The Helen MacGregor Plaza Community Visioning Sessions were held on September 10 and 12, 2015.

This was the first opportunity for residents to weigh in on their vision for our Plaza. It was a huge success!

Residents from the Santa Fe, Bushrod, Longfellow and Golden Gate communities participated, along with UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland volunteers and Berkeley residents. Thank you all for your input!

SUMMARY The communities of Bushrod, Longfellow and Santa Fe met on September 10 and 12, 2015 to conduct our first visioning sessions for the Park. The results have been compiled and scores noted on the following pages.

NEXT STEPS Included is a tentative schedule with a goal to acquiring a park design team.

The schedule reflects a desire to acquire as broad and inclusive a collection of talented individuals. As such our key next steps are: • Share on-line survey and workshop results with the professional landscape design community as a record and affirmation of the community’s vision for the character of the Plaza, • Continue to meet with landscape architects in the Santa Fe and Longfellow communities to spread the word of the upcoming Request for Qualifications.

ROLES + RESPONSIBILITIES Our goal is to craft a very inclusive process and take advantage of the expertise of each member the Task Force. We will rely heavily on Councilman Dan Kalb, the City of Oakland Contracting office, and UCSF Benioff Oakland Children’s Hospital. Areas of coordination needed are: • Assistance in writing Request for Proposals • Outreach to landscape and maintenance professionals • Assistance in locating grants + grant writing • Contract negotiations

In February 2015, the Helen MacGregor Plaza Task Force (hereinafter referred to as “Task Force”) initiated an online survey which was intended to gauge community ideas about the redesign of the Plaza. The survey was completed by close to 131 residents and is attached here as Appendix A. On September 10th and 12th, 2015, the Task Force hosted interactive community visioning sessions at the North Oakland Senior Center. The sessions were attended by over 50 people with the primary goals being to: • Provide an opportunity for those who did not participate in the online survey to provide their input; • Explore and affirm community members’ input; and • Brainstorm on improvements, solutions, and ideas for the Plaza.

This summary outlines the high-level themes from group discussions, the improvements desired and solutions proposed to achieve the community’s vision. This summary is organized as: I. Outreach Methods, II. Workshop Process, and III. Key Findings: Small Group Breakout Discussions.

Outreach Methods To promote and publicize these sessions, the Task Force conducted extensive and targeted outreach throughout the planning area. Outreach activities

included distribution of Appendix B (the postcard invitation) to the following markets: • Santa Fe Community Association & Neighbors and Longfellow Community Association meetings.

• Residences, businesses, and the North Oakland Senior Center.

• The Beat 10Y and Beat 11X Neighborhood Crime Prevention Council meetings.

• Social media, i.e. Facebook, Nextdoor and the websites of the Santa Fe Community Association and Longfellow Community Association.

• Regular email “blasts” to community association email distribution lists.

• Mailings and door hangers to residents in the Santa Fe, Bushrod, and Longfellow neighborhoods.

• Announcement in Councilman Dan Kalb’s monthly newsletter.

Workshop Process The sessions began with a welcome and opening remarks from Cathy Leonard, Co-Chair of the Santa Fe Community Association & Neighbors. Next, June Grant of blink!LAB provided a brief review of the session’s agenda and outlined the structure of the session for participants.

Cathy and June both served as facilitators and helped to moderate the conversation. The sessions then entered the break out phase.

Key Findings: Small Group Breakout Phase Session participants were divided into small groups of 5 to 6 people for breakout discussions. Three questions guiding the breakout groups discussions were: History/Education, Day/Night, and Air/Land.

Each group was assigned a topic which group member then discussed and recorded their ideas on post-its. The post-its were shared on large chart paper. After 45 minutes of brainstorming, each group selected a person to present a summary of their discussions to the entire group. After presentations were completed, each participant was provided four “dots� to vote on their favorite ideas from the three focus topics mentioned above.

A detailed summary of the small group breakout discussions is presented below. Based on the close relationship between the questions, there is some overlap in the responses. The overlap reinforces the synergy between the needs, solutions and opportunities identified by community members. The full notes from the discussions and summary presentations are available in the Appendix C.

Helen MacGregor Plaza Survey The Helen MacGregor Plaza Task Force has been formed to make improvements to Helen MacGregor Plaza: the triangular plaza located at the intersection of Martin Luther King Junior Way, West Street, and 52nd Street in Oakland (see map and images below). Partners include the Santa Fe Community Association & Neighbors (Santa Fe CAN), UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland (formerly Children's Hospital), a Bushrod District representative, the Longfellow Community Association (LCA), Councilman Dan Kalb's office and Rebuilding Together Oakland.
