Welcome to the 74th Season From the Artistic Director... Greetings Friends, And welcome to the 74th season of the Black Hills Playhouse. 74! That’s an impressive number. If that was our wind speed we would qualify as a hurricane. So, welcome to the hurricane season of the Black Hills Playhouse! As I write this at the beginning of May, I hope I am not tempting fate to rain disaster upon us. I don’t think I am. But the activity that surrounds getting a season together, the preparation that happens before the season, and all the activity during the season can often feel like a hundred things are swirling around in the maelstrom desperately wanting to be put in their place. And I love it! We have been preparing for this season, since the start of last summer. It takes time, and teamwork, and input from multiple sources. And here are some of them that you should be aware of: • We have a fantastic Board of Directors. These volunteers are passionate about the playhouse, they share their time, talents, and wisdom in the pursuit of furthering the important work we do. • Our Executive Director, Linda Anderson, has vision, tenacity, and a desire to have the work of the BHP make an impact on as many lives as possible. Linda is an inspiring leader who challenges everyone around her to make a difference. • Debra Workman is our Director of Education, and she amazes me with all that she, and the education department, make happen all across the state. It is truly transformative theatre. If you don’t know much about what we do all year round, you should check out Black Hills Playhouse Education on social media. • Darla Drew Lerdal radiates enthusiasm as she makes friends for the BHP through sponsorships or advertising, and she is constantly on the lookout for new and innovative partnerships. • The office staff of Kristal Georgopoulos and Jon Kern Anderson make sure that all the details are taken care of, including all of the pre-season ticket sales and the important interactions with you. • The Dakota Players tour team, and the education “squad” who do amazing work all across the state as they bring inclusive theatre to South Dakota’s youth and people with disabilities. • The directors, designers, actors, technicians, chefs, and customer service staff. These amazing and talented artists come together to make our summer season spectacular. I am happy and grateful to stand in the eye of the storm with these awesome individuals. Why do we do it? Because we believe in our mission statement and the power of the arts to “engage diverse people and strengthen South Dakota communities.” Thanks for being here and being a part of 74 years!

From the Executive Director One Man’s Dream Black Hills Playhouse 1946 “My first steps were shaky and uncertain, but guided by faith and generosity. My playground was small, very small…a dormitory, a rehearsal room, and one building which had to serve as my set construction shop, costume shop and prop room. My debut, social acceptance and need for an ever-increasing circle of friends was of first and greatest importance. How to present me to the people of the Black Hills area and its many visitors…How to interest them in me and my future? It was decided that I would go to them, and introduce myself. Legitimate theatre, real flesh and blood actors and actresses, was quite an innovation in the Hills in 1946. The constant travel, work, rehearsing, and performing was exhausting, but my family believed in me and did not falter.” One Man’s Dream By Dorothy Ross Delicate The Black Hills Playhouse delivers exceptional theatre programs that engage diverse people and strengthen South Dakota communities. It all started with Doc Lee, a professor from USD and founder of the Black Hills Playhouse, who wanted to create employment opportunities for artists and provide high-quality entertainment for residents and visitors to the Black Hills of South Dakota. Workforce development • Young artists get opportunities to learn their craft from seasoned professionals in Custer State Park each summer. • We employ creative professionals in Sioux Falls and Rapid City who prepare for each season, fundraise, and implement education programs statewide. • We employ artists who come together each summer dedicated to creating shows with high artistic standards for over 17,000 audience members. Health and well-being • BHP programs enhance communication and problem-solving skills and encourage creative thinking while encouraging healthy expression, increasing confidence and improving cognitive function for kids and people we serve with disabilities. Education • Approximately 1600 K-12 students in communities large and small get access to arts curriculum which meets state standards through our touring outreach company • 3 performing arts camps teach creative skills, problem-solving, movement, and self- confidence to kids in grades 5 - 12 • Adults with disabilities take theatre classes and perform 4 -5 times a year In this, our 74th year, we continue to believe in Doc Lee’s dream. We still ask the question of how best to present our theatre to the people of South Dakota and to its many visitors in the Black Hills and are grateful for the dedicated legions of people who care about the Black Hills Playhouse. I have the privilege of being surrounded by an incredible staff who live and breathe the joy of theatre and creativity in action. We are thankful for fantastic donors, board members, and volunteers who make it possible. And we are especially grateful to the artists who share their talents and create the beautiful theatre we see on our stages. Thanks for coming out to enjoy live theatre in Custer State Park. In the end, it takes all of us to keep the dream alive. We are grateful for your support!

