Well they know family and prayer and suffering and submitting and counseling the childlike. Does this not amply qualify them to engage in spiritual warfare, evangelism, intercession, helps, prophecy and teaching? Think of Deborah, Huldah, Anna, Priscilla, daughters of Philip and Phebe.

But then comes that irksome piece of censure in 1 Corinthians 14: 31-35? What do you make of it in light of the entirety of scripture?

We can much too easily hear those verses as saying “Women DO SHUT UP at church.�

Oh and one more thought. Do you sense that we are racing toward/already in the last days? Does not this increase the urgency of Gospel service and testimony and sound teaching? With all hands on deck to the highways and by-ways.

For a phone call

And there were no prophets around

Holy ground.

(Note: Oh how I desire to see this kind of attachment manifested in believers! Although I cannot get inside zealous hearts, I do suspect that there is too much running to middle-men and middle-women; to measures and means of grace. The “touch” is a personal milestone so powerful as to birth love slaves of the King. Holiness is not duty. It is thankful love.)

Aunt Betty was married to my Grandmother’s Brother Bill. In earlier years he had been a railroad engineer in Sarnia plying the line over into

Michigan. Betty kept herself busy managing a Variety Store. They shared their apartment with my Great- grandmother Elizabeth Watson.

There was a time when the two women held it together with an alcoholic bread-winner. The day did come when Uncle Bill was healed (by Grace and loving support).

That’s when young Doug got to see the picture. Two seniors in retirement and enjoying themselves entirely. Thankful with a capital “T”.

Uncle Bill had a large smile, a broad girth and a booming voice. He would always make a big fuss about my parents’ little dachshund “Otto”. The little pet would always give a happy welcome. Bill and Betty would visit on their

way through to the racetrack or perhaps going South for a couple of weeks in Florida in their compact Austin vehicle.

Aunt Betty would probably remind one of Aunt Bea from the Andy Griffith Show on television. Always smiling, bearing gifts for children, baking.

Even after she was widowed Betty would make the trip occasionally from Sarnia to London. I can still recall the sight of that dear little senior with trip bag in hand hopping off at the Greyhound Bus Station on a dreary autumn day, waving and smiling. Courage and character.

I know nothing about Betty’s position in faith. Old Mother-in-law Elizabeth would have been a great help. I got to see Elizabeth a few times in Sarnia before she passed. The oldest woman I can remember, (excepting now my own mother Bev who will turn 94 in May)​. Sitting in front of the television and watching her beloved Detroit Tigers baseball team, calling out to her favourites. Still taking a chance at bingo halls.

Smiling at this little pre-teen lad Doug. Often the “Good Lord” was a term issuing from her lips, and it registered with me (as it had with my Dad).

​“One of these days I’m gonna sit down and talk with

the three of them.”
