the brightest stars on Fort Bliss shine during Fort Bliss’ Got Talent, winner of the Army Festival of the Arts’ best variety entertainment production in 2010. Fort Bliss’ Got Talent is a four-week-long competition showcasing some of the installation’s best performers, every Thursday in February. At 6 p.m. each night on February 3, 10, 17 and 24, the Centennial Banquet and Conference Center, Bldg. 11199 on East Fort Bliss, will host fierce competition as our performers battle for the $500 grand prize. The contest is open to all active-duty, Reserve and Guard service members from any branch of service; retirees; dependents age 16 and older with valid military ID; and DoD civilians. Auditions will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, January 6 and Friday, January 7 at the Centennial. The audience is just as important as the talent in this competition; while each week’s performances will be evaluated by guest judges, the audience plays an integral role because their votes have the power to influence the outcome. Military units also have the chance to win: The unit with the most participation over all four weeks will win a $250 unit spirit award. CIRCLE AWARD

Winner’s Circle Employees go above and beyond

November 18, Family and MWR hosted the end-of-the-year Winner’s Circle ceremony. More than 200 people attended in an effort to recognize all our very deserving winners. Winner’s Circle is a directorate-level incentive awards program primarily designed to recognize outstanding customer service and teamwork by Family and MWR staff members. Each quarter, staff members are nominated by their peers, patrons of Family and MWR or outside agencies, or are identified by name in an ICE comment. Once a year, an individual who reflects greatness is selected by our director, Mark A. Cauthers. This year’s Director’s Award winner is Deborah Trexler from Child, Youth and School Services. As the Youth Education Support Services director, she is responsible in establishing the relationship between our schools, our youth, our parents and our installation. Debbie has more than

succeeded; she is part of the team that has created the standard Army-wide. We want to thank Debbie for continuously taking part in what we do every day – know that you do make a difference in the lives of Soldiers and their Families.

Let Family and MWR help you keep your New Year’s resolutions Heather Wilburn, Family and MWR Marketing

It happens every year: We make New Year’s resolutions. We make big plans, big lists, and big promises and then, somehow, life gets in the way and we’re back to where we started. Maybe you wanted to take a family vacation, but couldn’t find one to fit your budget. Maybe you want to get a better job, or save money, or volunteer to help others but didn’t know where to start. Perhaps you wanted to get in better shape, or lose weight, but couldn’t find a program that worked for you. All of these can cause us to abandon our New Year’s resolutions as we move through the year, but this year can be different when you enlist the services provided by Family and MWR. Hit the road Leisure Travel Services (ITR) is the premiere resource for those bitten by the travel bug. Whether you’re looking for a quick weekend getaway, a trip to a faraway destination or a cruise to the tropics, the friendly staff at Leisure Travel Services can find something suited to your taste – and budget. “The best thing to do is call us and make an appointment to come in and see us,” said Elvira Franco, Leisure Travel Services manager. “We’ll be happy to work within your budget to find the trip that’s right for you.” Leisure Travel Services offers cruises, theme park and attraction tickets, lodging and more, all at discounted rates. And when you book through Leisure Travel Services, you can make payments on your trips; it’s like vacation layaway, Franco said. To learn more, call Leisure Travel Services at (915) 568-7506. You can also find information on area attractions, ticket information and more at www. blissmwr.com/itr. cash in the bank If you’re looking to save money and reduce debt, the Financial Readiness Program at Army Community Service is the best place to begin. “I think the New Year is an opportunity for reflection

