FIGHT THE POWER - PUBLIC ENEMY

The World feels like it is on fire! The global landscape feels ablaze with myriad social, political, and economic conflicts unfolding simultaneously. Despite the remarkable strides made by society, the evolution of warfare lags behind. It remains baffling how a species capable of landing a man on the Moon struggles to foster harmony among its own. The pursuit of common ground appears elusive, with disagreements persisting without meaningful resolution.

In contrast to the brutality often associated with conflict, the world of boxing offers a curious parallel. Within the confines of the ring, adversaries engage in fierce combat, yet at the final bell, they embrace in a gesture of mutual respect. It's a ritual that underscores the acceptance of outcomes and the ability to leave animosity behind.

While the idea of boxers leading nations may seem fanciful, there's merit in drawing inspiration from their sportsmanship. In lieu of war, diplomacy, negotiation, and compromise should be championed as the preferred means of conflict resolution. Only by fostering dialogue and understanding can we hope to navigate the complexities of our shared humanity without resorting to violence.

OUT OF ONE VOICE, MANY

BENNI LATHAM MAKES CHARACTERS COME ALIVE

WITH HER VOICE By Kent Olden

As a kid, I was a huge X-Men fan (the cartoon, not the comic book). I tuned in every Saturday to see what the team was going to get up to next. From start to finish, every episode was a 30-minute wild ride into the lives of Storm, Rogue, Gambit, Jean Grey, Cyclops, and Wolverine. There was always one thing, though, that I could never stop thinking about: “I wonder what the woman who voices Storm actually looks like.” Admit it; we’ve all done it. We’ve all watched a cartoon, listened to a commercial narrator, or even watched a new movie trailer intro by that guy with his raspy baritone and wondered, “Whose voice is that???” One of those voices is excited to put a face to it and share her journey through the world of voice over acting…

On the popular Nickelodeon animated series “Transformers: Earthspark”, Benni Latham voices Dorothy “Dot” Malto, a park ranger, wife and mother who also becomes the adoptive mother to Thrash, Twitch, Nightshade, Hashtag, and Jawbreaker – all Terran Cybertronians. Embodying the nurturing strength of black women, Dot becomes a force to be reckoned with, raising the Cybertronians as her own and pushing them to reach their full potential. Through Dot, Benni introduces a new dimension to the Transformers franchise, all through the power of her voice.

Living out her lifelong dream has Benni patting herself on the back, because she did this and she’s proud to say so. “On one hand, I feel

completely and totally validated in dreaming this dream and betting on myself,” Latham reflects on how she kickstarted her journey in the industry. “Often times we talk ourselves out of our dreams because they may not be practical on paper or to the common person, even though they mean everything to us. To be in this position now on a show of this caliber with the cast that I’m a part of, it’s like, ‘MMM…THAT’S WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT!’” Despite her success and excitement, Benni remains mindful of the responsibilities she has to her audience.

On the other hand, Latham is acutely aware of what being in her position means to Gen Z and Gen Alpha, and she doesn’t take that responsibility lightly. “These kids are growing up with Transformers: Earthspark as their Transformers,” she says, comparing it to the original 1984 series from her youth. “These babies are gonna grow up with Dot in their head, and the idea that I’m a part of someone else’s childhood – children I haven’t even met – it’s humbling, and I’m grateful to be a part of such a powerful artform as animation.” As a Black woman, Benni adds that her 8-year-old self is elated to be involved in the representation she didn’t always see in the cartoons of her youth. It was discovering t hat Cree Summer (A Different World) voiced Penny on Inspector Gadget that flipped the switch in her head and gave her the green light to pursue her dreams.

" I’M A REAL NERD IN REAL LIFE."

While Benni continues to live out her dreams in the VO world, she still has more she’d like to pursue. “I’m a real nerd in real life,” she says, “and I still go to the comic bookstore every month, and there’s this one comic called Void Rivals where G.I. Joe and Transformers come together to fight some stuff. I think it would be dope as all get out if Dot became a part of the G.I. Joe ranks on some level. Her military history, the fact that she’s friends with Megatron – that crossover would be crazy!” Being the hero isn’t the only thing on her agenda as Benni admits, "I’d love to voice a DC villain, or a Marvel villain. I love villains, but because I sound so friendly >laughs< I don’t go on too many villain auditions, but I swear there’s a real good bad guy living inside me and I just wanna let it loose!”

With all that she’s accomplished, Benni says there’s still so much more the studios can do. “I’d immediately like to see studios take chances on different types of projects, you know? Nostalgia’s at an all time high, but nostalgia has its place,” she says. “It would be great to see some new, independent projects, like Lackadaisy, which is completely independent.” Latham is also a huge proponent of shifting animation from being associated solely with children’s entertainment to allencompassing. “Animation is a medium. It’s like painting. It’s like film. It’s just a way to tell a story.”

As Benni continues to tell these stories, the world will tune in to listen.

Nickelodeon’s Transformers: Earthspark can be streamed on Paramount+. To learn more about Benni Latham and her upcoming projects, follow her on Instagram at @bennilatham.

Jovon Nature Lover Switched to DOVATO Compensated by ViiV Healthcare

DOVATO is different: unlike other HIV treatments that contain 3 or 4 medicines, DOVATO contains just 2 medicines in 1 pill.

DOVATO is a complete prescription regimen for adults new to HIV-1 treatment or replacing their current HIV-1 regimen when their doctor determines they meet certain requirements.

