Welcome to the 73rd Season We dedicate this season to Byron Lee, Ron Moyer, and Hap Haberman.
From the Artistic Director... Hello Friends, It’s great to share this time with you, here, at the Black Hills Playhouse. This is our 73rd season and for many of you this is the umpteenth year you have been coming, and enjoying what the BHP has to offer. This is my 23rd season. I want to take a moment and share with you our mission statement: The Black Hills Playhouse transforms lives through professional theatre, education programs, and partnerships. Partnerships: Custer State Park, the University of South Dakota, the South Dakota Arts Council, sponsors, advertisers, donors, friends, and you. What happens here wouldn’t be possible without all of these organizations and individuals, agreeing that the transformative work that happens is worthwhile. Education Programs: throughout the year we are doing extraordinary work that is impacting lives, bringing awareness, and raising humanity. Our touring youth theatre, Dakota Players, was in over 30 communities this last year, providing arts opportunities to the youth across the state. Our education programs also work with people with disabilities, which not only enrich their lives, but help to develop skills in communication, teamwork, and problem-solving. These education programs are where the transformative power is most easily seen. Professional Theatre: what we do here at our BHP summer home is the most visible part of our mission. We hope that when you come to the playhouse, you experience a transformation and leave thoughtful, enlightened, exhilarated, laughing, empowered, or just better. The BHP is also transformative for the artists, we gather as strangers and when we disperse it is with the life-long bond of having made great art in this beautiful place. This year we lost three great influences on the BHP and on me: Byron Lee, Ron Moyer, and Hap Haberman. Byron was the son of Doc Lee who basically grew up here, worked many jobs during his summers, and was a stalwart supporter of the playhouse throughout his life. I had the pleasure of working with both Ron and Hap on many plays. They were both generous, loving, nurturing, talented, and eager to share their love of the theatre. Ron had a fierce intellect and was a wonderful teacher wanting to pass on his vast knowledge. Hap was a great mentor who loved to tell stories, which were full of life and theatre lessons. You always learned something just by being in their presence. These men will all be missed, but their legacy will live on for generations. Thanks for being a part of the Black Hills Playhouse and embracing our mission, and I am glad you are here.

(Rated PG-13) Romantic Comedy by Topher Payne Regional premiere! Wonderful romantic comedy that explores empty-nest syndrome, complications of long-term romance and the relationship of adult children with their parents as the parents proclaim their intention to divorce after 37 years of marriage. Each partner seeks solace at the homes of their grown children and hilarity ensures. Topher Payne calls his work “Parent Trap” for grown-ups.
July 13-29, 2018
(Rated PG) Music by Richard Rodgers, Book and Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II Set in the West, just after the turn of the century, the highspirited rivalry between the local farmers and cowboys provides the colorful background against which Curly, a handsome cowboy, and Laurey, a winsome farm girl, play out their love story. Although the road to true love never runs smooth, with these two headstrong romantics holding the reins, love’s journey is as bumpy as a surrey ride down a country road.
June 22-July 3, 2018
(Rated PG-13) Musical Comedy Music & Lyrics by William Finn, Book by Rachel Sheinkin, Conceived by Rebecca Feldman Hilariously F-U-N-N-Y show where six unusual adolescents vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime, run by three equally unusual grown-ups. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing life un-affirming “ding” of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Six spellers; one speller leaves! At least the losers get a juice box.
August 3-19, 2018
(Rated PG) Comedy Thriller by Ken Ludwig It is December 1936, and Broadway star William Gillette, admired the world over for his leading role in the play Sherlock Holmes, has invited his fellow cast members to his Connecticut castle for a weekend of revelry. But, when one of the guests is stabbed to death, the festivities in this isolated house of tricks and mirrors quickly turn dangerous.

