–
Oskari finds the capsule. The President is in the capsule.
–
Oskari and the President run into the forest. They find a dead bodyguard.
–
Hazar finds the empty capsule. He goes after Oskari and the President.
A man comes out of the capsule. He has only one shoe on. He says that he is the President of the United States. His name is William Alan Moore. Oskari wants to save the President. But the President wants to wait for his soldiers.
1
Then they hear a helicopter. It is flying very low. The President thinks that his soldiers are in the helicopter. But Oskari sees Hazar. He knows Hazar is dangerous. Oskari and the President run to some trees to hide. They see the helicopter on the ground. Hazar and Morris get out. They check the capsule. But they see nobody! They only see the footprint of a small shoe. They want to find the kid and the President.
2
Oskari and the President run away. The President does not know what happened to the plane. He thinks Morris is his friend. Morris is one of the President’s bodyguards. Many years ago, Morris saved the President. He jumped in front of the President. Now Morris has a bullet close to his heart. He will be dead soon. Then Oskari and the President see Otis. He is also one of the President’s

bodyguards. He is dead. Now the President knows something is wrong. Oskari takes the President to his father’s hut. The terrorists won’t find them there. They make something to eat. The President asks what Oskari is doing in the forest. Oskari says that it is his birthday tomorrow. He says that he is going to be thirteen. And when you are thirteen, you have to shoot an animal. With a bow and arrow.
4
Oskari does not think he is very strong. But the President says that Oskari is very strong, because he is helping him. Without Oskari, he would be dead. He can trust Oskari. But he cannot trust other people. Now the President knows who the traitor is. It is Morris.

The President and I have to go.
‘Stop,’ I say. ‘We’re making too much noise.’ ‘What? No. We can’t stop now, kid,’ the President says. ‘Don’t call me kid. I’m Oskari.’ The President smiles. ‘Oskari. I’m William. But you can call me Bill.’ I think for a moment. ‘No. I’ll call you President.’ We walk on. The President starts talking. ‘I don’t know what happened.’ ‘I think those men shot your plane down,’ I say. ‘But how? My plane is Air Force One. Nobody can shoot it down.’ ‘Who is Morris?’ I ask. ‘He’s one of my bodyguards,’ the President says. ‘Morris saved me a long time ago. Somebody wanted to shoot me. He jumped in front of me. The bullet is still in his body, close to his heart. One day, it’s going to kill him.’ We see a man hanging in a tree. He’s dead. ‘Oh, no. Otis!’ the President says. ‘He’s also a bodyguard. Somebody murdered him.’ He takes Otis’s phone and his gun. He looks at the phone and says: ‘There’s no signal here.’ I look at him. ‘Come on. We’ll go to my dad’s secret hut. The terrorists can’t find us there. My dad will save us tomorrow.’ ‘Thanks, Oskari,’ the President says.

Happy birthday The President is asleep. I try to stay awake. Then after some time I fall asleep. I wake up when I hear a sound. It’s a deer! I jump up and take my bow and arrow. The deer walks away. I follow it. There it is! The deer is big. I want to shoot it. Then the President wakes up. ‘What is that?’ the President says in a loud voice. The deer runs away. I can’t shoot it. ‘I’m sorry,’ the President says.
It’s dark. We’re in an open space on Mount Akka. We’re close to Dad’s secret hut.
Then I see a big white box in the grass.
‘We’re going to camp here,’ I say to the President.
It’s a freezer box.
‘We can make a fire,’ I say. ‘The wind is right, so the terrorists can’t see the smoke.’
I look in the freezer. There’s the head of a dead deer in it.
‘I’m going to cook us some sausages to eat,’ I say.
There’s a note on it: To Oskari. Dad. Dad wants to help me. But I don’t want that. I want to shoot

I sit down. There are tears in my eyes.
‘Do you have to use that bow?’ the President asks.
‘Oskari?’ the President says. ‘Are you OK?’
‘Yes. It’s my Dad’s bow. It’s very old.’
I dry my tears and give the note to the President.
‘And it’s too heavy for you,’ the President says.
He reads it and looks at me. ‘I’m sorry, Oskari.’
‘It’s not,’ I say. ‘I can use it. No problem.’
‘My dad doesn’t believe in me,’ I say. ‘I’m not a hunter.’

Then I look up. ‘I hear something.’

