I’d like to ask you a question: Why do you go to the theatre?

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

It’s a question that, for me, doesn’t have a simple short answer. I go to the bank because I need to make a transaction, whether investment or loan. I go to the store because I need supplies. I go to the doctor because my body needs help or to prevent illness. But why do I go to the theatre? I go because I need to feel. Feel what has happened in the past, feel what is happening in the world around me and identify with what the characters are going through. Sometimes it is to reinforce my understanding of what I have gone through. And sometimes after attending a play, I have gained a new perspective of how somebody else experiences life. I truly love these experiences because I come away with a greater understanding of what it means to be human. I have never been divorced, lost a child or a spouse, been the victim of a vicious crime, or been the subject of a miscarriage of justice; but because of theatre I have a better understanding of those who have gone through these situations. Theatre has given me empathy.

"I regard the theatre as the greatest of all art forms, the most immediate way in which a human being can share with another the sense of what it is to be a human being." ~Oscar Wilde So, why do you go to the theatre? Whatever the reason you are here, we welcome you and are glad you have joined us for the 76th Season.

Black Hills Playhouse 2022 - 5

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Thanks for joining us for the 76th Season in Custer State Park! Getting back into the Warren M. Lee Theatre brings us all great joy. While last year we were grateful to be able to perform outside, going back inside is very exciting indeed. Kudos to the staff, board members, contractors, and generous donors who have made it possible to upgrade the exterior and insulate this historic gem of a building. In my 12th year working for the Black Hills Playhouse, it is satisfying to note how far we’ve come with improvements made over the past decade to artistic programs and the BHP Campus in the Park. What is truly gratifying is that through innovative theatre education programs serving people across the state of South Dakota, we have increased our reach dramatically over the past decade. Over 10,000 people will be touched by our touring programs, camps, workshops, and expanding stage opportunities, in addition to the 17,000+ admissions to shows at the Park this summer. We continue to thrive because of you, the community who has been our partner for over seven decades. We know that theatre has the power to transform hearts and minds by reminding us what it means to be human. And, because of you, we are able to make the gift of theatre accessible to people of all ages and abilities. What a privilege it is to be able to to be a part of truly meaningful and important work for our world. Thank you.

Welcome From the President of the University of South Dakota.... On behalf of the University of South Dakota, welcome to the Black Hills Playhouse and thank you for your support of the arts. USD is a proud partner of the Playhouse, sharing a vision for celebrating and promoting creativity, community and artistic growth in South Dakota. At its humble beginnings, the Black Hills Playhouse was a dream – a USD theatre professor’s vision to offer professional theatre experiences in the rural Midwest while growing opportunities for theatre professionals and students. The organization has since grown into a pillar of the arts in the state; together, the USD College of Fine Arts and the Black Hills Playhouse deliver enriching fine arts experiences and educational opportunities that establish South Dakota as a destination and home for artists. We are excited that you are here to experience the beauty of South Dakota theatre and hope you enjoy this season at the Black Hills Playhouse. Sheila K. Gestring

From the Dean of the College of Fine Arts I want to personally welcome you to the Black Hills Playhouse and the marvelous Warren M. Lee Theatre. We are excited about this year’s season! The BHP staff and volunteers have worked hard to create a safe and enjoyable experience which will enable you to view the best of live theatre with South Dakota’s Black Hills as an exquisite backdrop. The USD College of Fine arts prepares students for a life of amazing and rewarding experiences in art, music, and theatre. Our vibrant campus is active with music concerts, theatrical performances, and art gallery exhibitions. The arts and culture sector annually contributes $1.2 billion to the state’s economy, representing 2.5% of South Dakota’s GDP and more than 14,000 jobs. More importantly, the arts allow us to express the meaning of our experiences and understand and interpret our world. The USD College of Fine Arts is a proud partner with the Black Hills Playhouse. Together, we combine creativity and knowledge to make a difference for our world. - Bruce Kelley

June 3-June 12, 2022 THE MOUNTAINTOP by Katori Hall directed by Egla Hassan Pay-as-you-can-preview Thursday, June 2nd. Ms. Hassan appears through the generosity of Brian Hagg, Attorney at Law.

If a tree falls in the forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound? If a child in a Texas border town is ripped away from their parents’ arms, do the citizens of New York need to do something about it? If a man in Minnesota is killed because of the way he looks, are the people of South Dakota responsible to take action to make things better? It is easy to become immobilized by the immensity of problems and easier yet to turn a blind eye to the suffering of people in far off places. In THE MOUNTAINTOP, playwright Katori Hall sketches the outlines of a giant of the Civil Rights movement. Instead of cataloging MLK’s great efforts to bring equality to ALL people, Hall takes some fictional liberties to give us a glimpse of a humanized hero who, with the help of mysterious or supernatural forces, wonders about the effect his work has had. Did he do enough? Will the work continue after he is gone? The message implied in Katori Hall’s play is that doing the right thing is like a relay race: we do our part and then give the race over for others to finish. Every individual is responsible to help in making this world a better place FOR ALL PEOPLE. Martin Luther King (like Moses before him), had a vision of a Promised Land, where all people are free. We are part of that promise. Even our smallest attempt to make the world a better place contributes to the relay race.

- Egla Hassan RATED R - Contains coarse language including racial slurs and adult content. This performance may contain smoking of tobacco-free cigarettes.

