VOLUME TWELVE | ISSUE THREE

ENHANCING OUR LIVES

BY FAMILY AND MWR MARKETING

FROM THE DIRECTOR

COMMANDING GENERAL Maj. Gen. Robert P. White

Happy summer to our Fort Bliss Family. This is a time that we are celebrating the growth of our patrons and staff. In this issue, expansion in the future programming, participation options and enhancement of our offerings will be emphasized. It is important to note that Family and MWR is affected in the same way as the rest of the Army in regards to funding. During this period we are looking at our programs and prioritizing those that historically have been garnering the most participation. We will also delve into some new arenas that are highlighted in this issue. We remain market driven and we keep the offering of high quality of life edicts at the forefront of everything we do. During this season please enjoy our Family and MWR programs, the great spirit of El Paso and stay hydrated. Thank you for allowing us to serve you; the best customers in the world. See you out there!

MWR YOUTH SERVICES

SUCCEEDING THROUGH CYS Natalie Hinojos

Family and MWR Marketing

It’s that time of year when many juniors and seniors in high school begin to question what they plan for the future ahead. “Where am I going to go to college? What should I major in? What do I want to do with my life?” Everyone goes through that period of time when these thoughts cross their minds. Whether it’s joining the military, attending college or traveling, it’s a decision they all have to make. For one successful military student, her hard work and determination has paid off as she moves beyond high school toward her ultimate goal in life. In May, Aolanis Jusino, a Chapin High School senior and long-time participant of MWR’s Child and Youth Services (CYS) program was granted a full athletic scholarship to the University of Puerto Rico. The scholarship will cover almost everything Aolanis will need to continue this journey including room and board, food, books and athletic gear.

Aolanis will be playing basketball and was also admitted to the University’s pre-medical program. She plans to be a podiatrist or orthopedic doctor. “I love to learn about the body system. My goal is to one day be able to help other athletes who suffer from foot injuries,” said Aolanis. In the 7th grade, Aolanis began playing

basketball competitively, “I experienced this opportunity with a team that was built at the youth center by military girls,” said Aolanis. “Where my coach was Rene Nava, CYS youth center director, who volunteered and dedicated his time and knowledge to teach me the skills I have

Lilia Lenhart, Qualified Recycling Program manager for the installation, sells our recycled materials to various buyers. This generates revenue that is used to fund many different Qualified Recycle Program projects. Money that is left over can be used for FMWR energy projects such as the Trading Post Playground, Spin Bikes at Stout PFC and the new Biggs Splash Pad coming next summer. “The more people who recycle, the more we are able to do quality of life projects like this that the entire installation can enjoy,” said Terri Smythe, project manager for the recycle program.

Second Annual

DOGGY SWIM DAY

Hi everyone, it’s me Milo, your favorite four-legged friend! I hope you all are ready for the dog days of summer because my friends at MWR have a lot of really cool events for you this time of year. One event I am really wagging my tail about is our second annual Doggy Swim Day, which will be Saturday, Sept. 17, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Community Pool. Last year this event

www.bliss.armymwr.com

was a total success and a great addition for my furry friends! We even had a costume contest, best trick contest and look-a-like contest. All of which will be going on again this year! Well-behaved vaccinated furry friends are welcome to come out and enjoy a day of fun in the El Paso sun! But remember, only doggies and pup parents are allowed in the pool. Kids have all summer to swim; this is our

day. The fee is $2 per dog, (humans are free) and proof of current vaccinations are required at registration. For a list of rules and what is required, make sure to visit the Bliss MWR website at bliss. armymwr.com. Just search Doggy Swim Day. I look forward to seeing all of my four-legged friends and their humans at my pawvorite event! Paws and Kisses,

MWR RECREATION

German American

NIGHT RUN

Anna Sutton

Family and MWR Marketing

Every year in September, the German Air Force Air Defense Center and Family and MWR put together a run that signifies the valued relationship between Fort Bliss and the German Community. The German American Night Run is also the official kickoff for the Oktoberfest season culminating in Oktoberfest weekend Sept. 23-25! It was 23 years ago that a young German Air Force Soldier by the name of Franz Huber walked into the MWR sports office to meet with, then Intramurals Coordinator, Eric Hildreth (now chief of Community Recreation) and, then Aquatics Manager, Bill Ketcherside (now chief of Planning Team, Special Events

