A LETTER FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Thank you for joining us at the Black Hills Playhouse for our 77th season! Once again we have brought together an outstanding group of people to make it happen. The company comes from all over the United States with 16 states represented in 2023 bringing their talents to the Black Hills Playhouse. It is always a joy to meet these artists, get to know their passions and talents and get them to commit to a season with us. It is even better when these wonderful people want to come back for another year. We have many alums joining us this season!

We’ve described this season as “a different lens” inviting you to see the world from a different perspective. The Lifespan of a Fact shows things through the voice of an essayist wanting to tell an important story, a publisher with deadlines and a drive to sell magazines, and a fact-checker determined to get it right. In The Drowsy Chaperone, we get the perspective of a reclusive musical theatre enthusiast with a rich inner life.

Two of our shows this summer focus on women, one revealing history that has been lost, and in the other, the ongoing fight for equality. Lauren Gunderson has written several plays that tell the story of women in history who were not given proper credit for their contributions to the world in the history books. Silent Sky is one of those plays. 9 to 5 The Musical by Dolly Parton confronts sexism in the workplace.

As you look through the program, notice that 2 of our 4 directors are women, music director, choreographer and 7 out of 13 designers are women. This is a change that has happened over time. It wasn’t that we were setting a quota, it is a conscious effort to do our best to create a diverse company.

I sincerely appreciate the work of the board and staff who work year-round to prepare for the season of theatre and the donors who support our work. Your support means a great deal to the Black Hills Playhouse and we are grateful!

A LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

First and foremost I need to thank the fantastic people–volunteers, board, and staff– that I have the privilege of working with every day as we collaborate to produce innovative theatre programs statewide. The dedication of people who believe in this work is inspiring and I am grateful for all you do.

It takes a of lot support annually from a wide range of businesses, funders, and individual donors to make it possible to host talented artists from all over the country as we produce a fast and furious season in Custer State Park. In our 77th Season, we continue the tradition our founder, Doc Lee, initiated in 1946.

Parallel with the season we are producing summer arts camps for youth, programs for people of all abilities, and touring theatre education programs statewide in our quest to strengthen South Dakota communities.

The speed at which changes are happening in our world is mindboggling some days. Getting away to the theatre can provide a respite from a mind-boggling world. Theatre can also provide opportunities to think about things differently as we ponder topics presented by talented artists and experience it with a community of our peers.

I hope you enjoy your time with us and come away with new insights and find respite in our beautiful corner of the world. Thank you for choosing the Black Hills Playhouse!

BHP Family of Programs

We engage diverse people with extraordinary theatre programs to strengthen communities.

Summer Stock Theatre in Custer State Park

One man’s dream of a little theater in the woods took flight. The Black Hills Playhouse (BHP) began as a dream of Dr. Warren M. (Doc) Lee of the University of South Dakota. His goals were to create high-quality entertainment for people in the Black Hills while providing training and employment opportunities for students and theatre professionals. The BHP has been a part of the College of Fine Arts at USD since 1946.

Each year, auditions are held across the country in search of talented actors, directors, designers, technicians, and interns. Artists reside in dorms in Custer State Park, rehearse on site, and performances are held Tuesday - Sunday throughout the summer in a rustic and sweet 345 seat house. It is the tradition of generations of friends and families to attend shows at the BHP in Custer State Park. People often bring picnics to Hab Hall, enjoy the offerings of the BHP Snack Bar, and take time to relax before enjoying a show in this glorious location.

Dakota Players Tours + Online Programs:

Booking now open for Fall ‘23–Spring ‘24!

23 Years of Innovative Programs

Dakota Players teams travel with sets, lights, and costumes to create original musicals in schools and communities throughout the state. These include up to 55 participants per community with suitable parts designed for every age and skill level. The youth work with professional actor/directors in dynamic, fun sessions which help young people learn, bond as a team, and grow. Workshops and online theatre experiences are tailored to community needs. 2023 shows include Space School Musical and On the Road to Bremen Town.

BHP Jr. Camps: Making Memories for a Lifetime

These camps encourage creativity and exploration while giving students the opportunity to see the world through the diverse lens of the performing arts. BHP Jr. Camps are the perfect choice for families seeking a safe, friendly, and creative camp, combined with dynamic programs designed to meet students wherever they are in their arts journey. Held at Placerville Camp in the Black Hills, with field trips to the Black Hills Playhouse, kids get all of the traditional outdoor camp activities, make new friends and create memories for a lifetime.

