Redefining Jewellery Aesthetics By Breaking Down Gender Specific Designs Chippd Tooth is a Vancouver born Jewellery brand made affordable to highschool and college students alike. Chippd Tooth was created in Burnaby in January 2020 with its early design ideas and had their official first launch in September of that year. The brand is still a small and upcoming accessory brand but the ceiling for their success is as high as they like to set it, as their first four collections sold out within just minutes. The demand and hype towards some of their pieces are growing by the day. As they are an up and coming brand, they focus on trendsetting and popular staple pieces such as bracelets, earrings and chains for both guys and girls. Chippd Tooth was created by creative couple Kyle Yuman and Ricci Pamintuan. Ricci is a content creator, making Youtube videos with her best friend on their channel TOTHE9’S (to-the-nines) where they create lifestyle vlogs, lookbooks and discuss all things fashion. Their channel has grown exponentially with over 620k subscribers. Ricci also has a large following of 134k followers on Instagram. Kyle is a musician who goes by the name of “Not Klyde” creating a special mix of hip hop and gospel music. The couple’s array of creative talents have brought them to the creation of their small business which has already proven to be extremely successful thus far. When asked about their goals and visions for the couple’s brand, Kyle explains that Ricci and him are trying to make it more of

a norm for guys to start rocking jewellery and accessories through crafting pieces that are unisex. Ricci explains how “The fashion industry right now is continually changing, where we once say men wear chains all the time in the 90’s and early 2000’s, we are seeing less and less of that everyday.” This is something Kyle and Ricci strive to change. The couple pulls inspiration from some of the most influential 90’s—10’s iconography, like Justin Bieber and garment pieces from Fear Of God. They want to create jewellery that can compliment that style of fashion. As seen on their Instagram, Chippd Tooth promoted a pearl necklace *dropping later this month*. Kyle explains that he wants to change the social norm of what men and women can wear. He believes that creating this piece can play a small role in changing the perception of pearl necklaces being seen as more feminine. After following this brand and its successes over the past year, they continue to amaze and shock their followers with outstanding, bold, and creative jewellery. This creative duo continues to prove they belong in the cresative jewellery’s saturated market—and the sales are sure to prove any doubters wrong! As you spot more influencers rock the brand, Kyle and Ricci’s ultimate vision of creating great unisex jewellery (with a male dominant twist), is unraveling before their eyes.

Why Tik Tok Is Taking Over The Fashion Industry

Tik Tok has taken over the world. For anyone who doesn’t know, it’s a social media app that allows you to create 15 to 60-second videos to post for anyone to view. Tik Tok is available worldwide to any Android or Apple user creating an app that allows anyone to connect with each other, no matter nationality, gender or race. As of 2020, it had 800 Million monthly users moving its way to the top downloaded in the app store. This has allowed content creators to access a more diverse way to appeal to their audience with the abundance of different videos published per day. On average users spend 52 minutes daily on

10

Tik Tok and have access to over 1 Billion videos. Each user has a For You Page (FYP) that has different types of videos depending on their interaction and interests with their past viewed Tik Toks. This has created an app that appeals to almost everyone with videos that vary from Life Hacks to Dances. The world is moving at such a fast pace, raising the younger generations with shorter attention spans and not being able to focus on one thing for long. This makes it difficult to engage

anyone for long periods of time, so having content that is short and sweet is the perfect way to grab someone’s interest. The 15-60 second videos grab the viewer’s attention and then bring them down a rabbit hole of your content. They act as “teasers” to what you’re trying to share. Today, most millennials and GenZ’s have taken a huge interest in style and how to create their own. They strive for confidence and find ways of setting themselves apart from others, making fashion a huge focus. They are constantly told to be

themselves and to dress how they views and reaching more and want to dress, so being able to grab more FYP’s. Aside from only inspiration from content small businesses, Tik Tok creators is a perfect has created a place way of creating a for free advertising Zara fans have personal style. where any type of expressed increased This also video showing interest in their jeans allows brands off clothing or as Tik Tok shines a light to promote accessories on the production of their clothing that catches the whether extra long jeans for all viewers’ eyes will creators are the tall girls out there... lead them to the being sponsored comments. Another brand that has definitely gained a large customer base is Amazon’s fashion section. Everyone is always looking for a cheaper way to stay on-trend and what’s better than Amazon’s prices and shipping speeds. Amazon gives you access to anything from trendy accessories to statement pieces such as their patchworked jeans. Tik Tok has consumed the majority of the population let alone the Fashion industry. Being able to promote anything any way you want to, gives anyone freedom and allows creativity. There is nothing more appealing to users than they are given the opportunity to post whatever they want and have others react with it in a positive manner. So next time you need some fashion inspiration, be sure to take a quick scroll through your FYP.