and Community Liaison) to discuss bringing a night run to Fort Bliss. Huber wanted to raise money for MWR Family programming and various German Air Force charities, while serving German beer, bratwurst and entertainment. Hildreth and Ketcherside both agreed on the idea and said, “why not, let’s give it a shot.” This year’s 23rd annual German American Night Run is set for 6 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 10 at Freedom Crossing. More than 1,000 participants are expected to partake in the run which includes military and JROTC teams. It is open to the public and you do not have to be a runner to participate, walkers, children, bicycles, scooters,

rollerblades and even those in strollers can join the event. Pets are welcome as long as they are on a leash. This run is unique because it’s an evening run followed by delicious German food and imported German beer! Pre-race activities will start at 4 p.m. We’re very happy to announce that this year’s title sponsor will be Hyundai. There will be a Hyundai Service Event opportunity for people to get a free Vehicle Safety Inspection for any make or model. This is their way to show thanks to our military service personnel and their Families. There will also be some food

and drinks and free “goodies” like t-shirts, coloring books, chalk, water bottles and tote bags courtesy of Hyundai. The run will feature an 8K competitive race and a 5K fun run/walk. The top three male and female finishers will win prizes. Stick around after the race to enjoy the 1AD Band and all of the Oktoberfest festivities! Pre-registration is $25 and can be done through Sept. 7 at Soto, Milam and Stout Physical Fitness Centers and also online at raceroster.com. Participants can also register at Freedom Crossing from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. Sept. 5-9 and from 3 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. the day of the event. A $5 late fee will be incurred for registrations done the day of the event. Participants who are preregistered are guaranteed a performance t-shirt. For more information, call 915-744-5785. Runners go through the finish line during last year’s German American Night Run, Sept. 2015. Above picture: Participants pace themselves as they run down Sheridan Road.

If you have some cardboard, tape and a creative spirit maybe you have a chance to win at the 2nd annual Cardboard Regatta. This year’s event will begin at 1 p.m. Aug. 27 at the Aquatics Training Center. Start saving your boxes now and get out your drawing pad because last year the competitors were ready with boats of all sizes and designs. There were castaways riding on rafts, a floating Army tank and a boat full of dinosaurs to name a few. The creativity didn’t end with boat design either. Team names ranged from Bread Zeppelin and Shiver Me Timbers in the adult category to the Death Star, Jurassic World and The Nerds in the 1017 age category. There are a few rules that must be followed to prevent disqualification and the

minimum age is 10. Boats are required to have two riders, a captain and a first mate, and they must remain in the boat at all times. This was particularly difficult for some of our sailors last year. Prizes will be awarded for Biggest Shipwreck, Most Creative Vessel and Longest Voyage. We have teamed up again this year with our partners at the Fort Bliss Recycle Center to bring a highly competitive, creative, and fun event back to the waters of Fort Bliss. They will be saving cardboard beginning in July, for anyone interested in trying their hand at boat building and sailing. This is a free event but pre-registration is required and can be done online at bliss.armymwr.com, search: Cardboard Regatta. Information about approved materials and rules can also be viewed on our website. For more information, call 915-5697294. facebook.com/blissmwr

OUTDOOR REC offers summer

ACTIVITIES

Sarrah Morgan

Family and MWR Marketing

Don’t have any plans this summer? Want to get out and see what El Paso and surrounding areas have to offer? Then, head over to the Soldier Activity Center (SAC) and visit the Outdoor Recreation desk. This summer, Outdoor Recreation will be offering a variety of fun and exciting trips and activities. Whether you enjoy hiking, climbing, camping or tubing, Outdoor Rec has something for you! If you enjoy laser tag you will be happy to hear that we have two different sites for you to choose from. Biggs Park Laser Tag will give participants the opportunity to run around a portion of the park in the dark. There are numerous hiding areas to cover such as the trees, picnic benches, the volleyball courts and park equipment. If you are interested in an indoor area, head over to Soto Physical Fitness Center (PFC) Laser Tag. Soto PFC opens its doors so you can run around both floors of the gym. Participants are able to hide between

the workout equipment, stand on the second floor and aim for fellow players on the first floor. Whichever one you choose, we guarantee you will leave satisfied. If your inner dare devil wants to come out, make sure you take advantage of Tango Tower and Challenge Course. These two heart-stopping events give people the chance to test their fear of heights. Participants get the chance to climb the Tango Tower obstacle course, a 50 foot high, six sided structure with over 20 different elevated elements. This is not only a great Family event, but it makes for a fun team building activity as well. Challenge Course is held at the SAC and allows patrons to traverse the high ropes course. If you think you have what it takes to hang from the ceiling of a 35 foot building, this event is for you. Each of these events will get your adrenaline pumping and your blood flowing. Which one will you choose? Some of our most popular events also

