Just Try it Happy New Year Greetings! May the New Year bring you good health, much happiness, and plenty of prosperity. As we leave the previous year behind, I am very enthusiastic to set new goals, and accomplish new projects in 2021! Due to the pandemic, and closures and limiting of Fort Bliss MWR programs, I had to think outside the box for an activity I could encourage you to try. This is the perfect time of the year to take advantage of the weather and hit some of the trails and explore El Paso’s beautiful nature. If you have yet to try hiking, it’s time to get outdoors! There are a magnitude of hiking trails in the area. One of the beautiful things about El Paso is that we are surrounded by mountains. Franklin Mountains State Parks offers a wealth of outdoor and nature adventures. Undoubtedly, this place has become one of my favorite spots to hike and explore the nature of the Chihuahuan Desert.

hit the trail I recently joined a hiking group, and learned about the Old Tin Mines. Here’s a little bit of history I learned: the El Paso Tin Mining and Smelting Company operated on the northeast slope of North Franklin in 1909 for about 6 years. While the mine had the distinction of being the only tin mine ever located in the U.S., the mines failed to produce enough tin, and the venture became an economic failure. For that reason, the mines were closed in 1915. Today, the mines lie within the Franklin Mountains State Park, and are presented to visitors as part of regional history. Knowing this interesting part of history, I decided to check the ruins of the Old Tin Mines. I started at Chuck Heinrich Memorial Park and followed the Mundy’s Gap/Tin Mine Trail. There is a short, but steep uphill climb at the very end to reach the mine entrance, so make sure to wear shoes with good traction. One of the unique parts of this trail is that you can actually enter the Tin Mines! I would suggest bringing a flashlight or headlamp
@blissmwr
to capture the full experience. You can discover the upper and lower level of shafts, and that is what makes this trail so interesting. It can get a bit spooky inside from how dark it is, but you can still admire the beautiful rock formations. This is the only Tin Mine in the U.S. that is open to visitors. This experience was fun and very cool! The path was quite easy, but it can get rocky in some areas. It is about a 6 mile-long trail out and back, and there are fantastic views of the mountains and desert plants along the trail. The hike took me about 3.5 hours, so be prepared to spend quite a bit of time outdoors. It is a great adventure if you would like to bring your family! If you plan to hike this trail in warm summer months, I recommend hiking early in the morning and bring plenty of water. There’s no shade, and the sun can be harsh. You can bring snacks to make it a picnic adventure, too! Before you set out on your hiking adventure, do not forget to check the Texas State Park website for updates, pass reservations and applicable fees. Until next time,
Aneta

Hello friends! Milo here, your favorite Fort Bliss MWR mascot! It’s a new year and things have changed for all of us. Did you know February is Responsible Pet Owners’ Month? At the beginning of the year some families might find themselves searching for a dog or cat to add to their family. Some may have even added a new pet during the holidays. It’s best to understand that with any pet there are important responsibilities you must take on. Here are some tips on how to be a responsible pet parent. Who better to give advice than me! Regular Exercise: Yes, we need to exercise just like you! We, dogs, are great running and walking buddies! Wanna practice your throw? We’ll go fetch the ball for you! It’s a win-win for both of us! I can’t say I’m much of an expert, but I hear cats like to chase red dots or swat at cat toys for their exercise. Check-Ups: Like humans, going to the doctor is essential. Making annual check-up dates for our wellness helps us stay in good health. Don’t forget to feed us: As a new or seasoned pet, it’s best to watch what you’re feeding us. We may have allergies to certain foods, if you’re unsure of what food is best, consult your veterinarian. Keep an eye on our food bowls and how much we are eating, some of us like to gobble up the food and are set until dinner. Some of us may over indulge, which isn’t
@blissmwr
always best for us. Exercise is always best to help digest our food intake. Getting Fixed: Spaying or neutering your pet can help reduce the number of animals that end up in shelters or worse. It is also very beneficial for our health. Let’s get trained: Nothing bonds you more with your pet than training us. I learned how to sit, shake hands, roll over and how to put on my harness or at least place my front paws in the openings! These are just a few tips to start with if you’re thinking of becoming a pet parent. Make sure to do your research on what it takes to care of a pet. The most important thing about being responsible pet parents is showing us how much you love us! It’s the best thing you can give us!

