Hello everyone! This issue we are springing forward! We have a lot in store for you this quarter with Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation (FMWR). We are working around the clock to bring exciting events, programs and even a parade for our Soldiers and Families to enjoy. Watch out for upcoming programs for toddlers to high schoolers such as dance classes, summer camps and sport leagues! Are you more into reading? There is the Summer Reading Program at the Mickelsen Community Library happening in June, don’t forget to register and enjoy their annual kick-off party. There’s so much more to do throughout our MWR facilities. There are annual awareness events such as the MCCASA Walk, Run for the Fallen, and Military Spouse Appreciation Day plus events just for fun like Mud Challenge, Designer Handbag Bingo, Egg Swim and our annual Easter-A-vaganza! There are many holidays we love to celebrate too such as Mother’s and Father’s Day with brunches and bowling, Armed Forces Day Parade and more! Just try it! Let’s “Pound” with Ripstix!!! Okay, so I hope you went out and tried that class you’ve been wanting to give a go. Did you like it? I hope so! Great job for trying it. So my second group fitness class and feature for this issue was POUND! Let me tell you guys, it was exhilarating! And, it was a great workout. I am a firm believer in taking a dynamic approach to fitness, which this class provided. Going into the class, I really did not know what to expect. I thought that maybe we would be playing drums, since I knew we were going to be using lightweight drumsticks, called Ripstix. These are specifically engineered for exercising. Then I thought, “how are we going to incorporate yoga and Pilates into this?”— as the class description stated. I was pleasantly surprised to find out, we spent a half an hour beating our Ripstix on the floor to a variety of different tempo songs. We exercised in a variety of

positions including upright, which used a lot of quad muscles, to a seated position with our legs straight out in front. Having done Pilates before, I recognized this position and let me tell you what, it really engaged and exercised my core. This was my favorite part about the class. In what seems at first to be a pretty physically laid back experience, I was delighted to discover that we really picked up the beat, and I actually burned 230 calories in that half an hour. That’s terrific, right? Ladies … and fellas too, if you are looking for a relatively low impact exercise experience, I really encourage you to try this class. The session I went to is Tuesdays from 5 to 5:30 p.m. at Soto Physical Fitness Center (PFC). Please refer to our bliss.armymwr.com website to see about any additional class offerings. Cheers everyone and let’s have fun getting and staying fit!

Milo visits Fort Bliss Veterinary Services

Hello Friends, Milo here, your favorite Family and MWR mascot! It’s been crazy weather here at Fort Bliss, one day it’s sunny and the next it’s chilly outside. Well, summer is coming and I can’t wait to get out and enjoy the outdoors, maybe do some traveling! It’s also a time for some of my friends to start getting ready to leave Fort Bliss and move to another place. It makes me sad to see them go, but happy to know that they have each other. Their upcoming moves made we start to wonder what I would need to do, if I had a permanent change of station (PCS) move, too. So, I met with my friends at the Fort Bliss Veterinary Services and here’s what I found out! Me: What are the requirements for pets when we PCS with our owners to another duty station in CONUS (Continental United States)? Fort Bliss Veterinary Services: All pets should be micro-chipped with a 15 digit International Standards Organization (ISO) compliant chip, in case you get lost during travels. Make sure you are current on all vaccines, such as rabies, distemper, Bordetella and preferably a heartworm pills and flea and tick prevention. Vaccines are the same for cats except for Bordetella and heartworm. Also, you should carry current immunization records especially if you plan on staying in a hotel along the way. Me: What should my pet parents plan for if they PCS? Fort Bliss Veterinary Services: Depending on where your pet parents are going, some overseas PCS moves can take up to 180 days to prepare. We can help prepare you and your pet parent to go overseas and there won’t be any quarantine stays when you leave. Me: Let’s say my pet parents are not able to take me, when they PCS. What options do they have? Fort Bliss Veterinary Services: The best thing to do is see if a family member can care for you until they return, or stay for a while and send you to your pet parents at a later time. If that’s not possible, try to find a good family for you. If all else fails, a rescue would be best. I hope it never comes to that, but I know my MWR Family will always put me with a good home. Me: If my pet parents @blissmwr

