became a Real Estate Broker in 2004, specializing in apartments and multifamily investing, syndications and management. That took off quite well. We have done 27 syndications to date. I wrote a book called Apartment Syndication made Easy and was pleasantly surprised to see 93 five-star reviews in two months,” says Vinney. Filled with an entrepreneurial spirit, Vinney has been able to be his own boss for over 35 years and plan his schedule. Kanchan has owned two businesses: Silks Unlimited and Laser Impact. Now they have two Commercial Acquisition companies and two Commercial Management companies and an Education Company. “The hardest part of owning a business is hiring the right employees, training them constantly and building the culture and to keep the morale up through daily ups and downs,” says Kanchan. Known for his constant positivity, even in the toughest of circumstances, Vinney says he credits his enthusiastic outlook on life for all his success. “Sometimes people tell me I’m too positive, and that I should not be smiling all the time. I have always believed in an individual’s ability to shape the world around them through positive thoughts, enthusiasm and selfless actions. Looking back, I remember the good things. I have to really dig and think through situations to remember anything negative. I’ve had hardships like anybody else, and there were times I was depressed, but I kept a positive attitude and that helped me overcome any negative situations.” Vinney’s been making the best out of every situation his entire life. When he first came to the U.S. he says what could have been a flight disaster ended up being one of his most treasured memories. “I finally received my Visa, and at age 23, I traveled to the United States to pursue my MBA at George Washington University. I thought my Mechanical Engineering degree would be stronger with an MBA. When I got to New York, the airline that was going to bring me from New York to Washington, D.C. was on strike. I kept telling

6

JANUARY 2020

the airline employees at the counter that my uncle and family were waiting for me, and I needed to get on the next plane to D.C. They finally said there was a flight leaving in about half an hour from Newark, New Jersey airport. What they didn’t tell me was what kind of flight. Next thing I knew, they put me in their helicopter, just me, and flew me to Newark from LaGuardia Airport in New York. It was about 6:30 in the evening, and as we flew over the bridges, I could see all the lights and the buildings. It was a spectacular sight and made an indelible impression in my memory. I’ll never forget how beautiful the New York City skyline was in this ‘great land seven seas away from India’. I still have that vivid and amazing video of that flight in my mind. The scenery was spectacular and beautiful. I thought, ‘Oh my gosh. Am I in heaven?’” From that first day in the United States, Vinney has been determined to create a rewarding life. “I can definitely say that my success is a direct result of having a positive outlook since I arrived in this great land

of opportunity with only $7 in my pocket. We are responsible for the way we use our minds. You’re born with a blank slate. Things in life are thrown at you, which will cause either a negative or a positive reaction. You have to make a decision to say, ‘No, this is not the mindset that I want. This is not the outcome I want,’” says Vinney. The Chopras work to teach young people in the community the values of investing. “We are involved in Geeta Society, Livermore Hindu Temple and Lydia Project along with various other projects in India, Africa and Cambodia. We also have a Youth Academy to teach entrepreneurship and real estate to the youth so that they can learn how to get involved in real estate at a young age,” says Kanchan. Living in Blackhawk has been a dream come true. You can find Vinney and Kanchan taking evening walks around their neighborhood. They love all their neighbors and taking in the view from their home. When they are not in Blackhawk, you can

find them traveling the world. Traveling is a huge passion for the couple and they take multiple trips through-out the year. You’ll know the Chopras when you see them. Just look for the big smiles. “I like to make everyone feel very special and believe that we are entrusted to do good in life for the people we come in contact with each and every day,” says Vinney.

Community Safety

Are You Prepared for 2020? By Aaron “Wally” Barger, Resident since 2012

F

all came late to Northern California this year; however, wildfires, earthquakes, and PG& E’s actions to avoid potential fire dangers due to high winds with scheduled outages only added to residents’ concerns. Fortunately, Blackhawk was spared from most of these events last year.

