After four years post-Trump, global pandemic, two wars and Bennifer breakup #2, the world is finally getting back to normal. But, what is normal? Were things ever the way they were supposed to be? It’s getting harder and harder to remember the world before 2020. In some ways, things are exactly how they used to be: all work, no time for family, friends and personal time. On the other hand, it is a brand new world order.
Trying to make sense of it all gives me a headache. So, I try not to think too hard. Just subtle glimpses into what I remember. Selectively choosing all the good and tossing the not-so-good like a used COVID-19 mask. We had a chance as a society to get a do-over and choose the best of who we could be. Instead, most, including myself, rushed to revert to normal life. Gone are my morning walks in the park, Zoom birthday parties, learning new recipes and going months without shaving.
I can’t wonder if it is too late to even attempt to go back to the way it was. We went too far back. Life wasn’t actually great before the pandemic. It wasn’t terrible either. But the chance to make it better was right in our hands, and we sanitized it away. So, here I am. It's Friday night, and I’m in the office working like it's 2019.

SUBARU WRX
THE NEWEST POWERHOUSE PERFORMER
By Rachael Hanmer
In the world of performance cars, Subaru has introduced its latest highperformance spectacle, the 2024 Subaru WRX. Representing a fusion of sport and rally legacy, this vehicle has honored and evolved past its roots. Merging astounding performance with refined handling, the WRX has crafted an identity of its own, despite its familial similarity with the Subaru Impreza. Let’s explore and expand into what makes this newest addition to the Subaru family a powerhouse in its own right.
POWER AND PERFORMANCE
Under the hood, the WRX is driven by a robust 271-horsepower turbocharged 2.4-liter flatfour engine, capable of producing 258 pound-feet of torque. This power is channeled to all four wheels via either a six-speed manual or a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). Despite enthusiasts often favoring manual transmissions for their engaging driving experience, it’s notable that the CVT variant is marginally quicker, achieving 0-60 mph in 5.4 seconds compared to the manual’s 5.5 seconds. This slight edge, however, doesn’t overshadow the sheer joy of the manual gearbox, which continues to be a favorite among purists.
ENHANCED DYNAMICS AND HANDLING
Showcasing appreciation for its tuner-friendly past, Subaru’s WRX TR model installs factory-fitted performance upgrades to distinguish the new model. This top-tier variant features Brembo brakes, stiffer springs, a retuned steering rack, Bridgestone Potenza S007 tires, and Recaro seats, all standard. These refinements ameliorate road manners, cornering agility and stopping power, aiding the WRX to be a formidable contender on bending roads and tracks alike. Refinement of the WRX enables a level of sophistication whilst balancing sporty responsiveness and everyday comfort with the WRX’s upgraded suspension. A smooth ride is maintained throughout this refinement, ensuring driver performance is not sacrificed.
FUEL EFFICIENCY
Despite its performance capabilities, the WRX does not neglect fuel efficiency. According to EPA ratings, the manual transmission variant delivers 22 mpg combined and the CVT version offers 21 mpg combined. Real-world application and trialing align closely with these figures, with both transmission options achieving 28 mpg on a 75-mph highway fuel economy route. Remaining attractive and practical to all vehicle users, whether a spirited driver or daily commuters, the WRX strikes an equilibrium between potency and efficiency.
INTERIOR AND TECHNOLOGY
Interiorly, the WRX showcases the culmination of sports design and modern technology. The cabin features carbon-fiber-like accents and red contrast stitching; these small details unify the car’s overall design. A thick-rimmed, flat-bottomed steering wheel and analog gauges exaggerate the car’s athleticism. The higher trims come equipped with heavily bolstered Recaro front seats laced in microsuede, securing comfort and support during
INTENSIVE DRIVING SESSIONS
Infotainment requirements are met by an original touchscreen system, with base models exhibiting a 7.0-inch display and higher trims featuring a vertically oriented 11.6-inch screen. This system features Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, warranting seamless smartphone integration. Additionally, an 11-speaker HarmanKardon sound system is available for an augmented audio experience.
SAFETY AND DRIVER-ASSISTANCE FEATURES
Awarded a five-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2024 WRX epitomizes security. Optional driver assistance incorporates forward-collision warning, automated emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control features. Starting at $32,735, the WRX ensures you get a bang for your buck.
CONCLUSION
A machine of performance, power, and prowess, the 2024 Subaru WRX is an exemplar of pinnacle automotive engineering. Whether you engage with the manual transmission or the marginally swifter CVT, the WRX appeals to both spirited driving enthusiasts and everyday users. Elevating the WRX’s performance credentials with the TR model, Subaru guarantees it remains a standout in the competitive sport compact segment. For those seeking a car that delivers thrills without compromising on comfort or practicality, the WRX is a compelling choice.
WEARABLE
TECH
By Catherine McGrath
Increasingly, it feels like we are living in Steven Speilberg’s version of the future. Between Tesla’s driverless cars and AI-powered dating apps, futuristic technology has never been so ingrained in our everyday lives. And nothing is more futuristic than wearable tech. While Iron Man’s full-body armor is not available for purchase yet, things like in-ear translators and live streaming sunglasses have become a reality, solving problems we’ve dealt with for millennia. Below are some of the most useful (and cool) wearable technologies for non-robots.
RAY-BAN META SMART GLASSES
In September of last year, Meta and Ray-Ban released their most recent generation of smart glasses. The discreet camera hidden within the glasses’ frames makes this product a must-have for James Bond wannabes. The glasses, available in three different frame styles, offer wearers the ability to snap photos, chat with Meta AI, call friends, listen to music, and live stream with immediacy. Despite the impressive number of features, including its HD camera, capture button, power button, and open-ear speakers, the glasses are surprisingly sleek. This product is not just for the summer months, as they can also be made to fit your prescription. Connect the glasses to your smartphone through the Meta View app and begin capturing the world through your own eyes… or better yet, spy on your neighbor from the comfort of your shades.
LIMITLESS’ PENDANT
Limitless, formerly known as Rewind, announced their new AIpowered pendant last month. The lightweight wearable records transcribes and summarizes meetings and conversations you have throughout the day. The idea, however chilling, has the potential to revolutionize your workflow. With one click you begin recording the meeting in platforms like Zoom, Slack, Google Meet, and others. Tap the pendant anytime you want to remember something, and it will bookmark the moment in the final transcript. Press and hold the pendant to ask your personal AI specific questions about meeting details, and it will retrieve the answer for you. Compatible with both Mac and PC, the pendant lasts up to 100 hours, and offers high-level data encryption. How would it feel to never have to take meeting notes again?
