On a warm summer’s evenin’ on a train bound for nowhere I met up with a gambler; we were both too tired to sleep So we took turns a-starin’ out the window at the darkness ‘Til boredom overtook us and he began to speak
He said, “Son, I’ve made a life out of readin’ people’s faces And knowin’ what their cards were by the way they held their eyes So if you don’t mind my sayin’, I can see you’re out of aces For a taste of your whiskey, I’ll give you some advice”
So I handed him my bottle, and he drank down my last swallow Then he bummed a cigarette and asked me for a light And the night got deathly quiet, and his face lost all expression Said, “If you’re gonna play the game, boy, you gotta learn to play it right”
You got to know when to hold ‘em, know when to fold ‘em Know when to walk away and know when to run You never count your money when you’re sittin’ at the table There’ll be time enough for countin’ when the dealing’s done
THE GAMBLER KENNY ROGERS
As the world spins faster than ever before, I find myself reflecting on one of the greatest lessons life offers: knowing when to hold ‘em and knowing when to fold ‘em. And no, don’t take poker advice from me. But, the metaphor resonates deeply with the journey we’re all on, in both business and in life.
Here at Bleu, we’ve experienced our own share of highs and lows, moments when the cards we were dealt seemed unbeatable, and other times when the odds stacked up against us. But like the gambler, we’ve learned to trust the rhythm of the game. There are seasons to push forward, to take calculated risks, and to stake our claim. And there are times to recognize that a particular hand—regardless of who dealt it—just isn’t worth chasing.
In a world where everything is constantly shifting, from technology to culture, it’s critical to remain grounded in what truly matters. Our feature stories explore some of the boldest innovators, the game-changers, and those who, despite overwhelming odds, have made remarkable moves. But we also take time to reflect on those who’ve walked away gracefully, knowing when to step back and pivot.
Bleu is about celebrating the journey—win or lose. So as you read through this issue, I encourage you to think about your own game. What’s your next move? Is it time to take a risk, or should you fold and wait for a better opportunity? And most importantly, don’t forget: You’ve got to know when to walk away.

FERRARI’S
MASTER-CLASS SUV
WITH THE RECENT INFLUX IN FOUR-DOOR SPORTS CARS, FERRARI CLAIMS A SPOT IN THE CONVERSATION WITH THEIR NEW VEHICLE, THE FERRARI PUROSANGUE.
By Hassan Wiggins
AS 2024 COMES to an end, we reflect on the vehicles introduced this year with both excitement and content and, in some cases, disappointment. Many brands revealed their newest creations in hopes of seizing the sports car market but also appealing to newer audiences. Their goal to broaden the appeal of super vehicles to the mainstream was seen as early as 2018 with Maserati’s Levante Trofeo. A respectable introduction and an early contender in what would be recognized as the sports SUV. With many brands capitalizing on this demand for larger, more spacious, and durable vehicles, we see iconic names cemented in the trends lineage, such as the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk, 2023 Lamborghini Urus, or Bentley’s Bentayga Speed. Enter 2024, however, and we saw one of the most performative, memorable, and promising SUVs of the year from Ferrari. Without a doubt, Ferrari chose to place the Purosangue before long-term buyers and new customers hoping to join in on the SUV trend.
The Ferrari Purosangue promises those interested a luxury experience that challenges even some of the longer models reigning over the SUV genre. This SUV is not afraid to boast with its sleek design. Almost resembling a coupe, the Purosangue checks in at about 4,482 lbs, making it a superior lightweight vehicle and one of the lightest among its competition. The luxurious but efficient design is to be credited for this, with many curves that allow the vehicle to remain aerodynamic while reaching top speeds with its aggressive engine. Powered by a V-12 engine, the SUV can reach a top speed exceeding 193 mph. Compare that to a vehicle like the Urus or Bentayga, which only hits top speeds of 190 mph or less. Surprisingly, the Purosangue is Ferrari’s first four-door, four-seated sports vehicle in its history, even more the reason to recognize its greatness. Time is not a factor for Ferrari when it comes to producing a vehicle to hold its own against tough competitors in the market.
A 2024 release meant less time for Ferrari to advertise and pitch the Purosangue to possible SUV buyers, a significant drawback to joining the SUV trend later than other sports car manufacturers. Despite the setback, Ferrari produced notable numbers and, more importantly, employed a strategy to make up for their late arrival. Ferrari shipped 7,044 units in the first half of 2024, and the Purosangue played a significant role in these numbers. The genius marketing strategy, however, lies in the car’s production numbers. Due to the SUV's release having such a high demand, Ferrari chose to produce less to maintain exclusivity and increase the value of the Purosangue. This allowed the car to command even higher prices due to its rarity, making its average price tag higher than the suggested manufacturer's price.
While Ferrari has released other notable sports cars in recent years, the 2024 Ferrari Purosangue proved to be its most eyecatching and hospitable sports car. It is a good choice for both long-term fans and SUV enthusiasts who want a respectable blend of sports car power and SUV durability and efficiency. A combination of luxury and durability is considered a meaningful choice when purchasing a sports SUV. Luckily, the Ferrari Purosangue offers exactly what you're searching for.

REDEFINING CONTEMPORARY ART THROUGH BOLD LINES and ICONIC IMAGERY
WITH HIS UNIQUE VISUAL LANGUAGE AND VIBRANT APPROACH, DAVID FLORES HAS EMERGED AS A CELEBRATED FORCE IN THE WORLDS OF STREET ART, FASHION, AND FINE ART.
By Justin Wallace
David Flores is a name that resonates across diverse realms of contemporary art, from street murals and gallery exhibitions to collaborations with global brands. Known for his unmistakable stained glass-inspired style, Flores has built a career that transcends traditional artistic boundaries. He blends bold graphic lines, vibrant color palettes, and an uncanny ability to transform iconic imagery into something entirely his own.
