Meet the Morgans: Deeply Rooted in the Community By Megan Scott, Resident since 2010 | www.BlackhawkLivingCA. com
A
difficult hike and the need to stop and take a rest is what brought Joe and Monique Morgan together almost 20 years ago. They both happened to be hiking the Yosemite Falls trail in Yosemite on the same day. Joe says he is thankful it was a warm day because it required him to stop and rest. “It was an allday hike with a lot of switch-backs during a warm May day. Because of the steepness of the hill, there was a lot of pausing and getting to know those hiking around you. On one of my rest breaks, Monique was standing about 12 feet ahead under a tree and said, ‘There’s shade up here with your name on it.’ That was all it took for me to fall for her. We’ve been as close as we can be ever since.” Monique planned the wedding, and Joe was in charge of the honeymoon, but Joe says Monique gave him one condition, “Monique wanted to sit on the beach and have someone bring her drinks. We ended up going to Fiji and had a terrific time!” Born in France into an Air Force family, Monique grew up in Sacramento and married her high school sweetheart, Bob. They had a beautiful daughter, Nicole. When Nicole was only three-years-old, and Monique was the young age of 26, she became a widow. Bob passed away after battling leukemia. He was 29 years old. Being a single parent, with a mortgage and young child was devastating, but Monique’s perseverance and family made it all possible. “Raising Nicole alone in Sacramento was life-defining for me and made me the person I am today. Nicole and I retain a special relationship,” says Monique. Nicole currently lives in Portland where she works as a successful pastry chef. Originally trained as an application developer, Monique worked for the California State Legislature for 15 years as a developer, project manager, and manager supporting the Assembly and Senate chambers, various committees and the folks who draft legislation for all their needs. She eventually figured out she was better at organizing and the big picture than coding and became a project manager, earning her PMP designation. She is currently the Senior IT Information Security Program Manager at Workday. “I really enjoy the culture and challenges that Workday provides. Every project is new and interesting, as it is a high growth atmosphere,” says Monique. Joe was born in Iowa, raised in Mississippi, and attended high school
and college in Texas. He earned both undergrad and graduate degrees in Finance from Texas A&M University. After working briefly in New York and Houston, he moved to California in 1995 to work for a boutique investment firm. When he and Monique married in 2003, they moved to Manhattan Beach briefly, but returned to the Bay Area when Joe began working at Silicon Valley Bank Asset Management as their Chief Investment Officer. After 10 years of commuting and traveling, Joe says he decided he wanted to be a greater part of his community and started his own financial planning firm, JWM Wealth Management, LLC. “This is my retirement job. I help people who want to live in the Tri-Valley area through retirement. This is a wonderful, though expensive place to live, and I’ve seen too many friends move away thinking it’s too expensive to live here, without ever really looking at the numbers.” Community involvement is a high priority for the Morgans. They are members of St. Isidore Catholic Church in Danville, and Joe says they both love playing tennis, “We play a lot of tennis at the club and Monique is currently captain of a 55+ 6.0 Women’s team going to the Sectional tournament in Sacramento. If they win there, the next step is Nationals in Orlando!” Monique also enjoys gardening and spends her spare time in the yard. Joe recently joined the San Ramon Valley Rotary Club, which meets Wednesday nights at Blackhawk Country Club. “It’s a great group of people who work hard to make the San Ramon Valley a better place to live, and I love being a part of that!” I enjoy learning about history

and trying to understand how history affects who we are today and the decisions we make. If you don’t understand your own perspective, you’ll never understand anyone else’s,” says Joe. In 2007, the Morgans traveled to Hawaii to participate in a marathon and raise money for the Leukemia and the Lymphoma Society. Monique has gone on to take part in two more half-marathon events and even got her daughter, Nicole, to walk the Alaska Summer Solstice half marathon with them. “We love traveling and have enjoyed trips to Italy and Japan. While in Italy, we hiked the towns of Cinque Terre. Though the ground was wet, Monique wore her flip-flops (against the
The Morgans live on Deer Trail Court and share their home with Lucy, their 9-year-old standard poodle. Both Joe and Monique say they love their neighbors and this community, “Everyone knows everyone and helps out. We enjoy neighborhood parties each year and love the privacy and calmness Blackhawk provides. The comfort of having the club nearby has been great, when we don’t feel like cooking or simply want to go some place friendly and familiar. We enjoy the occasional golf and bocce when tennis schedules allows. The best part of our club experience is all the great friends we have made. We can’t believe we actually considered moving to the city when we were both struggling with long commutes, so glad we joined the country club and decided to stay and get jobs closer to home.”

