elcome to our “It’s Just Yoga” Health & Fitness Festival! Due to overwhelming demand after our 5th spring festival at Lake Eola, we have added our first fall festival “up north” in Altamonte Springs, Cranes Roost Park! Our magazine focuses on local businesses, studios and people! We hope you enjoy reading about the topics we’ve chosen for our Fall/Winter issue, and we also thank our guest writers, Sarabeth Jackson, Sarah Burnett, Shannon Kidwell, and Dr. Brooke Stuart. All are local yogis and/or holistic experts. There’s also a very topical article on air quality and hurricane season—make sure you read it and keep your family healthy after a storm! The “It’s Just Yoga” Health & Fitness Festival is the only donation-based yoga festival in Florida. There is no ticket required to attend our festival. However, we highly recommend that you make a tax-deductible donation, benefitting “New Hope for Kids. Since 1996, New Hope for Kids has provided support and hope for Central Florida children and families during some of the most stressful and challenging times of their lives. Our Festivals raise funds for New Hope and help support their programs in helping grieving children navigate the death of a loved one, and also support programs to improve the quality of

MEET CENTRAL FLORIDA’S YOGI INFLUENCERS THE POWER OF CONNECTION The IJY Team is pleased to highlight Orlando native, Sarah Burnett, also known as “AcroSarah,” in the Fall/Winter issue of IJY Magazine.

I

’m a proud Orlando native, born and raised in the City Beautiful. After graduating high school, I was excited to leave for college and explore other cities. I went to undergrad in Gainesville and then moved to Atlanta for several years. But when I was 27, and at the height of my Saturn’s return (if you know astrology, you know exactly what I mean!), I took off on a 3-year jaunt overseas to backpack through Southeast Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and India. I became a free spirit, unattached to items and time. My only destination was to connect within myself and with others.

6 IT'S JUST YOGA MAGAZINE | CENTRAL FLORIDA | FALL/Winter 2019

As I approached my 3-year travel mark and my 30th birthday, a craving for meaning and purpose in my life’s work was growing inside of me like a brushfire. I had already completed my masters in mental health counseling while living in Atlanta, and I completed yoga teacher training in Rishikesh, India. With my newly expansive worldview and professional training, I was ready to return to Orlando and develop connection and healing through community. Well actually, I wasn’t totally ready to return to Orlando! I had been away for more than

Brené Brown (or Queen B, as I like to call her) says, “We are hardwired to connect with others; it’s what gives purpose and meaning to our lives, and without it there is suffering.” This powerful statement is exactly why we’ve seen my “Yoga Under the Stars” event at Orlando Brewing grow from 10 yogis to 100 in its existence. The class happens the 3rd Friday of every month, and it’s unlike any studio class you’ve taken—we laugh, we flow, we connect, we sip on organic beer mid-flow, and we

a decade, and Orlando was a stranger to me. But I found my tribe in this city full of strangers, and it all began when I co-founded the Orlando Acro Club just over 5 years ago. I found powerful connection through safe, healing touch and community. The beautiful part about AcroYoga is that it can only be done in partnership. You play, you trust, you fail, you succeed; you find courage, you build strength, and you find such loving support. So many of my most meaningful friendships have their roots in this community. Sarah and her mom, Petey Silveira

almost always take a dance break. But my favorite moment comes right in the middle of class, when I always ask participants to connect their hands with their neighbors in a standing pose. That’s when shift happens. That’s when I see the ways in which people are hardwired for connection. You see some people reach out effortlessly while others connect with a bit of hesitation or discomfort,

but afterwards there is this glow of smiles across the sea of people. People shift from solo flowing on their mat, to outwardly connecting with others. I have to say, it’s pretty magical. Today, five years after moving back home, I see Orlando with such new eyes. Here in the City Beautiful, we support each other. We uplift. We show up. If our city is hurting, we unite together in the spirit of love. Most importantly though, we connect. We’ve all felt that power, that healing force of connection. So, make eye contact with strangers, offer smiles and hugs, and take advantage of new opportunities every day to recharge through deep, authentic connection. A Collaboration in the Kitchen Fit Piglet Bridges the Gap Between Food and Family

