Sheena Britton

A PLACE SHE CALLS

BY JENNIFER LUCE

Like a flower blossoming in the sunlight, Sheena’s journey is a true illustration of growth. She began her career in the City of Sanford’s Utilities Department ten years ago and was promoted several times until she landed the position in Economic and Community Development as an administrative assistant. Sheena worked as an assistant for Bob Turk, the former Economic Development Director for the City of Sanford. This experience helped Sheena realize just how fast the place she called home was evolving. As her men-

heena Britton, a fourth-generation Sanfordite, has watched the City of Sanford develop exponentially over the years. A local resident, born and raised in Sanford, Sheena is all about a sense of community. Her first years of life began in Sanford on East First street, right on the river. She graduated from Winter Springs High School and began establishing a name for herself in the community at an early age. She soon experienced the joys of becoming a parent. She proudly proclaims that three of her greatest accomplishments are her daughters: Kiya, Haley, and Terry, all three of whom are fifth-generation Sanfordites. Kiya is currently a Junior at Bethune Cookman University, Haley is a Senior at Seminole High School, and Terry is a Sophomore at Seminole High School. Sheena is married to her husband, Morris, and together they have established a strong foundation and rooted themselves deeply in the Sanford community.

tor and leader, Mr. Turk encouraged her to attend every meeting with him, so she could plant her own seeds in the community. She attended numerous conferences and was finally introduced to the International Economic Development Council (IEDC). And just like a plant absorbing water to help reach its full potential, Sheena absorbed as much as she could, so in return, she could pour back into her very own community. Sheena became a voice for the city, and her professional development soared as she became the first African-American Commissioner in District 1, which was established in 1877. Sheena had to resign from her position at the City of Sanford after 10 years. She worked with others to create strategies to further develop the community. It was also during this pivotal moment in her life where she chose to advance her mission and explore greater ways to add personal value to her community. Sheena founded her own company, The Bokey Girl-the Creative Planner.

JESSICA CARVAJAL PHOTOGRAPHY

When creating her company, her main goal was to help Sanford transform even more than it already has over the years. She focuses on creative ways to improve the city, such as taking on tasks like home refreshing and interior design. She also gets to know the people of her community better as she plans events such as surprise birthday and engagement parties. Word of mouth has been her best form of advertising. It is a priority for Sheena to invest in her city. If she can purchase items for work assignments from a local vendor, she’s all in! Even the name of her company was derived from Sanford, the city she loves so much. She has experienced major progress in other areas of her life beyond her professional journey. Witnessing all three of her daughters’ developments as they mature and take on more responsibility is exciting. Sheena keeps herself grounded by spending much of her time in her garden, which she refers to as her therapy. This hobby began at an early age because it was an activity that most of her family participated in and enjoyed. Sheena says, “There is a true love for the Bokey Soil.” She reminisces that some of her best memories were in her grandmother’s garden.

fore, having my garden in the front of my house, where it is visible, urges neighbors and other people passing by to strike up conversations while I am outside harvesting and helping my garden flourish." Through her love of gardening, she has found a way to educate the community by teaching classes about food production. In addition, she publishes content on her social-media page, “You Grow, Girl Bokey.” Taking it a step further, she shares helpful tips on how to maintain a successful garden right here in her hometown, the wonderful city of Sanford.

Today, Sheena is one of a very few gardeners in the entire city who cultivates a garden in her front yard. Over the last twenty years, she has been working feverishly to expand her garden. When asked why she would plant a garden in her front yard, she states that it was intentional to encouraging neighbors to visit frequently. “We live in such a “garage” community; there-

She feels grateful to be a part of Sanford’s beautiful transformation. Witnessing the city’s evolution and contributing to it has been extremely rewarding throughout the years. She believes true growth is never by mere chance, but rather is the result of many forces working together. Sheena’s “keep going, keep growing” mindset has helped her positively impact a

community that she values immensely. She proudly boasts about all the city has to offer, recognizing Sanford for being the only city other than Jacksonville in the entire state to have an Amtrak, Sunrail, major waterfront, international airport, and zoo which are all located off an interstate. Sanford is her home, a place where she will continue supporting and encouraging prosperity. To her, Sanford is a city she will forever invest in and always plant her seeds. n Jennifer serves as the VP of Global Human Resources at Jeunesse, a wellness company dedicated to redefining youth. She has proven leadership abilities, creating a culture where employees enjoy coming to work. That's why we're one of the fastest-growing cities, best places to live, and a popular place to conduct business within Central Florida.

