Spring Library Event Guide

Greetings!

1014 Charles St. Weatherford, TX 76086 817-598-4150 www.wpltx.com LIBRARY HOURS: Monday -Thursday 10:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m.

The days are getting longer and June is getting closer, but the library still has a lot in store for you before summer starts. Come learn about genealogy, homeschooling, gardening, decoupage, yoga, and much more with us over the next few months! Or, who knows, maybe even check out a book or two… While we’re on the topic of checking out books, I’d like to bring your attention to a really neat little Internet browser extension that was brought to my attention by one of our fantastic library staff members. It’s called Library Extension, and it adds information about local library holdings when you search for books through online bookseller websites. It’s available for Chrome and Firefox browsers at http://libraryextension.com. When you download the extension, it puts a tiny icon of a stack of books at the top right corner of your browser window. You then click on that icon to add your chosen libraries. For Weatherford Public Library, both the library’s catalog and the Overdrive eBook and eAudio collections are available to add.

Friday & Saturday 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. Sunday 2:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. Library Closed: Sunday, April 12th In This Issue: Programs for Children....…......3-5 Spring Books for Children...........3 Spring Break Programs................5 New Youth Books.........................6 New Teen Books............................7 Programs for Teens.......................8 Homeschool Programs.................9 Programs for Adults........…..10-13 New Adult Books...................14-15 Book Reviews...………................16 March Calendar...........…......…..17 April Calendar…....................….18 May Calendar...............................19 2

Once you complete those steps, all you have to do is search bookseller sites as you normally would. In the top right corner of the screen, you will be able to see if the book is available for checkout through your selected libraries, and if it is, you will even be able to link to the library’s catalog to request or borrow the material. Of course, WPL librarians are always available to help you get this set up if you get stuck.

Before I go, I’d like to call your attention to our new BYO Book Club on the last Monday of each month at Northside Remedy on Main Street. There’s no assigned reading, so cut loose and discuss whatever books interest you. Hope to see you there!

Chris Accardo, Director of Library Services

Birdies in a Nest Supplies: A paper plate Blue Tissue paper (or the color of your choice for your birdies) Brown and tan pipe cleaners (2 -3 of each) Six Small googly eyes Three small pieces of orange construction paper for the beaks Parents, you will need to do the following cutting to prepare the craft for younger children: Cut the paper plate in half. One half will be the nest and you will use the other half to cut out three egg shapes to make the birds. Cut the brown and tan pipe cleaners in twoinch pieces. Your child can tear up the tissue paper and then glue the egg shapes to the paper plate and the tissue, googly eyes, and orange construction paper for the beaks to those shapes. Children can then glue the pipe cleaner pieces below the egg-shaped birds to make the nest.

Create a Spring Flower Garden Supplies: Six to nine cupcake liners in various colors Three plastic buttons in colors of your choice Three popsicle sticks Three green pipe cleaners One sheet of construction paper Parents, you will need to cut each pipe cleaner in half. Your children can then glue three of the cupcake liners to the construction paper in a row to start the flowers and then stack and glue in additional liners to give the flowers layers. Your child can glue the buttons in the middle of the stacked liners and then glue the popsicle sticks underneath the cupcake liners to make the stems. Help your child fold the pipe cleaners into leaf shapes to glue beside the popsicle stems, and then you have a beautiful flower garden for spring!

Evening Book Club 3rd Thursday of the Month | 6 - 7:30 p.m. (complimentary copies of the books are available, while supplies last, at the book club meetings) March 19th: Joining the ranks of Hidden Figures and In the Garden of Beasts, the incredible true story of the greatest codebreaking duo that ever lived, an American woman and her husband who invented the modern science of cryptology together and used it to confront the evils of their time, solving puzzles that unmasked Nazi spies and helped win World War II. April 16th: August Pullman was born with a facial difference that, up until now, has prevented him from going to a mainstream school. Starting 5th grade at Beecher Prep, he wants nothing more than to be treated as an ordinary kid— but his new classmates can’t get past Auggie’s extraordinary face. May 21st: Christopher John Francis Boone knows all the countries of the world and their capitals and every prime number up to 7,057. He relates well to animals but has no understanding of human emotions. He cannot stand to be touched. And he detests the color yellow. Catch and Kill: Lies, Spies, and a Conspiracy to Protect Predators by Ronan Farrow

4

This book is a fascinating recounting of Ronan Farrow’s investigation of sexual predators in positions of power, particularly in the entertainment and news industries. Farrow covers the Harvey Weinstein scandal in depth, as you would expect, but also deftly untangles the many cover-ups perpetuated by news media and entertainment executives and powerful attorneys which enabled Weinstein and those like him to continue their abuse with impunity. The author’s style is very accessible and fast-paced, which has the effect of making the book read like a spy thriller (and the book does expose actual spies employed by the abusers). It is easy to imagine that many people would find the expense and effort put in to keep these allegations of extensive wrongdoing buried unbelievable, but Farrow’s investigative results have been duplicated by others, including Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey in their recent book She Said: Breaking the Sexual Harassment Story That Helped Ignite a Movement (also available at this library). Perfect for those who appreciate a compelling and thoroughly researched look at current events. - Reviewed by Amy 5

Ask Again, Yes by Mary Beth Keane

The lives of Francis Gleeson and Brian Stanhope, two rookie New York City cops, are forever intertwined once their families become neighbors in a small suburb outside of the city. As a friendship between the youngest Gleeson child, Kate, and young Peter Stanhope blossoms, an explosive event occurs that will change the course of the lives of everyone involved. The novel looks at each character with a sense of empathy and understanding through their experiences of mental illness, addiction, and trauma. It follows the characters from the 70s all the way through the current day, exploring how our past and our families can shape who we become. Mary Beth Keane weaves together a beautiful story that shows how forgiveness and redemption are possible even in the darkest of circumstances. Ask Again, Yes was my favorite novel of 2019. This is a beautifully written family drama that touched my heart. The characters were complex and interesting, and I was amazed how the author tried to realistically show how complicated yet beautiful family and romantic relationships can be. She also treated the issue of mental illness with an impressive sensitivity. Great for fans of Celeste Ng and Katherine Center, this is a book that I would never call a romance, but it is certainly about love. - Reviewed by Alexis

Underground: A Human History of the Worlds Beneath Our Feet by Will Hunt

4 Underground is a beautifully written journal documenting the author’s exploration of underground spaces all over the world, including caves, mines, catacombs, and subways. Hunt became enthralled by these spaces after discovering an abandoned railway tunnel in his youth, and eventually graduated to prowling New York City’s subway system, the Parisian catacombs, as well as caves and mines in South America and Australia. Along the way, Hunt provides cultural context for the existence and use of the spaces using mythology and anthropology as well as both the historical and contemporary accounts of those who originally created or currently use these often-unseen locations. Black and white photographs of many of the locations add immensely to the mystery of Hunt’s prose. An excellent book for those who wish to learn about the world’s hidden places. - Reviewed by Amy 16