In addition, oats are extremely cheap, especially in comparison to avocado toast (I know you spend $10 on avocado toast).

Oats are also a good source of antioxidants, nutrients and fibre. Need more convincing? Take a look at the delicious recipes below and tell me you don’t want to eat oats. Before we get into the recipes, let me explain how I cook my oats. I mix 3/4 or ½ cup quick oats (depending on how hungry I am) with enough water to just cover the oats. Then I

Blueberry Cardamom Oatmeal

By Raemi Borrisoff

Seven elevated oatmeal recipes for every day of the week For some people, the word oatmeal might as well be a synonym for boring, but those people are wrong. While, yes, plain oatmeal is a bland meal, there are so many ways to spice it up and get you excited about your breakfast.

2

Carrot Cake Oatmeal

sprinkle with salt and cook in the microwave for two minutes. After, I add almond milk and all the flavourings that I want that day. Optionally I will add flaxseeds, hemp hearts, protein powder or powdered peanut butter for extra heartiness. Then cook the oats again for 90 seconds, finish with any toppings and BAM—a mouthwatering breakfast.

Chocolate Peanut Butter Oatmeal I know you love this flavour combo, but have you ever tried it in your oatmeal? It’s basically Reese’s for breakfast! Top your oats with peanut butter and melty chocolate chips (or Reese’s Pieces if you’d like). For a boost of protein, add powdered peanut butter to your oats before cooking.

5 6 7

Cake for breakfast? Yes, please. This is my go-to when I want some veggies in the morning, but don’t fear, you can’t taste them too much. Rather, the flavour is created through spices (cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, allspice, cloves, or whatever you have in your cupboard), maple syrup and a touch of peanut butter.

The perfect option for when you want the taste of pancakes, but not the hassle or mess of making them. This recipe uses maple syrup and cinnamon to create the nostalgic flavour of your childhood. Top with your favourite pancake toppings, such as fruit or chocolate and feel like a kid again!

If you’re unfamiliar with the spice that is cardamom, you’re in for a treat with this one! Typically used in middle eastern desserts, this spice is made from various plants in the ginger family and has a strong, sweet, pungent flavour, with hints of lemon and mint. It pairs beautifully with rose water, blueberries and pistachios, which make up this oatmeal recipe. If you drizzle honey on top, I won’t judge. Honey and pistachios are one of the best flavour combos, just ask baklava!

Banana Nut Oatmeal The muffin flavour transformed into oatmeal! Mash half a banana into the oats with maple syrup and vanilla extract, too. Chop the rest of the banana for when the oats finish cooking. Add toasted pecans or walnuts and peanut butter. For extra deliciousness, caramelize the banana by cooking it in maple syrup on the stove (yes, it’s as good as it sounds!)

Pumpkin Oatmeal A flavour perfect for any time of the year (not just fall.) I’m looking at you, Starbucks. Not only is pumpkin delicious, but it makes the oats super creamy. Mix pumpkin puree, maple syrup and pumpkin spice into your oats before cooking and top with nuts, brown sugar, chocolate chips or nut butter if you would like.

Overnight Oats If you’re really short on time in the morning, this one’s for you. As the name suggests, this recipe “cooks” overnight and leaves you with a yummy bowl of oats ready to eat when you wake up. Simply combine the oats with your milk of choice, preferred toppings and flavourings and let it get to work while you sleep. (Anything that cooks itself, gets a yes from me!) To create a pudding-like texture, add chia seeds to the mixture. While you can choose whatever flavour you’d like for your overnight oats, I went with vanilla matcha and topped it with raspberries and raspberry syrup. 15

Off The Couch

To Working Out By Chris Truong

At-home ways to help you rid of that COVID Pouch It has been a year since our initial “two week quarantine” went into effect and you are anything like myself, you’re probably missing the gym a little–or at least missing a good way to stay in shape unless you’ve got some money to blow on a private or personal trainer. Summer is just around the corner and it’s time to get off the couch and start kicking ourselves back into shape. No gym? No problem. Here are some ways I’ve been able to kick restart my fitness grind and how I

Workout with a friend (virtually) Right off the bat, this sounds silly and when I was first suggested this idea, I felt the same way too. Try doing a few stationary workouts with your friend via zoom or facetime and it can be either low or high impact workouts such as doing sit ups, burpees, crunches and even running on the spot. The benefit of doing this with a friend while on facetime, is that it helps with motivation and accountability, this can also help to provide you with a little friendly competition. See who can do more pushups or hold a plank the longest.