are moving in CONUS with me, what documents or vaccinations do I need, so I can travel with them? Fort Bliss Veterinary Services: It really depends on where you are going, each overseas country has their own specific rules, as does Hawaii. Any deviation from these guidelines could cause the country to send your pets back to the states! We recommend contacting us at Fort Bliss Veterinary Services as soon as you know or get an idea that you will be going overseas. Also, pet parents can look up the requirements to anywhere in or out of the United States on the USDA-APHIS website, visit https://www. aphis.usda.gov/aphis/pet-travel. Me: What are other things that can be addressed for my pet parents? Fort Bliss Veterinary Services: Pet owners need to realize that pets are not just cargo and need special care to travel on a plane. Also, each airline has specific requirements. It is best to look into all these areas as soon as you get notification of an impending move. This is all great information to know, if I were to ever PCS, which I don’t see happening any time soon, I will be prepared or if some of my friends need help I know where to send them … Fort Bliss Veterinary Services! Until next issue, I’ll see you soon!

Paws and kisses,

Social Dinner honors a wave of support BY MARLO BRESTAR FAMILY & MWR MARKETING

Palm trees, bright colors and comradery was in full force at our annual Sponsorship and Advertising Dinner in February. Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation (FMWR) employees came together with our supporters from Fort Bliss and the El Paso community to take a moment to reflect on 2018. We focused on all the great things that were possible, because of our relationships and the generous support we receive from these organizations. Lots of work, effort and support go into all the amazing programming that is offered here at Fort Bliss. We are able

Special recognition was given to the sponsors that provided the highest level of monetary and in-kind support. USAA, 5Star Nutrition, Fort Bliss Water (ASUS), Tropicana Homes, Twin Peaks, Western Technical College (WTC), Deloitte Consulting LLP, Semper Fi Fund and Refuel Agency took home the top awards, however, all of our sponsors provide crucial support and we couldn’t do what we do without them. Here’s to another great year, looking forward to what we can accomplish together in 2019.

MARCHING ON YEAR TWO! Armed Forces Day Parade carries on tradition BY FAMILY & MWR MARKETING

The Armed Forces Day Parade is back for the second year! It’s bigger and better than ever! Fort Bliss Family and MWR is marching down Sheridan Road and back in time as we bring back Armed Forces Day to its days of glory. Many Soldiers, Families and El Pasoans remember when Armed Forces Day on Fort Bliss meant an afternoon of fun in the sun on Noel Parade Field with military vehicle displays and demonstrations, chili cookoffs, music and entertainment. It was a day to honor past and present members of the Armed Forces and also an opportunity to show off all of Fort Bliss’ awesome capabilities to our El Paso neighbors. Last year we decided to revive this tradition! This year we are bringing back the very popular parade of floats, marching bands, military vehicles, community organizations, and horses through West Fort Bliss. It will end at Noel Parade Field with an Armed Forces Day celebration to remember. We encourage all the homes that reside on the parade route to participate in the house decorating contest. Family and MWR will present ribbons to the first, second and third place winners to be displayed on their door. If you’re a resident whose house isn’t directly on the route we welcome you to be a part of Armed Forces Day and dress up your home with patriotic decorating. We want to make sure that our installation looks its best and most patriotic for all our guests from the city. This is an event you don’t want to miss, so set May 18 aside for some memory-making time with your family and friends. Parade begins at 10 a.m. on Pershing Road with activities to follow at Noel Parade Field. Parade applications are still being taken until April 22, so if you want to be part of this awesome new tradition, register NOW! For more information or to get your applications, visit bliss.armymwr.com, search: parade or call 915-568-2554. @blissmwr

