Alexander Black House supports community, research, and education A renovation of the house’s second floor includes new spaces for historical and genealogical research, permanent exhibits, education and community meetings

N

ewly renovated space at the Alexander Black House and Cultural Center will help strengthen the connection between Blacksburg’s past and present. The house is “Blacksburg’s living room,” according to Rhonda Morgan, the center’s executive director. “We want this to be a space where everyone feels welcome and comfortable,” she said. The Black House opened as a museum in 2014, with exhibits, a children’s room, and gift shop on the first floor. The museum has been a welcome addition to Blacksburg, and the first five years have “exceeded expectations,” Morgan said. “We have had far more community engagement and involvement than we had even hoped.” The new space will allow the museum to expand its learning and cultural activities. The renovation includes: RESTORATION Permanent exhibit space devoted to GRAND OPENING Blacksburg’s history. The exhibit will include a timeline, maps documenting the town’s progression, Saturday Oct. 5, and other items that provide insight about the 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Open house people and places of Blacksburg. Free and open to the A community collaboration room to be used as a small group meeting space for book clubs, civic public groups, and other small organizations. Demonstrations, tours, children’s activities An education and workshop room where Friday, Oct. 4, 5-7 p.m. artists, master gardeners, researchers and other Members only preview experts can share and learn with community reception members. A history and genealogy research center that will provide books, maps, photographs, and other resources to anyone who wants to discover more about Blacksburg and its residents and their own genealogy. “The main goal of the Blacksburg Museum and Cultural Center is to reflect the strong community in Blacksburg,” Morgan said. “A community is stronger when it respects its history, lives in its present and plans for its future.” To visit, volunteer, or donate, go to blacksburgmuseum.org or search Blacksburg Museum on Facebook and Instagram. Admission to the museum is free, and the space is available for event rentals. About Town Town || www.blacksburg.gov www.blacksburg.gov 3 || About

A Garden for Every Season Blacksburg blooms require year-round upkeep

A

s the weather grows cooler, Blacksburg’s beautiful flowers start to fade. But the work of the town’s landscape and grounds crews doesn’t slow down. “There’s never an idle time,” Beth Carson, Blacksburg’s horticulturist, said. In summer, watering and maintaining downtown’s hanging baskets and the many flower beds along roadsides, in medians, and beside town buildings, fills the landscaping schedule. “Our crews start watering hanging baskets at 3:30 a.m.,” Carson said. The grounds division mows miles of grass on town properties, trails, and roadsides. Downtown maintainers keep sidewalks and parking areas looking their best. By October, crews start preparing for next year’s growing season. They plant more than 4,000 bulbs, as well as new grass, trees, shrubs, and perennials. Crews also clear out and prepare beds, and work on the leaf and debris pickup schedules. Once the ground is frozen, the crews help with snow removal as well as other cool season maintenance tasks. This includes important work they cannot always do during the busy growing season, but is critical to Blacksburg’s beauty, like trimming back right-of-ways, repairing equipment, and reworking outdated property landscaping. They may also work on safety training or state required recertifications. Winter also means planning gardens for the coming year. “Our job is to make it look beautiful for everyone,” Carson said. Town plantings are usually a mix of perennials and annuals, with varieties that will be easy to care for, beautiful, and beneficial. They keep careful records, by photographing the plantings each season and taking notes about what works and what doesn’t. “We want to attract pollinators like bees and butterflies, and we’re constantly on the lookout for things that are low-maintenance,” Carson said. When you see those amazing blooms next summer, remember they are the result of a year’s worth of work and planning.
