“See you out there.” Mark Cauthers

ABOUT THE COVER What a difference ten years makes! The first publication of BlissNOW came out in early 2005; it was 23 pages long with 10,000 printed quarterly. Back then Fort Bliss had approximately 9,600 Soldiers and today we are home to over 35,000 Soldiers. As the installation has evolved so has BlissNOW. Today we continue to produce four magazines each year but we’ve increased to 35,000 in circulation. The magazine is a little heavier thanks to 56 pages of articles, maps, calendars, coupons, a phone roster and much more. The first editor explained that the magazine’s mission was to “help the community gain knowledge of Fort Bliss and MWR programs, and become a tool for Soldiers and their Families to learn more about their installation”. This mission still remains true to this day. It’s not an easy task, but it’s one that we are incredibly proud to complete each quarter. We hope you enjoy this anniversary edition!

GILA CLIFF DWELLINGS On Saturday, January 24, escape your busy life and take a journey with Outdoor Recreation for an overnight camping trip. The trip will take you to the sandstone cliff caves known as the Gila Cliff Dwellings on the edge of the Gila Wilderness. Located in what is now the heart of western New Mexico’s Gila National Forest, the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument offers a glimpse of the homes and lives of the people of the Mogollon culture who lived there from the 1280’s through the early 1300’s. The monument is a small site of just

553 acres, containing the ruins of interlinked cave dwellings built in five cliff alcoves, reached today by an easy one mile loop trail along a narrow canyon. While you’re there, take a dip in one of several hot springs found near the Gila Cliff Dwellings and don’t forget your cameras. The views from the cliff are breathtaking. I’ve always been a runner. In the fall of 2001, at the age of 27, I decided there was no time like the present to get to work on a goal of running a marathon before I turned 30. I was teaching and coaching in rural Indiana at the time. I could squeeze the miles in between school and practices during the week. And with zero social life living in the middle of cornfields, I had plenty of free time on the weekends to train. By April 2001, I was trained and ready to run the Music City Marathon in Nashville, TN. My younger sister made the drive down with me the day before the race. We stayed at a budget friendly hotel downtown that was happy to valet park our car for free under the hotel. At 4:00 a.m. the morning of the race I planned to drive to the Titan’s stadium and catch a shuttle bus that would take runners to the start of the race in a park several miles away. To my extreme panic, the hotel staff informed me it would take them a couple hours to jostle around the cars to get to mine; I should have given them more notice. We would need to walk the mile or so to the stadium, through the mean streets of Nashville (ok, I’m not a city girl) at 4:00 a.m. Enter my knight in swishy sweats! I spot a tall, clean cut guy, obviously a fellow runner with an older gentleman who appeared to be his father, heading out the door. I asked them if they’d mind us following them to the stadium. They welcomed us to follow them, and we found they too were triple parked under the hotel. I’m smitten by their thick Kentucky accents. We saw a guy in a white 3-piece suit with his old lady on a Harley with Hank Williams blaring from their radio (cupid?), and we’re at the stadium before I knew it getting on the shuttle bus. Not wanting to be forward, I sat alone. But thankfully, my future 18 | WINTER 2015

husband waited for me after we arrived at the staging area, and we talked some more. It was chilly, and he offered me a trash bag to keep warm. (It’s a runner thing). We walked to the starting line together. He told me his name was Bill, we wished each other luck, and I took a good look at his race number. The race started, there was no way I could keep up with him, but I really hoped I’d see him again. I finished the race and found my sister. As I wobbled back to the hotel with her, she filled me in on the sales pitch my future father-in-law had given her on the walk back from the stadium that morning. I’m kicking myself for not getting his number at least! All race participants received a free ticket to a country music concert the night of the race. This year it was Martina McBride. My sister and I enjoyed the show, but I have to admit I spent a lot of the night scanning the crowd. As fate would have it, after the concert as we were walking out of the venue whom should appear but Bill. I shouted his name several times, but he didn’t hear. Luckily they had given out free concert posters, and I was able to bop him with one on the head to get his attention. So with blisters on my toes the size of golf balls, we spent a night on the town, took in the downtown Nashville music scene and exchanged numbers and emails before saying goodnight. Long story short, a long distance romance blooms, I in Indiana, he at Ft. Hood in Texas. By the spring of 2002 we were married. I wasn’t looking for love that weekend in Nashville, and I typically believe in human volition over fate. But no question the Keeper of the Stars was looking out for us that day! facebook.com/blissmwr