Born and raised in Southern California, Flores was immersed in the cultural melange of skateboarding, graffiti, and design from an early age. This eclectic upbringing provided the foundation for his distinct artistic voice. Influenced by comic books, stained glass windows, and the fluidity of graffiti, Flores developed a style he calls “stained glass” or “broken-face technique.” This approach uses thick black outlines and geometric shapes to break an image into fragmented yet cohesive pieces, much like a mosaic. This signature style has become his hallmark, instantly recognizable and widely admired.
Flores first gained prominence in the skateboarding world, where
his designs graced skateboard decks, apparel, and advertisements. His early collaborations with major skate brands like Shorty’s and DC Shoes showcased his ability to seamlessly merge art and culture. However, it wasn’t long before his work caught the attention of larger audiences. His transition from skateboarding to the fine art world was marked by bold murals and gallery shows that demonstrated his versatility and artistic depth.
A defining aspect of Flores’s career has been his ability to bridge the gap between street art and high art. While his work often begins on urban walls, it frequently finds its way into galleries, museums, and even corporate offices. This duality has allowed him to remain grounded in his roots while expanding his influence on a global scale. Flores has painted large-scale murals in cities like Los Angeles, Tokyo, and Barcelona, each a testament to his skill and vision. His murals often celebrate cultural icons, from musicians like Tupac Shakur and David Bowie to historical figures like Abraham Lincoln and Albert Einstein. Each piece is a tribute reimagined through the prism of his distinct artistic lens.
Collaboration has been another cornerstone of Flores’s career. Over the
years, he has partnered with some of the world’s most recognizable brands, including Disney, Nike, and Levi’s. These collaborations have brought his art to new audiences, proving that his style is both versatile and universally appealing. One of his most notable partnerships was with Disney, where he reinterpreted beloved characters like Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck. These pieces not only honored the original creations but also showcased Flores’s ability to infuse them with fresh, contemporary energy.
Despite his commercial success, Flores remains deeply committed to his artistic integrity and social responsibility. Many of his murals carry messages of hope, resilience, and community. For example, his 2017 mural “Hope for the Hopeless,” created in collaboration with the Downtown Women’s Center in Los Angeles, brought attention to the issue of homelessness while celebrating the strength of those who endure it. His work often speaks to universal themes, connecting with audiences on a personal and emotional level.
Flores’s impact extends beyond his artwork. He has also mentored emerging artists, offering guidance and opportunities to those looking to make their mark in the art world. His belief in the power of collaboration
and community has inspired a new generation of creators who see art not just as an individual pursuit but as a collective endeavor.
In recent years, Flores has continued to evolve, exploring new mediums and themes. While his signature “broken-face technique” remains central to his work, he has expanded into sculpture, printmaking, and digital art. This willingness to innovate has ensured that his art remains relevant and exciting, even as the world of contemporary art undergoes rapid changes.
Looking ahead, Flores shows no signs of slowing down. With upcoming exhibitions, international mural projects, and new brand collaborations in the pipeline, he remains a dynamic force in the art world. Yet, despite his busy schedule, Flores’s commitment to authenticity and his passion for storytelling remain unchanged.
David Flores is more than an artist; he is a cultural icon in his own right. What sets him apart is his ability to fuse the past with the present, transform the familiar into the extraordinary, and inspire others along the way. In a world where art is often fleeting, Flores’s work endures— bold, vibrant, and undeniably original.
SMALL OR LARGE SHIPS
WHICH CRUISE TO CHOOSE
By Jennifer Billock
I’ve always been a small-ship cruising type of girl. The all-inclusive experience is something I cling to tightly because I don’t like hidden fees and other expenses. But, recently, I took my first multi-thousandperson cruise on Holland America Line’s Oosterdam, and I have to say—I loved it. If you’re trying to decide between a small or large ship cruise, here’s what you need to know.
PASSENGERS
First things first: How many passengers are on each type of ship? Small ships tend to have about 250 passengers. Mid-size ships can get up to 2,000, and large ships can be anything over 2,000 people. Those numbers fluctuate based on who you ask, so consider this a general guideline. On most all-inclusive small ships, like Viking, for example, passengers are required to be 18 or older. Larger ships allow passengers of all ages, and cruises don’t shy away from it, either. On my Holland America cruise, I toddled across the path of multiple infants and their families.
ONBOARD ACTIVITIES
I adore the onboard activities on small ship cruises because they tend to be historical lectures that I’m particularly interested in because of the itinerary destinations. But on a large ship? It’s like being at a floating vacation resort. Every day was packed with activities, from art and gym classes to shopping events and games. The Oosterdam has a photo studio and an arcade as well. My favorite on-ship event was the bar crawl to four different bars onboard.
STATEROOMS
On small ships, the staterooms usually all face outside and often have balconies or windows that come halfway down. But on larger ships, you could end up with a room in the interior of the ship, with no windows, or even one that looks down over other parts of the boat, like the pools or the shopping area. Some of the rooms that face outside won’t have balconies, either—you may get a small window or porthole.
EXCURSIONS
I love a good excursion off a small ship. The groups are small, sometimes only a handful of people, and the host or guide can answer everyone’s questions. On larger ships, the excursions are still excellent—it’s just with a lot more people. One of my excursions on Oosterdam probably had about 60 people on it, which is great if you stay near the front to ask any questions. Something that surprised me, though, was that one of my excursions from Oosterdam was canceled because my guest and I were the only two people who signed up. On a ship with 2,000 people, I didn’t expect that to happen!