16

plan on getting into shape for this summer. Listen, I get it. it’s hard to have the motivation to start working out or to work out efficiently when you’re not in a gym. You are not surrounded by like minded individuals who are working towards the same goal as you. The compromise I’ve made over the past few months that has helped me get into shape will hopefully kickstart some motivation for you to want to get out and get to work.

Get into a workout program (virtual trainers) There are a handful of us who would love the luxury of having our own personal trainer. Unfortunately for most of us, our pockets just aren’t that deep to even pay for a gym membership sometimes. However over the past few months, I’ve experienced and tried out a few apps that have personal trainers that give you daily workout routines and plans to help you meet a desired fitness goal. An app that I have been using is called, “Centr 6” created by Chris Hemsworth’s team of personal trainers, the app has an array of personal fitness trainers, but also offers meal plans and tips and tricks to help keep your mental fitness in check as well!

Low impact cardio

Calisthenics

When I used to hear the word cardio, I would get chills and do anything to get out of it. Cardio has left a sour taste in many of our mouths, making us think of ridiculous running drills we were forced to do in elementary school. But one of the best ways to keep your joints and muscles healthy is to do something called low impact cardio. No it does not involve cramps, gasping for air every few seconds or a gross amount of sweat. It’s as simple as going for a light or swift walk for an hour a day. Not only will this allow you to go outside and enjoy the weather (when it’s not raining) it can actually burn just as many calories as doing a 30 minute sprint on a treadmill. Plus I’m sure you won’t smell half as bad as if you were to run on the treadmill.

Last but not least, this one’s for those who not only want to get into shape and maintain good physical health, but are also looking to pack on a few pounds of muscle while doing so. No weights? No problem. Calisthenics is an exercise many athletes like to do as it’s easier on your muscles and joints—all it takes is your own body weight. Calisthenics is as simple as doing various forms of cardio, pushups and pullups. Finding different ways to do all of these exercises will help strengthen your back, bicep, triceps and chest. Another form of Calisthenics that many athletes enjoy is something called HIIT Training, “High Intensity Interval Training”. This requires you to do any exercise of your choice for a short period of time with less recovery periods. This is something that I do every morning to help me kickstart my day!

These are just a few methods I’ve used for the past few months to help me keep my physical health in check and I will continue to use these tips I’ve learned over the past few months to continue to shred off some extra pounds of fat and put on some more muscle. Of course, this is not a sure guide for anyone to get shredded or is it any means a

guarantee for you to lose your quarantine weight, but it’s the best thing to do is just to get started. You will soon find out what works for you and what doesn’t, but hopefully some of these tips that have helped me will also help you to kickstart your fitness goals again for the remainder of 2021!

famous Fictional Fashion 2010’s Top 5 Best Dressed Male Movie Characters By Aidan Brainard

4

Jay Gatsby from Great Gatsby Although the story is supposed to be a cynical look at the american dream, you can’t help but wish to be rich to look as good as Jay Gatsby. His various suits in blacks and soft whites give him amazing elegance everyday, just don’t question how he got his money.

3

Ransom Drysdale from Knives Out Colourful scarves and distressed wool sweaters give Ransom a playful take on very classic menswear pieces, perfect for the spoiled playboy son of the family. His signature cable knit sweater was so spectacular that it has caused similar sweaters to blast in popularity when the movie came out. Even LL Bean sold out of the staple knitwear. Not to mention how he makes even the most simple brown overcoat seem so modern, he easily steals the spotlight every time he’s on screen.

2

John Wick from John Wick

5 20

Keanu Reeves proved he looked amazing in all black with his role in The Matrix, and this role only proves that further. His sleek intimidating looks in the John Wick series make him look like the most suave assassin around. Not only does the all black suit you regularly see him wear help him look dressed for every situation he finds himself in, it helps hide all the blood he spills during the movie. What a badass.

