Just Try It Hi Fort Bliss Community! Happy New Year Greetings! I always see the New Year as a perfect occasion to start making the changes that I said I would make, whether it be next week, next month or next year. So, here I am on my pursuit to accomplish new things and set up new challenges this year. I recently had an amazing opportunity to try a soapmaking class at the Art & Hobby Shop. Handmade soapmaking is something I have never done, and I was very keen on learning how to do it. Being a beginner at art projects, I did not know what to expect, but I admit I had a wonderful time in this one-hour long endeavor. Molly and Tara are very knowledgeable instructors, and thoroughly explained the process of soapmaking. It was very simple, and I was glad that all supplies were included in the registration fee. During the class we used Melt & Pour Crystal soap base. What I learned is that there are three steps in the process. First you start off by melting down one inch soap cubes – I used 2 lbs. of goat’s milk soap base and split it into two plastic containers. Then, I added Coastal Rain oil fragrance along with Caribbean and Mermaid blue colors, so my soap can smell and look like the ocean. Lastly, I poured the colored mixture onto a silicon soap base (looks like an ice cube tray), swirling it a bit to make nice patterns. To avoid bubbles on top, I sprayed the top surface with a dash of alcohol. Once the mixture hardened, I put the silicon base in the freezer for about 15 minutes. Once the minutes passed,

page 18

blissNOW

JAN | FEB | MAR

they were ready! During this class I learned the basics, but truly, making soap can be so creative, as well as educational. You get to learn about different techniques of soapmaking and what type of ingredients you can use. Doing this really fun craft was simple and enjoyable, something that you can easily turn into a passion. I made four pieces of soap that I intend to gift to my friends. If you would like to learn more and advance your skills, Art & Hobby Shop offers numerous soapmaking classes from beginner to advanced levels. The facility can also do private classes if you are looking for a fun birthday or party activity, but they ask you to inquire about options in advance. Art & Hobby Shop also offers other programs such as painting, wheel pottery and more. So, come alone, bring a friend, or your family and create some art! No experience is necessary, as this is fun art! For more information, class schedule or programs available, visit bliss.armymwr.com or call 915-5685563. You can also stop by the Art & Hobby Shop located at 820 Marshall Road. May you have a successful 2020, and I hope you get an opportunity to do what you love.

Until next time,

Aneta

STAYING

Hi everyone, Milo here! Winter is here and I thought I would just give everyone a few reminders on how to keep me and all the other fur babies safe as temperatures drop. Most of you are aware of how hot weather can be tough on pets, but the cold weather is equally as dangerous. Cold weather poses many health threats as well as boredom and we all know a bored pet at home can chew and consume things that can be harmful. While outdoor pets can acclimate to colder weather, they cannot in extreme cold. Consider using sweaters and even boots as it can be uncomfortable for us to walk in rain and snow, imagine doing it barefoot. Please wipe off our paws after being outside and check for injuries and cracks that can be caused by cold weather and de-icing agents. Calories provide us with body heat, so we tend

to eat more in the cold months. Foods high in nutrients and low in calories are best, so that we don’t put on any excess weight. As much as we love treats, they are often empty calories and should be cut back in the winter. You want to do everything you can to keep your pets safe and healthy during the winter months. Even some things that may seem harmless can cause an issue, which is why it is important to take these tips into consideration. Thank you for making me and all the other fur babies part of your forever home. Stay safe and Happy New Year from all of us here at Fort Bliss MWR.

Recognizing the best BY NATALIE HINOJOS

FAMILY & MWR MARKETING

Underwood Golf Complex has been undergoing many changes, upgrades and have been receiving recognition for their hard work. Recently, Kenneth Meador, manager of the Pro Shop at Underwood Golf Complex, received the Public Merchandiser of the Year award for all public/ military golf courses in New Mexico and El Paso. The Public Merchandiser of the Year award is an award that only public golf courses are eligible to enter. A person must be nominated from a fellow Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) member. All the nominees are required to submit a packet, including pictures of the Pro Shop and their merchandising philosophy. Also considered in the selection are yearly account sales and inventory turnover ratio. The board votes based on the information provided in the packet. The President of the Sun Country PGA nominated Kenneth for this particular award.

