From the Artistic Director....
Quiet on the set! Action!
75 is such a great number, we thought the suspense of waiting a year would make it sweeter. That’s how I’ve decided to look at it. Throughout the last year I have heard myself quoting the Wicked Witch of the West “I’m melting, melting! Oh, what a world, what a world.” I was broken-hearted last summer when we had to make the decision to not perform. With the future uncertain, we began to brainstorm and come up with ideas for how we could make this year happen. I pushed the idea of performing outside and we started to plan. I knew it would be complicated, but I didn’t know how complicated. The New Frontier Theatre is the result of thousands of hours by dozens of people working to make it come together. So many people volunteered their time to help ensure the survival and success of the Playhouse: board members, alumni, current company members, and many more. They all spent time thinking, planning, designing, and coming up with creative partnerships to make this season possible. And we are so grateful to donors to this project. From the Executive Director.... We have worked diligently at the Playhouse over the past decade to improve the campus in Custer State Park, to increase production values of the work we do, and to expand education programs statewide. This is in service of meeting our mission to deliver exceptional theatre programs that engage diverse people and strengthen South Dakota communities. We also took this path to diversify our income streams and create a stronger foundation for the company. Never in a million years could we have imagined that in 2020 all of our funding streams would simultaneously evaporate. All but one. What stuck with us was funding from our devoted community of donors, funders, patrons, volunteers, and board members who showed unequivocally that the Playhouse mattered to them. We could not have made it through this year without each and every one of them. So, a major pandemic has changed the way we do theatre. And in the pause which the pandemic created, we have contemplated what our world will look like after. Civic unrest across the country has brought many issues to the forefront which we believe will inform the work we do well into the future.This year the board adopted the following diversity statement: The Black Hills Playhouse is committed to creating theatre that welcomes, celebrates, and promotes the human experience in all its diversity. We seek to collaborate with, employ, share the stories of, and engage individuals of all backgrounds and experiences to foster a healthy environment for opportunity and growth through the power of performance art. What this means is that we are determined to be more intentional in our relationships, our hiring, and our storytelling. It means we will work harder to eliminate barriers to our programs and participate in a more meaningful and authentic way with the diverse cultures of people who reside in South Dakota. Important work to be sure. I send a special thanks to our incredible staff who have pivoted constantly since March of 2020 to keep theatre alive and to our Board of Directors. Special thanks also to our President Holly Knox and our executive committee, Mark Meersman, Sara Southwood, Sharla Steever, Todd Brink, and Bruce Kelley, for meeting weekly last year as we worked to keep things afloat. Weather and the New Frontier outdoor performance area The weather will play an active role at the BHP’s New Frontier Theatre which is located outside. When the circumstances are right, Nature’s special effects can be downright spectacular. Wildlife may wander close to the performing area (please do not engage them!) Coming to the BHP is an adventure, and it’s always best to come prepared.
Exchange Policy
We recommend you check the weather forecast a day or two before your performance to be prepared for what may come. Remember, if the weather forecast is questionable, you have the option to exchange your tickets until the day before the performance, no later than 4:00 pm. Those patrons with tickets scheduled for Tuesday would need to leave a message or send an email to tickets@blackhillsplayhouse.com on Monday as the Box Office is closed that day.
Weather Policy
We never cancel a performance in advance of the scheduled curtain time. Cancellation decisions are made in consultation with weather professionals based on the specific forecast for BHP at the time of the performance. In case of inclement weather, we will make every effort to perform, including playing in light rain. Also, we may delay the performance to allow weather to pass. A decision to play or cancel will be made within approximately 45 minutes of the time the performance was delayed. If a performance is cancelled before the first intermission, refunds or tickets to another 2021 performance will be offered. If a performance is cancelled after the first intermission begins, refunds are not available, but tickets to another 2021 performance will be offered. In-person tickets are subject to availability. No immediate on-site refunds are available. Handling fees and concession purchases are nonrefundable.
In the Event of a Cancellation
All ticket holders for a cancelled performance are eligible for exchanges or refunds, based on when the performance is cancelled. You do not have to be in attendance to qualify; however if you decide not to attend a performance and the show goes on as scheduled you will not be eligible for refunds or exchanges.
Booking rainout exchanges
To rebook tickets from a cancelled performance, please call the Box Office when you have a new date selected, and have your order number or tickets from the rained-out show available. Rebookings for rained out performances are complimentary, and may be for any performance during the 2021 season, subject to availability. Please note, rainout tickets cannot be rebooked online.
Requesting a rainout refund
Please contact the box office by phone to request a rain refund. Requested refunds are issued to the original purchaser by the original method of payment. Handling charges are nonrefundable. For questions and information or to make new arrangements for a rained out performance please contact the BHP Box Office at 605 255-4141 or at tickets@blackhillsplayhouse.com. 16

