A Commitment to Excellence: More Than Just Windows

Roots

and Growth: A Family's Vision

Huey Long Co. Inc. was founded in 1962 by Huey and Shirley Long, in Scottsbluff, Nebraska.

Within just a few short years, they evolved to become Heartland Pella. Huey and Shirley Long, the step-grandparents of the current owners, laid the foundations of a business that would evolve and expand over time. Their son Larry Long took the reins in 1996. After retiring in 2017 he passed the business on to his stepchildren Shane and Jared Regelin. Heartland Pella expanded from Grand Island to Rapid City in 1998 and, more recently, to North Dakota in 2002. The Heartland Pella team proudly Celebrated 60 years of service to the region in 2022.

This transition from one generation to the next isn't just a change in ownership; it's a testament to a business environment and culture that nurtures longevity and dedication. Heartland Pella is not just a company; it's a family, and its employees are integral to that familial fabric.

Community Initiatives and Social Responsibility: Giving Back Matters

Heartland Pella isn't just about windows; it's about community. Shane's involvement with the Black Hills Home Builders and various non-profit endeavors underscores the company's commitment to social responsibility. Being an American made company, manufacturing in Pella, Iowa and 6 other states, reflects its dedication to sustainability.

Heartland Pella doesn't just provide windows; it provides solutions that define the future.

A Unique Work Culture: Where Every Employee Is Family

It's not just a business; it's a family. Each employee is considered a family member, and decisions are driven by what makes sense for the collective. The low turnover, knowledgeable sales staff, and managers who've grown within the company reflect a unique work culture that values relationships over transactions.

Embracing Technology: A Seamless Blend of Old and New

Heartland Pella has embraced technology to stay competitive, providing in-person, hands-on bids while incorporating digital resources for training. This balance ensures the company evolves with the times while maintaining the personal touch that defines its service.

Choosing the Black Hills: A Hub of Quality and Service

Choosing the Black Hills as the company's location was a strategic decision. While Nebraska offers more window and door volume, the Black Hills' central location serves as a hub for the region, aligning with Heartland Pella’s commitment to accessibility and service for its three state region.

Conclusion

As custodians of a rich legacy, Shane and Jared Regelin, alongside the entire Heartland Pella family, embody a commitment to crafting more than just windows and doors; they are architects of enduring legacies. Their dedication to quality, a vibrant community spirit, and a tradition of innovation have etched Heartland Pella’s story into the fabric of each community it touches.

I replaced all the windows in my 100 year old home with Pella Windows and could not be happier with the results. The Rapid City team has been great to work with from the sale to the installation.

PLANNING YOUR FINANCIAL FUTURE: INSIGHTS FROM A NEW YORK LIFE AGENT

Financial planning transcends mere wealth accumulation; it's about safeguarding one's family and future.

In the ever-evolving landscape of financial services, Noel Vohlken, an agent with New York Life Insurance Company, offers valuable insights into the importance of securing one's financial future. With nearly eight years of experience as a New York Life agent, Vohlken brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the table.

Noel Vohlken's journey into financial services was anything but conventional. Prior to joining New York Life, Vohlken served as an executive assistant to two other New York Life agents, leveraging her organizational skills and customer service expertise. Before that, she held diverse roles, including regional manager, examiner, and medical lab tech. These experiences have shaped Vohlken's approach, emphasizing compassion, attention to detail, and client-centricity.

BHHBA 2024 Home Show 19

On a personal note, Vohlken shares a fulfilling 22-year marriage with her husband Devlon, along with their two daughters, Annabella and Calla. Their family is completed by Lunati, a beloved 130-pound Neapolitan Mastiff. Residing in Rapid City, South Dakota.

Many wonder about the transition from the medical field to financial planning for Vohlken. Surprisingly, her background in healthcare provided a solid foundation, instilling qualities such as compassion, meticulousness, and exceptional customer service—all of which are integral to her role as a financial professional.

Vohlken's path to becoming a New York Life agent was serendipitous. Initially pursuing a different career path, she found herself assisting a New York Life agent with their clientele. Despite initial apprehension, Vohlken embraced the challenge, passing required tests with flying colors and embarking on her journey as an agent.

