We Are Now Online!! Hi Neighbors!
www.BlackhawkLivingCA.com
I’ve had a few similar questions asked recently by our neighbors so I thought that I would take the time to share the answers with the community. As the founder and publisher of Blackhawk Living, I personally meet with every single owner of each business to approve them as a sponsor. The sponsors in our magazine are selected in the area of reputation, customer service and expertise in the category of business. Not every business is able to be guaranteed in our magazine just because they are in business!! I hope that you find Blackhawk Living as a protection filter for you, the consumer. Furthermore, these sponsors make our community magazine possible - there are no paid subscriptions, it is delivered free to you each month! While you are free to deal with any business, inside or outside of this magazine, these businesses made a decision to be a part of our community. They want your patronage. Without our sponsors’ generosity, our community magazine would not exist, so give them a chance and make them earn your business! Fondly,

Meet the Williams Family: A Full House of Fun By Megan Scott, Resident since 2010
W
hile on a routine flight returning to Los Angeles after visiting her boyfriend in the Bay Area, Tara Williams settled down in her seat on Southwest Airlines aisle 25 and settled in to close her eyes for the flight. She was about to fall asleep when she saw a man in a hooded sweatshirt and sunglasses slowly walking down the main aisle. The man suddenly stopped in front of her and she almost jumped out of her seat. Then she realized it was her boyfriend, Rob holding out a ring. He had sneaked onto her flight to propose before she headed back to Los Angeles. Rob and Tara met through mutual friends while they were both working in San Jose. Tara says she knew she wanted to marry Rob after their second date. “On our second date Rob told me that his mom’s birthday is May 15th. My father, grandfather, godfather AND twin brothers are all born on May 15th. It was a sign that he was the one!” Growing up not far from Blackhawk, in Alamo, Rob attended college at the University of Saint Mary in Kansas, earning a degree in business. He has worked in wealth management since he graduated, and recently joined Fidelity. “I have a passion for helping families and small businesses plan for and achieve their financial goals. I feel blessed that my new role with Fidelity reduced my commute time from over an hour to just 15 minutes. Now there is more time for family and golf after work,” Rob says. Tara grew up in Wakefield, MA just outside of Boston. She graduated from
Bentley University in Waltham, MA with a degree in finance. After spending 10 years working in medical device sales and market development, Tara has recently started her own business, Dreamland Baby. Dreamland Baby is a premier line of wearable weighted blankets designed for babies 0-12 months. Tara says the idea for the business came from their youngest son, Luke. “At almost six months old Luke was still waking up every hour and a half. Like so many other new parents we were desperate for sleep. One night we placed him under a heavy throw blanket and noticed he immediately calmed down. A light bulb went off in my head: he needs a weighted blanket! With the help of my mother-in-law, together we sewed a prototype. The first night wearing the weighted sleep sack, Luke slept 12 hours! We couldn’t believe how immediately his sleep was improved. The idea to bring Dreamland Baby to families everywhere was born! Dreamland Baby is currently live via Kickstarter, so it is a very exciting time for our family and business.” If anyone knows a thing about sleepless nights, it’s Tara and Rob. They have four children under the age of six, which keeps them very busy. Six-year-old Brooklyn just finished Kindergarten at Tassajara Hills Elementary and is thriving in competitive soccer with Mustangs. Five-year-old Lydia is enjoying dancing at Next Step, and both girls love tennis at Blackhawk Country Club with coach Jason and are Daisy Girl Scouts. Four-year-old Beckett loves playing mini hawks golf at Blackhawk Country
6
Club and one-year-old Luke enjoys spending time with mom while the older kids are at school. He also loves baby story time at the library. “Brooklyn, Lydia and Beckett are super close in age. Brooklyn and Lydia are 14 months apart and Lydia and Beckett are 17 months apart,” says Tara. We needed a three year break before we welcomed Luke to the family. The Williamses are very involved in their church and community activities. Tara is involved with the Iron Horse Mother’s Club the girls and Tara are part of a Daisy Girl Scout troop and Mustang soccer. Tara and Rob both played sports in college; Tara played soccer and ran track and Rob played basketball. Rob always joked he didn’t care how many children they had, he just needed one boy because he knew they would have a star athlete. Rob plays guitar, piano and sings in a band. If you were to ask Tara and Rob their favorite way to invest in their family, it’s traveling says Tara, “We travel to Boston every year for Christmas to visit my parents, four siblings and extended family. It’s one of our favorite weeks of the year! We also make it a point to take one week-long family trip and one “dad and mom only” trip each year.” In 2019 they will be traveling as a family to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, and Rob and Tara plan to visit China. “Our greatest currency is our time and we cannot save it. Making memories together and unplugging from every-day, crazy life is the best gift we could gift our children and ourselves.” JUNE 2019
needed there.” Rob says they found the perfect home to meet everyone’s needs. “We live just inside the East Gate on Deer Hollow Drive. We purchased our home December 2016 and embarked on a nine-month renovation. We officially moved in August 2017. Tara has been talking about building a house since we were first married, but we could never find the right lot. Purchasing a home that needed to be torn down to the studs was the next closest thing.”
Blackhawk was a perfect match for the Williams family. Rob’s parents live in Blackhawk and after visiting them for years for family dinners, Tara says she fell in love with the neighborhood. “We were living in San Jose at the time and it was so hard to leave Blackhawk at the end of a visit. It was easy to convince Rob to move to Blackhawk because he loves to golf, so no convincing
Tara says it’s the people that make Blackhawk so special. “We absolutely love living in Blackhawk! We felt so welcomed by our neighbors and the Country Club as soon as we moved in. We have met some of our best friends through golf and bocce. Rob loves golfing, and I love spending time at the gym. Wednesday night at Falls Club is one of our children’s favorite night of the week. They also love going to the neighborhood playground. We enjoy playing tennis as a family and hanging out at the pool with friends in the summer.”