1

Django from Django Unchained

Cliff Booth from Once Upon A Time In Hollywood

Django has a unique western style many would kill for, with it being much more colourful than the average western movie. Whether it’s his signature green western style jacket or his blue ensemble inspired by the painting “Boy In Blue”, Django is always amazingly dressed. Not to mention the red ensemble stolen from Calvin that signed the final kill had been made, Django will be our new western movie style icon.

Another Quintin Tarantino movie!? It’s hard not to just list every character in his films considering they all look amazing, though Cliff Booth stands out. With the resurgence of vintage fashion today, how can you not love his casual 70s style with his big belt buckle and blue jeans, he just effortlessly oozes cool. You also have to respect a character that rocks a canadian tuxedo so well. 21

4. Big Collars

1. Juicy Couture Tracksuits Now “That’s Hot”. One brand that can definitely make a comeback with the current sweatpants craze is Juicy Couture. These tracksuits looked extremely tacky back in the early 00s.

However, change the colour story to more earthy or pastel tones and give it a baggier fit and it could appeal to today’s market. I guarantee Paris Hilton will be on board with promoting this trend.

Go big or go home. Big collars, mainly peter pan collars, have somewhat made an appearance in stores and on the runway recently but I would like to see this trend really take off. On video calls, we’re only showing the upper half of

2. Leg Warmers

5. Dress Over Pants

This could be leg-endry. resorting to at-home workouts, why not recreate that iconic When you think of leg 80s aerobics look and find warmers, the first thing that comes to mind are those some fashionable leg warmers? cheesy 80s aerobic videos Hear me out, if you wore found brown coloured leg warmers with overly energetic women wearing bright neon leotards and paired them with black heel boots with a brown and black and sweatbands. With gyms being closed down and people plaid coat dress, you got a look.

The solution to wearing a dress in the winter. Initially, the idea one wearing a dress over pants seems weird and can easily look horrendous if not styled correctly. That’s the thing,

3. Hypercolour T-Shirts A tie-dye life hack. Back in the early 90s, the brand Hypercolor made t-shirts that changed colour when in contact with heat, essentially making it look “cool” to sweat. This was either a really smart idea or just strange altogether. As gross as 24

our bodies so why not wear a dramatic collar to stand out? The popular 70s spread collar could make a tasteful comeback or who knows, maybe the mid16th century ruff collar? Ok, that might be asking a bit much.

it may be, with tie-dye making a comeback, Hypercolor t-shirts can fit right in. Not to maintain there’s no need to buy dye or rubber bands, you can just live your life and create your own DIY tie-dye with no effort involved.

it all comes down to how you style it. Find the right dress and pair of pants and anybody could rock this late 90s look. Maybe brands could start selling matching dress and pant sets?

6. Low Rise Jeans An inch away from being too scandalous. We’re not talking about low riding pants where people would wear their pants down to their knees. No, we’re talking about jeans that just sit above or right on the hips. High-rise or high-

waisted jeans have been popular for a number of years now and at most stores, that’s all they sell. And oftentimes, they can feel restricting on the stomach. So I say it’s time to go back to the early 00’s styled denim and let our stomachs take a breather. 25

While the adventures of the Boy Who Lived ended some years ago, children and adults alike still find joy in the magical series, whether this be the relatable personalities, the excitement of magic, or the ability to escape from our boring muggle lives. Even though the series began before I was born, I, along with many others, have grown up with the characters, adapted as they did, and learned from their faults and triumphs.

How Downton Abbey’s Leading Lady Told Her Story Through Her Fashion By Holly Hamner

Every episode of Downton Abbey has moments of fashion greatness. The costume designers for the show always ensured the cast dressed beautifully, but they also researched to make sure the outfits were historically accurate. In season six we see the transition from the Edwardian era to the age of Jazz as women had new opportunities for work. Yes, everyone in the show always looked amazing, but Lady Mary Crawley’s style stood out amongst the rest of her family. Some of her best moments include some of fashion greats: Channel, Vionnet, Lanvin, and others. Here are only 5 of some of the best fashion moments for Mary throughout the show.