June 18-July 3, 2022 THE ODD COUPLE by Neil Simon directed by Bill Russell Pay-as-you-can-preview Friday, June 17th Mr. Russell appears through the generosity of Auto Choice, Spearfish.

Elegies for Angels Punks and Raging Queens, Pageant, Side Show

I’m always thrilled to return to the Playhouse. This, my fourth time directing here, is meaningful in several ways. I have long admired Neil Simon’s writing. A formative early theatrical experience was seeing his Barefoot in the Park in Chicago starring Richard Benjamin, Joan Van Ark and the luminous Myrna Loy – the first stop of its first national tour. The writing was hilarious, the laughs driven by character. Mike Nichols’ direction made me a life-long fan. Manny Azenberg, who presented all of Simon’s plays from 1972 on, produced the original Broadway production of Side Show (I wrote the book and lyrics). Neil told Manny he’d been hearing good things about the readings we’d done and wondered why Manny hadn’t asked him to invest. He ended up taking a substantial share. Years later, when Manny produced The Odd Couple revival starring Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick, he allowed us to make a small investment, which was a great ride. And now I get to direct the show in one of my favorite theaters with two of my favorite actors alternating in the lead roles. What fun!

Pay-as-you-can preview Tues, July 12 PLEASE NOTE: This show opens on a Wednesday matinee with opening reception Wednesday night. Mr. Speck appears through the generosity of Dave & De Knudson.

From our earliest recollections of storytelling, folk tales and fairy tales were the ones I always found most adventurous, courageous, and magical. A place where imagination takes flight, and the realm of possibilities are endless. That no matter who you are or where you are in the beautiful spectrum of life’s existence, wonderful experiences can come true. In the purest of ways, with some modern lingo and a few fresh quips, this Cinderella is as accessible and believable as our own current dreams for all humanity! Enjoy the magic of theatre in the woods and thank you for joining us on our little adventure.

August 10-August 20, 2022 SOMETHING ROTTEN! by John O'Farrell & Karey Kirkpatrick directed by Kajsa Jones Pay-as-you-can-preview Tuesday, August 9th Ms. Jones appears through the generosity of Jenny's Floral.

Welcome to the Black Hills Playhouse! As you probably have now realized, you’re about to see a musical and you’re also in the woods. What if I also told you you’re about to witness a story about Shakespeare and Musical Theater? I hope you’d say you’re excited, because spoiler alert: you are here. And how grateful we are! Something Rotten! is a laugh-filled love letter to two of the most beloved forms of theater and a uniting of two seemingly opposite things. It chronicles the highs and lows (and really lows) of the creative process and reminds us all that we’ve had what we needed all along. Even when that feels like a contradiction. How lucky we are to celebrate the theater with real live audiences again. Thank you for joining us and enjoy the show!

It has organized and executed several major projects for the good of the BHP including raising funds to build Haberman Hall, producing a fundraiser to buy drapes for the stage, organizing reunions (in 2021 over Zoom!), and, helping to raise funds for the On Our Side project which replaced the aging siding on the Warren M. Lee Theatre, insulating the building for the first time in its history, and re-roofing the building. The BHP is grateful for all of the critical support from alums over the years. Black Hills Area Community Foundation The Black Hills Area Community Foundation holds the newly created quasi-endowed Black Hills Playhouse Board Reserve Fund and the Landon Fund, an endowment created in memory of Stephen Landon, a talented scenic designer for the BHP. To donate to the BHP Board Reserve or Landon funds, please contact Jeff Kingsbury at jeff@blackhillsplayhouse.com or by calling 605 255-4910. BankWest For more than 130 years, BankWest SD has earned long-term customer relationships by helping their customers and communities succeed while retaining hometown values and roots. BankWest has been a capital and program sponsor for decades and we are grateful for all they do to preserve and promote the arts through support of the Black Hills Playhouse. Jack and Ruth Cannon Memorial Fund of the South Dakota Community Foundation Jack and Ruth Cannon were longtime supporters of the BHP. Jack wrote reviews of the shows in the Rapid City Journal for many years. They carried on their support after their passing by setting up an endowment fund at the South Dakota Community Foundation that provides funds for our artistic programs annually. Interested in investing in the BHP through an endowment? These funds provide essential support for the BHP Family of Programs. Contact Linda Anderson at 605-255-4910 ext 2 for more information. Custer State Park and SD Department of Game, Fish, & Parks Custer State Park encompasses 71,000 acres of spectacular terrain and an abundance of wildlife. CSP offers a world of adventure and fun, including family activities like shows at the Black Hills Playhouse. The park includes Sylvan Lake Lodge, Legion Lake Lodge, Blue Bell Lodge, and the State Game Lodge. It has been the home of the Black Hills Playhouse since 1946 and CSP has been a great partner over the years. The SD Department of Game, Fish, & Parks was instrumental this year in helping to repeal outdated legislation regarding the Playhouse related to repair and maintenance and also in advocating for federal funds to help replace our antiquated sewer systems. Meg and Loyd Garrison The Garrison’s have provided significant annual support to the Playhouse for years which has resulted in the growth of innovative statewide arts programs and improvements to the BHP in Custer State Park. Every year this support is kindly matched by the Shell Foundation which increases their donation impact! Do you have a match for donations through your employer?