We were lucky this past year. More importantly, are we prepared for the next emergency or disaster? Community Emergency Response Training (CERT) is a local program originally developed by the Los Angeles Fire Department in 1985. Earthquakes, wildfires, and other natural disasters in California have led to the establishment of training programs in our service area by FEMA and CERT. Training is available locally by the San Ramon Valley and Contra Costa County Fire Protection Districts. Further, the Blackhawk Police District coordinates with the Fire Districts to ensure effective cooperation between all first responder agencies. CERT training is available to all residents living in the Blackhawk service area. Attendees are trained in basic disaster response skills, such as, disaster preparedness, fire safety, disaster medical care and triage as well as basic search and rescue and other

related techniques. To register for a CERT class or for answers to any questions, email cert@srvfire.ca.gov. A key factor in being prepared for any natural or man-made danger is to have a plan. At a minimum you should be in contact with your neighbors, especially those on either side of your house and the neighbors across the street. Share phone numbers, email addresses, and, at least, one out-of-area person’s phone number and email. Extending this minimal network of contacts to others on your block is highly desirable. Another important action is to have, at least, a three-day supply of food, a first-aid kit, warm clothing, blankets/sleeping bags, and other essentials, such as, flashlights, batteries, and toilet paper. It is equally important that you have a disaster plan and schedule at least one practice session per year. Finally, make sure you have a portable radio (keep a fresh supply of batteries close by). Better, yet, consider getting CERT training in the use and operation of a HAM radio. One final thought, attend an HOA Board meeting and a P2-A Police Advisory Committee meeting this year. If you have any questions, please contact me at aaron.barger@yahoo.com or email cert@srvfire.ca.gov .

Be a Boy Scout and Be Prepared! By Linda Kralik, Resident since 1984, Berkshire Hathaway Home Services, Drysdale Properties

W

hile “be prepared” is the boy scout motto, it is also a good reminder that living in California means we should be “prepared” for all that Mother Nature can throw our way. We Californians are unscathed by tornados or hurricanes of destruction, but we do have our very own natural disaster of potential devastation: earthquakes. In addition to the threat of earthquakes, there are also the yearly overflowing river banks and the ever-present fire dangers to our golden hills of parched dry grass. The past two years of crippling wild fire damage to multiple communities should be a wake-up call to ALL Californians to assess their homes and families and develop a plan to be prepared. Here are a few simple ideas and resources to help you and your family survive a nature disaster. ASSESS: Look at where you are most vulnerable. Is your home near an Open Space with dry grass near your fence line? Is your street a cul-de-sac or Court location making egress more difficult? Do you have two floors of bedrooms separating family members? What are your escape routes for either a fire or an earthquake (they may be different for each scenario)? PLAN: Have a plan for each type of catastrophe. A wild fire will require escape routes from the house from more than one exit. Know where the fire is coming from; inside lower floor, or maybe outside from the roof. Exiting safely will depend on the location of the fire and the direction the fire is taking. Have a plan for either one. Upstairs window escapes may need a rope ladder to get to the ground level. Have one or two available in the upstairs bedrooms for such. Lower level exits will depend on location of the fire. As an extra precaution, keep a spare pair of slippers close to your bed for emergencies during a fire or earthquake. These will be a blessing if you need to find your way through a minefield of broken glass trying to reach safety. For an earthquake while in your home, you need to seek shelter from shattered glass or large furniture that may shift or fall over in a big quake. Look for a strong desk or a sturdy door frame away from windows, etc. Wait for the shaking to stop then find a way to exit the home safely. Have the family agree on a “Meeting Point” that is clear from your home and away from trees and brick chimneys, which may crumble during a large shake. Included in your plan for an earthquake you should have several family members who will