Because this is our Wedding Guide special edition, I invite you to send me your marriage journey/love story before May 15th, 2022. These beautiful stories will be published on our website. Sanford Y Wedding Guide

ou’re planning a wedding—congrats! You are now in charge of one of the largest group projects you have ever been assigned. But don’t worry! You already have the perfect partner, and now this guide is going to help you decide on the details.

BY IZZY MENDEZ

Downtown Sanford is the perfect location for any couple looking for that elegant yet simple, special yet classic, look. It may be overwhelming when trying to figure out all these details, but making decisions little by little is the best way to make sure your stress is limited. Every part of this process should be an enjoyable experience that brings you excitement and happiness. Granted, sometimes things are out of your control, and that’s okay! We are here to help you with some tips to make that special day full of love and laughter and to achieve your happily ever after.

1. Remember: There is no right or wrong in wedding planning

The hardest thing to remember when planning a wedding is that nothing is required—except maybe a ceremony and some food for your guests (we don’t want anyone to be hangry!). Everything else that seems “the norm” is completely up to you. Consider sitting down with your partner and creating a list of the top three elements that are most important to you. This will help when deciding what part of your budget to spend on what. Is it florals? photography? venue? Deciding on these elements together will help when navigating your finances.

Weddings can put financial stress on a couple, but it doesn’t have to. Just because things are expensive does not always make them better. Communicating and setting a budget with your partner is key to helping this process go smoothly. No longer are there wedding rules for who pays for what. Decide how much you would like to spend with your partner, and if family members decide to contribute, ask what they would like to see the money go toward.

3. Don’t be afraid to ask for help Model: Angela Zirkle Wedding Dress Designer: Rolando Caballero Photo: Mastropieces Photography

Location: Venue 1902 Hair & Makeup: Beauty Bella Glam Flowers: Sanford Floral Marketing

Rolando Caballero is a Fashion Designer with 22 years of experience in haute couture. He was born in Venezuela, a country known for its beautiful participants in international beauty pageants. This has allowed him to dress representatives of important countries in Miss Universe pageants.

Rolando Caballero Diseñador de modas con 22 años de experiencia en alta costura. Nació en Venezuela, un país conocido por sus hermosas participantes en concursos de belleza internacionales. Esto le ha permitido vestir a representantes de importantes países en Miss Universo.

Rolando said, "I had to close my atelier in Caracas, the capital of my country, and I hope to soon open my atelier in this beautiful city and fulfill my American dream with love and freedom! I am passionate about weddings and beautiful bridal gowns and, I love to create, and that is one of my specialties. This gown that I am presenting in this special edition of the Sanford Wedding Guide has inspired me in a romantic style with flowers, and a corset that helps to enhance the silhouette in a more feminine and delicate way."

"Tuve que cerrar mi atelier en Caracas, la capital de mi país, y espero pronto abrir mi atelier en esta hermosa ciudad y cumplir mi sueño americano con amor y libertad!. Soy un apasionado de las bodas y sus hermosos vestidos, me encanta crear, y esa es una de mis especialidades. Este vestido que presento en esta edición especial de la Guía de bodas de Sanford, me inspiré en un estilo romántico con flores y corsé que ayuda a realzar la silueta de una manera más femenina y delicada.”

Projects such as choosing invitations, favors, venue, etc., or any DIY projects typically take a lot of time, and family or any bridal party member who live near you may be willing to help. You can save time and money by doing some elements yourself. For example, you can find centerpiece inspiration on sites such as Pinterest and easy DIY instructions. Break out the wine and a charcuterie board and make the night fun! In this edition of My Sanford Magazine, you will find businesses that can help you organize your wedding within your budget. They will work with you to make sure that your wedding day will not decimate your bank account.

