It’s a new year with new opportunities to grow. Although I’ve been kind of slipping on the cooking side, this always tends to keep me on my toes. For this edition of Bliss NOW, I decided to try and make one of my favorite dishes- biscuits and gravy! Now I don’t want to toot my own horn but it was delicious! I found a simple recipe online to try out and made a bang in the kitchen, both with the can of ready-made biscuits and the food itself. The ingredients needed for the dish are quite simple. One can of ready-made biscuits, one pound breakfast sausage, six eggs, 1/2 cup of milk, shredded cheese — I recommend a lot but not everyone loves cheese like I do — and gravy! I attempted to make my own gravy and I must say that mistakes were made, but we will get to that later. I started with a 9 x 13-inch pan. Make sure to grease your pan so that the biscuits don’t stick. That was my first mistake; I forgot to grease it. Be sure to preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Open the can of biscuits, fair warning the ‘POP’ can make you jump, like me! Cut the biscuits into quarters and place in the pan. Next step is to spread the shredded cheese on top of the biscuits, for me it’s the more cheese the merrier! I used about a pound of the four cheese Mexican blend, but I’m terrible with measuring. In a separate bowl, mix a 1/2 cup of milk and all six eggs together. Add www.bliss.armymwr.com
your favorite seasoning, I went with garlic powder, lemon pepper and a touch of salt. Find what works for you, we all start as beginners and then become amazing cooks. Pour the seasoning mixture over your cheese and biscuits, keep in mind this recipe is a layering process. The sausage gravy comes next. This is where my second mistake occurred, I bought the wrong sausage! In my defense – I’m not a breakfast person, though. I accidentally bought bratwurst, it’s okay to laugh, I did too. I will admit though that this gave it a unique taste that I loved. Remember, always have fun with your cooking! If you want to attempt and make your own gravy, it’s simple. First, cut up the sausage and then brown it, then add 1/4 cup of flour, and slowly stir in milk until you find the right consistency that
@blissmwr
fits you. I, for one, like the gravy thick. I added mushrooms to the mix, because quite frankly I enjoy mushrooms in gravy. When you are satisfied with the gravy and its consistency, layer it on top of the biscuits, place the pan in the oven and cook for 30 minutes. When it’s ready, dig in to the delicious dish! One thing I’m starting to enjoy about this journey is that I can experiment and I’ve found, even with the imperfections, somehow it can still work out. In every mistake we find what’s good and what’s bad, but no matter what we keep going. It’s a new year, so let’s all try something new! And if you make a mistake, it’s okay because no one is perfect. Stop searching for perfection and embrace the imperfections of life, but that’s just Food for Thought!

When thinking about resilience we often think about being tough, being able to bounce back, and being able to face adversity and come out on top. However, we do not often consider how to become resilient without first facing a hardship that we need to fight. While resilience is learned, it can-and should- also be taught, practiced and cultivated. So let’s start simple. Some key aspects of resilience are much more accessible and easier to grasp than you may have thought. Building healthy relationships: Find like-minded, supportive, and empathetic relationships. By creating these connections, you are building a network of individuals and groups that are there when you need them. Creating a sense of belonging and ownership within a group is paramount to building resilience as it brings value to days and reminds you in the hard times that you’re not alone when things get tough. Self-care: When you take care of yourself, manage your stress, get quality sleep, and fuel your body properly then your body is ready and prepared to respond effectively. By actively participating in self-care activities that are important and meaningful to you, you are able to find relaxing, positive outlets, improve stress levels, boost your physical health, and create a positive relationship with yourself. Some quick and easy things to try are as simple as going for a walk, taking a bubble bath, reading a book, testing out a new recipe, or unplugging from electronics or social media for a day. Find your WHY: Having goals, meaning, and desires to work toward guides our day-to-day lives. However, knowing clearly why we are doing what we’re doing is what keeps us motivated. For some, it is as simple as providing themselves and their family with the best there is to offer. For others, it is the journey of learning and experiencing new things. Knowing why you do the things you do and reminding yourself often is an important step in improving resilience as it keeps the motivation high and encourages actions to follow. Consider posting a picture or visual of what drives you somewhere that you will see it daily to create that reminder of WHY. Create a healthy mind: Transitioning our thoughts to support positive outcomes can be difficult, and it will most definitely take time. However, simple intentional actions day after day can become habit. Consider journaling for example. By putting thoughts on paper allows us to step back and reflect over time. Through reflection we can pick out the positive things, for example, did I learn something from this? What will I do differently next time? How can I be proactive in the future? Resilience is not something we develop overnight, however, it also does not need to be something we develop by first facing difficulties. Consider tackling these steps one by one and seeing how you feel as you progress. Even in setbacks, there is something to be learned. www.bliss.armymwr.com

