Wheelie Fun for the Whole Family Explore Your Favorite Vehicles at Wheels and Wagons, June 1

O

ne of Blacksburg’s most popular events celebrates its tenth year this summer. For everyone who loves tires, horns, and chrome, Wheels and Wagons appeals to the kid in all of us.

This free event features vehicles of all shapes and sizes: police cars, ambulances, fire trucks, tow trucks, motorcycles, and even a helicopter. Blacksburg Transit hosts a drawing contest, and images are used to decorate the buses all year long. Children can paint snow plow blades, and volunteers from the Virginia College of Medicine offer face painting and general wellness information. “We’ll do anything to put a smile on a kid’s face,” Steve Ross, deputy town manager, said. At Wheels and Wagons, kids can touch and interact with their favorite cars and trucks, and meet the people who work with them. “The town provides so many services, like emergency services, transit, and public works like fixing, paving, mowing, snow removal, all which require unique and special vehicles. Bringing the community out helps build a greater connection and is very much a team effort.” The effort, however, is more than worth it. “If you see happy kids, we’ve done what we hoped to do,” Ross said. Join the fun at Wheels and Wagons, June 1, 9 a.m. – Noon Frank Theatres’ parking lot | First and Main Shopping Center

Golf is for Everyone Blacksburg’s Municipal Golf Course Reopens for Play

T

hings are starting to green up in Blacksburg. After more than a year of

construction, the Blacksburg Municipal Golf Course will reopen for the Summer 2019 season on May 1. The course has been re-grassed and sodded, which adds new teeing ground and more space for good golf instruction. For golfers seeking golf experience to challenge their skills, The Hill offers a unique experience in one of Blacksburg’s most beautiful spots. “Everyone can play golf, and that’s one of the great joys of the game,” Jeff Kleppin, golf course supervisor, said. With the extra instruction space, there are more opportunities for new golfers to learn the game and for experienced golfers to perfect their skills. Several clinics will be offered throughout the week. “Golf is more than just holding a club and swinging it,” Kleppin said. “Etiquette is important, and we’re here for all levels of golfers and want to make everyone comfortable.” Other classes will provide lessons on intermediate and advanced topics. Players can walk the course or rent a cart, reserve a tee time or walk-in. There are also annual pass rates for individuals, families, seniors, and college students. A special pass for junior players includes access to all instruction sessions. Fees are lower Monday through Thursday and golfers will always get the lowest rate if they make a tee time in advance. “You can play golf forever. It promotes accountability and self-discipline. You need to respect the course and other players. You can develop social relationships and do business networking. It reinforces so many important life skills,” Kleppin said. • Get out on the green • Reserve your tee time • Online www.golfthehill.com • Phone 540-961-1137

The Huckleberry Trail’s Last Link Connects Towns to Mountains Walk, hike, and bike your heart out

T

he final piece of the Huckleberry Trail will open this summer. This section of

the area’s most popular walking trail will connect Price’s Fork Road to Glade Road near Heritage Park, the last piece of ten miles of trails that link Christiansburg to the Jefferson National Forest. This portion of the Huckleberry Trail features a 500-foot boardwalk that winds through a wooded wetland near the Linwood Lane access point and passes through Virginia Tech’s Moore Farm. The trail has many special features—bridges, tunnels, and historical markers. Some sections offer special loop trails, and depending where you jump on, you may be in town, crossing through farmland, or passing through a shady woodland. The trail’s completion marks decades of fundraising and advocacy. “Partnerships and collaboration have been key to building this amazing public space,” Dean Crane, director of Blacksburg Parks and Recreation said. “Bill Ellenbogen’s leadership and advocacy with the Friends of the Huckleberry has been a constant driving force for the positive. And the positive working relationships between Blacksburg’s Parks and Rec, Public Works, and Engineering departments have also played an integral role.” No further trail sections are planned for the Huckleberry once this final portion is completed, but other improvement projects are ongoing. In January 2019, the Blacksburg Town Council added a proposal for a pedestrian bridge across Price’s Fork Road to the capital improvement plan. In December 2018, the New River Land Trust, acquired 553 acres of land on Brush Mountain. The trust will deed this land to Town of Blacksburg to develop additional trails for biking, hiking, and riding. With the Huckleberry as a link, hikers, bikers, and walkers can go from town to the mountains without getting in their cars. Join us for a ribbon cutting June 20, 3:30 p.m. Meet at the Heritage Park parking lot on Glade Road and we will walk over to the new boardwalk!