KINEKT DESIGNS
If you’re in search of less techy and meticulously curated gadgets, look no further than Kinekt Designs. This small company is dedicated to designing innovative jewelry and other products. Renowned for its Gear Ring, Kinekt Designs offers a diverse range of tantalizing metal gadgets, each serving a unique purpose. The Gear Ring, made of stainless steel, provides wearers with a fidget toy and a fashion statement in one. The spinning contraption is perfect for those who struggle to sit still or fidget with their fingers. Additionally, Kinekt Designs offers a more delicate option known as the Rachel Ring, featuring floral motifs instead of gears while retaining the same interactive design. Both jewelry pieces are priced at $100 and are available in multiple colors. Furthermore, the company also offers click-clacking necklaces, a propeller ring, and a spiritual googly eye bracelet.
VASCO TRANSLATOR
Language barriers often can be overcome with the use of Google Translate, but real-time translation technology is hard to come by. However, a company called Vasco recently announced a new product that could change that. They are developing a pair of earbuds that can translate 49 different languages as you converse. In real-time, the Vasco Translator E1 can pick up your conversation, identify the spoken language, and translate it directly into your ear. The set, which has not yet been released, is also compatible with previous Vasco translators and can connect to an app on your smartphone. Now, you can have a bilingual conversation with up to 10 people using the mobile app. These earbuds will revolutionize many aspects of communication, including conversations with family abroad, international work meetings, and vacations in foreign countries.

FILMMAKER
NASIR KENNETH FEREBEE
infuses Black queer love stories with "tenderness and simplicity" through his film
YOUR LOVE IS KING.
" LOVE IS LOVE. LOVE CAN BE TENDER. LOVE TAKES WORK. "
By Truth Hawkins
" I WANTED IT TO HAVE A LEVEL OF TENDERNESS AND SIMPLICITY."
Nasir Kenneth Ferebee is not just another name in the world of film production; he's a force to be reckoned with.
Growing up, Ferebee was drawn to the world of film and television, thanks to the influence of his family and the wide range of content he consumed. "I was a kid that was really heavy into TV," he recalls. "My grandmother, my mother, my aunt, and I, we would watch TV together, so we would watch everything.” His early exposure to diverse programming, from classics like "Saved by the Bell" and “Adventures in Babysitting,” to gritty films like Boyz n the Hood, ignited a passion for storytelling that would shape his future.
As a young adult, Ferebee found himself at a crossroads, unsure of his path forward. It wasn't until he volunteered on a short student film in community college that he experienced a moment of clarity.
"I just got it," he reflects. "Like, it just clicked. I felt like I belonged. I knew what I was doing felt very natural — it was a lightbulb moment." This revelation set him on a trajectory towards pursuing a career in film and media arts.
Ferebee's journey took a significant leap forward when he transferred to Temple University to study film and media arts. There, he honed his skills and gained valuable
experience through internships, including stints at MTV and the Philadelphia Film Office. These early opportunities provided him with the foundation he needed to thrive in the industry and ultimately identify his lane.
After graduating from Temple, Ferebee wasted no time diving headfirst into the industry, securing the role of “PA at VH1 on April 30th, 2007," where he gained invaluable hands-on experience and industry connections.
Over the years, Ferebee's hard work and dedication paid off, earning him accolades like his recent Emmy nomination for a PSA entitled "They Think The Know You.” But for Ferebee, success is not just about personal achievements; it's about telling stories that matter. His latest project, Your Love Is King is an exemplification of this ethos. The short film, a Black queer love story devoid of dialogue, aims to showcase the tender complexities of love and relationships.
"I felt like we didn't really see any Black queer love stories where sex was taken out of it," Ferebee explains. "I wanted it to have a level of tenderness and simplicity." He adds, “So it's about a couple who's been together for a year, and they just had their first big major disagreement. And, now they're both trying to figure out how to reconcile.
“One of the partners comes to the door with flowers, they work through it, and the door closes. It's very beautiful and simple.” According to Freebee, the project was originally created for the one-minute Outfest Fusion Festival. However, he ended up with surplus footage and thought, "Hey, I believe I can expand this further." Consequently, he extended it to three minutes in length.
Overall, with Your Love Is King, Ferebee hopes to challenge traditional narratives and shine a spotlight on underrepresented voices in the industry. “I'd say the goal is that love is love. Love can be tender. Love also takes work. It takes effort. It takes vulnerability. It takes, you know, letting your guard down and allowing someone to see you and being transparent. And, like any relationship, it requires you to keep showing up.”
When asked about his advice for aspiring filmmakers, Ferebee emphasizes the importance of faith, hard work, and strategic planning. "You really have to be relentless in this industry," he advises. "Approach things with strategy and intention."
“You have to really have unshakable faith. You have to
almost be delusional. You have to be delusional to be like, ‘I'm going to go to LA and I'm only going to know — in my case — I'm only going to know two people, and I'm going to figure this out. And I'm going to break into the industry, and I'm going to hustle hard to figure this out.’”
“You have to have a lot of faith and tenacity to do that,” he exclaims. So, have faith, do the work, get your turn, be patient, have strategy and intention, and execute.”
Looking ahead, Ferebee shows no signs of slowing down. With multiple projects in the pipeline (he typically has ten projects in motion at a time), including a narrative short film and a feature documentary, he's poised to make an even bigger impact in the years to come. "This next chapter is definitely like chapter three of my career," he reflects. Prepare to get sick of me."
Indeed, with Nasir Kenneth Ferebee at the helm, the future of filmmaking looks brighter than ever. From his humble beginnings as a kid with a passion for storytelling to his current status as a rising star in the industry, Ferebee's journey is a testament to the power of perseverance, passion, and unwavering faith.

Magical Moorea
WHY YOU NEED TO GET MAROONED ON THIS FRENCH POLYNESIAN ISLE
By Becca Blond
There are few places on this planet as dreamy as Moorea, a magical French Polynesian island perfect for a marooned-in-paradise vacation. One of 118 isles in the South Pacific spread across an area larger than Europe, Moorea is where you come to spend days lazing on white sand beaches and snorkeling in a translucent turquoise lagoon.
This is exactly what I am doing as I climb down my overwater bungalow’s ladder into the warm sea. Within seconds of putting my head under the water, the view through my snorkel mask fills with a school of electric blue fish swimming past me. Looking down, I see the waving tentacles of a sea anemone and two clownfish playing hide-and-seek within. Swimming out further into the vibrant-hued coral reef, I pass a small, black-tipped reef shark. The ocean is thriving here, and I am in awe.
The view above the surface is as mesmerizing as the one below. Moorea is a lush green island with impressive deep blue bays and soaring volcanic peaks. The air is fragrant with the floral scents of the multitude of exotic tropical flowers that flourish here. If you’ve never been to French Polynesia before, now is the time to visit. From the West Coast, it is easier to reach than much of the Caribbean, and it is nearly as close as Hawaii, but with a vibe all its own.