During the final season Lady Mary has many costume repeats. This adds a bit of continuity and realism to the show. One of the looks is this beautiful navy blue furtrimmed coat. To be fully transparant, I am a true victim to the Sephora trap. A note to all of our wonderful animal-loving queens—Each product reviewed is cruelty free. We’ve done the research for you and are proud to support humane practices.

Remember to start with a fresh face and don’t forget to moisturize! Pro tip: Using a gentle plant based cleanser will allow you skin’s natural oils to fight off polutants. On the other hand, my all time fav Vanish Airbrush Concealer is light as air and blends beautifully with any foundation. Thank you Hourglass.

3. Setting Powder

1. Primer While your skin type will determine which foundation base is more suitable, matte primers seem to be the fan fav. The e.l.f. cosmetics Poreless Putty Primer was a dream to apply! The primer comes in a jar with a generous amount of product. I recommend using a mini makeup spatula to scoop out the product to avoid bacteria build up. The application starts off cool and creamy, then settles into a velvety matte finish. The Fenty Beauty True Matte Primer has a similar application and feel but a stronger matte finish. It is packaged in a glass tube 38

with an extra convenient pump applicator. As for the results, they both diffuse fine lines and pores equally, however the FB primer has stronger oil-control ingredients. If oil is not your main concern, the e.l.f. primer will do just fine.

2. Foundation & Concealer This is where to invest your dollars. Let me warn you that cheap foundations will not last the 12 hour test. In fact, it may barely last 1 hour. The Covergirl MatteMade foundation applies well and offers a medium to

full coverage. Unlike the KVD True Portrait foundation, CG’s MatteMade feels heavy and starts to crease after minutes. Not cool. The barely-there feel of KVD’s True Portrait along with it’s flawless airbrush finish makes this foundation my numero uno—not to mention it lasts all day! Similar results apply to concealers. e.l.f.’s Hydrating Camo Concealer delivers a lot of product on the applicator which becomes a problem as over applying makeup causes more creasing and smudging. Although the coverage was spot on, the heavy cream concealer

I’m a Fenty girl and no one can take that from me! This Pro Filt’r Setting Powder is a dream. Now, I realize that this is a powdered product but it is THE powdered product. For the most part, they all perform relatively equally but if you have the chance to try this one out— do it. It leaves your skin looking absolutely flawless and comes in a well thought-through colour range. The Covergirl Clean Professional Setting Powder wasn’t overly exciting and it smells a little too much like my grandmother’s floral perfume. It’s not awful but it’s not great.

4. Definition (Bronzer, Blush & Highlighter) As much as I love to splurge on high-end cosmetics, I must admit that there is little to no

difference between expensive and inexpensive definition products. The buildable application process is all too similar, allowing you to chose the intensity of the pigment. To my pleasant surprise, the Wet N’ Wild MegaGlo Highlighting Powder is my new go-to. A little goes a long way, and by that I mean a small dab of the product will give you a metallic glow that lasts all day. This is your new secret weapon.

5. Eyes (Eyebrows, Eyeshadow, Liquid Liner & Mascara) Now I started off biased on this one because I’ve spent the money on almost every Urban Decay Naked Palettes. Did my world fall apart when Milani’s Most Wanted eyeshadow palette in Burning Desire pull through? I’ll never tell. All this to say that Milani’s beautiful $11.97 palette delivers all the pigment in both matte and shimmery colours. Way-to-go Milani. Let’s talk liquid liner. This one makes me laugh. To keep it short and simple, the Hard Candy

Stroke of Gorgeous eyeliner is hands down the worst liquid liner I’ve ever laid eyes on (pun intended). The applicator is flimsy, making it way too easy to smudge and not easy enough to apply pigment. The label reads “black” but my eyes read “sad translucent grey”. That’s a no for me. It goes without saying that the award winning liquid liner from Too Faced is our third splurge-worthy product. May I add that it even lasts through the sleeping test? I think we can all agree that mascara is the one cosmetic product that doesn’t need to be costly. With hundreds of mascaras priced under $15, there is no need to spend a fortune here. Overall, I can absolutely confirm that you do not need to spend a fortune on quality cosmetics. Treating yourself with a few must-haves will solve your high transaction issue without compromising your already-gorgeous face!

Vancouver’s gourmet donuts— are they worth it?