A Very Berry New Year BY EDWARD ARRIOLA FAMILY & MWR SPECIAL EVENTS
“New Year, new me,” is a motto we strive to uphold at the beginning of every year. We promise to try new things and grow as an individual. If you are looking to try something new, Tasha and I have got you covered. In this Food for Thought, my horizons were broadened and my artistic talents were put to the test. Have you ever heard of fondue? It’s a dish in which pieces of food, or fruit are dipped into a hot melting pot. For example, chocolate dipped strawberries are a classic that can be used to brighten any holiday or family get together. Well, we took that classic fondue favorite and threw in a twist! We started out with regular strawberries and blueberries (my personal favorite), added a couple of ingredients and created concoctions that you’ll definitely want to try! The four deliciously different dips we used were honey with lime juice, sour cream with cinnamon toast crunch powder, peanut butter with coconut, and white chocolate with blue fun dip. Sour, yet Sweet The honey and lime mixture was a winning combination! The sweet flavor of the honey paired nicely with the tartness of the lime juice creating a sweet tart combo that would make anyone’s mouth water! For the brave souls that like a kick of spice, Tasha recommends adding chili powder or Tajin, just sprinkle it on after you dip the berries. Cream N’ Crunch Sour cream with cinnamon toast crunch powder was an interesting idea page 10

on paper, but not one of the greatest combinations. I probably should’ve seen that coming considering you wouldn’t mix breakfast cereal into your nachos, but at least I can say I tried it. Yummy Combo Peanut butter and coconut was a surprisingly good combination. As far as dipping though it wasn’t the easiest to do and the presentation wasn’t too appetizing. Then again, I don’t claim to be a food artist. The coconut complimented the peanut butter and created an explosion of flavor for your taste buds to enjoy. Try toasting the coconut flakes for an added burst of flavor and a nice crunch. Patriotic Dip From the start I had mixed emotions about White Chocolate and Fun Dip. I love white chocolate, but Fun Dip has always been a bit too sweet. Coming from someone that loves sweets that says a lot. We were going for a red, white, and blue theme with these ingredients, perfect for any Fourth of July celebration. It was exactly as we thought, the Fun Dip was too overpowering, and masked the taste of the strawberry and the white chocolate. We probably should have sprinkled it on, instead of dipping it. The original candy we wanted was blue Pop Rocks, but unfortunately, we couldn’t find those anywhere. This may be one I’ll have to try on my own. Good or bad, each dip was interesting and a new experience. I recommend trying this with friends or family. They are great for any occasion and will be an activity that all will love, no matter what age or skill level. My skills are slowly growing and I look forward to the next challenge that awaits me. With that I just want to say don’t be afraid to try new things, step out of your comfort zone and see where life takes you. You will be surprised at what you are truly capable of. New Year, New Me! @blissmwr

not even a pandemic BY TEPHANIE HOPPER
FAMILY & MWR ARMY VOLUNTEER CORPS
In early March 2020, our world was placed on pause due to COVID-19. It was like everything stopped! It did initially, but then came the volunteer force for good. It reminded me of a quote “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping,” stated by Fred Rogers, from children’s television show Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. Volunteers are the ultimate helpers. They began to help by sewing numerous face coverings. Young, old, women and men brought out their sewing machines and started sewing face coverings to help protect against the spread of COVID-19. Accompanying the COVID-19 pandemic was a tremendous job loss nationwide, including in El Paso and on Fort Bliss. With job loss, there comes a need for food. I remember seeing the long lines of vehicles at Kelly Memorial Food Pantry and the Junior Enlisted Family Center. It was heartbreaking to see so many in need of food, but the helpers were there. Volunteers assisted by organizing and distributing food to those in need. They also helped people fulfill requests, for the elderly or those who have
@blissmwr
compromised immune systems, by picking up groceries or miscellaneous items. Other volunteers assisted by delivering those requested items through texts from the El Paso Help Action Organization. With the pandemic, the elderly – who reside in nursing homes – experienced loneliness and isolation. To prevent them from getting sick, they were not able to see their loved ones. Thanks to volunteers, they were on the move by sending letters, cards and setting them up with FaceTime chats to their loved ones. Some volunteers even organized virtual game nights and talent shows for the elderly to keep their minds off isolation. We recognize that volunteering has been limited due to the pandemic, but there are still opportunities to be fulfilled. By helping out at the food pantry, virtually mentoring someone, sending letters or merely calling someone, volunteers can still support the community. We are in need of helpers like you! If you’re interested in volunteering or being a helper, contact the Fort Bliss Army Volunteer Corps Program at 915-569-5500.

