Bliss MWR praises sponsors BY MARLO BRESTAR

FAMILY & MWR MARKETING

Oh me, oh my! Ring masters, clowns, and wonderful people alike came out to our annual sponsorship and advertising social in February. It was a fun-filled night with games, food and camaraderie – whether you hit it big on the High Stryker, got a bullseye at the axe throw or were able get the ring on the bottle – which was nearly impossible – fun was had by all!

page 20

APR | MAY | JUN

Many walked away with giant stuffed animals and other great prizes. We, here at the sponsorship office, walked away with much more. Our hearts were full and content as we were able to recognize so many who contribute to the success of Fort Bliss events and Family programming. There is no way to truly express our gratitude, but this yearly social gives us a brief and meaningful moment to pass along how grateful we are for everything our supporters do all year long. This year’s platinum sponsor was awarded to our largest supporter USAA and our gold award winners were AMG, Casa Kia, EP Dentistry 4 Kids, Deloitte, Semper Fi Fund, Refuel Agency, Phoenix Truck Driving, Special Operations Fort Bliss and L&F Distributors. There were also many awards given for silver, bronze and community partners. Thank you all who contribute in various ways to Fort Bliss Family and MWR, we are looking forward to another great year and couldn’t do what we do without Thank you all of you. Sponsors

Happy Birthday

Milo!

Happy Spring! I am not sure if everyone is tracking, but my birthday is coming up May 3! In honor of my 5th birthday — that’s 35 years old in human years — I am asking you to open your heart and donate to a shelter, Humane Society or pet charity of your choice. Did you know that local shelters not only look for the typical pet food and toy items? They also look for other things; such as trash bags, newspaper, apple sauce, highlighters, batteries and more. You can always go to their individual websites and find out what they are in need of, or you can really pull at my heart strings by paying it forward and giving a cash donation. It doesn’t have to be a lot, every little bit helps. It would be totally PAW-some and make my heart happy if you would do

@blissmwr

this is honor of my birthday — I bet you would feel good about it too. I also hope you plan on joining some of my furry friends at our upcoming Yappy Hour play dates! We know that everyone has different schedules, so pay close attention, because we are gathering either on Thursdays or Fridays this year! Our upcoming themed events are “Some Bunny Loves Me” April 23, “Carnival” May 29 and “Luau” June 25. Pet parents join us for food and drink specials, and for my special furry guests there are free snacks for us! There will be prizes for the best dressed contests, games and tons of fun!

Paws and kisses,

GOLD STAR FAMILIES HONOR THEIR FALLEN BY HELEN BARRIENTES

FAMILY & MWR SURVIVOR OUTREACH SERVICES

The Service Flag is an official banner, recognized by the Department of Defense, for Families to display who have members serving in the Armed Forces during any period of war. It has a white field with a red border, and a blue star in the middle. The blue star represents a service member in active-duty. If there is a gold star displayed, it represents a service member who has been killed in action or has died in service to their country. The community recognizes the price the Family has paid in the cause of freedom. The Survivor Outreach Service (SOS) program was established in 2009 with the primary goal of fulfilling the Army’s commitment to Families of Fallen Soldiers. SOS encourages surviving Family members “to be continually linked to the Army Family for as long as they desire.” The SOS staff provides various types of support on a continual basis helping Survivors with adaptation and change at different points in a Survivor’s life. This support promotes Survivor resilience and fosters a Survivor’s well-being. There are several ways in which we recognize our Gold Star Families: The State of Texas offers state license plates, the application is available at TexasDMV.Gov; the Gold Star Installation Access card, the Gold Star Decal (both available at SOS), and on the installation SOS offers designated parking spaces. The Army recognizes that no @blissmwr

one has given more for the nation than the Families of the Fallen. In April, SOS hosts a run/walk to pay tribute to those Soldiers who have made the ultimate sacrifice. The sixth annual Run for the Fallen will be April 18 starting at 8:30 a.m. at the Field of Honor. This 5K non-competitive run/walk started with a concept brought forward by the Surviving Families of Fort Bliss and El Paso community. Survivors can be a spouse, child, mother, father, sister, brother, step-sibling, guardian, and/or in-laws of the Fallen Hero. Survivors, as the term implies, encompasses a diverse family unit. The run has brought together Families from all over the city of El Paso and parts of New Mexico, representing all branches of our Armed Forces. Honoring and respecting the Survivors whose everyday life has changed with the loss of their Soldier. Families are encouraged to participate in preparing mile-markers in honor of their Soldier and placing them along the race route. Gold Star Families will be recognized by the black event shirt worn the day of the race so show them your love and support along the course. Registration can be done at Stout, Soto or Milam physical fitness centers until April 14. The cost is $20 per person. Late registration is available April 17 from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at Freedom Crossing food court, with a $10 late fee incurred. For more information, call 915-568-5970. APR | MAY | JUN

Find your next job at the fair BY DENISE CAROTHERS FAMILY & MWR ARMY COMMUNITY SERVICE

Looking for employment? When a military family goes through a permanent change of station (PCS) move, it can be challenging for military spouses, but also for teens and young adult dependents. Being a working teen can be beneficial; they can earn valuable work experience, build connections, have extra spending money and build confidence. El Paso is a growing city and can be quite intimidating for those who are not familiar with the area. To help ease this frustration, the Employment Readiness Program (ERP) at Army Community Service (ACS) coordinates one hiring fair each year, for DoD ID

cardholder teens and young adult dependents. Employers from the El Paso community are able to participate in the hiring fair, provided they are hiring within their business and are able to list what vacancies they are recruiting for during registration. The next hiring fair is May 2 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at ACS, located at 2494 Ricker Road. This event is free and opened for DoD ID cardholders, ages 15 to 21. All attendees must show their military ID at the door. In order to make sure Fort Bliss teens and young adults are ready for the hiring fair, ACS is offering two hiring fair prep classes. Teens will learn how to write a rĂŠsumĂŠ, create a 30 second commercial and sharpen their interviewing techniques specific for a hiring fair. FROM VOLUNTEER TO CAREER BY TEPHANIE HOPPER