Important Facts About DOVATO

This is only a brief summary of important information about DOVATO and does not replace talking to your healthcare provider about your condition and treatment.

What is the most important information I should know about DOVATO?

If you have both human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV-1) infection and Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection, DOVATO can cause serious side effects, including:

• Resistant HBV. Your healthcare provider will test you for HBV infection before you start treatment with DOVATO. If you have HIV-1 and hepatitis B, the HBV can change (mutate) during your treatment with DOVATO and become harder to treat (resistant). It is not known if DOVATO is safe and effective in people who have HIV-1 and HBV infection.

• Worsening of HBV infection. If you have HBV infection and take DOVATO, your HBV may get worse (flare-up) if you stop taking DOVATO. A “flare-up” is when your HBV infection suddenly returns in a worse way than before.

° Do not run out of DOVATO. Refill your prescription or talk to your healthcare provider before your DOVATO is all gone.

Results may vary.

*Undetectable means the amount of HIV in your blood is below the level that can be measured by a lab test.

†Compared to a 3- or 4-drug regimen.

° Do not stop DOVATO without first talking to your healthcare provider.

° If you stop taking DOVATO, your healthcare provider will need to check your health often and do blood tests regularly for several months to check your liver function and monitor your HBV infection. It may be necessary to give you a medicine to treat hepatitis B. Tell your healthcare provider about any new or unusual symptoms you may have after you stop taking DOVATO.

For more information about side effects, see “What are possible side effects of DOVATO?”

What is DOVATO?

DOVATO is a prescription medicine that is used without other HIV-1 medicines to treat human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV-1) infection in adults: who have not received HIV-1 medicines in the past, or to replace their current HIV-1 medicines when their healthcare provider determines that they meet certain requirements. HIV-1 is the virus that causes Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). It is not known if DOVATO is safe and effective in children.

Please see additional Important Facts About DOVATO on the following page.

PLAN THE ULTIMATE ITINERARY FOR

Iceland and Copenhagen

ON ICELANDAIR'S STOPOVER PROGRAM

According to the 2023 American Express trend report, the popularity of experiential travel, especially immersive food-focused itineraries, has been vastly increasing. 81% of respondents now consider trying local cuisines as the highlight of their travels. Additionally, nearly half of Gen Z and millennial travelers, projected to make up 80% of luxury purchases by 2030 (including travel), plan entire itineraries around particular dining establishments, as indicated in the report.

If your holiday itinerary revolves around savoring culinary experiences, why not maximize your holiday and turn one trip into two? With the surge in multi-country travel (reportedly 60% of travelers prefer them), airlines like Icelandair provide stopover programs enabling travelers to combine two or more cities into a single trip (without any additional fees). This provides the opportunity for added adventure in Iceland, such as geothermal bathing at The Blue Lagoon or whale watching in Húsavík, all while maximizing the value of your money spent.

ICELANDAIR'S STOPOVER PROGRAM

Icelandair's stopover program offers complimentary stopovers in Iceland's capital city, Reykjavík, at no additional airfare cost when booking round-trip European flights to Nordic cities like Copenhagen.

Travelers can easily book this extra stopover by selecting the "Stopover in Iceland" option while booking a roundtrip to Europe through Icelandair's website. It's recommended to include a stopover in Iceland either on the way to Europe or on the return journey (a stopover on the return leg is often more cost-effective).

You can book the stopover with any ticket, from economy to premium (business class). With an Economy Classic ticket or Saga Premium (Business) Class ticket, you can enjoy a maximum stopover of seven days in Iceland, while with an Economy Light fare, the maximum stopover duration is three days.

Icelandair's business class seats (Saga Premium Class) offer larger and wider reclining seats (the legroom is 40" versus economy's 32") while on an elevated flying experience thanks to friendly attendants, a travel kit, and gourmet meals with vegan options. Passengers are served either a three-course meal on North American flights or a two-course meal for European ones. Other perks include priority check-in and access to the Saga Premium Lounge, where travelers can enjoy complimentary food, comfortable seating, charging ports, and more.

CUISINE AND CULTURE IN SPAIN’S

CASTILLA-LA MANCHA

In south-central Spain, surrounding Madrid on three sides, you’ll find the region of Castilla-La Mancha. The region teems with plains, vineyards, mountains, Roman archeological sites, and windmills. Compared to Madrid, it’s simpler and slower-paced while still embracing all that defines Spain. Here’s where to stop on your trip through Castilla-La Mancha.

CUENCA CULTURE

Start your trip in Cuenca, home of the iconic UNESCO hanging houses — homes built into the side of a cliff so they appear to be teetering on the edge of the rock. It’ll be a great first stop to wrap your head around both the outstanding culture and cuisine of Castilla-La Mancha.

Next is the Cathedral of Cuenca, which was built in the 12th century. Inside, the windows sparkle with 20th-century modern art pieces. The majority of the stained glass inside was created by two abstract artists, Gustavo Torner and Gerardo Rueda, and designed for the structure. Watch the colors stripe the floors and walls as the sun shifts across the sky.

If you’re hungry you can book your evening meal at Casas Colgadas, a restaurant inside one of the hanging houses helmed by Michelinstarred chef Jesús Segura. Cuenca was Spain’s 2023 Culinary Capital, which means there’s a rich culinary tradition of local products, but also new innovations in the food. Segura works hard for that innovation. While the menu is tied to locally produced products, he’s also working to make the food even more sustainable by introducing dairyfree cheeses and reviving an abandoned flour mill to ensure someone local mills the restaurant’s flour.