FOOD
If you’re like me, a day on your cruise probably revolves around food. What am I doing that day, and when can I fit in a meal? And is the food actually good? I have to say, the food on Oosterdam was among the best cruise ship food I’ve ever had—and I’ve cruised a lot. Small ships tend to have shorter hours and less selection; on large ships, you can usually find food around the clock that caters to every type of diet.
EXTRA COSTS
The costs incurred on a large ship were always a sticking point for me, so I gravitated toward the all-inclusive small ships. However, those all-inclusive cruises are expensive—like $15,000 expensive. Larger ships don’t cost as much for fare, about $5,000 to $8,000, depending on the cruise destination and the ship itself. But, you then have expenses onboard. On larger ships, one or two restaurants are usually included, but anything other than those spots costs extra, such as drinks, excursions, and on-ship events. Entertainment is always included, though. One thing that really surprised me on the Oosterdam was that if you bought a bottle of wine or other alcohol off the ship, it was confiscated when you got back on the ship and held until the end of the cruise—and you’d have to pay $20 plus an 18% gratuity charge for them to hold it. Ultimately, those smaller charges add up, so you may pay an extra $500 or more when you settle the bill. Is it still cheaper than an allinclusive? Well, that depends on how much you spend on the ship.
Ultimately, what type of cruise depends on your preference. Do you want something more expensive and adult-only without a lot of extra costs and fewer daily activities? Or do you want something cheaper for all ages but with more charges and the feel of a floating vacation resort? I, for one, recommend trying both. They each have their own charms.
MONTEREY, CARMEL, & BIG SUR
THE PERFECT COASTAL GETAWAY WITH SCENIC VIEWS, LUXE STAYS, AND LOCAL CUISINE
DISCOVER THE BEST PLACES TO STAY, DINE, AND EXPLORE ALONG CALIFORNIA’S STUNNING CENTRAL COAST, INCLUDING INSIDER TIPS FOR A SERENE, ADVENTUREFILLED ESCAPE.
By Becca Blond
If you dream of a peaceful yet adventure-filled getaway, Monterey, Carmel-by-the-Sea, and Big Sur have everything you need. This iconic stretch of California coastline offers activities for everyone, from oceanfront relaxation and whale watching to farm-to-table dining, scenic drives, and hiking. Whether you’re visiting for a weekend or an extended stay, this region is all about unforgettable views, great food, and warm hospitality.
WHERE TO STAY MONTEREY BEACH HOTEL
Fresh off a stylish rebranding and renovation, the Monterey Beach Hotel stands out as the only beachfront resort in Monterey. As a Marriott-affiliated property, it offers Bonvoy members the chance to earn and redeem points, adding extra value for loyal travelers. Oceanview rooms are worth the splurge—imagine falling asleep to the sound of waves crashing less than 100 feet from your window. The hotel’s chic lobby features large glass windows that provide unobstructed views of the Pacific Ocean, making it a perfect spot for whale watching. During my stay, humpback and gray whales frequently breached close to the shore. Outside, cozy seating areas with fire pits facing the sea create unforgettable evenings, especially during Monterey’s golden sunsets.
The amenities here elevate the experience further. Guests enjoy a daily $25 wine credit to sample from the self-serve wine wall featuring local varietals, while the heated pool, barrel saunas, and cold plunges offer relaxation with a touch of luxury. E-bike rentals are complimentary, making it easy to explore the surrounding area. The on-site restaurant, The Lantern Room, serves California-inspired dishes that showcase the region’s fresh ingredients, making it a culinary highlight of any stay. The property is also in the process of putting in outdoor barrel saunas and cold plunges that will take their wellness offerings up a notch.
WHERE TO EAT BEST RESTAURANTS IN MONTEREY AND CARMEL
The central coast is known for its fresh, locally sourced cuisine, and there’s no shortage of exceptional dining experiences here. In Monterey, Cella offers a polished yet approachable menu focused on local seafood and meats. Signature dishes like seared scallops and grilled lamb chops are beautifully prepared and thoughtfully presented. Maligne, another Monterey gem, shines with its farm-to-table philosophy. NINETEEN YEARS AFTER HURRICANE KATRINA DEVASTATED HIS HOMETOWN, MIAMI DOLPHINS PLAYER DUKE DENNIS REFLECTS ON HOW THE TRAGEDY SHAPED HIS IDENTITY AS AN ATHLETE, MUSICIAN, AND BUSINESSMAN. By Pretty Honore
photographer MAX BERONE stylist SPICER PR
" It taught me so much about life, just having to transition "
FOR CITIZENS OF Louisiana, Katrina wasn’t just a hurricane—it was a force that ripped families from their roots and shattered communities. NFL player Duke Riley was only a child when the eye of the storm hit his hometown of Buras, La.
The small town was flooded with more than 20 feet of water, leaving his home destroyed and his family displaced. When the rain stopped, Duke’s long and challenging road to success began. Nineteen years later, he regards the tragedy as one of the most “critical moments” of his life.
“It taught me so much about life, just having to transition,” Duke told Bleu Magazine.
Duke continued: “I was able to get away from where I was—where I grew up—and be around different people and go to different schools and be around different mindsets and see different things and have more resources. It wasn't a lot of resources where I was from.”
Now a pro athlete, musician, and businessman, Duke says his challenges were the catalyst to his success. “Having to pick up and go, having to pick up and go [to] this hotel, this city, this hotel, my mama's family, this place with my daddy's family—it actually helped my career.”
“With the circumstances that I was given through all my life and the challenges that I had to go through, a lot of people didn't think I would be here,” the Miami Dolphins player said, adding, “But I always knew I would be.”
No matter how far Duke is from home, his love for Louisiana remains unwavering, and he puts on for his city every chance he gets. “Everything is influenced by where I'm from—my tattoos, the way I look, I dress, how I talk, how I walk, it's all of that,” the ball player told Bleu. “Louisiana got the most influence in music, fashion, style, swag—even sports.”