For the 75th season of the Black Hills Playhouse (BHP), we are producing the season in a different way, but with a nod to the past. From 1947-1950, the BHP performed in a tent theater near Legion Lake called the Frontier Theatre. Forced by the hand of the current COVID-19 pandemic, the board, staff, funders, and volunteers of the BHP have worked to ensure the safety of artists and patrons in this challenging time by creating this new outdoor performing space. The New Frontier Theatre, a name born of pragmatism and nostalgia, represents meeting this challenge, but also an opportunity for future performing arts programs at the BHP. Our primary concern as we made decisions back in October, was getting back to performing in the Park, but also making a plan to keep people (audiences and artists) healthy. We are working with a smaller company this year which makes it even more imperative.

DIRECTOR’S NOTES This is my time to make a confession: I do not have the nostalgic connection that most Americans have with their high school years. I came to this country in 1965 to finish my last two years of high school and I was definitely not one of the in crowd (the Wonderettes). I did not share years of experiences and activities, nor did I have a group of friends with whom I could share longings and ideas.

I spent my two years taking every English class offered and applying to universities in hopes of getting a scholarship. Prom Queen was not even something I was aware of, nor cared about. But I was an observer. And I knew who the Wonderettes were for my senior year. The other part of this confession is that now I have a chance to create the perfect Prom Night and Ten-Year Reunion. Even though I did not live in the United States in the 1950s, I knew the music. And I loved it. If anything THE MARVELOUS WONDERETTES can illuminate for us is that life, like our high school years, presents us with all kinds of challenges as well as successes and that the only way to alleviate the pain or to multiply a joy is to share it. In this show, Joe DiPietro shows us versions of ourselves in situations we have been in or can identify with. And he does it with a deft hand that gives us plenty of opportunity to laugh, cringe, and enjoy.

One of the aspects I love most about this show is how it allows four actors to take on the multiple roles. We get to watch them progress through the show at the same time as we are watching the progression of the lives and loves of the characters they portray.

It seems fitting that a small-town, church-going, musician who grew up listening to everything from Kiss to Amy Grant, would be directing one of the most successful off-Broadway musical comedies of all time. I, too, played keyboards in a rock band and toured with They Might Be Giants – a very unique and amazing kind of boy band. As a teen, I hosted neighborhood lip-sync concerts in our garage, complete with costumes and make-shift instruments, but I digress. With all this diverse experience, one might even wonder if I once choreographed for a high school dance team or was president of a church youth group. You can decide which one of these is true… All in fun, with a little satire and joyful praise, The Altar Boyz bring you their final performance on their “Raise the Praise” tour where your sins are welcome and your laughter, too! Jack and Ruth Cannon were longtime supporters of the BHP. Jack wrote reviews of the shows in the Rapid City Journal for many years. They carried on their support after their passing by setting up an endowment fund at the South Dakota Community Foundation that provides funds for our artistic programs annually. Support is provided with funds from the State of South Dakota through the Department of Tourism and the National Endowment for the Arts. The Black Hills Playhouse receives a Challenge Grant and is on both the Artists in Schools and Communities and Touring Arts rosters which provide arts experiences for communities statewide. Additional Covid Relief funds were provided by grants to the Playhouse through the SDAC in 2020.
The University of South Dakota has provided support for all 75 years of the BHP’s existence and employs the Executive Director. The BHP in turn, employs professors and students from USD, takes arts programs to students and families statewide through the Dakota Players Tour programs and BHP Jr. Performing Arts Camps, inspiring future USD Coyotes to study the arts in South Dakota. Elizabeth has participated in multiple intensives and institutes for Musical Theatre such as Southeastern Summer Theatre Institute, Broadway Theatre Connection, The Nola Project Winter Intensive, and Summer Lyric Intensive. She was also the lead as Sibella in A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder last semester at the University of South Dakota.

