ABOUT THE COVER The Army observes November as Month of the Military Family. Family and MWR had a contest for a Military Family to be placed on the cover of this fall issue; however, we couldn’t choose just one photo. It was narrowed down to three photos, and still it was a hard decision. So this issue there are three different covers on display. Each one used hashtag words to describe their families. In no particular order is: #AGirlsSoldier (Father and daughter), #BlessedBeyondMeasure (Family walking toward helicopter) and #PatrioticandAdventurous (Family at McKelligon Canyon). All photos submitted captured the unique character and essence of their families. See all the submitted photos on pages 24 -25. Thank you for your participation Fort Bliss Military Families! @blissmwr @blissmwr @blissmwr

NEW YEAR’S EVE BINGO OCT | NOV | DEC

page 17

is F-U-N! Aneta Veedmont

Family and MWR Marketing

You may not often realize it, but bingo can be a lot of fun and an exciting game. It is like playing the lottery with randomly chosen numbers. Thoughts of winning fill your mind, and the rush of adrenaline gets extreme in anticipation for that word we all want to shout, “B-I-N-G-O!!!” Most of us have been to a bingo game, and know that the game is really simple. Have you ever wondered how bingo really got started? The history of the game traces back to the year 1530, to an Italian lottery known as “Lo Giuoco del Lotto D’Italia.” Believe it or not, it is still being played in Italy every Saturday to this day. Because of its popularity, Bingo traveled to France, where it was modernized in the 1770’s. The game cards created had three horizontal rows and nine vertical, with the numbers 1 through 90 in random arrangements. Back then, numbers were drawn from a sack, and the first person to completely cover a horizontal row was the winner. Originally called “beano,” Bingo arrived in the United States in the 1920’s. Edwin Lowe, a New York salesman, in cooperation with a mathematician Cark Leffler, modernized the game and developed thousands of combinations of numbered game cards. Presumably, it was Lowe who changed the game’s

page 18

OCT | NOV | DEC

name when one player, in excited confusion when he was near to complete his game card, shouted out “Bingo!” instead of “beano.” The name Bingo has stuck ever since. Today, Bingo has warmed its way into the hearts of many! This popular game has also taken root in a younger generation that wants to play the game for fun and socialization. Facts show, people play bingo for the sheer enjoyment of the game; and winning the jackpot is an added bonus. Surprisingly enough winning is not even the #1 reason people play – it’s the fifth! December is recognized as Bingo Month, so get ready to shout, “Bingo!” Whether you win a little or a lot, come out and join in the fun at Bingo Bliss every Wednesday and Saturday at the Metro Bingo Bar, inside the Centennial Banquet and Conference Center, located at 11199 Sgt. E. Churchill Street. Who doesn’t want to hit the jackpot? Well, Bingo Bliss will give you a chance to win a progressive Jackpot on a Wednesday or Guaranteed Jackpot on Super Saturday Bingo night. If you are 18 or older, head out to the Centennial to have a good time! Drinks and food service are available during Bingo Bliss nights. Kick off 2019 with a little extra cash in your pocket, amazing food and champagne at New Year’s Eve Bingo! The doors open at 4:30 p.m. Dec. 31 at the Centennial Metro Bingo Bar. The cost is $50, which includes a bingo paper pack, dinner buffet and champagne! What’s not to enjoy? Tickets will be available for advance purchase or at the door, if space is still available, so get your tickets early. This event is open to DOD ID cardholders and their guests, ages 18 and older. TEAM ACE THEIR WAY TO NATIONALS

Rachelle Phillips

Family and MWR Marketing

There’s a little hidden gem here at Fort Bliss, right behind the houses on Sheridan Road. A place many of you would be surprised to learn has existed here since the early 1970s. This place is the Tennis Club & Fitness Zone, located at 262 Club Road. It’s changed a lot in the last 40+ years. Improvements include five new courts, lights, shades, benches and a fully equipped gym but one thing has never changed, the team and their accomplishments have remained constant over the years. It may also surprise you that Fort Bliss’ very own 3.5 Men’s Tennis Team will be competing against 17 other sections from the United States Tennis Association