BY SHANNON KIDWELL

N

avigating your family from a lifetime of preoccupied, unconscious habits, to healthier, more vibrant behaviors, requires creativity, time, and dedication. The good news is that, by being an example of wellness for your family and educating your children about their health, you can make a significant impact on their present and future well-being. Teaching them the value of self-care and personal contribution can serve as a source of purpose and motivation as they move through life. You know the story… in a typical day, with so many competing priorities like soccer games, deadlines, dentist appointments and bedtimes, dinner gets conveniently squeezed in between without much consideration. It’s no surprise that families don’t experience lighthearted camaraderie and enjoy dynamic existence with their plate so full (pun intended). It’s time to get back to the basics of life; simple meals, quality-time activities, and a full night’s sleep. These fundamentals are often overlooked in the name of “busyness,” but they are essential for a strong body, a relaxed and focused mind, and family interconnection. There is nothing more important to a parent than the gratification of a happy, healthy household. 8 IT'S JUST YOGA MAGAZINE | CENTRAL FLORIDA | FALL/Winter 2019

Children who eat meals with their parents tend to eat more fruit and vegetables as opposed to those who don’t share in these connecting opportunities with their loved ones. This type of quality time has been shown to improve academic achievement and self-esteem. In fact, teenagers tend to eat more fun foods with their friends, but look forward to eating a more wholesome dinner with their families.

Because we lead eventful lives, there will need to be some compromise; you will find some convenient, labeled food items to be necessary, like yogurt or broth, for example. The better you are at inspecting labels, the better quality of nourishment you will provide your home. (The fewer labeled products you purchase, the less you have to worry about it. Perhaps set an intention that approximately 75% of the items in your cart are fresh and not labeled at all.)

Kid’s pick up on everything. They are always observing and being influenced by the grown-ups around them. Our perspective around food consumption has a direct effect on those around us, particularly children. Conversations, behaviors, and energy transmitted while eating are powerful in the development of a young person’s eating habits. While it’s unrealistic to expect any parent to be a perfect role model, demonstrating a joyful attitude and good eating habits will positively impact your child.

Buy and eat food that comes from produce sections, farmers markets, and local co-ops. Visiting your local health food store can be a lot of fun; take the kids, ask questions and learn about all the yummy stuff to pig out on. Shopping for healthy food is simple, but can be overwhelming in the beginning, so hang in there. Once you get started, you’ll notice something that feels familiar about choosing well… it will feel intuitive and natural. Preparing meals with your kids can be fun, educational, and spark a life-long interest in cooking. Persuade the children to be involved in the shopping and food prep. While at times it may feel like more work, what better way to spend time together than explore, create and play with food together? Try this fun AND nutritious recipe with your children!

REAL Damn Good Food

COURTESY CHELSIE SAVAGE

BY CHELSIE SAVAGE

A

s a society, food remains one of the most personal things we talk about. We will gossip all day long to a room full of strangers about personal relationships, goals, or even finances. But have you ever noticed how quickly one will clam up when the topic of diet is discussed? Well—we’re going there! Our relationship with food is one of the most intimate relationships we maintain, and this relationship is crucial to our existence. Some say they just want to “eat the way they eat and not live as long,” rather than eating healthy, and that would be fine if that’s the way it was… but it’s not. If we could just eat whatever we wanted, whenever we wanted, feel amazing, and then just not wake up one morning, we would all do it! But the reality is, when we’re not choosing appropriate foods, we develop chronic diseases, become dependent on antibiotics, subject ourselves to intrusive and expensive surgeries; our bodies become self-limiting, and over time, the quality of our lives (and the lives of those who love us most) greatly depreciates. It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society. Things like bypass

