Resident Feature

Meet the Hunter Ashley Family: Music, Medicine and Ministry By Megan Scott, Resident since 2010

J

ohn and Elizabeth’s first time meeting could be called a Christmas miracle. It was Christmas day, Elizabeth and her then 8-year-old son, Jack, were flying to visit family. John says he noticed Elizabeth before ever boarding the plane, “I remember thinking ‘I never sit next to anyone that attractive,’ then after sitting in my aisle seat, I looked up to see Elizabeth and Jack, waiting to sit in the seats next to me.” Jack and John soon struck up a conversation, which continued between all three for the next 90 minutes. Before they landed, John had asked for Elizabeth’s phone number and made arrangements to see her perform the lead role in a regional musical and take her to dinner. Ten months later they were engaged and shortly after that…married. As a child, you could always find Elizabeth on stage. She was born in Nebraska, and her family moved to Minnesota as she began 4th grade. She spent her youth dancing and singing. “From a young age, I knew that I would spend my life giving my musical gifts to others, hoping to make a difference, and serving God,” says Elizabeth. She earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Vocal Performance from the University of Kansas and the University of Nebraska Omaha, respectively. During college, after winning Miss Austin 1984, Elizabeth entered and won the title of Miss Minnesota 1985. She then competed in the Miss America Scholarship Pageant. Following graduation, Elizabeth became a flight attendant with Delta Airlines. While flying she continued performing as a

soloist at Opera Omaha, the Heartland Opera Theatre and with orchestras in Chicago, Nebraska, Minnesota, and Austria. Elizabeth has received many honors, including three Shelley Award nominations and winner of both NATS and Concerto Competitions. As a recording artist, she donates the majority of her profits to numerous charities. Elizabeth is the proprietor of “The Performance Studio” which is in its 20th year. She is passionate in her efforts to share her knowledge, sustainable vocal technique, and performance insight with her students. Elizabeth teaches Classical, Broadway, Pop, Oratorio, and Opera. “The Performance Studio” outreaches to the community with bi-annual recitals, which also serve as fundraising events for charities that are selected by the students. Elizabeth was recently awarded the 2018 “Best Vocal Instructor” Award from the Danville, CA Award Program. Currently she is a soloist and member in the distinguished Blackhawk Chorus. Elizabeth also continues as a featured soloist in concert and with orchestras throughout the U.S., France and Italy. John was born in Canada and raised in Northern Maine. He moved with his mother and four siblings to Colorado Springs at the age of 8, after his father’s untimely death in a jet fire while flying for the Air National Guard. John attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mechanical engineering. He moved to the

Bay Area in 1990 to help his mother with health issues, and began his career at Abbott Laboratories in Mountain View working on new critical care technology. John loves applying his education to the medical field and has developed and commercialized new medical devices in over a dozen small start-ups in the last 25 years. He enjoys both inventing new products to help patients and building companies to bring those technologies to hospitals worldwide. John has been granted over 100 medical technology patents. He is currently the CEO of both ReValve Med developing 3rd generation aortic valve replacements and ResonanceDx developing a point of care diagnostic test to distinguish between viral and bacterial infections. John shares Elizabeth’s love of music. He performed as a drummer through out childhood. In the last 20 years he has focused on hand percussion, specifically frame drums. He has performed in frame drum ensembles throughout the Bay Area, in Michigan, and in several temples and pyramids in Egypt. John, Elizabeth, Jack and Noah all enjoy spending time together traveling, golfing, skiing, swimming, entertaining, dancing, and doing charity work. They are members of Peace Lutheran Church in Danville where Elizabeth is the choir director and John, Jack and Noah often drum. Elizabeth is a co-founder of the Pure Delight Foundation as well as a 31 year APRIL 2019

active member and past chapter president of P.E.O. Elizabeth performs for numerous charitable fundraisers annually. She is also an adjudicator for CMEA and local vocal competitions. John gives back as a mentor with MIT’s Bay Area Venture Mentoring group to assist start-up companies, an advisor to the Surgical Innovations Group at UCSF to translate medical technologies into startup companies, and on the industry advisory board for the Department of Bioengineering at the University of the Pacific. He has also served on the House and the Food and Beverage committees at Blackhawk Country Club, as well as coaching for Mustang Soccer. Elizabeth’s son and John’s step son, Jack, is currently a sophomore at the University of North Dakota where he is pursuing an Aerospace Aviation degree. Jack graduated from Monte Vista High School in 2017 where he was a member of the concert choir that toured Europe, is an accomplished USA year-round swimmer, and an Eagle Scout. Jack’s was recruited from the Sycamore Stingrays to the HOX which precipitated

