Welcome to the 72nd Season From the Artistic Director... Welcome to the Black Hills Playhouse! You are going to love the wonderful variety of shows we have for you this year. And, once again, we have brought together an outstanding group of people to make it happen. The company comes from all over the United States and a few from other countries. This year, well over one thousand people auditioned and applied to work with us and winning a spot is a very competitive process. We have artists from twenty-one different states and three countries who bring their talents to the Black Hills Playhouse. It is always a joy to meet them, get to know their passions and get them to commit to a season through the audition and interview process. It is even better when these wonderful people choose to come back for another year...or in the case of at least one company member, twenty-seven. We have several people who have been here for multiple summers as shop heads, technicians, directors, designers, and actors. I am always grateful for these incredible people, for their passion, their artistry, and their humanity. They make my job fun and I know they will always do their best (which is incredible). It’s the 72nd Season of the Black Hills Playhouse, and from all of us onstage and off, welcome and enjoy the show!

Dan Workman

From the Executive Director... In 2017 I am pleased to be entering my seventh year at the BHP and extremely pleased to report that we are stronger than ever because of you and your participation in this beautiful 72 year tradition in Custer State Park. In this day of digital everything, distractions, political divide and unrest in the world, places like the BHP are a gift and a refuge. When you come to visit, you intentionally do something good for yourself which is so essential for balance and quality of life. Making plans with friends and family, you drive through a beautiful forest, reconnecting with nature. Most importantly, you join with a community of people to see theatre, relax, laugh and let go of stress and your regular routine. We want to thank you for investing in us and investing in you. We’re worth it!

Mission & History

The Black Hills Playhouse transforms lives through professional theatre productions, partnerships, and education programs. It all started in 1934 at a Civilian Conservation Camp called Camp Lodge in the Black Hills. Men, hired by the government to help their families during The Great Depression, lived in the camp, fanning out during the day to build much of the infrastructure that exists in the Park today. Dr. Warren M. Lee of the University of South Dakota dreamed of creating a fine arts center which would employ artists in South Dakota and provide high-quality entertainment for people in the Black Hills Region. He founded the company at the Camp Lodge site in 1946 partnering with the University and the State of South Dakota. 72 years later, the Black Hills Playhouse continues to further the dream of Doc Lee. While things have changed over the years, the spirit of the original BHP continues every year when artists from all over the country descend on this hallowed ground to collaborate in producing shows enjoyed by over 16,000 patrons annually. The Black Hills Playhouse has evolved and expanded with offices in Rapid City, Sioux Falls and in Custer State Park. In 2017 we are working with partners to produce summer stock theatre, two performing arts camp for kids, after-school classes, camps and classes for people with disabilities and our touring residency program, Dakota Players, which takes educational theatre opportunities throughout the region to communities large and small. The Playhouse is supported in part by an active and passionate Black Hills Playhouse Alumni Association, Friends of the BHP donors, an incredible Board of Directors, the University of South Dakota, Custer State Park and many advertisers and sponsors who believe in the power of theatre to transform lives.

DIRECTOR’S NOTES Since the beginning of human existence storytelling has been an integral part of communication, entertainment, and connection. Stories of heritage passed down from generations or anecdotes shared between two people, these are what create the building blocks of our lives. As children we make up stories and act them out as make believe and a form of play. As adults we at times ignore our sense of play and too often forget the wonder and joy that comes from a simple story. In a story anything can happen, mermaids exist, pirates fight, and boys can fly.

Book by Rick Elice Music by Wayne Barker

In our play we seek to explore the beloved story written by J.M. Barrie about a boy named Peter Pan. The story is timeless and has seen many iterations including cartoons, musicals, and films. A boy who won’t grow up along with his trusty group the lost boys and his fearless sidekick Tinkerbell befriend Wendy and introduce her to the magical Neverland. Most people know this timeless tale, but the question is how does Peter become Peter Pan? Here we attempt to tell a different story about Peter. We ask you to join us on a magical adventure, and help us fight pirates, and explore starstuff. And, if we are lucky and really believe in fairies, we will help a boy find his true place in a magical world.