“It’s a great honor to win this award,” said Kenneth. “Mainly because it’s our professional colleagues that nominate and vote for us. It is great exposure for us to all the local golfers.” Kenneth has been working at Underwood for more than five years as the Pro Shop manager and has dedicated his time and effort keeping the Pro Shop at its best. “Since taking over the merchandising, my goal has been to be the place to go for golfers. I wanted to make sure that our shop was modern, carrying the biggest brands in golf apparel and equipment,” said Kenneth. “I try to keep a good mix of trendy apparel and some more conservative styles, as we have many different demographics to service. I don’t think any PGA professionals do what we do with the goal of winning awards, but it is a great honor and very humbling to be recognized by our fellow PGA professionals.” If you haven’t been to Underwood Golf Complex you should know that it is now open to the public! Come check out the services that are provided including two golf courses, the Golden Tee restaurant and now the award-winning Pro Shop. For more information, call Underwood Golf Complex at 915-568-1059.

A Perfect Game Bowlers at Desert Strike Lanes score 300

BY NATALIE HINOJOS

FAMILY & MWR MARKETING

C-R-R-A-A-C-K-K!! It’s the end of a bowling frame, someone made a strike and scored 300! Teammates are cheering and excited to see one of their own make a perfect score. Desert Strike Lanes has hosted leagues for different age groups through the years. Recently they’ve had four people score a 300 game and presented them with bowling pin trophies. “Bowling a 300 is a challenge every bowler would love to achieve. The challenge is just getting that perfect score, to know, as a bowler that you can achieve what most Pro bowlers can do,” said Jannette Caswell, assistant manager at Desert Strike Lanes. “We just want to recognize that achievement with a presentation of a trophy each time a bowler bowls that perfect 300 game.” Many of the league members have been bowling since they were children or in recent years have picked up the game. “My mom and dad bowled, so I grew up in a bowling center. I guess you could say we are a bowling family,” said Brock Stevens, a substitute player, but a member of Fish bowling league. “I’ve been bowling since I was 6 years old, so all in all I’ve been bowling for 32 years.” Stevens was born in Washington State and moved to El Paso in 1984. His father was stationed at the Navy Reserve Center and retired here, in El Paso. He began bowling at Desert Strike Lanes as a youth bowler. “Some of the teams I bowl with now have watched me grow up and get better with the game,” said Stevens. Kishaun Geary, El Paso native and team member of “Keeping it G” and “Brew Crew,” has been bowling since the age of 8. Before joining the adult leagues he bowled for the Desert Strike Lanes Youth League, at the age of @blissmwr

14. He’s been a part of Desert Strike Lanes leagues for 12 years. Geary’s grandfather was a retired veteran and would always bring him to the lanes on post. “Bowling has always been a big thing in my family starting with my grandparents,” said Geary. “They would take me to their league play every Monday and I was always fascinated watching all the different colored bowling balls rolling down the lanes. Soon after my mother bought me my first Scooby Doo ball.” As much of an excitement it is to bowl a perfect game, this wasn’t Stevens and Geary’s first time scoring 300. “I can still remember my first one; it happened on Aug. 8, 2008, hard to forget that date,” said Stevens. “I was bowling on a Friday night at Bowlero Lanes, which is now closed. It was opening ceremonies for the summer Olympic Games. I wasn’t really paying attention to my score, because we were watching the show. Once I realized how close I was, I got super nervous and thought I was gonna mess it up, but I was able to have enough luck to get it done.” “It was not my first. The first time I bowled a 300 was November 5, 2018 at Desert Strike Lanes,” said Geary. “After having many 299s and 298s, the feeling of finally accomplishing the 300 was beyond amazing. The built up tension finally paid off!” At Desert Strike Lanes, it is no surprise for the staff to watch bowlers on occasion score 300. Recently, 1st Sgt. Chris Washington, subbing for the Veterans league, scored 300 — along with Bronson Etse in September 2019. “We always expect a few 300 games during the league season, and we can expect more to come throughout the year,” said Caswell. BALANCING THE PILLARS BY SGT. GAVIN TOMENY FAMILY & MWR BOSS

By now, most people may be familiar with the Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers (BOSS) program. You may even know about our pillars: Quality of Life; Community Service; and Recreation and Leisure. What you don’t know are all the great things we’re planning around those pillars for 2020! Community Service is a very important pillar of the BOSS Program; however, it is not beneficial if it overshadows the other two pillars, Quality of Life and Recreation and Leisure. Lately, there has been a lot of emphasis on community service activities within BOSS; which is why in 2020, we are looking to rebalance the pillars. BOSS has built very strong relationships with our Fort Bliss MWR partners. Fort Bliss has an absolutely amazing team working for them in all of their different departments and programs. Unfortunately, many of these opportunities are underutilized by Soldiers. Part of the issue is they simply do not know what is available.