DANIELLA HUME, MASTROPIECES PHOTOGRAPHY @MASTROPIECESPHOTOGRAPHY

2. Communication is key

4. Decide on key elements

Making the major decisions such as guest count, location, and date should be tackled first. Having a general idea of each of these choices will be an enormous help when looking for a venue. If you are trying to be budget conscious, consider picking a time of year where it is off-peak season in your location of choice—for example, summer in Florida is a time when venues are typically less expensive. Venue 1902 in Downtown Sanford is the perfect place to help you create your dream wedding day. Their style can range from a classic, intimate ceremony to an elegant and glamorous reception with customizable packages to help create a day beyond your expectations.

5. Pick your people

Once you have the major decisions made, you can then move on to deciding on key people who will be there to help make your day special. Getting quotes and information from different vendors, such as dress designers or wedding stores, hair stylists and makeup artists, floral shops, DJs, or a live band, is a great way to compare pricing and services. Our best advice? Stalk them! Look at their social-media platforms to get real-time reviews and photos of their work and see what works for you. Look for local places that offer personal services for brides. Being able to do a trial run is very important, so you can talk specifics with your vendors about any services or looks you want.

Downtown Sanford is a perfect backdrop for your wedding, where you can create intimate ceremonies with receptions at a local restaurants, or pick a larger venue for your guests to dance the night away. Its streets and charming historic buildings allow you to celebrate a dream wedding. Can you imagine what it would be like to ride around the city in a golf cart wearing your wedding dress? Can you imagine what it would be like to enjoy the day with your guests aboard a ship? Whatever you choose, you will have a special day to remember always. n Izzy Mendez, her husband James and their dog Charlie moved to Sanford in 2017 and fell in love with it the moment they walked down the beautiful streets of downtown. ART ENRICHES

Everyone BY LISA HOLDER

T

he City of Sanford is well known for its historic charm, beauty, and vibrant downtown. These fine attributes are enhanced by the growing public art for all to enjoy.

What is public art?

Public art displays its magnificence by way of sculptures, murals, photography, paintings, stained glass, landscape, pop-ups, and even displays in vacant storefronts. Public art does not limit itself to being displayed outdoors; it can also include exhibits that are indoors or in semi-enclosed spaces.

So, how does all this gorgeous art make its way to the City of Sanford?

The Public Art Commission (PAC) is a dedicated group of art enthusiasts, appointed by the City Commission, who tirelessly work behind the scenes to bring art to the community. Virginia Poe, Chair of the Sanford Public Art Commission, states, “The City of Sanford’s Public Art Commission seeks to enrich the lives of Sanford’s residents and visitors by providing diverse public-art experiences that can be permanent, temporary, pop-up, or seasonal displays.” The PAC is responsible for advocating for public art, acquiring the art, securing funding, promoting, and educating the public through outreach education, media, and social events—not an easy task considering the Public Art Commission consists of five members: Sally Dehler, Kimberly House, Virginia Poe (Chairperson), Rosemary Closson, Reggie Santilli, and City Commissioner Patty Mahany.

This group of dedicated volunteers are composed of artists, educators, and leaders. Mayor Art Woodruff said, “The work of the Public Art Commission, bringing both temporary and permanent art installations to Sanford, is just one greater thing to love about the City. The murals, stained glass, utility box wraps, and seagull exhibit that have recently been installed are just a glimpse at what can be done to enhance Sanford through art.”

How does one go about finding the public art on display in Sanford?

To view and locate the various art works visit www.sanfordfl.gov/publicart. You can also check out the new digital interactive map of the installed Utility Box Art Wraps throughout downtown. The Utility Box Art Wrap Project was created to enhance the urban environment and further the tourism and economic potential that transforms ordinary infrastructure into public works of art. The project area includes 18 utility boxes within the City’s Downtown Redevelopment area. The future plan is to offer opportunities for artists to create more utility box art wraps throughout the entire City.

