FROM THE DIRECTOR

COMMANDING GENERAL Maj. Gen. Sean B. MacFarland

Summer is a season full of transition and new adventures for many military families. With school out for the summer and families relocating to the area, many wonder what they will do to keep entertained. Well not to worry because Family and MWR and our partners in the Fort Bliss and El Paso community are serving up some great opportunities. Children can be enlighted with the summer reading program at Mickelsen Library or enroll in some of the many wonderful classes at SKIES. Keep cool at one of our outdoor aquatic facilities, but first take a few swim lessons offered for both children and adults. Entertainment is headed your way: Our fourth year of Pop Goes the Fort on July Fourth featuring the El Paso Symphony Orchestra and the 1st Armored Division Band is an exciting night for the entire family culminating in the fireworks display. The Soldier Show is always a treat and returns to Fort Bliss this year at the Stayton Theater. The community of Fort Bliss and El Paso is vibrant with activities that span all ages and requirements. ABOUT THE COVER Please get out and explore, participate, and enhance yourself this summer season.

MWRCALENDAR

AN GERMAN/AMERIC NIGHT RUN The 21st Annual German American Night Run is set for September 13 at Freedom Crossing. Sponsored by the German Air Force Air Defense Center and Fort Bliss Family and MWR, the run signifies the valued relationship between Fort Bliss and the German community. Over 1,000 participants are expected in the year’s run to include corporate/military teams. You don’t have to be a runner to enjoy the event; 400-500 walkers, children on bikes, scooters, rollerblades and even those in strollers can partake in the event. The run is open to the public. Pre-race activities start at 4 p.m. and include the sale of German coffee and pastries, along with soft drinks, snow cones and more. Children’s activities include a bounce house, games and the Freedom Crossing play areas. The run starts at 6 p.m. and features an 8-kilometer race and 5-kilometer fun run/walk. The top three male and female finishers will win prizes. Stick around to enjoy German bratwurst, beer and more entertainment after the race. The 1st Armored Division Band and the T h e Tubameisters will provide live music to add an authentic touch to the festivities. For more information, visit ganightrun.com or blissmwr.com, or call (915) 568-0259 or (915) 744-5794. www.blissmwr.com

Oktoberfest has been a part of Fort Bliss tradition for over 41 years, however, with the reduction in the German Air Force it seemed as though Oktoberfest would be a thing of the past. That was until Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) stepped up to the plate and decided to keep the beer flowing. This year’s event is going to be held from September 19 through 21 at Biggs Park. MWR intends to keep the event as authentic as possible but there will be changes. Some of the changes were born out of n e c e s s i t y. Our German counterparts had many logistical advantages when it came to acquiring products from Eu-

rope. There are also different rules and regulations governing alcohol sales and consumption that MWR is required to follow. However, none of these stumbling blocks has deterred MWR from the mission of continuing the time-honored tradition of Oktoberfest here at Fort Bliss. Tickets will go on sale on August 1 at both MWR ITR locations. The ticket price is $30 per person which covers your authentic German meal and a beer stein (beer not It’s that time of included). year again, so dust There will be 2,500 off your dirndl and t i c k e t s drag out your available lederhosen... for Friday night and 2,500 available for Saturday night. MARY DUNCAN-BELL

Meredith McLean, Family and MWR Marketing Louisiana native, Mary Duncan-Bell, Army Emergency Relief (AER) Specialist is truly an employee who deserves to be recognized for her hard work and dedication to Family and MWR. “Mary is someone at ACS who we can really count on” says Ana Hernandez, AER Officer. “She works hard every day and is always willing to help others out.” One of Mary’s many roles is that of the AER Campaign project coordinator. The AER Campaign lasts from January to May and her tireless work during that time helps the AER team in its effort to assist Soldiers with their financial needs. She handles briefings along with behind the scenes work to ensure that AER can raise the funds it needs to provide Soldiers with assistance. “My greatest asset is my ability to multi task” said Duncan-Bell. On top of her many work responsibilities; Mary is also very busy outside of the office. She is the mother of five children ranging in age from 20 years old to 2 years old. “Being a mother has given me a lot of practice with multi tasking and the ability to wear many hats” she says. Mary has been working for Family and MWR on Fort Bliss for 6.5 years. Her favorite part of her job is being able to help Soldiers by counseling them on loans and other financial matters. When she is not working for ACS in her Army Emergency Relief role, you will find her crunching numbers and helping to sort out the ACS employee time cards. This multi-person job can be very difficult with over 40 employees to keep track of, but she is happy to take on the challenge. Keep an eye out for this wonderful employee and all that she does for Family and MWR. She definitely deserves some time in the spotlight. 18 | SUMMER 2014

Meredith McLean, Family and MWR Marketing Fort Bliss Family and MWR would like to shine the spotlight on one of our highly dedicated partners – Cindy Tovar of Mary Kay Cosmetics. Cindy has been proudly supporting Soldiers and their families for many years and has gone above and beyond many times to help Family and MWR out in a pinch. Over the years she has supported events small and large, from AFTB Basket Bingo and Mega Bingo to Military Spouse Appreciation Day and Bienvenidos a Bliss Relocation Fair. It is through this dedicated support that Family and MWR can continue to provide lasting memories to our patrons. “It’s a great feeling to know that I can help make a difference in the lives of those who give this country so much” says Cindy Tovar, Mary Kay Representative. “I really enjoy making connections and being able to help Soldiers and families get the most out of living in the area.” This year she has generously given to Wine Down Wednesday and Martini and a Manicure. You are sure to see her at many upcoming events and when you do, stop by her table and let her know how much you appreciate her many years of support.