Hello friends, Milo here, your favorite Family and MWR mascot! Happy New Year! This past year has been a whirlwind of crazy possibilities, from events starting up to getting together safely with family on the holidays. I also had some opportunities to take a couple of outings in November. I started out with a trip to Logan Elementary! My family and I had the chance to read to students in the kindergarten through 2nd grades at Logan Elementary just before Thanksgiving. It was a blast seeing all the children back in school. We read about bears, insects, lions, mice and more! We even ran into a few high school students, from Chapin High School, who were also reading to the kids. That was so nice of them! Starting in the new year, I will be going on some other little outings. Be sure to keep an eye out for me and come by to say “Hi” or give me a high-5!
Paws and Kisses,

FAMILY & MWR TRAINING
For the past year it has been a struggle for many people to find job opportunities locally. Luckily, Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation (FMWR) has a variety of positions ready to fill. For many people, openings can be difficult to find and they do not know exactly where to look. It’s actually simple as can be, all open positions within MWR are posted online at USA Jobs. Here are a few tips to consider when looking for positions with MWR. First, you want to make sure that you filter the keyword to NAF, Non-Appropriated Funds, and your desired location; for example, living here in El Paso you would search Fort Bliss, Texas. All positions available at Fort Bliss will appear allowing you to look at the different opportunities and job descriptions you might be interested in. Make sure to follow the Fort Bliss MWR Facebook page to see about any upcoming hiring fairs that NAF Human Resources (HR) may be hosting. During the hiring fairs, they’ll be able to assist you with the applying process. There are two options to apply with MWR, you can create an account online with USA Jobs or you can apply in person by setting up an appointment with the NAF HR office. If you are applying online, after you create your account, you are able to use it to apply for other positions within USA Jobs. Be sure to use an accessible, current email address. By doing so, you will be able to receive updates on positions that you’ve applied for and positions that open up, and/ or fill out any additional documents required for a position that you have accepted. When you apply for a position, you will need to have a résumé and upload any documents that are required. USA Jobs will allow you to create a résumé or upload your own. You can have up to three résumés on @blissmwr
file. To see what additional documents are needed, check the “Required Documents” section, which can be found on the Job Announcement. If you are having difficulty accessing or creating a USA Jobs profile, you can set up an appointment with the NAF HR office and apply in-person. You will still be required to submit the application within the stated timeframe, upload a résumé and provide any required documents that the job announcement requires. Remember, the NAF HR office can assist with NAF positions only. For more information regarding NAF job announcements at Fort Bliss, call the NAF HR office at 915-568-6287.

SCHOLARSHIP HONORS FALLEN SOLDIER BY EL PASO COMMUNITY FOUNDATION SPECIAL TO BLISS NOW
El Paso Sergeant Velton “Lock” Locklear III was leading a patrol during his second tour of duty in Iraq on September 23, 2006 when an improvised explosive device detonated near his HMMWV. Sadly, the 29-year-old son, brother, husband, and father of two boys did not survive the attack. The El Paso Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) Outreach Foundation, a 501(c)3 nonprofit founded in 2016 by the El Paso Chapter of the MOAA, wanted to honor Sergeant Locklear and while looking for a partner to extend its charitable work in the greater El Paso area. It turned to the El Paso Community Foundation, where it has established a scholarship in Sergeant Locklear’s honor. Sergeant Locklear was an academic and football standout in Eastwood High School’s Class of 1995. Friends called Velton “a gentle giant.” His father, Sergeant Major Velton Locklear, Jr., himself a combat veteran, said of his son: “Velton, he is a living legacy. He served his country courageously and we are extremely proud of him. He paid the ultimate price for his family and his country, and we will always love him for that.” The new scholarship can be used for tuition and related expenses toward the academic year for MOAA members, Active-Duty military, retired military, their Families, and Junior and Senior ROTC cadets. round of scholarships will be available Jan. 1 through Feb. 1, 2022, at epcf.org/receive. U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) John Robbins, vice president of the El Paso MOAA Outreach Foundation, said it is important to the security of our nation to help local young men and women interested in pursuing their educations and military careers. He is hoping that more ActiveDuty and recently retired military officers will join the local El Paso MOAA Chapter to help his foundation increase its reach. “We’re trying to get more interest from the next generation of the military to help our Foundation provide needed support to the local military community in need and to establish other memorial scholarships honoring our fallen Heroes,” Robbins said. The El Paso MOAA Outreach Foundation’s great gift to El Paso is its desire to help young people advance their educations and military careers and to strengthen the close relationship El Paso has enjoyed with the military for more than a century. For more information about the new scholarship, call the El Paso Community Foundation at 915-533-4020. For more information about the El Paso MOAA Outreach Foundation, go to elpasomoaa. org/outreach.