HOW TO GET TO MOOREA
SOFITEL KIA ORA MOOREA RESORT IS THE BEST PLACE TO STAY
Tahiti is the main island in French Polynesia, where all international flights arrive. Bora Bora is the most famous of the islands in this French foreign territory, featured in dozens of movies. But Moorea offers beauty and overwater bungalow experiences that are on par with Bora Bora at a much lower price tag.
Direct flights to Tahiti on United Airlines and Air Tahiti Nui from Los Angeles and San Francisco make getting there easy. The flight is a quick 8 hours, and once you arrive in French Polynesia, you’ll be in the same time zone as Hawaii (depending on the time of year, this is as little as two hours behind PST). Upon landing in Tahiti, your hotel will arrange transport. From the airport, you’ll take a taxi to the ferry terminal. It is then a 30-minute ride to Moorea.
I loved my stay at the Sofitel Kia Ora Moorea Resort, which mixes chic luxury and French Polynesian charm and is the perfect spot for a honeymoon or any sort of romantic getaway. That said, it also works great for families and groups of friends. Moorea doesn’t have the extensive, luxury-branded resort development seen in Bora Bora, and the Sofitel is the most exclusive property on the island.
If you've always dreamed of staying in an overwater bungalow – fun fact: the concept was invented on the nearby island of Raiatea in 1967 –the Sofitel has a string of these fantasy suites strung over the azure lagoon to book. If you’ve never stayed in an overwater bungalow, I recommend booking one for at least part of your visit. Besides ladders into the sea, the Sofitel’s overwater bungalows, designed in traditional Polynesian style, feature square glass viewing panels in the polished wood floor to watch the marine life below.
If you want to save a few hundred dollars per night, garden and beach-view bungalows are nearly as lovely. You'll still have access to the same fish-filled sea and snorkeling; you’ll just enter from shore rather than a ladder.
The destination resort has an onsite dive center and can arrange all your island activities. Guests can access free snorkeling equipment, SUP boards, and kayaks throughout their stay. There are two restaurants.
The main restaurant, Pure, and bar face the lagoon, and the complimentary breakfast buffet will fuel you until mid-afternoon. You’ll find a mix of classic Tahitian fare like poisson cru (raw tuna, coconut milk, lime, and vegetables) and international staples like pizza, pasta, meat, and seafood options for lunch and dinner.
K Restaurant is Sofitel’s romantic culinary experience. Open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday evenings, it offers a Frenchinfluenced tasting menu with an expert wine
pairing. Dine with your feet in the sand under a ceiling made from local wood.
Also, don’t miss a visit to Le Jardin Spa. It uses natural ingredients grown on the property in its treatments, which include everything from activating and toning massages to lymphatic drainage, foot reflexology, and facials.
FROM SCUBA DIVING TO ATV TOURS: ADVENTURING ON MOOREA
From world-class diving and jet-skiing to ATV tours and waterfall hikes, Moorea offers diverse adventure experiences that can quickly fill a weeklong holiday. I like to start my trips with a lagoon immersion in the form of a private boat tour excursion. These make a few different snorkeling stops, and giving you a chance to swim with
stingrays, gentle, black-tipped reef sharks, and often sea turtles. Lunch is usually on a private island, where you’ll dine on fresh fish at a table where you can swing your feet in the sea. Other fun ocean-focused activities include jet-ski tours, night snorkeling, and snuba.
A favorite way to explore Moorea’s lush inland beauty is on an ATV tour. After a quick driving intro, you’ll ride off the island’s ring road around stunning Opunohu Bay before climbing to Moorea’s most famous panoramic view at the Belvedere Lookout. The second part of the tour takes you through pineapple fields and into the center of the volcano that formed Moorea. At the village of Papetoai entrance, you’ll follow a track to the top of “Magic Mountain,” offering more stunning views of the sparkling lagoon, verdant valleys, and craggy peaks. Also, check with the Sofitel about waterfall hiking excursions.

HE IS THE RANGE
By Chris Lawrence
From viral internet moments to vocals that shift the musical paradigm, Durand Bernarr is more than an artist, he’s a movement.
" OH MY GOD, THIS IS WHAT I’M SUPPOSED TO BE DOING. "
Can I play it? He asks earnestly before launching into a bit of laughter. He gets up and retrieves his speaker (yes, he brought his own speaker to the shoot).
“Thank God I Ain't White” by Daddy plays. The lyrics go, “Thank God I ain’t white. I can say nigga. Nigga, nigga, nigga, yeah, I’m black. My jaw drops. I’ve never heard this song before, and he can tell. He laughs even more.
It’s a rainy Monday afternoon in Los Angeles, a trend for the West Coast city as of late. I've had the beautiful privilege of interviewing the ray of sunshine that is Durand Bernarr. He enters the studio wearing a long tweed jacket, a T-shirt, jeans, and a newsboy cap. His signature long earrings with a charm are on display. Bernarr, who often refers to himself as “your favorite cousin on your daddy’s side,” is for sure telling the truth. As evidenced by my reaction to meeting him, I immediately go in for a cousinly hug instead of my usual professional handshake.
His answer is in response to a little icebreaker I’ve created. I’ve taken his music titles and created questions related to them. His great answer was in response to “Melody, what’s a song that you recorded or a song that’s currently stuck in your head?”
Keeping it a stack, Bernarr probably could have answered with
any of his own songs. His knack for melody, infectious harmonies, and not-everybody-can-do runs is one of the reasons he’s been such an anticipated voice. His latest project, “En Route," is R&B at its finest. In a world where the genre has seen an influx of earworms and trite lyrics, it’s nice that Bernarr can dulcify the mix a bit. His current single, “Fist Bump,” is a playful, groovy record about showing love to someone while avoiding getting makeup on your shirt.
As the only child born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, Bernarr was born into a musical family. His mother is a professional music teacher and vocal coach, and his dad is an audio engineer who has worked with Beyonce, Rihanna, and Whitney Houston, to name a few. However, Bernarr is not a Nepo baby; he is, in fact, a theater kid with deep roots in vocal ability, music composition, performance, comedy, and fashion, respectively.
You’ve heard his guest vocals on songs with Anderson Paak, The Internet, and Kaytranda. You’ve seen him perform background vocals for Erykah Badu. You’ve definitely seen his Tiny Desk performance, which has amassed over 1.5 million views on YouTube. And if you’re lucky, you’ve seen him perform live at a festival. But you’ve never seen him like this before. Read below to learn more about him and get into it.
" I NEVER FELT THE NECESSITY TO LABEL SOMETHING. I WILL ACKNOWLEDGE A PREFERENCE FOR WHAT WE LIKE AT THAT TIME OR WHAT GETS US GOING. "
BLEU: Alright, we’re going to go a little deeper.