first the Hunter Ashley’s joining Blackhawk Country Club in 2012 and then moving to the community in 2014. Jack’s Eagle Scout project was collecting and shipping soccer equipment to South Africa, and he has continued this biennial charitable work for the last 6 years. John and Elizabeth’s son, Noah, is in second grade at Tassajara Hills Elementary School. He enjoys singing with the San Francisco Boys Chorus, playing Mustang Soccer, Little League baseball, Cub Scouts and swimming. The thread of family philanthropy has recently touched Noah who earlier this year raised enough money on his own to buy two children wheelchairs through the Wheel Chair Foundation. The Hunter Ashley family is rounded out by their American Eskimo dog, 6-yearold Frostina, a calico cat, 5-year-old Autumn Hope, and 2 PBR bucking bulls, “Blonde Blizzard” and “Noa-Jack.” John, Elizabeth, Jack and Noah all enjoy playing golf, swimming, bocce and the many other activities that Blackhawk provides.

#writing is a lost art By Peggy Arman, The Dorris-Eaton School

I

s our hashtag and texting culture of brevity contributing to the decline in our students’ ability to write well? While efficient methods of expression, they are essentially utilitarian and somewhat superficial. A well-written paragraph, essay, or presentation requires thought, deliberation, and revision. It’s a skill that is developed over time with the assistance of teachers adept at providing guidance and feedback. Texting is easier and takes less time and energy, but that’s not the skill employers seek. Being a competent writer is the expertise that is valued. Clear, coherent writing distinguishes one person from others. It can even be the reason one student is selected to take the last seat of a popular college class. A college freshman from the East Bay attending the University of Virginia wanted to enroll in an upper division English course, where the policy was to give priority to upper classmen. At the end of the first English class meeting, it was announced that one

more student would be allowed to enroll. Several freshmen and sophomores stood in line to plead their case to the professor, detailing why they should be the one person added to the class over the others vying for the spot. To make the determination, the professor had each student write a response to the prompt: What is home? Submitting a well-written, five-paragraph essay resulted in the East Bay freshmen being the student to land the one spot. When the professor asked how she had learned to write so well, she said she had learned and honed her writing skills during her tenure at The Dorris-Eaton School.

Spring Staycation By Chelsea Scott

We’d all love to pack up the kids and head somewhere for spring break or a spring vacation. However, that’s not always possible. If going somewhere tropical, exotic or new isn’t in the cards this spring, here are a few family-friendly ideas you can do without leaving town. Plan a State Park Visit Whether you live in a warm climate, somewhere that could get an April blizzard or anywhere in between, visiting a state park near you is always a great staycation idea. Admittance fees are usually low (or free), and there is plenty to do year round. Depending on the area, you and your family could partake in beaches, fishing, nature/education centers, horseback riding, birding, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing or hiking. You could easily spend a few days exploring and still not do/see everything. Cook Ethnic Cuisine When my sister and I were kids, we used to love going to the library. One of our favorite sections was the one with all the cookbooks. We seemed to be drawn to those that offered recipes and colorful pictures of ethnic cuisine. Select a cuisine

So‌Just What Are the Benefits of Orthodontic Treatment? By Richard Anthony, DDS MS – Blackhawk Orthodontics

I

t depends on the patient. From both my personal experience as a clinical orthodontic practitioner and as revealed in years of dental research literature, the perceived benefit of orthodontic therapy varies considerably between each individual patient. Overall, these benefits fall into either physiological or psychological categories. The physiological benefits are associated with the orthodontic treatment to help improve the stability, function, and health of both the teeth and associated oral anatomical structures. Otherwise-if left untreated--a poor bite and orthodontic problems could become worse over time, causing people to be at higher risk for abnormal tooth wear, difficulty in chewing, increased tooth decay, and gum disease. Psychological orthodontic benefits pertain to how an individual’s self-esteem and confidence can be increased by the orthodontic correction of an unsightly set of teeth or facial appearance which caused a person to be overly self-conscious. A child with crooked teeth will be teased by his or her peers and that may affect their psychological and social development. Even for

adults, a poor set of teeth may be perceived by others to be due to poor personal hygiene and sloppiness. In order for a current or prospective orthodontic patient to gain the most benefit from their orthodontic treatment, I have two pieces of advice. First, let your needs be known so that the orthodontic benefits can be specifically tailored to satisfy the needs most important to you; and secondly, seek an experienced orthodontist that is willing to listen to your needs and is capable enough to deliver the benefits.

Top 5 Tips to Update Your “Not so New Home By Sheeja Nair, Interior designer, Raashi Design, LLC

Y

ou’ve been staring at the same drab living room for many years. You’re tired of its look, but a complete re-do is too expensive. Well, look no further for some budget-friendly tips. 1. Painting – Painting the walls and cabinetry is an inexpensive way to update the look and feel of your spaces - just ensure the overall color scheme works. A fresh new color for your front door can increase curb appeal. 2. Replace dated fixtures – Replacing outdated light fixtures, faucets, cabinet hardware, switches and outlet plates can add function and style. 3. Architectural details – If not a big statement ceiling, adding crown molding, wall paneling or wainscoting in the common spaces can make the space look upscale. Adding a backsplash can transform your kitchen. 4. Details – Details really matter when it comes to design. Something as simple as changing the throw pillows on your sofa or floor rugs can refresh the space.