BY FAMILY & MWR SKIESUNLIMITED
SKIESUnlimited is the program to be a part of at Fort Bliss. The sky is not the only place where you can push the limit. SKIES classes range from art to swimming, and babysitting to guitar. The program offers an array of unique classes to choose from. Did you know that SKIES also serves the military community by offering adult classes? Registration is now open to adults for Ballroom Dance, Fencing, Folklorico, and Highland dance. The Schools of Knowledge, Inspiration, Exploration and Skills (SKIES) is a program that creates unlimited possibilities for Army Youth and Adults. The newest program is Highland dance with instructor, Kelly Guess. “The Highland dance is a traditional Scottish dance from the Highland of Scotland. This dance determined the outcome of wars and was also used as a celebration dance. Highland dancing consists of constant hopping. Just one fling is equivalent to a one mile run. For practice I recommend wearing a t-shirt, shorts, high-knee socks and either ballet shoes or ghillies,” said Kelly. Youth Highland dance is open for ages 7-14 and costs $40 per month. This class is held Mondays from 5 to 5:55 p.m., on main post, at SKIES building 131A Doniphan Road. Drum lessons are back! The SKIES drumming program began February 2011. Please welcome the newest drumming instructor, SFC Michael Bacon, an Active-Duty reservist, who is excited to instruct SKIES youth with this wonderful percussion instrument. The drum, being both a physical and practical instrument, served as part of various rituals throughout history. Banging a drum may seem very easy, however, it can be complex while learning how to properly play. There is no better place to hold new classes than the newly renovated SKIES building 131A. The dance room has received a new floor, and the gymnastics equipment has been moved into the fun-filled gym. All rooms have been repainted and colored to their full potential. Do you have a skill or talent you would like to share with the Fort Bliss Community? SKIES is in need of instructors. In order to apply to be an instructor you must have experience, some type of certification and be able to pass a background check. For more information, call 915-568-5544.

