Dear Neighbors,

We Are Now Online!! www.BlackhawkLivingCA.com

It’s that time of year where we celebrate and honor the mothers! Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 12th. Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there! May also brings Memorial Day, which in my book, is the gateway to summer. It’s the cue to pack up the winter clothes and bring out the sandals. Whether you are heading out of town or spending the holiday grilling in your backyard, we hope you have a safe and relaxing holiday weekend. Blackhawk Living is your neighborhood magazine, and in this issue you’ll meet your neighbors, the Cancilla Family. They came to Blackhawk all the way from Australia and have loved getting to know this remarkable community. In this month’s community calendar, you’ll find many ways to get involved in the community. Plus Blackhawk Chef, Parisa Z. Ambwani shares one of her favorite recipes. Warmly,

Megan Scott

Resident Feature

Meet the Cancilla Family: From Down Under to Blackhawk By Megan Scott, Resident since 2010

I

t was a love of science that brought Mike and Belinda Cancilla together. They met in 1990 while studying science at a college in Melbourne, Australia. Mike was a senior and Belinda was a sophomore. Mike says it only took one date for both of them to realize that they had great chemistry and were meant to be together, “It was the way she looked at me with those beautiful blue eyes, and I knew she was the one.” Mike proposed on his birthday and after a one-year engagement they were married in 1993. Originally from Italy, Mike migrated to Australia when he was a child. Belinda was born and raised in Australia. Mike and Belinda are scientists, and both have Bachelor of Science (Honors) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees in biological sciences from the University of Melbourne in Australia. “Science is an amazing profession as your own research findings contribute to the existing knowledge base and allow other scientists to advance the field. You can literally link your work back to the earliest publications in chemistry, physics and biology,” shares Mike. “Science is fun, I get to discover something new every day,” adds Belinda. Mike’s postdoctoral research focused on genetics of pediatric diseases including chromosome abnormalities and Type1 diabetes. After Belinda completed her PhD thesis on kidney development, she did postdoctoral research at the Monash Institute focused on prostate cancer. They decided a move to the San Francisco Bay Area would be a good way to expand their research skills and grow their careers; a South San Francisco biotech/pharma company recruited Mike

to find new treatments for cancer. Belinda did further postdoctoral prostate research at University of California - San Francisco before also joining a biotech/pharma company to focus on oncology research and treatments. Mike has remained at the same company for nearly 19 years. He has held positions of increasing responsibility and is currently Vice President of Program Management for oncology drug development. During Mike’s tenure, several drugs were discovered and approved for the treatment of thyroid and kidney cancers. “The most rewarding part of my career is knowing the work I do everyday makes a difference to the lives of cancer patients -- hearing their testimonials is very rewarding and emotional,” says Mike. Belinda has held positions of increasing responsibility working at two peninsula biotech companies. She is currently the Senior Director of Histopathology, Translational Medicine. During her career she has focused on cancer pathology and biomarkers, which means she spends a lot of time looking at cancer tissues from patients, trying to determine if and how they have responded to new treatments, like immune-oncology therapies, where the patient’s own immune cells are recruited to attack any cancer cells present. Her work in histopathology looks at several biomarkers at once on cells in different colors, and is a bit like coloring in for grown-ups. This is often where her choice of vivid and rainbow hair colors comes from. “I am always thrilled to see that our experimental therapy is giving patients a few extra months beyond their diagnosis to spend with family and loved ones,” says Belinda.

6

After residing on the peninsula for many years, the Cancillas decided it was time to make a move to the East Bay. “We would regularly drive past Danville on our way to Golden Gate Australian Football league games in Concord, where Mike played and I cheered from the sidelines. We loved the Danville layout and restaurants, and ultimately decided on the perfect family home in Blackhawk,” says Belinda. Mike and Belinda have two children attending Tassajara Hills Elementary School. Hayden, a 5th grader, and Chantalle, a 4th grader. Hayden and Chantalle both love sports and music. Hayden takes karate lessons and plays soccer. He also plays the trombone in the Tassajara Hills school band. Chantalle also does karate, but her passion is gymnastics and her favorite activity is spinning around on the bars anywhere she can find them. She also plays the flute in the school band. “Her favorite craft activity is making slime, so there has to be a steady supply of glue and glitter in the house.

