ABOUT THE COVER

Vendor: FAST Release Date: 16 Nov 16

This summer issue is SO busy we have two magazine covers! Our first cover features Maj. Matt Beall, his wife and their girls. They recently moved into military housing and were gracious enough to pose for the Bliss NOW magazine. Second cover features Maurice NitschkeBinder of the German Schuplattler Dance Group. We hope this cover gets you as excited for Oktoberfest as we are! This is an event packed issue with summer fun-times.

RELEASED TO VENDOR

ONE WORLD. ONE VOICE. ONE MAGAZINE.

ONE GREAT STAFF.

Welcome to your BlissNow magazine! This summer edition is filled with wonderful information on events and venues for you to get out and enjoy. In this issue we are highlighting Group Fitness, the Relocation Fair, German American Night Run and of course, our popular Oktoberfest. This entire period is filled with our wonderful team providing the services to our community members. Of note, many of our team members signed up for these positions because of the service nature within. In addition, many of our staff are spouses of a service member or are veterans themselves and they all know the reason we serve those who serve. Family and MWR is committed to the service culture and being the tip of innovation for the Installation Command. Side note: Popsicles, a popular summer treat, were accidentally invented by an 11-year-old boy in San Francisco in 1905. He left a glass of soda, with a stirring stick, sitting outside and by the next morning the soda had frozen. Have a fun season and enjoy all that Fort Bliss, El Paso and beyond have to offer. See you out there!

MWR CALENDAR Do you have a school age child that struggles with reading? Come out to the Mickelsen Community Library from 4-5 p.m. every Wednesday and join Paws for Reading. Children will have the opportunity to read to a certified therapy dog to help improve their reading skills and build self-confidence. The main objective of this program is to provide a relaxed and “dog-friendly” atmosphere, which allows children to practice the skill of reading. This is an ideal program for children who have difficulties reading and as a result have developed self-esteem issues. By sitting down next to a dog and reading to the dog, all threats of being judged are put aside. The child relaxes, pats the dog, and focuses on reading. Parents must register for a time slot (roughly 15 minutes, or more if slots are available) on the Children’s side of the library. Registration will occur the day of the program, first-come, first-served basis. Maximum of 4 slots. Parents must remain at the library during the program. This is a free event for children ages 6-12. For more information, call 915-568-6156.

Family and MWR Golf

If you’re looking for a chance to practice your swing at golf there are plenty of options to choose from at Underwood Golf Complex. The first step is getting fitted for your clubs and then practice, either early before heading off to work or after school with your children. Buying new clubs can be a very important step in improving your game. Getting properly fitted is just as important. You may think that the stock set off the rack is good enough because you’re not a “pro,” but that is a mistake. In fact, the higher your handicap, the more improvement you will see from being correctly fitted to your clubs. There are three main parts to being fit. First is the lie angle. This is the angle at which the sole hits the turf at impact. If you have a steep swing, you may need a more upright lie. If your swing is flat and sweeping, you need a flat lie. Why is lie angle important? If your lie angle is too flat for your swing, it causes the toe of the club to dig into the turf www.bliss.armymwr.com

SWING INTO ACTION!

and open the face, causing a slice. If your lie angle is too upright, the heel can dig in and create a hook. Second, is the length. The proper length of the clubs will insure your posture and set up is correct. If you are taller and your clubs are too short, you will have to hunch over to reach the ball. If you are shorter, your clubs may be too long and you will have to stand too far away from the

ball, or have too steep of a spine angle. Third, is the shaft flex. Depending on your swing speed, your shaft flex can determine many factors of your ball flight. Typically, if your swing speed is 70 mph or less, you need a ladies flex, 70-80 senior flex, 80-95 regular flex, 95-105 stiff flex, and 105 plus stiff flex. A shaft with the wrong flex can rob you of distance and accuracy.