Cody Crisman recently designed the stage for Zanna Don’t! and Angels and Demons: The Medieval Mystery Plays at the University of South Dakota and was the Regional Allied Design and Technology winner for KCACTF Region 5 in 2020 for his painted drop of King Louie for USD’s Hunchback of Notre Dame. He is a current student at USD with an emphasis in Scenic Design and has been part of the shows produced since the Fall of 2019 as a Scenic Artist.

Becky Hicks Becky Hicks is a recent graduate from Augustana University with degrees in English, Secondary Education, and Theatre. In the fall, she will be pursuing a Master’s degree in Theatre Design with a concentration in Stage Properties at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. Some of the favorite shows she has designed include Clue the Musical, The Thanksgiving Play, and James and the Giant Peach the Musical. Vonnie is a 35-year veteran middle school teacher in Rapid City who found her love for musical theater later in life. She directed musical theatre at the Firehouse Brewing Theater for 11 years and serves as the music director for her church, Dynamix (local women’s Acapella group), and the BHP. She deeply adores and values the Black Hills Playhouse, the opportunities it provides both cast members and patrons, and hopes you LOVE your experience here!
Assistant Chef Cooking professionally for seven years, Brian graduated from the culinary program at Texas State Technical College, where he met Chef Vincent Frontino, forming a bond that would eventually bring him here to the Playhouse where he will serve as the Assistant Chef. Mr. Kingsbury has appeared in over 200 plays and musicals throughout his career. He is a BHP favorite, having played some of his most cherished roles. At the top of the list, Jeff cites Man In Chair in The Drowsy Chaperone, Morrie, in Tuesdays With Morrie, President Hockstader in Gore Vidal’s The Best Man, and Lurch in The Addams Family Musical. When we’re not in a pandemic, Jeff is an auctioneer for charity groups and helps to raise millions of dollars for good causes annually! He is the president of the Black Hills Playhouse Alumni Association. This is his 10th season with the BHP. This season he is heading up the box office, performing olios, and, as always, helping to raise much-needed funds for the BHP. Choreographer
Holly Knox Holly Knox is a lifelong BHP supporter and jazzed to be in the Playbill as a company member for the first time, choreographing “ILY... Change”. Lauren “LD” Dowell LD Dowell is a recent graduate from the University of South Dakota where she majored in Theatre Studies with an emphasis in stage managing, technical directing, and acting. Vince Frontino Chef Vince comes to the Black Hills Playhouse by way of Denver, Colorado. Chef Vince is a graduate of Pikes Peak community College, Cook Street School of Culinary Arts and has trained at Academia Barilla in Parma, Italy. He served in the military for 22 years where he was able to experience many cuisines that influence his daily menu, and he has a vast amount of experience that ranges from restaurants to institutional food service. We at the Black Hills Playhouse are excited to have him as our Head Chef!

Trevor Hannagan Graduating from the Conservatory of Theatre Arts at Webster University with a BFA degree in Technical Direction, Trevor prides himself on never shying away from a challenge, takes great satisfaction in his versatility, and in being able to work closely with design teams so the final product is something everyone involved can be proud to present on stage. Hailing originally from Chicago, when he’s not building, budgeting, or drafting, Trevor enjoys spending time writing Dungeons and Dragons adventures, practicing Mixology, and stargazing.
AME Intern, Sound Designer Nadirah T. Harper, a Chicago native, has just recently graduated from Southeast Missouri State University (SEMO) with a bachelor’s degree in Theater Design and Technology. This season will be Nadirah’s first post-graduate endeavor, and Altar Boyz will be her first professional sound design. Kristal Georgopoulos Kristal is excited to return for her 5th summer at the Black Hills Playhouse. It’s been a long hiatus but she is excited to get back to live, in-person theatre and is excited for the New Frontier Theatre at the Black Hills Playhouse! Egla Birmingham Hassan has spent most of her adult life engaged in some form of theatrical pursuit; whether that was exploring the relationship between religion and drama at a seminary, or performing with a small theatrical group in Pennsylvania, or writing plays for special audiences, Hassan has always looked for ways to say something about the human condition. Egla is an accomplished director and retired professor of theatre whose 32-year career at Western Illinois University included heading the MFA program in directing and helping young theatre artists to find their own voices. Jamie St. Clair-Linde Jamie was born and raised in Rapid City. She began playing the violin at the age of four with the Black Hills Suzuki School, and continued with the program for 14 years. She played in the South Dakota AllState Orchestra all four years of high school, placing in Honors Orchestra three times. She has also spent many years performing with the local Black Hills Symphony Orchestra. After attending many shows at the Black Hills Playhouse growing up, she's excited to be part of the production for this show.
Assistant Technical Director This is Andrew’s seventh year at the Black Hills Playhouse. He started as a carpenter intern, moved up to Master Carpenter, and this year has returned as the Assistant Tech Director. The Hills are one of his favorite places to be, it's where he has made friends, family, and even met his beautiful fiance.