Although the football star has achieved massive success throughout his career, Duke said he will always remember where he came from. In fact, his love for Louisiana runs so deep that he said he’ll “never leave.”

“I love everything about [Louisiana] because I've been all over the world, and there's no better people. You know, this is just my opinion,” he said with pride. “I love that real, organic, genuine southern hospitality that the people where I'm from have, you know. You don't get that everywhere.”
After nearly a decade of dedication to football, Duke is determined to define his identity outside of the NFL, including building his resume in fashion and music. “I don't even think there are enough hours in a day for me,” the multifaceted creative enthused.

" Everything is influenced by where I'm from—my tattoos, the way I look, I dress, how I talk, how I walk, it's all of that "
Now that Duke has secured his spot in the league, he’s channeled his creative energy into his music and his own clothing brand, Down the Road Apparel (DTR).
Influenced by OG NOLA rappers like Lil Wayne and Juvenile, he dropped his debut album, We All Have Bad Habits, in 2024, featuring tracks like “Learning Lessons Still” and “Tom Brady.”
But Duke isn’t new to the rap game—he’s true to it. “I’ve been making music since high school; I just had to give it a break because I had to focus on football and get to a point
where my football took care of my music career, to where I didn't have to get taken advantage of [by record executives].”
“I had to wait until seven years to drop my first song because I didn't want [the NFL] to say that anything that I do is a distraction,” he added. Given his keen eye for fashion, Duke’s dream of becoming a designer comes as no surprise.
“I've always wanted to be in the fashion [world]. People always told me to get into it. [But] I felt like, at the end of the day, there's a time and a place [for that],” he shared. And for Duke, that time and place is now.
Both literally and figuratively, Duke has put the city on his back. Heavy is the head that wears the crown, and this hometown hero doesn’t take that responsibility lightly.
“Right now, I can't make a mistake— I know that I gotta show up every single day at a different level than anybody else.”
Duke’s career is a testament to the Bayou state’s resilience. He turned storms into stepping stones on his path to success. As the NOLA native steps into the next chapter of his career, he does so with love in his heart and Louisiana on his mind.

Double Take Double Take TEKNO
TEKNO RETURNS WITH A DOUBLE SINGLE RELEASE, “GON GON” AND “NO FORGET,” SHOWCASING HIS VERSATILITY AND DEPTH AS AN AFROPOP STAR. IN PARTNERSHIP WITH EMPAWA AFRICA, THESE TRACKS EXPLORE THEMES OF LOVE AND CONNECTION, REAFFIRMING HIS DYNAMIC PRESENCE IN THE GENRE.
By Deonte Chalant
AAs summer draws to a close, Afropop has undeniably dominated the soundtracks of clubs, lounges, brunches, and house parties. The infectious blend of Amapiano rhythms and Afrobeat’s fusion with R&B has kept dance floors buzzing and fans captivated. Right on cue, Afrobeat sensation Tekno has made his mark on the season by releasing his latest tracks, “Gon Gon” and “No Forget.” These new offerings capture the vibrant essence of summer and showcase Tekno’s knack for innovation and delivering unforgettable melodies. Released simultaneously as a double-sided single on digital platforms via Cartel Music and emPawa Africa, the tracks offer a modern take on the classic A and B side format—a nod to the nostalgia of vinyl single releases that I, as a collector, genuinely appreciate. The songs offer contrasting but complementary vibes that showcase Tekno’s range and creativity.
“‘Gon Gon’ is all about fun and love, capturing the carefree spirit of summer and the joy of asking someone special to be officially yours,”
GON GON
AN AMAPIANO-INFUSED SUMMER ANTHEM
The first track in Tekno’s double release, “Gon Gon,” is a bouncy anthem that embodies the feel-good energy of summer. Collaborating with producer Egar Boi, Tekno dives headfirst into the Amapiano wave that has been dominating dance floors worldwide. The track is anchored by the genre’s signature log drum pattern, delivering a captivating beat that’s impossible not to move to. Lyrically, Tekno keeps it playful yet determined as he sets out to clarify his romantic intentions, asking a special someone to take their relationship to the next level. “‘Gon Gon’ is all about fun and love, capturing the carefree spirit of summer and the joy of asking someone special to be officially yours,” Tekno shares.
NO FORGET
A SMOOTH R&B SIDE
“No Forget” adopts a softer, more reflective tone than its predecessor. Collaborating with producer Louddaaa, known for his work with artists like Ayra Starr, Amaarae, and Lojay, Tekno delivers a track that blends R&B sensibilities with a smooth production style while still retaining a dancefloor
appeal. While the lyrics of “Gon Gon” revolve around the excitement of courtship and the thrill of the chase, “No Forget” signifies a maturation in the relationship, highlighting a mutual commitment to uplift and support one another. Tekno explores a profound emotional connection, crafting a heartfelt R&Bleaning anthem that speaks to the essence of undying love. He describes the track as a window into his vulnerability: “These songs showcase a more vulnerable side of me, and I poured my heart into them.” With its rich melodies and evocative lyrics, “No Forget” invites listeners to experience the depth of his feelings, making it a standout piece in this double single release.
This release marks another chapter in Tekno’s fruitful partnership with emPawa Africa, an independent label renowned for its forward-thinking approach to artist development. The collaboration, spearheaded by Mr. Eazi, has already seen significant success, including the hit single “Wayo,” which has garnered over 15 million streams online. With emPawa’s support, it’s likely that “Gon Gon” and “No Forget” will achieve similar digital success and impact. Altogether, these tracks reinforce Tekno’s status as one of Afropop’s most versatile stars.