SMOOTH MOVES Relocation is part of Army life. One of the things you can count on is that at some point you will relocate to a different installation, but you won’t have to do it alone. The Army helps move military families from one assignment to another and offers several different ways to assist in the transition. There is always a bit of excitement and anticipation each time your family relocates to a new duty station. Sure you might miss the friends you’ve made, but each move offers a new adventure. Whether this is your first move, or one of many, relocating your family can be overwhelming. Once you have your Permanent Change of Station (PCS) orders in hand, and after the panic subsides, you know you’ll need to get yourself and your family organized for the relocation process. As part of the Army family, you have access to many services that can help you get organized, make smart financial decisions, understand your allowances and manage stress. But to make the best of a move, you have to plan ahead and be prepared. Relocation Assistance Program The RAP provides services to support soldiers and their families as they relocate. The RAP offers relocation counseling, pre-move and post-move briefings, newcomers’ orientations— which often include tours of the new installation— and overseas orientations. Fort Bliss Relocation Assistance Program (915) 569-4227 Army Family Team Building Program (AFTB) Changing from your local community to the Army community is a big and important step. AFTB is a family training and readiness program that will help you understand Army culture and give you the skills and resources you need to become a self-reliant, selfsufficient member of the military community. AFTB will help you adapt to Army life, manage change, embrace challenges and inform you of benefits and services available to you in your new home. Fort Bliss Army Family Team Building (915) 569-4227 22 | SUMMER 2014

Get organized. There is a lot of paperwork that goes into a move. You will need multiple copies of your orders. Medical record for you and your pets may also come in handy. Offer to buy the movers lunch and if you tip beforehand, they will take extra care of your stuff. Renting sight-unseen is always a bad idea. Use colored duct tape to mark boxes. This will make the unpacking process much easier when you get to your destination. There is a wealth of information to help with military moves on the internet. Do some research ahead of time to help you have a better understanding of what you’ll be experiencing. Don’t let the movers pack your coffee machine. You will want to take it with you, promise. The best source of information are other military families. Try to connect with families at your new installation. Lighten your load. Get rid of unecessary items and have a garage sale prior to the move. The extra cash will come in handy. This is the Army, expect the unexpected. Relocating your family is a big deal! There is so much and so many people involved that getting everything off without a hitch is near impossible. Not everything is going to go exactly as planned. The more you come to terms with this now, the less frustrated you’ll be when it happens. facebook.com/blissmwr

BOOTS ON THE GROUND

You’ve made it! Bienvenidos a Bliss. First order of business, relax and then attend the Relocation Fair to explore the many opportunities that await you at and around your new duty station.

RELOCATION FAIR

Candice Boston, Family and MWR Marketing The Bienvenidos a Bliss Relocation Fair is a newcomer’s information forum conducted by Army Community Service’s (ACS) Relocation Readiness Program. The 10th annual “Bienvenidos a Bliss” offers a Texas style welcome at the Centennial Banquet and Conference Center, 11199 Sgt. E Churchill St on East Bliss, on August 5 from 1-5 p.m. The fair is a great opportunity for Fort Bliss residents and newcomers to learn about area services and activities available to them. More than 200 new and returning vendors and commercial sponsors will provide information on a variety of topics regarding their services, such as financial counseling, volunteer and educational opportunities, leisure and recreational activities, job search assistance, and Child Youth and School Services. “This come and go event is designed to help newcomers get involved, experience and learn about the many opportunities that Fort Bliss and the surrounding areas have to offer,” said Cher Poehlein, Rewww.blissmwr.com

location Readiness Program manager for Army Community Service. “It’s a great way to better prepare families for life in El Paso.” To spice up the atmosphere, live performances from local entertainers will take place throughout the afternoon. You even have the chance to win great ‘swag’ as many businesses organize drawings and arrange giveaways. There will be plenty to keep the little ones occupied with everything from bounce houses to face painting, games and more. The event also includes a volunteer fair, which allows fresh faces to explore the volunteer opportunities available in the area, and entertainment including dancing, martial arts demonstrations and more. The Armed Services Blood Program will conduct a blood drive during Bienvenidos a Bliss, as well. All blood collected during the drive will directly benefit U.S. troops deployed downrange. To learn more about Bienvenidos a Bliss, or any Relocation Assistance Program activities, call ACS at (915) 568-4227.

