As we roll into another summer, we likely find this one significantly different from any of the previous ones. We are facing challenges the likes of which haven’t been seen in generations. I want to let you know that your public library will continue to offer services to the best of our ability through these trying times. We are working to expand our online services and collections, and will still be offering fantastic events that you will find detailed in this Event Guide along with the youth and teen Summer Reading Challenges and the adult Summer Library Challenge. In addition, many companies that provide content and services for libraries have made their offerings available at no cost well into the summer. For a list of our existing and new online offerings, you can go to our website at www.wpltx.com and click on the link for #WeatherfordStrong Resources. Our librarians will be happy to assist you with information requests at 817.598.4155 or libinfo@weatherfordtx.gov. You can also follow Weatherford Public Library on Facebook for the most current information and updates. Please stay safe out there!
Chris Accardo, Director of Library Services
To ensure the health and safety of all our residents and employees, in-person events have been suspended at the library. We will continue to offer storytime and other library events virtually on Facebook Live or via other virtual platforms for all ages throughout the summer. Please note the details for each event to find out more information on how to participate virtually so you can still enjoy the great events and programming the library has always offered.

Weatherford Public Library Summer Reading Challenge 2020 June 1st - August 16th

At WPL, we use Beanstack to manage the Summer Reading Challenge programs. This online summer reading management program is a free service that will help you track and manage participation in the library’s Summer Reading Challenge Reading Rewards Program for kids and teens and the Adult Summer Library Challenge. You can set up as many profiles within your account as needed, so it is easy to track participation for the whole family. If you used Beanstack with us a previous summer, a new account is not needed, as you can continue to use the account that you have already. Your password can be reset if you have forgotten it; please do not create an additional account. Let us know if you need assistance. If you are new to Beanstack, setting up your account takes just a couple simple steps and doesn’t require that you download anything, as it is browser-based. An optional mobile app is available if you choose to download and use it as well. If you do not have access to a computer, tablet, smartphone, or other internet connected device at home, the library’s computers can be used to participate. Need help? Visit us at the library and we will be happy to assist you with setting up your account and showing you how to use it. 1. Go to weatherfordtx.beanstack.org. 2. Look for your age group and click register. 3. Enter the required information and you’ll be all set with your account (a library card is not required to sign up with Beanstack). Information on Beanstack’s privacy policies can be found at: https://www.beanstack.com/privacy/. In addition to tracking your progress in the library’s summer challenges, Beanstack will alert you when you have earned a prize to be picked up at the library and will track your entries into any prize drawings for the summer reading programs. At the conclusion of the summer reading programs, Beanstack will conduct random drawings to select our winners from all entries received. The prize drawings are sponsored by the Friends of the Weatherford Public Library (a 501(c)3 corporation), 1014 Charles Street, Weatherford, TX 76086. Drawings are to be held the week of August 17th through 21st, 2020. Parental Notice: Beanstack requires personal information. If you choose to use Beanstack, you can apply Beanstack’s privacy policy addressing children’s privacy at any time. This allows parents to request that all of their child’s data be deleted from Beanstack’s database by sending an email message to contact@beanstack.com with “Request for Child Information Removal” as the subject, and the name and age of the child in the body of the message. There are numerous paid and free parental monitoring apps available should you wish to keep tabs on when your children are accessing the Beanstack website or should you wish to block access altogether. Additionally, if you are not comfortable sharing your children’s information, you may also 12 opt out and use a paper log to participate in the program.
Summer Reading Challenge Reading Rewards Program •Do you have a child aged from birth to 11 or a teen aged from 12 to 18 (and still in school)? •Are you a youth or a teen yourself? •Did you join our Summer Reading Challenge through Beanstack and can’t wait to earn prizes? You’re in the right place! The Reading Rewards Program works in the same way for all youth aged from birth to 18 years. It’s all about counting the minutes you spend reading. Each minute you read is worth one point and it doesn’t matter what you like to read – books, magazines, comics and audiobooks all count toward your goals. Also, reading aloud counts, so if you are a parent reading to a baby, toddler, or preschooler, they can earn prizes. If you are a kid or teen who likes to read aloud with younger siblings and family members, it counts for both of you. You can track your reading using Beanstack which will give you information about your prizes as you earn them. If you don’t have access to a computer or device that connects to the Internet or you prefer to track your reading on paper, you can use the reading log we have included on the next two pages and we will help you enter the information into our Beanstack website when you visit the library. Prizes are earned once you have read 5 hours, 10 hours, 15 hours, and 20 hours. You’ll have plenty of time to work on reaching all these goals – the Reading Rewards Program lasts from June 1st until August 16th. If you keep reading, you might become one of our Mega Readers. If you read 25 hours or more, you will earn a ticket to our Mega Reader Drawing for every 5 hours of reading done starting at 25 hours. If you can keep reading, you can keep earning tickets. You do need to get them all in by August the 16th, however, as the Mega Reader Drawings will be held the week of August 17th - 21st. There are three separate Mega Reader Drawings: one for ages 0-3 with special prizes selected for our youngest readers, one for ages 4-11, and another for teens – and each drawing will have three winners. The prize packets will be the same for each drawing, but different depending on the age group, so that kids and teens can have prizes tailored to their interests. We have also set up activities as part of the online Reading Rewards Program that challenge you to do something different and earn points! The activity points you earn will be combined with your reading points to earn badges. Whether you plan to earn rewards through reading only, or a combination of reading and activities, get ready to imagine your way through 13 the best summer ever!