SAFFRON AND WINDMILLS IN CONSUEGRA

Next, head to Consuegra. I traveled to Spain in early October, just before the massive saffron harvest that happens in Consuegra, known as the Land of Saffron. Only ten families in the town actively produce saffron (down from 115 in the 1980s), but the whole area celebrates with a saffron festival in the last two weeks of October. You’ll be able to wear traditional clothes, try your hand at peeling saffron, and visit local producers to learn more about the spice. Keep an eye out for jewelry from Estigma, a boutique line that includes real saffron threads in each piece. The creator, Maria del Carmen Zamorano, is in the fourth generation of a family growing and producing saffron on the same farm in Consuegra. Making saffron jewelry is actually an old tradition that was lost to time, but Zamorano is bringing it back to "romanticize saffron and put the gold of Spain on display," she says.

Fans of Don Quixote, take a side trip to see the windmills of La Mancha. Twelve of them stretch out from the edges of a medieval fortress, and even though one has been converted into an ice cream shop, you can imagine yourself in Quixote’s shoes — fighting off the giants he mistook them to be. The farthest one away from the fortress is the best spot for photos, and the windmill next to that one is a gift shop and museum.

TOURING TOLEDO

Finish your trip in Toledo, where you can wander the winding streets both above and below ground. Before you get there, book a tour with VisiToledo, and be sure Diego is your guide. He’ll take you to the greatest hits, like the ancient cathedral and the most historic spots in town, but let him lead you into the tunnels underground for the best experience. Diego is also an archaeologist, and one of only four people in the whole city with keys to the tunnels. You’ll be led through ancient Roman baths and secret synagogues from the 16th century before popping back up above ground.

Remember to stop in at Santo Tomé, too, a family-owned bakery that’s been in operation since 1856. There, you’ll be able to pick up a historical treat: marzipan stuffed with fruit in the shape of an eel. The eels are curled into a spiral shape, iced to create scales and dragon-like faces, and paired with candied fruit—and absolutely delicious.

HOW TO GET AROUND

If you want to tour the Castilla-La Mancha area, a car is the best option. Rent one and drive from each city to the next, and then leave the car parked. Once you're there, you’ll want to explore the cities on foot. Most of the streets are closely wound with lots of twists and turns and narrow passages. It’s just easier to walk!

WHERE TO STAY

Luckily for us road trippers, the government of Spain has assembled a series of hotels throughout the country that are designed for those traveling by car. They’re called paradores and tell the history of Spain itself. Nearly everyone is in a historic building — I stayed at Parador de Cuenca, once the San Pablo Monastery, and Parador de Toledo, a newer building on top of a high hill overlooking the city. The Paradores network began in 1928 to encourage Spaniards to travel to off-the-beaten-path destinations. Now there are 98 of them, planned out, so you’ll have great restaurants to stop at between cities. Each Parador offers two lodging options: full board (the room and all meals are included) or half-board (the room and breakfast or lunch are included). It’s a great way to see the history of Spain first-hand on your journey.

Fight To Win

JAMAINE ORTIZ DISCUSSES HIS CAREER, HIS LOVE FOR FASHION, AND HOW NO ONE OUT HERE IS EVER GOING TO BEAT HIM.

“I was probably about 14–15 years old, and I started sparring with pros—grown men—and I was beating them up. Everyone was telling me—this is my future,” Jamaine recalls.

It’s a Friday afternoon, and we’re chatting via Zoom. Ortiz, who tells me he loves to travel when he’s not training or fighting, is currently vacationing in Dubai. This is just months after his controversial fight against Teofimo Lopez, where he [Ortiz] lost—not by knockout but by a points system. Most, including myself, felt that he should have won that fight.

Ortiz is not your average boxer because there’s something different about him. There’s an energy, a hunger, and an undeniable vibe that exudes confidence over cockiness. In the current era of boxing, where controversy seems to overshadow the actual talent in the ring, it’s nice to see athleticism being prioritized when he is mentioned while others cannot say the same.

This might be because he’s truly only concerned about himself and his performance in the ring. When I ask him about any boxer role models or people he looked up to, Ortiz gives a definitive “no.”

Hailing from Worcester, Massachusetts, Ortiz started fighting at a very young age. “I first got into [boxing] when I was about 7 years old. That’s when I first got into the Boys & Girls Club. Prior to that, I was fighting a lot in school and outside. The first time I had a pair of gloves on was when my dad put them on me to fight some kids outside. That’s where my journey took off.” Ortiz explains.

To date, Ortiz has 17 wins, 8 knockouts, 2 losses, and 1 draw. An impressive set of stats for someone who made his boxing debut back in 2016. Read more to find out how Ortiz isn’t afraid to fight.

BLEU: What does your training regimen look like leading up to a fight?

Ortiz: The elements of my boxing training take about 2.5 hours for 5 to 6 days a week. My strength and conditioning take about 90 minutes for about 3 days a week. Sometimes I switch it up with swimming, basketball, and cross-training. It’s a full work day when you count the travel time, the rest between, and the actual work time. It’s a full shift.

BLEU: How do you mentally prepare yourself before entering the ring?

Ortiz: To be honest, I don’t really have any rituals. Besides making sure that I pray and just making sure I’m having fun, I’m in a good mood, and I’m happy. The only ritual I have is what I eat after a weighin. I love seafood pasta and chocolate chip cookies.

BLEU: Are you a cook?