For Vohlken, financial services transcends mere wealth accumulation; it's about safeguarding one's family and future. Just as a sturdy house requires a solid foundation, a comprehensive financial strategy is essential for peace of mind. Whether it's life insurance, disability coverage, or retirement planning, proactive steps today can yield significant benefits tomorrow.

DYNAMIC ROOFING

A Journey of Commitment, Growth, and Putting People First

Choosing a company to enhance your home's exterior is more than a transaction; it's about finding a reliable companion for your living space.

Dynamic Roofing, founded by Riley Burke and Jon Castaneda, transcends the typical contractor-client relationship. It's a community-focused venture dedicated to providing topnotch roofing and exterior services while putting people first.

Origins and Vision

Dynamic Roofing's story began in 2019 when Riley Burke and Jon Castaneda observed a gap in how clients,

subcontractors, suppliers, and employees were being treated in the industry. Fueled by a commitment to address this issue, they established Dynamic Roofing —a company that not only excelled in exterior services but prioritized a positive customer experience.

Comprehensive Services

From its inception, Dynamic Roofing concentrated on roofing, siding, gutters, windows, and doors—avoiding ventures outside their expertise to ensure they never want to overpromise and underdeliver. The commitment to quality and precision is also evident in their dedication to having specialized crews for the different services they offer.

Evolution and Growth

Dynamic Roofing's journey involved, evolving from a focus on roofs and gutters to offering a comprehensive range of services, including siding, windows, doors, garage doors, and even commercial work. Despite the challenges brought by COVID-19,

the company not only survived but thrived. By 2021, with the addition of partners Ryan Diehl and Cody Welch, as well as sales reps and office staff, Dynamic Roofing expanded exponentially, demonstrating resilience and adaptability.

Community Engagement and Support

Beyond exterior services, Dynamic Roofing actively contributes to the local community. Their involvement extended to projects benefiting veterans, such as a nonprofit initiative that transformed a

shop into a gym. The company's support also reached the Douglas School District, Love Inc., Sacred Mountain Retreat Center, Dart Leagues, and various school initiatives— demonstrating a commitment to giving back.

Cultural Events and Development:

Ryan Diehl's involvement in selfdevelopment influenced the company's approach to team development. Their monthly team meetings focus on breathing exercises and meditation, fostering a unique culture within the team. The company also organizes a yearly camping trip, providing an opportunity for the team and their families to unwind and develop deeper relationships.

Technology and Innovation:

Dynamic Roofing actively embraces technology, attending trade shows and events to stay updated on the latest

“We came from seeing clients and all people involved not really being taken care of. So with that in the back of our minds we decided to start Dynamic and begin a process that puts people first.”
- Riley Burke- Owner

industry technologies. They continually explore new programs and applications to streamline processes and enhance the customer experience. With a team of eight employees, the company remains open to recruiting individuals interested in trying something new and being part of a different approach to exterior services.

Conclusion:

Owners Riley Burke (CEO), Jon Castaneda (COO), Cody Welch (CSO), and Ryan Diehl (CGO) have lead Dynamic Roofing with a dedication to providing not just a service but an experience. Their commitment to professionalism, active community involvement, and a fun yet focused internal culture contribute to the company's success. Choose Dynamic Roofing to transform the pain point of uncertainty into a journey of community-focused care and precision.

“Jon was great. He was really knowledgeable, followed through on his commitments, and they did a great job on my roof. I will be referring all friends and family to Dynamic. Thank you again!”

This need to adapt each space to a specific need creates the opportunity for personality to shine through. Neighbors and family may have suggestions, and between Pinterest, magazines and TV shows...it can easily become overwhelming to create a plan for updating your home.

Don’t let it get to you! Your creativity doesn’t need to be put in a box for what is on trend for the time

COSMETIC KITCHEN UPGRADES

Kitchens are commonly a hub of social activity. So, when it comes to making your space both useful and beautiful, implementing these simple kitchen cosmetic upgrades can make a world of difference

COUNTERTOPS & BACKSPLASH

Replacing the countertops and backsplash will make a big impact in the space, and At Home Design can help. There are a variety of countertop options, styles and colors to select from in our showroom. Where quartz and granite are the choice of many homeowners, solid surface and laminate countertops are good products that offer value and style when needing to keep your investment costs low.