be designated to shut off the gas valve from the street to the house. Know where this valve is located and have the necessary wrench right there by the valve to facilitate the shut-off. New building codes mandate having an automatic shut-off valve installed prior to a title transfer for homes located in the unincorporated areas of Contra Costa County. If you have owned your home for over 8 years, contact your friendly Realtor and ask for a recommendation for a contractor to install one in your home. This is a huge prevention of a gas leak and potential fire. In San Francisco, in 1906, what created the most damage was not the actual earthquake but the fires resulting from broken gas lines that decimated the city. Prevent what you can. There are many suggestions for maintaining an earthquake survival kit. LEARN: Contact your local fire department and learn about C.E.R.T. training in your area. CERT is a national recognized Certified Emergency Response Team program that instructs you in ways to handle many potentially hazardous situations within a community. Training and classes are usually run by certified trainers affiliated with the fire department. Contact them for more information or call your local police or sheriff’s office to find out more details. This is a way to keep up with new techniques and survival training. Assess, Plan, Learn and then communicate with your family. Have discussions, set scenarios and ask your family how they might respond. Give clear advice and most of all, make sure everyone understands the importance of keeping safe. Be safe out there and of course… HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!!!

Monte Vista High School

H

appy new year! It is time to begin the new year with a fresh start. Finals week definitely took a toll on many students during the middle of December, but celebrating Christmas and New Year’s with our loved ones definitely recharged our batteries. I am ready to begin the New Year with a new attitude. Before first semester ended, many exciting events took place. For one, the drama class put on an amazing production of Pride and Prejudice. This drama tells the story of Elizabeth Bennet, who learns to distinguish between superficial goodness and actual goodness. This play definitely moved the audience and also brought many laughs. Preparations for the Spring musical have already begun, and I can not wait to see the show! Drama is not the only class that can put on a breathtaking performance. Let’s Get Loud! was a Dance show that was choreographed and performed by all of the dance students. I could not help but dance along in my seat as the performers danced across the stage full of energy and smiles. Every single dance class, no matter their skill level, got a chance to show off their skills. The

auditorium is always full during theses shows, and it’s no secret why: Monte Vista students know how to put on a show!

One Hundred Days & The Fifth Vital Sign By Dr. Tracey James, DC

D

id you make resolutions for this new year, this new decade to live more from your heart than head? Did you resolve to restructure your life for more ease, to purge the unhealthy habits and clutter from your life? Did you also resolve to change your eating and perhaps kick the carbs? Making goals about your health and wellness are number one when it comes to new year’s resolutions most people make for their lives. So, if any of these are on your list you are not alone! If you are passionate about making lifestyle choices, we stand with you, and nothing drives progress toward goals more than passion. Let YOUR passion lead you and set parameters for progress. For females, the fifth vital sign is a quality check in on the state of your health though you may not begin to see the results of your healthful habits for at least one hundred days. Why will it take so long to see results? The journey for progesterone is long. Three lunar cycles or one hundred days is the journey’s length for ovarian follicles to develop and mature for ovulation. Ovulation, the health-giving experience, is your fifth vital sign. Your menstrual health is months in the making and it is also your body’s report card reflecting back the last one hundred days.

Embrace your body, Expand your knowledge, Empower your Life, Enter into Circle with us: New Moon January 24th 2020, Anatomy Power Wellness, 4pm-7pm with Dr. Tracey James DC and special guests. We will unblock, unwrap and understand your hormone health and receive strategies to strengthen, support and sustain your health this new year, this new decade.

Ovulation serves a greater purpose in the body beyond creating life, it is how our body makes hormones for our health. Our body’s ability to ovulate is an indicator of our health and wellness. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) in conjunction with the American Academy of Pediatrics recognizes the same findings issuing a revolutionary statement called Menstruation in Girls and Adolescents: Using the Menstrual Cycle as a Vital Sign. In their statement they recommend all doctors should ask patients about their menstrual cycles and encourage cycle charting because “menstruation is an important reflection of their overall health.” It is with consistent ritual of ovulation that the female body makes the feel good hormones of progesterone and estradiol every month. These hormones are essential for mood, libido, energy, skin, hair, thyroid and much more. What might it mean if ovulation doesn’t occur? There may be an underlying condition such as chronic stress, inflammation, nerve interference, insulin resistance, thyroid challenges, a lack of nourishment or something more at play that is worthy of investigation with a health care-practitioner. Some long term effects of not ovulating or longstanding inadequate levels of hormones can lead to osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease later in life. If you are ovulating with ritual consistency, the great news is not only do you have body literacy but you also have an indicator for health. If you aren’t sure, there is a way to begin to decode and understand what’s happening in your body. There is power in decoding your own physiology, finding solutions to help your body heal. 16

