Blackstone Publishing Welcome to Blackstone Publishing’s exciting spring 2021 list, featuring new books as well as outstanding classic reissues. This season, we are thrilled to be publishing Killer Triggers by Joe Kenda, star of Investigation Discovery’s Homicide Hunter. In this fascinating true-crime book, Kenda delves into cases he investigated or oversaw and uncovers the most common triggers for homicide. Continuing our tradition of publishing stellar works in the historical-fiction genre, our spring lineup includes Marj Charlier’s The Rebel Nun, which brings to life the true story of a rebellion led by nuns against the church in sixth-century Gaul, and Joy Lanzendorfer’s Right Back Where We Started From, a sweeping family saga that follows three generations of women from the California Gold Rush to World War II as they attempt to claim what they believe is rightfully theirs. Fans of adventure thrillers will be captivated by Harry Farthing’s powerful novel The Ghost Moths, which centers on an English climber in Tibet. The highly anticipated third book in New York Times bestselling author Nicholas Sansbury Smith’s postapocalyptic Sons of War series will release in February. Will Staples’ novel Animals, publishing in March 2021, weaves together the stories of a South African Defense Force veteran on a vigilante mission to take down an animal-trafficking syndicate, and a US insurance investigator looking into a suspicious private Florida zoo, where a tiger cub has brought a deadly disease that could unleash a human pandemic. Brian Andrews and Jeffrey Wilson’s Sons of Valor will be the first book in a riveting new Navy SEAL military-fiction series. In the literary fiction genre, following the success of his debut novel All Things Left Wild, James Wade’s second novel, River, Sing Out, will release this season. We are also proud to publish Competitive Grieving, a darkly comedic new work by acclaimed novelist Nora Zelevansky, and we will launch Cormorant Lake, the debut novel from Faith Merino. This spring, we will celebrate the centennial of James Clavell, who was born in 1921. Blackstone is proud to release newly designed, must-have reissues of Clavell’s beloved epics, including Shogun, Gai-Jin, Tai-Pan, Noble House, and more. The Blackstone team is looking forward to connecting with you and sharing this latest list of titles filled with remarkable new voices and discoveries.

Cormorant Lake A Novel By Faith Merino When Evelyn Van Pelt returns home with two children who are not her own, she discovers that deeply held secrets always rise to the surface. On a cold November night, Evelyn Van Pelt steals her roommate’s two underfed and neglected little girls from their beds and drives to the northwestern hometown she 8ed fourteen years earlier—Cormorant Lake. There, hidden in the mountains and woods, dense with fog and the cold of winter, Evelyn grapples with the guilt of what she’s done, and as she attempts to reconcile her wild independence with the responsibilities of parenthood, she reconnects with the two women who raised her—her foster mother, Nan, and her biological mother, Jubilee. But by coming home, she has set in motion a series of events that will revive the decades-old tragedy that haunts Cormorant Lake—and lead her to confront the high cost of protecting her secret. At once fantastical and deeply rooted in the natural world, Faith Merino’s deeply affecting and spirited debut novel explores the shape of family, the enduring bonds of friendship, and the imperfections of motherhood—messy and beautiful, instinctive and learned, temporal but permanently life-altering. FAITH MERINO studied English at University of the Paci7c and New York University. Her short 7ction has won awards and honorable mentions from The Moth, the Jabberwock Review, Glimmer Train, and Boulevard, among others. A former journalist, she lives in Sacramento with her husband, sons, and dogs.