TURN PASSION INTO PROFIT

Candice Boston, Family and MWR Marketing More often than not, a person who is engaged in a particular hobby is doing it out of pure pleasure derived from the activity. Making money is usually out of the equation. Though pursuing a hobby is fun, it can also be a financial drain. Now, what if you can turn your hobby into a source of extra income? For some hobbyists, it may sound counter-intuitive; perhaps, even defeats the purpose of doing the hobby. However, there’s nothing wrong with being compensated for doing something that you love. If you belong to the latter group, take advantage of the Wagon Trails Market and become a vendor. Located on the corner of Pershing and Pleasonton, the market at Old Fort Bliss Replica takes place every Friday from 4-6 p.m. April thru September; plenty

of time for you to profit from the things you are passionate about. “We’re excited about the possibilities of the Wagon Trails Market,” said Wanda Kienzle, Program Director at Old Fort Bliss Replica. “Our goal is to offer a wide range of goods for buyers while providing a venue that is beneficial for our vendors.” Vendors vary from week to week but mostly include locally grown produce, farm fresh eggs, breads, jams, salsas and other delicious prepared foods as well as crafts, jewelry, art, candles, soaps and professional services. Hobbies should always be something you thoroughly enjoy, bringing a quiet oasis to your hectic lifestyle. And, if this enjoyable pastime brings in a little income, you profit in more ways than one. If you are interested in becoming a vendor at Wagon Trails Market, call (915) 568-4518 or (915) 588-8482.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

For the hobbyist with a little more ambition, here is something to consider: markets are also fertile grounds for sprouting successful entrepreneurs. It’s tough to start your own business without a big bank account or financial backers, but opportunities such as these allow for growth and potential in starting a Home Based Business. Living in a transient military lifestyle where moving every two to four years is certain; a Home Based Business is an entrepreneurial venue for military spouses to earn extra income. The Wagons Trails Market is great way to get started and to meet people with like interests along the way. If you are interested in starting a Home Based Business, you must obtain a solicitation packet from the Fort Bliss Family and MWR Office located at 11 Pershing Road or call (915) 568-3724.

KEEP IT CLEAN

BOWLING BALL MAINTENANCE IS CRUCIAL

MWRFOOD&FUN

www.blissmwr.com

Make use of professional, inexpensive bowling ball maintenance at Pro Connection to keep your balls ready to roll. Candice Boston, Family and MWR Marketing From time to time, customers whose scores have slipped begin to wonder why the bowling ball that worked so well for them last season is no longer producing those big games. Let’s assume that you maintain a good practice regimen, your ball surfaces and layouts match the conditions you play on, and your mechanics are still relatively flawless. So, the question that begs to be answered is, ‘are you making sure that your bowling balls are properly cleaned and maintained?’ Once a bowling ball becomes saturated with lane conditioner, your ball reaction and hit usually suffers. When this happens, it’s time to visit Pro Connection for a tune-up. Ball manufacturers have recognized that ball surface maintenance is key to a consistent ball reaction, so every ball maker has also developed a complete line of cleaners and polishes to help the player maintain their own equipment. “Bowlers should clean their ball after every set, perform maintenance every 9-12 games and have it resurfaced once a year,” said Stedman Benitez, manager of Pro Connection at Desert Strike Lanes. “This is crucial to ensuring your reaction is predictable.” In today’s game, coverstock maintenance is top priority. The bowling ball track becomes worn with

many scratches, which will cause the ball to have an inconsistent roll. That bowling ball will lose the reaction and energy on impact with the pins. If you see your bowling ball is not giving you the reaction you used to get, it is time to resurface. Pro Connection has a useful device that makes ball cleaning much easier; the ball spinner. Benitez said that “rather than relying on good old fashioned elbow grease, the ball spinner rotates the ball at a high rate of speed which allows cleaners to do a much more effective job at removing surface dirt and lane oil.” There is no way to predict the life expectancy of a ball before it loses reaction potential. If you notice your ball reaction changing, it’s time to consult the professionals at Pro Connection on restoring your ball’s former reaction. Bowling balls are not designed to last forever; however, you can prolong the usage and optimize your scores by properly maintaining the bowling ball’s surface. Pro Shops would love to sell you a bowling ball every time your score starts to slip, but Pro Connection at Desert Strike Lanes will help you get your ball on the right path. Pro Connection is open Tuesday – Saturday for all of your equipment, maintenance and coaching needs. For more information, visit Benitez at 2949 Carter Road or call (915) 568-7974.

MWRFOOD&FUN

THE FOOD, THE VENUE AND YOU Candice Boston, Family and MWR Marketing The date is set for your big event and now you have the challenging task of finding a venue. With so many options in the Fort Bliss area, finding the perfect venue can make you feel a bit overwhelmed. The venue must be just right; being too small can create overcrowding while being too big will give a sense of emptiness and an under-attended, unsuccessful event. A great place to start your venue hunt is at the Centennial Banquet and Conference Center. The venue offers private and semi-private space in a classically designed, state-of-the-art facility. It’s the perfect location for any corporate, social, holiday or charitable event. There are a lot of things to consider ensuring everything goes smoothly. Whether it’s a cocktail reception, formal, client entertainment, employee appreciation, conference, or seasonal celebration, the Centennial has what you need to make your event a success. The facility offers a variety of spaces both inside and out. Knowing the number of people you expect will narrow down your options. If you have 15 attendees, then you will not want a huge ballroom. If you are expecting 500 people, then you definitely do not want to be on their patio. The venue is the most important decision you’ll make in the event planning process as it sets the tone for your entire event, but the most challenging part is the food. Great food and drink will stick in your guests’ minds and vice versa. Whether its hors d’oeuvre, a sit down meal or a drinks reception, ensure you have something available for everyone’s tastes. The catering services at the Centennial Banquet and Conference Center will not only provide you with a delicious menu, but will also set up the meal