At Underwood, armed with the Trackman Simulator, we have the latest technology to make sure your next set of golf clubs are perfectly fit to you and your swing. Once you’re fitted, start practicing during the Early Bird Special! It will give customers who work an affordable way to come get some golf in before work. It is usually easier to find time before work rather than after. Play 9 holes Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. for $15. The price includes cart rental. If you have children interested in golf come and practice with them! Underwood Golf Complex offers an affordable rate to introduce children to the game of golf and a way for parents to bring them out. Children get to play golf for $5 Monday through Friday. Children ages 12 and younger must be accompanied by an adult. It’s open to children 16 and younger, they must walk, can only ride in a cart with a paying adult. DOGGY SWIM DAY

Hi everyone, it’s me Milo, your favorite four-legged friend! I hope you’re all ready for the dog days of summer because my friends at Family and MWR have a lot of really cool events for you this time of year. One event I am really wagging my tail about is our third Annual Doggy Swim Day Saturday, Sept. 23 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Community Pool! Every year it gets bigger and better; it’s a great addition for my furry friends! The costume contest, best trick contest, and look-a-like contest will be going on again. So come ready to win some p-awesome prizes! Well-behaved, vaccinated, furry friends are welcome to come out and enjoy a day of fun in the El Paso sun! But remember only doggies and their parents are allowed in the pool. Children get the whole summer to swim, this is our day to play! Children five and younger are also not allowed at the event, for safety reasons of course! Last year, I got pushed into the pool by a Great Dane, oh no! So safety first as I always say. The fee is $2 per dog – humans are free – and proof of current vaccinations are required at the registration table. For a list of rules and what is required, make sure to visit our website at bliss.armymwr. com, search “Doggy Swim Day.” I look forward to seeing all of my four-legged friends and their humans at my paw-vorite event!

Oktoberfest WHY IS OKTOBERFEST IN SEPTEMBER?

Sarrah Morgan

Family and MWR Marketing

Oktoberfest has been a long standing tradition here at Fort Bliss, yet year after year the same question is asked, “Why is Oktoberfest in September?” It’s a valid question, I mean October is in the name; however, there is a reason to the madness! Oktoberfest began in October 1810 in Munich, Germany. Citizens of Munich were invited to attend the wedding of Prince Ludwig – later to become King Ludwig I – to Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen. The celebration lasted a week, and Oktoberfest – as we know it – was born. The event grew over the decades, from one week to three weeks, involving horse races, beer tents and amusement rides. As the festival grew, the dates also shifted. In Germany, the weather is much nicer in September, so by moving the event from October to September, visitors were able to enjoy the gardens and take leisurely strolls much longer without feeling chilly. Like Munich the weather in El

Paso is perfect in September, so, mark your calendars for the biggest and best event at Fort Bliss! The 4th Annual Fort Bliss Oktoberfest will be Sept. 8-10 at Biggs Park. We are sure our celebration will not disappoint. Tickets are $35 and include an authentic German meal and beer stein, beer not included. Tickets go on sale Aug. 7 and can be purchased at both Leisure Travel Services (LTS) locations, inside Freedom Crossing and at the Soldier Activity Center or online at eventbrite.com. Pre-sale tickets can be purchased at Tap and Cork Craft Beer and Wine Festival from 2 to 6 p.m. Aug. 5 at the Centennial Banquet and Conference Center. The first 100 people to purchase tickets will receive a $5 discount per ticket. This is a great reason to get your tickets early because this event WILL sell out! Friday and Saturday night are ticketed days, open to patrons 18 and older. There are only 1500 tickets available each night. Gates open at 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Sunday is a free Family day from 12-5 p.m. no tickets required. All three days will have entertainment by Terry Cavanaugh and

the Alpine Express, performances by Fort Bliss’ very own, German Air Force Schuhplattler Dancers! Traditional German beer, delicious food, snacks and souvenirs will also be available for purchase. Sunday will also include food, dancing, jumping balloons and other Family fun activities. Oktoberfest is open to Fort Bliss and the El Paso community. So, come on over here, there will be plenty to eat and plenty of beer! Prost! For more information, call 915-5888247, visit our website at bliss.armymwr. com or find us on Facebook @blissmwr.