fter your “Spring” clean out maybe it is time to take a long look at your home. Maybe this is the time you want to “spruce up” a room or two by adding some color or re-tiling, or maybe just “get into this century of updating.” In the past the trends were dominated in the tech-obsessed décor of 2018, with it’s stark contrasts, sharp lines, and hard utilitarian surfaces. Fortunately, 2019 is trending toward a softer look, using more color and natural materials. Here are some ideas for introducing more natural elements to your home. Rose gold and subway tiles were extremely hot trends in 20172018 that are now seeing a softer side in 2019. Soft pink tones

subdue the grays and warm the room. The subway tiles are still in use but finding more pattern differences than just the straight line off-set. For instance, Herringbone and Basket Weave are just a few of the different designs now being used. As for the rose gold of 2018, there will be less of this and more metallic objects introduced into the décor of the home. Copper accents mixed with additional metals bringing out the reds and orange tones making a more earthy hue. Older fabrics, such as large print patterns and velvet, are seeing a resurgence. Once viewed as luxurious yet funky, the multidimensional patterns and velvet sofas and settees are leading the way for being the most desired trend for 2019. This decorating trend has been around in this year and gaining popularity. However, we will also see floral patterns in a new light. Decorators expect to find exaggerated proportions and contrasting colors used for this timeless decor pattern. While muted colors prevent spaces from feel overwhelming, the 2019 trend is the use of bolder colors. The present belief is that 2019 will be a year where bolder colors are preferred. Richer hues throughout your home can make your more muted furnishings and decorative decor pop. Look for places you can use dramatic reds, or make a statement with pinks, bold yellows or organic green colors. In addition to the above suggestions, here are some other ideas seeing a comeback, in a new way. The use of bucket sinks, matte finishes on furniture, canopy beds, burnt yellow accent colors, metallic accents, and Artesian Lighting. Moving toward fresh, natural materials such as stone, copper, concrete, and granite. will help bring an organic and serene ambiance to any space while reflecting the world around your home. So bring on 2019 in your home.

