Just Try It Hi everyone, So yesterday, I realized that my husband’s inspiration for the name of this column “Just Try It” was perfect! Here’s why….I “just tried” SPRINT at Stout Physical Fitness Center (PFC) and it was AWESOME! Why was it awesome? Several reasons! If you are like me, I’m guessing one of your number one reasons for working out is to slim down, right? Especially as we approach summer. Let me tell you, this class was 30-minutes of intense calorie burning bliss! SPRINT is a High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) workout on a stationary bike. There are different types of choreography (training) your instructor may choose, all focusing on building strength, power and speed. Not only is this fitness option low impact, you are also able to get your cardio and retain your muscle. HIIT workouts on a stationary bike are also utilized often by those who are looking to “cut,” which in the fitness industry means, to get really lean without losing muscle. Another one of the reasons I really liked this class was that it was only 30 minutes long. Short enough to where

page 18

blissNOW

JUL | AUG | SEP

I stayed interested and not long enough for me to start dreading it. I loved the idea of being able to go during my lunch break and then have the entire evening, or rest of my day free. Also, unbeknownst to me, this class was held in a really nice cycling studio, which I had no idea we had here at Fort Bliss. We pedaled to the beat in style — in the dark with LED lights, that was a really awesome surprise. The music was really fun too and our instructor, David, was very friendly and motivating. Knowing now that Fort Bliss’ Group Fitness program offers this class, I will definitely be going back. If you would like to discover an incredible way to burn a lot of calories in a short time, while building cardiovascular endurance and strength in a quick 30-minutes, you’ve got to try this class! For more information about Fort Bliss’ Group Fitness classes and schedules, please visit bliss.armymwr.com.

Cheers as always,

in!

Hello friends, Milo here, your favorite Family and MWR mascot! I’m here to tell you about our annual event just for dogs. It’s a time to play in the water and enjoy the sun with our parents, it’s Doggy Swim Day! Are you ready to take over the Community Pool? Join us on September 7 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., as my friends and I get the whole pool to ourselves! The cost is $2 per dog and guess what … our humans get in for free! All well-behaved, vaccinated furry friends are welcome to attend, but remember only doggies and their parents, ages 18 and older, are allowed in the pool. Children have the whole summer in the pool; this is our day to enjoy it. Since we love to be safe, no children ages 5 and younger are allowed at the event. Last year was a blast, there were so many happy pups, me included, running around the pool! It felt great jumping into the cool water with my furry friends. Some of us were scared to go in, but wearing our life vests and having our parents swimming with us was great. This year, we are looking forward to seeing the best swimsuit, best trick and best look-alike contestants! There will be lots of prizes and giveaways to win. Get ready for a fun summer this year! Stay cool, drink lots of water and enjoy the sun! Paws and Kisses,

@blissmwr

Desert S

Behind the Scenes with:

BY NATALIE HINOJOS

FAMILY AND MWR MARKETING

The rumbling sound of a bowling ball echoes down a lane, then … CRASH!! Someone just made a strike. Where did the game of bowling come from? Well, believe it or not, bowling has been around for centuries, dating back to 3200 BC. According to bowling history, Sir Flinders Petrie, a British anthropologist, discovered a primitive version of a child size bowling ball and pins in an Egyptian grave. Throughout history, the form of bowling has transitioned from a religious ceremony in Germany to the modern game it is today. Let’s go Behind the Scenes with Desert Strike Lanes to see how they’ve kept the game rolling down their lanes through the years. “When you see a bowling center you think they are all the same,” said Don Diego Aguilar II (Coach D), business manager at Desert Strike Lanes. “There are a number of things that bowlers can look forward to here. Whether it’s kids free bowling games, dedicated leagues in the fall or tournaments.” Desert Strike Lanes is 52-lane bowling center, the largest in the Army. Inside the facility you’ll find a gaming center with pool tables, arcade games and a foosball table. The Strike Lounge is available for events such as birthday parties, unit functions and more. The Strike Zone Snack Bar serves pizza, hamburgers, sandwiches, nachos, kid’s meals and they even have Healthy Army Community selections on their menu. Desert Strike Lanes has 25 to 40 employees currently working at the bowling center, keeping it functioning efficiently every day. There are mechanics who work page 22

diligently to keep the lanes well-maintained, if a lane is down, they quickly fix what they can, so patrons can continue with their game. There are cooks and servers working in the kitchen whipping up food orders for patrons who crave one of the many menu items. “We are great at setting up large tournament-style bowling, assisting bowlers to get the proper equipment they need and serving a variety of food in the kitchen, even gizzards,” said Aguilar. The managers wear many hats to fill positions that require their assistance. “I work the night shifts and we have different clientele than what you would normally see during the day,” said Jannette Caswell, assistant manager at Desert Strike Lanes. “Most of my nights involve working with league bowlers and their secretaries, doing what needs to be done in the office, as well as working with the employees in their various departments to assist where needed.” In the Pro Connection, pro shop technicians help fit patrons with the right bowling ball, customize it for them and detox (resurface) their seasoned bowling balls too. The Pro Technicians customize the bowling ball by measuring the grip to give the best fit, feel and performance for a bowler. “Every bowler’s hand is unique, it is a process that looks to ensure proper fit,” said Aguilar.