@blissmwr @blissmwr @blissmwr

(USTA) League in Arlington, Texas. They recently defeated the competition in Tucson, Albuquerque, Las Cruces and Phoenix to reach the nationals. The team is led by Dr. Min Kim, a pharmacist at William Beaumont Army Medical Center (WBAMC). They will compete for the Nationals USTA Championship, October 19 through 21. Another proud moment for the Fort Bliss Tennis Club is when the 7.0 and 8.0 Mixed Teams won their local championships. They will represent Fort Bliss in the Sectionals, September 28 through 30 in Tucson, Arizona. If the team wins there, they will get to compete in the USTA National Championship within their class. The Tennis Club and Fitness Zone is a place for everyone from beginners to advance players. The Fort Bliss Tennis Teams consist of five playing levels from 2.5 to 4.5. The 2.5 Team is the beginner level followed by 3.0 and 3.5 Mid-level, and 4.0 and above advanced. The Fort Bliss Tennis teams are always looking for new players to join the family. There are different age and skill level lessons available Mondays and

Wednesdays. Hello friends, Milo here, your favorite Family and MWR mascot! I wanted to let you know that October is Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog Month! I encourage people to adopt, not shop for their new family member. There are more dogs than ever that need good homes, but please remember dogs are a huge commitment. There are many things to consider before adopting such as time commitment, grooming, health care and training, just to mention a few. If you are unable to adopt, I have put together a list of other ways you can still help pets in need:

Donate

Donate to your local shelter or rescue group.

Foster

Sign up as a foster parent or shelter volunteer and encourage others to do the same.

@blissmwr @blissmwr @blissmwr

Get the word out

Share an adoptable dog on your social media channels to gain awareness.

Ask around

Contact your local shelter or rescue group and ask if they have a donation wish list or other flyers they would like to you to post around your office or neighborhood. They may be holding special events for Adopt-AShelter-Dog Month which you can help promote. I was a shelter dog and was fortunate enough to get adopted almost 4 years ago and I couldn’t be more thankful, my MWR parents are the best and they take really good care of me. I hope you can make a difference in a shelter pet’s life just as they did mine. For more information on how you can help, reach out to our local Humane Society and other shelters in the El Paso area.

BEHIND THE SCENES WITH

UNDERWOOD

GOLF COMPLEX

Family and MWR Marketing

The sun is rising over the east horizon of El Paso, and the smell of fresh cut grass surrounds the Underwood Golf Complex. Early risers have already set off on the course to start the day with a round of golf. The Golden Tee Restaurant and Bar offers breakfast and refreshments to start the day with a full stomach. The Pro Shop provides help with necessities such as a cart, golf balls and more. It takes a village to maintain this large facility, from the cut grass to the meals prepared – Underwood Golf is one of the largest golf courses in the Army. Let’s go “Behind the Scenes” of Underwood Golf Complex and see how 32 staff members work together to give you a great golfing experience.

oversight of the entire facility. “Our mission is solely focused on providing service to our Soldiers and their Families and to all of our guests,” said Dallas. “It takes a lot of hard work behind the scenes to run an operation, there’s a lot of future planning that takes place to be in the best position possible. I’m very proud of my staff here, they work hard to give great quality service at this facility.” The Underwood Golf Complex has clinics for children, Active-Duty and their spouses. Underwood Golf works with Child Youth Services (CYS) programs providing clinics for children several times throughout the year. Underwood has also been working with The First Tee of Greater El Paso for more than three years. For four weeks throughout the summer, Underwood Golf help teach children – who are part of the program – to learn about integrity and ethics, how to play golf and proper life skills. Other clinics such as Hook a Soldier on Golf, is held every Saturday for Active-Duty and their Families where they receive one hour of free instruction. Service member spouses get free lessons as well, every second Wednesday on the month.

Each employee delivers a clean, well-preserved and friendly facility. They work diligently to keep loyal and new golfers satisfied year-round. There is one administrative assistant, Kristine Woodson, who manages finances, payroll and more. Groundskeeping Dallas Cooke, manager of the Underwood Golf Complex, has The Underwood Golf Complex has two 18-hole courses, one is the Sunset – a parkland-style landscape and the other is Sunrise – a desert-style course. In order to preserve the upkeep of the grounds, staff members such as tractor operators, irrigation technicians and mechanics try to consistently refresh the grass and keep it nicely cut. Currently, 13 groundskeeping staff members maintain more than 130 acres of turf at Underwood. When the weather is good, you’ll see them out there in the

early mornings cutting the grass at five different measurement heights. They spray insecticides and herbicides to keep bugs and weeds off the landscapes. It can be difficult to keep the grounds green, especially here in the desert area. “We have the ability to water from Sunrise to Sunset course with no problem, we have three lakes on this side (Sunrise course). There are two wells (one on each course) and then there’s a 170,000 gallon storage tank, that pumps water from the well on Sunset,” said Jesse Vasquez, superintendent of groundskeeping at Underwood Golf Complex. “It takes a lot of ground work and man hours and can be very expensive to keep the golf course well-maintained.”