TAXES DONE RIGHT in the era of COVID-19 BY FORT BLISS TAX SERVICES
Benjamin Franklin once said, “In this world, nothing is certain except death and taxes.” The Fort Bliss Tax Center will be there to help service members, dependents and retirees in facing the second certainty while implementing health and safety measures to avoid the first. An array of changes are being implemented in the Tax Center for the upcoming tax season, with the goal of maintaining a COVID-19 safe environment. Plexiglas panels on desks to separate clients and tax preparers, masks being required at all times, and sanitation stations at the entrance are all some of the more familiar ways the Tax Center is looking to keep its clients safe. Another way the Fort Bliss Tax Center is adapting to face the challenge of COVID-19 can be seen in the new way in which appointments are handled. In years past, eligible clients could walk in to the tax center and make appointments in person or even have their taxes prepared right then and there, if there was an available tax preparer. However, with the spread of COVID-19, walk-in appointments and in-person scheduling will no longer be allowed. Instead, appointments can be made either by telephone at 915-568-1040, or by Facebook at the Fort Bliss Tax Center page by sending a private message. In lieu of making an appointment, clients with simple tax returns also have the option of dropping off their tax returns for pick-up at a later time. A person may be eligible for simple tax returns if their taxable income is less than $100, they don’t claim dependents, and are single or married filing jointly.
@blissmwr
Another change to the old system can be seen in how clients will be in-processed. Due to social distancing requirements, the waiting room will be closed. Instead, clients will park their cars in designated spaces and wait for a tax preparer, who will come out to their vehicle to ensure that they have all the necessary documents before escorting them inside the building. Before entering the building, clients will have their temperature taken, and be required to answer a series of questions regarding any possible COVID-19 symptoms or exposure. Through these health and safety measures, the Fort Bliss Tax Center is fully prepared to serve the community by providing top quality tax preparation in a safe and secure environment. The Tax Center is located at 2910 Cassidy Road and will open Jan. 19. Appointments can be made starting on Jan. 18.
In this world, nothing is certain except death and taxes.

CHANGING WITH T Spotlight on Milam Youth Center BY HOLLY LEBEJKO FAMILY & MWR MARKETING
Milam Youth Center (MYC) has had a crazy 2020. The staff started out the year open to middle and high school students supporting them with before and after school programming, a place to hang out, or get help with homework. Then March 2020 hit. Mid-March, the MYC was shut down at the end of spring break due to COVID-19. The center remained closed until late July when it was reopened as a Milam Annex to support the increased number of children from mission essential families in 5th to 7th grades attending the Milam School Age Center (SAC). The staff at the MYC finished out summer activities children had started with the SAC and changed roles again once school resumed. School starting prompted the MYC staff to learn and implement new sanitation procedures, make different modifications to the building (creating an isolation room), and set up the building for virtual learning. The children were broken up into virtual learning centers by grade. The MYC also began operating on a new schedule to support virtual learning. Children enjoy some free time in the morning, followed by logging into school with their devices and headphones, taking care to properly social distance being spaced 6ft apart. Breaks for lunch and physical education (P.E.) are taken throughout the day followed by some more free time at the end of the day. During intersession, students enjoy different activities and programming such as crafts, enjoying the skate park, laser tag, creating t-shirt designs, and playing games such as Kahoot. Throughout this transition, the School Age Center staff has provided support and guidance to MYC. They have been a great resource in helping MYC with learning about working with fifth graders and implementing virtual learning. Jennie Aguirre, director of Milam Youth Center, talked about how proud she is of her staff as they faced unprecedented challenges this year. The MYC staff has adapted to working with younger students,