From sparks flying to complete confusion, the love stories poured in; far more of them than we can possibly publish. But for Valentine’s Day, here are a few more we think you’ll love to read.

NATHAN & CHELSEA

This is the true story of how my wife and I met. I was a Sgt with the city police department and she owned a beauty shop. She “accidentally” set off her alarm one day. An officer responded, but the business information was not up to date. I went to update her information for the dispatcher. I obtained the info and went on my way. A few weeks later I went into my bank. One of the bank tellers was a customer of hers. The bank teller pulled me aside and asked me to talk to her hairdresser about safety. She said the hairdressers leave after dark and she is concerned about them. I went by the salon and talked to them about how to safely close up after dark. While there, she asked if I would like a haircut. She was wearing a tube top and white linen pants. While she was cutting my hair she “accidentally” dropped the comb. It looked on purpose and I knew it was because as she bent over to pick up the comb she looked back to see if I was looking. I was. We exchanged numbers and she called me before I got out of the parking lot. Two weeks later she asked me to marry her. A month later I did. If asked, she will swear it didn’t happen this way. Don’t believe her.

My husband and I originally met through a mutual best friend in high school. It was love at first sight for him; me, not so much. Needless to say, he was put into the “friend zone”, and even tried to set him up with my friends while he watched me date others. He really was my best friend for a few years, even though we didn’t see each other very often while I went off to college and he worked in a neighboring city. Then one day I ran into him, and he looked good! He still had a crush on me, so we started dating. We married before he shipped out to basic less than a year later. We’ve been married for almost six years, been together for seven, known each other for 10, been through two deployments, and have four children together. Definitely not a fairytale romance or wedding, but we are incredibly happy, and to this day I thank him for not giving up on me during those three years of being in the “friend zone”!

After spending about ten hours on a charter bus from Southern Illinois to Atlanta, Georgia we had both finally arrived at the National Catholic Youth Conference (NCYC) in October 2005 when we were in high school . We did not know each other when we first got there, but we ended up meeting at the hotel one night since our Diocese stayed at the same hotel. During the long weekend we spent most of our time together and convenient enough his Brother hung out with my best friend. After the weekend was over we loaded up the four charter buses and made our way back to Southern Illinois. Nathan and I were on different buses, but we saw each other at each stop and made plans to see each other for dinner. I can remember falling asleep on the bus and waking up to find out the four buses split up. I was disheartened to say the least because Nathan had never asked for my number. A few months went by and I finally had an idea. Nathan was on the Youth Council for our Diocese and during the conference had introduced me to the head of the council so I got the courage to send her an email asking for his information. She gave me his name and I was able to look him up on MySpace. After MySpace we spoke on AOL instant messenger everyday and the rest his history. We spent six years in a long distance relationship before we finally got married!

MORE HOW WE MET April, 1986. A boy named Brett pulled me out of a horse stall into the sunshine to “get a better look at me.” It was love at first sight. 2 years later when our youth became too much of a struggle he said “see you when we’re 50.” We went on and lived our lives and had kids and grew up a lot. November, 2013. I saw something on facebook that reminded me of him. I found him all right. 26 years later. The love of my life deployed to the other side of the world. We chatted for 5 months. I flew to El Paso to meet him when he returned. We got engaged in May, married in June and are happily living the rest of our lives together.