BEHIND THE SCENES Natalie Hinojos FMWR Marketing

Behind the scenes will be a series of articles describing the fundamentals of Fort Bliss Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation (FMWR). Let’s go “Behind the Scenes” with the Special Events department, where amazing events begin with a small idea and build into a large-scale exciting, interactive event for Soldiers and their Families to appreciate throughout the year. Bill Ketcherside, chief of Special Events, Planning Team and Community Liaison for FMWR has built the department from the ground

up and continues to bring more events to Fort Bliss with the help of his team. “As the installation grew bigger over the last 10 years the need for post-wide activities grew. Bill took this new concept under his reign and invited me to come along for the ride,” said Lora Diem, community activities coordinator for post-wide Special Events. “As you can imagine it has been a bumpy and fun rollercoaster that has been worth every bit! I look forward to the next 10 years!” Ketcherside is the approving authority for special events and handles the business and official components of the operation. “Community Activities Coordinator, Lora Diem, is the mastermind behind most of the creativity and is assisted by Eddie Arriola, special events coordinator,” said Ketcherside. “As Community Liaison,

I facilitate communication between agencies in the El Paso Community and FMWR. The reasons for this are numerous, but at a minimum, it helps to foster good relationships, enables cross-marketing and promotions and, at times, helps leverage resources. The El Paso Community is a great supporter of Fort Bliss.” Special Events consists of just three people managing and developing huge, successful events at Fort Bliss. Events like Pop Goes the Fort and Rock the Fort gather attendance numbers in the 10,000-20,000 range. Quite a feat for such a small but dedicated team. They work 12-16 hour days to set up and execute an event and rely on teamwork from other FMWR facilities to help. “We are a very small core team of just three people and we heavily depend on all of our MWR teams from Marketing to help bounce ideas off of and to be boots on the ground all the way through sports, child care, catering, Biggs Park, basically all of our facilities to execute our

events,” said Diem. There are different stages the team goes through for an up-and-coming event: planning, preparation, set up and execution. Special Events also works behind the scenes with other FMWR departments, Units and Family Readiness Groups assisting with their events. “It could be logistical support providing stage equipment, sound systems, tents, tables, chairs, decorations/decorating and even the execution of the event itself,” said Ketcherside. “It’s not just within the FMWR departments but with the units and FRGs as well. We assist in the same manner with their events and activities within the parameters of prescribed guidelines. Mobilization and Deployment support, through Army Community Service, is also provided to those units leaving out or returning.” Diem and Arriola build activities, sets and props from scratch for almost every event. They recently created a table out of pallets to look like a beer keg with benches for the Freedom Crossing Earth Day event. This was their way of participating in the event but simultaneously advertising the

MWR Oktoberfest event coming in September. “My job is to work with Lora Diem to insure a successful event. We start out with the planning stage where we figure out what is needed to throw the event,” said Arriola. “Then we start preparing. We do many different things such as hauling trailers, generators, or even our stage. We set up sound systems, lights, stages and fog machines. We have to be creative sometimes and build different objects to bring to events (slinky stairs and the slimer hallway at Monster Bash). during any event that a child smiles or a Soldier laughs. We enjoy creating positive memories that they carry throughout their lives,” said Diem. It’s never a question of whether an event will happen but how do they make it happen. “The people make the job worth it, even before I started working for Special Events they treated me as if I was a member of the team. Banned Books Week Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read. This year “Banned Books Week” runs from Sept. 25 to Oct. 1; it will highlight the value of free and open access to information. “Banned Books Week” brings together the entire book community – librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers and readers of all types – in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those who some consider unorthodox or unpopular. By focusing on efforts across the country to remove or restrict access to books, “Banned Books Week” draws national attention to the harms of censorship. Check out the frequently challenged books display at the Fort Bliss libraries to explore the issues and controversies around book challenges and book banning. The Mickelsen Community Library will have a “caught reading banned books” mugshot back drop. Stop by and check out a banned book, snap a pic and support the freedom to read!