The Black Hills Playhouse and Black Hills Energy, in association with TigerLion Arts, present Nature, an outdoor walking play celebrating the dynamic connection between humanity and the natural world in five performances. This profoundly moving experience is coming to the State Game Lodge in Custer State Park during the 2019 Labor Day weekend. A professional ensemble of actors takes the audience on a journey through the natural environment as scenes unfold around them. Bagpipes, ancient flutes, drums, and rich choral arrangements are intricately woven into the experience. This poignant story of Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau, is heralded as “One of the Most Striking Performances” by the Minneapolis Star Tribune, and by critics as “…truly one of the special and unique theatre experiences ever…” Nature is an extraordinary, family-friendly journey that co-mingles story, spirit, and nature, as a means to reconnect its audience with the natural world. This original work is collaboratively created with writer/actor Tyson Forbes, a direct descendant of Ralph Waldo Emerson. the adventures of
DIRECTOR’S NOTES Robin Hood. The very name conjures up adventure. And sword fights. And bows and arrows. But most importantly, the name invokes heroism. What does it take to risk everything you have to do the right thing? To risk your life to look out for the little guy? To stand up for the underdog? In terms that today’s kids might understand, Robin Hood is our first superhero.

So approaching this play I felt a little awed – it’s a big responsibility to live up to. And it’s a story I’ve lived with a long time. When I told them I was directing this play, my parents sent me an old volume of Robin Hood that was first my father’s when he was a kid, and then mine – the pictures inside it are the classic ideal of Robin Hood, in the green tights and the pointed hat with the feather. So I realized that whatever we did with this production, there was a legacy we had to live up to, because everyone has an image of Robin Hood, and we had to honor that. And doing a Ken Ludwig script, I knew it was going to be a fun adventure. I was lucky enough to perform in Ludwig’s version of The Three Musketeers at BHP in 2012, and rarely have I enjoyed myself so much when working in the theatre. That’s also when I learned about BHP and what a magic place it is, for both the company and the audience (and the buffalo, of course). It’s honoring all those things that guided my approach to the play, to capture the magic that the name of Robin Hood invokes, to live up to the legacy of the BHP, and to bring this superhero to life. I hope you enjoy the show as much as I did putting it on stage

Book and Lyrics by Bill Russell Music by Henry Krieger Additional book material by Bill Condon
Based on the true story of conjoined twins Violet and Daisy Hilton, Side Show is a moving portrait of two women joined at the hip whose extraordinary bondage brings them fame but denies them love. Told almost entirely in song, the show follows their progression from England to America, around the vaudeville circuit, and to Hollywood on the eve of their appearance in the 1932 movie Freaks. Dramatic Musical Rated PG-13

DIRECTOR’S NOTES Daisy and Violet Hilton moved into my head over 25 years ago and have never left. I immediately said yes to the idea of writing a musical about these extraordinary sisters who were the highest paid act in the history of vaudeville. I thought two actors moving and singing together would be strikingly theatrical and metaphorically rich. It was five and a half years from the time the composer Henry Krieger and I started writing our first songs for the show until it opened on Broadway. I did numerous drafts of the book and we wrote many more songs than ended up in the show (my husband put together a c.d. of songs we’d cut which was over 90 minutes long – and that didn’t even include all the songs we’d written). Then in 2007, the Oscar-winning screenwriter and director, Bill Condon, (Beauty and the Beast, Gods and Monsters) agreed to direct a revival. I assumed we’d make some tweaks, but we ended up re-examining every syllable and note and making substantial changes throughout. At an early rehearsal of the new version our brilliant orchestrator, Harold Wheeler, was in tears. “I was afraid making changes might damage it, but the heart is still there and the show is better!” I couldn’t be happier to direct this show near where I grew up. If you write for television or film everyone can eventually see your work. But theater is site specific and I am thrilled to be able to share this musical and the Hilton Sisters’ story with so many friends and supporters in the Black Hills.

DIRECTOR’S NOTES “Dancing Queen,” “Money, Money, Money,” “Take a Chance on Me,” “Honey, Honey,” “SOS’ how many of these songs can you sing along to? Welcome to Mamma Mia! and our fun game of, “Who’s Your Daddy?” This musical set on an island in Greece explodes with fun, dancing and celebration. Donna runs a tavern and her daughter Sophie is getting married and wants her father to walk her down the aisle. The trouble is she doesn’t know who her father is! The musical Mamma Mia! originally premiered in London on the West End and is one of the longest running productions in the West End’s history. It also had a long run on Broadway and many successful National Tours. Mamma Mia! could also be considered one of the most successful jukebox musicals; utilizing the songs from Swedish pop group ABBA over 60 million people have seen Mamma Mia! worldwide! This musical is just plain fun! It is set in a beautiful location with wonderful songs I hope you will sing along to. I recently had the good fortune to visit Greece and saw the beautiful islands of that country. While there I finally understood the beauty of the island and the gorgeous Grecian light that offers the most romantic backdrop for our setting. Welcome to our party! We hope to sweep you away on our magical journey and that you’ll be a dancing queen by the end of the night!