5. Artwork & Accessories – Adding or replacing artwork and accessories can help creating a cohesive look and change the feel of the room.

Fannie vs. Freddie –The Battle of the Agencies By Steve Cline, Preferred Financial

F

annie Mae and Freddie Mac are government-sponsored agencies that purchase mortgages on the secondary market. In doing so, they create liquidity and enable lenders to offer myriad mortgage products to borrowers. The 30-year fixed rate loan product in particular provides homeowners with stable, predictable mortgage payments for the life of the loan and remains the most popular product choice of homeowners. While the various loan programs’ parameters are interchangeable, there are a few factors that will have a significant impact on the final interest rate. Examples: • • • • •

Loan-to-value (LTV) and Cash-out Options Primary / 2nd home Freddie goes to 80% LTV on a 3-4 unit property. Fannie’s max LTV is 75%. Investment Freddie goes to 85% LTV on rate/term refinances. Fannie’s max LTV is 75%...a HUGE difference.

Underwriting differences: • Freddie has no maximum debt-to-income (DTI) ratio. • Fannie’s max DTI is 50%, making Freddie the more flexible option. • On open-end credit accounts (debts showing on your credit report that must be paid in full monthly), Freddie uses 5% of the balance as payment. • Fannie requires that funds be available to pay in full. • Freddie requires alimony payments to be shown as debt. Fannie allows alimony that the borrower owes to either be treated as debt OR to be subtracted from gross income. This difference may be of great help in making a debt-to-income ratio work. More than 45 factors like these differentiate the two entities. We at Preferred Financial always look at every possible enhancement that will benefit our clients. Feel free to contact me with your mortgage-related scenarios.

FIRST PETS FOR KIDS By Chelsea Scott

You knew the day would come: your child wants a cat. A dog. A pony. Worst-case scenarios and dollar signs flash before your eyes as you try to explain to your child that they are too young or too irresponsible to have a pet. Let’s pump the brakes and brainstorm here. There are plenty of low-maintenance pets that are suitable for families with kids and cost much less than a dog or cat. Gecko Yes, like the car insurance commercial. These small lizards are docile, easy to care for and generally live a long time. They make a kid-friendly pet due to their easy-going nature and willingness to be held. Canary Small and fun to watch, all canaries really need is a cage, food and water and a few toys. Your child could be responsible for cleaning the cage, feeding or watering.

Hamster Like the canary, a hamster can be happy in their comfortable cage with just food and water. Don’t forget the wheel! These cute rodents are goodtempered and don’t require more than a few minutes of handling per day. Betta Fish Betta fish are colorful and easy to care for since they only require a small bowl with no filter. Kids will enjoy picking out decorations for the bowl and watching the betta swim around. If taken care of, betta fish can live two or three years. Stick with a single betta: two or more will fight. Rabbit Rabbits are social and gentle and can be a great first pet with appropriate adult supervision. They can live to be about 10 years old and trained to use a litter box. Ultimately, you will decide whether to bring a pet into your home, when, and how much supervision your pet (and child) need. Even a small pet is a big responsibility. No matter what you choose, it will be the right decision for your family. Sources consulted: www.kids.nationalgeographic.com, www.parents.com

Choose a Job You Love, and You Will Never Work a Day in Your Life By Jon Lubrano, President, Atlantis Pools Inc.

E

arly on when I first started working in the Pool business, I was very fortunate to have a few mentors who shared their extensive pool knowledge with me. As I worked for various pool companies, I made mental note of the business practices I liked and wanted to replicate, and things I would never do when I had my own company.

Since starting my business several decades ago, we have striven to be the pros in the field of pool service and repairs. We are known for taking jobs and fixing broken pools that other companies turn down and won’t touch. Other pool companies hire us to do their repairs. We are proud of all we have accomplished; yet humble and filled with gratitude to our customers for letting us serve you.

When I started my company, my top two priorities were to provide the best service for my customers and hiring the best people who had a passion for making repairs and providing a great service.

Servicing and repairing your pools, has allowed me to provide for my family, pay for my son’s college education, and now my business is giving a new generation the ability to provide for their families. Most of my staff has young children, and I hope that they will be able to send their children to college as I have.

My motto has always been treat others as you would want to be treated, and that goes towards my customers and staff. We are not perfect, but we try our hardest to provide the best experience possible and we work very hard to make sure we are extremely knowledgeable and excel at what we do. In an industry where there are multiple safety hazards on every job, the most important rule is safety first for our customers and our staff. I hold my staff to very high standards, as we know our customers expect the best from us.