surgery, chemotherapy, and being insulin dependent have become the accepted way of dealing with illnesses, while consuming a diet centered around foods grown from the earth and minimally processed is considered “too extreme”. As a holistic nutritionist, I consistently run into people who are committed to wanting to eat better but not wanting to give up the communion around food that is in our DNA. And they shouldn’t! Eating healthy is easy when it tastes good. In fact—that’s the number one reason why I became an accidental restaurateur. As I became aware of how incredibly uninformed and disconnected the restaurant industry was in making good food that was good for you, I became committed to creating restaurants that provided healthy, healing food made from quality ingredients that were also approachable, fun, and delicious—and that is the principles that my restaurants (The Sanctum and Proper & Wild) are founded on. But in an age of thousands of fad diets, contradicting philosophies of nutrition, and a multibillion-dollar health-food industry, how does one start to navigate this? What are the principles YOU can do today, in your home, to start making the transition to health for you and your family?

10 IT'S JUST YOGA MAGAZINE | CENTRAL FLORIDA | FALL/Winter 2019

1) Every single person can benefit from eating more plants. Fill your plates daily with mostly plants prepared raw or cooked and do your best to eat the rainbow to maximize phyto-nutrient consumption. 2) Eat REAL food… food made from food, and not a bunch of processed, chemical- ridden ingredients. Read your labels and get rid of the food dyes, the hydrogenated oils, the preservatives, and the refined flours & sugars, and source organic as often as possible. 3) Trade up. No need to purge your pantry all at once—slowly start combing through and upgrading current ingredients for healthier alternatives when it comes time to replenish! 4) There is no time more well spent than preparing healthy food for people you love. Healthy food does not have to be complex, but it is also not always fast, cheap, or easy. Take the time to invest in your health and teach and share with your family the value of investing in your health. Start making those small changes and see how you feel. Cook dinner with a loved one or a friend and enjoy the communion over that time and what’s on your plates. Come to one of our restaurants and feel the love and care with which your food is prepared. I hope you begin to fall in love with this relationship with food. Chelsie Savage is a board certified clinical & holistic nutritionist and Chef/Owner of The Sanctum Cafe–Orlando, The Sanctum Coffee & Juice Bar–Altamonte Springs and Proper & Wild–Winter Park. She is committed to elevating the way people thing about healthy food by serving good for you food from the healthiest ingredient she can source that also tastes damn good. Taking health promoting ingredients front and center and making people fall in love with good for you food.

magine suffering from such severe panic attacks that you couldn’t function during the day. You couldn’t keep a job. The only thing that kept you going was your kids. That was the existence that Catherine Valdivieso lived for over ten years, from 2008 to 2018. Catherine said, “I suffered from severe anxiety and panic disorder. I tried to do it alone for 10 years.” She tried acupuncture, conventional medicine, and nothing seemed to work. She had almost daily trips to the ER, with her heart racing at 180 beats per minute. As a single mother of three sons, she added, “and you can imagine what the hospital bills were like! It just added MORE stress and anxiety to my life.”

After trying virtually everything during this ten-year span, she finally decided she needed someone to help and guide her. So, she hired a life coach that specialized in anxiety. The very first item that the life coach worked on with Catherine was to change her diet to a plant based, organic diet. The second thing was that the life coach introduced breath work and meditation, and yoga. Within