Charity Spotlight
Tucker Associates Real Estate Services partners with Globally Recognized Fashion Designer to Raise funds for local charities By Nicole Tucker, Resident Since 1997
S
ince the inception of Tucker Associates Real Estate Services in 2005, the group has always found a way to “give back” to those in need within our community. Whether a Tail Gate Fundraising Party, Clothes Drives, Golf Tournaments or Holiday Boutiques, they’ve found fun ways to help neighbors get involved with charitable giving. This year they’ve partnered with ‘Bridge the Gap Project’ and Amanda Betts, a New Zealand based, globally recognized nonprofit company that promotes up-cycled designer fashion clothing and auctions the item on-line in real time. For more information about the Bridge The Gap Project, The Heartspeak Collective and Amanda Betts, please visit www.bridgethegapproject.co.nz. Tucker Associates has made a handsome cash donation to commission ‘Bridge the Gap Project’ and fashion designer Amanda Betts to create one of kind jackets for friends, family and clients of Tucker Associates to bid on, in real time through a secure, web based live auction which lasts approximately 5 days. The audience gets real time updates on the bidding process. Participants can follow the item and increase their initial bid to win the jacket(s). The auction is a global event and open to any and all participants that desire the item with the goal to raise awareness and funds for the charitable organizations here locally. The jackets will be “theme”specific for each organization. The funds raised from the auction item will go directly to Shepherd’s Gate, Tri-Valley Animal Rescue (TVAR) and Horses Healing Hearts. The auction will ‘go live’ November, 2018. The jacket designs will be revealed, on line, in November, 2018. “Our goal is to raise money and awareness for our local charities. Conquer Electronic Clutter With In-Drawer Docking Stations By Jim Long, S&J Properties, General Contractor
C
hances are you’re reading this article on your laptop, tablet or phone. When you’re ready to charge that device, the cords will likely clutter up your desk, kitchen counter or nightstand and your overall design. But that doesn’t have to be the case. Homeowners are embracing docking stations. Before you join this growing trend, decide which kind of station you need: charging or powering. The in-drawer outlet is for charging devices such as wearable fitness trackers, phones and laptops. It has a builtin circuit breaker to prevent high-powered devices from being plugged in by mistake. (For those, you’d want a powering outlet.) Also remember to choose a charging outlet that has the right number of AC and USB outlets for your needs. If you have devices that generate heat, such as hair dryers and curling irons, or are powered by a motor, such as mixers and laser printers, install an in-drawer powering outlet. Select one with a built-in thermostat that detects heat and automatically shuts off if you accidentally leave something on. Consider the number of devices, think about how many devices your family uses. I would say the average family member charges four devices at one time including phones, tablets, fitness trackers and laptops. A 15-inch-wide charging drawer can usually accommodate as many as eight smaller devices at once. (An average cabinet drawer is 18 to 24 inches wide.) Look for a slim in-drawer outlet that doesn’t require much space and comes fully assembled. Many pieced-together DIY solutions take up a lot of drawer space and involve heavy modifications to the drawer box or cabinet, reducing the number of devices you can simultaneously charge or power. Decide on the right place for your in-drawer charging or powering station. Most homes have a landing zone, often in the kitchen, where family members set down their phones, keys, mail and more. A charging drawer can help keep this space organized. Think outside the kitchen too: Mudrooms, nightstands and home offices are other great places for in-drawer charging outlets. If you’re redoing an office and putting in cabinetry, adding this is a no-brainer. In-drawer powering outlets are commonly placed in bathrooms to help keep hair dryers, straighteners and curling irons in order. Select GFCI-protected outlets to keep you and your loved ones safe. These outlets are a must for kitchens, bathrooms and any other locations near a water source. Electrical components available in hardware stores usually aren’t designed for repeated movement such as opening and closing a drawer and can pose a safety risk. Most DIY outlets won’t pass inspection or carry the ETL Listed Mark, a respected independent safety designation.
Use drawer dividers to corral coiled cords, electronic accessories and gadgets in your charging drawers. Install canisters in various sizes to keep powering drawers organized. The challenge is figuring out how that drawer can multitask to maximize the space. Adding labels and sticking to them helps keep things tidy, as does making a habit of using the charging or powering station. Adjustable, removable dividers provide further flexibility to in-drawer charging stations. Organizing your devices and conquering tangled cords lets your home’s design shine. Armed with these tips, you’ll be able to create a reliable in-drawer charging or powering station that meets your needs and keeps clutter safely out of sight. If you are thinking of new remodeling ideas, getting the help from a qualified professional builder is worth the investment and long run value.