28 | SUMMER 2014

area, serve guests efficiently and take care of any related faux pas. “We do not claim to be the biggest, fanciest or hippest catering service in the area” said Damien Donaldson, lead chef at the Centennial Banquet and Conference Center. “We simply have a passion to serve up freshly prepared food, tastefully presented with exceptional service. Our desire is to impress your guests and help you make your event memorable!” Once the catering staff has a good idea of the type of event you are planning, they can suggest the best menu to maximize options and minimize budget. Know what you can afford. This will allow you to make educated decisions on what is necessary and what is luxury. Budgeting for an event is hard unless you have a good idea of what expenses you will incur. This seems obvious enough, but the costs associated with event planning can come from a number of different places. Just when you think you have identified all of your expense categories, another one pops up to send you back to the drawing board. The staff at the Centennial is dedicated to getting you the most bang for your buck. More than just a venue, the Centennial will help set the stage for the

atmosphere you’re attempting to create to ensure your attendees enjoy themselves, as much as they will the music and the food. They have experience and plans in place to accommodate your desired style. Seating plans and a gallery of images are available from past events to ensure the format will match your expectations. Providing the best in fine dining and entertainment, the Centennial Banquet and Conference Center would like to host your next event. For more information, testimonials and photos, visit us online at www.blissmwr.com/centennial/, stop by 11199 Sgt. E Churchill St on East Bliss or call (915) 744-1711.

GOLFING TIPS Play your best golf in the summer heat

Candice Boston, Family and MWR Marketing Its summer time in the west Texas desert which mean as soon as you step outside, you feel like you’ve walked straight into a furnace. There’s nothing like setting foot on the golf course a little early to “beat the heat,” only to start sweating the second you pop your trunk to grab your clubs. Your enthusiasm is literally seeping out of every sweat gland in your body. “You never get use to the heat,” said Bobby Kaerwer, the Golf Professional at Underwood Golf Complex for 43 years. “No one gets used to it, so if you’re going to be hot, might as well be hot while doing something you enjoy.” There’s no doubt about it, summer time in the desert can be absolutely brutal, but all golfers know they’re going to have to battle the elements from time to time. If you plan

to play golf this summer, play smart and better prepare yourself by following some of these simple tips: 1.) Stay hydrated. Make sure you drink plenty of fluids before and during your round and try to avoid caffeine and alcohol. Unfortunately, those do not hydrate.

4.) Wear a hat. It’s no secret; shade is lacking around these parts. Wearing a hat will do wonders in keeping the sun off you and keeing you cool. It’s not just about avoiding sunburn, it’s about maintaining your energy level.

2.) Wear loose, light-colored clothing. The goal here is to keep the clothes breathable and not have it stick to you when you start to sweat. You’ll feel more comfortable, stay cooler and play better.

5.) Eat light, but eat nonetheless. Again, if we want to maintain your concentration and energy levels, starving yourself is not going to help. However, the last thing you want to do is eat a big meal before needing to walk around for several hours in the hot sun.

3.) Use sunblock. Much of the newer golf apparel has sunblock technology built in. In fact, some suggest wearing long sleeves on hot days - simply for the sunblocking properties of the clothes. On your skin that is exposed, use some type of sunscreen.

6.) Warm up fully, but lightly. You want to be prepared for your round, so hit balls on the range, but don’t overexert yourself. You’re going to drain your energy throughout the day. Don’t burn it all before you get to the first tee! Golfing in the dead heat

of summer is just part of the experience; as unavoidable as bogeys. The oppressive heat doesn’t mean that your golf game has to take a back seat. “We’re golfers,” said Kaerwer. “Just because we’re playing in 105-degree weather doesn’t mean we’re insane, we just love the game” If you’re smart and prepared, you can enjoy some great times on the course; the days may be hot, but your game will be even hotter. Underwood Golf Complex opens at 6:30 a.m. daily with tee times beginning at 6:50 a.m. Although mornings are popular to avoid the heat, don’t forget the twilight rates that now begin at noon. Underwood is located at 3200 Coe Ave. For more information or to request a tee time, visit us online at www. blissmwr.com/golf/ or call (915) 568-1059/3641.

Bobby Kaerwer is a humble family man that’s committed most of his adult life to Soldiers and their families through the game of golf. As the head Golf Professional at Underwood Golf Complex since 1969, he has seen Family and MWR and Fort Bliss transform and morph into the massive organization and installation that you see today. Through Bobby’s leadership and mentorship, Underwood has emerged as a first class facility that provides a relaxing, rehabilitative golf experience for Soldiers, their Families, Retirees and Civilians alike. We wanted to take a moment to celebrate this dedicated employee as he prepares to walk off the course, at the top of his game, for the last time this September. It is sometimes a rare thing in this constantly changing and sometimes nomadic existence to have someone commit their life to our organization. For this we thank and applaud Bobby Kaerwer for his 40+ years of service to our organization, the Unites States Army and all of us. You will be missed. 30 | SUMMER 2014

AND THE WINNER IS...