MAY 2019

Hayden loves math, geography and history, whereas Chantalle loves math and creative writing. They are both avid readers and can be seen reading books any time we go out to dinner,” says Belinda. Running is a favorite pastime for the family. Hayden and Chantalle have participated in several kid races with their parents, and they all got to run the 5K together in this year’s Run For Education for the SRVUSD. Mike has run multiple half and several full marathons, whereas Belinda sticks to the half marathon distance and has run many races. “We love Blackhawk for all the hills and trails, which are perfect for training. I run six days all around Blackhawk. I’m currently training for the Boston Marathon. Blackhawk is a great place to live (and run), we have a wonderful community, great neighbors and access to world class facilities,” says Mike.

volunteered teaching biology practical classes to middle schoolers at the Ravenswood School District in East Palo Alto for several years. “It has been amazing to see kids discover how exciting science can be, and particularly rewarding to see girls take an interest in STEM subjects and future science careers,” she shares. Once Mike and Belinda had kids, they kept their travel very family friendly. This past summer, they finally decided it was time for the kids to visit Australia as they were born in California and had never traveled to another

Volunteering and giving back to the community is important to the Cancilla Family. Mike volunteers as a head coach for the U12 Kangaroos boy’s soccer team (Mustang Rec League). Belinda has

country. The family took their summer vacation as a winter vacation in Australia. The kids got to meet all their uncles, aunts and cousins in person. Grandma and Grandpa had been to California many times, and they were excited that they finally visited them. The family visited Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, and even got to go to see their favorite Australian Rules Football team North Melbourne win a game in Brisbane. And yes, they saw lots of kangaroos and koalas. Thanks to Mustang soccer, the Blackhawk Country Club and and Tassajara Hills Elementary Foundation events, the Cancilla family have had the pleasure of meeting and making new friends in our community and have felt very welcomed. They are thrilled to call Blackhawk home.

ost people will delay paying tax as long as possible. We see this quite often in taxable investment portfolios where you can choose to sell investments with gains or losses when readjusting your portfolio. The typical approach is to avoid selling gains as long as possible and only sell the losers in order to benefit from a write-off. But following this method over time will distort your portfolio, moving it away from whatever optimal strategy you decided to put in place. This is especially true if we don’t replace the investments sold with something substantially similar. And if we do, we run the risk of violating the IRS’s wash sale rules which will negate the tax effect anyway.

OsteoStrong® is the first ever system developed specifically to help you strengthen the foundation of your body – the skeletal system.

A better method is to raise cash as needed in a proportional manner throughout our portfolio, keeping the strategy intact. This may cause us to pay a bit more tax today but ensures our desired risk/reward structure remains in place.

Unlike other health solutions, you don’t have to spend hours at a gym or exert physical energy that will leave you feeling tired by the time you’re done. Just show up as you are and we’ll handle the rest!

One wrinkle is that when we pass, our assets shift to our heirs while resetting the cost basis. This argues in favor of selling only losers as we get nearer our demise.

• Sweat-free • Painless • Once a week

Like so many other areas of financial planning, if we know when we are going to die the best strategy becomes clear.

Good Communication Skills?

Apply here.

By Peggy Arman, The Dorris-Eaton School

F

rom high tech to conventional occupations, it’s not surprising that being an effective communicator is consistently one of the top three skills employers seek in a candidate. Being able to listen to others, articulate thoughts, and express ideas in writing are invaluable skills which are not developed overnight. Communication literacy is formed early and refined over time. Self-expression blossoms when toddlers begin to acquire language and builds as they expand their vocabulary. When children possess the words that best describe their emotions and ideas, others can more easily understand them. Their capacity to communicate facilitates making friends and paves the way for harmonious play. Enroll your three- and four-year-old in a preschool that focuses on vocabulary development to help children communicate. The preschool sandbox is the work place group project. Follow quality preschool education with a K-5 language arts program that sets the stage for successful interpersonal interactions, delivers a solid writing curriculum, and provides ample opportunity to take center stage. Kindergarteners can learn to identify the audience, choose words carefully, and look peers in the eye to gauge whether the message is being well-received. Elementary school is the perfect time to teach children to stand up straight, make eye contact, and speak with a loud, confident voice. Schools with strong language arts programs teach students to determine if a source is credible and how to logically sequence information. Utilizing an interesting opener, meaningful repetition, and salient data and examples are refined as students mature and develop their writing ability.