Wild Mushrooms and the Danger They Cause By Kristine Myhre, Blackhawk Veterinary Hospital
W
hile mushrooms may be delicious in a homecooked meal, wild mushrooms may be harmful to you or your pet. Although mushrooms grow year-round, wild mushrooms tend to thrive in the fall when it is moist and cool. They can often be found on or around the base of trees, decomposing leaves, fertilizer, mulch, soil, or compost and may blend with their surroundings making them difficult to spot. Keeping your pet away from wild mushrooms and removing any you might see growing in your yard or in areas where you typically walk with your pet is the best way to ensure your pet’s safety as ingestion can be detrimental. Signs of mushroom poisoning include vomiting, diarrhea, excessive drooling, watering eyes, slow heartbeat, lethargy, abdominal pain, jaundice, or seizures and can lead to kidney and liver failure, or death. If you think your pet may have ingested mushrooms, seek veterinary care immediately.

Yes to Music Education By Peggy Arman, The Dorris-Eaton School
Y
ou want to provide a wide variety of experiences for your children, but with their busy schedules and so many activities to choose from, which meaningful, worthwhile opportunities do you select? Seriously consider music lessons. There are so many benefits to music instruction that go beyond the sheer pleasure of creating music. The array of instruments to choose from means there is a match for almost every personality type. Although the expectation may not be to become the next Bono or Beethoven, with music education your children may discover that math and reading come more easily, that they are better at working with and understanding others, and that they become more self-disciplined. Singing and playing music requires memorizing melodies and lyrics, which helps with the development of short- and long-term memory. When students understand rhythm and beat, budding musicians are actually learning pattern recognition, how to divide, and how to create fractions. Exploring string and wind instruments also teaches children about physics: sound waves and harmonic vibrations. Studying music leads to lasting changes in the brain.
ensembles, saying yes to music education may possibly ensure your child a spot in the high school or university of choice.
Whether they are performing with musical instruments, in a choir, in a large or small group, musicians learn to listen to one another to harmonize, synchronize, and produce a pleasing sound. They know the importance of their role in the group as well as how they fit into the larger ensemble. Musicians work together to become a team. Collaborating to generate music improves their ability to listen. Music students hear the tone and emotions when someone speaks, which is important to understanding the person’s meaning and developing empathy. Since music increases interaction and cooperation, it helps children feel like they belong. Another valuable by-product of playing an instrument is developing perseverance, discipline, and patience. It takes hours of practice to sound like a “real musician. Your children will begin with the basics of how to hold the instrument, play initial chords and notes, practice scales to warm up, and put them all together until they get it right. Initially your ears will take a beating, but when your musicians take the feedback from music teachers and put the suggestions into action, you and they will see results. Being receptive to pointers and following up with focused practice is an important skill which can be transferred to other parts of life. Yes, there are only so many hours in the day. Yes, children have busy schedules. Yes, there are multiple extra-curricular opportunities out there. Chronic Pain Management By Dr. Asha Bajaj, Resident Since 1986
Pain serves a very important function in the body protecting us from potential harm and acting as an alarm to impending danger. However sometimes the pain continues to persist, even when the offending stimulus is removed and there is no active disease process. This is often the result of incomplete treatment after an acute injury such as an auto accident causing neck whiplash and/ or back problems. “Pain is an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage” as described by the International Association of Pain management. Early theories suggested pain was caused “by evil spirits,” but once neurons were discovered a theory called the Gate control theory of pain was proposed in the early 1960’s by Melzack and Wall. They suggested that there was a gating mechanism that either allowed the perception of pain or blocked it depending on which nerve fibers carried the message. Later in 1968 Ronald Melzack and Kenneth Casey described pain in terms of its three dimensions: “sensorydiscriminative” (sense of the intensity, location, quality and duration of the pain), “affective-motivational” (unpleasantness and urge to escape the unpleasantness), and “cognitive-evaluative” (cognitions such as appraisal, cultural values, distraction and hypnotic suggestion). They theorized that pain intensity (the sensory discriminative dimension) and unpleasantness (the affective-motivational dimension) are not simply determined by the magnitude of the painful stimulus, but “higher” cognitive activities can influence perceived intensity and unpleasantness. “Pain can be treated not only by trying to cut down the sensory input by anesthetic block, surgical intervention and the like, but also by influencing the motivational-affective and cognitive factors as well.”
There are many treatment approaches to chronic pain. These approaches include passive and active therapies, medications, behavioral-psychological treatments, and a host of other modalities, devices, and interventional techniques including surgery and other procedures. Medications, passive treatments, and invasive interventions alone are not always satisfactory without the additional use of other active rehabilitation and educational approaches that treat the whole person with chronic pain.
Please go to apta.org to learn more about pain management and getting your life back in control via non-invasive techniques, and avoid all the complications of relying solely on pain medication. Try and balance medications with other therapies to get the maximum pain relief and better functional ability. Don’t ignore the pain; Use medications wisely; find alternative therapies to manage the pain. Get moving walking, use assistive devices, get enough sleep, manage your mood and enjoy your life
In fact, rehabilitation through cognitive, behavioral, and physical reactivation treatments (also called functional restoration) often lessens the need for medications and other more invasive procedures. With our current opioid crisis more people are turning to physical therapy, behavior modification and biofeedback to increase their repertoire of pain management tools. Exercise is the best opioid available to us, but the type and intensity of exercise needs to be prescribed by a trained physical therapist.

