Wake-up Workout Community Center to offer more workout options for early birds
F
inding the time to exercise can be challenging. A few stolen minutes during a lunch break or stealing time in the evening between meals and family obligations is not always possible. The Blacksburg Community Center is offering new early-morning group classes to provide residents with new, affordable, and convenient options to get fit. High intensity interval training (HIIT) will be offered at 6:15 a.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays. This 30-minute class combines quick, intense bursts of activity with short, active recovery periods which burns calories and gets your heart pumping. Kettlebell classes will be offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:15 a.m. This challenging workout involves doing lots of repetitions with heavy weights to work up a sweat. A key to this class is the right technique, so guidance from a trained instructor is critical. Group circuit training and yoga classes will be offered at 7 a.m., so you can add an extra stretch or cycle through machines and still have time to get ready for work or school. “Community members have been requesting earlier classes and this is a way to expand programming without sacrificing other classes,” Josh Sharitz, Blacksburg parks and recreation assistant director, said. Similar evening classes are extremely popular, and early morning offerings provide residents with more options. “We’re excited about adding more highquality programs and top-notch services through the Rec Center,” Sharitz said. Register for HIIT, kettlebell, yoga, or group circuit training at https://recreation.blacksburg.gov/ or call 540-443-1100. About Town Town || www.blacksburg.gov www.blacksburg.gov 3 || About
Roam If You Want To hen was the last time you rode a bike? With the Roam New River WValley Bike Share, more people can explore the region on two wheels.
There are 75 bright orange bikes available in total, and 12 bike rack hubs located across the area, in Blacksburg, Christiansburg, and on the Virginia Tech campus. “We wanted to put hubs where there is a lot of activity,” Tom Fox, director of Blacksburg Transit, said. More bikes and racks will be added as demand increases. Roam bikes are perfect for short rides around town and along the Huckleberry Trail. Bikes have a single grip shift with seven speeds, as well as a hand brake and foot brake to help riders navigate the area’s hilly terrain. Seats can be adjusted to suit riders from 5’0 to 6’4. Designed for durability, the tires are puncture resistant, and instead of a chain, the bikes have rubber drive belts. Bike Barn, a local business, will take care of any bike maintenance issues. The bike share is contracted to Gotcha, a company that runs bike share programs across the country, such as Chapel Hill, NC, Norman, OK, and Charleston, SC. Getting access to a bike is simple. Riders create a Roam account and pay for a membership plan, which includes daily, monthly, and annual options. To access a bike, riders enter their Roam account and PIN numbers into a solar-powered panel above the bike’s rear tire. Each bike is tracked by GPS, and riders can use the Roam website or Sobi app to determine how many bikes are available at each station. Roam New River Valley is a partnership between the Blacksburg, Christiansburg, Montgomery County, and Virginia Tech, with start-up funding provided by the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation. The program is managed by Blacksburg Transit. To learn about pricing, locations, and other information, visit http://gotchabike.com/roamnrv/, download the Social Bicycles app, Sobi, or call (843) 212-2190.

When Town Meets Gown Engaging Blacksburg residents and Virginia Tech
S
ometimes it may seem like Virginia Tech students and Blacksburg residents live in two different worlds. But the ties between college and community are strong, and this comes from the intentional work of both groups. “Our town’s relationships have improved dramatically because of good communication,” Steve Ross, deputy town manager, said. One effort, the town-gown program, brings both students and community members together to learn and discuss topics of local interest. People who attend these 90-minute meetings discover they share interests, passions and values. All agree that Blacksburg is a wonderful place to live—be it for four years or a lifetime. The conversations between students and residents ultimately informs Blacksburg’s growth. “Our collective future depends on our goodwill, collaboration, and commitment to working together,” Frank Shushok, senior associate vice president for student affairs at Virginia Tech, said. Community programs that support town-gown relations include Blacksburg Police Department’s No Hokie Left Behind, Adopt-a-Cop, Greeks Give Back, and the Big Event. The motto, “Love where you live,” emerged from a town-gown collaboration. There are six town-gown meetings each year. Meetings are open to anyone, and topics cover community history, the environment, public safety, diversity, transit, and planning. Meetings are free and open to the public. “We always want more voices, more ideas, more possibilities to come forward,” Shushok said. “We really are better together.” For updates about the town-gown meeting dates and topics, and other Blacksburg news, register for Citizens Alert at www.blacksburg.gov/citizensalert

About Town | www.blacksburg.gov
Let’s Go Downtown
Keeping Blacksburg’s downtown a popular destination involves planning, cooperation, and lots of listening
A
vibrant, busy, bustling downtown is good for everyone. From concerts on Henderson Lawn, shopping at the farmer’s market or on Main Street, people-watching, or dining at favorite restaurants, Blacksburg’s downtown is as popular as ever. “The health of a community really can be gauged by the health of its marketplace,” said Mayor Leslie Hager-Smith. As downtown grows, it needs to adapt and preserve the things that make Blacksburg special. “We want to keep the energy we have going on now, and build on it,” Matt Hanratty, assistant to the town manager, said. “At the same time, we want to retain Blacksburg’s small-town character that people love.” After holding four public meetings and surveying town residents, the town identified seven interconnected strategies it will use to direct its vision for growing downtown: Establish Development Opportunities by using guidelines to identify appropriate sites that align with architectural quality and community character. Address Housing Affordability, especially for middle income earners and non-student housing. Move People, Not Cars with more bike and pedestrian thoroughfares and building a central parking structure. Enhance the Public Realm with public programs, streetscaping, and other beautification plans. Foster Innovation and Economic Growth by adding office and mixed-use spaces to attract diverse talent. Celebrate Town Distinctiveness with historic preservation, supporting small businesses and fostering the creative community. Develop Six Districts, One Downtown so that Blacksburg can balance housing, retail, transportation, public art, commercial space, and historic preservation as it grows.
“This has been such a valuable process,” said the mayor. “Working in concert with the citizens of our community, we now have a solid, adaptable, well thought out plan that is right for Blacksburg.” For more information, illustrations, and updates, visit http://www. blacksburg.gov/downtownstrategy.