It was many, many moons ago that I made the life changing decision to join the Army back in January 2009. I was excited to start this new chapter of my life so I wasted no time shipping out to basic training. Little did I know what was waiting for me there and how my life really would change! My husband shipped out to basic around the same time and we ended up in the same company at Ft. Leonardwood. Every single day, I got to see his bright smile and ridiculously cute dimpled chin. There was no denying my crush on him! I finally worked up the nerve to talk to him (after many practice conversations in my head!) He had a book full of cadences that I asked if I could borrow. Of course, being the sweetheat that he is, he said yes. I didn’t look at a single page in that book, never even opened it. I just wanted any reason to talk to him. As graduation drew near, I returned his book to him, thinking my shy personality had made me miss my chance and I would never see him again. I couldn’t have been more wrong. We reconnected via Facebook while he was deployed and talked every single day, for as long as we could. We had never kissed, held hands or even hugged but still, we fell in love. Not even being half a world away from each other could stop us, we both knew this was going to last forever. When he got back, I flew out to his hometown, where we had our very first kiss just days before we got married. 4 years later, we’re in love more than ever and are expecting our second child next summer. It’s funny to think that a book led to our first conversation and Facebook led to our happily ever after. Thank goodness for books!

We were on opposite teams during a Commanders Cup soccer match. We were aggressive towards each other throughout the match with some back and forth words of “encouragement.” The ball was passed to my area and I charge towards it. She comes rushing across the field to gain possession. Again, we both slide towards the ball, but it was as if time slowed down; in mid-slide our eyes lock and what was an aggressive approach turned into a protective instinct as i embraced her rather than kick her in her shins. We rolled across the field and in front of about 60 personnel she kissed me. Her team won and afterwards she invited me for starbucks. 3 and a half kids later and 7 years down the road we still live in that moment.

My husband and I met in 2005. It was on Christmas Eve. He was stationed in Korea and used Vonage to call his mother. The last four digits of her phone number were 9075 and mine were 9072. Needless to say he called the wrong number. I returned the call, thinking it was a friend of mine, but little did I know, it would be the love of my life. We got engaged on Valentine’s day. He flew me to Korea for the first time it was even my first flight! I enjoyed the visit. He came home from Korea in 2006. We got married on November 29, 2006 and here we are; 3 beautiful children, love going strong, going on 8 years this year! This is how we meet and I wouldn’t change it for the world!

BRITTANY & THOMAS

I met my husband in Germany 2011. My husband and I were serving oversees where we both lived on the same post in Germany. We first saw each other at a night club in September 2011 but we never spoke to each other but we both knew the chemistry was there I just felt that he should come talk to me. So as time past, like a few weeks, my husband messages me on Facebook just to chat. We had short conversations and he was very persistent in getting to know me but I was too busy with school and work to give him the time of day lol and I also was trying to play hard to get. So a friend of mines wanted to go out on the town and I saw that Thomas also wanted to go out and I decided we all should go. All of our friends all went out on October 30, 2011; from that night my life changed forever. During the long drive to the night club we were ran off the autobahn and destroyed some Germany grass. (Germany is very strict about their grass). Everyone was OK and while we were getting ourselves together we shared our first kiss in the freezing cold German weather while waiting on the police to finish observing the scene and I knew then he was my soul mate. Even though that night appeared to be a disaster in every way, I was completely content having Thomas by my side and having this near death experience didn’t seem to matter to me. After the night ended we both went back to our barracks and the next day while I was completing school work, he called and we were discussing the night laughing and he finally came out and said “so I guess your my girl now?” I laughed and said “I guess I am now.” We have gotten married and had a beautiful daughter together and I wouldn’t trade any of it for the world! www.blissmwr.com