In 1848, Soldiers came to El Paso to help build the city and protect people who traveled on the wagon trains, and operated trade in the area. Old Fort Bliss Replica was built and donated by the city of El Paso in 1948, on the 100th year anniversary of the Fort that was established in the area. As the original museum on post, Old Fort Bliss Replica was not able to preserve the relics on display. When Old Ironsides Museum opened, it was able to maintain the artifacts in a controlled environment. Now Old Fort Bliss Replica is a children’s learning and cultural center, a hands-on living history facility. Wanda Kienzle, project manager of Children’s Education at Old Fort Bliss Replica, researches the history of the post and presents to school-aged children in the Las Cruces, El Paso, Ysleta and Socorro areas. “It isn’t all 1850s, but it has its roots there,” said Wanda. “I might teach a class in pottery, start at the beginning but then use an electric wheel. In its progression they learn the basics; appreciate and understand where things started.” Wanda has been working to bring new ideas and projects for people to engage at the facility. Her latest idea is renting out the venue for small groups for learning, entertainment and socializing events. The venue is more for the outwww.bliss.armymwr.com

door enthusiasts who like the rustic, western atmosphere the facility provides. When people rent the venue they are able to bring decorations, tables, entertainment and canopies for the party they plan to host. For food, catering options are

available such as, the Centennial Banquet and Conference Center or Pershing Pub. Food trucks are allowed on post for a fee, as long as they are approved by Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation (FMWR) and able to

operate on the installation. Outside activities may be discussed with Wanda; it is recommended to find a vendor who is familiar with Fort Bliss rules and regulations. Alcohol must be served by a FMWR facility that has a license to sell on the installation. Old Fort Bliss Replica receives most their furniture and décor by donations from the local area. It cannot provide tables and chairs for large groups, but customers are welcome to bring in their own. The venue can accommodate up to 200 people. The price starts at $75 to $200 depending on the use of the venue. “If someone is looking at it for what it is, and not thinking it’s a room at the Centennial or as nice as the Pershing Pub, it’s a different kind of place,” said Wanda. Customers can rent the facility throughout the year and Wanda will advise people on what time frame would be best to have an outside event. Some of the events held at the facility include changes of command, department meetings, informal weddings, camp fires, flag retirement ceremonies and more. If you are planning a wine tasting or having an organizational day and you’re trying to find a venue that is unique, memorable and full of history, Old Fort Bliss Replica is the place to be. The Army helps move the Families from one assignment to another and offers several different ways to assist in the transition. POST Natalie Hinojos

Family and MWR Marketing

Fort Bliss Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation has constantly strived to bring the most cutting edge facilities and technology to Soldiers and their Families. Even as many installations are suffering cutbacks and closures, we are continuing to grow and improve with renovations, expansions and brand-new facility openings in the upcoming years. One of our most exciting and anticipated grand openings will be the Mickelsen Library in its brand-new location in the old Stafford Dining Facility on Carrington Road. There is much to tell about the relocation of Mickelsen Library, one of the most utilized libraries in the Army. Just imagine how much more successful it will be by simply moving it above ground, adding new state of the art technology and a Java Express coffee bar! A new space means new opportunities for the library. There will be an increase in programming and special events, better access to the Internet and library databases through the addition of more computer stations, and plenty more room for their collection of books, audiovisual, and other library materials

to grow. “We are hoping to have a dedicated study space, something that we currently lack,” said Rachel Arizaga, Mickelsen librarian. “We are planning on having a meeting and conference room for public use. We also plan on providing additional computers, something which is very much needed to complete mandatory training for our Soldiers.” According to Arizaga, the Fort Bliss community can expect a library that supports the development of 21st century skills – digital literacy and citizenship, technology skills, information literacy, creativity, innovation – while continuing to support mission readiness. Mickelsen will have the opportunity to expand their current educational and recreational services as well as the chance to provide entirely new services for the Fort Bliss Community. The library will continue to offer children, teen and adult collection areas. Additionally, the MakerSpace, which is set to open this summer will move to the new location. The MakerSpace is a collaborative area that has a do-ityourself, hands-on arts and crafts, and technology area. “In terms of the coffee shop, I very much hope it is named ‘Biblio Bistro’ or ‘Books and Brews’— something to do with books and beverages,”