How can we find joy in our spending? When we know it aligns with our values and goals. This sounds simple, but is not so easy to do in real life. First, we don’t often think about our values.Things like good health, caring for family, or securing a thriving future do not come to mind as we browse on-line or stand in the grocery store. But they should. Our values should be front and center to our life every day. They should be obvious in our goals and our actions. And, certainly in our spending. One way to get there is to define our goals and keep them written down in front of us as a reminder. However, I find that this can only work over the short run as such rote, repeated processes tend to wear us down over time. Instead, I propose that you simply “know” where you spend your money. A quick review of your spending forces you to consider whether it is aligned with your values. Because your values define who you want to be, this review acts as a check on how you’re doing versus who you want to be.

Biscuits And Blues:
Live Nightly Music And Southern Cuisine In The Great City By The Bay By Mike L. McColgan, Resident since 1990
I
n an effort to dine at all 3000 San Francisco restaurants (900 and counting), my wife Linda and I recently had the pleasure to experience Biscuits and Blues. Located near Union Square in the heart of San Francisco, Biscuits And Blues offers live blues music in an intimate venue from local, regional and national bands. It is a fun experience of great music, southern inspired cuisine, salads, New Orleans gumbo and a unique drink selection. We enjoyed the gumbo, biscuits and a drink called the Kings Sazerac. This drink was a blend of Bullet Rye Bourbon, Bitters, Pernod and lemon peel that complemented the music perfectly. We had the pleasure to experience Pryor Baird. Pryor is originally
from California and made his mark in Nashville. He gained national recognition when he was a semi finalist on the popular Voice talent show. His voice was soothing and packed with power just like our Kings Sazerac libation. It is no wonder he did so well on the Voice. We went to the 7:30 show and arrived at 6:30 to enjoy dinner before the show. There is also a 10:00 pm show. We would highly recommend this long time San Francisco icon. It is a great place to enjoy live music and great food for any business gathering, special occasion, holiday or birthday celebration. How to Keep Critters
out of Your Pool By Jon Lubrano, President, Atlantis Pools Inc.
T
he fact is bodies of water are a natural habitat for many animals, including those that can cause serious harm like snakes and spiders. They prefer darker, more vegetated areas, which provide some protection from predators, but your pretty blue pool will sometimes do the job. Snakes are most active AprilOctober, and spiders are seen year-round. In my years of pool service, I have seen firsthand how dangerous bites from Black Widow and Brown Recluse spiders can be along with rattlesnake bites. The best way to avoid contact with these creatures is to discourage them from using your pool as their own private oasis. Spiders love to build webs around pools because they like damp areas and because pools attract flying insects, which is a favorite meal of spiders. Hanging out near your pool could mean an easy dinner for

