Emotional salute to a gay hero GUS Van Sant’s stylish and haunting biopic celebrates the power of one man to take on the political establishment and to affect lasting change through a selfless, unwavering pursuit of equality for all. On November 27, 1978, Harvey Milk, the first openly gay man elected to public office in California, was gunned down with Mayor George Moscone by city supervisor Dan White. The gunman had learned that he would lose his job after publicly supporting Proposition 6, which advocated the removal of gay and lesbian schoolteachers from the state’s schools. Milk pays tribute to this crusading politico with effortless style and jawdropping emotional power, rendering

week is a very long time in politics. A few days after Barack Obama’s momentous inauguration, director Ron Howard looks back to the exploits of one of Obama’s predecessors, who brought shame on his country. On August 8, 1974, in the wake of the Watergate scandal, Richard Nixon became the first President to resign. Rather than answer tough questions about his so-called crimes, Nixon was sensationally pardoned by his successor Gerald Ford, effectively robbing the US public of the trial of this humiliated statesman. Frost/Nixon sensationally documents the efforts of an unlikely champion – British talk show host David Frost – to interview Nixon on camera and to effectively tease a confession from the wily orator. Based on the award-winning stage play by Peter Morgan, who pens the screenplay, Howard’s film is a classic tale of David and Goliath, political might versus televisual fluff, with tour de force performances. Frank Langella reprises his role as the fallen President, whose sense of right and wrong has become horribly confused. He clings onto the notion that his memoirs will restore his tarnished reputation. “It’s probably the only chance I’m going to get to put the record straight and remind people the Nixon years weren’t ALL bad,’’ growls Langella.

us speechless and tear-sodden as the film recreates the torchlight procession of tens of thousands of local people to honour the activist’s murder. Milk opens with Harvey (Sean Penn) sitting at his kitchen table, speaking into a cassette recorder. “This is Harvey Milk speaking on Friday November 18th. This is to be played in the event of my death by assassination...’’ With the sombre confession as a framework, Dustin Lance Black’s delicate screenplay rewinds to 1970 New York City, where 40-something Harvey meets the love of his life, 22-

year-old Scott Smith (James Franco), on the subway. The couple move to San Francisco and attempt to set up a camera shop, only to meet fierce resistance and prejudice from other shopkeepers. So Harvey mobilises the local gay community and boycotts businesses which dare to discriminate against people because of their sexuality, fostering a new air of togetherness. Weathering the inflammatory remarks of Anita Bryant and Senator John Briggs (Denis O’Hare), Harvey reminds his campaign team, led by ballsy manager Anne Kronenberg (Alison Pill), to never give up. Drifter Cleve Jones (Emile Hirsch) takes Harvey at his word and

lends his voice to the cause. Meanwhile Harvey and Scott’s relationship founders and eventually selfdestructs, propelling the statesman into the path of emotionally unstable Latino hanger-on Jack (Diego Luna). Milk is another beautifully crafted picture from Van Sant, delivering the unmessages with a solemnity when other directors might have been tempted to bang an ideological drum. Penn delivers possibly the performance of his career, affecting Harvey’s speech patterns and mannerisms to capture the capriciousness and determination of this man of the people. We mourn, remember and celebrate his legacy through Van Sant’s lens.

Epic war of words TOP FILMS

BATTLE OF WITS: Michael Sheen as David Frost and Frank Langella as Richard Nixon Equally compelling is Michael Sheen as Frost, the charmer and bon viveur, who is completely out of his depth against such a well-drilled opponent. Howard’s masterful picture recreates the build-up to the four interviews as Nixon and his advisors, led by Jack Brennan (Kevin Bacon), look forward to running rings around Frost and team: John Birt (Matthew Macfadyen), Bob Zelnick (Oliver Platt) and James Reston (Sam Rockwell). The first couple of tapings are a disaster and Frost looks like a buffoon.

However, as the interview time nears an end, the British interrogator gets under the skin of Nixon and incites him to lay himself bare before an audience of millions. Although it may lack the hold-your-breath tension of the award-winning stage production, Frost/Nixon is a terrific distillation of a time that America would rather forget. Morgan’s script hinges on the verbal sparring between the two men, the balance of power subtly shifting until the President capitulates. ● Michael Sheen interview: Don’t miss Life! magazine free with The Gazette on Saturday

Hitler death plot lacks drama DURING the Second World War, another battle was raging within the Fuhrer’s officer corps; an uprising of men and women, loyal to their country, determined to assassinate Hitler and overthrow the Nazis. Bryan Singer’s controversial war opus, scripted by Christopher McQuarrie and Nathan Alexander, relates the final attempt on the German leader’s life before his suicide in April 1945 in the Fuhrerbunker. Valkyrie is a remarkable, true-life tale of heroism. Sadly, Singer’s film doesn’t do justice to the remarkable efforts of the German Resistance, lacking dramatic momentum and strong performances.

VALKYRIE (12A) Rating: 5/10

Crucially, we know Hitler survives this attempt on his life so there is an absence of tension from the opening frame. Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg (Tom Cruise, above, right) is recruited by the Resistance to spearhead the assassination. The dissenters plot to seize control of the government using Operation Valkyrie, Hitler’s plan to protect ministers in case of an uprising using the reserve army. With loyal adjutant Lieutenant Werner von Haeften (Jamie Parker), Claus works with

high-ranking co-conspirators Major-General Henning von Tresckow (Kenneth Branagh), General Erich Fellgiebel (Eddie Izzard), General Friedrich Olbricht (Bill Nighy) and Colonel Mertz von Quirnheim (Christian Berkel) to install General Ludwig Beck (Terence Stamp) as head of state. However, there are many officers loyal to Hitler, including General Friedrich Fromm (Tom Wilkinson) and Major Otto Ernst Remeer (Thomas Kretschmann). Valkyrie is a plodding history lesson. A couple of well-executed action sequences quicken the pulse but Singer’s film ambles along without urgency.