My life has surpassed my dreams, and I am truly grateful. I am no Bill Gates or Elon Musk, but my life has made a difference in my community. It may be a small piece of the American dream, but it is a piece of it. Here at Atlantis we love what we do and we hope it shows. We thank our customers and hope that we will serve you for many years to come.

“We listen, we educate, then we perform like no one else in the industry.” We provide home financing services, including Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, jumbo and portfolio home mortgage products. We are a family owned business since 1979, when we pioneered the zero cost loan.

Health and Wellness

Wellness= Mind-Body-Spirit-Gratitude By Dr. Asha Bajaj, Resident Since 1986

W

ell-being is a healthy balance between mind, body, spirit and environment. It requires you to nourish your body through a good diet, eat real food; exercise -walk stretch yoga, gym, tennis, just get moving! Try and get good quality sleep – turn off screens an hour before bedtime, practice mindfulness via meditation, prayer and expressing a daily sense of gratitude. Keep your mind active-read, write, and solve problems. Feed your spirit- socialize, listen to music, volunteer service, art, creative writing and express your gratitude-list the things you are grateful for in your life and see it harness the power of the mind. Power of the Mind. The mind has the power to make you heal ; if you think something is going to work for you, it’s called the “Placebo effect.” In contrast, if you think a certain therapy is not going to help, it will not work creating the “Nocebo effect.” In studies using the same drug on one group and a sugar pill in the other group, both groups experienced similar effects. The ‘sugar pill” group believed that what they were getting was a miracle drug; it produced healing and relief due to the placebo effect. On the other hand, if they believed they had no cure left, even the highest dose of the drug failed to produce a positive result, resulting in a nocebo effect. Studies confirmed that placebo produces dopamine and the body’s natural pain killers, it recruits the parasympathetic or relaxation response. Nocebo effect inhibits internal pain killer, recruits the sympathetic system, increasing cortisol and stress hormone levels. Gratitude: Gratitude is more than a “Thank You.” It serves as a key link between receiving and giving. The current “Culture of Complaining” fosters bitterness, makes you a victim, feeling selfrighteous keeps you from taking responsibility and magnifies your problems. Studies have shown that gratitude expression results in a stronger immune system and lowers blood pressure. A higher level of positive emotions is correlated with more joy, optimism, and happiness. Acting with more generosity and compassion makes you feel less lonely and isolated. Humility reminds you that your success is not just your doing, it takes a “village” and may be is due to factors outside your control. Science of Gratitude: At the end of the 10 weeks, participants who kept a gratitude journal, felt well about their lives as a whole-25% happier; were more optimistic about the future and reported fewer health complaints. They spent more time exercising than the others resulting in better sleep pattern and less illness.

Why is Gratitude Good? Gratitude strengthens social ties and individual’s sense of interconnectedness; it increases one’s sense of personal worth. Gratitude can be a powerful antidote to a depressed view of life-that the world is cruel and against us. Gratitude forces us to accept kindness; benevolence begets another kindness-giving and receiving in a chain of inter-dependence. Gratitude practices: • Do one small and unobtrusive thoughtful or generous thing for each member of your family •

Express admiration for someone’s skills or talents

Don’t counterattack- Share the feeling

Count your blessings-go for deep gratitude

Remember it could be worse-think bigger and remember everything is impermanent

Easter Basket Candy Alternatives By Chelsea Scott

Chocolate bunnies, shiny jelly beans, sugared gumdrops, chick-shaped marshmallows, and candy-coated eggs in a rainbow of pastel shades. What do all of these things have in common? They’re usually found in kids’ Easter baskets, of course! We all remember these traditional treats. While any child would be happy to receive a basket of faux grass filled with pounds of sugary treats, parents might not be so sweet on the idea. Not to mention there are some youngsters who can’t enjoy candy due to a dairy, nut, soy or other allergy. Maybe this year, the Easter Bunny could fill the basket with something other than candy (hint, hint). Even swapping out half the candy for other things would be beneficial. Here are our best ideas for pint-

sized, non-candy Easter basket goodies. “Hoppy” Easter! • Sidewalk chalk •O ld-fashioned games (i.e. jacks, yo-yo, pick-up sticks) • Legos • Crayons • Fruity lip gloss • Flower seeds • Gift card(s) • Sugar-free gum • Hair bows • Sunglasses • Mini stuffed animal • Keychain • Bookmark • Water gun • Silly straws

• Book of magic tricks • Finger puppets • Trail mix (allergy permitting) • Votive candle • Jewelry • Lotion • Matchbox cars • Glow sticks • Ear buds • Mini Rubix cube • Colorful shoelaces • Stamps and an ink pad • Playdough • Jump rope • Slinky • Bouncy ball • Silly string