DIRECTOR’S NOTES To truly understand why we love Young Frankenstein, and why it is a vital part of American pop culture, we must pick the mind of its creator - the inimitable and irreverent Mel Brooks. Brooks’ humor has been called base and childish, but as Brooks himself said: “I’ll accept bad taste in a minute, as long as there’s great minds and performances.”

THE NEW MEL BROOKS MUSICAL

Book by Mel Brooks & Thomas Meehan Music & Lyrics by Mel Brooks Original Direction & Choreography by Susan Stroman

INTENDED FOR MATURE AUDIENCES It’s alive! This electrifying adaptation of Mel Brooks’ monstrously funny film will leave you in stitches. Anyone who saw the talented casts of the original 1974 movie of Young Frankenstein with Gene Wilder, Madeline Kahn, and Marty Feldman, or the 2007 Broadway musical adaptation with Roger Bart, Sutton Foster, and Andrea Martin knows how hilariously true this Brooks formula plays. Brooks also said “If you’re quiet, you’re not living. You’ve got to be noisy, and colorful, and lively.” Without question, every musical, dance, and comedic moment in Young Frankenstein embraces this sentiment. However, this show is not simply one crass, bombastic one-liner after another. Brooks is smart and talented enough to create characters and write dialogue that draw us in and make us care about their lives, loves, and losses. In the end though, high drama this ain’t. As Brooks famously said: “Tragedy is when I cut my finger. Comedy is when you fall into an open sewer and die.” Young Frankenstein is a wonderful, glorious, open sewer, and I invite you all to fall in with us, grab a hold of something floating nearby, and enjoy the ride!

SHOW NOTES Grease is a timelessly funny story of 1950s teen love, cliques, and peer pressure has gained fans in every generation, thanks to charming characters, catchy music and endlessly quotable lines and has long been a favorite musical of audiences everywhere.

Book, music & lyrics by Jim Jacobs & Warren Casey Lively three time Tony nominated Broadway musical portraying early rockers with zip, charm, incredible music and high-energy dance numbers. This popular musical features Rydell High’s senior class of 1959 including the hot-rodding “Burger Palace Boys” and their gum-snapping, hip-shaking “Pink Ladies”. It had its inception in Chicago in 1971, which turned into an 8 month run and a very quick transfer to New York. In New York the production earned 7 Tony Award nominations and ran on Broadway for over 8 years and 3,300 performances. Since then it has had two major productions in London’s West End, two very successful revivals on Broadway, and several national and international tours. And, of course, the ever popular movie that came out in 1978 was a blockbuster! Grease is beloved for its romanticized view of the 1950’s and the slightly naughty way of showing us teenage angst, love, rebellion, and humor. We hope you enjoy our production.

DIRECTOR’S NOTES Farce (fahrs) 1. a comic dramatic work using buffoonery and horseplay and typically including crude characterization and ludicrously improbable situations. synonyms: comedy, slapstick, burlesque, vaudeville, buffoonery “the stories approach farce”

by Paul Slade Smith Two cops. Three crooks, Eight doors, Go. Two hours of nonstop hilarity and mayhem. Dazzlingly funny, with one silly bit overlapping the next...think Marx Brothers updated in tempo and relevance for today’s world. Rated PG-13

Farcical theatre traces its roots back to the ancient Greeks and the tradition of the satyr play. Usually associated with low humor and improbable situations, Farce has been a counterpoint to the great tragedies throughout theatre history. It was popular in Rome with the Atellan plays. England had its fair share including William Skakespeare’s The Comedy of Errors. The term “farce” is generally associated with France and was coined in the 1500’s and later applied to the works of Cornielle, Moliere, and Feydeau. And the screwball comedies of the 1930’s in America also follow the tradition. So, it makes perfect sense that we include a farce in our season every 2-3 years. Unnecessary Farce was first performed in 2006 and uses the classic format in a contemporary American setting. The author’s setting of the play is a small city in an unspecified state. For our production, we decided to be a little more specific and bring the action a little closer to home. Please note that it is not our intention to insinuate that any of our elected officials are factually represented. All characters appearing in this work are fictitious. Any resemblance to real persons, living or dead, is purely coincidental.
