NOTE

Hello everyone! Fall is in the air and we have lots of spooky and holiday themed events to keep you busy! The Fort Bliss Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) Team has come together to bring you the best Halloween experience ever! Fort Bliss Sports, Fitness & Aquatics, Old Fort Bliss Replica, Art & Hobby Shop and more, have a variety of things to do throughout the month of October. Can you tell Halloween is our favorite holiday? But wait, there’s more to experience than just Halloween! We’re bringing back the Claus and Paws Fun Run for a second year, our delicious holiday brunches, and our annual Holiday Festival. We also like to celebrate by giving thanks and recognizing November as Month of the Military Family. As our Soldiers serve so do our families. November is a time to show thanks for the entire family that serves alongside their Soldier. Thank you all for your service! We love to see our Military Families featured in the magazine during the holiday season, so once again we ran our annual cover contest. We received an overwhelming number of responses! I hope you enjoy seeing your photos gracing the cover and inside pages of this fall issue of Bliss NOW! We wish you a fun, spooky, thankful and merry season!

See you there!

Just Try It BY ANETA VEEDMONT FAMILY & MWR

Hello Fort Bliss community! Summer is over and I am loving the Fall, my favorite time of the year! Well, we had a few changes to this column during summertime, Melissa, who initiated the “Just Try It” column, has accompanied her husband on a military assignment to Germany. So here I am, your new guide, a member of the Marketing team, and a military spouse, doing my best to feature what Fort Bliss MWR has to offer! I am very delighted to carry on and share my experiences about various classes from fitness to art, hoping that it will encourage you to try something new. I was recently looking to try something different to my regular workout routine. Being an avid runner/jogger, who also loves intense intervals/cardio, I wanted to try a lowimpact strength/flexibility combo workout. My colleague told me about a PiYo class, which definitely caught my interest. In fact, I have seen PiYo classes popping up everywhere, so I decided to give it a try, and I must tell you that I absolutely loved it! This class is ideal for anyone and everyone no matter your fitness level. It is an innovative yoga-influenced workout that builds strength, improves flexibility, and tones your muscles. PiYo combines the muscle-sculpting, core-firming benefits of Pilates with the strength and flexibility of yoga. At first, I was very uncertain of what to expect, since I

have never done Pilates or Yoga before. But I am happy to announce that I had a blast, and immensely enjoyed this 60-minute group fitness class. What I really enjoyed about my experience was that Kirsten, the class instructor, would demonstrate all poses before starting each sequence. Being new to the group, it helped me get a picture of what to do in each sequence. This workout also offers modifiers (easier movements), and the instructor showed them too, in case you need to adjust poses to your personal fitness level. I ended up following both the original movements and a few of the modifiers. The movements are choreographed to music, and you build onto the sequence as you go. Kirsten guides you through the training and encourages you to do your best. Although there’s no cardio involved, you do sweat a lot! If you decide to try it, make sure to bring a face towel. It definitely comes handy. You can also bring your own yoga mat, however, if you forget or prefer not to, there are a few yoga mats available at the gym. Best thing is you don’t need equipment at all, not even gym shoes! I did the class barefoot, which was a comfortable way to be able to do the workout. All in all, I loved the workout and thought it was a fun way to change up my routine. I do believe it’s a great option if you are looking to improve flexibility and want a different method for your strength training, or a way to simply start your training, since it is bodyweight-based. I was pleased with the low-impact, dynamic, flowing sequences that are actually meant to deliver real results, which I felt the next day. Yes, some of my muscles were a bit sore, but I recovered quickly. Challenge-wise, I didn’t find it extremely demanding which is precisely what I was looking for. It was well worth my time! I hope you’ve been inspired to give it a try, too! For more information about the PiYo class schedule or other Fort Bliss Group Fitness classes, visit bliss.armymwr.com.