The Expanding Stage: Inclusive. Empowering. Extraordinary.

Through innovative partnerships with DakotAbilities and LifeScape, teaching artists of the Black Hills Playhouse are transforming lives through theatre programs created for people of all abilities. Weeks of classes lead to performance for families and friends at Augustana University or Longfellow Elementary Center.

Black Hills Playhouse Season 77• 6

SILENT SKY JUNE 9–JULY 2

performed in repertory with The Lifespan of a Fact | Show Title Sponsor: Kahler and Associates

A soaring, music-rich, female-led science drama about Henrietta Swan Leavitt and the forgotten women’s faces of science working at the dawn of modern astronomy to classify the stars. This luminously beautiful play explores a woman’s place as defined by men in society during a time of immense scientific discoveries. With music and math bursting forth onstage, Henrietta and her female peers change the way we understand both the heavens and Earth. RATED PG

THE LIFESPAN OF A FACT JUNE 10–JUNE 30

by Jeremy Kareken, David Murrell, and Gordon Farrell

performed in repertory with Silent Sky | Show Title Sponsor: South Dakota News Watch

Based on a true story, this 2018 critically acclaimed Broadway play is a fast-paced story exploding with blistering comedy and timely relevance. Facts become blurry when they’re twisted into fiction in the high-stakes world of publishing. The demanding editor-in-chief of a high-end magazine hires a determined millennial fact-checker to work on a groundbreaking essay written by a famous author. The deadline is tight, the essay is dense, and everyone must make a good faith effort in telling the story honestly. But the overly eager Jim’s over-the-top fact-checking creates the ultimate showdown of fact versus fiction. RATED PG-13*

*Advisory: The Lifespan of a Fact is suitable for adults and older teenage audiences. Characters lock horns in a debate of fact vs. fiction, and they drop some F-bombs in the process. Their explosive dialogue features other mature themes, including discussions of suicide.

THE DROWSY CHAPERONE JULY 9–JULY 23

Music and Lyrics by Lisa Lambert & Greg Morrison

Book by Bob Martin & Don McKellar

Show Title Sponsor: Coca Cola Bottling Company, High Country

When a die-hard theatre fan plays his favorite cast album, the characters come to life in this hilarious musical farce featuring BHP fan-favorite, Jeff Kingsbury. This loving send-up of the Jazz Age musical features one show-stopping song and dance number after another. Mix in two lovers on the eve of their wedding, a bumbling best man, a desperate theatre producer, a not-sobright hostess, two gangsters posing as pastry chefs, a misguided Don Juan, and an intoxicated chaperone, and you have the ingredients for an evening of madcap delight. RATED PG

9 TO 5 THE MUSICAL JULY 30–AUGUST 12

Music and Lyrics by Dolly Parton • Book by Patricia Resnick

Show Title Sponsor: Independent Bookkeeping + Tax

Upbeat, funny, and entertaining, featuring the music of Dolly Parton and based on the 1980 20th Century Fox film. Three secretaries band together after a series of injustices - and an accidental act of retribution - to take down their sexist boss, Franklin Hart Jr. While he is indisposed, the trio run the company with working conditions that, in 2023, still remain a fantasy for most women: job flexibility, free health care, free daycare, and equal pay. RATED PG

The inviting and unpretentious atmosphere of our rural theater in Custer State Park is something you simply won’t find in the big city. From buffalo and other wildlife wandering through camp and the smell of the pines, to the friendly faces of welcoming staff, the Black Hills Playhouse is an oasis where people relax and enjoy good company and good theatre.

A LETTER FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT

On behalf of the Black Hills Playhouse Board of Directors, welcome to the Playhouse and its 77th season! We thank you for your continued support, and if you are a new audience member, thank you and welcome. As a Playhouse company member from 1987 to 1993, I had the good fortune to meet and work with artists who changed my life both personally and professionally.

The Board of Directors is an incredible group of Playhouse supporters, dedicated to ensuring its success far into the future. It is a pleasure for all of us to work with Linda, Dan, Bruce & USD, and the entire BHP staff who are so committed to the Playhouse’s success. The culmination of all their hard work during the “off season” is the magic, enjoyment, and inspiration audiences experience during the summer season of shows.

