JAN | FEB | MAR

www.bliss.armymwr.com

Hello Friends, Milo here, your favorite Family and MWR mascot! It’s getting pretty chilly outside, whether you’re an outdoor dog lover or prefer the coziness and warmth of the indoors, like myself. You, as pet owners, should be prepared to keep us safe this season. There is a misconception by many, that because we pets have a furry coat we can tolerate the winter weather better than humans. That’s not true, we actually need a little extra care as the cold weather is “ruff” on us too. If it’s too cold for you to stand at the door without your coat, it’s probably too cold for your dog too. Unsure of what to do? Well, Milo’s to the rescue! Here are some tips to help prevent winter health risks: 1. Although a sweater may be helpful to keep your pet’s temperature up, it will not prevent frostbite, so do not leave your furry friend out in freezing temperatures for too long. 2. Avoid early morning and late evening walks, try to catch the sun as it has added benefits for both you and your pal. 3. I suggest warm blankets, raised beds or if you really want to spoil us, you can get one of those heated pet beds. I have one and OMG, it is the best thing since sliced bread. 4. The cold weather can cause havoc on our skin. You can help prevent dry, flaky skin by adding a skin and coat supplement to our food. Coconut oil is a good natural moisturizer and can be added to our food or topically like lotion, if needed. @blissmwr

5. Your dog may need an extra layer in the winter, but it needs to come from a coat and not a layer of fat. Cold temperatures may bring on some lazy behavior, so be attentive to your dog’s activity level and adjust calories accordingly. I personally am looking pretty good this winter and I’m planning on staying in tip top shape for the summer. 6. Keep us hydrated, it is just as easy for us to dehydrate in the winter, as it is in the summer. Watch for ice to form on water bowls too, if kept outside. 7. Paw care is “IM-PAW-TANT!” The snow can freeze in between your pooch’s paws, so trimming the hair in between the pads is a good idea to avoid discomfort. You should rinse and dry your pet’s paws after walking as the salt on roads and sidewalks can burn their pads and can be toxic. 8. Last but surely not least. NEVER, ever, leave us unattended in a car. Just as cars can get dangerously hot in summer, freezing cold temperatures are equally dangerous for your dog in winter as well. If you are going out to run errands, just leave us at home where it is warm and cozy. I hope this helps you understand us a little more; and gives you comfort knowing you are doing what you can to keep your beloved pet safe and warm this winter. I have a warm blanket in front of the fireplace waiting for me, so I’ll catch you in the spring. Happy New Year!

Paws and kisses,

JAN | FEB | MAR

Bring out your GREEN! BY ANETA VEEDMONT FAMILY & MWR MARKETING

St. Patrick’s Day is a global celebration of Irish heritage every March 17. But how many of us can really say that we know who St. Patrick is – or who he was? His real name was Maewyn Succat, and he was born in Britain in the fourth century. He arrived in Ireland at the age of 16, and became interested in Christianity. This is when he started teaching others about the religion. He is said to have converted many of the country’s residents to Christianity. St. Patrick was not only the Patron Saint of Ireland, but he is also the patron saint of Australia, Nigeria and Montserrat, which gives him a universal recognition in the Church and in the world. Historians have said, St. Patrick’s Day is observed on March 17, presumably the date of his death. In the United States, the first St. Patrick’s Day parade was held in New York on March 17, 1762, and it consisted of a small group of Irish New Yorkers marching to Irish music and reconnecting with their ancestry. The color green is widely recognized, because of the shamrock – the national symbol of Ireland. Traditions today vary, a common one is the infamous leprechauns, a reason you are supposed to wear green on St. Patrick’s Day — or risk getting pinched! St. Patrick’s Day has become an opportunity for everyone — Irish or “Irish at heart”— to celebrate this holiday with dancing, delicious Irish food and drinks, and a whole lot of green. Check out events that are happening this St. Paddy’s Day weekend, for you to enjoy. Participate in the St. Patrick’s Day Tournament, March 16, at the beautiful Underwood Golf Complex! There will be a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. This event is a three person scramble with long drive and closest to the pin contests. Mulligans will be available for

Just try it!