Katy McGlaughlin When Katy isn’t frolicking in the woods at BHP she is the Production Manager at the University of Northern Iowa. She is also one of the co-authors of Stage Management Basics, A Primer for Performing Arts Stage Managers (2nd edition coming this fall). Working at BHP has been a dream for over a decade and she is thrilled to be joining the company for this momentous comeback season.

Josey returns to the Playhouse for her fifth season in these glorious Hills. Randy is the Associate Director of the Black Hills Playhouse, holding primary responsibility for business operations and physical plant improvements at the BHP campus. Randy works closely with Artistic Director, Dan Workman, to execute the season of professional summer stock theatre in Custer State Park. He works closely with the Physical Plant Committee and the SD Department of Game, Fish, & Parks on repairs and maintenance, as well as improvements to the campus. Ceslie Parker-Waller Ceslie Parker-Waller (Cindy Lou - The Marvelous Wonderettes) is a recent graduate of Kansas State University with a BA in Theatre and Dance. She is over the moon to return to the stage and bring these shows to life! During this year and a few months’ worth of an intermission, she had been working with her school’s theatre program to produce, host, and star in their newly created podcast, Kansas Theatre Works. Katryna began her first summer at the Playhouse as a stitching intern in 2018. After graduating in 2019 with a BFA degree in Theatre: Design/Technology from The Jeanine Larson Dobbins Conservatory of Theatre and Dance at Southeast Missouri State University she relocated to South Dakota working on the BHP Education team year-round as the Production Coordinator. Kat now serves as the Assistant Director of Education. She’s immensely grateful for the opportunity to further develop the Playhouse’s arts education initiatives with Dakota Players, BHP Jr. Camps, and The Expanding Stage. Lydia Prior Lydia Prior is a recent graduate of Minnesota State University, Mankato, having just received her Musical Theatre BFA in May. In her free time, Lydia enjoys writing music on her guitar, ukulele, and, her newest musical pursuit, her dulcimer guitar. After her time here, Lydia will further her career in the Twin Cities.

Lon Schnittgrund Lon is excited to play bass for a production at Black Hills Playhouse for the first time. Victor E. Shonk is an Assistant Professor at the University of South Dakota, teaching scenic design, scenic painting, and properties. Victor is a freelance scenic designer who has worked in many states across the nation designing theatre, television, and opera. This is Vic’s fourth season with the BHP. His designs at the BHP include: Spamalot, Shrek, Moonlight and Magnolias, Pageant, and Nunsense. He is a proud member of U.S.A., Local 829.

Drew is currently working toward his BFA in Musical Theater Performance at Nebraska Wesleyan University. In 2019, Drew was selected by Omaha Performing Arts as a National Finalist to represent the state of Nebraska at the Jimmy Awards in New York City. His favorite roles include: The Baker in Into the Woods, Orlando in As You Like It, Uncle Fester in The Addams Family, Willard in Footloose, Ham/Abel in Children Of Eden. He is a nationally known and award-winning theatre educator, director, choreographer, and actor from Rapid City. Locals may recognize him from Black Hills Community Theatre, Firehouse Brewing Theatre, Black Hills Symphony Orchestra, and Rapid City Central High School where he just finished his 17th year as Co-Chair of the Performing Arts Department and the Artistic Director of Theatre. Dan fuels the artistic vision of the BHP and with his wife, Deb, founded Dakota Players. His passion for the BHP goes beyond words. This is Dan’s 25th summer at the Black Hills Playhouse and his 12th as Artistic Director. Dan is an Associate Professor and the chair of the Department of Theatre at Augustana University where he teaches directing, acting, script analysis, and intro to theatre. He received his M.F.A. at the University of South Dakota. Over the years he has played many roles and directed many shows at the BHP!

