No Bags in the Bin! Single stream makes recycling easy, but don’t use plastic bags
I
t feels good to know your trash can be reused. But just because you sort
something into your recycling bin doesn’t mean it can be recycled.
“We have a lot of wishful recyclers,” Teresa Sweeney, education and training coordinator at the Montgomery Regional Solid Waste Authority, said. “We can’t always find a home for everything that is placed in the recycling bin.” One of the biggest recycling problems is plastic bags. “Just leave your recycling loose in the bin,” Karen Day, solid waste specialist with the Town of Blacksburg, said. “People often collect recycling in their home the same way they collect trash, in thin plastic bags,” Sweeney added. Recyclables cannot be sorted if they are bagged. When the thin plastic bags rip and tear, the loose plastic clogs the screens and jams the sorting machine. Plastic bags can be recycled at retailers like Food Lion, Kroger, Target, and Walmart. Recycled dry cleaner, produce, bread and retail bags, plastic wrappers, and cereal box liners can be reused in products like composite lumber. For recycling help on the go, Blacksburg residents can use the Recycle Coach app. The customizable app gives information about what can be recycled and when, as well as updates about leaf collection and fall and spring cleanup. Visit www.blacksburg.gov/recycleapp for more information. Many items can be recycled even if they can’t be dropped off at the curb. Visit www.mrswa.com and click the link for “Ask Mrs. Wa” to see what items can be brought to the Montgomery Regional Solid Waste Authority.

Park Progress Part of the Huckleberry Trail nears completion as the Mountain Biking Skills Park begins construction and future outdoor spaces are planned
P
arks and public spaces are the heart of Blacksburg, where people can meet,
play, and enjoy the great outdoors. Preserving land for public use takes time and careful planning. This patience pays off, however, as exemplified by one of Blacksburg’s oldest parks—the Huckleberry Trail, and one of its newest—the Mountain Biking Skills Park.
Final section of Huckleberry Trail to be completed this spring
The last section of the Huckleberry Trail, which will stretch from Price’s Fork Road to Linwood Lane, will be completed in late spring. Once open, walkers, runners, and cyclists can travel from Christiansburg to the Jefferson National Forest and Pandapas Pond. This part of the Huckleberry will include a 500-foot boardwalk, a unique feature for the trail. Mountain Biking Skills Park to break ground
After several years of fundraising, the Blacksburg Parks and Recreation Department has submitted a request for proposals to find a contractor that can begin construction on the Mountain Biking Skills Park. The town will evaluate the bids, interview builders, and move forward with scheduling construction. Once plans are in place, there will be opportunities for volunteers to help with park construction and a potential opening date will be announced. Land Trust Receives Grant
The New River Land Trust and Poverty Creek Trails Coalition have received a $1.2 million grant from the Virginia Outdoors Foundation and plan to purchase 553 acres along the Brush Mountain ridgeline. Following the purchase, approximately 218 acres will be transferred to the Town of Blacksburg and 335 acres to Montgomery County to be preserved for outdoor recreation and multi-use trails. “We’re incredibly excited about this opportunity,” said Blacksburg Town Manager Marc Verniel. “Together with the New River Land Trust and Poverty Creek Trails Coalition we will preserve these forested parcels on the eastern face of Brush Mountain. In addition to ecological benefits and viewshed protection, these tracts of land will provide recreational opportunities for our region through the development of new multi-use trails. The town is exploring opportunities to connect the Huckleberry Trail system to these properties, allowing anyone to access the Jefferson National Forest and the Poverty Creek Trail System, directly from any location in town.”

Greener treatment process for Blacksburg wastewater
Wrinse the dishes, or flush the hen you wash your hands,
toilet, you may not think much about the water that goes down the drain. But the Blacksburg-VPI Sanitation Authority is focused on keeping our wastewater treatment process safe and efficient 365 days a year. The authority treats approximately 6 million gallons of wastewater every day, and recently installed a new, more efficient and environmentally-friendly treatment process for solid waste. For almost forty years, the solids generated during the wastewater treatment process were incinerated and the ash was transported to a landfill. Now, these solids are treated by a process called autothermal thermophilic aerobic digestion (ATAD). The resulting product is an Exceptional Quality Class A biosolid that can potentially be used in landscaping and agriculture. “The decision to invest in the ATAD system reinforces the town and Virginia Tech’s commitment to sustainability through implementing state of the art processes which add value both fiscally and environmentally to our community,” said Blacksburg Deputy Town Manager and authority board member Chris Lawrence. Wastewater sent to the treatment plant goes through a process where the water and solids are separated. Once that process is complete, the solid material is fed into ATAD tanks and aerated, which promotes the growth of thermophilic bacteria. The bacteria—or bugs, as sanitation authority staff like to call them— feed on the organic matter. They also produce heat, so the temperatures inside the tanks stays about 140 degrees Fahrenheit. After dewatering, the resulting product looks much like topsoil and is almost odorless. With the installation of this new process, the authority has eliminated its need for incinerator fuel, and reduced air emissions. The biosolids are currently used by the New River Resource Authority landfill to cover trash each day. “The successful implementation of ATAD can be attributed to the strong partnership among the Town of Blacksburg, Virginia Tech, and the BlacksburgV.P.I. Sanitation Authority, as well as a shared pledge for finding innovative and sustainable ways to deliver public services,” said Dr. Sherwood Wilson, Vice President for Operations at Virginia Tech and authority board member.