www.bliss.armymwr.com

Strike Lanes “This is something that is more in-depth when the process is performed for bowlers with physical hand limitations.” The detoxing service is provided for bowlers who want or need to revitalize their bowling ball. “The detox process removes oil that is absorbed into the cover of a bowling ball and limits its performance,” said Aguilar. “This process submerges the ball in a liquid setup that draws out the oil. The ball is then cleaned up and the surface of the ball is treated back to the out-of-box surface as recommended by the manufacturer.” There are a lot of programs happening at Desert Strike Lanes. Some exciting upcoming events include Kids Jubilee, the Pink Widow Challenge Sport League and Unlimited Thursday night special. There are specials occurring each month, some continue all summer long. “We also provide things such as personalized professional coaching,” said Aguilar. “There is just about something for everyone and many new things are coming in the future.” Desert Strike Lanes is constantly improving to provide higher quality, unique entertainment and a better experience for their patrons. One awesome upgrade is coming this summer, Hyper Bowl from QubicaAMF! This is a new type of bowling that challenges bowlers to up their skills. Think of it as Top Golf strategy, but with bowling. Desert Strike Lanes has installed Hyper Bowl into lanes 1 through 14, patrons will be able to sign up and try this new type of bowl game soon. @blissmwr

“We strive to provide many types of services for our bowlers,” said Aguilar. Working around the clock, employees and managers see why their job is so important to their patrons. “Just seeing a bowler coming in and watching them rolling their ball,” said Aguilar. “Sometimes they will ask for pointers, coaching tips and knowing that I have a chance to help them excel or just a have a bit more fun, makes each day end with a smile!” “For me, watching the families bowl and have a good time is the best part of my job,” said Caswell. “I love seeing the kids enjoy themselves. We have a Fall and Spring Youth League, by the way!” Desert Strike Lanes provides many different services for many customer needs. Come on out to the bowling center, join a league, take advantage of their current specials or try out their new Hyper Bowl! In the Bliss NOW Fall issue, we will be going “Behind the Scenes” with Rod and Gun Club. Also check out “Beyond the Pages” flyer on page 3. The longest voyage FIFTH ANNUAL CARDBOARD REGATTA

BY NATALIE HINOJOS

FAMILY & MWR MARKETING

Are you ready for the rough waters at Community Pool? Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation (FMWR) will set sail for its fifth annual event … Cardboard Regatta! Start gathering your sailing materials, find your first mate and look forward to the long voyage! Here’s what you need to do to participate in this creative event. First, visit the MWR website at bliss.armymwr.com, search Cardboard Regatta and register your team. Come up with the silliest or cleverest team name, then pick out the division you and your mate will be participating in. There are three categories, Adult and Child (ages 5-9), Youth (ages 10-17) and Adults (ages 18 and older). All boats must have two sailors — a captain and first mate — each must remain in the boat at all times. Registration is open now through Aug. 16. Don’t wait until the last minute, be sure to register, then gather all the materials needed to build your boat. This year’s approved construction materials are changing, only cardboard and duct tape will be used. Duct tape can only be used for the seams, please do not cover the whole boat with duct tape. Don’t worry about making or buying oars, MWR will provide life vests and oars for you to use. The fun begins while creating your masterpiece. There will be three award categories: Most Creative, Longest Voyage and Biggest Shipwreck. The Most Creative title begins with your team name and includes theme, boat decorations/sailor costumes, and overall attitude. Longest Voyage means your boat is seaworthy enough to make it down and back across the Community Pool without capsizing or forcing its sailors into the water. Biggest Shipwreck is the most fun award because if, at any time, your boat begins to sink … make a big splash out of it! Be as dramatic as you can be, because you could win Biggest Shipwreck! With all of this fun you’re probably wondering what the cost is to join this event, well guess what … it’s free! Come out, get creative, and set sail at 1 p.m., Aug. 24 at the Community Pool, located at 253 Club Road. Don’t forget to register online at bliss.armymwr.com, search Cardboard Regatta. Race rules will be provided online and they will be enforced. For more information, call 915-568-2554.