Les Mars Hotel:

Old World Luxury in Charming Healdsburg By Mike L. McColgan, Resident since 1990

I

n an effort to dine at all 3000 San Francisco area restaurants (1000 and counting) and visit all 600 Napa wineries (400 and counting), my wife, Linda, and I recently had the pleasure of visiting the charming town of Healdsburg. About a two-hour drive from our home in Danville, we enjoyed the movie set like town with Michelin Star restaurants, shops, world class wineries, tasting rooms and the Healdsburg treasure Les Mars Hotel featuring old world luxury. Les Mars is owned by entrepreneur and Fidelity Title CEO Bill Foley. Bill owns many wineries and resorts all over the world. He also recently purchased the new NHL Las Vegas hockey team the Golden Knights. The team is appropriately named as everything Bill touches turns to gold. Les Mars is no exception. Located one block from the town square, General Manager Brian Sommer demands impeccable service and strives for magical memories for every guest. There are 16 elegantly decorated rooms, offering wine and cheese every evening and a European style breakfast every morning. Our trip to Healdsburg began with a private tasting of The Calling Wines arranged by Public Relations Director Karen Brennan and proudly hosted by Winemaker James and Kerry MacPhail. The Calling Winery is owned by famous sportscaster Jim Nantz and long-time wine expert Peter Deutsch. Their love of wine and partnership is based on the belief that you find success by pursuing a calling in life. We began our tasting with the 2017 Dutton Ranch Chardonnay from the Russian River Valley in Sonoma County. It is a well-balanced Chardonnay with flavors of Meyer lemons and honey crisp apple. Next, we tasted the 2017 Sonoma Coast Chardonnay. It was a crisp Chardonnay with flavors of citrus, fruits, Gravenstein apple and pear. The next wine was 2016 Sullivan Vineyard with an elegant pewter label. It was a balanced acidity exhibiting the citrus, spice and mineral notes for which this region is renowned. The final tasting was the 2016 Patriarch Pinot Noir. The vineyard is located near the ocean in Sea Ranch. The cooler weather creates grapes with thicker skins creating wine with more structure and earthier notes. All of these wines were very enjoyable and available to purchase at Total Wine. For lunch, we enjoyed Willi’s Seafood and Raw Bar on the square that featured a large variety of fresh seafood. We especially enjoyed the barbecued oysters and fish tacos. The calamari was seasoned perfectly and the best we have ever eaten.

We also enjoyed a bottle of 2015 Le Reve wine that we blended and bottled a few years ago at Judd Hill Winery. This beautiful wine was silky and a full-bodied blend of 70% Estate Napa Cabernet, 20% Merlot, 5 % Cabernet Franc And 5% Petite Verdot. We were very pleased with the results of our first blending experience. After lunch, we checked into the elegant Les Mars Hotel then went to a private tasting of wines at Bill Foley’s magnificent 1400-acre Chalk Hill Winery. We took a tour of the pristine piece of property in a 4-wheel drive vehicle and enjoyed the sensational vistas on this sunny winter day. They also have a huge facility for private parties, large garden, and even a charming chapel for weddings. We enjoyed all the wines and took home a few bottles of the 2015 Carmenere that was an elegant blend of 96% Carmenere and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon. Returning to the hotel, we enjoyed the daily wine and cheese happy hour before an elegant dinner at nearby Valette. Valette is the dream of two brothers, Dustin Valette and Aaron Garzini, that opened in 2015. It was a unique foodie experience to add to our rich memory bank as the ambience, service and food presentations were like viewing classic art at the Louvre museum in Paris. It was a pleasure watching the skilled chef Dustin create these masterpieces in the open kitchen and enjoying the heavenly aromas with a bottle of wine from their extensive wine list. If you bring your own juice, there is a $20 corking fee. We began with a mushroom soup with a farm fresh egg on the bottom in a large heated bowl. Fresh truffles are then added to this perfectly seasoned soup. It was definitely the best mushroom soup that we have ever experienced. We were then recommended their famous scallops served in a puff pastry that exceeded all of the expectations. We then had the Hawaiian Poke with deep fried avocado slices that looked like a Monet painting and so tender it melted in your mouth. For dessert, we savored carrot cake that was moist and served warm with shaved carrots and a delicate sweet sauce.

store complete with a wine barrel dog house. We also stopped by the Wurst Restaurant featuring a variety of brats made by Detroit born and bred owner Charles. We enjoyed splitting a perfectly cooked brat and listening to some interesting stories from owner Charles. Charles played in a band with Ted Nugent also known as “the motor city madman.” He has his guitars displayed in the restaurant and also serves micro brews and Pabst Blue Ribbon beer. In addition, he also offers Vernors ginger ale which was invented in Detroit. It was extra special for us since we were also born and raised in the “Motor City.”