Michele Wiernicki, Family and MWR Marketing In May, Family and MWR began the search for a new name for the Fort Bliss Rod and Gun Club. The “Rename the Rod and Gun Club” contest concluded on May 31 with the submission of over one hundred names via ballot, email and face book. The names ranged from the humorous, ‘No Rod and Gun Club’ to the serious ‘Sergeant Victor H. Espinoza Gun Club’ to those that we cannot write in this publication. The term “Rod” refers to fishing and because we have very little water here in El Paso is became evident that we needed to remarket the facility and the first way was through its name and logo. Many factors were considered but the main intent was to rename the facility something that better encompassed the activities enjoyed there. In the end, it was put to the MWR and Fort Bliss leadership to decide.

Mr. Paul Millard submitted the Fort Bliss Bow and Gun Club entry and was the lucky recipient of a $200 Visa gift card. Not only does he walk away with a little extra pocket money but he gets the bragging rights as well. “We intend to improve the archery ranges and promote active participation”, said Jason Propheter, Fort Bliss Bow and Gun Club manager. Some of the more creative submissions included Bandidos and Soldiers, Trigger Fingers, Gunpowder and Lead and Southern Silver Bullet. A big thank you to all who participated and congratulations to Mr. Paul Millard. The Fort Bliss Bow and Gun Club is open to all DoD ID card holders and the general public. Annual memberships are available. For more information, call (915) 568-2983 or stop by 3730 Roy Johnson Lane in northeast El Paso.

MWRSPORTS FITNESS AQUATICS

STAY FIT BE ACTIVE PLAY SPORTS

Meredith McLean, Family and MWR Marketing As the temperatures rise and the summer sizzles on, it is full steam ahead for Fort Bliss Sports, Fitness and Aquatics as they round out the summer months with a diverse line-up of activities. Kicking off the calendar is the Commander’s Cup Golf Tournament from July 11-13. It is free and open to active-duty Soldiers only. Participants can compete in a four-person scramble team or individually in hopes of gaining Commander’s Cup points for their unit. A new challenge for competitors this season is Commander’s Cup Kickball. “After receiving many requests for kickball we added it to the schedule” says Holly Imbriaco, Group Fitness Director. “We are always looking to diversify our calendar and adding kickball just made sense.” Kickball will take place on July 19 and is open to teams of active-duty Soldiers. If you are looking for a break from the heat, look no further than the Team Aquathlon scheduled for July 25. This competition consists of a 5K run followed by a 400 meter swim and finishes with another 5K run. It is part of the Commander’s Cup series, but is also open to ID card holders age 18 and older. Another event that brings diversity to this quarter’s calendar is the Mini Golf Tournament on August 12-14. “It is important to have fun sports like these because it helps us engage people who may not be fond of sports on tradi-

tional intramural calendars” says Todd Smith, Varsity/Intramural Sports Coordinator. For all the heat lovers, 10-Miler in the Heat is a run that you won’t want to miss. It is set for August 16 and serves as the qualifier for the Army 10-Miler Team. This run is open to all runners, including the El Paso community. Early registration is available at active. com or at Soto PFC or Stout PFC. Late registration will be held the day of the race on site. Are you more of a team player? Commander’s Cup Flag Football begins play on August 18 and Commander’s Cup Indoor Soccer begins on August 25. Both are open to teams of active-duty soldiers. Open Fall Softball begins September 6 and is open to all ID card holders. On September 5, boxing enthusiasts have something to look forward to with the Border Rumble Boxing Smoker. Active-duty Soldiers are welcome to participate in this event, but must have less than five amateur bouts. If you are a runner, two events in September will interest you. On September 13 Fort Bliss Sports Fitness and Aquatics will be hosting the German American Night Run. This event is an 8K run or a 5K run/walk. The Iron Soldier Sprint Triathlon will take place later that month on September 27. To view the annual calendar, visit blissmwr.com/intramurals or check out the Fort Bliss Sports, Fitness and Aquatics Facebook page at facebook. com/teamblisssports. FORT BLISS SOLDIER

STRIKES GOLD Candice Boston, Family and MWR Marketing Fort Bliss took their ‘A’ game to the 2014 Armed Forces Bowling Championship and brought home the gold and lots of it! Sgt. Rose Brown, a military police officer assigned to 978th MP CO, 93rd MP BN, won top honors at this year’s Armed Forces Bowling Championships held at Joint Base LewisMcChord in Washington. Don Aguilar, Manager of Desert Strike Lanes and the All-Army Bowling Coach, helped lead the women’s team to victory taking the four-year crown from the USAF women. At this year’s competition, not only did Brown take the gold in mixed doubles, singles, regular team and all events singles, she dominated USAF Maj. Ron Hurt, the top male leader at the competition, in a one game, winner takes all, Grand Championship match. Brown is no stranger to the winner’s circle. She took home the same honors in 2013 and 2010 as the Women’s All Events Champion. Brown missed the competition in 2011

and 2012 when she deployed to Afghanistan where she worked with Afghan National Police and the brigade’s female engagement teams in Regional Command South. Aguilar’s motto, “DO WORK” clearly made an impression on the team because that is exactly what they did and they have 24 awards to prove it from this year alone. “He is ‘greatness,’ he expects ‘greatness’ from his team and they respond because of the ‘greatness of his leadership” states William Sewell, U.S. Army IMCOM G-9, AllArmy Sports. Even though the All Army Men’s Team took the bronze this year after a three-year winning streak, Aguilar is confident they will take it back next year. If you are interested in being on the All-Army Bowling Team, details on selection criteria and how to apply can be found at visit www.armymwr. com. Soldier-Athletes must apply to be selected for the AllArmy program. To apply, visit https://apps.imcom.army.mil/ apptracmain.