Tennis brings out the fun for beginners Hello spouses and the Fort Bliss community, Welcome to our new Bliss NOW fitness column! Here I will be featuring the “Class Experience” via all of the amazing fitness opportunities Fort Bliss MWR has to offer! Please join me each issue, as I – a member of the marketing team and a military spouse – brave a new fitness class for the first time. We hope that this will encourage and inspire you to go out and join a class you have been wanting to try! Today, I went to a Group Tennis Class at the Tennis Club and Fitness Zone. The class is designed for beginners to intermediate players, but everyone is welcome. I must admit, on the way there, I was feeling a bit nervous and anxious. Will everyone be nice, or will they be reserved towards a newcomer? Will they all be experienced? Well, I am delighted to announce that I had a blast! Everyone was very nice and welcoming. Ursula “Uschi” Morawietz, the director of the Tennis Club and Fitness Zone, and Joaquin, assistant coach, were very friendly and encouraging. I found the class easy to participate in and I received a lot of helpful instruction on how to hold my racket, hitting techniques, how to serve and different match strategies. We did a light warm up, then did a series of different drills together as a group. We ended the class

with some fun doubles matches and a small tournament. The class was easy going, yet had opportunities to squeeze in some light cardio. Fortunately, I was having so much fun, I didn’t even notice the workout. The other girls were of various skill levels and from all over the world, which made things fun and helped make me feel comfortable. And the view… oh my goodness, it was beautiful. Sunshine on the Franklin mountains paired with the fresh crisp air made the experience that much more enjoyable. The tennis courts and the club were very nice, which definitely added to the overall experience. If you’re interested in trying out this class, they are available Mondays and Wednesdays from 8:30 to 10 a.m. You can call ahead of time to reserve a spot or walk-ins are welcome. Each class is $12.50 – or there’s a monthly rate available – and there are rackets available to use if needed. The Tennis Club and Fitness Zone is located at 262 Club Road. For more information, call 915-569-5448. I am so happy I went and super excited to go again. Thank you so much for reading my column and I hope that you enjoyed it. I hope you have been inspired to go out and try out a class you’ve had your eye on. Thank you to my tennis class for, “being part of our story.” Want to be part of the MWR story? Follow us on Facebook @blissmwr and find out where I will be next!

Cheers!

Behind the Scenes:

BY NATALIE HINOJOS FAMILY & MWR MARKETING

Today is the day you go to the pool to get some exercise. You check in at the Aquatics Training Center (ATC), where you plan to do a couple of laps around the training pool. Once ready, you dive in and begin your routine. You notice someone is unconscious, floating in the lane next to you, then all of a sudden a lifeguard jumps in to help. Everything happens so quickly, as the other lifeguards bring out a wooden board to place the person on top of, the first response diver brings the unconscious person to the surface. As a team, they pull them in while asking questions to see if the person is responsive. No answer. A lifeguard begins Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), as the rest of the team calls 9-1-1. There’s a great sigh of relief, when the person begins to breathe on their own. All lifeguards on post, train for incidents like this. “Once a month on Friday night, the lifeguards spend three hours here (ATC) doing all of their rescue skills,” said Charlie Armendariz, aquatics manager of the ATC. “They have to be ready to respond with their equipment and it can be intense, because we are grading them on, ‘how ready are you to make a rescue.’” Team response and deep-water rescue are two — of many — training methods lifeguards perform once a month at the ATC. They are timed on the task at hand, from the moment the whistle blows, until the lifeguards give their first ventilation. “As humans we only have a minimum of two