The Big Investing Lie By Joe Morgan, JWM Wealth Management, Resident Since 2004
T
here is a big lie that investment advisors will tell you: that volatility can be defeated.
This falsehood betrays you into paying extraordinary fees for complex products that don’t work and that you don’t need in the first place. Because you have developed a financial plan that includes investing only for the long run, meaning you won’t be using those funds bouncing around in the markets for many years into the future, temporary declines have no power to harm you. And if you’ve constructed a well-diversified, broadly invested portfolio that is rebalanced on a regular basis, all declines are temporary.
Your knowledge that this is the way it works is the groundwork for your superior temperament during these times.
The hard truth is that, while stock market returns outpace inflation over time, they must be earned. Earned by investing only long-term money. Earned by having the will to stay invested, or even ramp up your investment pace, when the markets crash and everyone is saying the world is ending.

Charity Spotlight
A Call for Help and a Generous Community Responds By Jerry Nowicki, Blackhawk Resident Since 1987
T
he Gulf war has taken a toll on the lives of many of our military and their families. The need goes well beyond the resources of our Veterans administration and the many governmental support agencies. The burden of serving those needs fall upon the many volunteer organizations spread across America. One such organization is the Folds of Honor, which is a charity that helps the families of our fallen heroes who gave their lives for our precious freedoms. The PGA sponsors Folds of Honor. In early 2011, Tim Burr, the Director of Golf at Blackhawk Country Club approached Jerry Nowicki of the Blackhawk Senior Golf Association (SGA) for some help in raising money for this cause. The senior organization embraced the project in a big way and

decided to conduct a gate collection to get more publicity and wider community reach. In that first year, 24 volunteers from the SGA manned the gates on a very hot September day and raised $26,500. The following year the Seniors broadened the project and wanted to expand the donations in support the local veteran’s charities in the Bay Area. They selected the Sentinels of Freedom based in San Ramon and Troops Direct located here in Danville. The Seniors also broadened the community support and solicited the Blackhawk Home Owners Association, who passed out flyers at the gates, and the Blackhawk Country Club to deliver donation cards to every home as well as pass them out in the dining rooms during the month of September in an all-out effort to get the word out. The second year $36,000 was collected, but an awareness was built in the Blackhawk community and this led to expanded donations. Norm Prickett of the Senior organization took on the Chairmanship of Patriot’s day in 2015 and through his efforts our generous community responded in kind. We are proud to report to date our community has contributed almost $500,000. These funds have helped the Sentinels of Freedom to assist a number of our most seriously wounded to live a more normal life by providing financial assistance through housing subsidies, educational subsidies and even help with finding them employment on the path to establishing a productive life free from dependency on the welfare system. Troops Direct, another local charity, has provided back line support for our veterans engaged in combat operations and has shipped over 3 million pounds of supply items to date to support their daily needs with items in short supply on the battlefield. Folds of Honor provides scholarship assistance to the families of our fallen and disabled veterans to supplement very minimal assistance programs provided by the government. To date the organization has helped many of the 1.4 million dependents of these brave patriots.