PUSHING THE LIMIT BY NATALIE HINOJOS
FAMILY & MWR MARKETING
Inhale … exhale, you struggle on your last lap around the track. Your muscles are loose; lungs are burning from pushing yourself to the limit. You did it! Looks like you are ready to take on this year’s Fort Bliss 5K & Half Marathon! This is a great event for seasoned and new runners to compete for your best time. It started in January 2011 with a mere 156 registered runners and has grown to more than 490 since the last run in 2020. COVID-19 has put a pause on many things for everyone over the past two years but the Fort Bliss Sports, Fitness and Aquatics (SFA) team is moving forward and is bringing a new route! Are you ready? This year’s route will be held outside Monti Warrior Zone, Jan. 29 starting at 7:30 a.m. There will be waves of 50 people at time to stay within the current regulations. Masks are required until participants begin to run and it is encouraged for participants to practice social distancing throughout the event. Registration is happening now until Jan. 21 at Soto Physical Fitness Center. Packet pickup will be Jan. 27 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Soto PFC. Pre-registration cost is $20 for Active-Duty and Retirees; $35 for Family members and $45 for all others. If you plan to run the 5K only, registration is $20 for all participants. Late registration is Jan. 29 from 6 to 7 a.m. at Monti Warrior Zone, with $5 late fee incurred. Shirt and/or medal may not be available for late registrations. If you have students, who are interested in participating in the 5K or Half Marathon, ages 16-17 must have a waiver signed by their parent or guardian. Children ages 15 and younger can participate with a participating parent and signed waiver. This is a competitive run and there are restrictions such as no pets, scooters, skateboards and bicycles. If you’ve already been getting ready for the half marathon, here are a few tips for the week prior provided by Brittany Trumbull, Fort Bliss Group Fit Instructor and Road Runners Club of America (RRCA) Certified Level 1 Running Coach. @blissmwr
CARBS: Everyone knows the stereotypical bowl of spaghetti the night before a long race that runners indulge in, but the increase in carbohydrates should really gradually increase the entire week prior to the race. No need to skimp on other macronutrients either. Try sticking to the food your body is used to fueling on then just add in some more carbohydrates each day leading up to race day (this can be in form of a snack or by adding to a meal). This method will give your body the glycogen stores you need for this endurance event. PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE: There is no reason to change anything on race day! If you have been running in the same shoes during practice, use the same ones on race day. Keep the right hydration you’ve practiced on long runs the same for the race. Make sure your headphones and playlist are charged and prepared. Use the fueling methods — gels, bars, snacks, etc. — that work for you on race day just like in your training. Switching things up the day of the race is a recipe or gut or hydration disaster, stick to the tried and true. SLEEP: Sleep is always important, but especially the week before your race. If possible, try to get at least 8 hours of sleep each night during race week and allow yourself to take short naps, if you are ever so lucky! Utilize these pockets of rest time the week before to start with a fresh body/mind on race day. POST RACE MUSCLE RECOVERY: If possible in any form, find a place to soak your legs in cold water immediately after the race. It can just be a cold bathtub or winter pool but ice in a bath is best. Just 5 minutes or as long as you can tolerate will aid in immediate recovery. Later that evening try an Epsom salt hot soak to relax. Try not to sit all day after pushing your body to its limit — continue walking throughout the day to keep the muscles moving and recovering before sitting down for the night. HAVE FUN! Unless you are getting paid to do this, endurance races are designed to have fun on the run with a little bit of competition thrown in there. Savor every step along the way. MAKING TIME FOR
FITNESS It’s a new year, meaning a new you, a new take on things, a new goal. Every New Year’s Eve we celebrate, “out with the old and in with the new!” Almost everyone starts to plan or pick their resolutions and the majority of them, usually come down to the same thing … health and fitness. “What am I going to do differently this year?” “How can I keep myself motivated?” It can be very hard to stay with a resolution or even stick to your exercise goals. How much money it takes to stick with a resolution can also be a negative effect. You decide to work on getting fit, well where do you go to do it? Normally, you would join a gym or you might choose to buy the equipment you need to exercise. It can be a financial burden especially when you start to slide back into your comfort zone. The membership ends up going to waste, especially if you signed up for a year, and the equipment goes into storage. Well, if you are an employee at Fort Bliss there’s a fitness program that can help you achieve your goals. The Civilian Employee Fitness Program (CEFP) has the right tools and team to help you on your journey. This is a 6-month program held mainly at Ironworks West, Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Classes are during the lunch hour, from 12 to 1 p.m. — but before you say no, this does not affect your lunchtime at work. Your lunch hour now counts as work time, provided you get permission from your supervisor. So basically you are getting paid to work out! Everyone who starts this program is required to get a physical done by their doctor. This helps the Physical Fitness Specialists to understand if there are any health issues they need to know about. You will also have to get approval from your supervisor. It

helps if you tell them it’s not just for employees, but for them as well — wink, wink. If they participate with you they’ll see the benefits of the program. On day one all participants go through the initial assessment then start a full day with four, 30-minute, exercise sessions on what to expect throughout the 6-month period. The team provides snacks and lunch for that day. There will be lecture sessions on nutrition and how to design strength and conditioning programs. This program has many benefits to look forward to and you’ll meet new people throughout Fort Bliss. You will learn techniques, such as how to properly squat with weights and slowly work your way up to lifting heavier than before. This program is open to all different exercise levels from novice to seasoned attendees. If you want to get into shape, whether for personal or medical reasons, this program will help reach your goals. When it comes to eating, the team can help you understand whether the foods you are currently eating are helping or potentially, hurting you. You set your own goals on the foods you eat, but be aware of how much of it you are eating. CEFP team knows you are going to eat the sweets or greasy foods and they will help remind you to consider looking at healthier options or to remember to portion your food intake. Did you know it’s free to participate in this program? Yes! It’s free, there’s no membership fee! All that’s needed is your time, willingness to do the hard work and learn. You get free swag at the beginning and end of the program, and if you want to continue on for the next 6-months you can and it’s still free! The swag you’ll received at the beginning is a CEFP t-shirt, water bottle (high grade), Rubbermaid portion container and more. If you want to know what swag you’ll get at graduation, you’ll have to sign up and find out! The next CEFP class will start March 2022. For more information about the program, call 915-744-5201.