minutes of oxygen deprivation before brain damage begins to occur,” said Miriam Carlos, lead lifeguard at the ATC. “We try to get them (lifeguards) to save a person within a minute and 30 seconds.” Let’s go into the depths of the ATC and see what this facility has to offer Soldiers and their families. The majority of people, who come to the ATC, use the facility to attend regular classes such as Aqua Float, Water Aerobics, Hydrocycle, parent and baby swim class and more. Other times patrons are doing laps, enjoying the multipurpose pool with their children, or attending one of the family friendly events. The ATC opens their doors to all service members and local diving teams to use the facility for their personal or work trainings. Even SKIESUnlimited instructors use the ATC for their swimming lessons. “This is where I do all my swim lessons,” said Rebecca Wickenheiser, SKIESUnlimited instructor. “I teach ages three to seven, we do little competitions and games so they can be comfortable in the water.” If you’re interested in signing your child up for swim lessons with SKIESUnlimited, they must be registered with Child and Youth Services (CYS) and can sign up for the class with SKIES. “We have so much to offer —not only for Active Duty, but for their families as well,” said Miriam. “We have so many trainings and activities that so many people can come and join. If you just want to swim, you have the option in one building to go and relax in a warm pool, or to go and swim laps in the other.”

But it’s not only for recreational purposes, it supports triathlons, aquathlons and for a third year, the ATC has been selected as the Southwest Region host for the Army Warrior Trials. It is also a place where lifeguards and Soldiers learn and train for real-life experiences. “I have a very good team of lifeguards, there’s 65 of them and we oversee all the pools on Fort Bliss,” said Charlie. “They have won the Lifeguard Olympics for three years in a row, which is sponsored by the Christian Castle Drowning Prevention Coalition of El Paso. They compete with all of their rescue skills once a year against 40 different teams throughout the city, Las Cruces and Albuquerque, NM. This year they placed first, second and third.” Once a week, lifeguards — during their shift — are required to complete training. They swim 500 meters every time they work and practice a technique. It helps lifeguards to be alert, stay fit and to keep them sharp on their skills. But it doesn’t stop there, the ATC offers Combat Water Survival Training (CWST) and Shallow Water Egress Training (SWET) for Soldiers throughout the year. CWST provides basic survival skills; such as, learning how to turn their Army combat uniforms (ACUs) into flotation devices, or how to stay alive if they experience hypothermia and more. During this training, Soldiers become certified trainers and are able to teach their units what they’ve learned. SWET provides Soldiers with real-life experiences in a dunker chair, this exercise simulates what would happen if their vehicle

was suddenly submerged in water. Soldiers are strapped into the dunker chair, that is designed to flip over under shallow water, and they have to find a way to get out of it. “It’s a simulator, they are buckled in and we do three rotations,” said Charlie. “It’s complete disorientation, what is up, is now down and what is left, is now right. We start off with the very basic roll over and they get progressively harder. Once we flip the chair over we can’t turn it back. So they really need to know how to escape, we watch and guide them through it, when needed.” The ATC also offers unlimited swimming lessons to Active Duty Soldiers for $30 a month. There are many other classes provided to Soldiers and their families, so what are you waiting for? Come by and learn how to swim, float or maybe learn the basics of CPR. It’s all provided at the ATC. In the Bliss NOW Spring issue, we will be going “Behind the Scenes” with Survivor Outreach Services (SOS).

JOIN TEAM BLISS! SPECIAL OLYMPICS IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER BY LORRAINE RODRIGUEZ, BRITTANY HILL AND JACKIE GARCIA FAMILY & MWR EFMP

“Let us win, but if I cannot win, let us be brave in the attempt,” Special Olympics oath. This is the fifth year the Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP) has organized Team Bliss to compete in the El Paso Region of Special Olympics of Texas. Since then, it has strengthened confidence and enhanced the self-esteem of the athletes, while building lifelong relationships. Be a part of a winning team by joining Team Bliss, a troupe of Special Olympic athletes and volunteers, who are working to make a difference. Special Olympics is nothing short of a transformational and rewarding experience. The athletes have the time of their lives as they practice and come to realize they can achieve their goals. Becoming a volunteer or coach for Team Bliss is a rewarding and powerful experience. “My experience with EFMP and Special Olympics while at Fort Bliss gave me so much more than I could have expected,” said Bailey Rainey, coach for the 2018 Special Olympics. “As someone who never participated in track and field myself, I was apprehensive about being able to ‘teach’ the athletes anything. But everyone was so accepting and worked together as a team to make Team