HOW HIS RELENTLESS SPIRIT IS MAKING MILLIONAIRES By Kent Olden
“My mission is God-led, you know? God told me my purpose, and I know I’m doing God’s work. I am honored to be there for these people and pour into them, and as I teach them, they teach others. Each one teach one.”
HOLLYWOOD HAS A funny way of having you prove yourself: one day you’re a star and the next, you’re not enough. Making a transition from music to movies has proven iconic for some while taking a leap from the silver screen to the recording studio doesn’t pan out for others. When it comes to leaving a legacy in “La La Land,” only the strong survive; that same strength is what constantly pushes stars through. Finding your niche is sensational but being able to help others do the same is, well, Spectacular…
Finding fame as one-fourth of the award-winning R&B group Pretty Ricky, Spectacular Smith has always had a knack for knowing what he wants and making it happen. Never losing sight of the vision he outlined for his life, he continues to successfully navigate his way to higher heights, and he’s now sharing his secrets to success with those willing to dream big enough. From performing onstage for thousands of screaming fans to shaping the success of visionaries and aspiring entrepreneurs, Spectacular is living up to the legacy of his name.
Recalling the hills and valleys of his stardom with Pretty Ricky, Smith found a silver lining in what could’ve been a dark cloud in his career.
“When I went through my valley in life, you know, when my group kinda fell off the bandwagon, I had to find something else out,” he says. “Social media has always been a thing for me, and I realized I could make [it] off Twitter, so I started there.”
Learning more about the ins and outs of social media algorithms, Spectacular began creating a handful of different accounts that were successfully being monetized by the platform.
“It was the blue ocean strategy. I mastered it and brought it to the music industry, signing up rappers like Soulja Boy—he was my first rapper —and I got Bow Wow, Sean Kingston, and Master P. Anybody you could think of I had on my platform, helping them grow their following and monetize their platforms,” he adds.
And so, his social media management and tech enterprise, AdWizar, was born. Taking what he learned to help industry heavy hitters like
these, Smith developed a way to extend his reach to people who dare to not only chase their dreams but also catch them. Through Spectacular Academy —a virtual educational entrepreneurship curriculum —Smith provides coursework on different aspects of business-building, including branding, operations, marketing, and wealth management. Not only is Spectacular Academy a thriving online program for participants, but it’s also been named a 2024 Inc. Best Workplaces honoree, applauded for its capacity for creating a culture of diversity, inclusivity, and sustainability.
“The reason why the curriculum works so well is because we’re always on the cutting edge,” says Smith. “We just had an event where thousands of people were given access to life-changing opportunities that they otherwise would have never known about. We created this innovative strategy that helped people start their businesses, but it’s a full movement focused in spirituality so that the person is still fed while they watch their business grow.”
Always finding ways to flip obstacles into opportunities, Spectacular has challenged himself to have a hand in making one million millionaires through Spectacular Academy, and it’s already started making some!
“It feels good to be able to do this for people,” says Smith. “My mission is God-led, you know? God told me my purpose, and I know I’m doing God’s work. I am honored to be there for these people and pour into them, and as I teach them, they teach others. Each one teach one.”
With all the life-changing opportunities Spectacular’s drive is developing, he’s far from over. Bleu got the inside scoop on some upcoming projects he has down the pike, but you’ll have to stay tuned to see what they are. Just know things are going global, and Spectacular is living up to his name!

UNDERSTANDS THAT GRATITUDE IS NECESSARY ON AND OFF THE COURT By Dr. Dominique Carson
NIGERIAN BASKETBALL STAR Josh Okogie describes his journey in the sport as remarkable. Okogie discovered his capabilities playing for the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets and was recognized as a top athlete at the institution. Okogie’s persistent approach to the game had him drafted at No. 20 in the 2018 NBA Draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves and now proudly plays for the Phoenix Suns. Each time he is on the court, he pays homage to his Nigerian roots and wants his journey to encourage others to reach their goals through hard work, determination, perseverance, and endurance. In 2022, Okogie launched Nonstop Community Day in Snellville, Georgia, where kids and parents could play games, participate in sports, enjoy recreational activities, and try various foods at the event. This year, Okogie had representatives from Google attend the event, while Best Buy representatives gave kids lessons about electricity and drones. They were also informed about Artificial Intelligence and other digital effects so the youth can be ahead of the curve.
Bleu Magazine spoke with the athlete about his love for the game, fashion, embracing Georgia culture, and what’s to come in 2024.
Bleu: How did you fall in love with basketball?
Okogie: When I was younger, my older brother wanted to get into sports, so he bought a basketball. And just so he can, you know, practice and try to see if he likes it, but he never got the chance to use the basketball. But when I started, I grew up loving the sport.
Bleu: After years of practice, what was your instant reaction when you were selected in the 2018 NBA Draft?
Okogie: Growing up, I always dreamed of joining the NBA, but if it didn’t happen, I would figure it out and still be successful. It was still surreal; so many emotions crept up when I heard the news. Luckily enough, I was consoled by my family and friends. It was an incredible moment to share an experience with them.
Bleu: What were some of the highs in your career so far?
Okogie: I could attend college in Atlanta and play basketball with my family and friends. There are many, but playing in front of them is always great.
“ It’s easy because I am a family man and love being around my family.”
Bleu: I know you love fashion. Did you develop your keen sense of fashion from your family or the ATL culture?
Okogie: Georgia did influence my style, especially going to Georgia Tech and wearing sweatshirts everywhere. Regarding fashion, it is something I’ve been taking on recently. I can put different pieces together; I view it as a puzzle and try to make a complete picture.
Bleu: What was the Milan Fashion Week experience like?