Candice Boston, Family and MWR Marketing This summer, many of us will flock to the pool for relief from the desert sun. The pool can be a place for many great memories, but it can also be a scary and dangerous place for those who do not know how to swim. A great way to increase your confidence while developing awareness of potential dangers is to take swimming lessons. One of the most important things you could ever do for a child in terms of their safety is to teach them how to swim. Whether the goal is safety, self-confidence, exercise, or fun, it is important to encourage water education in youth. The SKIESUnlimited program offers swim lessons to children as young as 3 at the Replica Aquatic Center. A variety of classes are offered year round where they can learn in a safe and positive environment. Instructors teach safety around the water, drowning prevention strategies, and enhance the progression of swimming ability. The second most important thing you could do is learn how to swim

yourself, if you don’t have this skill already. Whether you are learning to swim for the first time, or need to improve your technique, the adult-only swim lessons cater to swimmers of all levels from those wanting to learn the basics of survival to those wanting to focus on skill development. Adult swim lessons are offered at both the Aquatics Training Center and Replica Aquatic Center. Those who have had swim lessons gain respect for the water and the skills necessary to make them safer around the water. Learning to swim can be a very beneficial lesson in someone’s life. There are many times when the knowledge of how to swim will come in handy; it may even save your life someday. To get you on the path to becoming a Les Mills Instructor you first need to create an account in our Instructor Portal - this will allow you to book yourself into Les Mills’ initial training and get started on your journey to become a Les Mills instructor. Les Mills’ initial training workshops are designed to give you the

tools and techniques to create lifechanging fitness experiences in every class you teach. At the workshop you will receive the latest program release, program manuals, as well as hands-on time with a certified National Trainer who will give you instruction and feedback to guide your progress. After you’ve finished your initial training you’ll need to submit a video of you teaching your class. This is to ensure that you are creating a safe and effective workout environment for your participants, to keep up the quality of Les Mills instructors, and to make sure you are instructing to your full potential. Once your assessment is in and marked, you’ll be certified to teach your program if you’ve passed. The cost for the training is $290. Space is limited, register online today at http://www.lesmills.com/southcentral/events/events.aspx. For more information, call (915) 744-5794.

Candice Boston, Family and MWR Marketing Nowhere is the diversity and rich cultural heritage of Mexico more evident than in its folk dances. Called “Folklorico,” Mexican folk dancing is a carefully preserved tradition passed down from generation to generation. Like all folk dancing, traditional Mexican dances provide a glimpse into the culture of the region. With a stunning display of colors and upbeat musical accompaniment, it is one of the most stunning and culturally rich dance expressions of its kind. Recently, Mexican folkloric dance became something that could be enjoyed not only as a spectator, but as a participant. “For the love of art and culture,” army spouse Claudia Dorsey decided to volunteer her time and teach Mexican folklore dance to children thru the SKIESUnlimited program. Dorsey has been moving her whole life—as a dancer, that is. A native of Guadalajara Jal Mexico, she began dancing professionally at the age of four. Now, as the performing arts director at Milam SchoolAged Center, she pitched the idea to SKIESUnlimited Director Joy Clickner three years ago and she didn’t hesitate to agree. SKIESUnlimited began offering Folklorico classes three year with plenty of room for more students who want to learn to perform some

of Mexico’s traditional dances. With over 30 children currently participating in her programs, Dorsey says “she loves to see kids enjoying themselves especially with a skill that is disappearing in the Latin community.” Dorsey continues “this nation is a melting pot, even more so within a military community and nothing is more inspiring than seeing children embracing the culture around them.” Most recognizable for the lively display of colorful waving skirts, Mexican folk dance can be seen at nearly any celebration in this region of the country. “Our highest goal is to share with the world Mexican culture through dances, customs and traditions,” says Dorsey. As part of the class, students will also have the opportunity to take part in dance performances around the Fort Bliss and El Paso area. Classes are offered Tuesdays and Thursday at 5 p.m. every month at the Milam School-Aged Center, 1189 Haan Road. The cost for the class is $20 per month and is open to children 6-16 years of age. Class schedules are subject to change based on participation levels. Registration for SKIESUnlimited classes begins on the 20th of the month prior to class. Registration ends on the 7th of the month the student will attend. To register, visit blissmwr.com/skies/. ELMO IS BACK