DURAND BERNARR: That’s what she said—not to me, but that’s what I heard she said.
BLEU: When did you know you could sing? When did you know you wanted to pursue it?
BERNARR: The moment I knew I had something going on was when I was about 11 or 12. I was singing at one of the churches my mom did praise and worship at. I sang that “I believe I can fly.” Everybody was singing. I remember, at the end, I sang (he sings), “I can believe I can fly!” and I held it as long as I could. The audience went up, and I was like, “Oh my god, this is what I’m supposed to be doing.”
BLEU: Tell me a little bit about your approach to music.
BERNARR: As far as writing, it really can come to me at any moment. I can be in the car, I can be having a conversation, and I have to go to the notes app to make sure I write it down. I try not to force it if it’s not coming out right then and there. Lately, I’ve been bringing other people in just so that I can fine-tune things in real time. I just did a record with Syd [from the Internet]. There were certain melody ideas I had, and had I been by myself, I probably would have second-guessed myself. To have someone there to work with me in real time... I don’t want to write or complete any more songs without someone else there to bounce off ideas.
BLEU: What can you tell us about the new project?
BERNARR: I don’t know who told me to work on four projects all at once. One is a live album. One is a studio album. This third studio project is the last installment of an R&Besque project, at least intentionally. I've been inspired by new age, rock, gospel—I mean, all of that stuff. Dur& was me—pre-therapy, Wanderlust was Durand—in therapy—these are all of the things I’m learning about and I’m sharing with y’all. En Route is the result of doing that. I wanted to give people three things they could study: breath control, arrangements, and how you can compose things, subject matter, and all of that. After that, we’re going to switch gears, and I’m going to do a rock album.
BLEU: You mention therapy, which is a word that gets thrown around a lot lately. What was the deciding factor for you to start? Are you still in therapy?
BERNARR: I had a few unofficial therapists growing up. Those were the elders–people who worked with Toni Braxton and Usher. People like Badu and B-Slade, who weren't selfish with their knowledge. In 2020, I went to a professional; I just did it because I wanted to see if any of my behaviors were due to who I am or if they were trauma responses. I became the plug for not only therapy but for people who were looking for a Black therapist.
BLEU: Are you still in therapy?
BERNARR: MMHM!!! Absolutely. That’s almost like saying... “Are you still going to the doctor?” I like to check under the hood and make sure everything’s good!
BLEU: You seem very at home on stage—it seems effortless. How do you prepare for performances?
BERNARR: Rest. That’s really the main thing. As long as I can rest and be nourished, I’m good. I only eat when I’m hungry. Three meals a day is a scam, and I’ll stand ten toes on that.
BLEU: There’s always talk of R&B being dead, which I feel like you disprove. What are your thoughts on the state of music today?
BERNARR: Music is always changing, but it also goes back at the same time. When our parents and grandparents were listening to songs in the ‘90s that were sampled from the '60s and ‘70s,. They were like, “What the fuck is this?” Now we’ve grown up, and they are sampling the sample! So we get it now. I hate when people say they don’t make “real music." First of all, what is real music?. I think when you’re talking about a certain quality of music, if you are looking for live instrumentation, you have to find it. That’s why streaming services make it so easy for people to put their music out. You don’t need a label; it’s all about word-ofmouth. I mean, I like the music I listen to! That’s another reason why I wanted to start DJing—so people could get into what I’m jamming to. A lot of people don’t know what they need.
BLEU: What do you like to do in your free time?
BERNARR: I’m on the couch eating sunflower seeds–Frito Lay in the green bag, not David’s, not pumpkin seeds. Save the BBQ, save the ranch–original only. I’m practicing on my DJ board, I’m recording, and I’m napping. I’m a people person; I’m an ambivert. I love being around people, but I also love being quiet.
BLEU: As far as your personal life, is there anything you’d like to put out there? From a dating perspective?
BERNARR: I wish I was dating, like, for real. But I’m not. I’ve been leaning into my tribe and village. I’m learning new ways to fall in love with my friends. I’m open to it. Keeping my eyes peeled for something
BLEU: What does that mean for you?
BERNARR: Uh…
BLEU: Now I feel like I’m on a different couch. Like, what does that mean to you.? [mimics TV show host]
BERNARR: Someone who understands that I belong to the world and to no one else at the same time, except myself. There’s a certain level of security, and someone has their own world to cultivate so that they're not looking to the relationship for validation or completion. I want us to be an addition to each other.
BLEU: You’ve been very open about your sexuality, which a lot of people aren’t. Why was that a decision you made, and what advice would you give others who don’t have the courage to do so?
BERNARR: I was just being myself, whoever that was at that time. I never felt the necessity to label something. I will acknowledge a preference for what we like at that time or what gets us going. But for the most part, it’s just me. I like to say I added an additional letter to the “Leguhbidjuquois” community, which is F for Fuck around and find out sexually. I don’t know what I’m like until I see it. So hopefully that inspires people to not feel pressured.
BLEU: You’ve tweeted and written about trust > love. Talk a little about that.
BURNARR: There was a quote that I found a little over 10 years ago on Tumblr. It said, “I would rather trust than love because you might not always trust the person that you love, but you’ll always love the person that you trust.” That really resonated with me.
BLEU: Do you have a dream team or a dream list of people you want to work with?
BERNARR: I would love to do something with Donald Glover or Childish Gambino, like some acting shit and some music. I think that would be amazing. Tyler, the Creator. Tierra Whack. I would like to do something with Katt Williams. I don’t know what that would look like, but he's hilarious. Solange. Janelle Monae. I’d love to open for Beyonce or Rihanna. Writers, I’d like to get in there with Ester Dean. Hell, can Diane Warren write me something? Can Babyface? I want some heavy hitters.
BLEU: I have a list, actually.
BENRARR: C’mon!
BLEU: I had Diane Warren. Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.
BERNARR: Yes! Duh. I just met them.
BLEU: I have D'Mile.
BERNARR: Yes, I just met them. You’re naming all the people I just met. I’d also love Muni Long to give me something.
BLEU: Some artists have taglines or monikers, some that were given to them and others they created for themselves. Tell me the significance or where you came up with "everybody’s favorite cousin on they daddy's side”.
BURNARR: That came from Mel. She be calling me the Prince of the Juice Joint. We talk about how The Juice Joint and Crock Pot are like this big family reunion—everybody is your favorite cousin, and it’s a family affair. And there’s truth to it, because I really am everybody’s favorite cousin on they daddy’s side.
BLEU: If someone had not heard of you before, how would you describe your music?
BERNARR: Outside of it being an auditory adventure, I always say if Rick James and Erykah Badu got into a car accident and Little Richard witnessed the whole thing (he laughs).