The Black Hills Area Community Foundation holds the Landon Fund, an endowment created in memory of Stephen Landon, a talented scenic designer for the BHP. BHACF also supported BHP Education programs by helping to fund a Mac computer which made it possible to create online programs for school children during the pandemic. The foundation also supported the creation of the New Frontier Theatre making it possible for us to play in the Park this summer.
Since its earliest inception, the BHPAA organized reunions to bring new and old alums together. It has organized and executed several major projects for the good of the BHP including raising funds to build Haberman Hall, producing a fundraiser to buy drapes for the stage, organizing reunions (in 2021 over Zoom!), and, now, pledging to raise $75,000 for the $200,000 plus On Your Side project which will preserve and strengthen the Warren M. Lee Theatre by insulating and re-roofing the building and insulating Warren M. Lee Theatre. The BHP is grateful for all of their critical support over the years. The First Interstate Area Custer Fund has supported the Playhouse many times over the past decade at critical times. In 2021 they granted $10,000 to support the On Your Side: Siding and Insulation Campaign to strengthen and preserve the historic Warren M. Lee Theatre.
The Garrisons have provided significant annual support to the Playhouse for years which has resulted in the growth of innovative statewide arts programs and improvements to the BHP in Custer State Park. Every year this support is kindly matched by the Shell Foundation which increases their donation impact! In addition, in 2020 they donated funds for the development of the New Frontier Theatre to make sure that we were able to get back in the Park in 2021.
Walter Gislason and Raeanna Taake met at the Black Hills Playhouse in 1963 and were married in 1964, spending seven summers working at the Playhouse. Over the years they have provided generous annual operating and capital project support to the place which brought them together. For many years, Walt arranged for fresh picked corn on the cob, brats, and turkey to be flown to Rapid City to feed the company. The Gislasons are also generous supporters of the University of South Dakota College of Fine Arts.
Jeff loves the BHP and shows it in many ways as a donor, fundraiser, volunteer, and performer, working to beautify the BHP Campus by creating and maintaining memorial gardens and taking charge of the grounds. We are grateful to Jeff for sharing his passion for gardening and donating his time to make the magic happen. This year Jeff has added yet another lead role for the BHP as the Box Office Manager for this season. And as expected, he is terrific. Deb and her family are long-time supporters of the BHP. In 2020 Deb went the extra mile by offering to be a matching donor for the Day of Giving fundraiser, The Big Bounce. The event raised over $25,000 thanks to Deb’s generosity and inspiration to other donors.
Mark and Carolyn have a long history of attending and supporting the Black Hills Playhouse. Mark served on the board from 1985-1989. He organized fundraisers for the endowment, worked to improve the Playhouse theatre courtyard, and advocated with Governor Janklow to award a community development grant which retired outstanding debt and constructed new buildings. In recent years the Mollers have donated generously to upgrade the sound system in the theatre, helped build the New Frontier Theater to get us back in the Park in 2021, and contributed to the On Your Side Siding and Insulation project. Mark and Carolyn offered a match challenge which resulted in the Playhouse raising over $25,000 at the end of 2020. Friends like these are friends indeed.
Julie is a passionate advocate for arts and culture in our region, supporting many causes. Through the Oswald Family Foundation, she has donated significantly to the Black Hills Playhouse since 2013 for operations, program, and capital, strengthening and preserving the Playhouse for future generations. In addition, she is co-owner of The Custer Beacon, which provides the Southern Black Hills with a space to eat, drink, play, and be together. Friends and colleagues donated in memory of Jerry after he passed away on February 28th of this year. Jerry was passionate about the Playhouse and devoted incredible time and effort to saving and preserving it for future generations when its very existence was in question. Jerry and his wife Kelly helped support the Playhouse in many ways by attending fundraisers and donating to specific campaigns. See Season Dedication page 54.
NWE Property Management - Northwestern Engineering Company (“NWE”) incorporated in South Dakota in 1927 as an engineering and contracting company. The company’s early history as contractors evolved into real estate ownership and then property management. During 2020, when all income to the Black Hills Playhouse came to a screeching halt, we reached out to NWE with help in finding a new home for our offices. They came to our aid and donated approximately $13,000 in rental services to the BHP.