Bliss the success it was.” As a volunteer you have the ability to shape and have a positive impact on the athletes’ lives. Without the help and determination of volunteers and coaches, the athletes wouldn’t be able to compete to their fullest capabilities. There is also a personal feeling of satisfaction and fulfillment that comes from working with these athletes and bringing them together as a cohesive group. “The biggest thing I’ve learned from being around the athletes is, it’s not about what we teach them at all,” said Rainey. “It’s about giving them the opportunity to succeed and participate in something so many of us take for granted. I am so lucky to have experienced all of it!” Team Bliss has provided athletes with a positive environment to achieve their goals. Through the Special Olympic experience, more athletes have discovered new talents and hobbies that continue to serve them long after the Olympic torch is extinguished. For more information about joining the Team Bliss Special Olympics team, call EFMP at 915-569-4227, ext. 5 or the School Liaison Office at 915-568-2784. Recognizing true heroism How do you recognize your child’s resilience, courage and sacrifices? At Fort Bliss, the Family Advocacy Program (FAP) will be recognizing military children and youth for their heroism, character and continued resilience during the annual awareness walk. Since 1986, the Department of Defense has declared the month of April as the “Month of the Military Child.” It is during this month that we highlight the important role military children play in the Armed Forces communities and recognize their personal sacrifices. Fort Bliss and other military installations worldwide will celebrate military children through various events and activities including fairs, picnics, carnivals, parades and more. Fort Bliss will celebrate the 15th annual Month of the Military Child/ Child Abuse and Sexual Assault (MCCASA) one mile awareness walk, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., April 6 at Biggs Park, located at 11388 Sgt. Major Blvd. The MCCASA walk is aimed to enhance Soldiers and Family members’ awareness of child abuse and neglect and to promote the healthy development of children. Community agencies, both on and off the installation, will partner with FAP to celebrate and honor the true heroes – Military Children. There will be lots of fun activities for children and information tables to gather additional resources the community has to offer. Admission is free of charge, and registration is not required. T-shirts will be given out on a first-come, first-serve basis. Free water will be provided and food trucks will be on-site.

SOARING HIGH IN GYMNASTICS BY SHALYNN CORTEZ SKIESUNLIMITED

Have you ever wondered what SKIESUnlimited Gymnastics has to offer? Here at SKIES, we offer recreational gymnastics and competitive gymnastics for boys and girls. What is the difference between these two programs? Well, recreational gymnastics is non-competitive and anyone can join, whereas competitive gymnastics is by invitation only, after the coach conducts an evaluation. All SKIES gymnastics programs follow the same curriculum and skill progression; the competitive gymnastics team starts at level three. If your child loves gymnastics and has the drive to continue after completing level two, they can be evaluated. The evaluation is determined by the mastery of skills learned in levels one and two, to include back bend, vault on three mats and more. page 38

We look for strength, determination, flexibility, motivation, sportsmanship and mental toughness in our future team members. As this is a demanding sports discipline, we expect commitment and a good attitude. The team trains three days a week for a total of six hours. There’s a monthly price difference between the two programs; if your child wants to participate for recreation, it’s $40 for level one and $45 for level two. To participate at the competitive level three and above, it is $100. The competitive gymnastics program can help prepare the student for college gymnastics, elite levels and the possibility of the Olympics one day. Our competitive team starts their competition season in the fall and competes in four events throughout November and December. The first being, our in-house meet, the SKIES