The ongoing legacy of the BHP and Doc Lee’s dream is the transforming effect “Theatre in the Hills” has on the lives of each season’s company members and the patrons who experience the extraordinary theatre produced each summer.

We look forward to seeing you in the summer and for your support of the Playhouse and its mission to bring outstanding theatre statewide each year. Enjoy!

SILENT SKY DIRECTOR’S NOTE

What I love and admire about Lauren Gunderson’s work is her ability to transform history into something concrete, living, and beautiful. She takes women forgotten to society (maybe even some history books) and gives these remarkable women new life. Henrietta Leavitt is no exception. She has agency, brains, and passion. When it comes to Silent Sky, we cover twenty years of Henrietta’s life in two acts. We move through time quickly, efficiently and with care. We see Henri discover herself, influence those around her, and also her growth as a human and astronomer. This play is a dazzling, mystical, and penetrating story about a woman experiencing true love, for this play is a romance. A romance between a woman and her calling as an astronomer. A romance that is felt between characters, a romance of dreams and passion. It is a romance amongst the universe. It is a play about a journey of discovery, of facts, and faith.

THE LIFESPAN OF A FACT DIRECTOR’S NOTE

I am thrilled to be directing The Lifespan of a Fact. I love how this play explores the complex relationship between journalism and storytelling. It challenges us to question our perceptions of what we think of as fact vs. a greater truth. Deception and truth in society through newspapers, gossip, etc. is not new. It has probably been going on since an early society had competing agendas about how big the saber tooth tiger was they hunted that day. In today’s society this debate is even more apparent.

Two quotes from the play that I find insightful regarding its argument:

“The wrong facts get in the way of the story”

“By changing paint colors and statistics... by misrepresenting official and searchable documents, you undermine your argument, you undermine society’s trust in itself. Which is why facts have to be the final measure of truth”

JUNE 10–JUNE 30

THE LIFESPAN OF A FACT

The story leaves the decision to us as the what should be done, I hope it makes the conversation lively on your way home.

THE DROWSY CHAPERONE DIRECTOR’S NOTE

Welcome to the Black Hills Playhouse! Thank you for taking the time to join us for The Drowsy Chaperone! Each time I get to work on this quirky little show, I find something new to love. This story of an isolated man who finds connection through sharing his favorite musical always manages to leave audiences with “a little tune to carry in (your) head”. This show, full to the brim with musical theater homages and nuggets of old Broadway has at its center, a universal reminder of how the art we love equips us in our day-to-day lives.

Simon Callow said, “To enter a theatre for a performance is to be inducted into a magical space, to be ushered into the sacred arena of the imagination.” I hope you find the magical space of imagination in this delightful show.

JULY 9–JULY 23

THE DROWSY CHAPERONE

When a die-hard theatre fan plays his favorite cast album, the characters come to life in this hilarious musical farce featuring BHP fan-favorite, Jeff Kingsbury. This loving send-up of the Jazz Age musical features one show-stopping song and dance number after another. Mix in two lovers on the eve of their wedding, a bumbling best man, a desperate theatre producer, a not-so-bright hostess, two gangsters posing as pastry chefs, a misguided Don Juan, and an intoxicated chaperone, and you have the ingredients for an evening of madcap delight.

9 TO 5 THE MUSICAL DIRECTOR’S NOTE

Welcome to 9 to 5 or should we say Dolly Parton’s world?! This musical based off the 1980 film premiered on Broadway in 2009. The story that now spans over 40 years is still as relevant today as it was in 1980. In a way that only Dolly Parton can, she has crafted a show that celebrates women and has three women at the heart of this story. Violet, Judy and Doralee join together to scheme how to take down the vile Mr. Hart and in the process find solace in each other.

This musical is hilarious and a great time, but at the heart of this story is the idea that everyone deserves a seat at the table. We hope you enjoy your evening of laughs and music from Dolly Parton and just like her we hope you celebrate the women at the center of it all. In Dolly we trust!

9 TO 5 THE MUSICAL

Upbeat, funny, and entertaining, featuring the music of Dolly Parton and based on the 1980 20th Century Fox film. Three secretaries band together after a series of injustices - and an accidental act of retribution - to take down their sexist boss, Franklin Hart Jr. While he is indisposed, the trio run the company with working conditions that, in 2023, still remain a fantasy for most women: job flexibility, free health care, free daycare, and equal pay.