" I WISH I WAS DATING, LIKE, FOR REAL. BUT I’M NOT. I’VE BEEN LEANING INTO MY TRIBE AND VILLAGE. "

THE POSH DAY PARTY EXPERIENCE
HOW A BACKYARD BIRTHDAY PARTY BECAME A CELEBRITY-FILLED CELEBRATION By Kent Olden
GET READY
WITH me. We’re going to a party. It’s not just any party, though. This is the premier party of the season. Everything is VIP and top shelf with good times and great vibes. No stress, no worries, no cares. Just you, your people, and the memories that y’all make. It’s the POSH Day Party, and it’s all courtesy of ExecEventz.
Founded by Damien Gilyard and his best friend Jay, the POSH Day Party experience was born out of the pair hosting parties in the backyard. From kickbacks to barbecues to get-togethers with friends, it was a birthday party for Jay that made the duo start to seriously think about where they could take their talents. “We started doing that around 2015, 2016, and there wasn’t a lot going on in New York City,” says Gilyard, remembering how ExecEventz and the POSH Day Party were birthed. “We started having birthday parties and just regular parties in the backyard, and before we knew it, all of these people started coming out and having a good time. They kept saying, ‘Y’all should throw parties, y’all should throw parties,’ so Damien and Jay decided to listen. “I remember seeing the crowd for Jay’s birthday party — like, I still have videos of it — and I remember saying, ‘Oh…we should throw parties.’”
Taking their partygoers’ suggestions seriously, the duo tapped into their own passion for putting on a good show and their power to bring out the people en masse. Fueled by the fact that the LGBTQ community deserved an elevated experience that they could enjoy, Damien and Jay decided to try a little hocus pocus in 2017. “We decided to have a Halloween party at the Pepsi Cola House,” says Gilyard. “It was a success. From then on, the rest is what you see now.”
our goal. We want people to leave and say, ‘Oh, I wanna come back to this!’” Fresh off the success of the 2023 tour — with the Toronto (ring Caribana Weekend) and Dallas (during Juneteenth) events noted as the most influential — The POSH Day Party 2024 Tour has been in full swing since January, ready to go even higher. “We’re creating this space where people can feel safe. They can come and have unmatched vibes from any other party they’ve been to,” Gilyard says. “They can come in and be who they are in the LGBT community. This is something where people in these cities keep wanting us to come back.” So much so that the POSH Day Party Tour has made quite a name for itself, building an influencer following that’s influential in its own right.
“Doing these parties for our community naturally built our following, and with that comes some notable behind-the-scenes regulars in the entertainment industry,” says Gilyard. “Hairdressers, stylists, makeup artists, and managers of certain artists.” Oftentimes, these attendees bring their clients with them, who are very impressed and want to come back themselves. The Posh Day Party even counts Sexxy Red among its celebrity performers, leaving the founders in awe.
" DOING THESE PARTIES FOR OUR COMMUNITY NATURALLY BUILT OUR
"
That Halloween party gave way to the creation of the ExecEventz signature POSH Day Party. Now running annual tours, the POSH Day Party caters to what the community has been calling for, with every detail meticulously combed through to ensure that each and every event is as executive as possible. “The POSH Day Party Tour that we threw in 2023 was amazing,” says Gilyard. “We created an elevated experience, going from city to city, and every time we left a city, people were asking us to come right back. And that’s always
In the world of LGBTQ events, the POSH Day Party experience takes great pride in bringing premier quality to the community. “We kicked off this year at MLK Weekend in Atlanta, and each stop on this tour is gonna kick it up another notch every time.” New cities added to the 2024 lineup include Chicago, New Orleans, and Paris, France. As part of the 2024 tour, Damien and Jay will be donating partial proceeds to the Rainbow Railroad, a Toronto-based nonprofit focused on assisting LGBTQ+ people find sanctuary from the hatefueled violence that so many endure. “We went from throwing parties in the backyard to hosting events at some of the top venues across the globe,” says Gilyard. “Now we’re ready to take this influence and use it to leave a lasting impact on the world.”

ARRINGTON FOSTER
A LOOK INSIDE THE ACTOR’S LIFE DURING THE SAG-AFTRA STRIKE
BETS THE FAMILY BUSINESS STAR ARRINGTON FOSTER OPENS UP ABOUT THE REALITIES OF BEING AN UP-AND-COMING ACTOR AND HIS EXPERIENCES THROUGHOUT THE 2023 SAG-AFTRA STRIKE.
By Blair Thompson
ON JULY 14, 2023, Hollywood came to a standstill when the American actors’ union, Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA), went on strike over a labor dispute with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP).
SAG-AFTRA joined in solidarity with the Writers Guild of America (WGA), who had been negotiating with the AMPTP over pay, streaming residuals, and the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to be used as a tool for research purposes and not as a tool to replace writers. The 2023 WGA strike began on May 2, after their previous contract expired the day before.
Similar to the demands of WGA, SAG-AFTRA cited several issues in
negotiations including economic fairness, residuals, regulating the use of artificial intelligence, and alleviating the burdens of the industry-wide shift to self-taping.
As part of the rules established, actors couldn’t engage in film or television productions and couldn’t take part in promotional work, such as press junkets, film premieres, and events.
“The writer’s strike didn’t really affect me personally, but when SAG went on strike, that’s what did it for me and every actor in the union,” said actor Arrington Foster who began filming Season 5 of The Family Business on BET in June 2023. The series is an American crime family drama, created by Carl Weber and based on his best-selling crime drama
book series that follows the Duncans, an upstanding family who run a car dealership by day. By night, they live a dangerous secret life. After a month and a half of filming, production halted when SAG-AFTRA announced it would be joining the WGA in solidarity by going on strike.
“It’s scary because this is my livelihood. This is my job. So not knowing what was going on was scary,” Foster said.
Golden Globe Award winner Taraji P. Henson, who’s also part of the union, opened up about her thoughts on the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes. “Greed is going to be the end of humanity. Henson said in a statement to USA Today. The Color Purple actress continued, “And the things that actors are asking for is common sense. You can’t use my likeness and get paid, and I don’t see anything? That’s highway robbery. And for any studio to think that that’s fair. It’s beyond like I don’t even understand. Are you human? Do you care about the livelihood of artists?”
Like the COVID-19 pandemic, Foster didn’t know how long the strike would last and many working actors struggled to make ends meet. Foster, who also works as a bellman, weathered the strike working at an Atlanta hotel.
The 33-year-old actor moved to Atlanta from Los Angeles last Spring, a few months before the SAG-AFTRA strike began. With a major film and television presence including Tyler Perry Studios, Turner Studios, Trillith Studios, and Blackhall Studios, Atlanta is offering more opportunities for actors than ever before. Often referred to as “Black Hollywood”, Atlanta has a thriving black entertainment industry that’s becoming more attractive to up-and-coming artists like Foster. According to NerdWallet, Atlanta’s cost of living is also 9 percent cheaper than Los Angeles.