Patriots Day brings into focus the needs of our fallen and wounded veterans. It also demonstrates the power of volunteerism by many SGA members ranging in age from 50 to 97, and, most importantly, it brings out the generosity of a very giving community who answers in a big way every year on Patriots day. They are truly our Blackhawk Patriots. BLACKHAWK LIVING 21

Happy Holiday Season from Atlantis Pools By Jon Lubrano, President, Atlantis Pools Inc.
I
thought it might be nice to take a break from writing about pools this month to wish everyone a very happy holiday season from all of us at Atlantis Pools. This time of year can be especially hectic and busy for many of us, which makes it the perfect time to focus on gratitude and kindness. If there is one thing I know for sure, it’s that expressing kindness to as many people as possible, will change your life for the better. Whether it be a sincere “thank you” or a smile, holding a door open for someone or writing a thank you note, let’s all pass along kindness this month without expecting anything in return. No matter who you are, be good to people. It will make someone’s day. Take time for gratitude this holiday season. We are blessed to live in Danville and have so much to be thankful for. From the big things like where we live to the small things like a smile from a neighbor, be thankful for it all.
Chaos is all around us, in that chaos – be kind. Give. Love. Honor. Cherish and show kindness. Life will get better. Make someone’s day – it will change your life. Small acts of gratitude and kindness on a daily basis are what make us who we are. Let’s be great, be kind, be loving and be helpful this holiday season and all yearlong. I wish all of you happy holidays and the best 2019 that can be imagined.

Chinese Fondue In Dublin, California By Mike L. McColgan, Resident Since 1990
I
n an effort to dine at all 3000 San Francisco restaurants and visit all 600 Napa wineries, my wife Linda and I recently traveled to nearby Dublin, Ca. We enjoyed a unique foodie experience at Little Sheep Mongolian Hot Pot Restaurant, recommended by a golfing friend, that is close to our home stomping ground. Hot Pot is also known as “fire pot or Chinese Fondue” invented by Genghis Khan. It is a colorful array of fresh ingredients, low in fat, sodium and calories and served in a fun and lively atmosphere. It is a great experience for friends and any family or a business gathering. The service staff is also very attentive and helpful in deciding what to cook. Hot Pot 101 Instructions are as follows: Step 1. Choose your favorite soup base original, spicy or half and half. We chose the half and half. Step 2. Pick your favorite meats, seafood, greens, noodles, and mushrooms. We chose the assorted meats(beef, chicken, and lamb), shrimp meat balls, Napa cabbage and fresh noodles. Step 3. Cook the raw food in your pot in the center of your table and enjoy the heavenly smell and sensational perfectly seasoned soup.
Helping families who want clarity in their financial lives. As a fiduciary at all times, I… ...provide clarity and peace to families regarding their financial lives
Step 4. After dinner, savor one of the fresh desserts served with steaming hot tea. We enjoyed the freshly made Phoenix Yolk buns that were angel wing light and very tasty.
...serve families who have never worked with an advisor before, but are now facing one of life’s stressful transitions
After your fresh and very healthy feast, you are supplied with plastic containers to take home the leftovers for another great meal. We took our soup home, warmed it up in our crock pot and enjoyed a second “hot pot” experience.
My firm exists because financial stress is far too high for the average person. A little education combined with some strategy and a lifetime of coaching provides the confidence that allow our clients to live out their years with peace, dignity, and independence.
In conclusion, we would highly recommend Little Sheep Hot Pot in Dublin, Ca. for fresh food that is healthy and fun. For more information and to make reservations go to:

Reverse Mortgages..
Good or Bad?
By Steve Cline, Preferred Financial
R
everse mortgages have been around for over 60 years and have long been the subject of much criticism and controversy. From the early 60’s to the early 80’s, these mortgages were made available through a few Savings & Loan Associations and some “rogue” lenders. There was zero standardization of the product, allowing lenders to create their own terms and conditions, most of which favored themselves at the expense of the borrowers. The government got involved in 1983 when the Senate gave approval to have reverse mortgages insured by the Federal Housing Administration (FHA). The first few FHA-insured Home Equity Conversion Mortgages (HECM, commonly referred to as Reverse Mortgages) were issued by 1990. Since then, the government has orchestrated a variety of changes and embellishments to the product, resulting in what is today a very valuable financial planning tool for our aging population. Nowadays, more lenders are offering the government-insured HECM more competitively than ever. Some current features include:
• • • •
cash out as a lump sum at settlement as an annuity, with regular cash payments as a line of credit, similar to a HELOC a combination of any of the above
The reverse mortgage is a very complicated mortgage product and is certainly not appropriate for everyone. Careful consideration is paramount in deciding if it is a good or bad loan for individuals. If you would like more information, feel free to contact me here at Preferred Financial where “we listen, we educate, and then perform like no one else in the industry.”