Until next time,

EMBRACING CHANGE BY YOUTH SPORTS PLEX

Create change! At the Youth Sports Plex, change has been the key word for the past year. How to change the fitness facility and program to make it more inviting to children? How to create an atmosphere that fosters a change in a child’s perception of fitness? How de we encourage kids to want to come play sports with us? Well, it took a while to figure out the answers to a lot of those questions, and now, all that’s needed is for you and your children to come experience the changes! The newly renovated fitness facility has equipment that now fits the body of a 10-year-old child to an 18-year-old high school student. You will not find another installation with this type of fitness facility for youth anywhere else in the Army. The fitness programming is also everchanging with every hour of the day having a different type of class! This allows your child to release excess energy while learning proper

movement forms for everyday activities. Boredom is not an option as the Youth Sports staff are energetic and it’s contagious! Added bonus … all of our fitness classes are free! From soccer to baseball, volleyball to flag football and everything in between, our sports program is one of the best in the Army. Seasonal sports are offered at their originally scheduled times of the year, as well as additional seasons which allows children to play their favorite sport more often. One of the biggest changes in the sports program includes a brand-new sport for children to compete in, dodgeball. There are very few installations that offer dodgeball to youth, but Fort Bliss is now one of them! We’ve created the change, are you willing to take on the task of embracing the change? For more information, visit the Youth Sports Plex at 195 Chaffee Road or call 915-568-2617.

FIND SUPPORT, FRIENDS & GROW BY RACHELLE PHILLIPS FAMILY & MWR MARKETING

Do you have an upcoming deployment, range exercise or training rotation on the horizon? As a spouse or family member how are you supposed to keep up with all of the information provided if your Soldier is busy? Four words … Soldier Family Readiness Groups (SFRG). What is a SFRG? It is a command sponsored organization of family members, volunteers, Soldiers and Civilian employees who belong to a unit. Together they provide an avenue of support, assistance and a network of communication. “Family members of Soldiers are often asked to carry the load in the Soldier’s absence. Having to navigate the military lifestyle, in unfamiliar territory can become overwhelming, especially for a new family member,” said Wendy Ramos, a Mobilization and Deployment Specialist at the Family Resiliency Center (FRC). “Being part of the SFRG can help strengthen a family’s bond to their unit, prepares families to be resilient and helps build a network of support. Most military families live away from their extended family and friends forcing them to build a new norm. Having a strong SFRG can lessen some of the stressors associated with building this new norm. The unit SFRG can offer support by providing guidance, experience, resources, information and friendship.” For most people who tend to join any type of group, there are many questions that are asked. Such as, who can join? Is this a social group? Do they fundraise? SFRGs are open to all Soldiers and their family members. Family members of all ranks are welcome and encouraged to volunteer for their unit’s SFRG in either a leadership role page 42

or just as a participant. Classes such as SFRG Leader, SFRG Key Contact, SFRG Fund Custodian and Soldier Family Readiness Liaison (SFRL) are offered at the FRC. Visit bliss. armymwr.com, search SFRG to register for classes. The SFRG provides an opportunity to get together, support fellow family members and share information. In today’s day of instant information via the internet and social media some people might see it as outdated but that’s not necessarily true. These new “means” of communication are not always the most reliable or accurate. The best source of information would be directly from the command leadership, which is able to give the most upto-date information that’s been released. There are also times when your Soldier will be in an area that does not have access or availability to any type of communication or social media. The SFRG does fundraising to provide money for upcoming events and other approved unit needs, but that is not its sole purpose. There are specific guidelines that have to be followed when fundraising and spending the funds. With any type of group you join, you may run into cliques or gossip groups. This is inevitable however it should not interfere with the importance of what an SFRG group does for their unit and families. It’s always best to keep SFRG groups professional and friendly. So why not give it a try? Meet some family members in your unit. You already have a least one thing in common, each of you have someone you love in the military. To learn more about your SFRG, contact your unit. For more information about SFRG classes, call 915-569-5500. www.bliss.armymwr.com

the first day on the path to a tobacco-free future BY BRUCE GRAMLICH SPECIAL TO BLISS NOW