JOHN J. JACOBSON

ALL THE COWBOYS AIN'T GONE MODERN TIMES CAN’T HOLD HIM BACK

All the Cowboys Ain’t Gone is the rollicking adventure story of Lincoln Smith, a young Texan living at the beginning of the twentieth century, who thinks of himself as the last true cowboy. He longs for the days of the Old West, when men like his father, a famous Texas Ranger, lived by the chivalric code. Lincoln finds himself hopelessly out of time and place in the fast-changing United States of the new century. When he gets his heart broken by a sweetheart who doesn’t appreciate his anachronistic tendencies, he does what any sensible young romantic would do: he joins the French Foreign Legion. On his way to an ancient and exotic country at the edge of the Sahara, Lincoln encounters a number of curious characters and strange adventures, from a desert hermit who can slow up time to a battle with a crocodile cult that worships the god of death. He meets them all with his own charming brand of courage and resourcefulness. Though JOHN J. JACOBSON didn’t join the French Foreign Legion after being jilted by a girlfriend, or over his displeasure of missing the last great cattle drive, he has, borrowing Churchill’s phrase, lived a rather variegated life. He was born in Nevada, grew up in the West, surfed big waves in Hawaii, circled the world thrice, survived the sixties and seventies, corporate America, and grad school. Among other degrees he has an MA in Renaissance literature from Claremont Graduate University.

The Rebel Nun By Marj Charlier A fascinating new novel based on the true story of a rebellion led by nuns against the church in sixth-century Gaul

Marj Charlier’s The Rebel Nun is based on the true story of Clotild, the daughter of a sixth-century king and his concubine, who leads a rebellion of nuns against the rising misogyny and patriarchy of the medieval church. At that time, women are afforded few choices in life: prostitution, motherhood, or the cloister. Only the latter offers them any kind of independence. By the end of the sixth century, even this is eroding as the church begins to eject women from the clergy and declares them too unclean to touch sacramental objects or even their priest-husbands. Craving the legitimacy thwarted by her bastard status, Clotild seeks to become the next abbess of the female Monastery of the Holy Cross, the most famous of the women’s cloisters of the early Middle Ages. When the bishop of Poitiers blocks her appointment and seeks to control the nunnery himself, Clotild masterminds an escape, leading a group of uncloistered nuns on a dangerous pilgrimage to beg her royal relatives to intercede on their behalf. But the bishop refuses to back down, and a bloody battle ensues. Will Clotild and her sisters succeed with their quest, or will they face excommunication, possibly even death? In the only historical novel written about the incident, The Rebel Nun is a richly imagined story about a truly remarkable heroine. MARJ CHARLIER began her writing career at daily and mid-size newspapers before joining the Wall Street Journal as a staff reporter. After twenty years in journalism, she pursued her MBA and began a second career in corporate 2nance. She has published ten novels through her own company. The Rebel Nun is her 2rst historical novel.

When rhino poachers kill two of his fellow rangers in Kruger Park, South African Defense Force veteran Cobus Venter reaches his breaking point. Quitting his job, he embarks on a vigilante mission to take down the animal-trafficking syndicate from the inside. Meanwhile, in Florida, insurance investigator Randall Knight is called to a private roadside zoo, where a new tiger cub of suspect lineage brought a virus that wiped out all the zoo’s tigers. The disease is just one species jump away from erupting into a deadly global human pandemic. What starts as a simple insurance claim leads Knight to discover a shocking new evolution in the business of illicit animal trafficking. Both men’s journeys take them from the darkest corners of Southeast Asia to the VIP gambling rooms of Macau, where they must stay alive long enough to stop a vicious international triad from ending wildlife as we know it. Animals is set in the world of global animal trafficking and follows converging story lines through a dark world of corruption and organized crime, and through the journeys of the main characters, the novel explores the factors driving the exploitation and ruin of the natural world. Though the story is >ction, the characters, locations, and plot points are almost entirely rooted in fact. They are the product of hundreds of conversations with everyone from Jane Goodall to the CIA, to Damien Mander (an ex-mercenary turned animal activist). To experience the issue >rsthand, Will Staples took a month-long research trip spanning three continents and seven countries. The journey was a profoundly transformative, life-altering experience. The author’s goal with this novel is to expose this issue to as many people as possible. To that end, all his income from this book will be donated to nonpro>t organizations dedicated to protecting wildlife. WILL STAPLES is the creator of the upcoming Disney+ drama series The Right Stuff (based on the Tom Wolfe book). As a writer, he has also worked on Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, the upcoming movie Without Remorse (starring Michael B. Jordan), the upcoming movie Sweet Girl (starring Jason Momoa), and the Jack Ryan and Shooter TV series. He has also worked on numerous video games, including the Rainbow Six and Need for Speed franchises, as well as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (which beat Avatar’s record for the biggest entertainment launch in history).