THE TIMES and have really stepped up with being flexible in all of the changes and amazing with their willingness to learn. Mr. Jose has taken the lead in working with the centers youngest children, the 5th graders, and has learned how to provide more guidance and redirection techniques for this age group. Ms. Aguirre stated the demographic they serve and the services they provide may have changed in 2020, but the end result is the same – to ensure the youth have a safe, healthy and happy environment. It is always rewarding for the staff to see the smiles on the children’s faces. The MYC will continue to operate as a SAC annex for the near future. Ms. Aguirre expressed that although she and her staff have enjoyed working with a different group of children; they miss their teens and look forward to welcoming them back soon and continuing the Youth Center programming. The Milam Youth Center is located at 10960 Haan Road. For more information, follow on Facebook at Milam YAC or call 915-744-2449.

@blissmwr
If you are new to this lifestyle, here are a few tips from Trent Bahr, manager of the Fort Bliss RV Park, to keep in mind. Don’t be afraid to ask: Most RV owners are extremely friendly and are willing to help. Be sure to practice driving/towing: Before taking a trip out in your RV, make sure you’re comfortable behind the wheel. It’s a different experience than driving a car. Get comfortable with wide turns and giving additional space for breaking. Checklist Preparation: Definitely use a checklist to prepare your RV for a road trip (listed below). Check the weather: Know the weather conditions where you are traveling. Be prepared for the west Texas wind here in Sun City El Paso! BY NATALIE HINOJOS FAMILY & MWR MARKETING
It’s March 2020, news is breaking out about possible shut downs due to a contagious virus. There’s panic in the streets, people are stocking up on necessities and hoping this will calm down in a week or two. Two months pass the streets are calm, but essential workers are continuously working hard to help those in need. Everyone has suffered from different losses in 2020, but during the stress of everything, Fort Bliss MWR continued to work through, coming up with ways to continue serving Soldiers and their Families safely. MWR Marketing & Special Events The first thing Fort Bliss MWR Marketing did to keep military Families entertained by competing in friendly contests and rewarding them with gift cards. Then, the Sponsorship and Advertising team worked around the clock to help those in need through great partnerships with local organizations. Boingo and a local non-profit veterans organization — in honor of Mr. Bill Wiggins — contributed by providing goods for Soldiers who were quarantined in March. Other sponsors provided gift cards, craft kits, school supplies, candies, teddy bear mobile kits and gifts for the 15 Days of Christmas Giveaway. Let’s not forget the spectacular fireworks display provided by USAA and Fort Bliss MWR on the 4th of July. Marketing and Special Events decorated their buildings with frightful characters for Halloween, creating a drive-thru Spooktacular for all ages to enjoy. Fort Bliss MWR came together as one to hand out candies for Halloween to Soldiers and their Families. Marketing and Special Events worked with many page 28

other MWR facilities to bring a winter wonderland of light displays during the month of December. They successfully closed out the year with holiday cheer! MWR Community Recreation Department If you’ve been to the physical fitness centers, libraries, auto craft, art & hobby facilities then you’ve experienced hard working employees who continue to serve our Soldiers and Families. From virtual runs, take home art kits to curbside pick-ups and do-it-yourself auto repair, Fort Bliss MWR helped patrons continue through very trying times. Although things were cancelled due to COVID-19, they adapted to figure out other ways to give patrons something to do and stay active. Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers (BOSS) continues to work with MWR and other local organizations as much as they can. The BOSS team was able to provide sporting entertainment, volunteer opportunities and free holiday meals for single Soldiers. MWR Business Operations Department The Rod & Gun Club and Underwood Golf Complex were one of the first facilities to open up safely to provide outdoor activities for Soldiers and Families. They created safety procedures that followed Center of Disease Control (CDC) guidelines. As these facilities proved to be working well, Centennial Banquet and Conference Center, Desert Strike Lanes, Monti Warrior Zone and the Funky Rooster opened up their doors providing take out, areas to dine in safely and more entertainment. Safety is always key with Fort Bliss MWR, as the new year starts, be sure to look out for online contests, virtual classes, drive-thru pick-ups, rock hunting and hopefully some of the traditional big events, too! Here’s hoping 2021 brings us all back together! @blissmwr