be a public speaker. The goal is to possess the confidence and skill to articulate thoughts or ideas in any venue. Being an effective communicator can open doors and may be the skill that clinches that spot in a top-tier university.

Junior high is when students can really find their voices and are able to digest constructive criticism to further explore and articulate their ideas. Assist your children by selecting a school with specific times set aside to teach grammar, writing, and literature; quality instruction in each subject enables students to learn and practice expressing themselves clearly and confidently. Interdisciplinary units require students to transfer skills learned in one class to other classes. This creates multiple opportunities to practice and refine research, writing, and speaking skills. Look for schools with active debate teams and school-wide speech contests. Students have incentive to “step-up their game when competition is involved. Listening to an opponent’s argument, reading their nonverbal communication, evaluating their stated facts, and finding a counter point all become “real rather than academic. Students begin to view listening, speaking and writing expertise as important and powerful tools.

Now is the time to save on gorgeous carpet during National Karastan Month. See store for details.

Top Pool Safety Tips for the Summer Swim Season By Jon Lubrano, President, Atlantis Pools Inc.

S

ummer is almost upon us, which means it’s your pool’s busy season and a good time to brush up on pool safety. To maintain a fun and safe environment around your swimming pool, there are several basic pool safety tips I advise all pool owners to follow. Make pool safety a priority in your backyard by following these guidelines: Have Compliant Drain Covers (VGB) Virginia Graeme Baker, after whom the Pool and Spa Safety Act is named, died from drowning due to a suction entrapment from a faulty drain cover. All pools and spas should have drain grates or covers that meet safety standards to avoid incidents like the one that took Graeme’s life. Powerful suction from a pool or spa drain can even trap an adult. Safety Gates Secure your pool with appropriate barriers. Completely surround your pool with a fence or barrier with a self-closing, self-latching

and outward facing gate. Place a safety cover on the pool or hot tub when not in use and remove any ladders or steps used for access. If you have small children, consider installing an alarm to alert you anytime anyone goes from the house to the backyard. Consider a Poolguard® Safety Buoy Pool Alarm This is a pool alarm that meets county and city requirements for safety and is innovative in that it will alert you in your home, any time something substantial falls into your pool. It’s floats in your pool and is easier and more effective than many door alarms. GFCI and Pool Lights The ground fault circuit interrupter, better known as the GFCI is a safety device used on installations with a higher than normal risk of electric shock. GFCI is a fast-acting circuit breaker designed to shut off electric power in the event of a ground-fault within as little as 1/40 of a second. Pool lights need to be linked to the GFCI to prevent electrocution. Learn CPR Ensure everyone in the home knows how to respond to aquatic emergencies by having appropriate safety equipment and taking water safety, first aid and CPR courses. Keep All Glass Away from Your Pool This summer Atlantis Pools has had to drain three separate pools due to glass tables in backyards that broke resulting in glass in the pool. I can not stress enough how important it is to keep all glass out of your backyard if you have a pool. Spa Use and Alcohol Alcohol and spa use should never go together. Common side effects of drinking while submerged in hot water are dehydration, heat exhaustion and drowning due to impaired reflexes. At Atlantis Pools Inc., we want you and your family to have a safe and fun experience with your backyard pool. Please call us at (925) 736-0447, email info@atlantispoolsdanville.com or visit us online at www.atlantispoolsdanville.com to schedule a visit.