and for getting an idea of what you can do differently,” said Ana Hernandez, a financial readiness specialist with the program. “You can make small sets of changes that have a big impact as the year goes on.” The program’s four financial educators are ready to help you get on the right track, whether you’re a financial beginner who wants to learn how to budget and manage money or someone with a little more experience who’s looking at investing. Take advantage of weekly classes or make an appointment for one-on-one financial counseling. To take advantage of the Financial Readiness Program, learn more at www.blissmwr. com/frp or call ACS at (915) 568-1132. learn something new There are several ways to accomplish this resolution, but Outdoor Recreation might provide the path that’s most exciting. Explore climbing, camping, biking and more, no matter what your skill or experience level might be. “Our adventures are a great way to get acquainted with a new activity,” said Kenny Coppedge, Family and MWR’s outdoor recreation specialist. “When you come with us, you’re getting a guided adventure with experienced staff. We can tailor our trips to suit the needs of all of our participants, from the most novice to the most experienced, and still make sure everyone has a great time. It’s a safe way to try a new activity.” For more information on upcoming Outdoor Recreation activities, visit blissmwr. com or call (915) 433-9666. selfless service Another popular resolution is to help the less fortunate through volunteering. If you’d love to help but don’t know where to start, get in touch with the Fort Bliss Army Volunteer Corps. “When you do make a resolution to help people, you often benefit yourself,” said Tephanie Hopper, Army Volunteer Corps coordinator. “Volunteering is rewarding to the organization you’re serving, but it often turns out to be more rewarding for you. “I always recommend that people see volunteering as a two-fold opportunity,” Hopper continued. “It’s a benefit to the underprivileged, but it’s a benefit to you as well. If you need help getting started, call us. We at the Army Volunteer Corps office are readily available to help you help others.”

There’s no better time to get involved: On Fort Bliss, 2011 has been designated the “Year of Volunteering,” and the Army Volunteer Corps’ “Resolve to Serve” campaign is in full swing. For more information, call the Army Volunteer Corps office at (915) 568-1132 or visit www.blissmwr.com/volunteer. get in shape Looking to get in shape or lose weight? From group exercise classes to personal trainers, the Family and MWR Sports and Fitness team has you covered. Spin classes and Zumba make sweating fun. Weight rooms, cardio equipment and more at six facilities mean a good workout is never far away. If you’re looking to assess your current fitness level and set new goals, check out the Microfit fitness assessment program. To learn more, stop by any of the gyms, or visit www.blissmwr.com. Climbing the career ladder If your New Year’s resolution was to find a better job, the first thing to do is take inventory of your job-search tools. “Organize all your paperwork – get your resume ready, and organize your transcripts, orders and letters of recommendation – and start the year with a positive attitude and a smile,” said Vanessa Carmichael, a program assistant with the Employment Readiness Program at ACS. The new year also provides a great opportunity to look at what industries have seen gains in employment over the past year. “Look at the market and see what industries are hot,” Carmichael said. “If you have the skills, apply, apply, apply! If not, go back to school and update your skills.” The staff at ERP can help you with job postings, career coaching, small and homebased business counseling and more. “At ERP, we are more than job seekers; we are career counselors. We will assess you and point you in the right direction, letting you know what the employers are seeking, what skills you need to develop and what financial and educational resources are available to you,” Carmichael said. Workshops addressing resume writing, career networking, federal employment and more can put you on an upwardly mobile trajectory. For more information, visit www.blissmwr.com/erp or call ACS at (915) 568-1132.

The Centennial breathes new life into an Army tradition Heather Wilburn, Family and MWR Marketing

You don’t need a passport to taste the world – just stop by the Centennial Banquet and Conference Center every Wednesday night for the new Beef and Burgundy. “Beef and Burgundy is an Army tradition, but that doesn’t mean it has to be boring. We wanted to revamp the program and make it appeal to a wider audience,” said Nolan Higdem, business manager at the Centennial. “We wanted to bring Beef and Burgundy to a new generation of the Army.” Higdem worked with the Centennial’s Chef Stephen Forsyth to create a new, exciting menu of four rotating theme nights that offer something for everyone. Check out Italian night, featuring chicken parmesan, a pasta bar with three sauce options and garlic bread, or enjoy schnitzel, bratwurst and sauerkraut, and mashed potatoes and gravy on German night. Salmon, crab cakes and linguini with clam sauce will round out the menu for seafood night, and Cajun night brings