Some say you have to work for love. Others say love finds you. For us, love came in the form of an unintended hug and a dream come true for two best friends. Growing up, my friend and I always played house, pretending we were sisters. When she got engaged, there was no question I was going to be part of her wedding party. When the day finally arrived, the wedding was beautiful but the night soon came to an end. From across the church, I spotted who I thought was Cody, her groom, wearing his army dress blues. In an attempt to say a quick goodbye, I goofily ran over in preparation to ambush hug the groom from behind, only to be greeted by his looka-like brother mid-stride. By the time I realized it was not the groom, it was far too late to do anything but exclaim “I’m a hugger!” and go full force into what would later be known as the hug that brought two love birds together. After an awkward few moments, we exchanged names, said our goodbyes and headed our separate ways. Days later, this lucky bridesmaid found herself being pursued by non other than the mystery army brother. With deployment only weeks away, we began what some would call a long distant love story through countless letters, care packages, Skype dates and ever-anticipated phone calls. Two years later, with a 9-month deployment under our belt and less than 30 days actually spent together in person, we found ourselves engaged and preparing a fall wedding. For most, that would be the end of this story; however, we seem to be anything but the typical boy meets girl scenario. Due to a change in Tanner’s military orders, we had two options for getting married. Either we could post-pone the wedding until an unforeseen date or some how pull together a 200+ guest list wedding in just 3 short weeks. August 23rd, 2014, 3 weeks later, Tanner and I were married and my best friend and I fulfilled our childhood dream of truly becoming family.

Our story begins when I was a senior in high school and decided to join the army. I was in church one Sunday talking to one of my youth leaders about how I was really nervous and anxious for basic training and she asked where I was going so I told her fort Jackson. She proceeded to tell me that her son went there for basic training and I should add him on Facebook for any information and to ease my mind a bit on the matter. So I forgot about what she told me but remembered about a month later so I looked him up and sent him a really long message and he messaged me explaining basic training and asking if I was physically ready. He suggested that we meet up so he can help me with my PT. It sounded logical to me, plus his profile picture was kind of cute so I thought why not. Later that week, we met up at the YMCA to work out together. About half way thru he asked me to lunch. We began spending more and more time together. One week from that lunch we stopped at an overlook on the mountain and watched the sunset while playing truth or dare. He dared me to get about an inch from his face and he kissed me. We started hiking, going to the mall, cooking and spending all of our free time together. October came and I left for basic training, but I was medically discharged and home 6 weeks later. As soon as I got home, we decided we wanted to get married. He proposed while playing the game of ‘Life’ during the part where you get married, pretty ironic huh? We got married seven months later on our 1 year anniversary of dating in the church where I met his mom. Since our wedding, he has commissioned and we have two daughters. We still have more sparks more than ever! WINTER 2015 | 21

CENTENNIAL BANQUET & CONFERENCE CENTER

Candice Boston, Family and MWR Marketing Family and MWR is in the spotlight once again. Another facility has been selected by Fort Bliss Garrison for the Outstanding Activity Award. The Centennial Banquet and Conference Center proudly accepted the award at the Senior Leaders Update on October 7, 2014. The most recent numbers show that the Centenial is the number one revenue producing catering facility in the Army. The hard working and dedicated staff at the Centennial is a testament to that. Whether it’s a working lunch for eight or a formal dinner for eighteen hundred, their commitment to excellence never waivers. Good food, quality service and a great atmosphere all complete an experience that is second to none, only surpassed by their desire to not simply meet your expectation, but to exceed them in every way. As the 2nd largest banquet facility in the area, the Centennial is the place to be and “caters” to both Fort Bliss and the El Paso Community. If you have an event coming up and want a top-notch experience, consult with the staff at the Centennial Banquet and Conference Center located at 11199 Sgt. E. Churchill St. on East Fort Bliss. e would like take a moment to pay tribute and bid a very sad farewell to a man that has blessed our organization with his dedication and friendship for more than 30 years. MWR, very unexpectedly, lost one of its hidden gems on November 26, 2014. Peter Frantz was truly the Wizard of Oz, the man behind the curtain, of the Centennial Banquet and Conference Center. A majority of his career was spent making the audio/visual magic happen at every Centennial Club function. You may not have noticed, but he was always there in the background making sure everything ran smoothly. He was a friend to all and always put the organization first. His loss will be felt throughout the entire Fort Bliss community.