Hiccup or Bubble? By Linda Kralik, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices/Drysdale Properties, Residence since 1984

T

he big question of the day in the minds of both home buyers and home sellers is whether we are in a housing bubble or just a hiccup in the market. The median Bay Area home price rose at its slowest year-over-year pace in two years in January as a slowdown that hit the real estate market in September continued into the new year. The previous 13 months had consecutive months where prices had risen in double digits until September of 2018, when the market downshifted amid a big jump in inventory. Buyers backed off during the past three months of the year amid a fear of a continual rise in interest rates, a sharp stock market correction and general lack of affordability. According to a research firm, CoreLogic, the median price paid for a new or existing home or condo in deals that closed in January in the nine counties was $730,000, down 7 percent from December and up 2.2 percent from January of last year. To narrow down the data, let’s just look at what has happened in Blackhawk within the first three months of this year versus the previous year of 2018, to see where the trends are going.

March 2018 March 2019 % Change Active 37 35 -5.4% Pending 19 12 -36.8% Sold: 21 21 0% In the same time period, it must be noted that the price per square foot went up 9.3% to an average of $484.00 and the Days on Market went from 52 days to sell to upwards of 96 days to sell.

(925) 449-1203

Just looking at the first three months, the numbers are not really reflective of a Busting Bubble, however they do indicate a slowing down of the buyer frenzy of the past two years. Buyers are recognizing the fact that they have more choices and they are a little pickier about what they will accept and expect in a home that they are looking to purchase. Typically, our market begins to heat up right after Valentine’s day as buyers like to “Spring” into our Selling Season. That being said, the above chart shows that the number of Pending Sales (Those homes where a purchase contract has been accepted but not yet closed) is down over 36%. And this is our busiest selling time. This being the case, Sellers need to be aware that multiple offers are now the exception, not the norm and that they should be willing to negotiate on legitimate offers made on their homes. It has been a reality shock for the Sellers to make this adjustment in their thinking and how they should respond. But all is not doom and gloom. We have a very good economic outlook with many tech and IT firms getting ready to go public, which always increases our market. We have the wonderful amenities of a beautiful Country Club with ‘resort’ style living that is coveted by many home buyers. We are all very blessed to live and play in this wonderful community called Blackhawk.

Minneapolis 2019:

Final Four

By Mike L. McColgan, Resident since 1990

M

arch Madness culminated in the city of Minneapolis this year as the 4 best teams in college basketball aka the ‘final four’ earned the right to try and become a National Champion. My wife and son won the final four ticket lottery a few years ago and now get tickets to this great sporting event every year. This year the final four teams were Auburn, Virginia, Texas Tech and our Alma mater Michigan State. This sporting event is the ‘pinnacle of fun’. It is a 4-day party on steroids. The event was held at the luxurious 67,000 seat USB Stadium in the heart of downtown Minneapolis. The stadium opened in 2016 and is the home of the Minnesota Vikings. In 2018, it was the host of the Super Bowl between the Philadelphia Eagles and New England Patriots.

The National Championship game was exciting as always. In overtime, Virginia edged Texas Tech 85-77 in a battle to the end. We were very happy for Virginia as it was their first National Championship victory in the school’s history. In conclusion, our trip to Minneapolis was extra special this year with the MSU Spartans playing in the Final Four. We look forward to going to host city, Atlanta, in 2020 and seeing the Michigan State Spartans return to complete their unfinished business and win the National Championship. We would also highly recommend a visit to Minneapolis, a great city filled with lots of things to do, restaurants and very friendly people. The best time to visit is April thru October as the weather is very cold and snowy the rest of the year.

We arrived on Friday and attended the open practice of our Alma mater Michigan State. We also enjoyed connecting with our California friend and Final 4 announcer Jim Nantz. Jim also does the Super Bowl and heads to Augusta next week for the prestigious Masters golf tournament.

Pest Control

At the Minneapolis Convention Center, we enjoyed ‘Fan Fest’ that has exhibits, celebrity appearances, music, food and fun. You can also have your picture taken with National Championship Trophy. The semi-final games took place on Saturday. In the first game, Virginia beat Auburn by 1 point with 3 clutch free throws with no time left 63-62. In the second game, Michigan State was upset by an aggressive Texas Tech team that had a brilliant defense 61-51. It was a very disappointing ending to a great year for Michigan State.