It is no wonder this restaurant is highly rated and full of happy patrons every night. We will definitely return. The next day we enjoyed breakfast in the Les Mars elegant wood paneled library. You can also choose to have breakfast served in your room. After breakfast, we took a walk around the Healdsburg Square and enjoyed shopping at the unique shops that even included a dog

Before we returned home, we enjoyed a wine and food pairing at nearby Jordan winery. It was a great way to conclude our trip. Jordan is another elegant winery producing world class wines. Of course, we took a few bottles of Chardonnay back to Danville with us. In conclusion, we would highly recommend you put Healdsburg and Les Mars Hotel on your “must do” bucket list. Success of the Last Dumb Buyer By Joe Morgan, CFP®, CFA, Principal: JWM Wealth Management, LLC, Resident since 2004

W

ho was the last dumb buyer of stocks?

Given the market has always risen over any 17 year period, this poor soul must have bought after the dot com crash. The next worst time to buy was probably October 9, 2007 just before the S&P 500 index threw in the towel dropped nearly 50%. That dumb buyer would have “lost” half their money in just a little over a year.

In fact, I would venture to guess that no long term, diversified investor has earned as low as a 6.5% return since the last market peak. Or at least, they shouldn’t have!

However, if they were able to hang on for the ride until today, they would have made their money back and then some.

One other thought, the “smartest” investor who put all her money in the market at the bottom in March 2009 has earned a 16% per year return. I would bet no one truly made that move either.

Specifically, $1 million invested at this worst possible time, after falling to about $500,000, would be worth about $1.8 million today (before the 2.2% dividend paid out each year)!

But earning somewhere between 6.5% and 16% should feed a well-structured financial plan quite nicely!

In other words, this dumb investor would have a total return of about 6.5% per year. And anyone fortunate enough to have invested on any other day around that time period would have earned more!

Monte Vista High School

High School Kaleidoscope By Ananya Lamba, Junior Reporter

W

e finally made it through the cold and rainy winter, so now we can enjoy the warm spring weather. The beginning of spring has already been filled with events. In March, students got a chance to showcase their talents in a district wide competition. The student recognition project allowed students throughout the district to show off what they have learned at school. Students got a chance to participate in categories such as photography, graphic design, or drama. There was a wide range of categories to make sure that every single person had something to contribute. The open house displayed everyone’s remarkable projects. Congratulations to all the winners and participants! Spring also holds some of the most memorable events in high school. During lunch, for instance, seniors formed teams with their friends and played in a dodgeball tournament to see who would become the dodgeball champions. This was both fun to watch and to play! Furthermore, juniors got to experience one of the most memorable high school experiences- junior prom. Whether they went with a date or with their friends, everyone had a blast. It was a night no one could ever forget- including music, laughter, and food.

Fourth quarter is here, which means it is time to start thinking about our classes for next year. During AP night, incoming tenth, eleventh, and twelfth graders got a chance to learn about their choices of AP classes for next year. This was an amazing night, for it helped many students make their decisions on what classes they want to take next year. Fourth quarter also means spring break is almost here. Everyone is looking forward to spring break as a reward for all of our hard work!

Frozen Smoothie Prep Packs By Kailee Capela

I

’ll be honest: some mornings, I just don’t feel like whipping up an entire breakfast. For days like these, I like to stock my freezer with a variety of smoothie packs that give me an easy and nutritious start to the day. I pack these around the first day of the month, and they last for the next few weeks. All you need are a few zip-top bags, fruit and/or veggies and a liquid of choice (water, milk, almond milk, coconut milk and juice are all great options)! Fresh or frozen fruit will work for these recipes.

Tropical Twist

Place the following fruit in a freezer bag: ½ cup pineapple ½ cup mango ½ banana When ready to use, add 1 - 1½ cups of liquid and blend until smooth.

Tip: When blending, it’s better to add less liquid at first, then slowly add more to get your desired texture. Here are a few of my favorite smoothie recipes to get you started!

Strawberry Banana

Place the following fruit in a freezer bag: 1 cup strawberries 1 banana When ready to use, add 1 - 1½ cups of liquid and blend until smooth.

Very Berry

Place the following fruit in a freezer bag: 1 cup strawberries ¼ cup blueberries ¼ cup raspberries ½ banana When ready to use, add 1 - 1½ cups of liquid and blend until smooth.

Go Green

Place the following fruit/veggies in a freezer bag: ½ cup strawberries ½ cup kiwi ½ banana 1 cup spinach When ready to use, add 1 - 1½ cups of liquid and blend until smooth.