Message from the Blackhawk Police Department
Blackhawk Community Safety Day By Blackhawk Police Chief Ian Hebert
T
hank you to the Blackhawk Community for joining us on our second annual safety event on Saturday, October 6th at the Blackhawk Sports Field. It was fun to see how excited the kids were to learn about the SWAT Bearcat armored truck, the Hostage Negotiation Team Mobile Command Vehicle, and the equipment the Search and Rescue team uses to save lives. The HOA provided food and refreshments. One of the highlights of the event was the police K9 demonstration when the crowd saw Ronnie take down a “bad guy in a bite suit. Blackhawk Clothing Drive The third annual Blackhawk Clothing Drive will be this month at the Blackhawk Main Gate. Please bring clean, gently used clothing to donate. If you can separate it into bags for men, women, and children clothing it would be very helpful to us. The clothing is donated to three Contra Costa County homeless shelters. Last year we collected over 80 large industrial size garbage bags full of clothing.

Book Boot Camp
November Book Review Book Boot Camp with Flola Tam, Resident Since 2004 The Dogs and The Wolves A friend recently recommended this book to me, The Dogs and The Wolves. In this novel, the author, Irene Nemirovsky, draws upon her own experiences as an upper class Jewish member during the Holocaust. The story begins with the main character, Ada, who comes from a poor Jewish family in Russia. She grows up in a small town that surrounds a hill, where society is literally and metaphorically divided into a hierarchy. The rich Jewish families reside at the top of the hill, while the Jewish ghettos are built at the base. Ada and her cousin Ben are, ironically, distantly related to the richest family in town, whom can afford to bribe government officials into letting them live comfortably. The plot takes off when pogroms, organized massacre of ethnic groups, begin the hunt for Jews in Russia. Ada and Ben flee to Paris where they attempt to return to normalcy by settling down together. Things don’t go well for the two of them, as one rekindles an old flame from Russia, and the other strives only towards financial success.
question of how dogs and wolves, despite coming from the same background, can live such different lifestyles. Besides the underlying themes on antisemitism and social hierarchies, the author also highlights very raw human emotions of falling in love and financial goals through Ada and Ben. I found this book to be a very refreshing and original perspective on antisemitism in countries outside of Germany. Flola Tam My interest in reading sparked sometime in Elementary school. Teachers at the time assigned books as projects or were read as a class time activity. I got addicted right away, and began reading ahead of the assigned pages. I will be making a book recommendation and a brief summary and review of its contents, in hopes of reintroducing a passion for reading to the community.
This story was unique in the way it depicted the sharp contrast between rich and poor Jewish families. It alludes to the

Happy Thanksgiving By Linda Kralik, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices, Resident Since 1984

C
an you believe it? Halloween is over and we are in the month of Thanksgiving. Where did the year go? Well, now is the time to begin planning for 2019! Yes, if you are thinking of buying or selling a home next year, you need to begin planning now. If buying a home in the near future is your priority, get out now and see the neighborhoods that excite you. Know the streets you prefer or the school districts where you want your children to attend school. If there is a specific floor plan or design in a community you desire, do some “drive-bys” and be aware of those addresses for future reference. See if you can have your realtor provide a set of recent sales within the past three to six months to determine estimated pricing of a home in that neighborhood. This can also indicate whether the market is moving up or down. Knowledge is everything in real estate, so prepare as much as you can. When you are ready to buy you will have the inside track and possibly make the best offer for your new home. If you are looking to sell, you must begin now in preparation for the coming new sales year! In our area, I have always suggested Valentine’s Day as the target for putting a home on the MLS (Multiple Listing Service). That is just about the time when buyers come out of the cocoon of winter and begin looking for homes. Also, this is a terrific time to catch those re-location buyers who might be making their first “location trip” to see about housing. It is the time for spring, and pretty flowers, and trees leafing out, and an overall joy that winter is over. Truly the best time to sell. In preparing for that day you can use the gloomy days of winter to clean out the unwanted items inside our home. Begin minimizing your personal items. It is best to package and store any and all small collectibles. This prevents breakage as well loss. Box your book collections and move and store these boxes to a corner of the garage. Look around, or have someone else come in and look around, and see what else can be done to make the home more sale-able. Your Friendly Neighborhood Realtor is always a good choice to help you see what is needed and what could be stored. Plan early, plan ahead…… So, here is wishing you, and everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving for there is really so much to be thankful for. Give your sons and daughters, your mothers and fathers, your nephews and nieces you love to pieces, give them a kiss and hug and tell how thankful you are for their love.