Weed Control Tree Service

The National Championship game was played on Monday night. On Sunday, we went to the Mall of America and enjoyed the indoor amusement park and a unique shopping experience at this massive mega mall. We also enjoyed eating at Jimmy Buffett’s restaurant highlighted by the Minnesota Wild Rice Chicken Soup. Opening in 1992, the Mall of America has over 350 stores. 40 million people visit every year, and the mall generates 2 billion dollars of revenue. After the Mall of America, we toured Paisley Park. This 9-acre 65,000 square foot property was the artist Prince’s home and studio. His performance of ‘Purple Rain’ at the 2007 Super Bowl is rated as the ‘best’ halftime show in Super Bowl history. The tour is very interesting and takes about 90 minutes. He died in 2016, but they told us he had enough music in his vault to make one album a year for the next 100 years. He was truly a musical genius. 22

Life through a Lens

By Sonia Lamba, Resident since 2015

T

he sound of my bicycle bell is a sign that spring is finally here! As I bike down the hilly path, the soft breeze brushing my face feels just right. And of course, buds, flowers, colors, birds chirping and longer days are here too. I am ready to ditch the cold and rain and embrace the warm and dry weather.

The 12 mile Blackhawk loop with top elevation of 800 feet is a favorite among cyclists. Biking and passing along lush Blackhawk and Diablo country clubs, crossing beautiful ranches and horse stables along the Diablo Road makes the trail very scenic, interesting and a must do.

I am out biking on the Blackhawk Road with beautiful plum and cherry blossom trees lining it, pretty yellow mustard flowers and lavender purple flowers popping on the small hills; and the specter of the mighty Mt. Diablo (Devil Mountain) rising in the distance somehow seems to be challenging me. It’s a pretty easy ride up to the parking lot before the tennis courts. But when the Blackhawk road changes into Diablo road at Mt. Diablo Scenic Blvd., it’s a totally different story with me panting and ready to quit and turn around.

Another of my favorite trails is the Iron Horse trail, just a few minutes from us. I see here a mix of cyclists, walkers, runners and joggers. In Danville, this trail runs directly behind houses and shops in downtown area. On weekends, my family and I ride up to Danville Harvest, our favorite place for lunch or bike over to farmers’ market to enjoy the crepes at one of the stalls.

Cheery bright yellow mustard flowers

I am sure this is inspiration enough for you readers to go out and ride. I would love to hear about your favorite bike trails!

Town of Danville Sponsors Second Annual Open Studios By Chris Kenbar, Danville Resident since 2011

L

ast year, Danville enjoyed the first Open Studios in several decades. 27 artists showed their work across Danville and over 1200 Danville and nearby residents enjoyed the opportunity to see a broad variety of outstanding art, much of it on sale. This year, Open Studios will take place on May 11 and May 12 – Mother’s Day weekend. This will be an excellent opportunity for mothers and their families (and everyone else!) to wander around the neighborhoods in Danville at their leisure and see or buy from the very high standard of work to be presented. Each location will be clearly marked with a street side sign. Additionally, local artists will be demonstrating plein air painting at the Dao House, accessible by shuttle from the Danville Museum on Railroad Avenue. Danville town staff, working with the Danville Arts Commission, have been busy registering artists and preparing the brochure that will list the locations where work can be seen along with images of the art. A map will be included. Brochures will be available at the Village Theatre Gallery on Front Street on both days of the event. Artist studios will be open from 11am to 6pm Saturday May 11 and from 11 am to 5 pm on Sunday May 12.

Tricia Grame is one of the featured artists that will be participating in Open Studios. She will be hosting a couple of other artists in her studio as well. Both the artists and their visitors thoroughly enjoyed last year’s event and this year will be no different. Be sure to visit Open Studios on Mother’s Day weekend!