Likewise, a tile backsplash can add a feeling of “wow”. And when it’s paired with the right color of grout, it can really be a standout addition to your kitchen.

SINKS & FIXTURES

Depending on your countertop selection, the next thing to consider is the kitchen sink. Sinks get a lot of use and a quality one will hold up well over time. Sinks and fixtures come in a variety of materials and finishes. Working with our team to select your new products will ensure you’re making the best choice for your kitchen upgrade.

FLOORING

Upgrading the flooring completes the space. A multitude of options are available for the kitchen including luxury vinyl (easier to maintain), tile, and wood. Some things to consider when replacing the flooring include coordination of the updated kitchen along with the rest of the home style. The kitchen floor might flow into the dining room space and beyond. Working with the interior design team at At Home Design, we will talk through the best options for you and your family’s needs.

CABINETRY UPDATES

Replacing your cabinets can be expensive. If your cabinets are in good shape, you might consider painting them. Proper color selection will give the space an updated feel and can add style and interest. Be sure to hire a professional painter for this project. It’s more expensive than doing it yourself, but cabinetry is the workhorse of the kitchen and, if not done properly, the paint can crack, peel and chip away.

Likewise, updating the storage capabilities of your cabinets is a great way to upgrade your space. Whether it’s a way to utilize your blind corner or hang pots and pans, we have a solution to help.

KNOBS & PULLS

One of the smallest, most impactful cosmetic upgrades to your kitchen is replacing the hardware on your cabinetry. Changing the material, color and finish is a simple project to do. If you have existing knobs and pulls on your current kitchen cabinets, you will need to measure the center hole to hole dimension to determine the size of the pull required. Also, be aware of any color change where the existing hardware was covering up the finish on the cabinet. This could impact the style of hardware you purchase.

If you have questions about cosmetic remodeling, we’d love to help. Give us a call at 605.388.8322 to schedule an in-home consultation.

THE PAP MADISON CABIN: THE OLDEST BUILDING IN RAPID CITY

When contemplating the oldest structure in Rapid City, one might naturally assume that it would be associated with the rich and diverse Native American history that predates the Gold Rush era. The Native American villages that once thrived along the banks of Rapid Creek would seem like a plausible location. However, it is intriguing to discover that the oldest structure in Rapid City actually does not originate from these Native American villages. Instead, it is a log cabin constructed by Pap Madison, a white settler, in 1876.

Pap Madison was one of the pioneering individuals who ventured into the Black Hills region following the gold discovery in 1874. Not only was he a prospector, hunter, and trader, but he also developed close friendships with the Lakota people, highlighting the diverse interactions that played a significant role in shaping the early history of the city. He constructed the cabin near the mouth of Spring Creek, about 12 miles south of Rapid City. Made from local pine logs and mud, the cabin provided Pap Madison with 225 square feet of living space. Initially, it had a dirt floor and was heated with a woodburning cook stove.

Beyond being a humble abode, the cabin served as a trading post and meeting place for miners, Native Americans, and travelers. Pap Madison's hospitality and generosity were renowned as he hosted parties and dances, fostering peace and friendship between the white settlers and the Lakota people. This bridge-building effort earned him respect from both sides and contributed to the harmonious coexistence of different communities.

In 1892, Pap sold the cabin to John Brennan, who later used it as a barn. However, in 1926, the Fortnightly Club, a group of prominent women in Rapid City, spearheaded its relocation to Halley Park. The cabin stood inconspicuously near the intersection of Omaha and Fifth streets until 2012 when it found a new home at the Journey Museum.

The relocation to the Journey Museum ensured the preservation and accessibility of the cabin for future generations. Now housed in the museum, the Pap Madison Cabin stands as a testament to the early days of settlement, the interactions between different communities, and the importance of building relationships and understanding. Visitors can explore the cabin's history and significance, immersing themselves in the pioneering spirit that shaped Rapid City's development.

Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2008, the Pap Madison Cabin holds immense historical value. It symbolizes the resilience and spirit of adventure that characterized the pioneers of Rapid City. As the oldest surviving building in the city, the cabin preserves the legacy of Pap Madison and serves as a reminder of the early days of settlement, the cultural exchanges between communities, and the importance of fostering peace and friendship.

Hays Contracting: Building Dreams, Building Community

Established in the Black Hills since 2010, Hays Contracting embodies a commitment to excellence, integrity, and service that sets it apart in the construction industry. Founded by Ezra Hays with a vision to be the best by continually striving for improvement, the company's mission is simple yet profound: to leave every customer so satisfied with the quality, integrity, and service provided that they become enthusiastic advocates, recommending Hays Contracting to others.

Specializing in pole barns, postframe buildings, and the increasingly popular barndominiums, Hays Contracting offers more than just structures; they offer homes and spaces where memories are made and dreams are realized. Their dedication to delivering top-notch craftsmanship and personalized service benefits not only individual homeowners but also the broader community.

"We try to leave every customer so satisfied with the quality, integrity, and service provided that they become enthusiastic advocates of Hays Contracting.”

Beyond their commitment to quality construction, Hays Contracting actively contributes to the local community through philanthropic endeavors. One notable project involves rebuilding a billboard on Highway 16, which will feature a message from South Dakota Right to Life. Hays Contracting is donating all labor for this project, exemplifying their dedication to supporting causes that matter to the community.

Inspired by the opportunity to fill a niche in the construction market,

Ezra Hays founded the business with a focus on post-frame construction. Today, the company is thriving, with a specialization in post-frame buildings and a spec barndominium currently under construction and listed for sale.

Key accomplishments and milestones include assembling a stellar crew of skilled professionals who form the backbone of the company. Hays Contracting recognizes that the quality of its team directly impacts its success, and they are actively seeking new members to join its ranks.

“ Great company, amazing people! Down to earth and honest with their work, not too bad on the pricing also!! I would definitely recommend them for any contracting work you might have, I'll use them for my projects in the future for sure. I got a new roof on my pole barn, it was a while for the materials to be delivered but when they did show up there was a Hays rep there to help offload everything in the right spot. Once the material was there it was off and on with the roofing in one weekend.”

Looking to the future, Hays Contracting aims to build two more barndominium homes by the end of the year while maintaining a busy schedule of post-frame building projects. Despite facing challenges in recent years, the company has adapted and found success by specializing in their preferred types of projects.

While community involvement initiatives are currently limited, Hays Contracting prioritizes sustainability and energy efficiency in its operations. Offering spray foam as an add-on service for increased energy efficiency demonstrates their commitment to environmentally responsible building practices.

What truly sets Hays Contracting apart is their tagline, "Your Post Frame Experts," which reflects their deep knowledge and experience in the industry. This expertise, combined with a positive work environment and incentive-based bonuses for employees, contributes to the company's ongoing success.

"Your Post Frame Experts," which reflects their deep knowledge and experience in the industry.”
- Ezra Hays Owner

Located in the scenic Black Hills, Hays Contracting draws inspiration from the natural beauty and vibrant culture of Western South Dakota. The local community, in turn, plays a crucial role in supporting the business, with Hays Contracting enjoying strong relationships with its customers.

Spring Forward with Energy Conservation Tips from

BLACK HILLS ENERGY

We work hard year-round to bring you resources for understanding your bill and ways you can take action to manage energy use at home. Using energy more wisely is something everyone can feel good about. As the weather warms, we’re sharing energy conservation tips customers can add to their Spring-Cleaning checklist – all of which can help them better manage energy use and lower energy bills.

Here are five ideas to tackle before Summer:

Replace filters for your HVAC system. Check and replace your filters every three months. Dirty filters make your furnace work extra hard to push the air through, using more energy and increasing the wear and tear on your system.

Seal any air leaks. Use weather-stripping on cracks and window openings to help air from escaping in or out of your home. This will help keep your home cool as the warmer weather rolls in. Don’t forget the garage! Flush your hot water heater. Doing this annually helps to get rid of sediment build up, which is not only good for your water heater. Plus, if your unit is in a spot that’s exposed to cold temperatures, consider insulating the unit to help reduce how much energy it’s using to heat water.