They call it Stormland: a sprawling, largely abandoned region of the southeastern coast of the USA, where climate change’s extreme weather conditions have brought about a “perfect storm” of perpetual tempests; where hurricane-strength storms return day after day, 365 days a year. The heart of Stormland is Charleston, South Carolina, a >ooded ruin where hundreds of people remain for their own peculiar reasons; where thugs prey on the weak, and a strangely benevolent cult tries to keep everyone insanely sane. Here, plutocratic evil takes advantage of Stormland’s lawlessness to cultivate a weirdly puppeted theater of cruelty. Swept into the turbulent vortex of Stormland is an unlikely duo—a former serial killer and a former US Marshal—who must work together to bring light to America’s late twenty-=rst century heart of darkness. A cyberpunk detective thriller set in a maelstrom of climatic upheaval, classism, and corrupt power, Stormland paradoxically dramatizes the resilience of the human spirit. JOHN SHIRLEY is one of the original cyberpunk writers. He is the author of numerous novels, including Demons, Crawlers, Wetbones, Cellars, Bleak History, City Come A-Walkin’, Bioshock: Rapture, and the Song Called Youth trilogy. His story collections include the Bram Stoker Award–winning Black Butter ies. Right Back Where We Started From By Joy Lanzendorfer

A family saga tracing three generations of women from the California Gold Rush to World War II as they attempt to claim what they think is rightfully theirs If misfortune hadn’t gotten in the way, Sandra Sanborn would be right where she belongs—among the rich and the privileged instead of standing outside a Hollywood studio wearing a sandwich board in hopes of someone discovering her. It’s tough breaking into acting during the Great Depression, but Sandra knows that she is destined for greatness. After all, her grandmother Vira crossed the country during the Gold Rush and established the Sanborns as one of San Francisco’s most prominent families, and her mother Mabel grew up in a lavish mansion and married a wealthy rancher. Success, Sandra feels, is in her blood. All she needs is a chance to prove it. In between failed auditions, Sandra receives a letter from a man claiming to be her real father, which calls into question everything she believes about her family history—and herself. As she tries to climb the social ladder, family secrets lurk in the background, pulling her back down. Until Sandra confronts the truth about how Vira and Mabel gained and lost their fortunes, she will always end up right back where she started from. Right Back Where We Started From is a sweeping, multigenerational work of 5ction that explores the lust for ambition that entered into the American consciousness during the Gold Rush and how it affected our nation’s ideas of success, failure, and the pursuit of happiness. It is a meticulously layered saga—at once historically rich, romantic, and suspenseful—about three determined and completely unforgettable women. JOY LANZENDORFER’S 5ction and non5ction has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Atlantic, NPR, Ploughshares, Raritan, Poetry Foundation, and many others. She was included in The Best Small Fictions anthology and was a notable in The Best American Essays 2019. Other honors include grants and residencies from the Discovered Awards for Emerging Literary Artists, Wildacres Residency Program, and the Speculative Literature Foundation.