About Rats By Mike Scott, Honest Rodent Proofing

R

ats are incredibly hardy animals who have never shown any problem adjusting to change. Usually that change is the introduction of a new poison, as humans constantly work harder and harder to exterminate these animals. But perhaps no other animal resists such attempts better than the rat. Rather than looking for more powerful and potentially dangerous ways to kill rats, the only real answer to people’s conflicts with these animals is to alter the habitats in which they choose to live to make them less attractive and acceptable. Common conflicts and solutions Food: Rats will eat anything a human will, and more. But worse damage is done by their urine and feces, which are left behind on any uneaten food. Burrows: Although rats may create damage with their burrowing, it’s usually more superficial than structural. Chewing: Since their front teeth grow all their lives rats, chew on things to keep them worn down. This can be dangerous when they gnaw on electrical wiring. Public Health: Rats can carry many diseases that are harmful to people.

Keeping rats out Rats can enter buildings through many openings: • • •

Holes as small as 1 inch wide (about the size of a quarter). Heating vents. Gaps anywhere electrical conduits, utility or air conditioning lines, or water pipes enter a building.

If you think you may have a rat issue, Honest Rodent Proofing offers the latest in eco-friendly Rodent Control and Rodent Removal techniques. At Honest Rodent Proofing we know it’s much more than just rodent control to our clients...it’s about a healthy environment and peace of mind, in your home or place of work. We pride ourselves on effective solutions to your rodent problem. A lot of companies focus on volume of work, instead of focusing on the customer, and for us customer service is our passion. Call today to learn more about Honest Rodent Proofing’s industryleading 4-step process to get rid of rats, mice and other rodents. Call 925-433-3988 today to set up your FREE inspection or go to www.honestrodentproofing.com for more information.

Tolerance Tolerating rats is not something many people want to do. For many reasons people and rats are unlikely to coexist peacefully. But coexist we will, as perhaps more than any other wild animal, rats have adapted to living among humans. That we do not generally tolerate their presence does not mean that we need to use dangerous and inhumane methods to destroy them—or accept a no-holdsbarred way to controlling their numbers. The best way to control rats is to discourage them from taking up residence in the first place. Typically, conditions that support high rat populations are left until there is a real crisis at hand. Then the poisons are used or trapping employed to reduce the population, only to leave unaddressed the cause of the problem in the first place. Any effort to limit rat populations must be followed by taking the necessary steps—exclusion and sanitation—to make sure the same problems never happen again. Identifying rat signs Inside • Gnawed holes up to two inches wide in baseboards or at doorframes (indicates they’ve been there a while). • Smudge marks (body oils) on walls. • Sounds of movement in walls and attics. • The family pet staring intently at a blank wall. Outside Burrows may indicate the presence of rats. To find out if the burrow is in current use, loosely fill it with soil or leaves and check it in a day or two to see if it has been reopened.

lease join us to discuss Beneath a Scarlet Sky by Mark Sullivan.

Set during World War Two, the book is “Based on the true story of a forgotten hero, Beneath a Scarlet Sky is the triumphant, epic tale of one young man’s incredible courage and resilience during one of history’s darkest hours.” It has been a Best Seller and is a compelling read. This story is based on the experiences of the author’s father, and the author will be attending our meeting. He will be an exciting guest and we hope to have many people coming to hear him talk about the book and about his father. We will meet on Tuesday, May 14, at 10:00AM in the Ladies Lounge at the Lakeside Clubhouse. All are welcome. If you have questions, please contact Mary Camezon (mcamezon@ pacbell.net) or Ruth Swedlow (ruthswedlow@yahoo.com).

What You Need to Know About Identity Theft and Fraud By Aaron “Wally” Barger, Resident since 2012

N

early 1.8 billion dollars was reported lost to fraud in the last two years. Children and seniors are at the greatest risk when it comes to scams. Approximately 30,000 complaints of child and teen identity thefts were reported last year and 20% target children. It is estimated that identity theft or fraud will affect more children before they turn 18. The Federal Trade Commission reports that 35% of fraud complaints and 19% of identity theft complaints affect American seniors 60 years of age or older. For seniors, the likelihood of being the victim of a scam is greater because they trust the wrong person most often via phone calls or emails. Wire transfers are the most common method of paying money to scammers. Telephone contact with victims occurs about 70% of the time. The second most common method (9.7%) is by e-mail. Only 5% of the time is a complaint reported due to letter mailed to a victim’s home.