In the air I see the helicopter and the freezer. The President is in the freezer. Hazar, the terrorists and Morris get into the helicopter. I have to save my friend. The helicopter engine starts. I run to the helicopter. I jump on the freezer. Then we fly away. There’s a nylon rope between the freezer and the helicopter. I have to cut it. I take my knife and start cutting.
I run to the top of the hill and sit behind a rock. I can see Morris. He’s in our camp.
Then I look up. I can see Morris in the helicopter. He’s looking at me.
The President sits down next to me.
Then Hazar also looks at me. He goes back inside the helicopter.
‘Morris is going to find us,’ the President says. ‘Oskari, you have to go. Go into the

woods, so that Morris can’t find you. Go, Oskari. Now! Go!’
I almost fall off the freezer.
Maybe he’s right. I look at him.
‘Hold on, Mr. President,’ I shout.
‘Goodbye,’ I say. Then I run away.
I start cutting the nylon rope again. I look down. We’re close to the trees now. I hope we don’t hit a tree.
But the President is my friend. He needs me. He believes in me. I can’t go. I have to help him.
Then the rope breaks and the freezer falls.
I turn round and run back.
I hit a tree and fall on the ground.
The President is talking to Morris.
I can’t see the freezer. Where is it? I have to find it, before Hazar and Morris

I hear the helicopter. Hazar is coming back. I have to be quick.
Then the helicopter lands and Hazar gets out.
Then I see the freezer! I run to the freezer.
‘Ah, there’s the President,’ he says. ‘Thank you, Morris.’
I open it and I see the President. He opens his eyes.
‘Great,’ Morris says. ‘Now kill him.’ He points at the President.
‘Oskari?’ he says. ‘Is that you?’
Hazar laughs. ‘No. I’ve got a better idea.’
‘You’re alive!’ I’m really happy. ‘Come out, quickly. Hazar is coming.’ I help the President to climb out of the freezer.
Hazar points to one of his men. ‘You. Put the President in the freezer.’
‘Oskari,’ the President says, ‘you’re a real man. Thank you.’
The man walks over to the President and puts him in the freezer. He closes the freezer and hangs it under the helicopter. ‘I have to save the President,’ I say to myself. ‘But how?’

ALL ABOUT THE DAY OF THE DE
If you’re invited to a Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) party, don’t freak out - it’s actually a really happy event! Dating back 2,500 years and celebrated mainly in Mexico and other parts of Latin America, Day of the Dead is a time for families to think about loved ones who have died, and remember all the great things about them. The two-day holiday is a festival of loud music, funky dancing, dressing up, eating sugary treats and having fun with your friends and family - whether they’re alive or dead!

One of the world’s first female pilots, Amelia Earhart broke records before mysteriously disappearing. Find out about the life of this adventurous pilot...
1897 Amelia Earhart was born in Atchison, Kansas, USA. Back then girls usually wore dresses, but Amelia’s mom let her wear trousers so she could play like the boys. Young Amelia loved American football, fishing and scary insects.
A group of 99 woman pilots from all over the USA came together to celebrate female fliers. They called their new organisation the Ninety-Nines and elected Amelia as their leader.
Amelia went to an air show in California, where she became interested in flying. She signed up for lessons and started training to be a pilot. She eventually bought her own yellow plane, nicknaming it the Canary. Cars… who needs them?
Sadly, during a round-the-world flight, Amelia’s plane vanished over the Pacific Ocean, and she was never heard from again. As the search for answers to what happened continues, one thing is certain – Amelia was an inspiration to pilots, women and girls everywhere.

LIFE ON ICE

DISCOVER HOW POLAR BEARS LIVE IN THE ARCTIC WILDERNESS...
WELL THIS IS EMBARRASSING. DINNER TIME!
“I didn’t have a Knife”
FACTFILE Across the frozen Arctic Ocean, and in parts of Canada, Alaska, Russia, Greenland and Norway.
Not so cute in this pic, is it? With all these cute photos of cubs, it’s easy to forget that polar bears are powerful hunters. They are the largest land carnivores on Earth.
Males can grow up to 2.6m in length. Seals, and sometimes walruses, beluga whales and seabirds. One or two cubs are born during winter in a specially dug snow cave.
POLAR PADDLE
Polar bears can smell seals from around 1km away. They wait next to breathing holes in the sea ice, then attack when the seals come up for air!
Polar bears are super good swimmers. Their thick blubber helps them float as they swim, using their front paws.
Polar bears’ white fur is actually transparent! Each hair reflects light. This helps the bears to blend in with their environment and sneak up on seals.
Forget Iow-fat diets! Polar bears need a 10-cm-thick layer of blubber to keep them warm in the frosty air and ice-cold water. This fat can also be used for back-up energy when they can’t find food.
© WIRED I EXTRA READING © WIRED I EXTRA READING
At 30cm across, polar bears’ paws are the size of dinner plates! They work like snow shoes, stopping them sinking into the snow.
Cubs stay with their mums for around two years. From her they learn how to survive and hunt on the ice. At birth they’re pink and around 30cm in length. Cute!
Based on: National Geographic Kids UK, United Kingdom
Long claws help polar bears walk on slippery ice and catch seals. Hair on the bottom of their feet helps stop them sliding, too.

CLIMATE CHANGE
“IT’s Too hot for me!”
© WIRED I EXTRA READING © WIRED I EXTRA READING
As our planet gets warmer, there is less sea ice in the Arctic during summer. This means polar bears have a smaller area in which to feed. They need to travel further to find seals to eat. This is a big problem for females who need to build up enough fat reserves to survive for eight months without eating.