Another site for public art is to visit the Art in Chambers Exhibit. Visitors can check out the latest exhibit by visiting the Commission Chambers, located at City Hall, 300 N. Park Avenue on the first floor. The Art in Chambers exhibit is open to the public 30 minutes before the start of all Public Meetings. Be sure to check out the current exhibit, Seminole County Printmakers. These rotating exhibits offer art aficionados new and exciting art works to appreciate several times throughout the year.

seagulls with 6 feet wing spans create an optical illusion of birds in flight by playing off the sunlight. This new sculpture exhibit has become a fan favorite adding to the natural beauty of the RiverWalk and Lake Monroe.

How does the Public Art Commission go about finding new art to display through the city?

The City’s Call to Artist program is for artists who are interested in submitting their works toward public art projects. Artists are encouraged to email Lisa Holder, City of Sanford Communications Officer and Public Art Commission Staff Liaison, via email at lisa.holder@sanfordfl.gov to be added to the Call to Artist list and/or to the Mural Call To Artist list for mural art projects specifically.

How does the Public Art Commission procure funding?

There is a new rotating public art exhibit location on the 2nd floor of City Hall, currently on display is “Hidden Florida” photographs by nature photographer Reg Garner. If you cannot make it in person to City Hall, the City offers virtual art events of the rotating exhibits for viewing on the City of Sanford’s YouTube Channel, where the artists share their own perspectives on their works of art.

Enriching the city with public art is an enormous task made possible by the volunteer efforts of the Public Arts Commission who continue to find talented artists to submit their works of art. Special thank you to the Sanford Community Redevelopment Agency and the City of Sanford, which help fund the art exhibits. The Public Art Commission is also grateful for the City of Sanford’s Public Works and Recreation Departments, who not only install the art exhibits, lighting and landscaping, but also maintain the public art exhibits year-round.

If you are in the mood to couple our beautiful Florida weather with a stunning sculpture, check out the newly installed Seagulls exhibit located on the RiverWalk. Five stainless-steel

As you can imagine, community support is relied upon to keep public art moving forward. Sponsorship and donation opportunities are in the works. Businesses are also encouraged

to support the public art program through sponsorships. One example could be a building/business owner allowing the side of their building to be used as a canvas for a stunning mural. The amount of time, energy, and effort that goes into bringing residents and visitors unique art is certainly a labor of love. Stay tuned for City of Sanford Public Art exhibit updates and call to artist opportunities by visiting www.sanfordfl.gov/publicart, My Sanford Magazine, or by attending a Public Art Commission public meeting held monthly on the 4th Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. at City Hall. n

DOWNTOWN SANFORD

T

he secret has long been out: Historic Downtown Sanford is not just the place to play, it is also the place to live—that is, if you are craving authentic, “organically grown” neighborhoods, history, walkability, and a true feeling of community. Below are just a few reasons why this is so attractive.

Downtown Sanford— What You Get for Your Money

Urban Lifestyle: Walk (or bike) to everything! From restaurants, breweries/bars, shops and now even a full grocery store, downtown residents have easy access to all of it.

Golf Cart Zone: Downtown Sanford and its surrounding areas are part of the Sanford Golf Cart Zone, which allows residents to drive their golf carts down to where all the action is. A relaxed lifestyle like that is hard to find anywhere else in Central Florida.

GETTING TO KNOW

JOHN GYLLIN, ED.D. Vice President, Resource and Economic Development Executive Director, Foundation for Seminole State College of Florida, Inc. B Y P E R L A B. C R O S B Y

M

y Sanford Magazine sat down with John Gyllin Ed.D., Vice President, Resource and Economic Development Executive Director, Foundation for Seminole State College of Florida, Inc. to discuss the Foundation for Seminole Sate College.

Please start by introducing yourself and tell us about your background?