The return of Run for the Fallen BY ARMY COMMUNITY SERVICE (ACS) SURVIVOR OUTREACH SERVICES (SOS)
In 2007, the Army initiated the Survivor Outreach Services (SOS) Program to help eligible Survivors who lost their loved ones while on Active-Duty, with social and emotional support and financial counseling. Here at Fort Bliss, the program has continued to deliver on the Army’s commitment to Families of the Fallen by embracing and reassuring Survivors they are linked to the Army Family for as long as they desire. The Fort
Bliss SOS provides services to the Families of more than 220 Fallen service members. These services include but are not limited to; monthly Grief Support Group, Financial Education, Holiday Events, Day of Remembrance, Gold Star Spouses Day, and Gold Star Mothers and Families Day. SOS is always looking for ways to honor the Fallen and their Families and at the suggestion of one of the Gold Star Dads, Fort Bliss commenced the first annual Run for the Fallen on April 5, 2015. This event brought both the Fort Bliss and El Paso communities to support the Gold Star Families and has continued throughout the years. The 7th Annual Fort Bliss Run for the Fallen is a noncompetitive 5K run and walk which will be April 23 at the Field of Honor located at the corner of Cassidy and Sheridan Road. It is a way to honor Fort Bliss’ service members who have made the ultimate sacrifice. The event begins with a remembrance ceremony at 8:30 a.m. with the run and walk to follow at 9 a.m. The Army Community Service (ACS), SOS program’s solemn purpose is to honor the memories of those we have lost, and provide love and support for the Families they left behind. Registration will begin March 21 at Soto Physical Fitness Center or call 915-744-5785. For more information, call SOS at 915-568-5970 or follow on Facebook @Fort Bliss Survivor Outreach Services.

It’s no secret that outdoor adventures are plentiful in El Paso, but finding an activity you love can take time and some exploring. Although adventure is calling our names year-round here, the summer heat is hard to beat. So while cooler weather is still around, it’s the best time to get out and take advantage of outdoor activities and the services available at Fort Bliss Outdoor Recreation. HIKE: Fortunately, you don’t have to travel far before you run into the abundant hiking trail system in El Paso. ‘AllTrails’ is the go-to app to find hiking trails in the area. Some top-rated trails nearby are Tin Mines, Lazy Cow, and Cardiac Hill. The best family-friendly trails in the area include Chihuahuan Desert Nature Trail, Franklin Park, and Tom Mays Nature Walk. Looking for the best views on your day out? The trail difficulty may increase, but it will be worth it to push yourself. Trails in the area with the best views include Poppies Trail, Anthony’s Nose, Aztec Cave, Schaeffer Shuffle, and more! Have time on your hands for a hike farther away? Consider escaping to Guadalupe Mountains National Park, Cloudcroft, or Roswell to discover more vibrant colors in nature. Grab your hiking boots, trekking poles, and your hiking crew, and set out on your next hiking adventure! CLIMB: If you’re an avid climber then you won’t be disappointed to find that El Paso is located near the hub of some world-class climbing, and America’s #1 bouldering spot, Hueco Tanks. Open year-round, Hueco Tanks is a crag that every climber should visit at least once. The great thing about bouldering is, limited equipment is needed. Consider renting out a couple of bouldering crash pads at Outdoor Recreation, then grab your buddies for a full day at the crag. Whether you’re a sport climber, boulderer, or seeking some challenging trad routes, you’re sure to find your sweet spot nearby. Download the app ‘Mountain Project’ for quick access to nearby climbing routes, and easily filter through page 26