MWRFOOD&FUN

FOR THE FUTURE

OF THE GAME

Candice Boston, Family and MWR Marketing Running a golf course is a challenging enterprise at any time, given the six-digit annual maintenance costs inherent in the business, but it is especially difficult nowadays with the current economic climate in addition to the shrinking free time of golfers. Golf can be costly and time-consuming which isn’t always popular with young professionals and youth, yet they will ultimately determine the industry’s long-term destiny. Today, golf management is faced with the formidable task of not only selling young people on the sport but also convincing cost-conscious consumers that golf is worth the investment. To compensate for the impact that time constraints and economic downturn has had on participation, Dallas Cooke, Manager and Golf Pro at Underwood Golf Complex, has organized several outreach programs directed at casual golfers through free group clinics. “I am aware that passion alone isn’t enough to keep people interested in the game,” he stated. “Golf is an entertainment business and if you’re not having fun, you’ll find something else to do.” These clinics are designed to teach the game in a way that can be enjoyed by all. Beginning Saturday, March 7, and the first Saturday of every month thereafter, Underwood will host the Hook a Soldier on Golf Clinic. This is a free, one-hour golf lesson for all active-duty service members and their Families. PGA instructors will be on hand to provide complimentary golf lessons on driving, fairway woods and iron play. Beginners can learn the basics while novice golfers improve their golf game. For those of you who have tried unsuccessfully to introduce your spouse to the golf game, buying her a brand new set of clubs probably won’t change her mind either. This March, try encouraging her to attend the Hook a Spouse on Golf Clinic. This free, one-hour clinic is a great way to 30 | WINTER 2015

learn the game quickly and start enjoying it immediately. Why is this a much more successful method, you ask? Women prefer playing golf in groups with other women. If you’ve wondered why you rarely see females alone on the driving range, it’s because most ladies are discouraged by hitting shanks, tops, and whiffs out there by themselves. If you have a group of females together all doing the same thing, it’s instantly way more exciting for them to laugh at their bad shots. Hook a Spouse on Golf Clinic begins Wednesday, March 11 and the second Wednesday of each month thereafter until September. No equipment is necessary for either clinic. Range balls and golf clubs will be provided by Underwood Golf Complex. Any club member will tell you that belonging to a club or participating in its activities has enormous rewards. Cooke elaborated that he “wants to create a strong club, one with a strong and growing core of active members, one with a virtuous cycle of people who get involved, which generates more events and participation, in turn getting more people to join and renew.” Cooke is actively working to implement more programs and events into this year’s golf season to create more interest in the game. HPRC’s human performance optimization (HPO) website is for U.S. Warfighters, their Families, and those in the field of HPO who support them. U.S. Army MWR Marketing After numerous holiday parties, lavish dinners, drinks with friends, and candy at the office, thousands of people will make a New Year’s resolution to start fresh on January 1 and fitness facilities across the country crowd with those aspiring to live better. Physical fitness is not only a vital part of a healthy and proactive lifestyle, it is also a great way to improve mental health and stability. Gym attendance hits record highs after the first of the year and then steadily drops after one month. So how can you commit to your New Year’s Resolution for good? Add variety. Family and MWR’s programs encourage fitness as a way to improve both healthy physical and mental activity. In doing so there are a number of viable options including weight training, cardiovascular exercise, fitness classes, working with a personal trainer, swimming laps or using a different workout space. You will reenergize your routine by making small, yet significant, changes. Whether you are a Soldier or Family member, starting your fitness program depends mostly on the type of exercise that best fits your preferences. If you are more interested in increasing your flexibility and muscular strength, then you may want to pursue exercise like yoga. On the other hand, if you want to improve your cardio while losing body fat and increasing muscle performance, then you may consider resistance training and running. Regardless of which you prefer, your fitness goal can be obtained at home or at the gym. The Human Performance Resource Center (HPRC) is a great source of information for Soldiers and their Families who want to optimize their fitness levels from the comfort of their home. However, if a gym is more your speed, you can check out the amentities and group fitness schedules of MWR’s fitness facilities at www.blissmwr.com. No matter if you choose to get fit at home or at the gym, both are a great way to maintain your fitness level and kick cabin fever.