Ortiz: Nah, I have a chef, and she cooks it all.

BLEU: Can you share a memorable moment from your boxing career so far?

Ortiz: All of my highlights didn’t end in victories—in the sense of world championships. For me, the highlight of my career is the irony of how things come full circle. One of my idols and someone I emulate, Vasilly Lomachencko—I would visualize myself fighting him when I first turned pro, and he was already a world champion. One year later, I ended up facing him, and I put my hands on him. A lot of people thought I beat him across the world, and it was a very controversial decision.

BLEU: It seems that happens to you often, with everything thinking you won except the judges. How have you processed your most recent loss against Teofimo Lopez?

Ortiz: I’ve been kind of getting back to what I used to do when I was an amateur, which was knowing and understanding your judges. Back in the day, my coach used to bring me to judges' meetings, and I would hear them and understand what they liked and looked out for. When I would go into a ring, I would fight according to what the judges liked and how they scored. I think I’m going to be a free agent real soon, and I want to make sure my next play is under my control.

BLEU: Are there any particular fights you are looking to win?

Ortiz: I’m looking to fight any of the world champions right now, which could be the winner between Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia. Subriel Matias. I’d love a rematch against Teofimo. I know the day Shakur Stevenson moves up to 140 [pounds], I’ll be the one to beat the brakes on him. A lot of these top guys I’ve been facing since the amateurs—and even in the pros—nobody can say they’ve ever beat me or beat me up. I know I’m going to keep exposing these guys and showing them I’m a better fighter.

BLEU: They call you the technician. How did you get this name? What’s the origin story?

Ortiz: When I turned pro, I never had a nickname. People were pressuring me, saying, “Every boxer needs to have a nickname." I was working in the carpenter’s union, and people were trying to give me a name like “The Hammer” or something that related to a tool. I kept saying, “It ain't me." I’m the type of person who, if it ain't me, I can’t rock with it. One time I was coming from a strength training session with former world champion Jose Rivera—he’s from my hometown—and through our conversation, the technician came up. I read the definition, which was “a person skilled in or an expert in their craft. I felt that was me not only inside the ring but in my personal life as well.

BLEU: Beyond boxing, what are some things you like to do with your time?

Ortiz: I definitely do a lot of traveling. On my off days, I get into investments. I do a lot of research and see what I can get into. If it’s not real estate, it’s usually in stocks and options. I’m always working on my personal development and seeing how I can be a better human being as well. Definitely fashion as well. I love to fly, and I like to express myself through fashion.

BLEU: How would you describe your style?

Ortiz: A lot of times when I dress, I like to give a Fuck You attitude to the people, but in a classy way. I’m not a person who talks a lot of sh*t on the internet or is arrogant on the internet. My confidence is out of the roof. How can I express my confidence without sounding arrogant? Sometimes I like to do that through fashion. Other people can’t pull this off, but I can. I try to give people that type of feel with what I wear.

BLEU: What advice would you give to aspiring boxers who are just starting out in the sport?

Ortiz: Create the fan base. Sell yourself, but stay authentic to who you are. Your being fake will always come to light. The work will always be shown. Hard work will always prevail. Stay authentic, work hard, and your time will come.

" I’M ALWAYS WORKING ON MY PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT AND SEEING HOW I CAN BE A BETTER HUMAN BEING AS WELL. "

KELLS BARNETT

Kells Barnett is an avid fashion lover whose Harlem roots intensified his clothing style. Barnett established his fashion knowledge early on and recognized how the culture dominated society. According to Barnett, the beautiful thing about fashion is “the voice it gives you; you become such an influence when you dress well, so I've always used that voice of influence to promote community pride." Today, Barnett is the Director of Marketing at 5001 Flavors and owns a boutique called the Harlem Haberdashery.

He continues to combine fashion and style to further connect with the youth and strengthen community engagement by launching #TakeCareofHarlem. The hashtag was a call to action because Barnett takes great pride in the community.. After the pandemic, Barnett used the hashtag to collaborate with other organizations to raise money for hospitals and care centers and hosted several charity events, including back-to-school, holiday, and prom/graduation drives. Barnett's overall goal for #TakeCareofHarlem is to promote arts, culture, music, and entrepreneurship to the community.

KAREEM JACKSON

Kareem Jackson, also known as Tef Poe, is a hip-hop rapper, musician, and activist concerned about black men's mental state, especially after the global Coronavirus outbreak in 2020. The pandemic, along with the daily problems black men face in America, prompted Jackson to participate in social justice by launching "Black Men Build." BMB is a group of black and brown men who want to participate in community affairs and promote positive social change for the next generation.

Jackson describes his inspiration behind BMB when he says, "We're in an era where it's time to set a historical precedent for the next generation, where they can look back and say what they did and tried to do."

The St. Louis native became a stepping stone for BMB to discover creative ways to speak to African Americans about the pandemic, which led to discussions of other issues within their communities.

"COVID-19 was an opportunity for us to find a creative way to talk to black people about a serious health crisis," said Jackson. "We used the first issue to do that, and then it spawned three other issues."

BMB is impactful because it demonstrates why black men should succeed and elevate themselves to bigger and better endeavors. Jackson also considers

expanding BMB because black men aren't localized and should not be limited to one specific place.

"It was really important for us to expand because, all too often, St. Louis has been excluded from the national conversation," said Jackson.