ONE month, her 10 panic attacks a day were cut in half to 5 panic attacks a day. Within FIVE months, she became panic attack FREE and started sleeping through the night for the first time in many years. Catherine is relatively new to yoga. She has been actively practicing since 2018. But she is a firm believer that everything that has happened to her recently is due to the positive energy created from practicing yoga! The one issue that Catherine had with doing yoga is that various poses hurt her knees, ankles and/or bones in her feet. Catherine thought if this affected her, this pain could also affect others. She saw a need for ATTRACTIVE yoga pants that could protect these body parts, and there were none on the market. So, what did Catherine do? She developed her own brand…and “Cushy Yoga Pants” was born! Catherine has always been creative. She has a “book of ideas,” where she writes down her

inventions. Unfortunately, in the past, her severe anxiety prevented her from developing her ideas. But not anymore! She traveled the country for MONTHS, especially focused on California, looking for a manufacturer who could create a quality product up to her standards. She thought she found one, but, in the end, the company wasn’t up to her standards. Ironically, Catherine found a manufacturer 20 minutes from her home in Central Florida—EKL Fashion—to take over manufacturing her “Cushy Yoga Pants.” A few months ago, another serendipitous event occurred. Catherine saw some office space that would be the perfect place to open a yoga studio. And voilá!! “Cushy Yoga” in Avalon Park was born. Opening in early September, she has 8 yoga instructors to meet a wide variety of interests. And now, Cushy Yoga pants are now sold out of “Cushy Yoga’s” studio location! And, stay tuned…you may see Catherine and “Cushy Yoga” on TV. She has met with the

producers of ABC’s hit show, “Shark Tank” and is going through the process to appear on the show. (She is not able to discuss the status, due to confidentiality reasons, but still—how cool is this?). Catherine continues to surround herself with likeminded people. Lot’s of positive energy is encircling her, and good things are continuing to happen. One of the performers on ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars,” Oksana Platero, wears Cushy Yoga pants when practicing! Tyrone Davis, who is Seattle Seahawk’s QB Russell Wilson’s performance trainer, is excited about his client using the men’s version of Cushy Yoga Pants. Yoga saved Catherine from severe anxiety and panic attacks, and also, combined with her own creativity and drive, has also created a new passion and career!

A CALL TO PRESENCE: TIMELESS CONNECTION FOR GENERATIONS TO COME BY SARABETH JACKSON

COURTESY SARABETH JACKSON

living in the moment

Sarabeth Jackson and her friend, Mary

I

’ll never forget meeting 87-year-old Mary in a yoga class on my first trip to Hawaii. Her mat was right in front of mine, and though I did my best to keep my focus on my practice, I couldn’t help but watch in amazement as her arthritic toes held her body in a graceful Warrior 3 pose. I could tell from her energy and the way she transitioned through sequences, she had grit. She didn’t let being a little wobbly stop her. As we were rolling up our mats, I heard her in conversation with a local, saying she had just returned from a solo cruise to Alaska and how good it felt to get back to the studio. That was it; I had to know her. I asked if I could buy her a tea and she joyfully suggested we meet at the local coffee shop. We spent a solid hour sitting outside talking among the neighborhood roosters. She sipped her mocha frap as the summer sun came through the tree leaves above us and spoke passionately about motherhood, our political climate, feminism, intuition, and of course, yoga. She found yoga in her 60s. When I found out her age, I told her my grandfather was 92 and that he tries his best to stay with the times, using Facebook and other online platforms. Aghast, she made a face and said, “Oh no, I don’t need any of that!” I laughed, and replied, “Tell me more about that.” I can remember her tone as clear as day; she almost sang her response. “Well, I’d rather be present! I have this sky! And this bush over here! And you! I’m here connecting with you directly, now why would I want anything less than that?”

She’s right; we wouldn’t want anything less than that. I finished out that trip with a digital detox. I’m not shaming or trying to change anyone —I believe in the benefits of social media just as much as the next person, and I acknowledge that I am on my phone probably more than I would like to admit. But in this current age of information, when life can be chaotic, busy is glorified, and our only break is screen time, I am posing the question, “How can we practice presence?” The answer is mindfulness, undoubtedly, and it is a choice. But we have to know that presence is something to be desired in the first place to want to practice it. Here are my thoughts on that. If you are not present, you are living in the future or the past, which can consume you with fear, anticipation, and regret. Living in the present allows you to choose how you want to shape your life by observing and deciding how you want to feel in each singular moment and noting if the thoughts you’re having are serving you. Presence allows the deep knowing that you can make empowering decisions with every breath and choose to believe your betterfeeling thoughts. The gifts of practicing mindful presence are many, but in a very short amount of time you will begin to see increased resilience, ability to overcome challenges, reduced stress levels, increased focus, and improved emotional awareness and overall wellness.