said Arizaga. “The particulars have not been discussed, but I think that given our patron-base things like ready-to-eat items – sandwiches, pizzas, burritos – would be very popular. Snack items like candy, nutritional bars and chips would appeal to everyone. Also, a variety of beverages like juice, tea and energy drinks would be great for those that spend a lot of time in the library.” But FMWR is not stopping there, next year patrons will see a newly designed Splash Pad at Biggs Park! No more pool, pool fees or lifeguards. “The water park we presently have at Biggs is old, it was built in the early ’90s. We want to update it and replace it with something more user/operator friendly,” said Eric Hildreth, chief of Community Recreation Division. “There’s a capacity we have to stay under for that area and only 100 people can come in at a time, we have far more than 100 people who want to utilize that facility. So we’ve come across some funding from our recycling program here at Fort Bliss and we’re going to remodel it from a Splash Park to a Splash Pad.” The area will be a more open and integrated part of Biggs Park; there will be no fence or specific capacity limit as before. The specific design is still being determined based on the budget, but for the most part it will be flattened

to zero depth, most of the wall – which is separating the Splash Park and Biggs Park – will be torn down. About 15 elements of interactive water features will make up the play area open for all ages, along with more shade availability around the area. “It’ll be a nice quiet place for parents to relax under the shade while the children run through the water elements,” said Hildreth. The estimated date for construction to begin is undetermined; however, the splash pad will be ready by summer 2017. The construction will not interfere with operating hours at the Splash Park this summer. Along with the redesign of the Splash Park, the RV Park and Rod and Gun Club will also be expanding their facilities and business. The Fort Bliss RV Park will extend their storage next to the Air Assault Obstacle Course in the summer 2017. Due to limited space at the current RV storage lot, it is only open to activeduty Soldiers. With the opening of the new lot, we will be able to support more of the RV Park’s customer base which is Military, Retirees, Civilians and DoD ID cardholders. The new lot will provide 400-500 additional parking spaces for all types of recreational vehicles. It will have a fence securing the perimeter with a security system and a 24-hour

coded access gate. The cost per parking space will be $30 monthly. Preliminary work is being done on the $2.75M expansion project for the Fort Bliss Rod and Gun Club. Construction is estimated to begin at the end of the fiscal year 2018. Nearly 5,000 square feet will be added allowing for a larger dining area, kitchen and Pro Shop. With a larger Pro Shop, they will be able to stock and sell more products such as archery equipment and supplies. An expanded kitchen and dining area will increase their ability to cater to larger groups and allow for a greater variety of menu items. Another phase of the expansion will include the relocation of the Biggs Paint Ball field to the Rod and Gun footprint.

Wait, there’s more! Another new FMWR facility will be coming in 2017, designed specifically for the younger Soldiers. The Warrior Zone will be one of the highlighted facilities for Single Soldiers and will be located on East Fort Bliss. This multi-program facility will have gaming, computer stations, internet surfing stations, two mini-bowling lanes, stand-alone gaming stations, a home theater, outside sand volleyball pits, grills and bar. We’re not done yet! An inside bar will be fully stocked with craft beer on tap and a restaurant will have pizza, gourmet burgers, some grab n’ go food items as well as healthy options.

CREATING ART: One Soldier at a time Family and MWR Framing Bliss

This fall, the Soldier Art Workshops (SAW) are expanding their current offerings in drawing, painting and encaustics to include workshops in hand-tossed clay, sculpture, scale modeling. They have also added several additional photography workshops for intermediate and advanced level students. SAW is also preparing to open classes in the fall for rock cutting/polishing and jewelry. The FMWR SAW program was developed in cooperation with the El Paso Art Association’s local artist volunteers and Military Veterans. Individual workshops are designed for artists with beginner to intermediate skill levels. 2016 EDUCATION FAIR AIMS TO PREPARE STUDENTS, PARENTS FOR NEW SCHOOL YEAR Simone Wendlandt-Hendricks FMWR School Liaison

Back-to-School Season is almost here! For new arriving military Families, this often brings concerns about what their new home has to offer in terms of their child’s education. The annual Fort Bliss PK-12 Education Fair for military Families aims to answer questions and provide the opportunity to get to know the El Paso education community. Hosted by Child, Youth and School Services (CYSS) – School Liaison Office (SLO), the event will be from 9 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 27, at the Centennial Banquet and Conference Center located at 11199 Sergeant E. Churchill on Central Fort Bliss. Military parents will have the opportunity to learn all about the schools in El Paso and southern New Mexico. This event allows parents to interact with staff members, meet administrators, ask questions and learn about different programs – all at one place. Each of the area’s 10 school districts