Steel Magnolias is the bittersweet story of six women who gather under the dryers at Truvy’s Beauty Salon to share gossip, laughter, recipes and beauty secrets on four significant days across three years of their lives. When tragedy strikes, they face it with sass and strength, supporting each other through thick and thin. By turns hilarious and poignant, Steel Magnolias is a heartwarming portrait of friendship and love. Dramatic Play Rated PG-13

DIRECTOR’S NOTES In many American cities this year movie theatres will be celebrating the thirtieth anniversary of the first viewing of Steel Magnolias. But this story of much love and compassion started out as a stage play. As the story goes, Robert Harling, the author of this comedy-drama, lost his sister to complications from diabetes, and he needed a way to eulogize her, so that the world would know what a marvelous person she was. The result is this engaging story of the bond between these tough as nails Southern belles. The characters of this story are almost our friends, or at least, they are people we know, or wouldn’t mind knowing. Steel Magnolias has also intrigued audiences in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Japan, Poland, Sweden and France. It seems like this play is beyond popular. Besides he ability to make us laugh, it is obviously addressing some universal condition or hunger – the need for friendship. The Mayo Clinic recently published an article that advocated for friendship as a health benefit. It spoke about friends as the celebration we all need during the good times and the support during tragic times. The article mentioned studies that show older adults, with rich social lives live longer than their peers with fewer connections. The six characters in this play seem to emulate the characteristics of good friendship, and so they are reminding us that we, too, can enjoy the benefits of kindness, and general wellbeing that comes from nurturing friendship.

Season Dedication We dedicate this season to friends lost and remembered.
Marshall Eric Johnson
Marshll Eric Johnson grew up in Miller, South Dakota and attended the University of South Dakota where he studied Theater and Music. His first major role at the Black Hills Playhouse was as Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof in 1971 when he was 19. During more than 20 summers over the next five decades he produced and/or performed in several season warmers and played numerous other major roles, becoming a favorite of Playhouse audiences. His last appearance on the BHP Stage was in “Retro All Stars,” a program of music and stories to “warm up” for the 2018 season. An entrepreneurial “theator,” Eric was a performer, director, and vocal coach and produced and appeared in many independent musical shows with friends and colleagues in South Dakota and New York. He served as Managing Artistic Director of Black Hills Community Theatre from 2000 to 2005, and in the years after, directed several summer productions at La Comedia Dinner Theatre in Springboro, Ohio. Eric spent many years performing in New York - on and off Broadway - returning periodically to the Black Hills to perform and visit friends and family. He was a mentor and inspiration to all who knew him. Upon Eric’s passing a young friend wrote: “Eric was not only hugely talented, but an amazing person. People have been posting memories of him … and they all share common themes of immense talent, great generosity, friendship, mentorship, love and support. He was truly one of the best of us and, when I remember him, I can’t help but think of him as an example of how people should care for one another. I will pay his kindness forward, not just as a tribute to him, but because that is the type of person I want to be. Some of us have to work and try to be like that. Eric was a natural. He left this world brighter, and those he came in contact with, better.”

Graham Thatcher
Neil Graham Thatcher saw his first production at the Black Hills Playhouse when he was ten years old. The year was 1949 and the show was in the tent across the road from Legion Lake. (The family still has the 8mm home movie of him and his during that visit.) For many years his family vacationed at nearby Camp Remington, affording Graham the chance to see many shows each summer and sustain his theatrical interests. In 1963 he returned to the BHP as a member of the company and spent many summers after that playing major roles, directing and teaching. His last appearance on the BHP stage was in 2015 as Malachy McCourt in A Couple of Blaguards, a fundraiser produced by the BHP Alumni Association. Graham served as Artistic Director of Group Theatre (now Black Hills Community Theatre) from 1976 to 1981. During his lifetime he taught theatre at several colleges and universities in South Dakota and Minnesota. From 1994 until his death in 2018, he was the Artistic Director and primary performer for Periaktos Productions, the company he began with his wife, Anna Marie, producing theatrical programs as a teaching tool for Continuing Legal Education. Since appearing in his first acting role at the age of five, Graham performed in or directed over 250 community, university and professional theatre productions. He was also an author, playwright, and mentor and received several honors for his work, including the Governor’s Award in 2017 for Outstanding Support of the Arts by An Individual. Perhaps his most important role was as a life-long educator - in and out of the classroom. One former student commented, “He was bold, gifted, opinionated, honest, intelligent and such an incredible actor and director. His life was varied and amazing from teaching to professional acting to spending his later years teaching lawyers and others to be better communicators. … We feel the loss of this great person whose spirit will remain with us forever … Many people were influenced, inspired and encouraged by him. His reach and impact was enormous in so many ways.”
Dr. Charles Gwinn
Dr. Charles Gwinn of Rapid City, who died Jan. 2, 2019, at age 89, was a longtime supporter of the Black Hills Playhouse. He and his wife, Norma (who died in 2014), started coming to shows soon after the family moved to the Black Hills for Chuck to practice surgery. They often brought some of their young children; their oldest son’s first BHP memory is “Plain and Fancy,” in 1962. Charles and Norma took in theater, opera, and music in big cities where he attended medical meetings, but primarily they were faithful patrons of Black Hillsbased entertainment and cultural events. Along with the Playhouse productions, they and their family enjoyed the Black Hills Symphony, Community Theater, Chamber Music Society, the summer outdoor band concerts, and more. After decades of attending productions, the Gwinn family has remembered the BHPH with a bequest to keep summer theater thriving in the Black Hills.
