Handicap Cart Policy

The Underwood Golf Complex does have a Handicap Cart Policy. In order to obtain enhanced cart access due to physical limitations, one must submit the required documentation to the Director’s office which is then reviewed. Carts will then be entered into Handicap Mode at the time of play. Patrons are reminded that carts must be kept at least 30 feet from the putting surfaces. Also, carts are not permitted between the green and bunkers. We appreciate your cooperation.

LESSON TEE

By Kenny Meador, PGA

In this edition of The Lesson Tee, we are going to talk about good footwork, and how to spin those mid-range chip shots. Your footwork will determine a lot on how well you make contact with the ball. The number one mistake that most amateurs make is standing up on their toes, or falling back on their heels.

Footwork

Standing up on your toes usually results from over swinging the club, trying to get every ounce of power and distance out of the shot, and more times than not the exact opposite happens. Moving up on your toes will lead to poor contact, resulting in short, offline shots. The proper footwork sequence is as follows: during the backswing, your weight should transfer to your back foot, to the outside edge, but not rolling your foot, it should stay planted and stable. Your front foot should stay mostly planted. As you begin the downswing, your weight will move off the back foot to the outside of the front foot, and the heel. The back heel should slightly come off the ground, a sign of good weight transfer. If you can stay off your toes,

and not fall back on our heels, you will begin to make solid contact, and improve your ball striking.

Spinning wedges

When working with amateurs and their short games, the number one question I get asked is how to spin chip and pitch shots. Many factors determine how much a ball spins, but here are a few things to keep in mind. Use your big muscles. Your shoulders, chest, and legs are your big muscles. We want to take as much of the wrists out of the shot that we can. Too many times I see players hinge the wrists and then throw the hands at the ball in an attempt to spin the ball. This will lead to very inconsistent shots. Use your big muscles to turn back and through the ball. Play the ball a little farther back in your stance, this helps create a descending club head path, and traps the ball, almost pinching the ball against the turf, creating spin. Accelerate through the shot. If you deaccelerate through the shot you are almost guaranteed to chunk it, or skull it over the green Work on these few tips and you are sure to be hitting those nice one hop and stop shots in no time!

RULES CORNER By Kenny Meador, PGA

There has been a lot of discussion about the changes coming to the rules of golf starting in 2019. Many of these rules are already in effect on tour as local rules, but will be fully implemented next year. Most of these rule changes I am going to touch on were in an effort to speed up play, and make the rules simplified. Ball at Rest moved: The rules state, if you cause your ball to move on the putting green or during a search for a ball, it is a one stroke penalty. That has been changed, so that there will now be no penalty, as long as the ball is replaced to its original spot. Ball in Motion: Player’s ball in motion accidentally hits the player, player’s caddie, or attended to removed flagstick. This was a one stroke penalty (two strokes for hitting the flagstick), next year there will be no penalty. Penalty areas: Red and yellow marked areas were called water hazards. The new rule has changed the vocabulary to Penalty areas, and now desert, rock formations, jungle, or any area determined by the committee may be marked as a red or yellow penalty area. In this case, if you hit the ball into the desert and can’t find it and that area is marked, instead of taking a lost ball stroke and distance, you may take a penalty drop as you would out of a pond or lake. These rules have changed to help benefit the player, to play at a faster pace and to make the game overall more enjoyable.