them. Be extra aware of damp and dark areas like underneath a pool skimmer or cover. We also frequently find them in the nooks and crannies under equipment. Trim any bushes or vegetation around your pool. Spiders hide in vegetation and search for prey. If the vegetation is eliminated, the spiders have no reason to spend time in or around your pool. Outside shoes can also be a hazard. Many people leave a pair of shoes outside to slip into. That’s where spiders can hide. If needed, there are also insecticides that can be very effective. One of the scariest potential problems when taking a dip in the pool is to find a snake. Most snakes you find in or around your pool are relatively harmless, however we have seen an increase in the rattlesnake population this season. Snakes can be difficult to get out of water once they make their way into it, so prevention is the key to such a problem. While there is no foolproof snake repellent, you can make the area unappealing to them. Ensure grass around your pool is kept short. The taller the grass, the more likely snakes will come around. All tall weeds should be removed as well. Next, remove any clutter, such as toys, pool supplies or tools from the ground. Wood, mulch or compost piles should be as far away from the pool as possible. Any potential hiding spot for snakes will increase the chance of them making their way into the pool. Keep in mind; food scraps and birdseed can attract rodents, which in turn can attract snakes. Lastly, keep a pool cover on when you are not using your pool. This is especially important at night when snakes feel more comfortable coming around homes. Most importantly, if you feel you have been bitten by one of these poisonous creatures, assume the worst and go to the hospital immediately. Stay safe! Golf Destinations
Golf Destination: Seven Canyons Stunning Red Rock Cliffs in Sedona, Arizona By Chuck Fox, Owner, Quintessential Golf, Resident since 2012
M
ulti-hued rock formations vertical from the high desert floor depict a hypnotizing landscape that changes color with the light. Perhaps the most impressive vistas in the entire Southwest astonish us in the canyons near Sedona, Arizona. With almost 2 million acres of national forest, Sedona is a sanctuary for hiking, biking, and “jeeping” among the red-rock pinnacles, arches, walls and cliffs. But don’t overlook the spectacular golf. Carved through the canyon floors is the magnificent Seven Canyons Golf Club sporting 360-degree views that take your breath away. Only 20 minutes from the village center, yet Seven Canyons feels remote. Nearby, the 70-acre world class Enchantment Resort presents a quiet, relaxing immersion experience for both the body and the mind. Sporting panoramic views of the red rocks and mesmerizing sunsets, guests enjoy access to the members only course. At 4700 feet elevation, Seven Canyons Golf Club averages ten to twelve degrees cooler than Phoenix two hours to the south. At this altitude pine trees, including some towering Ponderosas, flourish side-by-side with the desert flora in this vegetative transition zone. “We’re part of the largest continuous scott pine forest in the nation,” remarked Dave Bisbee, Director of Golf, longtime PGA member, a golf aficionado and industry luminary. A 200-acre island circled by the Coconino National Forest, architect Tom Weiskopf sculpted the holes on a broad scale to boost the impact of the panoramic vistas. Weiskopf’s layout takes advantage of the rolling terrain and abundant trees to mislead the proper tee shot target line on many holes. Hence, the best starting line may differ from expectation. Bunkers are targets, either short or long, hence the driver is not always the right choice. Yet, this desert courses sets up much like a links course allowing running shots up to many greens. Hence, most would call this a heathland course. Fairways are a bluegrass/rye mixture and the well-manicured greens are a creeping bentgrass. A hole that stands out for members and visitors alike, number 3, is a 154-yard par 3 from an elevated tee. The short carry to reach the green is not great considering the elevation, but the menacing bunkers in front and the panoramic views of the surrounding red rock formations are enough to distract even the most focused player from the task at hand. Water borders the right side of the 310-yard par 4 sixth, a picturesque hole that’s a good birdie opportunity if you stay left. The following hole, number seven, is a wonderful 178-yard par 3 over water. Get through these two and you’re finished with water. Now enjoy the mesmerizing scenery.
Breathtaking – panoramic view from the par 3 fourth tee at Seven Canyons Golf Club
Holes eleven and twelve stand out for me. They are short back-to-back par fours. Eleven is straightaway uphill 330yard hole with a devilish blind green sloping away and framed by red rock cliffs in the distance. The 285-yard par 4 twelfth is another favorite that sets up an attractive risk/reward trade-off. Two fairways are evident from the tee, bisected by two center bunkers. If you opt for the tiny grass patch on the left side of the fairway, you have a short pitch or putt to the green setting up an easy birdie. There are other courses in the area, but this is the quintessential golf in Sedona.
Solitude – pine trees frame red rock cliffs on par4 ninth hole at Seven Canyons Golf Club

New Purchase/Refinance Mortgage…. Pay Points & Fees or Take the No Cost Option? By Steve Cline, Preferred Financial
M
ortgage loans for purchases and refinances will always carry thousands of dollars in points and fees. Options for paying the fees include paying them upfront, adding them to the principal (in effect, financing them) or my preference: opting for a slightly higher interest rate and doing a zero-cost loan. Below is an actual loan that closed at the end of April 2019, with the differences noted between paying fees up front and the zero-cost mortgage. I never recommend financing fees so that option is left out of the analysis. The loan in this example had an under-75% loan to value, a 720 credit score, a loan amount of $585,000 and 1.3% points charged. Using those parameters, the points and fees (including all nonrecurring closing costs such as the appraisal, title, escrow, etc) total $10,378.
If paying the fees upfront, the 30-year fixed rate would be 3.71% with a monthly payment of $2696. If choosing the zero-cost loan option, the rate would be 4.18% with a payment of $2854, a difference of $158 monthly. Dividing the cost for the same loan amount by the difference in the monthly payments ($10,378 divided by $158), it would take 65.7 months to recapture the fees paid upfront. I almost always recommend the zero-cost option. It not only frees up cash but also allows you to refinance if the rates go down within those 65.7 months with no penalty. As always, I will be happy to give you all options available for any given purchase or refinance.
“We listen, we educate, then we perform like no one else in the industry.” We provide home financing services, including Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, jumbo and portfolio home mortgage products. We are a family owned business since 1979, when we pioneered the zero cost loan.