Okogie: Yes, I was a part of the event. It’s funny. I was reluctant to do it because I’d never done it before. But it was the space I wanted to enter and see what it was all about for myself. In Milan, I was ready to submerge myself into that environment, and it was cool to see different brands and how they’re becoming innovative, and you know what direction they’re heading in the next couple of years and be able to meet the creators of the brands. When you start to understand brands and how they got started, you know how they were launched or what to look out for when you go to a Giorgio Armani store, so that was cool regarding the information aspect of fashion.
Bleu: How did you interact with the Italian natives while visiting Milan for Fashion Week?
Okogie: I made a lot of friends when I was out there. Like I said, I was out there a couple of weeks ago, like a week before fashion week. I was able to connect with some people. And I saw the people during fashion week. So, it was cool to hang out with somebody like myself in the culture. I was eating spaghetti every day. I was introduced to Aperol Spritz and checked that daily, too. So it’s my new drink now. I got that from Italy. So it was so fun to see that country, particularly that city.
Bleu: How do you keep your Nigerian roots alive as your fame continues multiplying?
Okogie: It’s easy because I am a family man and love being around my family. They’re always around, and it just makes more of who I am, and they remind me where I come from and who I am as a person. Being around people who are part of my life is always good, so it keeps me grounded and rooted.
Bleu: How did you begin working on Nonstop Community Day?
Okogie: Last year, I tried creating a fun day on my birthday, which is September 1. So, last year, I tried to do something where all my friends and family could unite, and we could have fun, whether in a water balloon fight, playing around with water guns, playing football, having a D.J., or having food and refreshments. We do so much in life; there aren’t enough free fun days, and anytime you want to have fun, there’s a cost. So, I provided a way to meet my family, and we had some free fun. This year, I decided to open it up to the community. I just wanted to create a day that kids can have fun and never forget, even if it’s just once a year, and I would love to bring that back to the community. It’s a way of giving back; now, I could have basketball, but some kids do not play basketball. I wanted to do something for the whole community. No matter their interests, they can participate in this special day.
Bleu: What was the feedback you’ve received from the kids at Nonstop Community Day?
Okogie: I could have invited a lot more kids than I did. There were a lot of people there. But you know, I just did it bigger. So, next year, I aim to have more kids and outreach. But just in terms of the results and the feedback from this year, it was tremendous. Every kid loved it. You know, the families know, the parents. And it’s funny because a lot of the parents there were peers I met when I was in high school, or you know, they just had younger kids when they brought their kids we haven’t seen in years to the event. It was great. The parents said I need to do this every year, and I feel like I put a smile on a kid and parent’s face.
Bleu: What are your upcoming projects for 2024?
Okogie: I plan on playing until June because of the championship. I also plan to do Paris Fashion Week, still on Community Day, travel more, and see what else is out there. At this point in my life, I am curious and want to travel the world to places I’ve never been before.
COOKING UP A
Dream
CHEF DARIAN BRYAN’S CULINARY JOURNEY
FROM JAMAICA TO NEW YORK By Dylan Atilano
CURRENTLY RESIDING IN Buffalo, New York, 31-year-old chef Darian Bryan’s Jamaican-inspired cooking has been featured on the Food Network, ESPN, CBS News, and the Jamaican Observer. From humble beginnings to home-cooked meals for NFL players, Bryan’s journey in cuisine is a shining example of how hard work and a hunger for success can turn a passion into a full-time career.
Originally from a small town in rural Jamaica, Bryan was raised in an impoverished community. His home had no electricity or running water, and it was common for the region to experience hurricanes in the fall season. During one particularly rough storm, all of the family’s livestock perished. While Bryan’s family was able to dry their belongings, they had to sleep on wet beds. However, his family and neighbors found great comfort in cooking dishes like curry chicken for each other.
Bryan soon realized the power food had to bring people together. His culinary journey began at age 12 as he helped his mother cook every day for her takeout restaurant. This was the catalyst that sparked his passion for cooking. Three years later, Bryan’s mom gave him the keys to the shop, leaving him in charge. Here, he learned to make the local Jamaican cuisine that would forever influence his culinary art.
“ Cooking a meal isn’t a race but rather an art that takes practice to perfect.”
Bryan moved to the United States at 20 and landed in Buffalo, New York. Besides Buffalo’s freezing temperatures, one of the biggest differences Bryan noted compared to back home was that he no longer had to hunt for food. Instead, it was right at his fingertips at grocery stores. Soon after arriving, he enrolled at Erie Community College in Buffalo for culinary arts and worked as a cook at Denny’s. Here, he learned the ins and outs of American cuisine, which was completely new to him. Bryan would diligently practice his techniques outside of work, and after two years, he was promoted to manager at Denny’s. Determined to continue his culinary education, Bryan went to Buffalo State University and graduated with a degree in hospitality in 2017.
With a degree under his belt, Bryan became the head chef at Prima Café in Hamburg, New York. Unfortunately, Bryan never quite felt
like he fit in, as he rarely ran into other Blacks, who only made up one percent of Hamburg’s population.
After working at Prima Café for two years, a Black man walked into the restaurant for the first time during Bryan’s employment. Bryan struck up a conversation with the man. The following day, the man returned and asked who the head chef was. After Bryan explained he was in charge, the man revealed himself as Vontae Davis, the former Buffalo Bills cornerback, and offered Bryan a job as his personal chef. Although Davis soon retired from the NFL, he hired chef Bryan to cook a six-course meal at a New Year’s event that hosted 30 players from the Bills team. Bryan’s cooking was so well received that multiple players reached out to him afterward, requesting Bryan be their personal chef. Now, he cooks for several Bills players, including center Mitch Morse, running back Taiwan Jones, and wide receiver Isaiah Hodgins.
