HONORING THEIR SACRIFICES

“April showers bring May flowers.”

Hmm … not sure this would apply here in El Paso, maybe it should say, “April winds steal all your bins?”

Nevertheless, what May does bring is recognition for Military Spouses and Moms! First up, on the calendar is Military Spouse Appreciation Day held Friday, May 12. Military Spouse Appreciation was first recognized by President Ronald Reagan in 1984. It has always been celebrated the Friday before Mother’s Day.

MILITARY SPOUSE APPRECIATION

In a Proclamation by President Reagan it stated, “Throughout the years, as the numbers of our married men and women in uniform have grown and as their military missions have become more complex and dispersed, their spouses have made countless personal sacrifices to support the Armed Forces – As volunteers, military spouses have provided exemplary service and leadership in educational, community, recreational, religious, social and cultural endeavors. And as parents and homemakers, they preserve the cornerstone of our Nation's strength—the American family.”

In previous years, Fort Bliss MWR would honor spouses with one great event held with Army Community Service (ACS). This year, it was decided to do two special events for spouses to have the ability to celebrate all day long! Spouses Night Out is the

newest addition to the MWR calendar and it was added to ensure, all spouses were accommodated, to include those who work during the day.

MOTHER'S DAY

According to history.com, Mother’s Day was originated by Anna Jarvis, she was the daughter of Anne Reeves Jarvis – who established Mother’s Day work clubs and organized Mothers’ Friendship Day to promote reconciliation, years prior to the Civil War. Anna Jarvis originated the idea of Mother’s Day to honor all mothers who made sacrifices for their children after her mother’s death. On May 9, 1914, President Woodrow Wilson issued a Proclamation that set the official date of Mother’s Day to be celebrated the second Sunday in May.

It’s a busy weekend as Fort Bliss MWR celebrates Mother’s Day on Sunday, May 14! What better way to honor Mom than with food and fun! Enjoy a delicious brunch at either the Centennial or Rod & Gun Club and then head to Desert Strike Lanes for a bowling special all day. Moms can also take part in a candle-making class at Art & Hobby Shop. Fort Bliss MWR has moms and spouses covered this month!

The weather is beautiful this time of year, go outside and enjoy this wonderful installation and unique surrounding city. You do not want to miss your chance to spend time with Fort Bliss MWR in May!