page 44

will have representatives on hand, who can provide information about magnet programs, special education, gifted and talented programs, transportation and much more. Private, parochial and charter schools, virtual academies and home schooling will also be represented along with community resources; which include Army Community Services, CYSS and more. More than 100 education entities will share valuable information on school choice, program availability and requirements within their school systems. The idea behind the fair is to ease PreKindergarten through 12th grade registration, provide information on the multitude of academic choices, and take the guess work out of “Back to School”. With one stop at the Education Fair, parents can get answers to all their educational questions and gather the information they need to make the best decisions for their children. After visiting the Education Fair, parents will have a better understanding of the different programs, registration requirements and will be better equipped

to get the enrollment process started. New students in the El Paso Independent School District (EPISD) can enjoy a head start on the enrollment process thanks to pre-registration offered at selected campuses. EPISD will open their doors to welcome new Families in an effort to ensure a smooth transition. Parents can start with the online registration and then complete the enrollment at their assigned campus during pre-registration. For Families that do not have access to the Internet or want some help completing the forms, the SLO will host registration workshops for parents. Documents needed for registration include; Birth certificate, current immunization records, school transcripts, proof of residency (utility bill or lease agreement), special education documents, if applicable, valid identification of the parent/guardian enrolling the student, Social Security card, and proof of income for those wishing to participate in the National Nutrition Program. For more information on all “Back-toSchool” events, dates and a list of participating campuses, visit bliss.armymwr. com or call the School Liaison Office at 915-569-5064.

For example, if a Family needs help navigating the application for respite care, or more information on a Medicaid waiver for in-home nursing, or wants to know more about special services JULY | AUG | SEPT

Blueprint of the Warrior Zone coming in summer 2017.

“I think the gaming is going to be one of the best features,” said Ron TellesFyffe, chief of the Business Operations Division of FMWR. “But overall the facility that offers multiple things to do for Soldiers, I think will be one of the best parts of it. If you want to watch movies you can rent movies, if you want to play pool or if you want to do a bit of bowling, there’s something for them.” The Warrior Zone will be located by 212th Fires Brigade in a dining facility that was built and never opened; instead of a new construction they only need to renovate the existing facility. “We are saving non-appropriated funds Soldier dollars by doing renovation instead of a full build,” said Telles-Fyffe. Renovation will begin in the fall of this year and it will be completed in the spring. This facility is targeted for Soldiers who are 18 and older, living in the barracks foot print, but it will be open to all military ID card holders. Rounding out this exciting news, is a

The Rod and Gun Club will be expanding their facility at the end of the fiscal year 2018. page 48

new hotel will be moving in right next to the Centennial Banquet and Conference Center. If you’re looking for a place to stay for the night after an event at the Centennial, look no further than right next door at Candlewood Suites. The estimated nine month construction is scheduled to begin later this year with an opening in 2017. There will be approximately 126 suites all with kitchenettes. When asked if the hotel would be a gain, Tabitha Bohn, business manager at the Centennial said, “Yes this will be a huge gain for us. Once built we could possibly draw in new conferences that like the idea of having the event in the hotel. I also believe that we will be able to entice new clients to move their business to the Centennial as we could possibly offer a package that would include rooms. This could also alleviate the worries of driving after a fun night out as it would be within walking distance.” Improving and expanding continues to be important for the leadership of Fort Bliss MWR, however, according to FMWR Director, Mark Cauthers, it is the people inside the infrastructure that make a difference in providing the best programming for our Soldiers and their Families. “We have been able to be creative and generate different sources of funding for needed facilities and programs; however; our main resource continues to be the dedicated team members of your Family and MWR organization. Even in times of fiscal challenges the MWR team at Fort Bliss strives to provide the best services and programs to our valued members of the community.” Big things are happening at Fort Bliss with an awesome team ready to deliver!

shooting fundamentals, disassembly and assembly and TX LTC application process. The course will have shooting drills to build skills to shoot effectively under time pressure. Student will practice the actual 50-round TX LTC Qualification Course. “Hands on training is the best way to learn and this class provided it, plus multiple TX LTC qualification attempts; we all showed improvement,” said Sgt. Russell See, Infantryman, 1-1AD, at Fort Bliss. The Rod and Gun Club offers the TX LTC Prep Course every month, usually the second Sunday, from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. with a 30-minute lunch break. Cost is $125 and requires pre-registration at the Pro Shop, with a $25 deposit to hold a seat in the course. Seating is limited to 12 students. If you do not have a gun, firearms rental packages are available to students for $10 plus ammunition costs. For more information about courses available at the Rod and Gun Club, call 915-568-2983.