Re-Energize Your Body! BY ANETA VEEDMONT

FAMILY & MWR MARKETING

The summer season has already started, and with scorching desert weather, we all look for ways to beat the heat. Well, the best way to quench your thirst is having a cool smoothie made with fresh fruit! Who wouldn’t love that? Smoothies aren’t the only way to nourish your body with essential nutrients, but they can definitely help pave the way for good health and enjoyment throughout the hot season. Located at Soto and Stout physical fitness centers (PFC), our MWR Snack Bars serve a wide selection of beverages to satisfy every customer. You will find smoothies, healthy shakes, and protein or fat burner shakes on the menu along with a large variety of items such as energy drinks, breakfast items or sandwiches. If you are into fitness or exercising, the Snack Bars also offer pre-workout drinks to keep you hydrated and push you through the workouts. “We’re striving to build a healthy and strong community. We use the highest quality protein and products in our protein shakes. They are also made with real fruit,” said Rose Strong, snack bar manager. Customers looking to follow a healthy exercise plan can take advantage of a variety of protein shakes offered. These shakes are an excellent way to provide a body with a quick boost of nutrients. Increased protein intake helps @blissmwr

rebuild damaged muscle tissue and is an essential component for weight loss. Higher protein helps to control appetite, that can help you eat fewer calories throughout the day. The Snack Bars are convenient for customers, who choose to work out during their lunch break. They’re accessible for customers to grab a quick bite before heading back to the office. The Snack Bars offer many healthy snacks including some 5 Star Nutrition options. “We are proud to carry 5 Star Nutrition to give military members and their families the highest quality products to help them reach their fitness goals. Carrying 5 Star Nutrition products at the Snack Bars is also more convenient for our customers,” said Strong. A discount will be offered to military members and their families when purchasing 5 Star Nutrition Products. Snack Bars also offer a punch card, get one punch for each smoothie or shake you purchase at regular price, and then your seventh one is free. In addition, Happy Hour is every Thursday and Friday between 2 to 5 p.m. with 50% off on smoothies and shakes. The Snack Bars are open seven days a week, hours may vary. Celebrating our sixth year BY NATALIE HINOJOS FAMILY & MWR MARKETING

Arriving at Biggs Park I’m waiting in line with my ticket, ready to enter the venue. When it’s my turn in line, workers place a bracelet on my wrist. Entering the gates, I’m immediately surrounded by white fences with festive pennants hanging down. It guides me toward the pavilion filled with food trucks, a photo booth and a merchandise table. I take it all in smelling the delicious food, that’s ready to be served, and hear the Polka music playing. Undecided on what to eat, I head straight for the beer station to collect my stein — which is already filled, foaming (a little) at the top — waiting to be picked up. I take a sip and look for a place to sit and enjoy the entertainment by Terry Cavanagh and the Alpine Express band. The crowd continues to fill the area; 7 o’clock rolls around and the German Air Force Schuhplattler dancers are lining up to enter and start the festivities. The Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation (FMWR) Special Events and Marketing teams work diligently for months to bring this event to Fort Bliss and El Paso. It is a thoroughly enjoyable experience for all ages, which is why it is celebrated all three days. Two days are for adults, ages 18 and older only and Sunday is our family day, open for all ages to enjoy this fun cultural experience. There are some exciting changes happening this year at Oktoberfest. Friday will be a fun night with the first ever Oktoberfest Triathlon. Contestants will participate in three separate events where the winner will be crowned King Ludwig’s Lord or Lady. The winning Lord or Lady will receive a crown, a seat at the throne — where they can invite 7 of their friends to join them — and bragging rights for the year. The events that comprise the Oktoberfest Triathlon consist of a keg toss, bull ride and stein hoist. Once you have purchased your Friday Night Oktoberfest ticket, you can register for the triathlon at bliss.armymwr.com. Another change to look forward to are the commemorative steins! This year they are lighter to carry all in the same – one liter – size; instead of the heavy breakable glass, they will be acrylic! We wanted to go with a lighter weight mug that will be useful

beyond Oktoberfest and not a dust collector on a shelf. You’ll be able to pick up your stein at the beer station already filled, just purchase your choice of beer and head on over to the food! Tickets are $25 and it includes your stein. This is only for Friday and Saturday nights, Sept. 20 and 21, ages 18 and older, must be 21 and older to drink. Sundays are free — no tickets required — for the whole family to celebrate together and steins will be available for purchase, while supplies last. The traditional music will continue with Terry Cavanagh and the Alpine Express band performing throughout the night. The German Air Force Schuhplattler will also carry on their talented dancing entertainment for all to enjoy. Don’t miss out on all the fun at Oktoberfest, Sept. 20-21 from 6 p.m. to midnight and Sept. 22, from noon to 5 p.m. at Biggs Park, located at 11199 Sgt. Major Blvd. Pre-sale is July 4 at the Pop Goes the Fort event, it’s $5 off for the first 100 tickets sold. Regular ticket sales will start July 8 at both Leisure Travel Services (LTS), located at Freedom Crossing food court and at the Soldier Activity Center (SAC) and online at eventbrite.com. For more information, call 915-588-8247.