Successful course graduates will become NRACertified Firearms Instructors who can teach NRA courses independently. This course is a requirement for those who wish to become a Texas License to Carry Instructor. “Not only did this course certify me as an (NRA firearms) instructor, but it enhanced my skills as well,” said 1st Lt. D’Anthony Roohr, military police officer, USAR. The NRA Basic Pistol Instructor course will cover firearm safety, parts and operation of pistols, ammunition, firearm manipulation, shooting fundamentals, disassembly

The Fort Bliss Rod & Gun Club offers the NRA Pistol Instructor’s Course from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with a 30-minute lunch break, every three months, usually the fourth weekend. ody pump … Aquacycle … Pound … Aquafloat Interesting names but what do they mean? These are just a few of the many different types of fitness classes provided at Fort Bliss, each one with specific and fun goals to try! Have you ever heard people say, “I want to get into shape, but I don’t want to do it alone.” Family and MWR Group Fitness has the answer, let’s go “Behind the Scenes,” where exercise meets motivation! Group Fitness is a crucial part of the Sports, Fitness and Aquatics department. This program has more than 92 classes happening every week – from Body Pump to Aquafloat – and it’s all managed by one person, Julia Peterson, Group Fitness director for Family and MWR. “The hardest part of my job is funding,” Peterson said. “You have to be creative to keep things fresh, because if you keep things the same it becomes redundant.” Peterson works around the clock to keep pace with all the patrons who want to see more unique fitness classes here at Fort Bliss. Each week there are a variety of classes for service members and their Families and DoD Civilians to attend, whether you are into Insanity, cycling or swimming, every class gives you the workout you desire. Group Fitness is usually the first step for people who are not sure about where to start on their fitness journey. There are some people who like training one-on-one with an instructor or prefer to do things on their own. If you’re not sure if a certain class is for you? Don’t worry! Group Fitness provides free quarterly workshops with mini-classes for you to sample. Are you a more competitive type? Fitness Throwdown tests your strength, endurance and speed in five different events and it’s held every year in the spring. “I always look forward to our Fitness Throwdown, because we created it,” said

Third Annual Cardboard Regatta

SUNKEN SUMMER FUN

Michele Wiernicki

Family and MWR Marketing

The Cardboard Regatta is back and bigger than ever for its third year, Aug. 26! Don’t miss out on one of MWR’s most entertaining and creative events of the year. Last year’s competition was fierce; the boats were bigger and faster and well thought out. There were also many sailors that went down with their ships as well. Whether they stayed dry or were completely soaked, one thing was certain, everyone had an awesome time! This is a great opportunity to partner up with your kids or maybe with a fellow Soldier or even your spouse and use your minds and ingenuity to make cardboard float! The list of building materials is short – cardboard, duct tape, contact/ rubber cement and liquid nails. There are a few rules that must be followed

to prevent disqualification and one big one is the use of improper materials, so build wisely! We will provide each boat with a set of oars. This year we will have three race divisions: Adults ages 18 and older, kids ages 10-17 and our newestadult & child where we have lowered the child’s age to 6. In each division boats are required to have two sailors: a captain and a first mate, and they must remain in the boat at all times. Decorated boats and decorated sailors are a must because prizes will be awarded for things other than staying afloat. Awards will be given in the categories: Longest Voyage, Biggest Shipwreck and Most Creative. Obviously your number one goal should be avoid sinking and paddle the farthest at the fastest pace. However, sometimes the best designs fail and if that happens, the best thing a

sailor can do is go down as dramatically as possible. Think Oscar award-winning performance! This may get you the Biggest Shipwreck award. We are teaming up with our great friends at Fort Bliss Recycling and they will have cardboard available starting in early July. It’s also PCS season so if you get ahead of the game you can save boxes from your move or take some from a new neighbor. This year’s event will take place at the Community Pool on Club Road beginning at 1 p.m. This is a free event but pre-registration is required and can be done online at bliss.armymwr.com, search: Cardboard Regatta. Information about approved materials and rules can also be viewed on our website. So put your heads together, make a plan and start building! For more information, call 915-569-7294.