Why Do Some Children Undergo Orthodontic Treatment at an Early Age? By Richard Anthony, DDS MS, Blackhawk Orthodontics
A
s an orthodontic practitioner for over 27 years, I often get asked by a parent, “Why do some of my child’s 2nd grade classmates already have braces?” When you think about it, this question makes sense because, on average, a child does not have all of the permanent teeth erupt until four years later at age 12. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that all children get an orthodontic evaluation by a specialist at the age of 7. A check-up at this age may reveal that a child’s bite is just fine. Or, the orthodontist may identify a developing problem but advise that he continue to monitor the child’s facial growth and dental development periodically; and then, if indicated, begin treatment at the appropriate time. In other cases, the orthodontist may find a problem that can benefit from early (interceptive) treatment. Early treatment may prevent or intercept more serious problems from developing and may make treatment at a later age shorter and less complicated. In some cases the orthodontist will be able to achieve more optimal results that may not be possible once the face and jaws have finished growing.
Pest Control
Early treatment may give your orthodontist a chance to: • Guide jaw growth • Lower the risk of trauma to protruded front teeth • Correct harmful oral habits • Improve appearance • Guide permanent teeth into a more favorable position • Create a more pleasing arrangement of teeth, lips, and face
Weed Control Tree Service
Some signs or habits that may indicate the need for an early orthodontic consultation include early or late loss of baby teeth, difficulty in chewing or biting, mouth breathing, thumb or finger sucking, crowding, displaced or blocked-out teeth, biting the cheek or roof of the mouth, teeth that meet abnormally or not at all, jaws or teeth that are out of proportion to one another, and a smile that is not symmetrical. Because patients differ in both physiological development and treatment needs, the orthodontist’s goal is to provide each patient with the most appropriate treatment at the most appropriate time. Through an early orthodontic evaluation, you’ll be giving your child the best opportunity for a healthy, beautiful smile—for a lifetime! 20

Community Safety
We Should Have More Residents

he Blackhawk service area consists of a fully staffed police department, which provides security and safety services for our residents and guests. Of course, they are not alone because the County Sheriff’s Office provides a variety of backup services as does the cities of Danville and San Ramon as well as the California Highway Patrol.
is a very useful step to protect your home, property, and family. Another low cost way to protect your property is to leave one LED inside light and several LED outside lights on each night. Further, lock all your doors before retiring for the night or while away.
You would think with such horsepower our little community is well protected, and it is. Even when criminals are highly motivated, they still need to seek out vulnerable victims. The Blackhawk police are always on the lookout for potential situations that leads to a crime. It is obvious that police presence in our community is very important and an essential service for all of us. But, if you and your neighbors were to take an active role in watching out for one another, you will enhance community police security services by increasing the “eyes and ears” on your block. If you have not established a viable network with your neighbors to mutually agree to keep a lookout and notify one-another, including the police, about any questionable or aberrant behavior around your property, you need to create such a network. This
Your involvement in the Blackhawk service area is vitally important. Your participation in forming a network of neighbors on your block will enhance the safety and security of the community. Further, forming a Neighborhood Watch program in cooperation with the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Department will increase your residents’ awareness and ensure additional support for the police officers in performing their responsibilities. If you have any questions regarding this article or want additional information, please contact me at aaron.barger@yahoo.com. If you or any of your neighbors are interested in forming a Neighborhood Watch Program, you can contact me or call the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Department, Crime Prevention Unit, and ask for Christina Lind-Winters at 925-313-2682 to schedule an orientation meeting. There is no charge for this service, but your participation in this prudent step means a safer more secure community for all of us.