different climbing areas, styles of climbing available and challenging grades to push you towards your next project. Some other popular areas close by to start your search for beautiful climbs are the Franklin Mountains, Doña Ana Mountains and the Organ Mountains. CAMP: The desert is notorious for breathtaking camping spots under the stars. You can find a neverending resource of designated campgrounds across state parks in Texas and New Mexico, or take the primitive route and scout out your private camping spot. Consider using apps such as ‘The Dyrt’ or ‘FreeRoam’ to find some unique spots you wouldn’t know about otherwise, or check out onX Hunt/Backcountry to explore the options of public land the Bureau of Land Management has to offer. Missing a few items for your next camping trip? Stop by Outdoor Recreation on your way out to pick up items such as a sleeping bag or pad, a tent, camping stoves, coolers and even lanterns. RIDE: If you’re new to the area, it won’t take long to notice the strong bicycle culture present in the community. Mountain biking is all the rave here, and who can blame you? The trails are some of the most accessible in the region, offer grades for all skill levels, and the weather is nearly perfect year-round for a bike ride. If you’re looking for a place to start, the Fort Bliss Outdoor Recreation staff are the people to see! The experienced staff members offer mountain biking clinics periodically throughout the year but are also available anytime to answer questions about trails nearby and what kind of bike you need to get started. Before you make the leap and invest in an expensive bike, consider renting one of the many mountain bikes available at Outdoor Recreation, all designed to help you take on the road or trails nearby. Ready to see what trails are out there? Another app is ‘Mountain Bike Project’ where you can easily find trailheads, difficulty levels, and photos from other bikers who have left reviews. WARRIOR ADVENTURE QUEST: Calling all the Fort Bliss Active-Duty Soldiers! Warrior Adventure Quest (WAQ) is an Army RESET training tool designed to introduce Soldiers to activities that serve as alternatives to aberrant behaviors often associated with accidents involving recently re-deployed Soldiers. This tool presents coping outlets to help Soldiers realize their new level of normal after deployment and “move on” with their lives. WAQ combines existing MWR Outdoor Recreation high adventure activities with a leader-led after-action debriefing tool developed by Army Medical Department Center and School. The outdoor opportunities don’t end here. Whether you’re a hunter, runner, watersports lover, or hiker, Outdoor Recreation is here to serve you! Follow along this year for many activities to get you and your family active outside! Ready to start exploring today? A place to connect for single Soldiers BY DORI NIX FAMILY & MWR MARKETING
B.O.S.S. – you may have heard the term in passing, but do you know what it stands for? BOSS stands for Better Opportunity for Single Soldiers and is a wellconsidered program that is offered Army-wide. The mission of the BOSS program is to enhance the morale and welfare of single Soldiers, increase retention, and sustain combat readiness. BOSS is the collective voice of single Soldiers through the chain of command, which serves as a tool for commanders to gauge the morale of single Soldiers regarding qualityof-life issues. Additionally, BOSS sponsors a variety of activities before, during, and after deployment to maintain the morale of single Soldiers affected by increased operational tempo and deployment stress. The program is facilitated through three core components aimed at maintaining a balanced life: leisure and recreation, community service and quality of life. Quality of Life includes issues that Soldiers can directly or indirectly influence to enhance their morale, living environment, or personal growth and development. The Fort Bliss BOSS team works closely with units to ensure the needs of single Soldiers are met so that morale remains high. One of the biggest ways to take advantage of BOSS personal growth and development opportunities is to become a BOSS representative for your unit. Fort Bliss has BOSS representatives across the installation, but when they are low on representatives, building awareness of the BOSS program can be limiting. It is truly through the help of the representatives that the program is able to spread the word about BOSS activities and have such a large community established at Fort Bliss. This quarter there will be a BOSS Board Competition where representatives will compete for the best BOSS information boards across units. Can you spot where the BOSS board is in your unit? @blissmwr
Recreation and Leisure activities are well-known across the Fort Bliss BOSS community. Working closely with Outdoor Recreation, Warrior Zone, and other facilities on post, the BOSS monthly calendar is always full of fun to get Soldiers out and enjoy the community. Don’t have a ride? No excuses here! Transportation is offered along with other resources to easily accommodate your situation so you can participate. Some activities to look forward to this spring are climbing trips, a talent show, and even a Squid Game event inspired by the widely popular Netflix series, Squid Game. BOSS makes a difference by volunteering in community projects and events. This is always voluntary in nature, and Soldiers find this to be personally rewarding. BOSS Soldiers from Fort Bliss help out the community both on and off post. Some of the most popular volunteer events take place at the El Paso Animal Services Center, and every Wednesday at the YMCA. Also happening this quarter, they will be volunteering with the Fisher House Foundation, which builds comfort homes where military and veteran Families can stay free of charge, while a loved one is in the hospital. Fort Bliss BOSS is the place to connect for single Soldiers in El Paso. Whether you’re just looking to get out of the barracks, create awareness of resources for your fellow Soldiers, build your résumé with leadership and volunteer service, or just to simply have fun – the BOSS community has a place for you! Ready to join? BOSS is located in the Soldier Activity Center at 20732 Constitution Avenue. For more information, call or text 915-892-5195. DONATE TO HELP YOU & OTHERS BY MEGAN MORAN
ARMY EMERGENCY RELIEF (AER)
Since its inception in 1942, Army Emergency Relief (AER) has helped more than 4 million service members with $2 billion in assistance and $1 billion of that since 9/11. AER is the Army’s non-profit organization built solely on donations. This is why it is constantly evolving to offer over 30 categories of assistance in the form of grants, interest-free loans, a combination of both, and college scholarships for Soldiers’ dependents. AER has even added PCS pet transportation to its vast areas in which they can offer aid. AER was founded on the idea that “the Army helps its own” and it still does to this day, which is why your 2022 campaign donations are so important. The 2022 AER Campaign Kick-Off is just around the corner and you have the opportunity to give back locally. Last year, Fort Bliss AER raised $99,654 in donations and had an Active-Duty participation rate of 3.4%. In that same year, Fort Bliss AER helped over 1,500 Soldiers with more than $2 million in assistance made possible by donations. Help AER by helping each other, in achieving 100% participation here at Fort Bliss and exceed last year’s goal. Just imagine if each of the 37,000 total military members here at Fort Bliss gave as little as $1 per month, $12 per year, as an AER allotment. The $444,000 raised would far surpass last year’s AER campaign donations winner, Fort Jackson. They raised $171,660 to lead all of the large installations Army-wide. Many military Families feel like they do not need AER or they have a financial plan, but who could have ever page 36