diners a taste of the south with gumbo, jambalaya, and red beans and rice. All meals include a salad bar and dessert station, along with complimentary wine ... and it all costs just $13.95 for adults. Pay half price for children ages 7-11; children ages 6 and under eat free. Every night features live entertainment and dancing. In January, B&B offers a special draw: An instructor from the El Paso Ballroom Dance Academy will be on hand at the Centennial to provide free dance lessons during Beef and Burgundy dinners. “Beef and Burgundy is an amazing value,” Higdem added. “Nowhere else in El Paso can you get dinner with wine, dancing and live entertainment for this price. You can’t beat it.” The new Beef and Burgundy menus launch Wednesday, January 5 with the German menu. Italian night follows on January 12, and Cajun night will be January 19. Seafood night will debut January 26. To make reservations, or for more information, call (915) 562-5969.

Improve your short game to improve your score

Bobby Kaerwer, Underwood Golf Complex

While playing the game of golf, you play par 3, par 4 and par 5 holes. On the par 3s you are supposed to be on the green in one stroke, and two strokes are set aside for putting. On the Par 4 holes you are supposed to be on the green in two strokes, and two strokes are set aside for putting. On the par 5 holes you are supposed to be on the green in three strokes, and two strokes are set aside for putting. If you take two putts on every hole of an 18 hole golf course, that adds up to 36 strokes. Most courses have 72 as par for 18 holes. What is half of 72? Answer: 36. Half the strokes in a round of golf are set aside for putting. Are you a good putter? You better be if you expect your score to come down. If you tell yourself you are a bad putter, you will be a bad putter. Your goal in putting is to knock the ball in the hole in one and take no more than two strokes on every green. This goal can be reached provided you spend time practicing your putting.

Kaerwer is the head golf professional and manager of Gen. George V. Underwood Jr. Golf Complex. In 2010, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Sun Country Section of the PGA of America.

Use imagery to improve performance on the lanes

Don Diego Aguilar II, USBC Silver Certified Coach

Imagery in sports is often overlooked and underutilized. When we think of the top athletes in the world or those who are at the top of their game, we often hear them use terms such as “the zone,” “slow motion” or “second nature.” Have you ever given any thought to what you hear or what you see while bowling? Bowling is seen as two sports in one: the recreational sport and the competitive performance sport. Performance enhancement imagery, when used daily prior to competition periods, should be rehearsed and performed mentally. The periods before competition should have an increased time of rehearsal to train the athlete to make all motions of the game second nature. The imagery serves to improve an individual’s focus of attention for both competition and recreation. Imagery will contribute a positive increase in performance readiness and positive thinking. Just in case you missed the ribbon cutting and the RV Park’s big reveal, here’s your chance to read about it and make your reservations! The December 1 ribbon-cutting ceremony was the highlight for many. The expansion of the RV Park was much in demand. Sixty camping lots were added, along with a new bathhouse and laundry area, a dog-walking area and a new storage lot. Lay to rest any security concerns you may have; new cameras were also installed. Retirees, if you’re traveling and need a full-service rest stop, this RV Park will suit your “time-for-a-break” rest area needs during your travels. The park also provides temporary lodging for active-duty Soldiers who

are awaiting housing. If you’re attending the United States Army Sergeants Major Academy, this $3.5 million NAF project can accommodate. “We listened to the population and fulfilled the needs with the growth,” said Family and MWR Director Mark Cauthers. The park generates revenue which benefits all authorized Family and

MWR patrons through expanded programs, renovations and equipment replacement. “This is a long-awaited project that will benefit Soldiers and Families – directly and indirectly,” said Lindy Sorrell, chief of Family and MWR’s Community Recreation Division. “We look forward to hosting more patrons with a larger park.”

Learn to be a lifeguard and save the day

Get into the ‘fit’ of things!

“She’s a great motivator; she’s tough and you see results fast.”