Sesame Street and the USO are bringing the furry, fuzzy and friendly Muppets to Fort Bliss on September 4 & 5

www.blissmwr.com

Candice Boston, Family and MWR Marketing The Sesame Street/USO Experience for Military Families has kicked off its seven-month, stateside adventure. Elmo, Katie and their Sesame Street pals are scheduled to perform more than 200 shows at 69 military bases in 32 states by late October. Family and MWR and the USO are proud to welcome the tour to Fort Bliss this fall with one performance on September 4 at 6 p.m. and two performances on September 5 at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. All performances will take place at Stayton Theater. The Sesame Street/USO Experience for Military Families was created in 2008 to help service members and their families’ deal with the unique challenges they face, from deployments and homecomings to frequent relocations. “We couldn’t be more thrilled to have the Sesame Street gang and the USO back at the home of the 1st Armored Division for this show,” said Liz Bernal, the CYSS Administrator. “Our military Families have had as much instability as any military community, and while our kids are a resilient group, they still have insecurities that we need to

help them work through.” The tour features several of your favorite Sesame Street characters along with Katie, a military child who was created exclusively for this tour. She was first introduced to Military Families in April 2011 by First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden at a Joining Forces rally in Columbus, Ohio. This year’s tour will once again showcase the power of friendship, with Elmo and his Sesame Street pals helping Katie open up about her fears and excitement as she deals with moving to a new place and making new friends. Come sing and dance with Elmo and the rest of the Sesame Street gang as they learn to express their emotions. The show is free and open to active-duty Soldiers and their immediate Family members only. A military I.D. card will be required to pick up tickets. Tickets will be available at both ITR locations inside Freedom Crossing and the Soldier Activity Center and all CYSS facilities. For more information about Sesame Street/USO Experience, call (915) 569-7199 or visit www.uso.org/sesame/.

EDUCATION FAIR Sarrah Morgan, Family and MWR Marketing If you have school aged children you won’t want to miss this year’s Fort Bliss PreK-12 Education Fair. This year’s event is brought to you by the Child, Youth and School Services (CYSS) School Liaison Office. It will take place on Wednesday, July 30 from 8:30 a.m. 11:30 a.m., at the Centennial Club, 11199 Sgt. E. Churchill St. You can expect to meet and greet over 100 school entities from all the surrounding area school districts including Anthony, Canutillo, Clint, El Paso, Fabens, San Elizario, Socorro, Tornillo, and Ysleta as well as Gadsden, NM. El Paso Public School officials, private school representatives, charter school personnel, homeschool agencies, and parochial leaders will also be available to welcome new families and provide valuable informa-

tion regarding their educational opportunities. Fort Bliss CYSS will also be in attendance to answer questions regarding child care, before and after school programs, SKIESUnlimited, and youth sports, just to name a few. Army Community Service (ACS) will also have program representatives available. There is no registration fee and this event is open to all DoD ID card holders. “The PreK-12 Education Fair is a perfect way for military families to explore all the educational opportunities El Paso has to offer”, said Simone Hendricks of the School Liaison Office. “The fair allows parents to interact with school administrators; they will have the opportunity to meet with school principles and counselors, ask questions and get a better understanding of what programs their schools have to offer.”

said Hendricks. Each school district will have representatives available to give information pertaining to specialized programs at their facilities. For example, parents will have the ability to gather information on magnet programs or programs for gifted and talented students, as well as athletics, fine arts, special education, health services, early college services, guidance and counseling, and much more. In essence, the purpose of this fair is to make PreK-12 registration simple. Come out and see what activities interest you and your child and get the information before registration begins. It will make the whole back to school process fun and easy. For more information please call the School Liaison Office at (915) 569-5064, and/or visit our website at blissmwr.com.

SUCCESS STARTS HERE STRONG BEGINNINGS

EL PASO ISD

PRE-REGISTRATION Sarrah Morgan, Family and MWR Marketing Moving poses many challenges, but registering your children for school should not be one of them. The process of registering your newly arrived student in the El Paso Independent School District has been made a little easier thanks to the EPISD Pre-Registration for new families which will occur at participating campuses on Thursday, August 7, from 8:30-11:30 a.m and from 1-4:30 p.m.. The campuses participating in pre-registration are Bliss Elementary School, Hughey Elementary School, Logan Elementary School, Burnet Elementary School, Nixon Elementary School, Milam Elementary School, Powell Elementary School, Tom Lea Elementary School, Travis Elementary School, Bassett Middle School, Nolan Richardson Middle School, Ross Middle

School, Andress High School, Chapin High School, Burges High School, and Austin High School. Documents necessary for pre-registration are: birth certificate, current immunization records, school transcripts, proof of residency (utility bill or lease agreement), special education documents (if applicable), valid identification of the parent/guardian, social security card, and proof of income for those wishing to participate in the National Nutrition Program. Pre-registration is only available to military families who are new to EPISD. Students who are already registered with EPISD will have the opportunity to register during normal registration. For more information please call the School Liaison Office at (915) 569-5064, and/or visit our website at blissmwr.com.

Ann Ogle, Director of Replica CDC Army Child Youth and School Services has a special Pre-Kindergarten program referred to as Strong Beginnings. This all day program is an option for parents who want to prepare their child for Kindergarten, but work or go to school, and who can’t afford the opportunity to attend other similar programs. A child must be 4 years old by September 1st to be enrolled in the program, and, unlike public schools or other private preschools, Strong Beginnings operates between 5:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. This allows the military family to have the advantage of school preparatory instruction and care for the entire duty day. Instruction time is balanced with exciting and interesting activities. To enroll your child in the Strong Beginnings classroom most convenient to you, contact Parent Central at (915) 568-4374/4646 or visit our website at blissmwr. com.