10TIPS FOR MARATHON RUNNERS

U.S. Army MWR Marketing Running a marathon is never easy, but it can be extremely rewarding. It’s a great way to stay healthy, test your physical and mental limits, and compete with other committed runners. Here are a few guidelines that can make your marathon run a more successful and enjoyable experience.

1

Start preparing for your marathon several months in advance. Successfully running 26 miles requires consistent and regular training, even if you are already in great shape. Start small and gradually increase your running distance as your body gets used to running farther every day.

2 3

Go on one longer run every week. Running several miles every day helps to build your strength and endurance, and going on one substantially longer run once a week helps you push yourself and get closer to the 26 mile goal. Train your body. Running every day for several months is fantastic exercise, and according to the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition, it helps strengthen muscles, train your heart and lungs, and build up your endurance – or, for many servicemen and women, maintain it.

4

Train your mind. The mental skills required to run a marathon successfully are also important, and improve over time. Regular practice can help increase your discipline and determination, which makes you more likely to succeed in the marathon – and improves your dayto-day life as well.

MWRSPORTS FITNESS AQUATICS

5 6 7 8

Eat well. According to Healthfinder.gov, marathon runners need to consume high amounts of carbohydrates to build up their energy reserves before a run, and consume lean protein to build up strength and muscle mass. Stay hydrated. Drinking water is always important, especially for marathon runners. Dehydration can sink a marathon attempt. During a long race like a marathon, it is extremely important to hydrate before the race, during the race, and after the race. Know your own limits. Pushing yourself very hard can feel natural, but be mindful of the signs your body gives you. Stick to your training schedule and don’t push beyond it. That said, recent studies have suggested that marathons are just as healthy for baby boomers as for younger generations.

Enjoy the other health benefits. Consistent exercise helps prevent many chronic diseases, including cancer, stroke, and heart disease, according to the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition. And healthfinder.gov states that regular exercise helps relieve stress, increase self-esteem, improve your sleep hygiene, and raise energy levels.

9

Study the history of the marathon. The marathon and its distance – not just twenty six miles, but twenty six miles and 385 yards – has a long history that may resonate with Army men and women. It’s an inspiring story of sacrifice in the face of great odds, and a Soldier’s bravery under exceptional circumstances.

10

Rest well for the big race, knowing that you are prepared. Push yourself, stay hydrated, keep your carb levels high and your spirits up, and you can accomplish this great athletic feat. Running a marathon can feel like a pipedream to a new runner, but the thought of running 26.2 miles is daunting even for those who have completed multiple already. Don’t forget, you aren’t running the marathon alone. Many resources exist to support marathon runners. Family and MWR has an extensive Sports and Fitness programs that can provide support toward reaching your goal – even if it is 26.2 miles away.