Pro Shop

The Pro shop offers a variety of services. They have the latest equipment including, clubs, golf balls, shoes, and accessories. They carries the newest styles of apparel from Under Armour, FootJoy, Adidas and Puma. Inside the Pro Shop, there are nine staff members; four, who work at the front counter; four recreational aids, who work outside with the golf carts and driving range and one administrative assistant. The Pro Shop hosts a variety of events from charity events to championships. It offers custom fittings for clubs using the TrackMan launch monitor and simulator. These technologies are located inside the Performance Center. There you can take advantage of the snack bar, ESPN channels, and private bathrooms and still practice your golf game using the Trackman and Golf Stimulator. The Trackman tracks your club path, face angle, direction swing and more. The Simulator takes you to a variety of golf courses worldwide! The Pro Shop at Underwood is unique be-

cause it offers more variety than most of the other courses. “I take great pride in our Pro shop and the merchandising aspect of it. I have been nominated on two occasions for merchandiser of the year in the Sun Country Golf Section, which includes all of New Mexico and West Texas,” said Kenneth Meador, assistant business manager and golf professional at Underwood Golf Complex. Kenneth and Dallas are both PGA professionals, which entails many different titles. “PGA Professionals wear many hats,” said Kenneth. “We are salesman, merchandisers, teachers, counselors, motivational speakers, therapists, event coordinators, marketers, and much more. Teaching is one of the greatest things we get to do.”

Golden Tee Restaurant & Bar

Underwood Golf is more than just a large golf course, they serve delicious food and arrange large gatherings for military units, tournaments, banquets and more at the Golden Tee Restaurant and Bar. “We hold a great deal of functions ranging in size from 20 to 250 guests for local organizations, Fort Bliss Military units and private parties. That doesn’t include the many golf tournaments we help to support throughout the year,” said Devin Rice, business manager of the Golden Tee. “As far as Quinceañeras and weddings go, we hold a small number each year from 5 to 10. However, we just completed our 90th party contract of the fiscal year.” There are nine staff members working at the Golden Tee; three kitchen staff members, three waitresses and two staff members out on the course providing snacks and refreshments.

The Army observes Military Family Month to recognize and honor military Family members for their unique contributions and daily sacrifices while supporting the Army mission. The month was established in 2003 by the Armed Services YMCA and affirms the Army’s commitment to strengthen the readiness and resilience of the Army Family. New 5K run/walk with your best buddy Teia Mack

Family and MWR Sport and Fitness

It’s time to run with your favorite paw buddy! Claus and Paws 5K Fun Run/Walk is Dec. 1 at Soto Physical Fitness Center. Start training for this fun-filled event, right now is a great time for you and your dog to get outside and train! These fun runs benefit not only your health, but four-legged friends as well, make it a team effort! Running can seem like a scary sport to break into if you are not a natural born runner, but with your furry companion by your side, it just might be fun! Joining in on this run/walk with your pup also gives you a good chance to meet new people and pups! Running with your dog is a great way to help burn their pent-up energy while benefitting you mentally and physically as well. It is important to train together before the event. Your dog needs to warm up and cool down just like you do. It’s recommended to do a five-minute slow walk, followed by a five-minute trot, as both a warm-up and a cool-down. Make sure it’s cool enough for your dog to run safely. Please

remember that dogs don’t sweat, they pant to release heat and can go into heat stroke if overheated. Be mindful of your dog’s fitness level and health condition. If they need to slow down then allow them to do so. Be sure your dog is comfortable around crowds. Visit public, dog-friendly places and see how your dog behaves around large groups of people and other dogs. Best place to try out is a dog park. Lastly, only healthy and well-behaved dogs should participate in the race. When in doubt consult your veterinarian. Monitor your dog’s well-being during the event. Be sure to bring plenty of water for you and your dog and of course, don’t forget the poop bags! We want this to be a fun and active event and encourage participants to dress in their favorite holiday attire! The run/walk starts at 9 a.m. at Soto PFC, the cost is $10 per person. Early registration is now through Nov. 28 available at Milam, Soto and Stout PFCs, or online at raceroster. com. Late registration will be taken day of event from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. and a late fee will be incurred at $20 per person. For more information, call 915-744-5793.