Spoken word artist and BMB's lead field organizer Corey Wright also known as his artist’s name Corey Black shared his input about the organization saying, "This is my first time having a position like this; it put me in a place where people trust me to do the job, and it has given me the tools I need to do well at executing every other role and task I'm involved with.”

BMB has allowed Black to think about the state of the community since he was 18 years old, and his positioning with the organization has allowed him to encourage other men to elevate and mature despite all odds. Black said he's relatable to other men from various backgrounds because he grew up in the church and can connect with the streets.

Jackson created BMB for black men, but black females can also participate because the organization touches on spirituality, entrepreneurship, educating yourself about your rights, mental health, and arts programming.

Mr. Wonderful Is Dead

Summer Dennis

USES HER MUSIC AND PLATFORM TO TELL REALISTIC STORIES WOMEN CAN RELATE TO, CHALLENGE
AND FOSTER COMMUNITY. By DJ Chalant

STEREOTYPES,

In July 2023, Summer Dennis released her latest album, Mr Wonderful is Dead. Far more than just a collection of soulful tunes, this album serves as a bold proclamation, challenging traditional narratives surrounding women and romance. Breaking away from the conventional themes of waiting for a “Mr Wonderful”, the seven tracks on this album weave a narrative that empowers women to craft their destinies. From soulful melodies to poignant lyrics, “Mr. Wonderful Is Dead” marks a significant departure from conventional love and breakup songs, thanks to the collaborative genius of lead writer Tiara Thomas. Dennis and Thomas have created an anthology of songs that resonate with women, offering a refreshing perspective that encourages self-empowerment and independence. One of the standout tracks, “Dancing Alone”, embodies that message.

“We wanted to tell stories that women can identify with, without feeling like you have to have a lover to

do so.”

A native of Prince George’s County, Maryland, Dennis brings a rich tapestry of experiences to her music, shaped by the cultural influences of her Jamaican and Trinidadian heritage. Her journey from “singing hymns in the church to fine-turning her falsetto” has been transformative. Her journey to become an R&B starlet can be attributed to her resilience and authenticity. Her college years marked a turning point, where she faced challenges as a former studentathlete aspiring to major in music. Undeterred, she honed her craft during downtime and gradually embraced her independence.

She is inspired by musical icons like Stevie Wonder, Earth, Wind & Fire, Lauryn Hill, and Whitney Houston. Dennis’s background and influences are a testament to her musical prowess and ability to create a unique blend of sounds that captivates listeners with each note.

Beyond the music, Dennis's life journey adds depth to the thematic richness of "Mr. Wonderful Is Dead." As a child of faith, Dennis's upbringing instilled in her a sense of empathy and a commitment to helping those in need. This commitment transcends the notes of her songs, extending to her advocacy for social issues such as domestic abuse and mental health. Drawing from personal experiences, Dennis actively supports and provides resources for young women navigating abusive relationships. Her dedication to these initiatives goes beyond rhetoric, opening her doors to those seeking refuge in dire situations.

“A lot of black women don’t get a lot of empathy from the

population. So, I try to make sure that I can be there for somebody.” -Summer Dennis

In a society where black women are often misunderstood and underrepresented, Summer Dennis stands as a beacon of support. Through her philanthropy and support of organizations like Bread for the City, she is dedicated to creating tangible change for those in need. Social media has also become a powerful tool for Summer to amplify her message and connect with those who share similar experiences. Her Mr. Wonderful is Dead Instagram series is a platform to share stories, spread awareness, and foster community.

Mr. Wonderful is Dead, is the latest offering in Dennis’s creative journey that started to build momentum after releasing her breakout single “Everything.” She would continue to fine tune her craft with subsequent releases like “Second Summer” (2019), and Something’s Gotta Change” (2020). “Mr. Wonderful Is Dead” stands as the culmination of this journey, representing a mature artist unafraid to challenge norms.

In the world of R&B, Summer Dennis is not just an artist; she is a storyteller, a social advocate, and a beacon of authenticity. When asked what is next for her, she states she is working on new music. And though, at the time, there was no title set for the album, Summer maintains that she will continue to make music that resonates with the diverse experiences of women.

Jesse Boykins III

ARTISTIC EXPRESSION IS an integral part of Jessie Boykins III’s creative process. He’s an artist who isn’t afraid to think outside the box and push the boundaries of his artistic capabilities. With music being one of the most potent forms of expression, Boykins has a space to fully be himself.

The Chicago-born artist has been around music his whole life, and his first memory of embracing it was in Jamaica, where he followed his cousins around while they were taking voice lessons. Eventually, Boykins would pick up on his cousins’ lessons and start singing himself.

When it came to songwriting, Boykins was a teenager in high school listening to music, and the song that stood out to him was Brian McKnight’s 1993 single “One Last Cry.” According to the singer, the track opened his mind to how one can express themselves on a song.

“I never heard a dude talk about that, from that standpoint of experiencing it,” Boykins tells Bleu Magazine. “I thought that to be such a powerful thing, and so I was like, ‘Man, I’m trying to do that,’ you know what I mean? Like, I want to talk like that on music, you know, and I want to be able to reach that and be fearless and express that as a man, you know.”

He continued, “And so, you know, like Brian McKnight and then, you know, listening to a lot of Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye and all these different records that I really connected with, really made me want to speak out to my feelings.”

Boykins’ passion for songwriting led to him writing poetry and making money by writing love letters for friends in high school. By the time he got to college,

he had learned about music production and begun recording music for himself and others. Eventually, Boykins learned that his purpose was to bring joy to others, and what better way to do that than through music?