Repetitive Strain Injuries By Dr. Asha Bajaj, Resident Since 1986
R
epetitive strain is related to the overuse of muscles and tendons in the upper body.
Certain things are thought to increase the risk of RSI, including: • • •
repetitive activities doing a high-intensity activity for a long time without rest poor posture or activities that involve working in an awkward position
Cold temperatures and vibrating equipment are also thought to increase the risk of getting RSI and can make the symptoms worse. Stress can also be a contributing factor. If you work at a computer all day, make sure your seat, keyboard, mouse and screen are positioned so they cause the least amount of strain. Let’s begin with a few basics: Most of the back and neck strains that occur are often due to repeated patterns. The combination of prolonged poor posture, faulty mechanics and lack of movement during the day, sets up a
cycle of pain, stiffness and subsequent disability. The human body is designed for locomotion not for sitting for prolonged periods. Anatomy: The spine is divided into 3 levels: the cervical spine consisting of the top 7 vertebrae, thoracic spine attached to the ribs by the 12 vertebrae and the lumbar spine (5 vertebrae) attached to the pelvis with the sacrum junction. The spine has 3 natural curves slightly forward (lordosis), at the cervical (neck) and lumbar region, counterbalanced out by a slightly backward curve at the thoracic spine. As long as we maintain these 3 natural curves the biomechanical forces are distributed evenly and efficiently, allowing for pain free motion. However sitting often reverses the curve in the lumbar region and pushes the head forward putting the neck in a vulnerable position! Adding insult to this injury is the use of laptops and handheld devices and your head may not look up for many hours!

Posture: First of all find ways to re-position yourself so the neck retains its natural curve forward (lordosis). A simple way to accomplish this is to sit on a seat wedge so your knees are slightly lower than your hips giving you back the 2 natural curves at the lumbar (low back) and your cervical (neck) spine. Alternately you can roll up a small towel and place it in the small hollow of your back. In standing, think of your head attached to a string on the ceiling. Tuck your chin in slightly focus eyes at an object on eye -level and pull yourself upright for good posture. Ergonomics: Now take a look at your work surface: Do you use the computer at home on a kitchen table or at a work desk or mainly on your lap? Each of these surfaces requires you to follow a few basic principles: --Maintain the natural curves of the spine --Keep arms/hands in the “piano position”. --Monitor needs to be at a 15 degree angle to avoid eye strain --Sit to face the monitor directly ahead of you; hold book or reading materials up to your eyes rather than hang your head while reading. --Use a foot wedge if your feet are off the floor.

Mechanics: When you are sitting at your work surface ,you should be facing the monitor and have everything else within reach of an arc of 45 degree angle .This allows your telephone, calculator etc to be within forearm reach with arms tightly sitting by your body rather than the constant reach and bend involving the shoulder and torso.