What to Know About Oral-Facial Sports Injuries By Richard Anthony, DDS MS
O
ral-facial injuries can have significant negative functional, aesthetic, and psychological effects both on children and adults. A study on consumer products and activities associated with dental injuries to children treated in United States emergency rooms from 1990-2007 indicated that an average of 22,000 dental injuries annually occurred among children less than 18 years of age. Over half of the injuries involving primary (baby) teeth of children under the age of 7 were from accidents with household furniture. For children between the ages of 7 to 12 years, most of the oral-facial injuries occurred during outdoor activities— over half of these involved bicycles. Older children of age 13-17 primary had oral-facial injuries during sports activities. For this group, the most prevalent injury occurrence was during baseball and basketball. The person least likely to be present when a sports injury occurs is a dentist. What should athletes, parents, trainers, coaches, and care providers know about oral/facial sports injuries and their
prevention? Fortunately, there is an excellent reference titled “The Field-Side Guide to Dental Injuries” by Drs. David J. Kenny & Michael J. Casas that provides practical guidance. Most sports-related dental injuries can be classified into three broad categories resulting from impacts to the soft tissues, the jaws, and the teeth themselves. Also, more specifically, dental injuries can be categorized into treatment needs as follows:

Immediate – Within 5 minutes: A tooth completely avulsed (knocked out of socket) requires treatment immediately to have any chance of saving the tooth long term. Urgent Within 6 hours: When a tooth is still in the mouth but has been moved, either in or out, or to one side or the other, this is considered an acute injury. Less Urgent – Within 12 hours: Injuries in which the teeth are broken or chipped but not bodily moved from their original position. Of course the first line of defense is accomplished by the consistent use of an appropriate mouth guard during recreational and sports activities that pose a risk to dental injuries. In any event, a call to your dentist, oral surgeon, pediatric dentist, or orthodontist relating the exact nature of the injury or trauma to the teeth will result in a decision regarding what needs to be done and just how urgently appropriate care is needed.

Monte Vista High School
High School KaleidoscopeThe New School Year So Far By Ananya Lamba, Junior Reporter
S
ummer has ended, leaving me with memories, life lessons, and friendships that will last a lifetime. I went to Costa Rica, Mexico, Boston, New Jersey, and New York. The most important trip I went on was Costa Rica. I went with a student traveling group, so I got to share my experience with several other high school students. I will never forget the days I spent relaxing on the beach, exploring the outdoors, learning about Tico culture, or the looks on the childrens’ faces after helping rebuild their community center. I have learned to enjoy life and not take everything for granted, for there are other places in the world where people are happy with the simplest of things. Materialistic things are never as important as the experiences you will have throughout your life. Most importantly, I created friendships during that trip that will last a lifetime, with pieces of my heart scattered throughout the United States and Canada. After coming back from Costa Rica, my family and I were off to Mexico, where we spent valuable time together and relaxed on the beautiful beaches of Cabo San Lucas. In New York and New Jersey, I connected with old family and friends after three years. We shared laughs, caught up with each other, and made more memories together. I love every single person there with all my heart, and I cannot wait to see them again. Boston was another important trip, for I went with my synchronized skating team, the Dublin Dolls and Dazzlers. We competed at ISI World’s competition, where we won first place in all four of our events. Another exciting event that took place over the summer was when my cousins visited from Canada for a week. We showed them around California, taking them to Yosemite, San Francisco, and around the bay area. This summer held plenty of unforgettable experiences, where I reconnected with loved ones, made new friends, embarked on exciting adventures, and saw new places.
Roaming the streets of the New York City
The beautiful Mirror Lake in Yosemite National Park.
The end of summer also brings the first day of school. The first day of school always comes with jitters, but it is also the beginning of new friendships and knowledge. On the first day of school, everyone got to know their new teachers and classmates. We attended our back to school rally where we got to watch our talented cheerleaders perform. We also listened to our amazing drum line. School rallies always unify students of all grades to celebrate our school spirit. The school also hosted a back to school dance, which was a very fun way to kick off the year. I danced for hours on end with my friends. Now I am looking forward to Halloween and the homecoming dance! I am very excited to see where this year will take me, for who knows what this year holds…

Her team takes her and her family across the country for competitions, where she has won many awards.