FAMILY & MWR ARMY VOLUNTEER CORPS

Volunteering offers a lot of benefits regarding your health, both mentally and physically. It connects you to others, brings fun and fulfillment to your life and can even help advance your career. Although volunteer work is unpaid, it has the benefits of improving communication skills, problem solving, task April Walters management and organization. One volunteer, April Walters, proudly served four years as a cook in the Army in hopes of becoming a chef. However, being a cook was far from being an actual chef. She then decided to change her career path to become a financial counselor, but achieving this ambition would not materialize overnight. Before accomplishing the goal of becoming a financial counselor, she juggled being a mom and a wife (which she lovingly continues to manage), a student and a volunteer. Volunteering is one role that has made a tremendous impact on her career change. While stationed abroad with her husband and daughter, April volunteered in many capacities, from being a Soldier Family Readiness Group Leader, and a Key Caller to the Care Team Coordinator. “These opportunities brought a family element to the unit and built unit camaraderie,” said April.

Through these volunteer capacities, April gained public speaking, management and fundraising skills. She also gained self-confidence in her abilities and pushed herself to the next step in realizing her career goal. She decided to pursue an Accredited Financial Counselor Certification after leaving the military and moving her family to Fort Bliss. To receive this certification, it was necessary for April to volunteer so she began volunteering with Fort Bliss Army Community Service (ACS). From this volunteer opportunity, she learned financial terminology, gained hands-on experience to assist Soldiers with financial concerns from dealing with debt management to teaching financial preparedness classes. Volunteering also connected her to the community and allowed her to show her work ethic. When asked if she encourages spouses to volunteer, she emphatically answered, “Yes, absolutely! Why not?” “It allows spouses to get out of the house, especially when their service members are frequently deployed; volunteering can lead to making new friends and gives them a sense of accomplishment. Volunteering can also lead to a job, gaining an education, and becoming stronger as a family.” From volunteer to a newfound career, April is now an Accredited Financial Counselor employed with Fort Bliss ACS as an Army Emergency Relief Specialist. ACS ENHANCES READINESS FOR SOLDIERS & FAMILIES BY U.S. ARMY

SPECIAL TO BLISS NOW MAGAZINE

When our Armed Forces were fully engaged in a two front war there was a stability/ predictability to the OPTEMO that involved our Families. Now, with having pulled many of our forces out of Iraq only to see us reengaging in an asymmetrical fashion, the level of predictability for our Soldiers and Families is difficult to grasp. It's the "unknown" that is creating greater tensions within our military communities. Now more than ever, Army Community Service is needed to provide a robust offering of services enabling our commanders and Families to better cope with these uncertain times. Personal demands facing Soldiers and Family Members may adversely impact training effectiveness and could foster an unsafe environment. Due to today's technology, Soldiers in combat zones have near-daily contact with Family Members. Soldiers inundated with Family challenges from back home may become distracted when going on a mission, and their ability to detect the enemy-aroundthe-corner degraded if they are otherwise emotionally occupied. ACS works hard to help Soldiers and Families address those personal issues through the entire deployment cycle. In addition to its direct services, ACS acts as a conduit to reduce or eliminate shortcomings in areas involving legal, administrative and Tricare matters as well as child care issues.

Spouse and overall Family Member attendance at predeployment briefings is critical as the majority of information provided is utilized by those remaining state-side during times of extended separation. Establishing independence through a deployment is important, but building a continuing resolve to address emerging challenges is critical. Army Emergency Relief (AER) Program provides financial assistance to meet emergencies; finding a meaningful career or part-time employment through the Employment Readiness Program (ERP) is one of the best ways we empower our populace; the Financial Readiness Program (FRP) provides expert training on budgeting, credit, investment strategies and consumer protection assistance; Relocation Readiness Program ensures a smooth transition for our new arrivals or when conducting a PCS. They also provide such services as English as a second language, passport facilitation and a platform for Immigration information. ACS training and services when coupled with unit leader participation, serves to focus our Soldiers in their pursuit of military excellence by removing distractions in addressing key areas before they become emergencies. ACS possesses services that impacts and improves the quality of life for our Soldiers and their Families, retirees and veterans. Moreover, ACS provides a pipeline to community services

reaching far outside the confines of Post. From our own experiences coupled with the data collected by an expert panel, a "Call-ToArms" goes out to our Military Leadership and Congress urging them to take Family Programs seriously when making budget decisions. These programs directly affect Retention, training focus and mission execution. We highly recommend all involved in our community to learn more about the free ACS services by attending regularly scheduled programs as Newcomer's briefings that provide information on ACS programs, a multitude of areas to include medical, Child/Youth Services, Soldier Family Readiness Groups (SFRG) and tours of Post and the surrounding area. Finally, an effective way to learn more about ACS and our community is through the Army Volunteer Corps Program (AVC).

Volunteers operate in areas directly affecting our Soldiers such as working with the USO, MWR programs, the Red Cross and even as ACS intake specialists. In a volunteer capacity you directly assist ACS as a ForceMultiplier for our Soldiers on the Battlefield.