I am a proud native Floridian. I was born and raised on the east coast of Florida, in Cape Canaveral. I grew up in Merritt Island and graduated from Cocoa High School. My family moved from New York to Florida in the late 1960s. My dad started a fishing-rod manufacturing company, and we sold rods and tackle all over the state. Growing up, I would travel with my dad to tackle shops all over the coastal communities of Florida, selling rods. I fell in love with Florida, travel, and the coast. I was a big sports kid in my youth. I played all sports and as I grew older, and bigger, I gave football a try, which opened the door to my higher ed journey. I was the first in my family to graduate from college, a small school in Arkansas, to play football. That changed my life. While in Arkansas, I got really involved in all aspects of college life, student activities, Greek life, and sports. When I graduated, I didn’t know what to do, but was offered two assistantships to stay in school, get a master’s degree, and work on campus. That changed my whole life trajectory, and I knew I wanted to work in higher education. I have been in higher education for about 25 years and have worked at five different schools. I also completed my doctorate during that time. I moved back to Florida and Seminole State in 2011 and have been home ever since.

John Gyllin, ED.D.

I am an example of the power of education. My family had no understanding of higher edification or the impact of what a college degree or post-secondary education could do for one’s life. The opportunity to go to college changed my entire life and provided opportunity that I never thought could happen. When I hear stories of students who have had a life like mine, who have a chance to change and become something larger than what they envisioned, that motivates me. It’s generational. We change lives and generations of lives, just by opening opportunities for people to better themselves and change their path. I lead a group of volunteer community leaders to identify and secure support for Seminole State College. Institutions like Seminole State are the backbone of the workforce in Florida. We are not funded at the level that is needed to do all the things to make a difference. The foundation supports these key

initiatives and raises support for scholarships, programs, and funding for a community of close to 30,000 people. It’s heartwarming and overwhelming at times, but so very rewarding.

I love to travel, a good beach bar, food experiences, sports, especially college football, and making people smile. n

What are the criteria for students who have benefited from the Foundation?

JP PHOTOGRAPHY

We support so many different students, and we have program funds for many different degrees and certificates. We have so many types of scholarships that assist all types of students. Many of our students have strong financial needs, and they are afforded opportunities that others may already have. We assist first-generation students like me. We assist minority students. We assist students in certain degrees and certificates. We assist thousands of students every year!

Who or what is your greatest inspiration?

I get inspiration from so many people, but my dad and mom are my greatest inspirations. Dad never finished high school and served in the Navy in WWII. I am so proud of his service.

ABOUT THE FOUNDATION FOR SEMINOLE STATE COLLEGE

He passed a long time ago and is interred at Arlington National Cemetery. He had an incredibly strong work ethic, and an insatiable appetite to learn. He always taught me the greatest form of education is travel and experience. I agree. My mom was a mean, tough woman who is now one of the sweetest, most philanthropic people I know. She gives of her time and talent to so many charitable causes. She inspires me to help others the same way she helps so many.

The Foundation for Seminole State College, founded in 1968, is a not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) corporation that enhances the College's programs and services through the development and management of private contributions, public grants, and community partnerships. For more information, visit www.seminolestate.edu/foundation or email the Foundation directly at foundation@seminolestate.edu On February 12, 2022, the Foundation for Seminole State College held its 38th Annual Dreams Gala to benefit the College's scholarships and student programs. Presented by Addition Financial, the 2022 event was inspired by Valentine's Day.

will not go hungry and will have good eats no matter what you choose. The two most popular are Sanford’s first microbrewery, Wop’s Hops Brewing Company, and Sanford’s largest microbrewery, Sanford Brewing Company, both with great kitchens and fine menus.

SPRINGTIME DINING

IN DOWNTOWN SANFORD BY LEON KONIECZNY

D

owntown Sanford boasts an assortment of award-winning restaurants, and in the past few years, it has grown to become a Central Florida mecca for those who love and appreciate great food, beverages, and service provided by local owners in a unique, historic downtown. There is no better time to visit Downtown Sanford than in the springtime which brings mild weather, lots of sun, and a wide assortment of outdoor dining choices—there literally is something for everyone, all concentrated within a few blocks of Sanford’s historic downtown. Downtown Sanford has many buildings on the National Historic Register, each with a rich history and interesting story behind it, and many are unique restaurants and bars, and almost without exception, outdoor dining space is abundant. Undoubtedly, Downtown Sanford’s premier destination restaurant is the Willow Tree Café, a downtown fixture for over 20 years. When “The Tree” (as locals know it) first opened, Sanford had no “dining scene.” But over the years, The Tree has grown tremendously along with all of downtown, and it has become a Central Florida destination—folks come to Sanford specifically