Star Mountain Classic in October. The girls then enjoy traveling to meets throughout Texas and New Mexico. The farthest travel meet is six hours from Fort Bliss. Competitions create a great opportunity for gymnasts to advance their skills and build camaraderie with their team. Level three team members must score a 34 overall in competition, in order to progress. They compete on four apparatus including Bars, Beam, Floor and Vault. Each apparatus has a value of 10 points. During the off season, gymnasts have the opportunity to work on the next level of skill sets for the new season. For more information about competitive gymnastics or any other program, visit SKIESUnlimited at 131A Doniphan Road or call 915568-5544. www.bliss.armymwr.com

COLLECTING COMBAT BOOTS Supporting Run for the Fallen BY HELEN BARRIENTES FAMILY AND MWR SURVIVOR OUTREACH SERVICES

The fifth annual Run for the Fallen 5K at Fort Bliss will be taking place April 13. Every year Soldiers, Families and civilians are invited to gather at the Field of Honor to listen as the names of the Fort Bliss and local El Paso Fallen Soldiers – who have paid the ultimate sacrifice – are read aloud from Survivor Families. After the ceremony, you can run, walk or stroll through the one-mile or 5K run. During the previous four years, the streets have been lined with mile markers handmade by survivors, each one representing the life of the fallen service member. This year, we will be adding a pair of combat boots that will contain a photograph and message that the family and/or friends have written along with an American and Gold Star Flag. The Fort Bliss Survivor Outreach Services office will be collecting combat boots from now until Feb. 18 to be used and decorated by our Surviving Families for the next Run for the Fallen and we need your help collecting them. We are encouraging everyone to dig into their closets and bags and pull out any of their military combat boots and donate them. Survivor Outreach Services is located at Building 241 Sheridan Road, open Monday through Friday 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. There will be a donation box set up on the front porch for anyone who wants to drop boots off after hours. We are also encouraging the units on Fort Bliss to get involved by collecting and decorating boots representing their Fallen Soldiers. We also have mile marker signs available for units to make, to honor the Fallen Soldiers from within their unit. If you have any questions, call the Survivor Outreach Services office at 915-568-2672.

WHAT DO YOU DO WITH YOUR W-2? TAKE THEM TO THE FORT BLISS TAX CENTER BY FORT BLISS TAX CENTER

Soldiers can normally expect to receive their W-2 by the third week in January. Once the W-2 arrives they are free to file their taxes at any one of the many tax preparers across the city and online. However, be aware of who you use as a tax preparer. Do-it-yourself programs, like TurboTax, may let you file a federal return for free. However, if you have a mortgage or you’ve sold stocks, you may be required to use a premium version that costs money. If you are a resident of a state that has state income tax, the online programs will usually charge you a fee to file state returns as well. Tax preparers near or on Fort Bliss will try to get business from Soldiers. They may have high preparation fees and may tempt clients with a refund anticipation loan, which look eerily similar to payday loans. These loans can come in a form of a debit card, check or direct deposit. The high fees and short term loan typically mean a client is charged an Annual Percentage Rate (APR) of more than 250%. The Fort Bliss Tax Center is completely free for service members, retirees and their dependents. All of our tax preparers are specifically trained to spot frequent military

tax issues. This includes Permanent Change of Station (PCS) move reimbursement, uniform/equipment costs, and homeowner/landlord deductions. In addition to being finely tuned to military issues, the Fort Bliss Tax Center’s certified preparers are all either Soldiers or volunteers. They do not charge any fees for the specialized tax consultation or filing. They truly have the client’s best interest in mind. If a refund is needed quickly, an Army Emergency Loan can be recommended, which is completely interest free. Last year, the Fort Bliss Tax Center helped file more than 4,500 tax returns. Saving over $1.4 million in preparer fees and infusing more than $9 million in tax refunds into the community. When W-2s are issued, bring yours to the tax center and have peace of mind that your taxes will be prepared professionally, ethically and efficiently. There will be an opening ceremony for the Fort Bliss Tax Center Jan. 22, starting at 10 a.m. at Bldg. 2910 Cassidy Road, next to the Stout Physical Fitness Center track. For volunteer opportunities or tax appointments, call 520-971-2415.