“I always knew my purpose was to bring joy or transmute some type of emotion, and I realized my passion was writing, so the combination of those two things told me if I could get really good at both, I should be good for life no matter what,” he says. “Even if I don’t win a Grammy or go platinum, it doesn’t matter as long as I give someone a feeling.”

Boykins released his first full-length release, The Beauty Created, in 2008 and followed that up with a string of EPs and studio albums, such as Zulu Guru (released in 2012), Love Apparatus (released in 2014), Bartholomew (released in 2017), and more. He signed a major label deal with Def Jam Recordings but soon felt how limiting that was to his artistic expression.

“I’m a visual artist that makes music,” says Boykins. “I wouldn’t be the person I am if I didn’t see what I was truly capable of, you know. Every album just made me realize more and more what my capacity is. There was no limit to my creation.”

He continues, “When I did the Def Jam deal, that was me trying to, you know, figure out a way to conform. But I learned really fast how I’m different, like my personality traits don’t align with these people in here. Everybody is on commission or on salary. I work for a higher energy.”

When Boykins got out of his deal with Def Jam, he had to recalibrate his artistry as he was getting used to the demands of working with major labels. He needed

" I ALWAYS KNEW MY PURPOSE WAS TO BRING JOY OR TRANSMUTE SOME TYPE OF EMOTION, AND I REALIZED MY PASSION WAS WRITING, SO THE COMBINATION OF THOSE TWO THINGS TOLD ME IF I COULD GET REALLY GOOD AT BOTH, I SHOULD BE GOOD FOR LIFE NO MATTER WHAT. "

to sit down and understand what was happening before creating from a genuine place again.

That time Boykins spent understanding who he was as an artist led to his latest album and first in six years, New Growth, which dropped in October 2023. The 14-track effort has Boykins expressing his art in his own eclectic way, and it’s the catalyst in this new journey he’s set to embark on that includes even more albums.

“A blessing. I don’t want no regular job, and I ain’t trying

to work for an old building,” says Boykins. “I don’t want someone to tell me what I gotta do every day. I’ve never had to do that, and if I ever felt like something wasn’t for me, I had no problem leaving it. I’m not a prisoner to any perspective of what life should be.”

He adds, “I’m blessed with my artistry and the vision that I have, the traits that I’ve learned and everything that comes with music, like focus, discipline and understanding patience.”

ASHLEY HENDERSON

SHARES HER STRATEGIES AND EXPERIENCES AS A NEWER AGENCY IN MARKETING. By Hassan Wiggins

NIKE’S YARDRUNNERS CAMPAIGN PRODUCER SHARES HOW SHE TACKLES THE FIELD OF MARKETING WITH A FOCUS ON BOTH OLDER AND NEWER GENERATIONS.

GRADUATING FROM AN HBCU herself, Ashley Henderson understood the importance of community, engagement, and discipline when starting her own agency in marketing. She would evolve from working with many familiar brands, such as Estée Lauder, to bigger names, such as Nike and YouTube. Ashley began her agency in 2016, located in Los Angeles, and focused on event advertisement. This traction would garner visual attention alongside showing her marketing creativity and growing her agency and vision within the advertisement. Her time at Estée Lauder, blossomed her idea to branch out and begin her own agency. Learning the business side of marketing was crucial in her journey as an entrepreneur. “I learned the true definition of hard work and impact.” Ashley’s prior work experience in the marketing field allowed her to focus on creating rather than solely working with what was given. “Being able to build events for beauty brands in creative ways would be what I learned. With it, I can say I have applied it to how we approach things from a consumer lens or standpoint.” She highlights that upholding dedication to the craft of marketing that she’s brought over into League Twenty-Two. “Being able to have these partners means more than just advertisement; It means they trust what we make, how we lead, execution, strategy. It also offers a sense of familiarity.”

When starting her agency, Ashley wanted to maintain core values to ensure any company large or small would be represented properly with precision. Reaching out to all different personalities and individuals is ideal. She shares how she maintains this throughout all her projects, saying “We base ourselves on four core values that we approach every project with; Creativity, rooted in intention and culture. Premium execution, we pride ourselves on making a product that is a memorable experience. Not just the client but the consumer as well.” The other values she holds true to are integrity and agility. It’s inevitable things and ideas will be recycled, but she focuses on pushing boundaries and integrity of ideas. She exemplifies agility through not just her focus on a project but also growth. Adaptation and resourcefulness remain keys to her agile work environment built at League Twenty-Two.

Ashley remains a sharp staple in the field of advertisement and marketing. Aside from her unbroken values that guide the way she handles situations, there are more strategies and outlooks placed within League Twenty-Two to build it to be an agency beyond the simple things. Ashley shares that she focuses heavily on the implementation of the youth, sharing “It’s important for me to have youth on my team. They tell me about TikTok and the trends that are happening in music, culture, and fashion. We make sure we’re integrating social pieces into every project.” She capitalizes on photos and products to stay ahead, where many might lose grip of the youth audience. She follows with, “We went on about curating these experiences by thinking about what this activation looks like, and feels like. Can we add color, how would we stay relevant?” Using that lens, she says the barrier that the youth face to many long-lasting agencies, how do we bring them into this as well?