THE RACE IS ON! Sarrah Morgan

Family and MWR Marketing

If you have been on Fort Bliss anytime during the last 24 years then you probably know about the German American Night Run (GANR); but if you haven’t attended it yet you are missing out! What makes the GANR so special is that it is open to everyone in the Fort Bliss and El Paso community. Avid runners, new runners, walkers, moms and dads

with strollers, military units, corporate teams, JROTC and even your four-legged friends are all encouraged to participate. This run is also our only evening run followed by an Oktoberfest style party! The GANR began 24 years ago when Franz Huber a young German Air Force Soldier walked into the MWR sports office and proposed an event that would unite the German and American forces stationed at Fort Bliss. The

The 24th Annual German American Oktoberfest Night Run

MWR staff said yes and the GANR was born. Over the years the run has grown in both participation and fun! Participants can enjoy German beer, bratwurst, games, bounce houses, music and authentic German entertainment. It really is one big party and the German Air Force Schuhplattler Dancers are the ones bringing down the house! The Schuhplattler Dancers have been a staple at this event for years. They stomp and yell

and get the crowd pumped, they encourage dancing, they get people up and moving and they bring a certain kind of energy that can only be found at the GANR and Oktoberfest! This year’s GANR will be Saturday, Sept. 16 at Freedom Crossing. It is an 8K competitive race or a 5K fun run/ walk. Pre-race activities begin at 4 p.m. and the race kicks off at 6 p.m. Pre-registration will be open until Sept. 13 and

A read to dogs Natalie Hinojos

Family and MWR Marketing

Have you heard about the new “Reading to Dogs” program? For starters, it’s p-awesome! Imagine being able to visit dogs, who are looking for a fur-ever home, read to them and know you’re making a difference in the world. Logan School Age Center (SAC) and the Humane Society of El Paso (HSEP) are working together to bring

page 44

reading and mental activity to shelter dogs. It all started with volunteering. Suzanne Orjada, assistant director of Logan SAC, and her daughter, Shelby (15), started a project amongst themselves. Shelby’s avid interest in animals inspired them to begin volunteering their time with the Humane Society as a way for her to see professions that work with animals. They went through

various stages of volunteering and during that process Orjada became an adoption counselor. She heard that Ryan Coulehan, HSEP volunteer coordinator, was looking into a reading program for the shelter dogs. Orjada jumped on the idea and asked if she could bring her children from Logan SAC to participate. Since March of 2016, children from Logan SAC have been participating in the “Reading to Dogs” program. “Admittedly I was a little bit hesitant, because I didn’t initially see the benefit of it, but thought it was worth a shot,” said Coulehan. “Almost immediately, I was proven very wrong, the dogs responded tremendously. It was really great to see the confidence in both the dogs and the kiddos come out. The dogs would come up and were intrigued by it, they maintained eye contact and the kiddos got a lot more secure in themselves as they progressed.” On average about 20 children in the fourth and fifth grade, sometimes third grade, have volunteered their time to read and communicate with the dogs. “Usually our fourth and fifth graders are selected for this reading project,” said Orjada. “They are better able to understand the safety rules we teach to them to help keep them and the dogs safe too. We’ve also included some responsible

third graders in this project.” The children learn the dogs’ name, breed and about their conditions, if any. Then they have 15 minutes to read a story, usually a picture book for the dogs to see and if they’re done early, the children talk to them about their day. After that they move on to the next dog. This program helps children practice their reading skills, but it also helps the dogs connect with people. “One of my favorite parts is – we do it in shifts, small dogs first, then medium and then large dogs – the kids read at different paces, so the ones who finish earlier are instructed to tell them about their day, where they’re from, tell them what they want to be when they grow up; and the dogs actually respond to that the best,” said Coulehan. “That’s what’s really cool, I’m sure the dogs can tell when something is being recited compared to when they’re being spoken to. That connection is … unparalleled.” This is the second year Logan SAC, and now Bliss SAC, have participated in the “Reading to Dogs” program. The Reading to Dogs Program is slowly growing on Fort Bliss, it is not age restricted for volunteering and it can go towards high school and college credit if interested. For more information, call Logan SAC at 915-569-5779 or HSEP at 915-532-6971. facebook.com/blissmwr