Before the hustle and bustle of the holidays, take some time off and sneak away to the mountains of Ruidoso.

CAMP BLISS: A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A SOLDIER

Aneta Veedmont

Family and MWR Marketing

Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation (FMWR) and Child Youth Services (CYS) are bringing local educators together, Nov. 2, for an opportunity to glimpse into the daily lives of the military at the annual Camp Bliss event held at the Family Resilience Center (FRC). The School Liaison Office, lead organizer for Camp Bliss, established this event in 2009 with the intent of providing a greater understanding of the installation, building bridges, and dissolving negative perceptions. “The main focus of Camp Bliss is to

engage Soldiers and representatives from Fort Bliss agencies to provide social and emotional resources that will better equip local educators to identify, intervene, and support Military Families,” said Patricia Lopez, Fort Bliss School Liaison officer. This year’s event aims to empower educators with greater understanding of the military culture and the impact of transition and deployment. Ten area school districts representing various levels of responsibilities – such as administrators, principals, teachers, counselors, and military liaison officers – have been invited to participate in activities at different Fort Bliss locations. These activities are specifically designed to let the educators experience how hard some transitional phases in the military can be. “We want to provide information and knowledge of the deployment cycle, bring awareness to possible stressors that might influence learning and behavior in the classroom, and offer strategies teachers can use in the classroom to help students cope with those issues,” said Lopez. “By providing valuable information and resources that support children during transition and deployment, our students become more resilient and thrive academically.” Educators will have a chance to work

in teams at the Leadership Reaction Course at the LRC Compound, an activity intended to give them hands-on experience of what Soldiers do; as well as, encouraging positive self-esteem through peer-to-peer cooperation. Experiencing a visit and having lunch at one of the installation’s dining facilities will give participants a face-toface opportunity to have conversations with Soldiers about their career choice, family transition and how deployment has impacted their dynamics, children and family relations. Educators attending this outstanding event will not only gain a sense of ownership and accountability to effectively meet the needs of their transitioning students, but they will also walk away equipped with knowledge and resources to support the Military Family and child. This training will also feature a panel discussion with Soldiers, military wives and students to discuss today’s challenges in military culture and the impact of transition and deployment. Camp Bliss Day will conclude with a resource fair at the Family Resilience Center (FRC), where Fort Bliss and community agencies will provide information and materials available to help the military families. MAKING A CHANGE CAN SAVE A LIFE Olusola Arowosegbe Family and MWR ACS

Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) is a National event that is held each year in the month of October since being passed into law by the U.S Congress in 1989. For many years, the Fort Bliss community has been observing DVAM to create awareness and education of the seriousness of domestic violence in our military community. The Family Advocacy Program (FAP) and Victim Advocacy

will host different events; such as Thanks for Asking exercise, BBQ Movie Night, Freeze Mob and informational tables throughout the month of October. These events will be held at the Army Community Service (ACS) building, Family Resilience Center (FRC) and throughout the community, educating Soldiers, Families and civilians about domestic violence. In 2017, the Fort Bliss Victim Advocacy Program (VAP) initiated the Thanks for Asking exercise to educate the community on how to respond to victims of domestic violence and knowing the resources that are available. After the exercise, they realized that there is more work to do in educating both page 38

OBSERVANCE OF 2018 DVAM EVENTS: KICK-OFF: Oct. 1 from 9 to 11 a.m. at ACS building.