Personal trainers make your workout work for you Darline Goyea, Family and MWR Marketing

We all know it’s that time of year; we make all sorts of promises to the “got to get fit” gods and by Valentine’s Day, it all becomes a blur. Well, this is your chance to get physically fit and stay fit. Trainers are ready to take on your challenge. Tracy Gilreath, a physical fitness trainer at Soto Physical Fitness Facility on East Fort Bliss, was a police officer for 15 years. Her husband re-enlisted in the military, and she could not go from agency to agency with a PCS move every two to three years. Gilreath wanted to remain active. “Training was the next logical step for me,” said Gilreath. “It keeps me in shape too.” Presently, Gilreath trains seven-10 clients a week. “She’s a great motivator; she’s tough and you see results fast,” said LaShawn Barnes, a military spouse

who trains with Gilreath twice a week. Gilreath also has a five to six person running group she trains for those who want to improve on their running. The runners group is a beginner’s class for running enthusiasts. Runners start off with no experience and progress to being able to run a 5k (which is approximately 3.1 miles) by the end of six weeks. And if runners are still interested, they can sign up at the intermediate level. Three times a week for an hour and a half, runners will be trained to run three-six miles at the end of eight weeks. There is someone right for you; male and female trainers are available at a time convenient for you. If you are serious and ready to give it your all this year, stop by any of the gyms on main post or East Fort Bliss to learn more about scheduling the services of a personal trainer.

CYSS Youth Sports helps kids stay healthy, happy Darline Goyea, Family and MWR Marketing

Maintaining physical fitness is not just a goal for adults. To the young adults who take part in Child, Youth and School Services’ Youth Sports and Fitness program, keeping fit and active is not only healthy, but fun too. The Health Fair in January will focus on mind, body and soul – this year YS is referring to it as “Triple Play.” This isn’t just another cliché for the teens, since Youth Sports and Fitness is sponsoring it. The CYSS Sports and Fitness team are devoted to empowering the children of the Fort Bliss community to make healthy, nutritional and physically fit decisions for themselves – and maybe even influence their Families. For more information on Youth Sports and Fitness, call (915) 5682617 or visit www.blissmwr.com/ youthsports.

New horizons

SKIES opens new gymnastic and dance center Darline Goyea, Family and MWR Marketing

Child ,Youth and School Services’ SKIESUnlimited is known for its fun-impacted programs and activities, but the Fort Bliss location recently acquired a location that has allowed them to double in space – which means classes can now double in size! The new facility, located in Bldg. 131, Doniphan Road, is a repurposed school-age center and comprises a gymnastics room, dance room and babysitting training room, along with training space for the CYSS staff. The gymnastics room is an almost 3,000-square-foot room with balance beams, bars and tumbling mats. “I’m very proud of this program because it represents Fort Bliss outside the Fort Bliss community,” said Joy Clickener, SKIES instructional program specialist. Due to space constraints, class sizes were kept to a minimum. Now, with this expansion, hopes are to increase the number of participants and provide more options to Families. For $35 a month, every Tuesday and Thursday, youngsters can take part at one of three levels of gymnastics, starting at age 6. “I’m most proud of the gymnastics program because I taught gymnastics for 15 years at different bases,” said Clickener. “Tumble Tots,” a younger version of gymnastics, is also available for 3- to 5-year-olds. Power tumbling for ages 7 and older (flooronly gymnastics) offers older kids

to improve on any previous skills. A “Tots Moms and Me” class provides oneon-one time with infants and toddlers (18 months to age 3) with parents who would like to get their children familiar with the beginning stages of gymnastics. The additional space allowed expansion of the dance and babysitting training rooms. CYSS trainings have

now found a home at the facility. For any participation in any SKIES classes or activities, registration with Fort Bliss Parent Central Services is required. For more information on gymnastic classes and other classes offered through SKIES, contact a representative at (915) 569-7732 or visit www.blissmwr.com/skies.