GCC Dacotah - Again during the pandemic, we had a summer with no patrons on the grounds and the perfect time to do lots of projects but no money to get the work done. GCC stepped up to help with demolition of the old sidewalk and hauling the cement away. The professionalism of the team provided by GCC made the construction of our new sidewalks a breeze. Thanks to this local help, the BHP saved $10,000 on services that we would have otherwise had to wait a few years to afford. Flooring America in Rapid City turned out to be a friend indeed to a friend in need. We needed flooring for our dorms and some other common areas. Rod Pettigrew and his team helped get us all the materials we needed for the project, totally donated. Randy Niles, our amazing Associate Director and Master Carpenter did all of the work. We are sure our company will notice all the beautiful floors on our campus this summer when they arrive. Once again, this donation was worth over 15K!

Jerry Wheeler
Jerry Wheeler passed away on February 28, 2021, at Home + Hospice House Monument Health in Rapid City, SD after a 22-year courageous battle with Parkinson's Disease. Jerry was a tenacious leader during his tenure as a trade association director and lobbyist; being recognized for his ability as a troubleshooter and problem-solver. Jerry was able to bring people together and understood the need for compromise when working through the legislative process. He earned a reputation as an honest and trustworthy lobbyist. Calm in the face of conflict, but strong and forceful when necessary, Jerry could fight the good fight, believing in the issues and people he represented. One of his strengths was knowing when to admit he didn't know something, but then used his energy to go find the answer. Jerry was serving as the President of the Black Hills Playhouse Board of Directors when the Playhouse was in danger of losing its lease to the historic site in Custer State Park in 2009. Working diligently, he lead the effort to save the Playhouse, enact legislation to preserve it, and to get the lease restored. Jerry’s storytelling was legendary and he is greatly missed by family and friends who enjoyed his sense of humor. We are grateful to his wife, Kelly, for establishing the Jerry Wheeler Memorial Fund and thank all who have donated in his honor to strengthen and preserve the Playhouse for future generations.

Barry LeBeau
The final curtain came down for Barry LeBeau March 21st, 2020 in Pierre, SD. He was an actor, musician, grant writer, program administrator, voracious reader, and 30 year lobbyist for the arts and the tribes in South Dakota. He died suddenly and peacefully in his apartment next to the Grand Opera House where he had performed often. He was 69. Barry had a career as a professional actor, speaker, and lobbyist. In many ways these lifelong passions complimented each other; he was as skilled with the rules of legislative process as he was quoting lines from Shakespeare. Barry earned his acting chops beginning with community theatre in Pierre but has credits in Sioux Falls, Minneapolis, Los Angeles, and at the Black Hills Playhouse in Custer State Park, perhaps his favorite venue. As a professional, he provided voice talent to several documentaries and television commercials, including the award winning short film Ghost Dance. He was the narrator for the feature length America's Great Indian Leaders, and America's Great Indian Nations. Film credits include Charles Nauman’s Yes, I am not Iktomi, Andrew Kightlinger's Dust Of War and Molli Cameron's Lakota Girls. Barry raised money and served on the Board (often as President) for countless South Dakota arts organizations including the South Dakota Arts Council, Black Hills Film Festival, Black Hills Playhouse Alumni Association, Northern Plains Indian Arts Market, and Pierre Players. As a lobbyist, Barry was a 30 year advocate for the Arts. But closer to his heart he was also a proud, tireless and effective advocate for South Dakota’s Indian County and its people. Barry worked as an Indian affairs lobbyist, a tribal affairs consultant and speaker, and a longtime program administrator for the United Sioux Tribes.