California is ranked third in the nation for reported identity theft. In a recent study, California had a 140 identity theft complaints per 100,000 people and reported a total of 55,418 cases. California ranked 18th out of the fifty states in fraud statistics, which reflects a comparatively lower number of complaints at 570 per 100,000 people. However, California ranked number one with 225,296 complaints reported. Surprisingly, only 27% of all identity theft complaints reported had contacted law enforcement regarding the theft. And, of those only 87% indicated a report was taken. Most significantly, the emotional and financial impact of identity theft has consequences beyond the loss of data and personal information. For many victims the time and money to correct the damage is significant. Many victims have to borrow money from family or friends, take time off from work, or sell possessions to pay for expenses caused by identity theft.

The most egregious affect upon the victim and family is the emotional distress that can last a very long time. Many victims feel their personal financial security has been compromised. This can cause a sense of helplessness or powerlessness. The vast majority of victims suffer distress for the misuse of their information. In many cases, victims seek professional help to manage the experience of identity theft, either through treatment of physical symptoms or counseling services. How can you tell if your identity was stolen? It can take up to three months to determine whether you are a victim of identity theft. Persistent monitoring of your accounts and personal information is essential. Many people sign up for an identity theft protection product. To report identity theft or fraud, contact the Blackhawk Police Department at 925-646-2441 for additional information or help. If you have an interest in forming a Neighborhood Watch program in your area, contact me at “aaron.barger@yahoo.com”. The Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office, Crime Prevention Unit, can schedule an orientation meeting. Ask for Christina LindWinters at 925-313-2682. BLACKHAWK LIVING 29

Our Favorite Inspirational Jewelry Gifts for Graduation 2019 By Steve Padis, Steve Padis Jewelry, Resident since 1989

Graduation is a time of celebrating achievement and new beginnings. For such a significant milestone, a gift of fine jewelry will be a lasting reminder of a grad’s accomplishment. If you have a loved one graduating this year, here are a few graduation jewelry gift ideas for the class of 2019.

Diamond Stud Earrings For a woman, consider a pair of classic diamond stud earrings. Diamonds symbolize endurance and inspire confidence in all who wear them, making them the perfect understated accessory for upcoming interviews. Even the smallest diamonds will make her feel like she’s wearing a piece of luxury. We have a large variety of diamond earrings in a variety of price ranges; find your perfect pair with one of our diamond experts. Charm Bracelets For younger graduates, from middle school to high school, a charm bracelet with its first charm—such as a graduation cap, initial, or diploma pendant—can start a lifelong tradition of honoring significant occasions with jewelry. We carry Pandora® bracelets as well as Rembrandt charms to start the perfect gift they will add to and treasure throughout their life. Watches For men and women who like timepieces, select a gift that is both functional and fashionable. A quality watch is a classic choice for a graduation gift. A fine watch will never go out of style and it instantly dresses up any outfit. Michelle, Breitling and Tag Heuer watches, all available at our stores, are excellent selections that will last your graduate a lifetime. As an added bonus, they’ll have no excuse to be late for their first day on the job!

pieces are full of history and memories, and there’s no better time to pass them along than during a family celebration. Of course, many graduates appreciate cash or gift cards to help with expenses as they start the next phase of their lives. A gift of fine jewelry, however, will be appreciated for years to come and perhaps even become an heirloom itself. To the class of 2019, congratulations and best wishes!

Cuff Links & Tie Bars Cuff links are appropriate in many situations. For the graduate about to enter the suit-and-tie world, cuff links and tie bards will be needed for upcoming interviews as well as daily office wear. They can also be purchased in school colors for those who want to show school allegiance even after their days on campus are over. A set of personalized cuff links or a tie bar will make him look sharp and selected to match his individual style and personality. Vintage or Heirloom Jewelry In many families, graduation marks a rite-of-passage, and is the perfect opportunity to pass down a piece of heirloom jewelry. From grandmother’s ring to a great-uncle’s watch, heirloom