predicted 2020. Why put unexpected expenses on a highinterest rate credit card when you may be able to qualify for a 0% loan. The reality is many people did not expect to have their household income cut in half, while a spouse was unemployed or watching children made to learn virtually from home. However, AER was ready to aid with homeschool supplies. No one ever really plans for the loss of family members, who does? One of AER’s categories of assistance is emergency travel and donations; it is how they can help those in need. With every dollar spent, $0.90 of it is donated to AER and goes directly to service members and their Families to help during the unexpected. The AER Campaign runs yearly from March 1 to May 15. A Soldier can donate as much as they want during the campaign, ranging from a one-time donation made online to a recurring donation directly allotted from their pay. Contact your unit AER representative for more information on donating, and be sure to follow us on Facebook to get the scoop on this years’ AER Campaign Kick-Off. Still have questions? Ready to donate but not sure how? Do you have an unexpected expense that AER might be able to help with? Come down and visit the Fort Bliss Army Emergency Relief office, located at 2494 Ricker Road. Office hours are Monday through Friday 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and closed Federal Holidays. If the office is closed, the American Red Cross can assist at 1-877-272-7337. www.bliss.armymwr.com

They can confirm your marital status on MyPay (Single/Married/Head of Household) and your number of Dependents under the age of 17. All of this will ensure you are not paying too much in Federal Tax. They will calculate your expected tax bill and tell you how to make changes. You can do all of this yourself if you are familiar, but they are here to help. Write your budget: When it comes to your money, writing what you get and what goes to everyone else is not always fun, but it is necessary. This part of the process allows you to see how your income and expenses are related. If you do not see the whole picture, it’s challenging to stay motivated. Plan to save: Service members should save nine months of income. You do not have to do it all at once. Look at the Entitlements on your Leave and Earning Statement (LES). Divide the total number by 12, then put that much

money in a high yield savings account. You will have your required amount before your fourth permanent change of station (PCS). Look at your bills and debts: It is difficult to remember how much each bill is in your household. Get a copy of each bill so you can use accurate information as you create your budget. The bill will also show you how much money you’re required to pay instead of how much you do pay. Plan for fun: How many trips will you take this year? Will you go on a Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers (BOSS) trip? Will you go to the movies or dining out? Plan what you can spend within your budget. Automate: After you make your written plan for financial success, simplify it by making it automatic. Either with allotments, through bank payments, or a combination of both, have your payments sent directly so that your financial plan to win works whether you are on a field training exercise, at the National Training Center, or deployed overseas. The goal is that your plan is executed wherever you are. Your budget should look something like this: Fixed Income + Variable Income – Investments and Savings – Fixed Expenses – Variable Expenses – Recreational Expenses = Surplus. If your surplus is not positive, then you have to cut some expenses (remember the recreational expenses). Remember, ACS has Financial Readiness specialists to help you create a budget, eliminate debt, reduce your taxes, and help you plan to retire wealthy!