The Great American Smokeout

Since 1976, the American Cancer Society has hosted the Great American Smokeout, a public awareness event to encourage people to quit smoking. Organizations across the country use the event to encourage smokers to take action to quit smoking. “The Great American Smokeout is promoted by the American Cancer Society and is held on the Third Thursday of November each year in an effort to reduce the cases of preventable cancers, reduce second-hand smoke and improve the health of all Americans, said Martha Silva, Health Systems Manager for the El Paso Chapter of the American Cancer Society. This year is the 44th annual Great American Smokeout, and will be held Thursday, November 21. The event offers the opportunity for anyone to stop the use of tobacco for one day, with the belief if one can quit for one day then they can quit forever. Smokers are encouraged to use the day to map out a plan for a smoke-free life. According to Mokdad, JF, smoking causes more deaths each year than the following causes combined: Human Immunodeficiency virus (HIV), Illegal drug use, alcohol use, motor vehicle injuries, and firearmrelated incidents. Approximately 1 out of every 5 (480,000) deaths in the United States is due to smoking. While the smoking rate has dropped significantly, from 42% in 1965 to 14% in 2017, the gains have been inconsistent. Quitting smoking can be extremely difficult. Experts say the best approach is to start with a plan and seek support. Often it takes multiple attempts. Smokers are strongly advised to use proven cessation methods. Consult your healthcare provider for medical advice and support. To learn more and to start planning, visit www. cancer.org/smokeout. For local information on Tobacco Cessation, call 915-742-1346. @blissmwr

BY JACQUELINE SHIFLET, DSW, LCSW FAMILY ADVOCACY PROGRAM MANAGER

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. This campaign will help raise awareness, provide resources, and offer support to those currently affected by domestic abuse, or those who in the past have dealt with this issue. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence an average of 20 people are physically abused by their partner every minute. This equates to more than 10 million abuse victims annually. Children of domestic violence are three times more likely to repeat the cycle in adulthood. The Army Community Service (ACS) Family Advocacy Program (FAP) is committed to facilitating mission readiness through personalized education, prevention, advocacy and services that promote resilience for service members, civilians, military

Family members and retirees. FAP-Clinical is the primary proponent for social services, reporting, investigation, intervention, and treatment for the Fort Bliss community. We challenge the Fort Bliss community to help end the vicious cycle of interpersonal violence through a small call to action which involves reporting domestic abuse. Please contact FAP, law enforcement, medical health professionals, the chain of command, etc. to report an incident of abuse and become the agent for positive change. To report an incident of domestic violence, Domestic Violence Reporting Point of Contact (RPOC) are the MPs: 915-568-2115, ACS FAP: 915-568-9129, FAP Domestic Violence Hotline: 915-269-2013.

Honoring our fallen BY FAMILY & MWR SURVIVOR OUTREACH SERVICES

Our Fallen Soldiers have paid the ultimate sacrifice. Their Families deserve our respect, gratitude, and the very best we can provide. If you’re a surviving Family member, Survivor Outreach Services (SOS) offers you access to support, information, and services, closest to where you live, when you need it and for as long as you need it. The loss of a loved one often results in tremendous grief, which can be overwhelming. When faced with a tragedy, you may be wondering what direction to take. A local SOS is your link to finding the resources and answers that will work best for you. The local SOS coordinator can also help request and obtain copies of documents, navigate local, state and federal agencies, and direct you to additional Survivor resources. SOS offers group activities to help Survivors meet other Survivors with similar situations. Fort Bliss SOS offers a monthly group grief counseling session chaired by the Family Life Chaplain and Military Family Life Counselor, as well as individual counseling services. In September we honor our Gold Star Parents and our Gold Star Families with a bowling event. In April we honor the Gold Star Spouses and hold our annual Run For The Fallen event which is open to the Fort Bliss and El Paso Communities. These events are made possible with donations from the Coyote Golf Tournament and Wounded Warrior Golf Tournament. Another great event is the SOS Holiday Gathering which is always a huge success thanks to the generous donations of the American States Utility Services, Inc. and catered by Old Fort Bliss Replica. Last year children of the Fallen were in awe by the amount of activities packed into one Saturday morning. Events such as face painting, cupcake or cookie decorating, and picture frame crafts were made possible by the Mickelsen Library staff. There was also an opportunity to sit and visit with Santa. Jumping and obstacle course inflatables were also provided by American States Utility Services, Inc. Survivor Outreach Services is part of the Army Casualty Continuum of Care. It’s designed to provide long-term support to surviving Families of Fallen Soldiers. Our goal is to reassure Survivors that they remain valued members of the Army Family. For more information about Survivor Outreach Services, call 915-568-5970.