Early Education: Where the Journey Begins By Maria Ward, Principal St. Isidore School

F

or many families with young children, the start of a new year brings the task of finding the best Transitional Kindergarten/ Kindergarten program for their child. TK/ Kindergarten is where early childhood education begins, and choosing the right one can create a solid foundation for a child’s Mrs. Maria Ward, development. The process of finding the Principal best fit can feel overwhelming, but it offers an opportunity to explore different possibilities. Discovering a program that is a specific match for your child’s needs creates a clear path to success. Wondering what to look for in a TK/Kindergarten program? Look for a school that nurtures the whole child, especially during the phase of early childhood. The NAEYC states, “It is before the age of eight that a child experiences the most rapid phase of growth and development. Those years are a critical time for not only cognitive skills but social skills, self-esteem, and moral outlook.” When considering schools, take note of class size and daily schedule, the curriculum offered, and the balance between educational learning and time for creativity and fun. The program should cover basic curriculum in all subjects, but the most important academic material will be literacy and math. You know your child best and what environment is needed for them to thrive. Wondering when to start looking? Now is the time! For most schools, January is prime admissions time and they are already taking applications and offering parent informational meetings. If you missed a scheduled opportunity to visit, I encourage you to schedule a campus tour. You can learn a lot about the quality of a school from a brief tour, especially if you know what you are looking for. While on campus, try to get a feel for the school as a whole. Does it feel safe and nurturing? Is there a sense of community? What specialty programs do they offer? Do they encourage parent involvement? Can you see your family there? Your child’s school should be a place you like to visit. I wish you a rich and rewarding journey as you explore schools for your child. Remember—these years are special and filled with opportunity for learning and fun.

Scottsdale Arizona Gem: The Boulders Golf Club

By Chuck Fox, Owner, Quintessential Golf, Resident since 2012

T

wo championship courses, the North and the South, designed by Jay Morrish in the mid-1980s, are the foundation of the Boulders Golf Club. Built in the foothills of the Sonoran Desert covering 1300 acres, both courses feature scenic views of the Black Mountains, natural desert terrain peppered with native saguaro cacti and rock formations. Large mildly undulating and consistently well-conditioned greens are outstanding. It’s one of the handful of public access courses in Arizona with bentgrass greens.

Catcus Target Practice

Wildlife is abundant. You may share your round with coyote, bobcats, quail, ducks, owls, roadrunners, and a resort favorite – the pig-like javelina. The Boulders Resort itself is a high-quality Hilton property with separate rustic casitas hosting wood-burning fireplaces, a 33,000 square foot spa and a variety of desert adventure activities. It is one of only two Golf Magazine Gold Medal resorts in the Scottsdale area. The thirty-six holes were built nine-holes at a time. Jay Morrish completed both the third nine (1984) and the final nine (1992). The Boulders is his first solo design. “The Boulders afforded me the chance to create a desert Pine Valley with a lot of forced carries for the good players,” Morrish said. Although desert carries are frequent, five sets of tees ensure that they can be reasonable if you select the correct tees for your skill level.

South Course The South course is the newer course. Completed in 1991, it is more difficult than the North course and has multiple forced carries. If you have time for only one course, play the South. The scenery is so good that production companies film TV commercials here. Precision shot making is needed else you play with the cactus. A 35-foot high boulder pile frames the first green and inspires the name. The Par 5 Hole #5 teeing ground delivers one of the more fabulous views on the course. A steep drive up to the elevated sixth tee reveals a dramatic view. A boulder formation curls directly around the teeing ground.