When It Comes to Donors, We’re All Ears
Disney’s Mickey Mouse Club has launched stellar careers of a lucky few into TV, film, Broadway or musical success. However, many aspiring actors, writers, directors and technicians take the circuitous route through theatre camps, high school plays, college degrees and summer stock theatre companies. The Black Hills Playhouse is an incubator for future theatrical talent. Yes, we entertain. Yes, we bring people together. Yes, we provide an arts experience like no other in beautiful Custer State Park. And yes, we educate. BHP staff educates through our higher learning experiences on the BHP Campus to our ongoing theatre education in schools and communities across South Dakota. How do we fund the Black Hills Playhouse and our expanded outreach programs? 70% of our operating support comes from earned ticket and concession income. 30% of operating income needs to be accomplished through fundraising efforts. There are many ways to donate. • Friends of the BHP is our annual appeal response group, find out more at blackhilsplayhouse.com. • Inspired by the show? Put cash or a check in the donation envelope in your program and hand it to a staff member on your way out. • Mail a tax deductible donation to BHP, PO Box 2513, Rapid City, SD 57709. • Call us at 605-255-4910 to get help with a major gift and information on estate planning. • Give to endowment funds invested with the USD Foundation or Black Hills Area Community Foundation to benefit the BHP. • Name the BHP as a recipient of matching gifts by your company and double your donation power. • If your company has a grant or funding program, please tell us how we contact the business for grants or in-kind gifts. The BHP has launched our share of Broadway, Off-Broadway, TV, and film writers, directors, producers and actors. We have alumni throughout the U.S. and abroad doing the artistic work they trained for at the BHP. As much as we all enjoy the former Mouskateers: Justin, Britney, Ryan and Annette, their stories actually began in acting classes, music lessons and small theatres. The serious work of providing education and employment for theatrical arts professionals begins at the Black Hills Playhouse and with generous donors like YOU! Thank you for your years of support. We wouldn’t be here without our friends.

Jack & Ruth Cannon Memorial Fund
Jack and Ruth Cannon were longtime supporters of the BHP and Jack, for many years, wrote reviews of shows in the Rapid City Journal about our plays. They carried on support after their passing by setting up an endowment fund at the South Dakota Community Foundation that provides funds for our artistic programs annually. Interested in investing in the BHP through an endowment? Contact Linda Anderson at 605 255-4910 for more information. Support is provided with funds from the State of South Dakota, through the Department of Tourism and the National Endowment for the Arts. Please consider advocating for funding of the NEA as it makes incredible artistic programs available to people across our nation through operating support..

I love it when our patrons have suggestions of plays to consider, and If I don’t know of or about the play suggested, I try to find out. I get to know what a vast array of tastes our audience has. In the case of Tokens of Affection (thank you, David) I hadn’t heard of the play, but had read another play by the same author and really enjoyed it. The script is yet unpublished, but I was able to get a copy of it from Topher Payne’s agent. I fell in love with the characters and the family dynamics, and had wonderful moments of recognition in the interactions. I enjoyed the familial traits that are passed down from generation to generation; we inherit a lot from our parents. This year my wife Debra and I are celebrating 25 years of marriage. We met right here at the BHP in 1992. Over the years we have had struggles and there have been times when I have neglected the little things, the tokens of affection. So here’s to her and hoping that none of us forget about the little things. So, pick up some flowers on your way home from work once in a while.

The word that comes to mind while I have worked on this show is “joy.” There is so much joy in this piece. It celebrates the aspects of the characters—and ourselves—that often don’t get this kind of positive attention. It praises our quirks, our nerdiness, our fears, and our capacity for love and for growth.

When I first read the libretto, I immediately thought of A Chorus Line. Original cast member Donna McKechnie (“Cassie”) said, “Everyone has dreams and hopes, and there was something in that show for everybody. Men who had just retired would write me letters and say. ‘your character made me go out and start a new business.’ Football players would say ‘the line,’ they would talk about ‘the line, being on the line.’” And that’s very much like “25th Annual”. It’s about kids at spelling bees—and it’s not. It’s about the part of us that didn’t fit in or marched to its own drummer. It’s about that thing that we enjoy doing that other people might find weird. It’s about finding a place where your special, unique talents or quirks are celebrated rather than ostracized. I have loved the music and lyrics of William Finn since I first heard a recording of Falsettos nearly twenty-five years ago. He captures the humor and pain of our daily lives and has such empathy for people’s foibles and failures. He writes songs that are moving and memorable and that yet somehow sound the way real people would sing off the top of their head. And yes, I was the class spelling champion in the fourth grade. But in the school finals, I spelled too quickly and added an unnecessary “d” to the end of the word “engage.” And as you can see, I am totally over it.

DIRECTOR’S NOTES Welcome to this birthday party for Oklahoma! which premiered on Broadway 75 years ago and changed musical theater forever. Prior to its debut, musicals mostly consisted of big splashy numbers featuring scantily-clad chorus girls, the songs connected by rudimentary or laughable plots. Though Show Boat broke that mold, Oklahoma! is widely credited as the breakthrough “integrated” musical where the songs, dancing and all the other elements contributed to the story. One wag, who saw the out-of-town tryout in New Haven where it was called Away We Go snarked, “No legs. No jokes. No chance.” Opening night on Broadway, in 1943 as WWII was raging, wasn’t even sold out. But the next day there were lines around the block and for the next four years tickets were nearly impossible to obtain – the Hamilton of its day. The show crystalized what Americans were fighting for overseas. And it launched the extraordinary partnership of Rodgers & Hammerstein who followed it with Carousel, The King and I, South Pacific and The Sound of Music – the golden age of the American musical. Oklahoma is about creating a community in new and untamed territory. Our goal is to give this production the feel of a true community event, like the church socials I grew up with in Spearfish. Few shows are more appropriate for the Playhouse – the big skies are just over the pines, everything is up to date in Rapid City, the cowboys (my father’s family) and the farmers (my mother’s) are friends and hopefully greeting their neighbors as everyone attends our social together. So welcome to our “barn”, pull up a rocking chair and enjoy this classic of the American stage. And when you’re singing the title song on your ride home, feel free to change the lyrics to “South Dakota.” It scans.