Here are three ways to practice presence on a regular basis: 1. Open your senses and connect to your breath. The quickest way to get present is to notice your surroundings. Stop what you’re doing, and for 60 seconds, notice what you see, what you hear, what you can touch. Then simply take five slow, deep breaths. Your breath is always with you and is accessible at any time as a grounding and centering tool, helping you to calm your nervous system in times of stress. 2. Yoga and Meditation. Ever tried a new balancing posture while thinking about your to-do list? It’s not very effective. Yoga and meditation train your brain to think

“To be unavailable to our friends and family, to be unable to find time for the sunset (or even know that the sun has set at all), to whiz through our obligations without time for a single, mindful breath, this has become the model of a successful life.” —Wayne Muller

about one thing, and one thing only. They build your focus, strengthen your mind and your will power, shut off the part of your brain that is in charge of over- thinking and worrying, and shift the way you see things. And deep meditation literally reverses aging and heals you from the inside out (look it up!). If you’re new to meditation, try guided meditation. Yoga Nidra is a form of guided meditation that slows down your brain waves, allowing for the deepest meditation you can reach, in the fastest manner, and it feels SO good. A 45-minute Yoga Nidra practice gives your body the same amount of rest as a 3-hour nap!

3. Flow State. Have you noticed how quickly time passes when you’re engulfed in your favorite activity or “in the zone?” That’s flow state. Flow state deactivates that same part of your brain that over- thinks and causes anxiety (it’s called the Default Mode Network, and it is responsible for your inner voice and sense of Self). It allows you to calm the “monkey mind” and just be present with what is. So, get into your flow and tune out distractions! Create! Or find work you love and dive in! This in itself is practicing presence.

A friend recently shared this quote and it struck a chord for me, relative to exactly what we’re talking about today.

We’ve all heard that time is currency. We have to make time to do things that serve our highest selves and give us the ability to truly enjoy life. No matter what we think we’re “supposed” to be doing or feeling, nothing is as important as our inner guidance system when it comes to shaping our own reality, and mindful presence strengthens our inner guidance system like nothing else can. So, this is why we practice. We cannot allow true connection to be a concept of generations’ past. Our disconnection, our numbing habits, our overloaded schedules are all a call to go inward. A call to our heart’s compass. A call to greater love. A call to come back to this very moment and consciously decide how you want to live and feel, over and over again, right here and now. It is a call to presence.

Autumn: The Season to Detox Your Home and Body… BY IJY STAFF

I

n Florida, we do not have the “stereotypical” autumn images that are conjured up by Hollywood, or from your own childhood memories of growing up somewhere “up north.” Now we have many beautiful days in the fall here in the Orlando area. But, we also get to experience the “peak” of hurricane season during the fall months! We stay glued to the television, gauging the seriousness of the storm, and hope that Jim Cantore is not sent anywhere near us! Because if he is, or if he’s even close, that means we have to stay indoors, and possibly live off of Oreos, Fritos, Pop-Tarts and Peanut Butter, because everyone knows that this is “Hurricane Food,” and the calories and nutrition (or lack thereof) don’t count when eating during a storm. But, once the storm passes, and you are left with a bloated belly, and possible damage to your home, you need to regroup. In recent years, Orlando has felt serious effects from Hurricanes’ Matthew and Irma. (We were very fortunate to have Hurricane Dorian miss us, but our hearts collectively hurt for the Bahamian people.) We all know that hurricanes can cause property damage, and harm you physically if you are unprepared for the storm. But, did you also know that these storms can have long-term effects to your home and health, that are not as easily detected? To help us all get through the remainder of the fall Hurricane Season, IJY Staff is providing you with some tips from the experts at Air Quality Assessors (AQA) on how to “detox” your home from the primary contaminant that occurs due to moisture— MOLD. I couldn’t find any experts that could specifically “detox” my body from the effects of Hurricane Oreos, but Jennifer Partridge, from the Chopra Center, has given excellent advice on how to detox your body with certain yoga poses.