to eat at the Willow Tree. All of Sanford’s dining and drinking venues have exploded in the last number of years and downtown has seen tremendous growth and improvement. Dining in Downtown Sanford on a weekend has one single caveat—reservations are often needed for some of the busier restaurants, and that is a good thing. But even on a packed weekend, there is bound to be good eats to be found somewhere. The triumvirate of great dining experiences in Sanford consists of three extremely popular places: The Tennessee Truffle, The District, and The Old Jailhouse. Reservations are needed at these establishments on most weekends, and with good reason—each of these award-winning restaurants provides exceptional cuisine along with Sanford’s usual great, friendly service. You’ll see many locals here and will feel welcomed and made to feel right at home. There are many other great dining opportunities in Downtown Sanford, and not all of them are restaurants. Sanford boasts several microbreweries and bars/pubs, and some of them have exceptional kitchens, from gourmet-quality cuisine to full- course dinners to pub grub. You

Variety and the epitome of small, mom-and-pop joints are the hallmarks of Henry’s Depot, where you can find a selection of good eats. Enjoy a craft cocktail at The Basin in a historic railroad depot. Can life get any better? Sanford is growing rapidly. The Yardery Sanford just opened its doors, and it is what its name implies—a big, open, outdoor space with fun and games and food and drink for the whole family. Construction is ongoing for the spacious “Nation Project,” which is expected to be a destination restaurant opening next year. Currently, several other spaces are undergoing renovation. Be assured, they will be welcome additions to Sanford’s dining scene. Sanford is growing and full of great dining (and drinking) experiences in a walkable, historic, downtown. Once you experience Downtown Sanford, I hope you will return. n Leon Konieczny is a local Central Florida foodie and food blogger who’s been writing about Sanford and Seminole County area “good eats” restaurants for the past twelve years. He’s big into eating at local mom ‘n’ pop shops where high quality ingredients, love, and a dose of home cooking make all the difference. While he occasionally eats at the big chains, he claims it’s only to remind him where a real quality dining experience lurks — in the small restaurants which are the heart and soul of every neighborhood and community.

The Breezway Restaurant and Bar The Sanford Special: Indiana breaded Pork Tenderloin sandwich

Lots of smaller mom-and-pop restaurants dot the downtown area—Downtown Sanford has no chain restaurants. If sitting on First Street and people-watching is your thing, you can’t go wrong at Sanford’s premier diner, the Colonial Room. Other great lunch/dinner outdoor dining includes Christo’s, and The Breezeway. Do you want a magnificent view? Try St. John’s River Steak & Seafood, which has a fantastic view of the St. John’s River and Lake Monroe as well as great food. Do tacos, margaritas, and more grab your attention? Give the popular El Zocalo a try. Do you need a break from eating, or just some time to relax? There are lots of great drinking establishments—from coffee to craft brews to craft cocktails—and Sanford even has its very own craft distillery, Loggerhead Distillery, where you can sample and purchase their craft distilled spirits. Nearly every downtown venue offers outdoor seating, where you can watch the world go by and enjoy Florida’s great weather.

FACE OF

DOWNTOWN SANFORD After a 22-year career in law, Victoria was ready to return to her South Carolina roots. “My grandmother, Julia Robinson, taught me everything I know about baking. Her passion was feeding everyone in the small town of Bishopville,” Victoria said. “Food is what brings our culture together.” When the world was faced with the onset of a global pandemic, it was the best opportunity for Victoria to bring an end to a career in law and do her part to bring people together through food— #MadeFromScratch, old-fashioned bundt cakes, custom cakes, cobblers, and pies are what she offers to Sanford residents. During our time of fear and uncertainty, one thing held true: we needed something to celebrate! What better way to celebrate than with cake!

