5. RED SEAL CERTIFICATION OPTION
BLANCHE MACDONALD CENTRE, FULL DESIGNATION APPROVED
Blanche Macdonald Centre has Full Designation status with SkilledTradesBC.
Blanche Macdonald Hair students have a choice of selecting a Red Seal Hair program or a non-Red Seal Hair program.
Students successfully completing select entry dates of the Blanche Macdonald Professional Hairstyling Program will have achieved the training to meet the SkilledTradesBC Hairstylist Level 1 technical training requirements toward Red Seal.
If a passing grade on the SkilledTradesBC examination is achieved, the candidate will receive the SkilledTradesBC Certificate of Completion (Hairstylist Foundation Program) and once apprenticed, 1290 hours toward their work-based hours requirement for Red Seal. Subsequent training (Level 2 and on-the job training) will enable the candidate to continue on the Apprenticeship Pathway and upon successful completion of the examinations, achieve the SkilledTradesBC Certificate of Qualification (CofQ) with Red Seal Endorsement.
While British Columbia does not have a training hour requirement for Hair, many other provinces do.
For example, Alberta and Ontario require Hairstylists and Barbers to have provincial qualifications to legally work in these provinces.
By having your hair training hours recognized as part of the Red Seal Designation, this will give you the freedom and mobility to work anywhere in Canada.
IMPORTANT
For those students who are applying for the Pro Hair Program and are from other countries or are planning to work in other countries, please check with these regional or national authorities to see whether our Hair training hours will be recognized and transferred.
Blanche Macdonald Centre is not responsible for whether our learning and training credits are transferred or recognized in other countries.

The Pro Hair Program touched base on a lot of things. Since then I’ve met stylists who studied at other schools and I realized how much more you learn at Blanche Macdonald. For example, I can do so many different types of hair extensions.
I learned that at Blanche Macdonald. I didn’t have to take an extra course. I was really happy with what I’d learned once I finished Hair School. I was ready to move on and watch myself succeed.”

If hair wasn’t attached to humans I wouldn’t do this. I love working with people.
I always look at my clients’ eyes in the mirror when I’m working. I’m looking for their personality and what they’re looking for—gauging the haircut to suit them, both with their face shape and their individuality.
Technical theory is so important but after time you start to understand the concept of cutting for a person.”

It prepared me so well! Having the work experience especially aided me in knowing what to expect going to a salon environment.
All of the in-class teaching and info was so broken down and understandable, that I felt prepared when I was ready to go into the field as a professional. It’s a really full year and it’s so intensive and very detailed...To me, it was university for hair school.”
Nessa Pineda , Blanche Macdonald Pro Hair GraduateBlanche Macdonald Graduate Erin Klassen has carved out an impressive career working in TV, Film, Fashion and Editorial.
As a union member of IATSE Local 891, representing TV and Film shoots in BC and repped by the coolest artist agency around, NOBASURA, Erin has filled up her portfolio working with notable names like Lana Condor, Camila Mendes, Dove Cameron, Lily Rabe, and brands such as Aritzia, lululemon and Hypebae Beauty.
It’s so easy to go into hair school with an idea of what you want to do, but school is where you really figure out your passion for when you’re finished.
Try literally everything you can while you’re there with amazing teachers that can tell you everything.
I’m a firm believer in picking something you love and aiming to be as good as humanly possible at it. When I work, I want to feel like I’m the absolute best I can be.”

Admissions Information
Making the decision to pursue a new career can be confusing and challenging. To ease the process and to assist you in researching your educational options, your first step is to connect with an Admissions Director. Please give yourself the time to speak with a college Director to thoroughly discuss and review your career options, and to allow us to help you with the admissions process and financial aid options.
Admission Requirements
• Applicants must have completed grade 11 or be 19 years of age or older at the start of the student’s program of study.
• Proof of English skills is required for ESL applicants: Blanche Macdonald Centre English Assessment 21+/30, IELTS 5.5+, TOEFL iBT 55+.
• If English is your primary language or you have completed a minimum of 2 years of English study, you are not required to submit proof of your English proficiency.
Admission Procedures
Students who are Canadian Citizens or have Landed Immigrant Status:
• Personal interviews are arranged with Admissions Directors to assess the applicant’s aptitude and suitability in this field, your degree of commitment to your studies, financial capability and preparedness, and your experience or knowledge of the industry. Interviews can be conducted in person, by phone or Skype.
• Please complete the online Student Application/Personal Information Form.
• Please indicate on your Application whether you require a Canada Student Loan. Please note that students applying for Student Loan funding must apply well in advance of their start date.
• Once you have been accepted into the program, it is essential that you register as early as possible. To ensure small class sizes and a high teacher-student ratio, it is necessary for the college to limit enrollment. If you wish to have a preferred program starting date, or if you are applying for Student Loan funding, advance registration is strongly advised. The Blanche Macdonald Centre has limited registration.
International Students
• If English is your primary language, then you are not required to submit proof of your English proficiency.
• If English is not your primary language but you have successfully completed a minimum of two years of full-time English study, then you are not required to submit proof of your English proficiency.
• If you do not meet the above criteria, then you are required to submit proof of English proficiency. To ensure that you are able to handle your studies in English, the College accepts TOEFL and IELTS results. If students prefer, the College also has an internal English Proficiency test available on site.
• Once you have met all the admission and financial requirements and you are accepted into the College, a letter of acceptance will be issued. It is the sole responsibility of the student to arrange for any necessary student visas or extensions.
• For International students who are interested in our International Work / Study Programs, there are Co-op Programs available. The Professional Hairstyling Co-op Program is two years long. You will attend one year of classroom study and one year of co-operative placement (work experience). You will then return to the College at the end of the two years for a final assessment.
The Blanche Macdonald Centre holds a designation certificate issued by the Private Training Institutions Branch (PTIB) of British Columbia, holds an Education Quality Assurance (EQA) designation and is a designated learning institution with Citizenship & Immigration Canada (CIC).
The college reserves the right to refuse admission to any applicant who does not meet each of these admission requirements. At the Blanche Macdonald Centre, it is important to us that you are committed to your studies, well suited to this industry, and able to handle the academic, financial and personal demands of the program. We are here to help address any of your concerns and to help you and your family as best as we can with the admissions process.