LEADING BY BY NINA A. NOAKES FAMILY & MWR BOSS PROGRAM

Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers (BOSS) is a program for single Soldiers, geographical bachelors and foreign-service members. The BOSS program helps the installation address the well-being and morale issues for single Soldiers at Fort Bliss. Fort Bliss BOSS aims to motivate Soldiers to make the most of their time here. BOSS is Soldier-driven, with a foundation encouraging military members to strive to improve the three pillars – Quality of Life, Community Service and Recreation and Leisure – that impact their lives. Quality of Life: This pillar is one of the most important because it enhances a Soldiers living environment, healthy lifestyle, as well as enables a Soldier’s personal growth. Community Service: The second pillar focuses on developing Soldiers who are more involved in their community. Volunteerism is crucial to the BOSS program, because it helps build relationships with fellow Soldiers and community members through teamwork.

EXAMPLE

Recreation and Leisure: The third pillar is equally important as the first two. We like to take the Soldiers out to enjoy their time here at Fort Bliss. To reward all of their hard work and dedication, BOSS trips are planned out-of-state or in the surrounding areas. Through BOSS monthly meetings, Soldiers are able to contribute ideas about activities or trips for BOSS to plan, set up and execute. One annual event we like to enjoy is BOSS Bash! This fun event is an opportunity to celebrate single Soldiers and reward them for their diligent efforts and commitment throughout the year. It builds a sense of camaraderie, challenges them with sporting games, fun water inflatables and prizes. Mark your calendars, Sept. 13, 10 a.m. at Biggs Park, located at 11388 Sgt. Major Blvd. It’s going to be a full day of good times and relaxation! It is free to attend and open to Soldiers, ages 18 and older. This is our way to say, “Thanks!” The BOSS council continues to work hard to improve and to better provide a place for Soldiers to feel welcomed and enjoy the events we bring to the table.

Babysitters in training BY FAMILY & MWR SKIESUNLIMITED

Is your teen ready to develop babysitting skills and knowledge? SKIESUnlimited offers a babysitting class designed to help middle school and teenaged youth learn what it takes to become a responsible, caring, trustworthy, competent, capable and safe babysitter. This course was created in 2003 by Army Child and Youth Services (CYS) and National 4/H outreach. The objective of the program is to not only familiarize youth with the responsibilities of Babysitting, but also to provide information needed to become caring and responsible sitters. It also teaches them skills and techniques needed to become competent sitters, and develop the confidence needed to handle any situation that could happen while babysitting. Teens are able to develop a positive attitude about caring for children and it helps prepare them for the business aspects of babysitting. SKIESUnlimited provides eight classes that are an hour and half long. One class, first aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), is 6 to 8 hours long. The classes are currently being held at the Replica Youth Center (RYC) from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. The cost is $35 and it includes Red Cross first aid and CPR certification, which is held on a Saturday. RYC is located at 5037 Sheridan Road. In accordance with the Policy of Memorandum #14: Supervision of children, after completion of this class, youth ages 13 and older may go on the Fort Bliss Babysitters list. The list is available at CYS Parent Central for Military Families needing babysitters. SKIESUnlimited, located at 131A Doniphan Road, is currently undergoing building maintenance. Regular classes are taking place at 3508/3509 Ellerthorpe Avenue until further notice. For more information, call SKIESUnlimited at 915-568-5544/8336.

“Military Kids Can,” was this year’s essay contest theme hosted by the School Liaison Office. Students were invited to help celebrate the achievements and recognize the sacrifices of our military students. Many campuses used this opportunity to shine a spotlight on the military connected students in their care. Students had a chance to voice their stories while helping others understand their experience. The winning essays were chosen with the following guidelines in mind, all submissions had to be related to the question: “What does it mean to you to be a military child?” Entry essays were expected to have a minimum of 100 words and no more than 500 words. Each and every entry was unique and inspirational, just like the students that wrote them. We were very appreciative of the students hard work and want to thank them for sharing their experiences with us. Our judges had a hard time picking just three essays, but the following young authors left them speechless. We are very excited the share the winners with you. The winning essays are available to read online at bliss.armymwr.com/programs/ school-support-services.