North Course The North Course opened with the original lounge/restaurant in January 1984. It lacks the stunning scenery of the South. There are few difficult forced carries (from the correct tees), and the fairways are generous. But the green-side bunkering is extensive, and the longer back nine has a bite. Although this course is more playable than the South Course, it remains a significant challenge. When you see the North Course opens with a Par 5, you think it’s an easy start. When you arrive at the first tee and see the forced carry and accuracy required, you realize this course is no picnic. It

Water in Play

often requires careful placement of the tee shot in the fairway for the best approach. Both courses are immaculate from tee to green. The Boulders Golf Club is a tranquil and exhilarating experience at the same time. The North Course is more playable than the South Course. The South course is more scenic and challenging. It’s not inexpensive. It’s a Troon managed course, so Troon Prive and Troon Advantage members get great discounts. See high resolution photos and course profiles for both courses on my website at www.quintessentialgolf.com/destinations/ boulders-south/ and www.quintessentialgolf.com/destinations/ boulders-north/.

If You Go: Course Info: The Boulders Golf Club is a semi-private club with two golf courses, the North and the South. Courses alternate between member access and public play daily. Location: Twelve miles north of Scottsdale in Carefree, Arizona and thirty miles north Phoenix Sky Harbor airport. Lodging: The Boulders Resort and Spa, by Hilton, is located on-site.

The Short Scar Facelift By Stephen J Ronan, MD, Blackhawk Plastic Surgery, Resident Since 2007

A

s people age, the effects of gravity, exposure to the sun, and the stresses of daily life can be seen in their faces. Largely due to loss of fat in the central face, there is an inevitable descent of cheek tissue that creates a depression (a hollowness of the lower lid area, fullness in the lower face, and jowling). The neck skin and muscles loosen, causing central fullness and blunt the sharp distinction of the jaw and the neck. This happens to all of us! Most patients are every day, average people with a desire to look as young as they feel. Patients want to return to work and regular activity with minimal scars and no visible signs of surgery. The traditional long scar face lift fails to address the causes of facial aging. Previous methods involved removing a large amount of skin, which makes the face tighter and flatter (more surgical and pulled looking). The long scar provides access to remove a large amount of skin. This is NOT what we want!

The short scar facelift has less risk and a shorter recovery than a traditional facelift and can be done as an outpatient. The biggest plus is a completely natural look (not pulled!). Consequently, there are many younger people that we can help who would not be candidates for the more traditional and standard looking facelift.

Many years ago I moved to a more modern facelift with a short scar. The short scar facelift can eliminate over half the scarring. There is no scar along the hairline behind the ear; which is the most troublesome part of the traditional scar. In addition, I typically replace some of the lost volume with your own natural filler, your own fat.

A facelift procedure doesn’t stop the aging process, it just sets the clock back a number of years. The best candidate for a facelift is a man or woman who feels they are showing age. Most patients are in their forties and up. While a facelift can make you look younger, and more youthful, it may also enhance your self-esteem in the

24

process. You will not look like a different person, just more refreshed and less tired. A facelift can be done alone, or in conjunction with other procedures such as a forehead lift, eyelid surgery, or a body/ breast procedure. Ancillary procedures (skin care or laser) are common in patients both before and after surgery. If you want a facelift, it is best to see a board certified plastic surgeon. Buyer beware of ‘weekend, quick fix’ type procedures done by non-plastic surgeons. Explore the possibility of sculpting a new you.

eflections on traveling through Lucerne and Alicante... my favorite bits and treasured photos I photographed.

Mount Pilatus... While we were in Lucerne, we took the Golden Round day trip to Mount Pilatus, Lucerne’s landmark mountain, for an incredible panoramic view of the snow-covered Swiss Alps. The half - day trip took us on a breathtaking beautiful gondola ride through different mountain ranges and an aerial cableway to the summit at 7,000 feet high with stunning panoramic views of Lucerne and it’s beautiful lake. It was so much fun to walk among the clouds. The yellow beaked crows zooming past me also added to the whole mystique - hard to miss. To get back, we took a scenic train ride down the mountain to the village below, on the world’s steepest cog railway. From there we went on a boat trip on the spectacular Lake Lucerne that finally brought us back to the city. The whole experience was dramatic, magical and breathtaking.