“It’s not all roses. I mean, Yes, I’m very blessed. I’m very grateful for how far I’ve come. But this is just the beginning,” Foster said.
While many working actors may feel embarrassed having side jobs, Foster says he wants his story to inspire others.
“That’s the misconception that actors like Taraji [P. Henson] and the strike have allowed non-actors to see; that many actors are not rich. We’re far from it. The 1% of the union are the ones earning top-grossing dollars,” Foster said. “You can’t even apply for health insurance unless you make a certain amount of money,” he added.
Fran Drescher, the president of SAG-AFTRA, says 86% of the union's members could not meet the $26,500 a year threshold to get their medical benefits.
Many people believe Hollywood actors are high-paid celebrities, but many of them are not. According to an analysis by the Department of Labor Data, the average yearly salary for actors is $65,125. That number reflects the average earnings of all actors, from the lowest to the highest paid.
Foster worked as a bellman during the strike, and many fans recognized him. However, he mentioned he never felt ashamed because he was able to highlight the realities of being an actor and the importance of the SAG-AFTRA strike.
In October 2023, Foster learned the first four seasons of The Family Business were available on Netflix. This garnered mixed feelings for Foster: on one hand, the show peaked at #6 on the streaming platform and was introduced to a wider audience. On the other hand, SAGAFTRA was fighting for streaming residuals for actors.
On November 8, 2023, SAG-AFTRA released a statement to its
members that announced the end of the strike.
“We have arrived at a contract that will enable SAG-AFTRA members from every category to build sustainable careers,” the union said in the email. “Many thousands of performers now and into the future will benefit from this work.”
Foster says he’s happy with the results of the union’s new contract.
“At the end of the day we’re artists, and we just want to get paid fairly for what we love to do,” Foster said. He continued, “When they were talking about rumors of AI, I was just so turned off because robots can’t tell stories. They don’t have hearts. They don’t have feelings.”
Foster added, “The strike didn’t just affect us. It affected writers, hair stylists, make-up artists, directors, producers, choreographers, dancers, it impacted a lot of people.” He continued, “I’m just happy to work and be back at work. We have to make sure that we’re moving in a good direction so that 4 months of being on strike wasn’t for nothing.”
The contract provides that actors immediately receive a 7% wage increase. The initial pay raise will be followed by a 4% increase on July 1, 2024, and a 3.5% increase on July 1, 2025.
For streaming projects, along with the usual residual payments, the new contract calls for actors to receive a “success payment” if they work on streaming projects that attract a significant number of viewers
Under the new agreement, 75% of any bonus money will go to the performer. The remainder will go into a new streaming payment distribution fund to compensate performers who work on streaming shows. Moving forward, this means streaming producers will be required to disclose the total number of hours the content was streamed in the U.S., Canada, and abroad each quarter. The intention is to provide transparency to actors and help them determine if they’re being fairly compensated relative to the show’s distribution and success.
The new labor contract also establishes limits on artificial intelligence by requiring film and TV producers to obtain consent from actors to create and use their digital replicas. They must also specify their intention to use actors' digital likenesses. If their digital replica is used, actors are entitled to compensation at their usual rate for the number of days they would otherwise have been paid to do the work being performed by their digital copy.
After the end of the strike, Foster returned to set to film the rest of the fifth season of The Family Business.
Foster plays Rio Duncan, one of the youngest children of the Duncan clan who’s willing to do whatever he can to prove to his father that he deserves the same respect as his brothers.
Like his character, Foster is part of the LGBTQ+ community and opened up about the importance of representation in television and film.
“You don’t see that type of character on a black show too often, so the fact that this character has resonated with a lot of people, or they have a Rio in their family, it means the world to me,” Foster said.
As for Season 5, Foster says audiences can expect more of Rio, with more screen time than previous seasons.
“This upcoming season, Rio has a storyline and arc that’s extraordinary,” Foster said. “It’s crazy and exciting. You’re going to see more levels of Rio. Him being a boss and taking his power. I think I get to show more of my acting chops too.”
Season 5 of The Family Business premieres in July 2024.
While Foster’s show was able to resume filming following the SAG-AFTRA strike, many shows didn’t have the same fate. The actor says he’s grateful to get back to work immediately following the strike because many actors didn’t have the opportunity due to their shows being canceled. The strike may have temporarily stalled Foster’s career, but its results will hopefully offer him a sustainable living wage to focus on acting full-time.
NO HOMO
REDEFINING MASCULINITY IN HIP-HOP
I AM A 90s hip-hop head through and through. During that era, a rapper's pen was their sword. It was part of the code to be ready to pick up the mic and slay any MC who dared to step into the arena. I love Hip-Hop. Pause. Today, as a middle-aged Black Puerto Rican man, I find it hard to love hip-hop. As a high school and college-age boy, I made excuses for hip-hop even though I was keenly aware that parts of hip-hop didn't love me back.
Hip-hop always loved the parts of me that were outwardly tough, hyper-masculine, bitch-hoe calling, 'playalistic,' pussy gettin',' down-ass nigga. Yet, amidst the trap beats and bars, there lurks a shadow—an unspoken rule that dictates how men, especially Black men, should express themselves that extends beyond the genre, lest they be labeled as something they are not—no homo.
During my formative years of school, I remember vividly the early rigid enforcement of gender norms, where any deviation from the prescribed image of how boys were supposed to act was met with scorn and ridicule. I was raised in a conservative Midwest town, surrounded by liberalist ideas because of the Big 10 university within it.
I remember playing sports with the boys and jumping rope with the girls on the playground. Had I known boys were not allowed to jump rope unless they wanted to be seen and taunted as “gay” or a “faggot” I would have reconsidered my choice of activity. I did not understand then that two things could exist simultaneously and that I could be tough and soft.
From the bravado of street life to the swagger of success, the portrayal of the Black male image has long been a central theme in Black culture, sports, hip-hop music, and its accompanying lifestyle. Recently, Duke University basketball player Jared McCain received backlash for painting his nails. To many the move was unfathomable and not understood why this man, a young Black male, would paint his nails unless he was trying to tell the public something about his sexuality.
In the same way, rapper Lil Uzi Vert introduced his androgynous alter-ego, Leslie Chow, to the public last year. In the same way, Young Thug and Lil B wore dresses, and CeeLo Green and Andre 3000 were their predecessors. Beyond that, we are seeing Black men express themselves not only via fashion but also expose their true selves, i.e., their 'gayness' to one another, like Jerrod Carmichael expressing his love to his best friend, rapper Tyler, the Creator, in his HBO series, "Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show." One of the most vulnerable moments between two Black men in pop culture I have seen on
TV, which made a lot of viewers uncomfortable because we are still not used to seeing Black love expressed on TV, especially gay Black love.