Brunch, Anyone? BY ANETA VEEDMONT FAMILY & MWR MARKETING

Brunch originated in late 19th century England, when Guy Beringer, a writer, proposed an idea for a new meal in his essay “Brunch: A Plea.” Served around noon that combines breakfast items such as tea and pastries to start off, and then moving into heavier meats, brunch has become a great social event. It gained popularity in the 1930s in the United States, and today it is a wonderful get together to mark any celebration. With the spring season in full bloom, we get an opportunity to celebrate Easter or treat mom or dad on their special days. If you are looking for an enjoyable time in an elegant venue with delicious food, the Centennial Banquet & Conference Center will host a series of Brunch events from April through June. Offering a fancy setting with beautifully adorned tables draped in white linen clothes, crystal glasses and elegant utensils, each guest will feel pampered and appreciated during the upcoming brunch events celebrating Easter, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. Easter Brunch will take place Sunday, April 21, Mother’s Day Brunch will be Sunday, May 12, and

Father’s Day Brunch is Sunday, June 16, all from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Centennial’s Head Chef AB who has been with Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) for more than 20 years, explains that brunch events are great opportunities to enjoy delicious food and create wonderful memories. “It all starts with how many people will attend, and it gives me an idea for the menu for each event,” said Chef AB. There are four cooks on the team, who help Chef AB with specific tasks to start preparing brunch. During brunch, a variety of food is offered to include breakfast, lunch and dinner items all combined together. It is a buffet style, and there are typically four different meat stations to choose from, a made to order omelet bar, a salad bar featuring delicacies such as smoked salmon, different pastas, green salads, or fruit, and mixed vegetables. There is also a luscious dessert bar that features favorites such as chocolate cake, cheesecake, hot cobbler and even an ice-cream station. A selection of drinks is also offered including unlimited mimosa cocktails. So what’s not to enjoy?

“The kitchen is the heart of the facility.”

The buffet is full of food and everyone can make their own plate. “We do ask for brunch reservations to be made in advance so we can accommodate everyone,” said Tabitha Bohn, business manager at the Centennial. Tabitha has worked for Family and MWR for close to 16 years, and has been managing the facility for the past six years. The facility offers seating that can accommodate big groups of 30 to 40 people, as well as small groups. Children of all ages are welcome. “We offer a discounted price that is $11.95 for children ages five to 10 years. Children four years and younger eat free. We encourage people when making reservations to let us know if children will be attending, so we can prepare high chairs, if needed, and this way we can best accommodate each reservation,” said Tabitha. Each brunch offers attractions such as complimentary face-painting or balloon animals for everyone. In addition, the Easter Bunny makes an appearance during Easter Brunch. There is a free photo opportunity with the Easter Bunny, and customers are encouraged to use their own cameras.

The Centennial Banquet and Conference Center is the largest catering facility in the Army, and second largest in the city of El Paso. “The kitchen is the heart of the facility. The chef ’s prior military service and his culinary skills are unmatched by anyone I’ve ever met in any facilities that are in the city. The service and quality of the food offered at the Centennial is the main reason customers should choose our facility for events,” said Tabitha. The core staff that has been working in the facility for 10 to 40 years, take pride in what they do. “Every event they do, every guest that comes, whether it is a young couple getting married or a General that comes in, we want to treat everyone with the same kind of respect and service. I value my team for everything, they treat the facility like it is their home,” said Tabitha. For brunch reservations, or more information about event packages, call 915-744-8427.

Taking advantage of your training BY MARY ESTRADA FAMILY & MWR MARKETING

There are more than 900 employees that make Fort Bliss Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) the best organization in the Army. Each person serves a crucial purpose in our overall mission of taking care of the morale, welfare and recreation of Soldiers and their Families. That’s why we take the onboarding process for new employees so seriously. We want to ensure that during their first days on the team they feel welcomed and appreciated. We want them to know that MWR is not just a job, but – for some – a lifetime career. Investing in an employee’s training and career advancement can pay huge dividends in the future. That’s where I come in as the MWR Training Coordinator. As part of the Fort Bliss community, there are different training opportunities available to all of our employees. Part of my job is to schedule all training classes for MWR. I ensure that each employee gets all of their mandatory training done before they report to their facilities. This includes assisting them in setting up their accounts and scheduling an appointment to get their Common Access Card (CAC). During these first few days of employment, we set the stage for a smooth transition into their assigned facility. New employees are ready to hit the ground running! Many different training opportunities are available