The Summer Slide: A Ride You Don’t Want to Take By Peggy Arman, The Dorris-Eaton School
S
chool is almost out for the summer. Although summer break is a reprieve from enforcing early morning wakeup calls, packing lunches, and managing car pools, parents trade these tasks to focus on ensuring there is a balance between learning and leisure activities. It can be a struggle to counter the “summer slide.” Unlike the term implies, a summer slide isn’t the newest attraction at Waterworld. It’s the loss of academic skills, particularly in reading and math, that occurs when children are home for the summer without stimulating activities to fill their time. While parents intuitively know that a variety of events are needed to keep their children occupied, they may not realize the cost of a summer focused on being busy rather than being stimulated. Duke University summer-learning expert Harris Cooper collected and analyzed over a century’s worth of academic studies and
“concluded that, on average, all students lose about a month of progress in math skills each summer.” However, after monitoring the progress of students from kindergarten through high school for over 20 years, Johns Hopkins University researchers found that “the better-off kids held steady or continued to make progress during the summer-- but disadvantaged students fell back.” Why? Parents of well-to-do students tend to enroll their children in quality summer schools and camps. Summer programs that review, apply, and extend concepts learned in school keep the mind active. Writing, literature, and math workshops offer opportunities for students to practice their skills and enjoy learning. Experiences that require students to problem solve and/ or expose them to new ideas and skills keep their minds active. Debate sessions, for example, teach participants to analyze and summarize information into a coherent argument as well as present and defend their point of view. Robotics classes typically teach a programming language, problem-solving skills, and working well in a group. In addition to high-quality camps, parents who model the importance of reading and require summer reading see improvement in their children’s ability to comprehend material. When families discuss the books they have read, it creates an opportunity to share perceptions. Frequent trips to the local library and participation in a summer reading program are valuable as well. Equally important are educational trips to parks and local museums to broaden horizons. Even the annual summer vacation can enhance learning when children prepare the trip budget, use a map to determine the best route to travel, and prepare a guided tour of the locale. Keeping children meaningfully involved staves the summer slide and minimizes struggles over screen time. Give your children an educational advantage this summer by purposefully selecting an array of summer sessions, workshops, and camps that keep their minds actively engaged. The “summer slide” is one ride you don’t want your children to take.

Summer Travel Jewelry Care By Steve Padis, Steve Padis Jewelry, Resident since 1989
W
eekend getaways, jaunts to the beach, and fullfledged vacations are perks that pretty much come with the territory during the summer months, so it’s no wonder that summer fashion tips such as what to wear, what to pack, what to buy—are at the forefront of our minds right now. One thing, though, that’s not quite as readily on our radar is the idea of jewelry, and how the summer months might affect our pieces. Namely, how we can protect our beloved rings, jewelry, necklaces, and earrings from the season’s elements, and how we can keep them secure while jetting off somewhere sun-filled. Our jewelry can take a serious bruising when exposed to summer activities such as lounging in the sand, applying suntan lotion, and traveling. Whether your summer plans include a weekend trip or a week abroad. Here are some helpful hints to keep in mind while you enjoy the beauty of summer: 1. Sunbathe without your gems Sunscreen can coat gemstones, which reduces refractive and reflective light. Essentially, this means your stones won’t be as brilliant or sparkly. To avoid this, leave your fine pieces at home if you’re heading to the beach or the pool for the day, and be sure clean them regularly all summer. 2. Organization is key when traveling. When jumbled together, your jewelry doesn’t always get along. For example, a diamond can scratch a pearl, and a bracelet can get caught on a necklace, so always pack pieces in individual soft cloth pouches or lined jewelry boxes to prevent scratching, dulling, and the dreaded tangling of chains.
Many stores in vacation destinations prey on unknowing tourists whose guard is down due to a few too many mojitos. When in doubt, check a retailer’s reputation and rating with the Better Business Bureau and always ask for an appraisal. The appraisal should always have the store’s letterhead, and a clear signature of a member of store management. 5. Before you go away, be sure your jewelry is adequately insured. If you decide to bring an especially valuable piece on vacation— perhaps your engagement ring, a pricey watch, or a family heirloom—always be sure it is fully insured. Always obtain insurance through your homeowner’s or renter’s policy, it is safe and more affordable than you would imagine. Our team at Padis Jewelry is happy to assist you with any questions or maintenance for your pieces to ensure they stay safe and sparkly throughout the year. Wishing you and your family lots of happy memories and vacations during these lovely summer months!
3. Keep it safe. When selecting a hotel, be sure that safe deposit boxes are available. Never leave fine jewelry unattended in a hotel room, a rental car, or on a lounge chair—even if you’re just popping over to the bar for a Mai Tai. 4. Shopping for something new? Do your research. Oftentimes, vacation destinations are also prime shopping destinations, so if you get the urge to commemorate your trip with a new fine jewelry purchase make sure you’re buying from a reputable jeweler that’s been in business for several years. 30