BENEFITS OF

FAMILY CHILD CARE Sarrah Morgan, Family and MWR Marketing Many of you may not be aware of the hidden jewel that we have here on Ft Bliss. That hidden jewel is our FCC. So, what is a Family Child Care Home or FCC? According to Laura Villalobos, Fort Bliss FCC Director, “FCC is a home away from home type of care that can be utilized by military and MWR employees. FCC also gives military spouses an opportunity to start up their own business in child care, but most importantly, it is a place for providers to contribute to their Families and help out other Families with care while staying at home”. Army Family Child Care Homes are similar to child development centers and school aged services, however, having your child in a FCC home allows them to be in a home environment. Children are actually inside the provider’s home and for many children that is comforting, but for parents it is a benefit. According to Mrs. Villalobos there are many benefits to not only being a FCC provider, but there are also benefits to enrolling your child in FCC facilities. For example, FCC providers receive free training and certifications through the Army. This ensures that FCC providers are trained and are certified to legally care for children. The benefits for parents to enroll children is that it is about 10% cheaper to have your child enrolled in a FCC facility, yet still getting all the same before and after school care as well as late night, weekend care and care while your spouse is deployed. One of the most important details to mention is that FCC providers are not just babysitters; they still have the same curriculum as the CDC and SAS. They have to follow the same rules, they have frequent home inspections, they need to pass background checks and uphold Army standards at all times. Demica Eady has been a FCC provider for about two years. She says the best thing about being a provider is “seeing her kids grow”. She has had one particular child since he was about six weeks old; he is now a year old and growing.

Elizabeth Dewitt has been with the FCC for 15 years. She said the biggest benefit from being a provider is “being able to stay home and be a mom, yet help to support my Family”. Being with the FCC for so many years Elizabeth has created bonds with her FCC kids. “I still have kids I keep in contact with and some of them are already graduating from high school”. Isela Orona has been a provider for 10 years and says, “it’s great to watch the kids grow and see them doing things that I taught them”. For example, Isela teaches her children Spanish and for some parents that is a huge benefit. “The FCC is a place to help military Families; we want to give both our providers and our Families the tools that they need to succeed. We do this by certifying the provider, by reducing the cost of child care and by providing a lending closet for our providers to make their homes a fun place for learning”. If you are interested in becoming a FCC provider or enrolling your child with the FCC, please call (915) 568-4198. Left: FCC provides a carefully planned early childhood curriculum designed to encourage your child’s development in several areas.

IT’S PARTY TIME

CELEBRATE YOUR CHILD’S BIRTHDAY WITH FAMILY & MWR U.S. Army MWR Marketing Planning a kid’s birthday party with Fort Bliss MWR is the perfect way to bring together Family and friends to celebrate an important day. Making the party fun is important, but making it unique and interesting to everyone who is invited also is essential. The following ideas for a military kid’s birthday party can easily be incorporated into your child’s special day. • Plan a bowling party. Book a spot at Desert Strike Lanes, slip on those wacky shoes, and let the good times roll. Most kids, especially those over the age of 5 or 6, are happy to spend a few hours bowling. Inexpensive, easy-to-plan, and overall ideal for any age group, bowling parties work well for any birthday party. The Bowling Center has arcade games, pool tables, a snack bar, and ample seating. For more information, call (915) 568-6272. • Party in the park. Just because you can spend hundreds of dollars celebrating your child’s big day doesn’t mean you have to. Biggs Park has special perks that can make hosting an outdoor party easier and more fun. The park is filled with covered pavilions, picnic tables, playgrounds for all ages and plenty of space to run around. And during the summer months, take a dip at Biggs’ very own splash park. Recreational equipment such as the ever popular bounce houses are also available for rent. This type of party may require more work than booking one of those all-inclusive packages, but you get to control most of the details, including the cost. For more information, call (915) 744-8087. • Keep it inside. Although the El Paso area experiences nice weather year around, sometimes the wind, heat and occasional rain storm may require partying indoors. If this is the case, check out the Trading Post. This 2,000-square-foot in-

door playground for children offers a place for climbing, sliding, crawling, jumping, swinging, plus the added stimulation of a multi-level playground structure complete with tunnels, a toddler area, ball pits, and ball blasters. A dedicated party area is complete with tables and chairs to accommodate small and large groups. For more information, call (915) 568-6272. • House party. If you want to keep the party close to home, but you need a few key items, check out Equipment Rental. Chairs, tables, grills, coolers, tents and other party must-haves are available for rent for a nominal fee. For more information, call (915) 744-1532/8087. These are just a few ideas from the many options Family and MWR has to offer in the terms of birthday parties. Maybe one of these ideas fit what your child would enjoy, if not, log onto www.blissmwr.com and browse our website. The possibilities are endless.