by Ken Ludwig It is December 1936, and Broadway star William Gillette, admired the world over for his leading role in the play Sherlock Holmes, has invited his fellow cast members to his Connecticut castle for a weekend of revelry. But, when one of the guests is stabbed to death, the festivities in this isolated house of tricks and mirrors quickly turn dangerous. It is then up to Gillette himself, as he assumes the persona of his beloved Holmes, to track down the killer before the next victim appears. The danger and hilarity are non-stop in this glittering whodunit set during the Christmas holidays. Comedy Thriller Rated PG

DIRECTOR’S NOTES When fact meets fiction meets murder only an entertaining evening of theatre can be the logical outcome! Ken Ludwig, in his exciting play The Game’s Afoot; or Holmes for the Holidays utilizes a star of the stage from the early 20th century to tell the hilariously entertaining story of a man who plays Sherlock Holmes now needing Sherlock Holmes himself! As Ludwig explains in the author’s notes: William Gillette was a star of the American stage during the early part of the 20th century. He wrote the play Sherlock Holmes in collaboration with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and he stared in it with enormous success in both New York and London for a total of 1,300 performances spread over thirty years. He became associated with Holmes in the public’s imagination; and with his royalties from this and other plays, he built a replica of a medieval castle on the Connecticut River filled with gadgets representing the latest technology. It was here that he entertained the casts of his latest New York hits, and he remained beloved to his fans until his death in his eighties. Gillette Castle is open to the public to this this day. It is within the beautiful setting of Gillette Castle our mystery unfolds. As Ludwig writes in the play’s notes he studied mysteries in detail in preparation for writing this play. He notes the importance of plot and that everything is connected. Ludwig has, without a doubt, constructed an expert plot of twists and turns that will keep you guessing. But remember that Holmes always gets his man!

In Memory Of
Byron Lee Byron was born in Rapid City, SD to Patricia Edna Kary of Norris, SD on Feb. 6, 1945. He was adopted by Dr. Warren “Doc” Lee and Margaret “Wifie” Lee in the spring of that year. The next year, Byron traveled from Vermillion, where he grew up, to the Black Hills where his dad was just starting the Black Hills Playhouse in Custer State Park. Two years later he was joined by adopted brother, Milt Lee, and they grew up together in Vermillion in the winter and spent each summer at the Playhouse. Byron grew up and became a lawyer, but remained devoted to the Playhouse, serving on both the BHP Alumni Association and Black Hills Playhouse boards. He and his familly established an endowment fund at the USD Foundation which benefits the Playhouse through physical plant improvements.
Ron Moyer Dr. Ron Moyer served the University of South Dakota for thirty-six years as a professor of theatre. Under Dr. Moyer’s leadership, the Department of Theatre expanded its programs and curricular offerings and formed a strong bond with many high schools through his service activities with the SD High School Activities Association. Ron was a regular artistic contributor as an actor and director to the Black Hills Playhouse for nearly three decades. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and a friend to many who worked at the Black Hills Playhouse. We celebrate his legacy and the impact he had on his students, the university, the Black Hills Playhouse, and the state of South Dakota.
Hap Haberman Dr. L.D. Haberman, better known as Hap Haberman to legions of Playhouse fans, passed away last fall at the age of 99. In his wonderfully long, rewarding lifetime, Hap filled many varied roles--beloved teacher and stage director, devoted husband and father, outstanding light comedy writer, acclaimed actor, talented musician, delightfully witty speaker and storyteller, avid sports lover, voracious reader, and charmingly congenial party host.Topping all that, Hap may very well have been the kindest, most thoughtful man any of us were ever lucky enough to know. Hap and Ellie spent 42 glorious summers at the BHP and left a wonderful legacy. Hap and his beloved wife, Ellie, were part of the tireless, innovative and delightful pioneers who laid a strong foundation for the BHP, for which we are grateful.
We will always be grateful to Byron and his family for their contributions to the BHP.