Back home... Lastly, my favorite, anytime, to go stop is to enjoy the beautiful waterfront setting of Blackhawk plaza with its duck pond, waterfalls and fountains, all year around. What’s your favorite pick of 2019? The sight of day-old ducklings born on a spring day in Blackhawk

every type and shape. One of my favorite spots while visiting here was Alicante’s crowning glory - the medieval Santa Barbara Castle. At 545 feet high atop a hill, it guards the city and has jawdropping unforgettable views of the city and Mediterranean coast below. Another popular and happening scene is at the Explanada De España - promenade with palm trees and surrounded by shops and restaurants. Alicante’s buzzing scene is definitely worth exploring.

Sonia Lamba As an aspiring photographer, I have always loved taking beautiful photos of my friends and family, nature and travels. After having a fulfilling career in finance in New York, I moved to California in 2014 where my love for photography turned into an invigorating passion. Moving to gorgeous Blackhawk has further enriched and blossomed my love for the camera. I take my camera everywhere, regardless of how short the distance is. Nashville:

Country Music, Food and Fun By Mike L. McColgan, Resident since 1990

R

ecently my family enjoyed a visit to the country music capital of the world Nashville, Tennessee. From the Oakland airport, you can get a direct flight to Nashville. In Nashville, we stayed at the elegant and centrally located Hermitage Hotel. This landmark hotel has been providing Southern Hospitality since 1910 and is a Forbes 5-star rated hotel. The newly created grand foyer leads to the stunning lobby, called one of the most beautiful public rooms in America. After we checked in, we took a short walk to Kid Rock’s newly opened musical playground. It has 5 stories of food, live music and fun. It also has a rooftop bar with stunning views of downtown Nashville. Kid Rock is known as ‘America’s Bad Ass’ and is originally from Detroit. His new Nashville establishment opened last October and rocks with lots of energy every night until 3 am. It is the hot new spot In Nashville and packed with a lot of happy music lovers. The next day we took the ‘Hop on Hop Off’ tour eyeing the many sights of this vibrant city. We especially enjoyed the Country Music Hall of Fame and Vanderbilt University. For lunch, we enjoyed a famous ‘hot chicken’ sandwich at BB King’s Blues Bar with live music. After lunch, we went to long-time favorite Mike’s Ice Cream and enjoyed a ‘Tennessee Fudge’ waffle cone. After a brief rest at the hotel, we had a driver pick us up and take us to the famous Grand Ole Opry and experienced one of my son’s favorite country singers, Lee Brice.

In addition to Lee Brice, the show had ‘outstanding‘ performances from John Conlee, Jimmie Allen, The Whites, Thompson Square, Rob Ickes and Trey Hensley, Dusty Slay and Maggie Rose. The entire show was 2 hours of ‘high energy country star excellence.’ The next morning my long-time friend and Nashville resident picked us up and drove us to Lynchburg to tour the famous Jack Daniels Distillery. Lynchburg is about 1.5 hours from downtown Nashville, and the tour was very informative and interesting. We tasted 6 of their great whiskeys. Our favorites were old number 7 with its creamy and clean finish and Tennessee Fire with the unmistakable character of old number 7 combined with an intense warm cinnamon taste. The Honey Whiskey and newly released Apple Whiskey would also make for a great after dinner drink when served chilled. After the tour we drove to Brentwood and had a great lunch at long-time favorite Mere Bulles. It is located in a former southern mansion with stunning art work and excellent Southern Food including a few we tried like hot chicken salad, carrot cake and key lime pie. Our final day, we toured the Musicians Hall of Fame. It is more extensive than the Country Music Hall of Fame as it has a variety of music history from Motown to Jimmy Hendrix to Johnny Cash to mention a few. If you are brave and feeling on the wild side, you can play instruments on stage and even do Karoke with Ray Charles.