Ashley Henderson emphasizes the importance of collaboration in event hosting to her clients and colleagues. Culture will always be stagnant in her work, as seen in her HBCU Yardrunners collaboration. Giving back to her community, bringing in people of color, and showing the value of open mindsets are how she navigates her newer agency. Although she expresses her own view on League Twenty-Two and how age is its primary obstacle. “As a black woman, it’s challenging having an agency with a younger legacy. We will constantly have to show and prove, continuously, that we can measure up to other

agencies with a different demographic than us.” Regardless of the systemic complications faced when starting as a newer black agency, Ashley Henderson continues to defy the odds and make meaningful connections with her clients as well as the consumer.

DONNELL RAWLINGS

FROM UNDERDOG TO HITMAKER IN COMEDY By Dominique Carson

COMEDIAN AND ACTOR Donnell

Rawlings' career has evolved since his early days on the HBO drama show The Wire and Comedy Central sketch comedy sitcoms Chappelle's Show and Guy Code. One of his iconic sayings was, "I'm rich, biaaaaatch," he appeared as Little Richard with his Jheri curl or Ashy Larry from the Chappelle Show.

Rawlings presents his versatility on

sitcoms, and it has progressed to the point where he appeared on Snoop Dogg's F*cn Around Comedy Special.

In November 2023, he performed at Funny Bone Comedy Club in Virginia Beach and was presented with his own Netflix special, co-produced by Dave Chappelle. He says his Netflix special is in a different boat than his previous comedic works within the last 32

years. He has been a road comic for 20 years but was thinking about working on a special when Dave Chappelle approached him with the idea during the pandemic.

"I was in Ohio, doing 50 shows during the pandemic, and every night, Dave Chappelle would say, Donnie, I want to produce your special. Now, I wasn't even thinking about doing a special, but I said okay, and we set a

date," said Rawlings.

Rawlings and Chappelle did the special and worked on the release date, but two weeks before the official date, Chappelle asked Rawlings if they could do the special again.

"My response was why, and his response was I can put you in front of any audience every day of the week, and you'll rip it; it doesn't make it a great special. We have a lot of COVID-related jokes to protocol to get into the show; it will cut our audience from 700 to 300," said Rawlings. Chappelle felt I could work on the jokes; they could be better. "Two years later, we're in New York, and everything's on point, though. There's no COVID protocol, and I listened to him, did my homework, and I think we have a great special."

Rawlings is confident about the special based on longevity in the game, respecting Chappelle's counsel, and the subject matters mentioned in the special. For Rawlings, it's all about giving him the best and delivering jokes that stand the test of time. It's his extraordinary resume because everything started lining up for the comedian.

"I think my experience and connections lined up for the Netflix special, and everything connected for the right time for my fans," said Rawlings.

Rawlings has been candid in his segments throughout his career, and the Netflix special was no exception. On the special, he talked about mental health, toxic relationships, coparenting, being an older father, and other subjects that people can relate to regularly.

Although Rawlings has been in the industry for a long time, his definition of comedy has stayed the same, especially for stand-up. Back then, you got on a stage with a microphone and performed in front of a live audience. But, nowadays, you can also entertain an audience through humor through social media. Although comedians generate a more substantial buzz through social media, Rawlings knows he is a true comedian. He knows that without followers and social media engagement, he can entertain a crowd immensely without wavering.

"Is it safe to say that I am the s***? Did it cross your mind with the right platform? It's light out, and if your answer is yes, then there you go; you see me grow and evolve as a comedian," said Rawlings.

Rawlings knew he was on the trajectory to win in 2023, but when he did his Netflix special, he felt like the people following him since The Wire and The Corner; Rawlings has to give people what they want.

"Where I'm now, I've never been as successful. I've never made as much money as I'm making right now. I've never seen me moving to Dallas much, so right now, my special only validates who I am, and you'll know who I am, period, front and center," said Rawlings.

.
" It doesn't matter what I'm going through mentally. Whether I am mad about the business, his mother, or anything else, once I see his face, it's like complete relief, "

Outside of comedy, Rawlings delivers an ode to fatherhood but uses the acronym D.I.L.F. (Dedicated, Involved, Loving, Father) and uses the acronym to use words that people associate themselves with and switch it up.

The acronym reflects who he is as a father, and his son, Austen, is the greatest inspiration behind the slogan. Rawling says the acronym would only be launched with his son.

"At one point, I thought fatherhood would bypass me; I thought I would be a super uncle and devote my time to my career. Then, when my son came along, he made me think differently," said Rawlings. "I realized that this is the purpose of my life, and he changed a lot of stuff that I was doing, a lot of stuff that I'm doing now. I realized there's something bigger than me, and I have something in my life right now that I get unconditional love."

Austen also expressed his aspirations in entertainment to Rawlings. Still, he informed his son about the importance of strong character, told him there would be people who would not believe in you or your talent, and overcame rejection because it's a rigorous industry.

Austen understood his father's reasoning but expressed that at eight, his dad inspired

his desire to be in entertainment. It was such a massive moment for Rawlings because although he told his son that he must be built correctly to be in entertainment, Austen recognized him as an inspiration.

"It doesn't matter what I'm going through mentally. Whether I am mad about the business, his mother, or anything else, once I see his face, it's like complete relief, " said Rawlings. "I want to give him more opportunity than my dad gave me, but for me, it's okay; it's like I get to start over; I'm building another me in the world, but better."

Rawlings said his goals are set for 2024 because he is winning, especially since he released his Netflix special in February 2024. Rawlings has tunnel vision for 2025 and will continue to do stand-up for comedy lovers. As a veteran of comedy, he wants to make sure that he can have his name on the screen where people can watch him do stand-up. He says he doesn't need a small film or sitcom; that's it for him in a nutshell.