to MWR employees. It is my job to make sure that all team members are informed of any and all professional development trainings scheduled for future dates. I provide as much information as possible, in the hopes that it will encourage employees to take advantage of these trainings that will benefit them in their current positions and could potentially lead to career advancement. All employees fall under a certain career program, which is determined by their position description. Some of the different training opportunities provided include the Civilian Education System (CES) training. CES has four different levels of training designed to enhance the Army Civilian Workforce. CES trainings are a combination of online and residence courses and are opened based on your pay grade. These trainings are centrally funded meaning that the Army pays to train you. That’s how important employers, like MWR and the Army, feel that training enhances and benefits the future workforce. I hope this information encourages our employees to stop by the Training office and get informed about all of the free training opportunities MWR has to offer. For more information, call MWR Training at 915569-6071.

ADVENTURE

QUEST BY MELISSA JOHNSON

FAMILY & MWR MARKETING

If you are an adventure enthusiast, you have come to the right place! Rumor has it that El Paso is this desolate and dusty little town with nothing to do. If you just moved here, you’ve probably heard this. Well guess what? I am going to tell you about many fantastic outdoor adventures you can go and do. The list I am about to share with you is a compilation of things that can be experienced in either a day or a weekend. All of these destinations are less than four hours from Fort Bliss. They can be fun for a couple, or the whole family. My best advice to you is to embrace living in the Sun City with open arms and enthusiasm, go out and enjoy all of the wonderful opportunities that await you here. I am going to focus on sharing with you my favorite trips to do in spring and summer. First on the list is jet skiing and paddle boarding on the Pecos River in Carlsbad. The water is so clear and blue, it reminds me of Lake Tahoe. Gorgeous! Don’t forget to stop and see Carlsbad Caverns too, as well as the beautiful waterfalls at Sitting Bull Falls Recreation Area. Next is a stop at Balmorhea State Park for some snorkeling and scuba diving. Did you know Balmorhea is one of the deepest natural spring fed pools in the United States? Pretty cool I think … since we are in the desert! Not certified? Inquire with our Aquatics Training Center, for more

@blissmwr

information about scuba certifications. If you are liking the water idea, which I bet you are, head up to Elephant Butte for some boating and then a stop at Riverbend Hot springs. Guess what? They are situated right on the Rio Grande, so there is some pretty cool scenery as you sit there and soak! If you are into camping and the smell of fresh air and pine trees, head up to Ruidoso for some time floating on Grindstone Lake. Don’t forget to take the walking path around, as you will find some pretty deep and beautiful swimming holes. There are also many campsites, RV sites, and lodging options for your weekend getaway. If you like history and art, check out Faywood Hot Springs and the Gila Cliff Dwellings, the historic town of Tombstone, Arizona, Hueco Tanks and the Pictographs, and Poncho Villa State Park. Maybe you’re an advanced motorcycle rider, you can ride the Rim Rock Trail in Cloudcroft, or go extreme at Big Bend National Park. Looking for a more local option? Well, McKelligon Canyon is great for walking or cycling. There’s also the Franklin Mountain trails to hike or mountain bike. Sneed’s Cory at Tom Mays Park is a great local area to do a little rock climbing. Need the equipment for it? Well, Outdoor Recreation has you covered. They rent all sorts of equipment needed for your adventure! Have you ever stood on the highest point in Texas? Guadalupe Peak is the place to be; it’s a nice day trip to hike. Be sure to pack snacks and lots of water, you will find it very useful once you reach the top. The view is incredible to see! Horseback riding is another activity to do in the area, there are some great options in West El Paso for lessons and camps.

Summer reading takes

BY FAMILY & MWR LIBRARIES

Mickelsen Community Library launches, “It’s Showtime at Your Library,” Summer Reading Program! It will start with a pizza kick-off party, June 1 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Staff will be available to help register families and explain how to log books and track minutes with the Mickelsen Community Library online system. Registration is open throughout the entire program, but all participants must log or track books by July 20. Throughout June and July, the library will host a range of free activities for children, teens and adults who encourage and support a love of reading. Participants can also win prizes for reaching their reading goals. Prizes come in the form of tiered reading incentives and a prize bag at the conclusion of the program, which will end July 20. There will be a Summer Reading Party July 27 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with extreme inflatables, hot dog cookout and more! “We’ve planned a wonderful program for kids to make the library a great place to read, learn, and discover what’s available for their enjoyment,” said Library Technician Crystal