28

After the tour we enjoyed dinner at famous Tootsies and a concert at the Ryman Theater featuring the Gatlin Brothers and Crystal Gayle. This 2000 seat theater is a ‘must do’ and features a variety of great entertainers. In conclusion, we would highly recommend a visit to the ‘country music capital of the world.’ It is no wonder that 100 people are moving here every day. Low taxes, good weather, and lots of fun things to do is attracting many new residents. We look forward to returning soon. Like Humans, Dogs Thrive on Consistency and Routine By Kerylin Mott, Owner, Dog Tired Adventures

A

little structure in your dog’s life can be beneficial for everyone in the household, especially when it comes to exercise. Regularly exercising your dog is just as important as exercise for you. Health benefits include helping hip joints, reducing digestive problems, and keeping your dog a healthy weight, which decreases the likelihood of developing other health problems. The benefits of keeping your dog on a regular exercise schedule extend far beyond just health. As humans, having a predictable schedule and fun plans to look forward to help us to get through long or stressful days. The predictability of a regular exercise schedule can give your dog something

to look forward to also. By nature, dogs are pack animals and when left alone for extended amounts of time, it can take a toll on their mental well-being. They can turn to destructive behavior like aggression, barking, escaping and causing damage to the home to reduce stress. By offering them a fun daily adventure to look forward to that is physically stimulating, it breaks up the loneliness and relieves symptoms of boredom and frustration. To ensure that your dog lives a healthy and happy life, make sure to schedule regular exercise. Most dogs enjoy the great outdoors and are master explorers; it is in their genes after

all. Walking will allow your dog to become more socialized and accepting of new situations and environments, which helps build his self confidence. Dog Tired Adventures offers daily adventures for your pup while you are busy at work or with the kids. We truly enjoy taking your dog on our adventures. Considerations Regarding Athletic Mouth Guards By Richard Anthony, DDS MS -- Blackhawk Orthodontics

T

he exact origin of the athletic mouth guard protector is unclear. Most evidence indicates that the concept of a mouth guard was initiated in the sport of boxing by Dr. Woolf Krause, a British dentist, around the time of 1892. In the 1940’s and 1950’s, dental injuries were responsible for 24-50% of all football injuries. At that time, the American Dental Association (ADA) began conducting research on mouth guards and soon promoted their benefits to the public. Mouth guards should be used by anyone—children and adults— who play contact sports such as football, boxing, soccer, ice hockey, basketball, lacrosse, and field hockey. However, even those participating in non-contact sports (for example, gymnastics, baseball) and any recreational activity (for example, skateboarding, mountain biking) that might pose a risk of injury to the mouth would benefit from wearing a protective mouth guard. As a practicing orthodontist, I most often see traumatic

dental injuries to the teeth as a result of a blow to the mouth from a baseball or as a result of a fall. There are three basic types of mouth guards. 1) Stock mouth protectors are pre-formed and come ready to wear. They are inexpensive and can be bought at most sporting good stores. However, little can be done to adjust their fit, they are bulky, make breathing and talking difficult, and provide the least effective protection. 2) Boil and bite mouth protectors also can be bought at many sporting good stores and may offer a better fit than stock mouth protectors. The “boil and bite” mouth guard is made from thermoplastic material. It is placed in hot water to soften, then placed in the mouth and shaped around the teeth using finger and tongue pressure. 3) Custom-fitted mouth protectors are individually fabricated in a dental office or professional laboratory based on your dentist’s instructions. First, your dentist will make an impression of your teeth and the mouth guard is molded of the model using the special material. Due to use of special material and extra work involved, this custom-made mouth guard is more expensive than the other types, it provides the most comfort and protection. Your dentist or orthodontist can suggest the best type of mouth guard for you. An effective mouth guard should be comfortable, resist tears, be durable and easy to clean, and restrict your breathing or speech. If you had a piece of sports equipment, endorsed by the American Dental Association, that could reduce the risk of sports-related dental injury by 60 times—would you use it?

A Magical Time in Florence By Bobbi Bach, Resident Since 1995

I

recently traveled to Florence, Italy to visit my son, David Bach, who has moved his entire family and dog to Florence for a year. He decided to take what he calls a radical sabbatical when his latest book, The Latte Factor hit the New York Times best seller list in May and made him a 10 times New York Times best selling author. My grandchildren, Jack, 16, and James,10, are loving the Florence International school. While in Florence we traveled by train to Venice, Italy. Luckily we had a glorious 4 days in Venice a mere two weeks before it was flooded. Another fun tidbit is that David’s book, The Latte Factor, is coming out in Italian in the near future.