In addition to crafting homemade meals for Bills players, Bryan’s skills in the kitchen expand to other culinary endeavors. He’s the proud owner of his own boutique, The Plating Society, which serves up a luxurious dining experience. Bryan also owns Bratts Hill, a sitdown restaurant that serves authentic fast-casual Jamaican lunches and upscale Jamaican fusion dishes, where Bryan blends fine dining with the flavors of his homeland. Using bold flavors is essential when crafting recipes such as his signature jerk chicken and coconut curry halibut. Bryan also understands the importance of presentation, as people not only eat with their mouths but also their eyes. The secret that makes his cooking so sought after lies in his passion for food.
Bryan emphasizes several points for those looking to cook more at home. It’s important to stay patient during the entire process. Cooking a meal isn’t a race but rather an art that takes practice to perfect. Another key point is staying organized, which makes the cooking process more enjoyable. Additionally, investing in quality cookware will ensure that the tools last. The most important factor Bryan emphasizes is getting everyone involved when cooking. He encourages anyone interested in learning how to cook to reach out to him on Instagram @ chefdarianbryan for a copy of his e-cookbook.
Rolling the dice
THE AMERICAN SPORTS betting boom is a freight train hurtling down the track. Despite increasing calls for regulation, there’s no sign it will slow down as states in on the action continue raking in absurd sums. With climbing revenue, tax revenues climb too.
According to the American Gaming Association, in the first quarter of 2024, gamblers wagered a record $36.86 billion on sports, creating $3.33 billion in revenue—and $804.5 million in tax revenue. Sports betting behemoth New York tops the list; in the first three months of the year, it took in nearly five times as much revenue as Pennsylvania, trailing at #2. The Empire State also has the third-highest percentage of sports betting tax revenue to overall tax revenue at 0.7%. That’s thanks mostly to its 51% tax rate on online sports wagering, which matches New Hampshire’s for the highest in the country.
Other states are considering increasing their tax rates in response to this and similar success stories. Ohio, for example, doubled its levy to 20%, and New Jersey and Illinois are considering raising theirs
By Mike Taylor
from 13% and 15% to 30% and 35%, respectively.
It may be a race for the money, but not all locales thrive. When another state grabs a fork to take a bite of the pie, neighboring markets can be left wanting. These newcomers—including the previously untapped Maryland and Massachusetts—have pushed away Delaware, Maine, and Rhode Island from the table.
Maine has another problem, though some might call it a feature: It’s offering perhaps the most regulated market in the nation. Advertising with celebrities, professional athletes, or Olympic athletes is prohibited, and there are many other restrictions, including those designed to limit exposure to young people. Two sportsbooks offer online sports betting in the state, but there has been no in-person wagering.
Books, of course, want to make as much money as possible. When presented with unfavorable conditions, such as high tax rates or tight regulations, they say they will pass on the cost to customers by making odds longer or rescinding promotions.
SPORTS
In the first quarter of 2023, U.S. sports betting tax revenue was $619 million, or 0.18% of the country’s total tax revenue. The former figure jumped 30% in 2024—even without much input from the three most populous states: California, Texas, and Florida. The first two are among the states in which parimutuel, or pool, betting is legal but sports betting has not been fully sanctioned.
The windfall, however great, still accounts for just 0.23% of tax revenue across the U.S. Only in Montana does sports betting tax revenue surpass 1% of tax revenue. Even so, states can do novel things with the supplementary money. Colorado, for instance, is funding water conservation efforts, taking profits from a vice industry, and putting them in the pocket of an underfinanced sector in an increasingly dry West. This gambit has some legislators thinking twice, though. “How do I justify in my mind benefiting society from somebody else’s guilty pleasures that have the potential to impact their lives permanently?” state Sen. Cleave Simpson, the co-sponsor of a bill that would uncap this revenue stream, told the Post.
Sure, the rise of sports betting in the U.S. was predictable, but lawmakers seemingly saw dollar signs instead of an accompanying
increase in problem gamblers. The issue and its highest-profile victims have made headlines worldwide, partly because sports leagues were eager to cozy up to sportsbooks to get a cut.
One scandal haunted perhaps the best player in Major League Baseball, Shohei Ohtani, ahead of this season. He was cleared of wrongdoing, but his interpreter and friend, Ippei Mizuhara, was charged with bank and tax fraud and could spend 33 years in federal prison after stealing nearly $17 million from the two-way superstar to help pay off $40.7 million in gambling debts. The situation outlines the risks involved with legalized sports gambling, the foremost of which is addiction. One poll showed nearly half (45%) of people ages 18 to 34 have bet more than they should with an online sportsbook.
So even if sports betting tax revenues account for minuscule percentages of state budgets, sportsbooks are supercharging economies while fueling unhealthy appetites in problem gamblers. Advocates are calling on governments and industry leaders to address a gambling issue that is putting millions of people in danger while undermining sports betting’s growth trajectory. That could mean moving more of that revenue—the standard is 1%—into addiction services.

INGLEWOOD’S HIGH-TECH SPORTS AND ENTERTAINMENT MARVEL
INGLEWOOD’S NEWEST ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY SPORTING AND ENTERTAINMENT HUB
By Simone Harvin
LOS ANGELES’ NEWEST sporting and events arena, Intuit Dome, debuted in August 2024, choosing Inglewood as the destination for its $2 billion venue. The LA Clippers kicked off the inaugural season in its new home arena just two months later, a space that has also hosted Buju Banton, Future and Metro Boomin’, and Usher in its first six months, as the venue prepares to host the 2026 NBA All-Star Weekend.