BUDGET CLEAN UP

With the holidays complete, it’s time to clear out and get ready for spring! We have a few helpful hints on creating a realistic budget for you and your Family.

U.S. Army MWR Marketing

Many people live from paycheck to paycheck and find it relatively hard to make ends meet at the end of the month. However, if you can create a budget that is economical for you and your Family then you may be able to make ends meet just a little bit easier. The following are a few ideas on how to begin cleaning up your budget. 1. Sit down, either alone or with your spouse, and make the long list of all of your bills that you pay on a monthly basis. This includes your mortgage, utilities, car payment, as well as any other bills that you have. 2. For this budget, you need to eliminate your luxuries – things that you don’t need,

but simply want. 3. Try to keep your utility bills as low as possible. For example, open the windows on a cool, windy day rather than running the air conditioner. Turn off lights when you leave a room. Take shorter showers. You’d be amazed how much money you can save with these little things. 4. Cut down on your grocery bill. Only purchase things that you need – not all the extras like candy, sodas, and things of that nature. 5. Have a budget for emergencies that may occur and other needed adventures. This includes gas money and household products, such as toilet paper, paper plates, etc. 6. Add all of your expenses, including your emergency and needs budget, to create one number. This is what you realistically require to live on an economical budget, without all the luxuries that you really can live without. It may be hard at first to live by this

new budget, but it will help improve your overall lifestyle in the long run and could definitely help save money allowing for you to actually create a savings account for the Family. The most important thing is to be honest about your budget. Do not create an economical budget that has no reality of staying alive within your household. Create a matter-of-fact reasonable budget for you and your Family to abide by. Remember, the most essential element of finding success with this is eliminating the things you want and don’t need. By using these tips, you will create a more realistic budget for your Family that makes sense, and who knows, you may even be able to have some left over so that you can splurge every now and then! For more information on financial matters, contact the Financial Readiness Program at Army Community Service (ACS), 2494 Ricker Road or call (915) 569-4227.

Also available for all DoD ID card holders are computers with internet and printer capabilities, copy machine, send and receive faxes, and DSN public phones.

Last Saturday of Month, 10am-3pm

Every August, the Relocation Assistance Program hosts an installation wide relocation fair with representation from agencies on and off post. With over 150 agencies represented, this is a great time to quickly become familiar with the resources best suited for you and your family.

Quarterly

People Encouraging People (PEP)

MONTHLY

MONTHLY Join us for this AMAZING newcomer’s orientation for adult Family members. During a fun-filled three day orientation, you’ll learn about the services available to you at ACS and other community agencies and get a tour of Fort Bliss and the surrounding areas. It’s a great way to learn your way around, meet others new to the installation, and become one HOT PEPper!

Relocating isn’t easy! Relocating overseas is even harder. Our experienced staff is ready to assist you with your overseas move by providing you some firsthand knowledge of the overseas experience to ensure a smooth transition for you and your Family.

Passport Processing Traveling abroad? Need a passport? The Relocation Assistance Program is pleased to host quarterly passport processing dates at Army Community Service courtesy of our local passport office. Please check http://travel.state. gov/passport/ for information on fees and forms.

Sponsorship Program Are you about to make a PCS move? If so, then you should request a sponsor with your new duty station. Sponsors serve as your “representative” before you arrive, provide information to you, and show you around upon your arrival.

Immigration Counseling Every Wed, 8:00am-4:00pm The El Paso Field Office of the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) maintains an information office to assist you with your immigration questions. The USCIS officer will answer questions and provide and review application packets. This service is provided at no cost to all DoD ID card holders.