Wren’s closest friend, her anchor since childhood, is dead. Stewart Beasley. Gone. She can’t quite believe it and she de3nitely can’t bring herself to look up the symptoms of an aneurysm. Instead of weeping, Wren’s been dreaming up the perfect funeral plans, memorial buffets, and processional songs for everyone from the corner bodega owner to her parents (none of whom show any signs of imminent demise). Stewart was a rising television star, who—for reasons Wren struggles to comprehend—often surrounded himself with sycophantic and questionable characters, amusing in his life, but intolerable in his death. When his icy mother assigns Wren the task of sorting through and disseminating his possessions alongside George (Stewart’s maddening, but oddly charming lawyer), she 3nds herself at the epicenter of a world in which she wants no part, a world where everyone wants to own a piece of Stewart’s memory and claim a stake in both his life and his death. Remembering the boy Stewart was and investigating the man he became, Wren 3nds herself wondering, did she even know this person who she once considered an extension of herself? Can you ever really know anyone? Will the real Stewart Beasley please stand up? Ultimately, in pursuit of acceptance, Wren discovers that her own true identity may be just as obscure as her friend’s. How did she land here? How much of her own reality has she been walking through blind? Competitive Grieving is a dark, touching comedy—and unlikely love story—about loss and the chaotic aftermath of death. It takes an honest look at the universal struggle to tune out the noise and grieve, to love in the face of loss, and to yearn to truly know someone who is gone forever.

Reset By Sarina Dahlan Can you love someone you don’t remember? After the Last War destroyed most of the world, survivors form a new society in four self-sustaining cities in the Mojave Desert. In the utopia of the Four Cities, inspired by the lyrics of “Imagine” and Buddhist philosophy, everything is carefully planned and controlled: the seasons, the weather—and the residents. To prevent mankind from destroying each other again, its citizens undergo a memory wipe every four years in a process called tabula rasa, a blank slate, to remove learned prejudices. With each new cycle, they begin again with new names, jobs, homes, and lives. No memories. No attachments. No wars. Aris, a scientist who shuns love, embraces tabula rasa and the excitement of unknown futures. Walling herself off from emotional attachments, she only sees relationships as pointless and avoids deep connections. But she is haunted by a recurring dream that becomes more frequent and vivid as time passes. After meeting Benja, a handsome free-spirited writer who believes his dreams of a past lover are memories, her world is turned upside down. Obsessed with <nding the Dreamers, a secret organization thought to have a way to recover memories, Benja draws her down a dangerous path toward the past. When Metis, the leader of the Dreamers, appears in Aris’s life, everything she believes falls to pieces. With little time left before the next tabula rasa, they begin a bittersweet romance, navigating love in a world where names, lives, and moments are systematically destroyed. Thought-provoking and emotionally resonant, Reset will make you consider the haunting reality of love and loss, and the indelible marks they leave behind. SARINA DAHLAN was born into an Indonesian family in Thailand, and immigrated to the United States at the age of twelve. While children in the west grow up on fairy tales, she learned parables through ghost stories, mythologies, and Japanese manga. A graduate of the University of California, San Diego, with degrees in psychology and visual arts, she has blended both disciplines in careers as an advertising producer, a corporate marketing strategist, and an awardwinning writer. She lives in California with her family and is currently raising her three children on a healthy diet of history, Thai curry, and scienti<c thinking. Reset is her <rst novel.

Sons of valor … Navy SEAL Keith “Chunk” Redman has been one of the military’s top doorkickers since the day he pinned on his trident: loyal, single-minded, lethal. Tasked to lead a new, covert team of Tier One SEALs—the most elite special operators in the world—Chunk can no longer simply rely on the status quo. To safeguard America, he needs help to stay a step ahead of its adversaries. Brilliant at spotting patterns in the data that others miss, ex–CIA analyst Whitney Watts sees evidence of a troubling link between illicit Chinese arms sales and an attack on a US military convoy in Afghanistan. If she’s right, it would portend not only massive casualties, but a devastating threat to global stability. Sons of war … From the ashes of a never-ending war, a new generation of terrorists has arisen: sophisticated, tech-savvy, and hiding in plain sight among America’s allies. Battered by the Taliban and by the West, they call themselves al Qadr—Power and Destiny—and they’re determined to wrest back control of their homeland. Armed with a powerful combat drone, they can strike with deadly precision at US forces in the region— but their ambitions reach far, far beyond that. A new legacy … The new Tier One’s Arst mission will require them to not only prove themselves, but to stop an enemy who’s using military tactics against them. Chunk and his team aren’t just the tip of the spear; they’re America’s Arst, last, and best counterterrorism defense. And they couldn’t have arrived at a more urgent—and perilous—time. SIMULTANEOUS RELEASE

A Hand to Hold in Deep Water By Shawn Nocher A deeply felt narrative about mothers and daughters, the legacy of secrets, the strength of family, and the love of those who walk us through our deepest pain.