The 17,700-seat multipurpose stadium promises an up-close-andpersonal experience unlike that of any other venue, from its tech-forward features to its fan-centered design choices. Built to ensure every seat has a good view, Intuit Dome’s vision stems from owner and chairman Steve Ballmer’s early discovery post-team acquisition in 2014 of the Clippers’ need for its own space to realize success. Previously sharing Crypto.com Arena with city rivals, the Los Angeles Lakers, meant shared dates across training facilities and game dates, with preferences often going to the Lakers. A decade later, Ballmer’s immersive live entertainment arena has given the Clippers a new home while revolutionizing how fans can interact during live events.
UNMATCHED FAN INTERACTION IN PRO BASKETBALL’S NEWEST STANDOUT ARENA
The venue’s design successfully breaks boundaries both as a premier basketball site and an entertainment venue that personalizes how fans engage.
When it comes to sporting specifications, Intuit Dome offers an impressive five basketball courts. The expansive complex includes two practice courts and a promo court for community and employee initiatives. There’s also the official game court, an 80,000-square foot outdoor plaza and court, and more than 86,000 square feet of training, medical, and player spaces.
The facility’s robust suite of technology partnerships is apparent across nearly every touchpoint of the fan experience. Through its partnership with AI-shopping platform AiFi, Intuit Dome streamlines concessions shopping at more than 40 food stands through facial recognition and automated billing based on what shoppers take from the shelves. Each seat has its own game controller-like buttons that control colors for arena visual effects and have interactive fan quiz capabilities. During breaks, the venue’s showstopping Halo Board delivers on the facility’s wow factor in terms of entertainment. Comprising 3,592 60-inch televisions spanning nearly an acre (38,375 square feet), the Halo Board is the largest two-sided display of its kind in an arena setting.
“We want the comfort and convenience of home, but the energy, excitement, and enthusiasm of being able to smell the leather on the ball as it’s moving around the court,” Ballmer shared in an official statement.
One of the chairman’s proudest achievements in the arena’s design is The Wall, 51 uninterrupted rows of seats near the visitor’s bench for the ultimate fan game experience. As the Clippers begin their 2024-2025 season, speculation around The Wall’s intimidating effect on visiting teams lingers in conversations about the new dome as Ballmer aims to build culture at home.
THE PROMISE OF CORPORATE INVESTMENT IN LOCAL COMMUNITIES
Following any major corporate investment into a community come understandable inquiries around how its presence will impact that community. On the positive side, the prospect of increased job opportunities and visitors in the area could lead to economic gains for locals and local businesses. However, the economic influx of fans don’t always trickle into the community, instead having the reverse effect due to traffic congestion and reduced sales as a result of event-related road closures.
Seemingly a response to its impact, the arena has proudly shared its benefits package to the city, a $100 million investment into Inglewood’s causes and infrastructure. Approximately 7,000 jobs were created during its construction, and it claims to commit to 30% of its permanent positions being filled by Inglewood residents. Intuit Dome has also expressed a commitment to an employment rate of 30% for minority and disadvantaged business enterprises, an opportunity that will ideally go to local businesses who can benefit from the financial stability the most.
Intuit Dome’s innovation is promising, with an architectural design that exceedingly elevates the standard for live sports and entertainment. A series of headlining concerts by music indsutry veterans Mary J. Blige, Keith Urban, and Nelly are slated for 2025, giving music fans good reason to support Inglewood’s growth. How the Clippers will perform this season in their new home arena remains to be seen, but this new location has all the intrigue to fuel the culture flames for basketball fans.

THE POWER OF FERNANDOMANIA REMEMBERING FERNANDO VALENZUELA
By Kirby Carroll
TO DATE, FERNANDO Valenzuela is the only MLB player to earn both the Rookie of the Year and the Cy Young Award within the same year. Throughout his career, the Mexican-born legend played over 17 seasons, 11 of them were with the beloved MLB team, the Los Angeles Dodgers. He was known for immaculate batting skills, hitting career home runs, and showcasing a rarely used pitch that excited and captivated crowds. It’s that consistent and impressive resume that propelled him to becoming a six-time All-star and winning 173 games, 2,074 strikeouts, and a 3.54 ERA. But it wasn’t just his on-field success that fueled his fame. His ability to connect with diverse audiences, willingness to speak out, and persistent work ethic are what continue to make him a cultural icon even after his passing.
Fernando Valenzuela was born to a family of 12 siblings in Etchohuaquila, Mexico. His passion for baseball started young, and by seventeen,, he was playing for the professional baseball team, the Guanajuato Tuzos. His talent caught the attention of a Los Angeles scout, and three years later, he was officially a Dodger. Valenzuela’s rookie season was historic: He finished with 13 wins and seven losses, leading the Dodgers to a World Series title.
Throughout his journey, the icon dealt with his fair share of trials, from injuries to salary challenges. In fact, at the beginning of his career,
after such a standout season, he was only making $42,500 - which today would be just under $70,000. Out of frustration, he refused to show up to Spring Training until he was paid fairly. While they didn’t end up meeting his demands, it still resulted in an increase of $350,000. While challenges like this continue today for many marginalized people, his courage to speak up shows his resilience on and off the field.
Fernando Valenzuela’s talent has lovingly been coined “Fernandomania,” and audiences from all over would travel to games to experience it first-hand. But he’s perhaps more praised for his ability to bridge the gap between Latino audiences and the MLB. He inspired hope for many in the U.S. and Mexico and introduced many to the sport he loved. According to Stan Kasten, team president and CEO of the MLB team, “He is one of the most influential Dodgers ever and belongs on the Mount Rushmore of franchise heroes.”
When his professional career ended, he used the next chapter of his life to become a beloved broadcaster and continue to speak and share his views on the sport that had been such an important part of his life. Fernando Valenzuela is a name that many grew up respecting and watching in awe. But many are still just discovering his talent every day. His life, efforts, and career are a testament to why he deserves the title of icon.