BOSS has started planning many events with Outdoor Recreation, Art and Hobby Shop, Auto Craft Center, and Mickelsen Community Library. We’re also in the process of planning events with Underwood Golf Course, Rod and Gun Club and the fitness centers on post. Our goal is to provide a large range of options for Soldiers to enjoy. With Outdoor Recreation, we will be trying out different types of sports such as kayaking, climbing, rafting and even primitive survival skills. We will also host automotive maintenance classes at the Auto Crafts Center, to give Soldiers the opportunity to learn how to maintain their own vehicles and save money. We have a bunch of different types of art classes going on with Art and Hobby Shop. We’ll be doing everything from pottery and soapmaking to painting and resin art. At Mickelsen Community Library we will be learning more advanced things like 3D Printing and programming a Computer Numerical Control Router (CNC). BOSS wants to show Soldiers what Fort Bliss and the greater El Paso area really has to offer. We are blessed to be stationed here on the best post in the Army with some of the best MWR teams working hard for our Soldiers. If you have any questions about BOSS, call 915-892-5195.

Fitness 4 Life! BY CYS YOUTH SPORTS PLEX

At a young age, children learn the differences between good and bad habits. Our Youth Sports Plex, focuses on teaching a healthy lifestyle by providing a fun fitness atmosphere, Monday through Friday from 3 to 7 p.m. They follow that up with a nutritious snack to replenish the body and it’s all free! Each day the classes are changed to provide a different workout and encourage increased student participation. This is seen in the 4 p.m. class that has grown tremendously in one year, creating an environment where participants will bike or run to the Sports Plex just to attend a fitness class. “I like how some of the classes are challenging, I like the variety,” said Colton McLean, fitness class participant. “I like how they are set up, so by the end of the

@blissmwr

week I’ll have had a whole body workout,” said Gunnar McLean, fitness class participant. The vast majority of our students are like adults, who believe if they come consistently to class, they will be able to reach their goals. “I’d like to be able to deadlift 100 lbs.,” said Avery Creer, fitness class participant. She is only 15 lbs. away from achieving her mark. This past season, Youth Sports Plex recently offered second practices for sports team age groups, 9 to 11 and 12 to 15, to incorporate a fitness class. This was implemented to allow coaches to focus on sports skills, while students learn and practice fitness conditioning skills from fitness specialists. Youth Sports Plex is looking forward to offering this to the winter basketball and volleyball team this season. Hope to see you and your child with us soon!

ONE-STOP SHOP Parent Central is the place to go for child care

BY RACHELLE PHILLIPS

FAMILY & MWR MARKETING

If you are a parent and new to Fort Bliss, Parent Central is the first stop to make when registering your child for any child care services provided on the installation. The first thing to know is what programs are available for your child. Whether it’s sports activities, child care services, or after school programs, information and registration is available at Parent Central. There are Child Development Centers (CDC), Family Child Care (FCC), School Age Centers (SAC), Youth Activities Centers, Youth Sports and the SKIESUnlimited Program available to our military families. Any one of these programs may be the perfect fit for your child’s needs. If you’re wondering if you should use any Fort Bliss child care programs, know that all of the child care services are held to the Department of the Army requirements. Every child care provider is trained in first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), and the Multidisciplinary Inclusion Action Team plan (MIAT). The MIAT plan includes allergy and food intolerance, seizures, asthma, ADD/ADHD and many other special needs your child may have. Every employee within each facility has completed and passed mandatory background checks and are Mandatory Reporters.

Another reason to use child care on post is our centers and providers know what you need. They understand that the life of a Soldier and their military child differs greatly from a civilian family. As a Soldier, you do not have to worry about field problems or staff duty. The FCC providers offer odd hours, extended and short-term care for your Family Care Plan. Child and Youth Services (CYS) offer many different services, such as full time and hourly care, with before and after school programs to fit every family’s needs.