Mitchell. “The Summer Reading Program is a great way to have fun while improving reading comprehension.” There’s also a serious side to summer reading. Research has shown that children who read over the summer break have a better chance of retaining their reading skills than those that do not. “Studies also indicate that students who read recreationally outperformed those who don’t. Students tend to read more when they can choose materials based on their own interests,” said Library Director Rachel Arizaga. “Mickelsen Community Library is committed to supporting lifelong learning and educational enrichment for all families.” The library will have books and DVDs available for checkout to highlight the theme of this year’s summer reading, “It’s Showtime at Your Library!” These materials will showcase all types of performance, from movies and theater to puppetry, dance, poetry, music and more. To learn more about the Summer Reading Program at the library, call 915-568-6156 or check out the library’s website at bliss.armymwr. com, search Fort Bliss Libraries.

Military Kids ...

tell us your story BY SIMONE WENDLANDT-HENDRICKS FAMILY & MWR SCHOOL LIAISON

April is the Month of the Military Child and the School Liaison Office would like to celebrate the achievements and recognize the sacrifices that our Military students make every day by sharing their stories with our community. “Military Kids Can,” is this year’s essay contest theme hosted by the School Liaison Office. Local campuses are invited to use this opportunity and shine a spotlight on the military connected students in their care. Students will have a chance to make their voice heard, while helping others understand their experience. The winning essays will be chosen with the following guidelines in mind, all submissions must be related to the question: “What does it mean to you to be a military child?” Entry must have no less than 100

words and no more than 500 words. The contest will run through the end of April and campuses are encouraged to submit their students’ entries to the School Liaison Office. Top entries from each age category – elementary, middle, and high school – will win a cool prize and will be recognized in the summer edition of Bliss NOW Magazine. Children celebrate BY ANETA VEEDMONT

FAMILY & MWR MARKETING

Earth day, celebrated annually on April 22, is a day when we all reflect how we impact our planet. First celebrated in 1970, it gave birth to the environmental movement, which started the need to address and bring to light serious environmental concerns. Originally foreseen as an American event, Earth Day, was taken to the international stage in 1990 and is now celebrated in over 190 countries. On this day, we try to take the time out of our busy schedules and ponder how we all can live happier and healthier lives in tune with nature. Military children at Fort Bliss start learning about gardening or how to give back to our planet from an early age. Fort Bliss Child & Youth Services’ (CYS) Child Development Centers (CDC) provide educational gardening activities to teach children about environmental awareness, and help them develop skills such as understanding, responsibility, self-confidence and love for nature. At Milam CDC, toddlers, preschoolers and pre-k students are all afforded the opportunity to experience gardening with their peers and teachers. They have grown different things to include zucchini, pumpkins, tomatoes, lettuce, watermelon and flowers. Parents are also invited to help maintain gardens over the weekends. They are offered parent participation points, which go towards a discount off their monthly tuition. “It is a great partnership and develops a rapport and comradery between our families

and our center,” said Melissa Sanders, Milam CDC director. Educational gardening sharpens children’s reasoning and discovery skills. Children learn about the science of plants (life cycle), animals (how to protect our crops from bugs), weather (rain and its impact on crops), the environment (why crops grow better in different climates), and nutrition (how the crops we grow are beneficial for us). Main CDC is currently getting a new children’s playground with trees and a garden. Because of that, children will be tasked with helping construct and plant seeds in the garden. They will be given opportunity to be creative and use their skills to decorate things such as milk jugs, pots or a tire to plant seeds in. “Preschoolers will experience watching the life cycle of a plant, interact with the natural world and connect to nature”, said Emma Donaldson, Main CDC director. By giving children the responsibility to take care of our garden, they also shape their reasoning and discovery skills, as they learn how important the light, soil, drainage and other environmental factors are to the earth. Gardening is a great way to teach our children that their actions have an impact on our environment. “Our children participate in a gardening project every year, and they get the opportunity to plant flowers and vegetables. This opportunity allows them to care for their plants and watch

www.bliss.armymwr.com

them grow, which develops their sense of ownership and responsibility,” said Dalia Poole, Replica CDC director. Exploring nature is part of the facility’s integrated curriculum. This curriculum is designed to introduce children to new experiences and provide them with a wide-array of hands on activities. Some of those activities develop children self-expression skills through art, writing, or painting. Replica CDC offers children nature walks once per week, as part of their exploration and discovery experience. Field trips are also a vital part of scaffolding children’s learning experiences, therefore, the center organizes field trips that