Richie Kidwell, owner of Air Quality Assessors, says that mold is a danger after a major storm, not just to your home, but to your health. Look for his tips below, to prevent this health hazard!

DETOX YOUR HOME

Richie Kidwell, the owner of AQA, says “The most common damage you will find to a home, besides wind-related damage, will be due to water from precipitation getting into the house. The high winds most commonly cause damage to the roof, including the shingles and gutters, siding, windows, garages and sheds. This damage makes your house susceptible to water damage. Water damage can quickly turn into a mold remediation issue if you do not take steps to get rid of the water in the home as soon as possible. Mold resulting from water damage can seriously affect the health of those who live in the household!”

Steps Toward a Healthier Home

Air Quality Assessors has provided us with some quick steps you can take to protect your home after a major storm/hurricane: • Create airflow through the house and ventilate the area by opening doors and windows. Use a dehumidifier where needed. • Dry any wet items that you find as soon as possible, and throw away anything that was damaged too badly for use in the future. • Ensure any mold remediation is done by a licensed professional in the field. • Deep clean the entire home to make sure there isn’t any moisture lurking around, • Take precautions to prevent futurewater intrusion with home repairs both indoors and outdoors. Consider using a mold

resistant paint for areas such as the bath- room, kitchen, etc. when repainting. Create a structured plan for cleaning, drying, and remediation so you aren't scrambling if it happens again.

If you’re worried about mold sneaking up on you, these are signs that AQA says to be on the lookout for: • You should be especially vigilant if you’ve recently come across excess moisture recently within your home. • If you happen to notice visible spots or discoloration on the surfaces of your home which could be fuzzy or flat, that’s a sign that there is mold growing. • Mold often has a distinguishable musty and earthy odor, which is another thing to look out for. • Finally, listen to your body! Mold impacts the air quality by saturating it with spores that contain mycotoxins. If you’re display ing unexplained allergy symptoms, such as respiratory irritation, headaches, or dizziness, you could be exposing yourself to mold within the home. ABOUT AIR QUALITY ASSESSORS Air Quality Assessors of Florida (AQA), is a statewide indoor air quality testing and consultation service provider, that has been in business for over 10 years! Their services range from residential mold inspections, to large commercial property clearance letters from storm damage. In fact, AQA provides many building damage related services, especially in the field of mold and moisture assessment. AQA strongly believes in helping their clients achieve a healthy living environment.

knee. Wrap your right arm around the left knee, positioning the knee in the crook of the right elbow. After resting in this position for several breaths, swap sides and repeat.

When you feel lethargic and weighed down by stress (watching Jim Cantore non-stop), a lack of exercise (can’t go outside), and poor food choices (aforementioned Oreos), give your body and mind a reboot with a detox through yoga. You will feel cleaner on the inside, and more energetic on the outside.

Detox Benefits: This yoga twist helps to

stimulate digestion and remove the impurities of the body. As the abdominal organs are squeezed, the kidney and liver are stimulated. When the twist is released, blood then enters the organs.

Parivrtta Utkatasana (Revolved Chair Pose) around your right leg as you rest the back of your left thigh on the right thigh. Cross your arms at the elbows, left over right. Join the palms of your hands together keeping the fingers pointed upward. Inhale and hold the posture for the duration of the inhaled breath. Exhale and return to the Tadasana pose. Repeat the posture on the opposite side, wrapping the right leg over the left and the right arm over left.