Calling all teens and in between. If you are looking for a place to hang out, let loose, and have fun, the Milam Youth Activity Center – located on East Bliss Haan Road – is the place to be. The MYAC features a variety of activities for everyone to enjoy ... if you are in sixth grade or older. Activities include Coffee House Night, where teens can get up on stage and sing, read poetry, and play musical instruments live. Parents, you are welcome to sit amongst the crowd and enjoy in-house coffee as well, but remember, this is for the teens. “I really want these kids to own this place,” said Susan Goss, MYAC director. The Cooking Club is run by Cee Cee Blount (Ms. Cee Cee, as she’s referred to by the teens), a child and youth program assistant who teaches teens – in the fully-equipped kitchen – how to cook and explore their culinary side. “I’ve been doing this for 20 years. I grew up military; my kids grew up military at the same center,” said Blount. Ms. Cee Cee also runs the TORCH and Keystone programs. Keystone is a teen program that offers leadership development, by providing young people an opportunity to participate and focus in three areas: academics success, career preparation and community service.

www.blissmwr.com

There’s also the “Go Girls” club. MYAC provides a safe place for young girls to explore and discuss many issues they may face in today’s world. The club is a mentorship program where young girls get educated on a healthy lifestyle, self-confidence and success through group discussions. The young men also have a similar curriculum that is a Boys’ and Girls’ Club of America-based program: the “Passport to Manhood” club, a syllabus of resources for promoting positive values and responsible behavior for young men ages 11-14. This club is run by Wally Hildreth, another CYPA at the facility. Hildreth also facilitates gym programs, extreme sports and tournaments. Some of the physicallychallenging ventures include a rockclimbing wall, archery, dance, a full basketball court, weights, hiking, disc golf, paintball and the Tango Tower. “It’s really cool. I just love what we’re able to do here,” said Goss. Among other cool activities available

at the MYAC are field trips, a state-ofthe-art studio for those who want to expound on their musical talents and a Gamers’ Den, where a variety of video games are housed for hours of friendlycompetition. MYAC even offers gaming tournaments! Teens may also participate in the 4H and EDGE clubs. The 4H club provides young people a platform for discussing their interests and the staff determines what project would best suit their desires. It’s a way for the youth to be a productive part of the community by giving back with activities such as hosting special events for Families, visiting and helping those in need and organizing and participating in campaigns such as bullying prevention, drug awareness and so much more. The EDGE club (Experience, Develop, Grow and Excel), provides out-ofschool opportunities for 11- to 18-yearolds by participating in activities that encompass four broad interest areas in one-month sessions: art, fitness, life and adventure. Current projects that the facility teens are working on include creating a quilt to be donated to the wounded warriors. “Our goal is to make them feel part of the community,” said Goss. So parents, if you are new to the community and want to get your teens involved– in a safe, educational environment – MYAC is a great place to start. Now that the holidays have passed, the wrapping paper has been recycled and the bills begin to roll in ... and millions of Americans read over their credit card statements in disbelief, wondering, “What was I thinking?” No wonder, then, that managing debt and saving money often appear on lists of New Year’s resolutions – but moving from idea to implementation can be difficult, and that’s where the Financial Readiness Program at Army Community Service comes in. A staff of financial professionals is waiting to help members of the Fort Bliss community define and attain their financial goals. “Going into the new year, you think about starting fresh, starting new,” said Ana Hernandez, a financial readiness specialist with the program. “New Year’s is a good time to review what you have and what you have accomplished, financially speaking. If you are happy, let’s continue what you’re doing or do a bit more. For example, maybe you’ve had some hiccups along the way and you’ve kind of neglected your credit, so this year your focus is to clean up your credit.” If you’re not happy with where you stand financially, now’s the time to make plans for what you want to accomplish and set goals for the upcoming year, she added. One of the keys to starting off the new year on the right foot financially is to not get into debt over the holidays, she said. If it’s too late for that, Hernandez said, now’s the time to prepare for the next round of festivities. “If you didn’t have a good savings for the holiday season, go ahead and open an account that is strictly for Christmas and start building,” she said. “Even if it’s just $25 per pay period, start putting into that account now.” A solid savings habit is important to overall financial health, Hernandez noted. “Ideally, we want to have a savings of three to six months of living expenses put back,” she said. “If you don’t have that, now’s a good time to start. I’m a fan of opening an account at a different institution than where you have your main

