hilst the UK voted in the June Referendum to leave the European Union, it is still not yet clear what leaving the EU will actually mean for business. There is much to debate about what Brexit will mean in practice, especially on two major issues - the precise arrangements being proposed for British firms to do business in the EU, and for full clarification of the rights ofEU workers to live and work in the UK.

Theresa May has indicated that the Government will invoke Article 50 before March 2017. This means that early next year there ought to be greater clarity regarding the conditions of any deal being sought by the UK on trade and immigration.

In the meantime, as a fully-accredited member of the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), we are lobbying the Government as it approaches the negotiations on the UK's exit from the European Union to ensure

the best possible outcome for the UK and the business communities we represent. The areas which we are focusing on are; Trade, the Labour Market, EU Funding, Regulation, Taxation and Customs, and specific arrangements regarding Northern Ireland and Ireland.

As we reported in the last edition of Close Up, there remains much to be done regarding the routine work of Government. These include important strategic decisions on Infrastructure Projects encompassing road, rail, energy, and Broadband. All these issues need to be progressed as a matter of urgency in order to ensure the UK's future competitiveness in Global Markets. You may be assured that we will keep doing all that we can to promote and ensure a business-friendly Government agenda which will assist our Member companies, as well as the wider business community in our area, to invest and create wealth and employment for the benefit and

wellbeing of our regional economy. In other news, we are delighted that one of our members, Lattitude7, has been announced as the Excellence in Customer Services winner in the regional heats for Yorkshire and Humber in the Chamber Business Awards 2016. I would like to take this opportunity to wish Martin Haigh at Lattitude7 all the best for the national finals which take place in London this month.

Finally, we have introduced a new feature within the Chamber section of the magazine called 'Catch up with .. .' where we will introduce a different member of the Chamber team. This edition we find out more about Jan Jevons, Chamber Childcare Co-ordinator. We hope you enjoy reading this latest edition of Close Up.