JOB HU DURING A GLOBAL PANDEMIC BY DARRELL M. HENDERSON
FAMILY & MWR ARMY COMMUNITY SERVICE (ACS)
If you happen to be one of the 3.8 million people that has lost their job due to the global pandemic, you are probably asking yourself, “What now?” We have been spending a lot of time at home, learning to cook, watching TV, homeschooling the kids and picking up new hobbies, but the time has come for us to get back out there. Why not use the time we are spending at home to dust off that résumé, brush up on some skills, and look for that next career. Job hunting during a pandemic might seem impossible. With these 8 tips you can change the impossible to possible. Stay positive. Finding a job pre-COVID-19 was tough enough. We understand there is added stress to finding a job during COVID-19 times, but you can do this. Companies are still out there and they are still hiring. They want to hire you, keep searching and applying, your hard work and effort will pay off. Use your extra time wisely. This time is not just good for catching up on your Netflix queue, but it is also good for closing any skill gaps you may have. Now may be time to finish up a degree, obtain a certificate or license, and update or acquire those skills that are pertinent to your career field. Brush up on what’s new in the job field, research articles to learn about trends in your field or subscribe to experts on their YouTube channel. Update your résumés. Every job you apply to needs to have a unique, individualized, and tailored résumé. For example, if you were applying to Home Depot and Lowe’s for the same position, those résumés will only have slight differences, depending on the keywords and different language of the job description. However, applying to Home Depot and Amazon, you would require two very different résumés. Different skills would have to be emphasized and other skills deemphasized when applying to these different businesses. Remember to page 32
blissNOW
JAN | FEB | MAR
list only the skills that are applicable to the positions you are considering. Save different versions of your résumés on your computer, such as: Home Depot résumé and Lowe’s résumé. That way, when it is interview time, you can reference the correct one. Be flexible in the types of jobs you consider. Be open to working weekends – even Sundays, working odd hours, traveling, and maybe even changing locations altogether. Change can be for the better, all it takes is moving toward a hopeful future. There are a variety of ways to search for jobs. There are hundreds of websites that can aid you in searching for multiple positions. Indeed, Zip Recruiter, USA Jobs, Workintexas.com are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to looking for jobs. If you find a position on a third-party website, be sure to visit the company website itself and find the job there. Sometimes third-party websites can be delayed on updates if the position is closed or updated. It’s always best to submit your résumé directly to the organization’s website you want to apply. It will give you better chances for the employer to view your résumé. Attend virtual hiring events. Somewhere across this country on the internet, there is a hiring event going on right now. During these trying times, most in-person hiring events and in-person recruiting have been put to a halt. A virtual hiring event is a good way to get your résumé out there. Also, depending on the quality of the virtual platform companies may be using, you might also be able to put your face out there (virtually) as well. At most of these virtual events you can talk one-on-one with a recruiter, either by phone or video chat and you can ask them all the questions you like. Maybe they can even critique your résumé before you apply. Network with people you know and on LinkedIn. You have heard the old saying, “It is not what you www.bliss.armymwr.com
NTING know; it is who you know.” Word of mouth is a fantastic way to find a job. The more sets of eyes you have looking on your behalf, the better. Let everyone know that you are looking for new opportunities. Here is a pro-tip, “Don’t ask people for help, ask for their advice.” More people are willing to give advice than help. Ask for their advice on how to get into a field that they are in, or get their advice on how to apply to the company where they work. Get the support you need. Sometimes we need a coach to help us to get back in the game. The Employment Readiness Program (ERP) at Army Community Service (ACS) has coaches ready to assist you. Our Employment Specialists are ready to help you formulate a plan, assist you with your résumé and brush up on your interview skills. They can also be that second set of eyes to help you find your next career and help motivate you. For more information, call 915-569-5838 or follow us on Facebook @ACSERPftbliss. Searching for a job at any time can be a daunting and sometimes frustrating effort. Searching for a job during a pandemic can ramp up those feelings by a factor of 10. The competition is fierce for jobs since a lot of the workforce is sitting at home asking the same questions that we are asking, “What now?” Arm yourself with the knowledge that you can get through this. The jobs are out there and they are looking for someone with your skills. Utilize these tips and they just might find you first. @blissmwr