www.blissmwr.com

household account because otherwise, it’s too easy to make that transfer when you feel a little bit of a pinch. That’s not really saving, if you’re putting in every month, but then every month you’re pulling back out. “We are our own worst enemies when it comes to savings,” Hernandez added. Budgeting is another way to help rein in expenses and find ways to save. Putting everything down on paper can help one get a better idea of where the money is going. “Really pay attention to where you’re spending your money,” Hernandez said. “Track it. Print out one month’s bank statement and see what your expenses are. ... Put them into categories and you can really get a good picture of how much you’re spending, and where, so you can see ‘Oh my god, I didn’t realize I was spending $400 a month eating out!’ and cut back.” Once someone knows where the money is going, she said, they can begin to make adjustments. “Do your budget and figure out where you can cut back,” Hernandez said. “Can you cut $20 from your cell phone bill? Can you cut $20 from your grocery bill? Can we cut back on electricity, conserve energy and save 20 bucks? That’s $60 a month right there, if you’re willing to make those changes. ... These are small things we can all do, we just have to have the discipline to do them. I’m a big fan of taking small bites to get your final destination.”

community ACS

New year, new plan

If cleaning up your credit is your goal, Financial Readiness can help with that, too. “Pull your credit report through annualcreditreport.com and see what’s on it,” Hernandez said. “If this is your first time and you don’t know how to read it, come into ACS. There are four financial educators, and that’s what we’re here to do: help you.” Reading a credit report and disputing any incorrect information can be a complicated process, she noted. “If you’re fearful of doing it alone, schedule some time to come in – it’s not a quick procedure – but allow some time and we can show you how do that,” Hernandez said. “We’re here to meet the needs of the Soldiers,” she added. “We offer classes every single week, and we have four financial educators on staff ready to meet with you. Our goal is to make sure that our Soldiers, Families, retirees and civilians working on the installation achieve their financial goals.” Classes offered cover topics including budgeting, saving, investing, real estate, consumer awareness, car buying, identity theft and more. There’s also a representative of Consumer Credit Counseling Services on hand to help with debt management. To schedule an appointment with one of the program’s financial educators, call (915) 568-1132. For more information on the program, visit www.blissmwr.com/ frp.

Heather Wilburn, Family and MWR Marketing

The Fort Bliss Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers program is ringing in the new year with new leadership. Sgt. Elizabeth Lozano, president, and Pfc. Chasidey Ricks, vice president, are ready to get Fort Bliss’ single Soldiers out of the barracks and off the couch. “We’re trying to reach all of our Soldiers – every single one of them – even the barracks rats and the couch potatoes,” Lozano said. “I want to get them involved; I want them involved with their fellow Soldiers and with the Fort Bliss and El Paso communities.” “We’re really fired up about the programs we have planned for our Soldiers,” Ricks said. “There are going to be a lot of exciting opportunities coming up.” A skate party at Rollerbomb in El Paso is set for 3-6 p.m. January 17. Admission costs $5 and includes skating, pizza and a beverage, and transportation. Pre-registration is required; call (915) 538-5835 for information. Tentatively scheduled activities include a January 14 trip to Carlsbad Caverns, a soul food party January 15, and a movie and game night January 16. In February, BOSS plans a ski trip to Ruidoso, N.M. Dates are currently set for February 18-21. A March 18-21 trip to San Antonio is on the books. Activities will include time at Six Flags over Texas or Sea World, depending on interest. More events will come together as the team does the same. For more information, call the BOSS program at (915) 538-5835 or (915) 744-5792, or visit www.blissmwr.com/boss.