Unlike our white counterparts, Black men have never been able to be themselves. Often, our ideas of masculinity are intertwined with our religious and Biblical indoctrination, which don't lend themselves to gender exploration and certainly not gayness or queerness, irrespective of our birthassigned gender, despite possessing both masculine and feminine traits. However, our gender difference is reinforced in everything we do – within our families, friendships, at work, public spaces, and educational institutions.
But why are Black men in hip-hop, perhaps more than in any other genre, burdened with the weight of societal expectations? The answer lies in the insecurities of a culture grappling with its own identity just as it always has—a culture that sees vulnerability as weakness and authenticity as a liability, even in the context of keeping it “one hundred.” In a world where toughness is equated with strength and emotion is dismissed as a sign of weakness, it's no wonder men are still forced to wear masks of stoicism, concealing our true selves behind a façade of machismo or what is now labeled as 'toxic masculinity.'
In recent years, there has been a growing movement within hip-hop to challenge these outdated notions of masculinity to embrace a more inclusive and expansive vision of manhood. Artists like Frank Ocean, Young M.A., Tyler, the Creator, and Lil Nas X have dared to defy convention, openly expressing and challenging traditional gender roles. Their courage has paved the way for a new generation of artists who refuse to be confined by the limitations of the past.
Yet, despite this progress, homophobia still looms large over hip-hop culture and Black culture, casting a long shadow of fear, prejudice, and straight-up ignorance. The mere suggestion that a man might deviate from the norm—whether through his fashion, his speech, or his sexuality—is enough to provoke outrage, hate, and violence. But what does it say about our culture when being true to oneself is seen as an act of defiance?
It's long overdue for hip-hop to embrace a more nuanced and inclusive understanding of being a man. Hip-hop and the Black people who create it are still a powerful force. We must challenge the hate that seeks to limit our expression and box us into categories as people and artists forge a new path forward guided by understanding, acceptance, and, dare I say, love. Self-expression is neither straight nor gay. Self-expression is art. It's a form of being. It's humanness.
The Neighbourhood Talk
KYLE SIMPSON BECOMES TALK OF THE TOWN WITH ENTERTAINMENT NEWS PLATFORM By Kent Olden
Life has a funny way of guiding us down the pathway to our purpose. Something like the yellow brick road — in The Wiz, not The Wizard of Oz — it starts off like an easy feat; just a little walk down this bright, shiny street. Then things happen. Menacing and miserable crows try to distract you from the path, strangers in the subway try to scare you from pressing on, and the ones rooting against you might send a motorcycle gang after you to try to completely take you out.
But along the way, you meet people that push you forward. Friends remind you that you’re smart enough to do it; that you’re brave enough to make it happen; that you know in your heart that this is what you need to do. Then you make it to the end and find the place you can call home. A home that your blood, sweat, and tears built. From all this, greatness is born.
" I BELIEVE IN KARMA, THOUGH, AND WE’RE JUST NOT HERE TO RUIN ANYBODY’S DAY. WE JUST LIKE TO GIVE THE TEA AND MAKE IT A LITTLE FUNNY. WE REALLY ARE NICE PEOPLE. "
In the world of celebrity and entertainment news, Kyle Simpson is a name that few people don’t know. Honing his craft while working for other well-known social media outlets, Kyle made the enterprising decision to create his own platform.
“I literally just told myself to go for it,” says Kyle, recalling his life-changing decision. “I told myself, ‘You love pop culture, you love reporting news, so why don’t you just go for it and do your own thing?’”
Two days after leaving his job, Kyle created The Neighborhood Talk. With his following from his previous position trailing him, Kyle saw The Neighborhood Talk slowly but surely flourish. “It’s grown into exactly what I wanted it to be,” he says. “We talk about pop culture, hard news. We go into funny tweets and TikTok videos. It’s pretty much everything you’d talk about in the neighborhood if you were outside talking to your friends when you get home from school. That’s what I wanted The Neighborhood Talk to encompass. It’s a place where you can come and get a little bit of everything.”
As with any new project, the growth didn’t come without obstacles along the way. Expectations were set, alterations were made, and lessons were learned to craft the platform exactly the way it needed to be successful. “I really wanted us to be at one million followers within the first year,” says Kyle. “Now we’re in year four, and we’re at 1.9 [million]. It’s all been a learning experience, especially as I learn how things change over the years, you know? Instagram isn’t what it was when I first started out in the blogging industry. It was so easy to get followers quickly back then. Now there are so many limitations: there are shadow bans, they took away the following tab that let you see what people were liking.”
This, he says, provided a huge understanding of how to operate as the social media scene constantly evolves, which he incorporates in The Neighborhood Talk’s growth to ensure the changing landscape of social media never hinders but
only helps the platform’s overall engagement. “One of the main things I’ve learned in growing this platform,” he says, “is giving the company a culture of collaboration. It’s all about ‘we’ and ‘us’ at The Neighborhood Talk, not ‘I’ and ‘me.’ I know what it’s like to be left out or feel underappreciated and I don’t want any member of my team to feel that here. I don’t pull off anything on my own here. The team brings it all to life.”
Setting The Neighborhood Talk apart from other platforms, Kyle continues his collaborative efforts with celebrities that TNT reports on. “One thing that makes us different is we actually try to work with the celebrities with the stories we post,” he says. “If we posted something about you, for example, and you just weren’t feeling it — if you DMed us and expressed yourself, we’ll take it down. If it’s some hot latebreaking news, though, I’m gonna have to keep it up! [laughs] I believe in karma, though, and we’re just not here to ruin anybody’s day. We just like to give the tea and make it a little funny. We really are nice people [laughs].”
While The Neighborhood Talk has built a brand around sharing the latest news and hot gossip [insert witty Lady Whistledown Bridgerton reference here], it’s also committed to shedding light on important issues. “We cover a lot of murders and domestic violence stories, and the neighbors weren’t really feeling it, but it’s important to shed light on everything going on,” he says. “Especially given all the crimes against transgendered people. We don’t want to force anything down anyone’s throats, but ignoring the problem doesn’t make it go away.”
As long as The Neighborhood Talk is around, stories will be told and fun will be had. From hosting women’s empowerment events like EmpowerHER NYC to possible podcasts in the future, The Neighborhood Talk will continue to make sure it’s the talk of the town.
Keep up with The Neighborhood Talk on social media @theneighborhoodtalk!