44

45

The Vancouver food scene is in a league of its own. With thousands of specialty coffee shops, restaurants, etc, it makes it impossible to decide which places to check out. On this week’s edition of Are They Worth It?, I travelled to five different gourmet donut shops in search of the city’s best donut. I decided to stop by five popular donut shops around Vancouver, asking each one for their classic donut, as well as a specialty donut to try.

Mello–223 E Pender St. I’m a-glazed by you... Mello was the first stop on my donut tour, and let me tell you, my day started off with a bang! I was instantly impressed by the beautiful look of every donut, as well as the clean decor of the store itself. The exterior was a mellow yellow, aesthetically pleasing to the eye and immediately drawing you inside. Here I tried their classic old fashioned donut and their brioche donut filled with strawberries and whipped cream.

Old Fashioned: Honestly, it was not good. I don’t know what it was, but it didn’t taste like a donut. It truthfully tasted like a cookie. Not great Mello, not great. 1 out of 6... Worst of the bunch

Specialty Donut: A brioche dough donut that is covered in sugar, filled with whipped cream (that is not too sweet), and topped with fresh strawberries. All together creating a delicious dimension of flavour and freshness to the donut itself. Out of all the donuts I had to eat in one day, this was the only one I could actually finish. I’m dairy free but I had no regrets here. 5.5 out of 6... Which would have been a perfect score if it wasn’t so large that I got it everywhere except for my mouth.

Lee’s Donuts–1689 Johnston St. Donut judge me.. Next stop, Lee’s Donuts on Granville Island! It had been years since I visited Granville Island, and thanks to Seth Rogan, Lee’s brought me back. Known for their long lines, I was lucky to go on a day where I could just walk right in.

Classic Donut: Truly a great donut, Lee’s classic was a honey dipped. Delicious dough with a perfectly sweet coating, to me that’s what it’s all about! Brought me back to my childhood driving through Tim Hortons after, or before, soccer games. 4.5 out of 6

Specialty Donut: I am really not a fan of jelly filled donuts, but for the sake of this review I gave one a go. What I learned was that I was right, I’ve never liked them , and I never will. The jelly inside was what I would assume basic jelly to be. Mediocre in taste. Although, on the bright side, it wasn’t overly sweet. 2 out of 6

Lucky’s / 49th Parallel cafe–689 Thurlow St. OR 2902 Main St.

Cin City Mini Donuts–327 E Broadway

Sucrose, yet so far...

Initially I was very taken back by Cin City. I don’t know if it was because I didn’t read their entire name, or if the name wasn’t as clear on Google, but I was not expecting mini donuts when I first decided to check them out.

My experience at Lucky’s was an interesting one. Asking again for their classic donut, as well as their choice of specialty donut, except this time I also had a full on conversation with the guy at the till. He told me all about how his shift hadn’t been going well so far due to angry customers but when I asked if he was getting off soon, he replied, “my shift only started 30 minutes ago”. I hope that me coming in and making nice conversation with him about this article turned his day around, but as for their donuts...

Classic Donut: At Lucky’s, the classic donut was also an old fashioned sour cream donut. It was okay...a very classic old fashioned glazed donut, but that’s about all I have to say about that one. Tim Hortons definitely takes the win for best old fashioned donuts. 3 out of 6

Specialty Donut: To be honest, I don’t even know the flavour of the donut that I had chosen for me, the icing on top looked like either raspberry or blackberry by colour alone. Unfortunately, the icing on top of the donut was so sweet that there was no knowing what it tasted like, other than sugar. Disappointing, truly disappointing. 2 out of 6

Donut mind if I do...

Classic Donut: Who doesn’t like mini donuts? I know I’m not one of those people, I absolutely love them. So I was not disappointed when I walked into Cin City. Crisp, not too sweet, and made fresh to order. What more could you ask for? 4.5 out of 6

Specialty Donut: Deep fried Oreos! Truly a carnival eat at any time of the year and Cin City did not disappoint me with their specialty. Again made fresh to order, their deep fried Oreos were hard to resist. I honestly wish I hadn’t already been to three other donut places so I could have eaten them all. BUT! They were of course way too sweet, so I never would have finished them anyways. 3.5 out of 6 Who would’ve expected that my favourite donut would have also come with the absolute worst I had that day? Not me! I can’t wait to eat next month’s pick: Ramen, and find all of Vancouver’s best/worst eats. Are they worth it? Let’s find out. 47

Spending designer prices on a clothing item can be an intimidating task for you and your wallet. It will almost always feel like a bad financial decision, but is it? Sometimes forking over the extra money can help you and your wardrobe! As someone who has bought and sold many different items working their way through their style evolution, you could say I have a lot of experience here. Here’s my guide to understand when you should and shouldn’t be spending extra on your closet.