@blissmwr

help children develop a deeper understanding of the topics that they are being introduced to. East Bliss CDC begins preparing for the Earth Day as early as February by planting vegetables and flowers in their individual garden beds. This is when, the teachers along with the children, begin weeding their gardens. Once completed, the children along with the teachers start planting the seeds of their choice. After the planting process is finished, the children are encouraged to tend the gardens which includes various activities such as watering, weeding and caring for their plants. With all the excitement of gardening, this becomes a child-initiated activity. “An Earth Day activity is conducted in each individual classroom which involves the children learning about taking care of their planet and the plants that grow in their garden,” said Heidi Woodall, East Bliss CDC director. Logan CDC has a community garden at the rear side of the facility. Many parents assist with the gardens by planting, weeding, and watering on the weekends while the classroom students tend to the gardens during the week. “On Earth Day we celebrate by planting herbs and vegetables in the gardens, cleaning up our playgrounds with the help of our families and planting flowers in our flower pots and flower beds in the playgrounds,” said Melanie Fazio, Logan CDC director. This year the facility hopes to have the playground renovations completed so that children can celebrate the new and improved playground area during the Earth Day festivities with their families. Earth Day is an opportunity to show and teach our children about the need to preserve and protect our environment, so what better way to celebrate Earth Day than to go out and explore nature.

Behind the Scenes:

Survivor Outreach Services BY NATALIE HINOJOS

FAMILY & MWR MARKETING

It’s the worst that can happen to anyone … A loved one has passed away … You struggle to find a way to cope with the loss, but you feel empty inside. There seems to be no life left in you, there’s no thought of what to do next, just the grief of loss. For Military Families it can be very overwhelming. They move from one post to another and are – for the most part – away from their families. When losing a Soldier, spouses, children and parents need guidance on what to do next. Luckily, Survivor Outreach Services (SOS) provides assistance to Military Families in times of need. Let’s go Behind the Scenes of SOS and find out what they provide to Soldiers and their Families when tragedy happens. SOS, part of the Army Casualty Continuum of Care mission, is designed to provide longterm support to Surviving Families of Fallen Soldiers. The main goal of SOS and the Army is to reassure Survivors of fallen Soldiers that they will remain valued members of the Army Family. “The mission of Survivor Outreach Services is to advocate on behalf of all Families who have suffered the loss of a Soldier and to educate the community about the

Survivor Outreach Services Program,” said Helen Barrientes, program manager and support coordinator with SOS. “The Fort Bliss SOS program strives to build a unified support program which embraces and reassures Survivors that they are continually linked to the Army Family for as long as they desire.” There are currently two Support Coordinators at Fort Bliss, Helen and Karla Sanchez. They work diligently to provide the best care and help find proper resources and answers that work best for Surviving family members. SOS is managed by the support coordinators and they make it their mission to be there for those in need. Helen and Karla are able to provide direct services, information, referrals and recommendations; in addition, they connect Survivor families with support groups, spiritual resources, bereavement and financial counselors when needed. They also help families request and obtain copies of documents, and navigate them to local, state and federal agencies. Helen and Karla are the shoulder to cry on, the encouragement to keep going and the guidance to the right path when it seems there is no one to help. It takes a lot of patience, determination and strength to assist in any way they can for local Survivor Families here at Fort Bliss. Not only do they provide all these resources such as bi-monthly newsletters, information briefs and social activities. They also have annual events that bring Surviving families together honoring their Fallen Soldiers. One noted event that is