Oak Avenue. You can also order via their website at www.SimplyHomemade1913.com or www.OvenToTableFresh.com

Simply Homemade provides a daily offering of over 25 flavors for any cake of your choice. Her cakes made it possible for Victoria to do the one thing that has always brought her joy: GIVE! After being open for only eight months, Simply Homemade 1913 was able to bestow its first scholarship. They provided a $500-per-semester scholarship to a deserving Airman to help her pursue her college degree. In addition to a scholarship, SH1913 has created “Cake It Forward.” Cake It Forward allows this small business owner to give away free cookies or bundt cakes to anyone who may be experiencing financial difficulty. “We are able to give, because of YOU! Your tips are retained in the bakery and those tips are used to give free items to anyone in need,” Victoria said. As one of seven children, she knows what it means to struggle. Nine Things to Be Mindful of as You Begin

YOUR YOGA JOURNEY

Y

oga is much more than poses. As a matter of fact, the poses or “asana” (pronounced aa-suh-nuh) are the third of the Eight Limbs of Yoga.

As you begin your yoga journey, there are many things to consider as you walk into your first class:

1. Try different instructors. I can’t impress this upon you enough. Each instructor has his or her individual style of teaching. You might connect with one but not another. Don’t give up if you don’t love your first yoga session; instead, try a different instructor or a different style of yoga. 2. There is a type of yoga for everybody and every body. As you begin your yoga journey,

you will find yoga has different names. Vinyasa, Yin, Hatha, Ashtanga, and more. Most yoga, no matter what it’s called, is rooted in the same basic principles and poses. It’s best to try a variety to see what you most connect with.

3. Find a place to practice where you feel that

you can show up exactly as you are. You should be able to practice without judgement, without the feeling that you must do everything that the teacher is suggesting, a place that understands that your individual practice is just that—your individual practice.

4. Everything is a suggestion. It is so important to know that your practice is yours alone. There is no one who understands what you need, better than you do. Therefore, when

22 M Y S A N F O R D M A G A Z I N E | S P R I N G 2 0 2 2

taking a class, you should never feel obligated to do everything or anything at all. You should feel the freedom to honor your body.

5. Consistency matters. If you go to the gym

only once or twice, you likely will not reap the benefits in the same way that you would if you showed up consistently. Yoga is the same. That’s why we call it a practice. It’s consistency that will help you to achieve your goals.

6. Come as you are with what you have. I would suggest having a mat that is appropriate to the class you are taking. If you are taking a hot yoga class, you’re going to sweat. You would ideally want to use a mat that will not cause you to slip. In my opinion, a mat is the only requirement: everything else is optional. 7. Using props is not a bad thing. For some

reason people equate using props, such as a yoga block or strap, with your practice not being advanced. This is far from the truth. If you don’t have your own, it’s fine. Most studios have them available for you to use. I recommend that you experiment with props to see how their use has the ability to change the pose for your body.

9. Breathing. The first time you come to class, you will try to follow the instructor’s posture cues. By far the most important is connecting with your breathing, which is the heart of yoga. The physical movement of a class has its purpose. However, you are not reaping the benefits of the practice if you are not breathing correctly. The steady flow of the breath is what ignites transformation physically, mentally, and emotionally. The breathing is what moves the stagnant energy out. It anchors you to your practice. It creates steadiness in the mind and therefore steadiness in the postures. It helps you to focus, it improves circulation, and helps to relieve stress. When you can find the rhythm in your breathing, everything else begins to fall into place. This list is not exhaustive. If you are interested in a yoga class, do your research, see what resonates, try different classes, see what connects. I’m confident that you can find something that suits you. Remember, you don’t have to show up to a class. Taking five minutes, seated in silence connecting with your inhale and your exhale, is also yoga. Be sure to consult your doctor before beginning any new wellness routine. n

8. It’s not a competition. Yoga is not a com-

petition, and your yoga probably won’t look like the person who is practicing beside you. Everyone is at a different stage of practice and everyone’s body is different in strength, flexibility, bone structure and more. Your practice will look different, and that’s perfectly okay. Ultimately though, your practice is completely individual.

Carolin is a 700+ hour trained yoga instructor, teaching primarily Vinyasa Yoga. She currently leads classes for her employer's corporate wellness program teaching to employees across the globe.