Searching made easy BY DENISE CAROTHERS FAMILY AND MWR EMPLOYMENT READINESS

It’s that time again, you and your family have orders for a permanent change of station (PCS). You have to start making arrangements for your new home at Fort Bliss. If you’re a working spouse it can be difficult to search for a new job at a new location. Here at Fort Bliss, Army Community Service (ACS) has the right option for you, the Employment Readiness Program (ERP). El Paso is a large city and it can be intimidating when you are not familiar with the area. To help ease this frustration, ERP coordinates two hiring fairs each year that bring the employers to Fort Bliss. In order for an employer to participate in the hiring fair, they must have actual vacancies to fill. The next hiring fair is scheduled for Feb. 7 at the Centennial Banquet and Conference Center, located at 11199 Sgt. E. Churchill Street on Central Fort Bliss. This event is free for Active Duty, Family Members, Retirees and DOD ID cardholders. All attendees must show a DOD ID at the door. In addition to coordinating hiring fairs, ERP offers resources to help with your career plan and job search. Whether you are a military spouse, Family member, retiree, DOD @blissmwr

civilian, active duty, active Reserve, National Guard or Wounded Warrior, ERP is here to help. ERP can assist by providing the following services; Civilian and Federal résumé writing assistance, one-on-one career counseling, job referrals, mock interview rehearsal and information about local job fairs. We also offer several workshops such as, Ten Steps to a Federal Job, Ace Your Next Job Interview and Social Media and Your Job Search. For more information about scheduling an appointment for Employment Orientation, call 915569-5838. The orientation is held at 10 a.m., every Wednesday at the ACS Building, located at 2494 Ricker Road. After you attend orientation, you will be scheduled for a oneon-one appointment with a highly qualified and trained Employment Readiness Specialist.

Tips for the Hiring Fair

Be Prepared: Arrive early and have a positive attitude. ERP will have a list of registered employers online at facebook.com/blissmwr or bliss.armymwr.com two weeks prior to the fair. Try to secure the list of the registered employers and visit

the employer’s website to see what positions are open, and apply to any you may be interested in. Create a 30 second commercial to introduce yourself. Include some of your qualifications that help demonstrate why you are the best candidate. Make sure you bring plenty of copies of your résumé. Prepare some questions for the recruiters, this shows an interest in the company and will help you make a great impression. Ask for the recruiter’s business card, this will help you when it is time to follow-up with the employers that you spoke with at the hiring fair. Dress for success: Ensure your clothes are comfortable and professional. The employer may want to interview you on the spot, so you want to be ready. Be Independent: Show the recruiters you are a confident candidate when visiting each table by yourself. By displaying confidence and independence, employers will see you can handle a job on your own without supervision. Remember, don’t feel like you have to look for employment on your own. The Employment Readiness Program is here to help you! JAN | FEB | MAR

Goals for the New Year BY MARION WALKER

PERSONAL FINANCIAL READINESS SPECIALIST

As we enter 2019, setting new financial goals can increase the success of achieving them. Reducing debt and building wealth requires a plan to make your financial resolutions stick. Assessing 2018 spending habits and addressing areas where you’ve overspent will assist you in developing your financial goals. Revamping your budget, knowing your financial priorities and acknowledging your weaknesses will assist you to make better financial choices. Remember, only you can change your financial state and spending habits. Setting new short- and longterm financial goals will address all aspects of your finances. It may seem

to be a tedious process to track your spending, set limits and write down every penny you spend; but it will help you be more aware of where and how your money is spent. Achieving financial stability while adhering to your budget will reduce debt and add to your emergency savings. Consider milestones throughout the year, such as birthdays, vacations and holidays, this helps break your big goal into small goals.