"All I want to do is go out and rip the stage in front of the audience, make my motherf****** money, and make sure my son is good; that's it because I'm already winning," said Rawlings.

ERIC ANWAR CHALLENGING ARTISTIC NORMS

WITH

LIES AND Fairy Tales

LA-BASED VISUAL artist Eric Anwar unveiled a dream-like world where childhood fables meet the reality of growing up in his inaugural solo Santa Monica art exhibition Lies and Fairy Tales. The show, comprised of 18 mixed-medium pieces, reimagines traditional narratives and challenges established norms by immersing viewers in a world of nostalgic childhood characters living in an unexpected modern reality that Anwar has rewritten.

The exhibition juxtaposes the personas of these beloved characters with the disenchanting, arduous journey of life and lost innocence. It evokes flashes of Roy Lichtenstein’s vibrancy and nostalgia, KAW’s precision and line work, and Banksy’s social commentary, all of whom Anwar has said inspired his style. He also said he chose the Santa Monica venue for its unconventional style.

“Like the unconventional themes of my art, I felt it was only right for me to have an unconventional show, so I decided to design, create, produce, fund, and put on my debut show myself, without any gallery or representation. When I say myself, I mean no formal representation, just the informal ones, like all my close friends and team who are somehow crazy enough to join me in bringing this world to life,” says Anwar. “We’re not starting with white walls and polished floors like a typical gallery, but instead, we’re redesigning an empty 10,000 sq ft industrial warehouse. We are trying to create a place where people don’t come to view; they come to stay.”

He continues,“I have had a passion for art and visited many exhibitions and galleries, and although I was always fascinated with seeing the pieces up close in person, I rarely felt that the physical space represented the art. I felt that the format was always rooted in tradition, but we are in a new generation, which is why I wanted to create a world around Lies and Fairy Tales beyond the art.”

A first-generation American raised in a multicultural household, Anwar has been developing the vision of Lies and Fairy Tales for nearly a decade. Anwar, whose day job is the Head of Marketing and Creative for rolling paper brand Zig-Zag, first made waves in creative branding, advertising, and entrepreneurship using unconventional methods to elevate brands. His experience spans over two decades in the performing and visual arts, storytelling, and filmmaking, all of which influenced Lies and Fairy Tales, which he says was built parallel to his life.

So, what’s next? Anwar says a lot. He has begun the creative development for his following two exhibitions, which will introduce new original characters and set alongside new storylines while retaining the central theme of commentating on the society we live in today. Eric’s debut exhibition is not merely a commencement; it’s the culmination of a life immersed in creativity.

CARL WEATHERS A

REMARKABLE HERO IN ENTERTAINMENT

ON “THE TODAY SHOW”, actor Sylvester Stallone emotionally shared kind remarks about former actor and NFL football player Carl Weathers. Choking up with emotion, Stallone said, "I couldn't have made it without him. We lost a legend. My life was forever changed for the better the day I met Carl Weathers. Rest in peace, keep punching."

To Stallone, Weathers carried himself as Superman from his voice, talent, humor, and drive. Stallone and Weathers were featured in the first four Rocky movies together and although Weathers' character, Apollo Creed, died in the fourth sequel, later films still showed clips of Weathers.

Weathers expressed how Rocky movies changed his life in an interview with the Daily Beast when he said, "It puts you on the map and makes your career, so to speak. But that's a one-off, so you've got to follow it up with something. Fortunately, those movies kept coming, and Apollo Creed became more and more in people's consciousness and welcomed in their lives, and it was just the right guy at the right time."

The news outlet announced that Weathers died on February 1st, 2024, at 76. Weathers' manager and family said he died peacefully in his sleep.

Weathers, an Emmy award nominee actor, and former professional football player was a pioneer for many and launched a successful acting career after suffering a sports injury. The New Orleans native's career began when he played for the Oakland

" I COULDN'T HAVE MADE IT WITHOUT HIM. WE LOST A LEGEND. MY LIFE WAS FOREVER CHANGED FOR THE BETTER THE DAY I MET CARL WEATHERS. "

Raiders in the early 1970s and also had a stint in the Canadia Football League. Weathers decided to play football because it was a different outlet than any other sport. He appreciated the sport's physicality and being clever while studying playbooks to familiarize himself with the opposition before a game. However, four years later, Weathers made a bold decision and retired from football to start an acting career.

Before Weathers starred in the Rocky movie franchise alongside Stallone, he also appeared in two blaxploitation films, Bucktown and Friday Foster, to attract a black audience and pay homage to Western and kung fu genres. His

portfolio became more diverse after being featured in action movies, Not This Time, Force 10 from Navarone, Action Jackson, Hurricane Smith, and Predator with California former governor and actor Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jesse Ventura. In the 80s, he appeared in Michael Jackson's music video for the song "Liberian Girl."

Weathers continued to evolve as an actor throughout the '90s and 2000s, but he took time aside to be a voiceover artist and createRed Tight Media, a production company. The company makes training videos for the U.S. Army and has been featured in several commercials, including Old Spice, Credit Union of Washington, and Bud Light.

Legendary actor and comedian Adam Sandler shared his fondest words about Weathers after working together in the 1996 classics Happy Gilmore as a golf instructor and Little Nicky. Sandler described him best when he said, "A truly great man, great dad, great actor, great athlete, so much fun to be around always, love to his entire family, and Carl will always be known as a true legend."