An Introduction to Peptides By Paul H. Kim, MD, Medical Institute of Healthy Aging

A

s anyone who has taken basic biology remembers, peptides are chains of amino acids. Amino acids are the building block of proteins, which are one of the main classes of nutrients we ingest, and also form the foundation of many of our body parts. The difference is that proteins are comprised of thousands of amino acids, whereas peptides are composed of tens to hundreds of amino acids. The main function of the peptides seems to be as signaling molecules, meaning they represent a class of hormones. There are estimated to be over 250,000 peptides active in our body. One of the most recognized peptides is insulin. Insulin is critical for maintaining sugar balance within our system. Other hormonal peptides include Calcitonin for helping with bone and calcium metabolism, oxytocin which is active during the birthing process, and growth hormone releasing peptide, which is responsible for releasing stores of Growth Hormone. Certain peptides have already been marketed and approved by the FDA, such as insulin and its “counter-hormone”, Glucagon Like Peptide -1 or GLP-1. However, there are many other peptides, that have not been “appreciated” by the pharmaceutical industry, that are readily available now through compounding pharmacies. These peptides are noted to have some remarkable properties for healing and restoring balance in the body. They include:

Ipamorelin – a peptide that helps with Human Growth Hormone modulation and may have other cytoprotective effects. It may actually be safer and have more effects than Human Growth Hormone therapy itself.

BPC 157 -- a peptide found in the gastric juices of humans. It has shown positive effects on both soft tissue such as tendons and also with gastric ulcers and may have a benefit in inflammatory bowel disorders, like Crohn’s or Ulcerative Colitis.

Thymosan Alpha -1 – a peptide found to be very important in regulating inflammatory and immune responses. These are among the peptides that can be compounded presently and used to help patients with various ailments. Please come to Medical Institute of Healthy Aging to consult and explore these therapies for improved health.

Ring in the New Year with a New Look! By Steve Padis, Steve Padis Jewelry

H

appy New Year from our family to yours! This is the perfect time to kick off the New Year by re-doing the ring you wear and enjoy daily. Resetting your diamond is a great way to get a whole new look. Whether you have a pear-shape, marquise or a classic round brilliant diamond, we at Padis can show you the hottest new styles that you will be sure to love.

Remember, no matter the shape of your diamond, it can be remounted into a beautiful new setting. It can be difficult to let go of something with so much personal value attached to it, but Padis Jewelry can help guide you toward the best option for what to do with your piece, and make sure you are well educated in all the different options.

There are endless reasons as to why you would want to re-set your center diamond into a new mounting. Tired of your old setting, not happy with the quality of the ring, was not a design you truly wanted, or fell head over heels with a design you saw on Padis Jewelry’s Instagram account? When updating a ring or remounting your center diamond, there is always the question: well what can I do with my old mounting (setting)?! There are a number of different options, some naturally more cost-effective than others.

Still love your ring the way it is? Stop by for a complimentary cleaning service. You’d be surprised at what it can do! Whatever you choose, your rings should always be a reflection of your love and spark memories of the moments shared throughout your life. Our team at Padis Jewelry is happy to assist you in any way. Don’t hesitate to visit us at the Forevermark store in Broadway Plaza, give us a call or shoot us an email! Concierge@padisjewelry.com

The first option is to keep it! Some of us like to plan ahead and think in terms of taking care of those we love, so keeping your old mounting to make a gift for a loved one, or helping your soon to be son-in-law marry your daughter, is one sentimental option. You can set a complimentary cubic zirconia in it and keep it as a travel ring for vacations. The next option is to have it set with a colored gemstone. Sapphires, emeralds, and amethysts can turn your old mounting into a beautiful, colored-stone ring. This will allow you to keep your ring which may hold sentimental value and wear it as an alternative to your new engagement ring.