@blissmwr

open to the public is their Run for the Fallen non-competitive memorial run/walk. SOS has worked with the Fort Bliss MWR Sports program for five years to honor Fallen Soldiers. The run/walk begins with a ceremony remembering Fort Bliss and local El Paso Fallen Soldiers as their names are read aloud by Survivor Families. Then participants can either walk or run the 5K or one mile route. This year, it will be held April 13 starting at 8:30 a.m. at Field of Honor. Pre-registration is open at Stout, Soto and Milam physical fitness centers until April 7 and online at raceroster.com until April 10. Late registration and packet pick-up is April 12 from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at the Freedom Crossing Food Court, a $10 late fee will be incurred. On-site late registration will be from 7 to 8:30 a.m. at Noel Field. What’s very unique about this run are the handmade mile markers. Survivors take the time to decorate the markers to honor and remember their Fallen Soldiers. This year SOS has collected over 200 boots to be decorated and lined up along the streets in display. “Our Fallen Soldiers have made the ultimate sacrifice. Their Families deserve our respect, gratitude and the very best we can provide,” said Helen. “SOS offers access to support, information and services, when they need it and for as long as they need it.” In the Bliss NOW Summer issue, we will be going “Behind the Scenes” with Desert Strike Lanes.

Embrace date nights again BY ANETA VEEDMONT

FAMILY & MWR MARKETING

When was the last time you and your partner, had a date night, just the two of you? Well, parents, we have a solution for you. Not everyone knows that the Army Family Child Care (FCC) program offers a variety of child care options that includes full-day, part-day, hourly, special needs, before and after school as well as evening and weekends. FCC providers offer multi-age programs for children ages four weeks through 12 years old. Because these days, parents find themselves with an additional challenge when it comes to spending quality time together, the evening and weekend child care is a great option to consider. “Within FCC, we offer weekend and night care every day and every weekend,” said Maloney Cairns, Child and Youth Services FCC Director. “Fridays and Saturdays are popular days, as this is when parents want to go on a ‘date night.’” It is important to highlight that parents can expect to receive the same quality of care in an Army FCC home as in an Army Child Development Centers (CDC) or School Age Centers (SAC). FCC providers receive the same training and support as Child Youth Services (CYS) facility based staff, and follow the same curriculum used within the CDC. Children can expect to do a magnitude of activities during the child care hours. Not everyone knows how beneficial the child care service through an FCC provider can be for parents. “I believe the advantages of FCC when compared to the CDC or any facility based program are the convenience of hours we offer, a smaller more personal environment, and the experiences and opportunities to explore and develop as an individual child,” said Cairns. “All of my providers are skilled when working with children with special needs and receive the same trainings as any CYS employee. We provide ‘a home away from home’ for all of our patrons.” In order for patrons to use an FCC provider, the same rules apply as for any other CYS program. Most of the

page 42

providers normally operate from 5:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. If a parent wants or needs child care for nights or weekends, they book with the FCC provider directly. The cost for nights and weekends are $5 an hour until midnight and from midnight to 6 a.m., it is $6 an hour. For more information or to receive an updated list of FCC providers, call 915-568-4198 or visit the office at 3503 Story Road. Office hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. In addition to FCC providers, parents can also take advantage of a monthly program offered by Fort Bliss Parent and Outreach Services, Parents Day Out. It is offered one Saturday a month from 1 to 11 p.m. at Milam CDC for children ages six weeks old through kindergarten; and Milam SAC for children in the first grade through fifth grade. The cost is $5 per hour per child. The following times are set for the second quarter of the 2019 year for Parents Day Out Program April 6, May 4 and June 1. To make reservations for Parents Day Out child care, call Milam CDC at 915-744-7877 or Milam SAC at 915-744-2274. If you are looking for Saturday child care for youth in grades 6 to 12, you can use either the Milam or Replica Youth Centers. Milam Youth Center (MYC) is located at 10960 Haan Road, it is open on even Saturdays of the month. Replica Youth Center is open on odd Saturdays of the month, and located at 5037 Sheridan Road. Both facilities offer a wide-array of activities for teens and youth. For more information, call Replica Youth Center at 915-568-3253 and Milam Youth Center at 915-744-2449. All children who are participating at any of the child care centers: FCC, CDC, SAC and youth centers must be registered with CYS. It can be done at Parent Central Services, located at 1743 Victory Avenue. Mom and Dad here is your chance to plan ahead and enjoy a nice evening out, especially with Mother’s and Father’s Day coming up. Make sure to take advantage of the child care options available at Fort Bliss CYS.