Flowers of Hawaii By Sonia Lamba, Resident Since 2015
Hey, wait! “What’s that flower?”
Bird of Paradise resembles a brightly colored bird in flight and is a favorite in tropical arrangements
Click Click Click ! As an island visitor, there’s been a couple of times when I stopped in my tracks to click photos on the gorgeous Kalakaua Avenue in Waikiki, delighted by the beauty of its flowers...the majority of these grow nowhere in the world but Hawaii...reason enough for me to make an annual trip to Hawaii. With its excellent climate and varied terrain, Hawaii has become a gathering place for flowering plants from all over the world. From my recent October visit, my pick for this column are the most splendid, most curious, most royal, most common and most exotic beauties: Hawaii’s official state flower yellow Hibiscus, Shampoo Ginger, Queen Emma Lily, Plumeria and Bird of Paradise or Crane Lily.
I am back in Blackhawk but still miss the romance and tropical beauty of Hawaiian flowers. I can’t wait to find similar captivating radiance here.
Plumeria grows everywhere in Hawaii and is the most popular of lei flowers
Shampoo Ginger or Awapuhi is a commom sight and Hawaiians used this aromatic plant to make shampoo
Sonia Lamba As an amateur photographer, I have always loved taking beautiful photos of my friends and family, nature and travels. After having a fulfilling career in finance in New York, I moved to California in 2014 where my love for photography turned into an invigorating passion. The mountains, valleys, flowers, water and parks never looked so captivating before. I look for vibrant colors and different shades of life. I love capturing anything that intrigues and inspires me. Moving to gorgeous Blackhawk has further enriched and blossomed my love for the camera. I take my camera everywhere, regardless of how short the distance is. Knowing me, there is always a photo opportunity!

With Holiday Proposal Season Upon Us, Here’s our Guide on How Much one Should Spend on an Engagement Ring? By Steve Padis, Steve Padis Jewelry, Resident Since 1989
Congratulations are in order. You’ve found the one you want to marry! Exciting times are ahead. But first, the ring…
A
t Padis Jewelry, we have the finest selection of exceptional engagement rings the Bay Area has to offer. We’re experts at helping you find a ring that fits your taste and lifestyle. But before you get to the fun part of shopping, it’s important to know how much you want to spend on an engagement ring. No complex budget calculators or myth-busting theories. We keep it simple when it comes to deciding how much you should spend on an engagement ring. All you need is a little guidance.
looks like, it doesn’t mean you have to spend less on a ring. In fact, knowing your numbers gives you the freedom to spend what you want with confidence.
How much should I spend on an engagement ring? Some might argue that this question is as important as that big one you’re about to ask. You know, the one that starts with “Will you?” and ends with “I do.” But we like to keep it simple for you. No complex budget calculators or myth-busting theories. You have an engagement to plan, so let’s get to it. Here are some simple dos and don’ts for you.
Do Save Up Nothing delights us more than when someone comes in and tells us how they’ve been saving up for months to buy an engagement ring. What a special story to share with future children and grandchildren. Sorry, we’re getting carried away... But really, start saving now if you know she’s the one. Then, instead of asking, “How much can I spend?” you’ll be saying, “Look how much I can spend!”
Keep An Open Mind You may have heard the general rule that you should spend at least two months of your yearly salary on a ring. Some companies say this is an archaic approach, but for something as tried and true as an engagement, we say don’t change what works. The two-month rule is a great place to start, and it’s the straightforward way to go if you want the no-fuss answer. This comes with a caveat, though. You know your future fiancé better than anyone. Forcing a ring to fit into this budget is not advised. Chances are you’ll fall in love with a ring just as you fell in love with her. Keep an open mind if you end up spending over (or under!) that two-month rule.
Don’t Go into Debt As much as we know you want to wow your girl, we don’t advise anyone go into debt when buying an engagement ring. This one is simple. Don’t do it.
If you’re ready to shop for an engagement ring, we can’t wait to help you find the ring of her dreams. Our non-commissioned diamond experts are ready to guide you to the perfect choice! Get started by scheduling a visit to the Padis Jewelry showroom at concierge@padisjewelry.com.
Do Know Your Numbers For those who don’t want to be boxed into a budget when shopping for a ring, simply knowing your numbers will help you feel confident in your purchase. Think about it. You’re going to be a husband soon. This is not the time to spend and pray. You should have a solid grip on your personal finances, especially before you go ring shopping. Know things like: • Do I have an emergency fund saved? • How much debt do I have? If any. • Do I have any large purchases planned in the next year? After you sit down and review your numbers, ask yourself, “Can I really afford this?” When you know what your financial landscape 34