A Message From Your Blackhawk Police Chief By Tricia England and Aaron “Wally” Barger, Resident since 2012

M

y name is Tricia England, and I was fortunate enough to be selected as the new Chief for Blackhawk when former Chief Ian Hebert retired. I have been with the Sheriff’s Office for 22 years and started my career in 1997 as a Police Dispatcher / 9-1-1 Operator before taking the leap into the police academy. Since graduating from the academy, I have worked many assignments, starting in the Custody Service Bureau at the Martinez Detention Facility. After transferring to Patrol I worked a variety of assignments to include the contract cities of Orinda and Danville as well as Bay Station, Valley Station as the Alamo Resident Deputy, and Muir Station as the Bay Point Resident Deputy. I also worked in the Volunteer Services Unit as the Assistant Volunteer Coordinator and was a member of the County Mutual Aid Mobile Field Force.

One final suggestion: The Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff is helping to form additional Neighborhood Watch Programs throughout your service area. For more information on this or to schedule an orientation meeting, please feel free to contact the Sheriff’s Crime Prevention Unit, Specialist Christina Lind-Winters at (925) 313-2682, or to schedule an orientation meeting. You may also contact Aaron “Wally” Barger, a Block Captain and resident in the community, at aaron.barger@yahoo. com for information and help in forming a Neighborhood Watch Program.

After promoting to the rank of Sergeant, I worked West County Detention Facility and was assigned as the Assistant Facility Commander until my promotion to the rank of Lieutenant. As a Lieutenant, I worked Patrol in the Watch Commander Program until being assigned as the Bay Station Commander. Most recently I was assigned as the department’s Training Manager until my selection as Chief of Blackhawk. My current assignment as the new Chief of Blackhawk, P2-A Service Area, has already offered me the opportunity to experience the community’s appreciation for the services of your police department. My goal is to serve the security and protection of all the Blackhawk Communities and the Blackhawk Plaza. Blackhawk Police Service continues to strive to offer the highest level of service possible to its residents and visitors. Please feel free to contact my office at any time for nonemergency issues or general information at 736-1018 or 646-2441. For medical emergencies or calls requiring an immediate police response, please call 9-1-1. 30

Come to the Zoo! Another reason to love San Francisco! By Sonia Lamba, Resident since 2015

Giraffes hanging out in the African Savanna habitat

H

opefully, the rain is behind us! And with the spring break coming up, a family visit to the San Francisco Zoo should be full on fun and learning. It’s a beautiful 100 acre urban haven nestled against the Pacific Ocean. I visited the zoo last spring with my kids. My kids learned about the animal habitats, food chains, endangered and rescued animals. I also loved it for its beautiful trees and flowers growing throughout. We made wonderful memories riding on the little puffer miniature steam train. I guess I will always remain a child at heart. As a kid, growing up in India, I visited the famous “Chattbir” zoo every summer holiday. I was always fascinated by the exotic animals that I don’t get to see everyday like monkeys, lions, hippos, elephants and reptiles. I only saw them on Discovery Channel or Animal planet or in the movie Mowgli (The Jungle Book). I feel so fortunate to be living in Blackhawk where we can see wildlife like birds, deer, rabbits, wild turkeys and other animals coexisting with us. The Duck Pond at the Blackhawk Plaza is the closest nature getaway for me and my kids. We love to watch and feed the ducks, enjoy the water fountains or just stroll around in the beautiful peaceful urban oasis we call home.

Sonia Lamba As an aspiring photographer, I have always loved taking beautiful photos of my friends and family, nature and travels. After having a fulfilling career in finance in New York, I moved to California in 2014 where my love for photography turned into an invigorating passion. Moving to gorgeous Blackhawk has further enriched and blossomed my love for the camera. I take my camera everywhere, regardless of how short the distance is. Knowing me, there is always a photo opportunity!

Blue Star Moms: How You Can Help By Megan Scott, Resident Since 2010

A

fter the attack on our country on 9/11/2001, three moms from San Ramon, CA, Patty Martin, Peggy Conklin and Nancy Ecker turned to one another for strength and support. Together they had 4 sons serving in the U. S. Army. On that terrible day in September they knew no other families with loved ones in the military. Finding no support groups in Northern California, they reached out in their community. They organized their first meeting in November 2001 at the Veteran’s Memorial Building in Danville, CA. About thirty moms from this area attended. Since that time, they have become an official chapter of The Blue Star Mothers of America Inc., a national organization, and membership has remained steady. The moms conduct casual meetings with most of their time devoted to sharing information about military kids. They share what they have learned about the military, helping moms with questions from boot camp to deployment and beyond.