FOR ADULTS
3rd Thursday of the Month | 6 - 7:30 p.m.
Adults of all ages are welcome to join us virtually to discuss the book of the month. Copies of the selected book for each month can be reserved by contacting Rachel at rreeves@weatherfordtx.gov while supplies last. Please contact Rachel for more information on how to access the virtual meeting. June 18th: Educated: A Memoir by Tara Westover Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University. Only then would she wonder if she’d traveled too far, if there was still a way home. July 16th: The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah Alaska, 1974. Ernt Allbright came home from the Vietnam War a changed and volatile man. When he loses yet another job, he makes the impulsive decision to move his wife and daughter north where they will live off the grid in America’s last true frontier. Cora will do anything for the man she loves, even if means following him into the unknown. Thirteen-year-old Leni, caught in the riptide of her parents’ passionate, stormy relationship, has little choice but to go along, daring to hope this new land promises her family a better future. In a wild, remote corner of Alaska, the Allbrights find a fiercely independent community of strong men and even stronger women. The long, sunlit days and the generosity of the locals make up for the newcomers’ lack of preparation and dwindling resources. But as winter approaches and darkness descends, Ernt’s fragile mental state deteriorates. Soon the perils outside pale in comparison to threats from within. In their small cabin, covered in snow, blanketed in eighteen hours of night, Leni and her mother learn the terrible truth: they are on their own. August 20th: Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Strout At times stern, at other times patient, at times perceptive, at other times in sad denial, Olive Kitteridge, a retired schoolteacher, deplores the changes in her little town of Crosby, Maine, and in the world at large, but she doesn’t always recognize the changes in those around her: a lounge musician haunted by a past romance; a former student who has lost the will to live; Olive’s own adult child, who feels tyrannized by her irrational sensitivities; and her husband, Henry, who finds his loyalty to his marriage both a blessing and a curse. As the townspeople grapple with their problems, mild and dire, Olive is brought to a deeper understanding of herself and her life—sometimes painfully, but always with ruthless honesty. Olive Kitteridge offers profound insights into the human condition—its conflicts, its tragedies and joys, and the endurance it requires. 17

Watcher in the Woods by Kelley Armstrong
The fourth installment of the Rockton series by Kelley Armstrong follows Casey Duncan, a homicide detective in a small, isolated town set in the vast wilderness of the Yukon territory in Canada. Armstrong provides readers with her signature fast-paced thriller with shocking plot twists and turns. Rockton is a town, that to the world, doesn’t exist and is filled with citizens that have backgrounds worth escaping from. It is a place for those who need to run from their past, like Casey Duncan who escaped her dark history by becoming the town’s new homicide detective. Leaving off from the third book in the series, Casey is desperate to find help and turns to her estranged sister. Situations become further complicated when a US Marshal comes to the secret town demanding information on its citizens. The secrets of Rockton are plentiful and keeping a town with a group of potentially dangerous citizens running is more than enough work to keep detective Casey on alert. The Watcher in the Woods is a mystery thriller that will enthrall readers with the town of Rockton. This installment is riveting and may work as a standalone, but it is highly recommended to start with the first book The City of the Lost as the fourth book leaves off immediately after the cliffhanger of the third book. - Reviewed by Dalila Cool Beans by Joe Yonan

Cool Beans is one of the few cookbooks I’ve come across that is devoted solely to bean cookery. The author takes a global approach in his recipe choices—the book includes 125 recipes, including Ethiopian, Ecuadorian, and Armenian specialties as well as the more familiar American, Mexican, and Indian dishes. The recipes as written are vegetarian, although carnivores could easily add the meat protein of their choice to almost any of the soups, casseroles, or sandwiches. Some of the ingredients called for may be a bit of a challenge to source in local grocery stores, but substitutions will be easy to make, and many of the items called for can be obtained online. The book could’ve definitely used more photos—as the old saying goes, “You eat with your eyes first,” but the variety of the recipes offsets this lack. Cool Beans is a good choice for cooks interested in finding inspiration to widen their bean dish repertoire. - Reviewed by Amy See You on Sunday by Sam Sifton

See You on Sunday is a cookbook that mostly concentrates on dishes that can feed a crowd, be it a family or a gathering of friends. However, the book is also useful in that it provides basic recipes for popular dishes that can easily be customized to the cook’s taste—and of course, when not cooking for a crowd, these recipes can be scaled down for fewer servings or made as is in order to provide leftovers for later meals. The author, who is the food editor of The New York Times, is known for encouraging playfulness and spontaneity when cooking; therefore, few exotic ingredients are included in the recipes and substitutions are easy to make. While this volume also suffers from a lack of photos, the book would make an excellent reference for a new cook with mostly traditional tastes. - Reviewed by Amy 24