Think Before You Spend The high price tag that something carries might be daunting at first, but if you take the time to think about the purchase before handing your card over (or putting in your information online, that I know many of us did too often over quarantine) it can be beneficial for your style journey. When considering whether you should splash your cash on that new jacket, you need to think about whether this is something that would actually work in your wardrobe or if it’s something you want because you saw someone else wear it. Just because a certain style is trending doesn’t mean it’ll always work within your wardrobe or your own style. Nothing is going to cost you more than an expensive item that just sits in your closet.

Can Last You Longer The last thing you want from the perfect pair of jeans is it falling apart after only one year, and with fast fashion brands that is almost a guarantee. A higher price tag doesn’t always equal higher quality (trust me I’ve bought a lot) but it very often does, and with higher quality also comes longevity. Sure, something from H&M might cost five times less than a similar item from Levis but the more expensive item could also last ten times longer, and who doesn’t love a worn in pair of jeans? Another good thing that I rarely hear mentioned about something lasting longer is the need to never search for its replacement. When you have such an amazing piece that fits you perfectly, wouldn’t you want it to last you forever? I know I would never want to find a replacement for my favorite pants!

When Should You Spend Extra It can be intimidating to spend on big price tags when you just KNOW you can find something super similar in Topshop, but there are reasons why that isn’t always the best decision. The easiest way to know when you should 52

When Should You Spend Less Spending Less

Basics can be hard to decide whether to save or to splurge. Basic tops will always be smarter to just get simple versions of, especially if they’re white. And unless your style is based around sportswear or loungewear you can probably get away with something less expensive. As tempting as it is, shoes make poor investment pieces, they wear down too much and by the time you go to sell them they’ll show their wear, even if taken care of.

Spending More

Coats, Jackets, and jewelry are always good investments! They don’t get worn down much if you’re slightly careful. Just checking the current market can also help when choosing to buy something so you can see if it holds value after purchase.

spend extra money on something, is when you know you’ll be keeping it forever. This ties in with the last point of higher price items lasting you longer, if you know it’ll stay with you for years to come and will constantly be worn, then you can probably get away with splurging a little. Another time where it’s justifiable to spend on expensive items, is when they’re unique and you know you will be getting a lot of wear out of it. If alternatives of something don’t exist and it seems like the perfect fun piece of clothing for you to play around with, then go for it! Additionally, with our era of Depop and Grailed, a great time to spend half your pay cheque on an item is when you know you can make your money back on it. I’m sure you’ve all heard the idea of investment pieces and they’re much easier to get than you think. As long as you get something for a good enough price, you know the value of it won’t drop with time, and it won’t be worn down heavily while you wear it, then anything can be an investment. I have made lots of money with investment pieces. When I first started trying to find my personal style I had experimented with many different pieces, and while doing so, I tried to ensure everything I bought was at a good price with no possibility of losing its value. This allowed me to try putting outfits together with higher end clothes but when I finally decide that an item isn’t for me, I can just throw it up online and make all my money back, sometimes I lose a little or make a little but I try to balance it out in the end.

Now maybe you feel like EVERYTHING should be at least $100, right? Wrong. In fact many things people spend lots on are rarely worth the price! Do you need to buy that Gucci tee shirt? Probably not when the only thing really different about it, compared to a shirt from Zara, is the print on the front. In fact, basic tees are something I will always recommend spending little on. Finding which cheap brand makes your favorite shirts and sticking to them is always the best (Uniqlo tees being a popular goto). Trend based items are also typically a bad idea to put big bucks into. They go out of style too quickly and unless you’re okay with wearing something that’s considered out of style, it’s best to leave more of your budget to versatile items. Another issue with trend based clothing is if you try to sell it later, it’ll be harder to find someone who’s looking for it once the trend is over. Chances are if you’re over it, then lots of other people are over it. When you’re first starting to find your personal style, it might not be the best to spend too much. Chances are that item you think will be “just perfect” right now, will probably be something you get bored of next year as your style changes or you want to try something new.