THANKS FOR ASKING EXERCISE and informational tables throughout the community MOVIE/BBQ NIGHT: Oct. 18 at Family Resilience Center (FRC), registration starts at 5 p.m. and the event will be at 6:30 p.m. There is free childcare available on-site. This event will focus on prevention, education and creating healthy relationships. Soldiers and civilians in dealing with this uncomfortable topic. The Thanks for Asking exercise won the “Best Domestic Violence Awareness Month Innovative Ideas” among all other Army military installations world-wide. More than 67 cases of domestic violence were reported with Fort Bliss ACS/VAP in the 2018 fiscal year. Domestic violence does not occur based on sexual orientation, religion, ethnicity or one particular culture, it’s a universal phenomenon. It affects men, women and the children exposed to the danger in their own home. According to National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV), 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have been victims of some form of physical violence by an intimate partner. What can be done to prevent or reduce domestic violence in our military community? Fort Bliss ACS/FAP offers a variety of free classes to Soldiers, Family Members, civilians and retirees. Some of the classes are Scream-Free Marriage, ScreamFree Parenting, Couples Communication, Stress Management, Anger Management and more. Child care vouchers are available to participants, if needed. As a community, we can support victims by encouraging them to come forward about domestic violence. The military community should work together to find effective measures to significantly reduce the incidents of domestic violence. Identifying potential abusers and victims, using correctional measures, reducing stressors, and providing appropriate resources are some of the ways to combat domestic violence. The Army does not condone domestic violence behavior. Domestic violence is a huge problem and it will take each and every one of us to make a positive impact in our community. Victims should not be scorned; rather they should be treated with empathy and respect. The involvement, commitment and resourcefulness as a community or individual can help save a life. For more information, call 915-568-9129 or 915-569-4227. There is a hotline open 24/7 with Fort Bliss Victim Advocacy Program, call 915-269-2013. www.bliss.armymwr.com

HOLIDAY TRAVEL ON A BUDGET

Pamela Thomas

Family and MWR ACS

When people think about the holidays, most will picture family, food and fun; because this is meant to be an enjoyable time of the year. Too often, people have overspent money during the holiday season and the initial picture of family, food, and fun has turned to the reality of, “How am I going to pay off this debt I’ve created?” Whether you are having a staycation or you are travelling, establish a budget. As you begin to create your budget, make sure you

Army Family Team Building (AFTB) is a series of training modules that improve personal and family preparedness, enhancing overall Army readiness and helping America’s Army adapt to a changing world. AFTB offers three levels of training modules such as Military Knowledge, Personal Growth & Resilience and Leadership Development. These levels offer a series of 30 classes that provide progressive instruction to equip family members with the skills necessary to navigate through the Army system. They will learn to understand the military mission/way of life and successfully access the many resources and services available at Army installations. @blissmwr @blissmwr @blissmwr

are covering all expenses. If you are having a staycation, think about this: how much are you planning on spending for gifts? Will family be visiting? How much extra will you spend on food? If you are traveling, consider the following expenses: Airfare, hotel, fuel (if driving), food, sightseeing, and account for unexpected expenses. Once you’ve completed the budget, decide how to effectively save the required money. One way this can be accomplished is to save in advance, normally in January, and open a savings account

dedicated to your holiday vacation. Then, establish a monthly amount you want to deposit into the holiday savings account. To do so, figure out how much you plan to spend for the holidays – and if you start saving in January – divide the total by 11 (months). For example, if you are planning to spend $2,500 for the holidays, divide that by 11 and your monthly deposit to the savings will be $230. When you save from January through November, you will then have the cash you need to ensure your holidays are financially stress-free.

This is not the time to “wingit” as it could become costly. Instead, take the time to complete your research and prioritize your wants/needs. For example, you may want to stay in a hotel instead of staying with family, but after completing your research, you’ve discovered the hotel expense is placing you over your budget. With technology at our fingertips, the internet affords us the opportunity to shop for bargains.

Each year, SKIES hosts the STAR Mountain Classic, a gymnastics meet that takes place on post! This is an inhouse competition where levels 1-4 may compete, and learn how gymnastics meets and events run. Older students not only compete, but they also help the staff as runners. Parents volunteer their time to help set up the gym. This year, the STAR Mountain Classic will be Oct. 27 at Bldg. 131A Doniphan Road. All registered level 1-4 gymnasts may participate in this event. Come join the event, as a participant or a spectator in the crowd! The military youth love performing their routines and appreciate your support. SKIESUnlimited Cheer program offers year round cheer activities. Cheerleaders have fun cheering at recreational football games in the fall. During winter, cheerleaders experience cheering at basketball games. Throughout the year, cheerleaders perform at special events to showcase skills such as dance, tumbling, and cheer jumps. When available, cheerleaders get a chance to compete in a cheer competition. Last year, Team Bliss Cheer brought home the first place trophy in their division.