“Beyond thrilling. Tender, erce, achingly beautiful…Add in the clarity of the writing, its supple lyricism and wry humor, and spread the news: Shawn Nocher is a writer to watch.”

—Elise Levine, author of This Wicked Tongue

Willy Cherrymill and his stepdaughter, Lacey, are deeply bruised by a past brimming with unanswered questions. It’s been thirty years since May DuBerry, Willy’s young wife and Lacey’s mother, abandoned them both leaving Willy to raise Lacey alone. Lacey Cherrymill is smart, stubborn, and focused. She’s also single mother to a young daughter recently diagnosed with a devastating illness. The last thing she needs to think about right now is the betrayal that rocked her childhood. Reluctantly, she has returned to her rural beginnings, a former dairy farm in the Maryland countryside, and to Willy, a man steeped in his own disappointments and all the guilt that goes with them. Together they will pool their wobbly emotional resources to take care of Lacey’s daughter, Tasha, all the while trying to skirt the issue of May’s mysterious disappearance. But try as she might, Lacey can’t leave it alone. Just where is May DuBerry Cherrymill and why did she leave them, and how is it that they have never talked about the wreckage she left behind? A Hand to Hold in Deep Water is a deeply felt narrative about mothers and daughters, the legacy of secrets, the way we make a family, and the love of those who walk us through our deepest pain. It is about the way we are tethered to one another and how we choose to wear those bindings. These are characters you won’t soon forget and, more so, won’t want to leave behind when you turn the last page. SHAWN NOCHER’S compelling short stories have appeared in numerous literary magazines, including SmokeLong Quarterly, Pithead Chapel, Eunoia Review, and MoonPark Review, and she has been longlisted or won honorable mentions from both SmokeLong Quarterly and Glimmer Train. She earned her master of arts in writing at Johns Hopkins University, has given wings to two children, and lives with her husband and an assortment of sassy rescue animals in Baltimore, Maryland, where she writes in a room of her own. This is her rst novel.

Our Story In 1987, in a small garage in southern Oregon, Blackstone was born. Founded by Craig and Michelle Black, the early days consisted of a small number of family members and employees working out of the Blacks’ home, building the business one cassette tape at a time. With a fresh perspective on the reading experience, Craig and Michelle, along with their trusted team, found new and innovative methods to not only produce and distribute audiobooks but also pioneer creative ways to collaborate with publishers, booksellers, and the audiobook listening community. Today we have over 14,750 audiobooks in our catalog and publish over 4,500 audiobooks a year. On the foundation of this thirty-plus-year enterprise, we launched a print and e-book venture in 2015. In that first year, we published just a handful of titles. In 2020, we will publish over eighty titles, and our list of projects continues to grow. We’re thrilled to be working with bestselling and award-winning authors like Meg Gardiner, Steve Hamilton, Reed Farrel Coleman, Catherine Ryan Howard, P. C. Cast and Kristin Cast, Don Winslow, Adrian McKinty, Cory Doctorow, Shelley Shepard Gray, Nicholas Sansbury Smith, Orson Scott Card, Matthew Mather, and Charlie Lovett, as well as debuting new talented voices like Cadwell Turnbull, Coco Ma, Jill Criswell, and Jennifer Givhan. As we continue to build the audiobook business and grow the print venture, Blackstone has strengthened its sales, marketing, production, library, and editorial teams, as well as increased its presence at BookExpo, BookCon, ALA, regional library conferences, and independent bookseller trade shows. Our overall goal is to publish groundbreaking books, both fiction and nonfiction, by the most talented writers, and to forge long-term connections with readers, booksellers, librarians, and the overall publishing community. We are committed to bringing entertaining and thoughtprovoking stories to as many people as possible in the most creative and innovative ways imaginable.