Appreciating our Military Spouses BY RACHELLE PHILLIPS FAMILY & MWR MARKETING

It’s that time of year again as we prepare to get one more move under our belts. It’s an inevitable part of military life, but also one that makes us extremely resilient. As a military spouse our lives seem to rotate around our service member and their career. As much as that affords us an opportunity to see the world, it also breaks our hearts to leave the communities and people we love. For that reason, I enjoy celebrating Military Spouse Appreciation Day each May. Not many people know the feeling of watching your love one walk away for months at a time. Being left behind means that you become the one permanent, consistent thing in your family’s life. You are the parent, friend, caregiver, housekeeper, chauffeur and nurse. All of that comes before you can even consider yourself or your career. Military life brings many challenges and is not for the faint of heart, but it also brings many rewards. All things considered, I wouldn’t change it for the world. I have been able to make friends that have become family, and my support system. For these reasons and more, on May 23, 1984, President Reagan declared May to be National Military Appreciation Month. He recognized the sacrifices of Military Spouses and chose to celebrate YOU! Military Spouse Appreciation Day has been celebrated on the Friday before Mother’s Day every year since his declaration. Military Spouse Appreciation Day provides an opportunity to show gratitude to the unwavering support that military spouses show to their service members and their country every single day. Installations all around the world will be celebrating, this May, with special events and programs to honor military spouses. Fort Bliss military spouses will have an opportunity to enjoy a day of pampering at the Family Readiness Center (FRC) May 10 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Registration is free, but required and can be done by visiting bliss.armymwr. com, search “Pampering the Military Spouse” or call 915569-5500. This event is open to military spouses ages 18 and older. Childcare vouchers are available for children registered with Parent Central and can be arranged with the Main CDC, call 915-568-5689.

it’s more than giving a

COIN BY TEPHANIE HOPPER

FAMILY & MWR VOLUNTEER

Over the years, as an Army Volunteer Corps Manager, I’ve have had great pride in the development of the Fort Bliss Army Volunteer Coin; but volunteer recognition is more than giving a coin. Don’t get me wrong coins are great, however, volunteer recognition is so much more. To be recognized for an accomplishment, especially volunteering, is an honor, so how do we truly honor our volunteers? It’s a big deal and the recognition needs to be effective. It should be effective to ensure volunteers feel as if they’re a part of your unit, organization or nonprofit. When I say, “recognition,” I’m not just talking about simply thanking volunteers, although that’s essential too. What I mean by recognition is the act of a formal and informal favorable attention given to an individual to provide a sense of appreciation. Organizations should have an all-encompassing volunteer recognition plan. Volunteer organizations should not have to wait until an annual event or when the volunteer moves or leaves the organization to acknowledge their volunteer’s efforts. Primarily volunteer recognition should be balanced and should acknowledge contribution and effort, progress towards goals and

page 44

blissNOW

APR | MAY | JUN

excellence. Recognizing participation and effort means we should be able to acknowledge that the effort of showing up is a big deal. An all-encompassing recognition plan may include a token or certificate for participating for a year, a yearend celebration, or other efforts to acknowledge those who made and kept their commitment. A recognition plan can also include thank you cards, a special parking space for outstanding volunteer of the month and recognition on social media platforms. It might even include be a phone call or text to tell the volunteer that others have spoken highly of them or a phone call or text from the commander or the executive director thanking them for their contributions to the unit or organization. Why is volunteer recognition important? No matter if you’re a volunteer or a paid staff member, everyone likes to be recognized for their efforts. Volunteer recognition is extremely important because after all, they are working for free. Volunteer recognition is an important component of volunteer retention. When volunteers feel valued and important, they are more likely to feel connected to the program and continue their involvement. Recognition is Retention.