The Fort Bliss’ Resiliency through Art program is a new Army arts and crafts initiative to help the individuals of our military community cope with the struggles of daily life through artistic expression. By providing a natural and therapeutic outlet for people, the program allows for the expression of a multitude of emotions through many different forms of art. Art is a healthy way of expressing one’s inner most feelings. The Resiliency through Art Program is not a counseling or therapy service; however, it does help attendees with an amazing boost of selfconfidence, self-awareness, and self-

esteem as they work through their unique art project from concept to completion. Whether you are dealing with anger, sadness, anxiety, or the day-to-day stressors of military and civilian life, this program provides a multitude of coping methods and is an outlet free of judgement or criticism. It gives participants a chance to connect with others, as well as an opportunity for attendees to lose themselves in the artistic process.

The Resiliency through Art Program has expanded its art offerings through partnering with the El Paso Art Association (EPAA). Multiple artists, of all artistic genres, from the EPAA are helping our military community though their incredible Soldier Art Workshop initiative. Experience the culture Family and MWR ACS

The Army Community Service (ACS) – Relocation Assistance Program welcomes all Military Service Members and their Families arriving to our beautiful U.S./ Mexico border community of El Paso, Texas. The team at Relocation Assistance understands the struggles of relocating to a new installation. Arriving to a new location means learning and understanding the area’s local flavor and customs. We bridge the gap by illuminating our community’s cultural diversity through programs and activities to promote a smooth integration. Relocation Readiness offers a quarterly event entitled, “Fiesta and Friends” to gather the community in celebration of cultural

enlightenment. At this event, we host a Pot Luck style party highlighting the cuisines within each culture and we also invite community agencies to provide a mini-relocation fair. In addition, we also offer Spanish as a second language (SSL) and English as a second language (ESL) classes. We live in a unique city, enriched with a diverse population. The majority of residents speak both English and Spanish. El Paso has traditions and history shaped by a binational and tristate (Texas, New Mexico, and Chihuahua) culture within the U.S./Mexico border. Our border community represented by El Paso and the commuting border cities of Las Cruces and Ciudad Juárez creates an amalgam of regional influences enriching El Paso’s

artistic inclinations, culinary delights and overall culture. We encourage everyone to immerse themselves in the El Paso culture by taking either SSL or ESL classes. By learning a new language you gain knowledge of multicultural values, behaviors, attitudes, and practices within a community. Becoming “culturally competent” enables you to more effectively adapt and thrive within your new home of El Paso. Embrace this cultural diversity, expand your sphere of new friends and you will better appreciate these new surroundings. Your experience in El Paso will be enhanced and your perspective will be widened by exploring and learning as much as possible about this new southwestern community. SSL and ESL classes are offered three times throughout the year. Sessions begin in January, April, and September each year. SSL is held twice a week from 1:00 – 2:30pm and ESL once a week from 8:30am – 11:30am. For more information please contact our instructors at the Relocation Assistance Program, 915-5694ACS (4227) or visit our website at www. bliss.armymwr.com.

I was filled with hope for the opportunities to come. Leaving my last job to move to El Paso with my active-duty girlfriend, I struggled to find a decent job for about six months. In the meantime, I found opportunities to volunteer at the El Paso Humane Society. This ultimately led to adopting our lovely, mischievous dog, Beauty. I dove into a sea of social activities, including Ultimate Frisbee, hiking the mountains, public speaking groups, and book clubs. We struck oil and made friends with some big-hearted El Pasoans with whom we’ve had the pleasure of sharing a few precious holidays together.