Clean sliding door tracks Remove dirt and debris from your sliding door tracks to ensure the seal has no gaps for air to enter. Leaking air makes your furnace or air conditioner work harder to keep your home comfortable.

Change your fan. Change the direction of your ceiling fans to rotate counterclockwise in warmer months, so they’re circulating cool air and helping your air conditioner keep your house comfortable.

We’re also reminding customers of options available to make it easier to pay your energy bill, such as budget billing, a free option for all customers that adds more predictability to customer bills by averaging out the amount you pay each month.

We also can connect customers who need assistance with support from resources like BHEAP, which provides bill-payment assistance for income-qualified customers; and Black Hills Cares, which combines voluntary customer and employee donations with matching company contributions to help eligible customers pay their bills or emergency energy-related expenses. We hope you’ll continue to take steps to conserve energy or take on energy efficiency projects, like switching to LED light bulbs. Plus, check out our available rebates for smart thermostats and appliances that are more energy efficient. For more ideas energy conservation tips and energy efficiency ideas, visit blackhillsenergy.com/teamready.

We’re here to deliver the safe, reliable energy you rely on, at home and at work – and to offer strategies for using energy wisely, options for paying your bill and assistance for those who need it.

Breaking News: Top 4 Builders in Rapid City

BUILDING GROWTH ON A SOLID FOUNDATION

Recently, I embarked on a project that I anticipated would be a straightforward task of tallying numbers. My goal was to find out the top four builders of single-family homes and duplexes within the city limits of Rapid City. Who were they? Before we dive into that, let ’ s take a moment to reflect on the changing landscape and population of Rapid City.

Some Rapid Citians have called this area “home” for only a few years, while others measure that time in multiple generations of family. Those of us who have lived here for 30, 20, or even just 10 years, can attest to the fact that the area is changing - rapidly! Are you aware that an estimated 3,000 people move to Rapid City annually? With this staggering statistic, Rapid City ranks as the number one city for population growth in the Midwest for the past two consecutive years and we are ranked 54th nationwide. What factors are fueling this remarkable growth?

First, some context. Rapid City’ s trade area draws consumers from a five-state region encompassing around 400,000 people who reside within a two-hour drive of the city. As a result, there is a great demand for a wide range of products and services. To meet this demand, many existing companies are investing in and expanding their organizations.

Local news has been covering this explosive growth for the past few years, but I feel it bears repeating that a staggering 2,654 building permits were issued in 2023, amounting to nearly $450 million. These figures are unprecedented for our area and signify the rapid development and growth taking place in our region.

Monument Health is the largest employer in our area with over 5,000 employees and they have undertaken numerous large-scale addition and remodeling projects in recent years. Additionally, Ellsworth Air Force Base employs over 4,200 people and is expected to bring in an additional 5,000 personnel with the B21 Bomber project. Furthermore, various individuals and companies are relocating their businesses, starting new ventures, and ding existing small businesses in our area. Aesir Technologies, for example, has chosen Rapid City as the location for its new battery facility and is estimated to create approximately 1,500 local jobs. All of this begs the question of where to house these folks and brings us once again to the purpose of my original project. Who are the top 4 builders

In 2023, Hills View Homes, Paradigm Construction, Zeisler Construction, and Hunter Homes emerged as the top four builders of single-family homes and duplexes within the city limits. A huge shout-out to these four companies. Your hard work and dedication have created a significant impact towards ensuring that quality, affordable housing options remain available to those who already call Rapid City home and to those moving into our area.

No discussion about housing in the Rapid City area would be complete without mentioning Dream Design International. The team at Dream Design has been instrumental in the development of various projects, from land planning, real estate development, engineering and surveying, construction, and business complexes, to affordable housing and property management services.

Every contractor, tradesperson, and vendor with a connection to the building industry in our area deserves kudos for their diligence and contributions. Rapid City and the surrounding areas are great places to call home, and you all play a considerable role in fulfilling that objective.