The Harlem Renaissance Revived at the MET Museum
THE HARLEM RENAISSANCE, known as the New Negro Movement, was a lively artistic movement that took place in Harlem in the late 1920s, starting at the end of World War I. Harlem was and still is viewed internationally as the “Black Mecca” and became a place where African Americans were drawn to live due to economic and job related opportunities, education, shelter, political beliefs, history, arts, food, music, and the overall culture. Harlem was originally a Dutch village, populated with Jewish and Italian Americans in the 19th century until the Great Migration prompted African Americans to arrive in Harlem vastly. The Great Migration was an important movement because for nearly 60 years, six million African Americans were moving up north for higher wages, escaping violence in the South, withdrew from agricultural work, and was ready to move to urban cities such as New York City, Baltimore, Boston, and Philadelphia.
Harlem, a neighborhood in Upper Manhattan showcased the everyday life
By Dr. Dominique M. Carson
of African Americans especially in Central and West Harlem due to the progression of the Harlem Renaissance. It became the stage for blacks to flourish in art, music, literature, theater, politics, scholarship, and fashion. This period helped shape the 20th century and embodied creativity from African Americans, ranging from artists, writers, musicians, and prominent individuals coming together to celebrate the culture. Through the arts, African Americans used their talents as a guide for others to be informed of the issues associated with racial injustice and fight for racial equality, leading to the advancement of civil rights. They were also able to resurge the culture, assert their place in society, and welcome the richness of African American heritage.
This pivotal historical moment, the Harlem Renaissance will be brought to life in a captivating exhibition at the prestigious Metropolitan Museum of Art in Manhattan. The MET launched the Harlem Renaissance and Transatlantic Modernism Exhibition from February 28 to July 28, 2024.
The museum will have 160 works- ranging from sculptures, paintings, film, and photography to highlight their experiences in the early 20th century. Each piece of work will represent modern life for African Americans in Southside Chicago and New York City from the 1920’s to 1940’s. The timeline is crucial because it was the start when more blacks were migrating to the North and no longer wanted to be in segregated rural areas of the South.
The MET stated that a “significant percentage of the artwork were from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), such as Clark Atlanta, Fisk, Hampton University
Art Museum, and Howard University Gallery of Art.” Other pieces of work were gifted from the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C., the Smithsonian American Art Museum, private collections, and European museums.
The Harlem Renaissance and Transatlantic Modernism is organized by The Met’s Denise Murrell, PhD, Merryl H., and James S. Tisch, Curator at Large, Office of the Director, in consultation with an advisory committee of leading scholars. The Ford Foundation, the Barrie A. and Deedee Wigmore Foundation, and Denise Littlefield Sobel sponsored the event with corporate sponsorship from Bank of America.
“This landmark exhibition reframes the Harlem Renaissance, cementing its place as the first African American-led movement of international modern art,” said Max Holdin, The MET’s Marina Kellen French Director and CEO. “Through compelling portraits, vibrant city scenes, and dynamic portrayals of nightlife created by leading artists of the time, the exhibition boldly underscores the movement’s pivotal role in shaping the portrayal of the modern Black subject- and indeed the very fabric of early 20th century modern art.”
MET’s Merryl H and James S. Tisch Curator at Large, Denise Murrell, also shared her excitement for the Harlem Renaissance exhibition at the MET when she said, “We are very pleased to present this wide-ranging exhibition that establishes the New Negro cohort of African Americans artists and their alliesnow known as the Harlem Renaissance- at the vanguard of the portrayal of modern Black life and culture in Harlem and other new Black cities nationwide at a time of rapid expansion in the first decades of the Great Migration.”
The exhibition’s purpose is to demonstrate the role of the Harlem Renaissance in America, identify how blacks were portrayed during this era, recognize the development of transatlantic modern art, and celebrate the talented artists behind this groundbreaking movement.
Nearly 55 years earlier, the MET presented an exhibition for the Harlem Renaissance, titled “Harlem on My Mind,” featuring newspaper clippings and photographs. However, it did not have works from Black artists and painters. Therefore, the museum
decided to give it another shot. Murrell needed to present the legacy of the Harlem Renaissance in a more dignified way, this time with paintings and sculptures. MET will start with works by photographer James Van Der Zee, initially in the exhibition in the late 60s since he was an illustrious photographer from that era.
Over a century later, The Harlem Renaissance was an imperative time in history because it impacted American literature, music, and art. It also bypassed racial stereotypes of being an African American and encouraged others to embrace their roots proudly. The MET museum understands that this era leaves a legacy because it inspires the next generation of creatives to be successful and honors artistic achievement and cultural empowerment.
This is an event not to be missed. It offers a unique opportunity to immerse oneself in the rich cultural heritage and artistic achievements of this transformative era. At the museum, you will see how this era was a part of African Americans’ identities.

MCs are a crucial piece of ballroom culture, implementing different inspirations from all performers to provide the runway with personality and honest critique.
Growing up in Queens, New York, Jack was exposed to the early stages of ballroom tradition. Enticed by expression, Jack saw the opportunity to participate while adding his originality to the role of host in the ballroom. Jack started voicing his skills on the microphone for House Mizrahi and The House of Chanel, shifting the influence of ballroom voguing to reach a broader demographic.
Taking inspiration from late 90s hip-hop, wordplay is one of many ways Jack has made such a name for himself. Rhythm not only exists on the runway but also on the mic, entrance names, descriptions, and transitions all have to flow in unison. Being a fan of professional wrestling, Jack would stylize the names of dancers just as if it were a wrestling match. These titles are so iconic they stick to contestants instantly, a huge example of this would be Leiomy Maldonado, playing in shows such as Legendary, and Pose.
Jack would give Leiomy their iconic stage name “The Wonder Woman of Vogue”. Pair these rhythmic hooks with the confidence and assertive stage voice similar to a preacher, and you witness true passion fueled by a love for the culture and as a creator, a desire to produce creative work in every moment on the microphone. These skills are all that make Jack’s hosting abilities stand within the ranks of ballroom legacy.
In recent years, Jack has continued to gather fans around the world through his hosting alone. Traveling globally to exert emotion and bring his undoubted feeling of royalty, Jack has strengthened the platform for the LGBTQ+ community, vogue dancers, and even allies to interact on a far deeper level. Participating in Coach’s 2021 Pride Campaign was another opportunity where Jack was able to naturally voice his creativity through fashion.
He explained the collaboration, saying that Coach has been open to supporting not only himself but the ballroom in many regards. Brands, like Coach, have been proactive in opening a space for Queer individuality in their products, Jack has shown to be a part of this successful breakthrough. Uplifting the voice and outreach of ballroom culture through his
authenticity on the microphone but being a person of color adds to Jack’s praise, showing an important piece of New York history and African-American triumph.
The ability to express themes of fulfillment and flawlessness is crucial to ballroom culture. Whether you wish to be able to create personas or be yourself, for Jack, it allowed him to step into his comfort zone and show how artistic the tradition can be, remaining a notable figure to multiple communities.