Danville Chapter of Blue Star Moms

Danville Resident and Blue Star Moms Member Stacey Little agreed to share her story with Blackhawk Living Magazine. MS: What is the mission of Blue Star Moms? SL: BSM Chapter 101 was established November 2001, shortly after the terrorist attacks on 9/11/2001. We share information with each other about what we have learned about the military, supporting one another from boot camp to deployments. Having

personnel. All of us moms feel a deep calling to support our troops. We feel it’s the least we can do for the immense sacrifices our sons and daughters are making for us. Our chapter sends care packages to our deployed troops three times a year. For some of our troops, our care packages are the only piece of home they receive while they are deployed. When we receive thank you notes from the soldiers who have received our packages it is heart warming. During my son’s first deployment he worked at a hospital. He was able to share his care packages with everyone he worked with as well as some of the patients. The thank you notes that our local school children made for the troops were hung all over the hospital so the injured soldiers would know people at home were thinking about them and cared about them. MS: How can the Blackhawk Community help Blue Star Moms? SL: We hold “drop zones” at several grocery stores in the area throughout the year to collect items for our care packages. Our drop zones are also a way for us to be a visible reminder that we still have troops deployed all over the world. Our main mission is supporting boots on the ground, but because of the support our community has shown to us we also are able to support other areas of need such as Veterans Outreach, Wounded Soldiers and Gold Star Families. We welcome anyone who wants help our chapter. Our website has a link for volunteering or making a tax deductible donation. We also have information on our website for those who want to organize their own fundraiser as an individual or at their place of work or school for our chapter. Push Present Gift Ideas from the New Grandparents! By Steve Padis, Steve Padis Jewelry, Resident since 1989

My wife, Judy, and I welcomed our first grandchild, Caroline, into the world last March and of course, new parents and babies have certainly been on the brain. When our oldest son, George, approached us for pushpresent ideas to gift to his wife, Kate, we of course had lots of ideas!

W

hat is a push present you ask? Simply put, it is a gift given as a token of celebration over the birth of a baby. The gift is just for the new mom. It is something that makes her feel special and appreciated after just going through one of the most challenging and most rewarding tasks in life. A push gift puts the focus back on the new mom. She deserves something special that makes her feel cherished. Jewelry offers a tangible reminder of the first few moments with her new child — and of your thoughtfulness — that she can wear every day. The new parent or the new grandparents can choose to present a push gift after the birth of the new addition to the family. No matter who gives the push gift, the goal is to make the new mom feel loved and appreciated. Birthstone and Personalized Jewelry Push present birthstone jewelry offers a personalized touch to the push gift concept. It commemorates the birth month of the newest member of the family. Each time she looks at the birthstone jewelry, she remembers the time when she became a mom. Birthstone options come in all categories of jewelry, including earrings, bracelets and necklaces. Birthstone jewelry also starts a tradition for future babies. Add to her collection of birthstone jewelry to represent all of her children. If you’re buying a push gift for the last baby in the family, choose one jewelry piece that includes the birthstones for every member of the family — a necklace with small birthstone pendants for each family member or a bracelet with each person’s birthstone set in it, for example.

them into her ears, she’ll fondly remember your love and the birth of her child. An Additional Band to Complement Her Wedding Ring The wedding ring she wears every day represents your love and takes her back to your wedding day. It is a very important symbol to show your strength and commitment to one another. The birth of a child is just as monumental as getting married. With a new baby in the picture, that love you share continues to grow. Why not add another ring to her finger to represent that new family dynamic? Choose a band that fits beside her wedding ring, paying close attention to the style of the original band to ensure they look good together. We at Padis can provide suggestions for bands that will work well. Each time she gazes at her hand, she’ll not only remember her love for you but also the growing love your family has, thanks to the birth of your new baby. A New Timepiece Cell phones may be the go-to way to tell time, but an elegant designer watch is still a relevant and useful accessory in a new mom’s life. Not only will a new watch keep her on time for those pediatrician appointments and play dates, it also decorates her wrist with a sophisticated style. Choose a watch that fits her style and the way she might use it. Luminescent hands and easy-to-read numbers make the watch visible even in a dark nursery or under sleep-deprived conditions.

Like a birthstone, an initial on a piece of jewelry adds a personalized touch that represents the new family member. If you already know the baby’s name, you can easily purchase a piece of jewelry with the first initial before the birth. If you want to symbolize the changing composition of your family, incorporate the initials of mom and dad as well.

Whatever your role in the expectant mother’s life, make her baby’s birth special with a push gift. A thoughtful jewelry gift gives her a keepsake she’ll always cherish that reminds her of you and of the day that changed her life forever. Now that you know what a push present is, you’re ready to pick out the perfect gift! Head on over to any Padis Jewelry location and our consultants will be happy to help you pick out the perfect push present.

Sparkling Earrings Earrings work well as a push present because they are something the new mom can wear every day. Diamond solitaire earrings offer a classic, versatile option, but push present earrings can be any style or shape. The earrings don’t need a special connection to the birth itself. Simply receiving the earrings on the day her child is born is enough to make them special. Each time she slips

We are also thrilled to share that we are expanding to five convenient locations to serve you! We are opening our first location in the East Bay in the next few weeks. Be on the lookout for our brand new Forevermark store at Broadway Plaza in Walnut Creek!