MOVING INTO THE FUTURE

WITH ARMY FAMILY TEAM BUILDING Leba R. Hirsch, AFTB Program Manager Life and the Army are constantly changing and evolving. Army Family Team Building (AFTB) has answered recent calls of change with a little more of its own: a fantastic new curriculum update which brings the program more current with today’s technology and today’s Army. Your Fort Bliss AFTB began offering the updated curriculum in the summer of 2013 to a great response. The curriculum is still offered in three levels, but these levels reflect current conditions experienced by the military family. It is more relevant to the experience being faced by our service members, family members, and DOD Civilians. Our first level is Military Knowledge (sometimes known as “Army 101”). Students receive insight into the Army basics, such as acronyms, chain of command, benefits and entitlements. We also offer information about family preparedness, managing finances and military customs/ courtesies. Some might think that Military Knowledge is just for those new to the military lifestyle, but that truly isn’t the case. We often hear our more “seasoned” students say, “I’m so glad I finally found your program – you offer great information for me now, but I could have used this even more at the beginning of my military journey!” Personal Growth and Resiliency is our second level. We give our students much-

46 | SUMMER 2014

needed tools for their individual toolboxes; these help us all combat those day-today stressors that can pull us down. We include techniques to manage stress, improve personal relationships, and increase the ability to manage our personal time. We also focus on managing conflict more effectively, resiliency during crisis, and growing through change. Our final level focuses on Leadership Development to help prepare students for leadership opportunities they may face at home, at work, or even in a volunteer setting. We give our students the opportunity to examine their leadership styles and increase their understanding of team member needs. Information is also given to increase your skill in supporting others and serving as a positive role model through coaching/mentoring. Your Fort Bliss Army Family Team Building staff would be pleased to come out and brief our program at your next FRG meeting or event. AFTB modules are available for professional development, as well. We are available both during and after normal business hours, with two weeks’ notice given to accommodate your request. Training is provided at the Family Resilience Center, 250 Club Road, unless otherwise noted. We offer daytime, evening, and Saturday classes. To learn more about Army Family Team Building or to register for classes, visit us online at www. blissmwr.com/aftb or call (915) 569-5500.

Nancy Thomas-Mainor, Division Chief, Army Community Service The Fort Bliss Directorate of Family, and Morale, Welfare and Recreation, in partnership with Installation Management Command G9 Marketing Research and Analysis, will be launching the Army Community Service Needs Assessment Survey this Fall. The online survey will be available to the entire military community surrounding Fort Bliss. The Standardized ACS Needs Assessment Survey is being conducted as part of the local ACS accreditation process. The survey is intended to provide valuable information about ACS services, and other Family and MWR programs. The survey has been in paper format in the past, however, this year the survey will only be administered online. This survey is conducted every three years in coordination with the ACS Accreditation process, and provides a unique opportunity to measure usage and helpfulness of individual ACS programs and services, and identify emerging needs related to the Army way of life. The survey will allow people to express what programs and

Meredith McLean, Family and MWR Marketing Whether you are new to the area or are just searching for another job, look no further than Employment Readiness at Army Community Service. Employment Readiness has many different programs to help you on every level of your job search. They will help you take the steps necessary to become a highly desirable candidate and they also provide one-on-one assistance and classes to help their clients find the employment they are looking for. Start out with an orientation that will walk you through the different services that they provide. “Our orientation helps our clients discover all of the services that we have to offer” says Deana Garcia, ERP Specialist. “We aren’t a placement agency, but we do want to provide our clients with the tools that they need for a positive job search. Orientation takes place Wednesdays from 10 a.m. -11:30 a.m. Pre-registration for the orientation is required. The ERP also works with Work Force Solutions Upper Rio Grande to provide job matching and referral services. These services are provided to all interested participants after attending ERP orientation. Another service they provide is their resume building and reviewing service. Whether you need guidance in writing your resume or you would just like another person to proof it, they offer a whole range of options to best help you. “We encourage clients to stop in and utilize our resume services to ensure that their resume represents their skills and experiences” says Garcia. “Your resume is often times your first chance to sell yourself to a perspective employer and it is important to make sure you get it right the first time.” Dressing for success is something that ERP can help clients with, as well. ERP, in partnership with Workforce Solutions, offers Attire for Hire which is a program that allows registered clients to find a perfect outfit for job interviews or job fairs. The program accepts donations of gently used business casual clothing and gives out 1 outfit per client so their clients can make a great first impression. If you don’t find something that works in their office they can refer you to another Workforce Solutions office in El Paso. Every February and August, the ERP hosts a hiring fair for military dependents. The next Fort Bliss Hiring Fair will take place August 21 at the Centennial Banquet and Conference Center. “This is a great opportunity for those looking for a job” says Garcia. “The employers attending our hiring fair are required to have positions available that they are actively hiring for,” she continued. The Fort Bliss Hiring Fair is open to DoD ID card holders only. For more information on the services ERP has to offer or on the Fort Bliss Hiring Fair, visit blissmwr.com/erp or call (915) 569-5838. facebook.com/blissmwr