Good places to find items worth investing in The best places I like looking for pieces I don’t mind investing in are smaller boutiques and bigger department stores because they have big sales when it comes to the end of season. Nordstrom, Holt Renfrew, Leisure Center all have some excellent value when it comes to their sales. An honorable mention for a department store is Ssense, although they’re mainly an online business they’re still based in Canada, meaning you don’t have to worry about import duties. And great places to find good quality things for cheap prices are online! TheRealReal and Vestiaire Collective are both great places to shop online for used designer items. My suggestion is to look on as many sites as you can to find the things you want at the lowest price (just make sure you also get them in decent condition).

Question The Guide To When Or When Not To Spend Big On Clothing By Aidan Brainard

I hope these tips will be of help when it comes to deciding on the next item you purchase and all your future cops. My biggest suggestion when it ever comes to buying something you want is to have fun within your means. If you can afford it and it’ll make you happy then do what you feel is best. 53

BEYOND

BTS By Brynn Zdrill

I’ll say it, K-pop is the most innovative music genre. Here’s the rundown of why you should be tuning in. Every Performance Is Like Watching A Super Bowl Halftime Show There’s no such thing as a mediocre performance in K-pop. The dancing. There we go, that’s the whole sentence. Can someone please tell me how these idols can do all these elaborate dance choreographies, stay perfectly synchronized, keep a steady singing voice, and not be out of breath at the end? Pure talent right there. But it makes sense why they make it look so effortless because some groups practice for over 6 hours or sometimes longer.

54

Not to maintain they do multiple performances for weeks or months straight. I’m tired just from reading that. K-pop also wrote the book on stage presence. Sorry to One Direction fans (which I am myself), but if you were to compare BTS and One Direction’s stage presence, One Direction looks like a bunch of lost teenagers that BTS decided to bring up on stage. Hey, someone had to say it. K-pop idols really know how to work the camera and keep an audience’s attention. And again that comes from the hours

of practice and training they put in. Seriously, every performance will either involve dramatic lights, pyrotechnics, striking set design, confetti, or all the above. I guarantee your eyes will be glued to your scene.

Whoever Styles These Artists, Deserves An Award If there’s one thing that all kpop idols have in common, it’s fashion style. I’m always amazed at the looks these idols wear and I have huge respect for the team of stylists that work for these big kpop industries. The outfits are always on trend or they’re trend setting. Whether it’s live performances, music videos, interviews, photoshoots, or leaving the airport, everyone is dressed to perfection as if they’re on the runway. And airport fashion is huge, there are multiple youtube channels and instagram accounts dedicated to these sightings. Luxury pieces are constantly sold out in seconds by fans who spot these outfits. Where are the fans getting all this money? Cause I’d like to know.

Now this is where I give these stylists props. When it comes to a new song being released, the outfits that are picked always match the mood of the song. Let’s say there’s a song with lyrics based around cooking and it’s an intense Hip-Hop song with a heavy bass line. You’d probably want the outfits to resemble a chef but not make it look too cliché or cheesy and have it look edgy. So why not do a leather apron, baggy white dress shirt, combat boots, and throw in some gold chains? And no I did not make this idea up, this is a real song called “God’s Menu” by Stray Kids and the outfits really make them look like they’re fashionable waiters and chefs. Just think that some groups can have 10+ members in them, so dressing all of them in cohesion whilst matching the song’s energy takes a lot of thought and talent.

It’s even Gospel. It’s seriously every music genre you can think of. There really is something for everyone. And groups are notorious for jumping from one style of music to the next. For example, the group Seventeen has done EDM, Jazz, and Hip Hop songs within the past two years, and yet you can still tell it sounds like them.

Not saying that today’s Pop music isn’t good, but it is bland compared when you compare it to K-pop. It sounds more punchy and vibrant which is maybe why it turns people off from listening to it because it’s “too much”. But there is something about it that makes it more musically advanced and sets it apart from mainstream pop. Is it the amount of flow switches? Is it the production as a whole? I honestly can’t quite pinpoint it, but whatever it is, my ears enjoy it. But if you’re new to the genre, give it a listen. It truly Who Cares If You Don’t Know What They’re Saying, is an experience to say the least.

The Music Is Fire

Contrary to the name, K-pop isn’t just pop. It’s R&B. It’s Rock.
